Abstract Objective Research on the link between inflammatory indicators and markers of bone metabolism is currently lacking, especially the interaction between Procollagen type 1 N-terminal propeptide (P1NP), the β-C-terminal telopeptide of type 1 collagen (β-CTX), and the fibrinogen-to-albumin ratio (FAR). This study intends to fill that knowledge gap by investigating the possible link between inflammatory indicators and bone metabolism. Methods This observational study included 718 individuals diagnosed with osteoporotic fractures from Kunshan Hospital Affiliated to Jiangsu University between January 2017 and July 2022. After accounting for several confounders, the independent connection between FAR levels and β-CTX and P1NP was investigated via Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE). On top of that, we used a generalized additive model (GAM) to find any non-linear correlations, and a two-piecewise linear regression model to find the threshold effects in the smoothing curves that came out of it. To ensure the aforementioned result was stable, a subgroup analysis was carried out. Results The results showed a positive linear correlation between FAR and β-CTX [β = 1.077, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.24 to 1.92, P = 0.012]. The study’s findings demonstrated that FAR and P1NP fit curves in an inverted U-shaped pattern, and an inflection point K = 0.0685 for FAR was detected. P1NP showed a positive correlation with FAR below the inflection point (β = 306.10, 95% CI: 47.37 to 564.83, P = 0.021), and a negative correlation with FAR beyond the inflection point (β = -117.57, 95% CI: -231.34 to -3.80, P = 0.043). The subgroup analysis revealed that women had a more significant association between FAR and β-CTX in women than in men. Conclusions The results provide useful insights into the potential association between FAR and markers of bone metabolism. The study may provide a novel clinical implication by introducing FAR as a potential reference indicator for assessing bone health, offering a cost-effective and conveniently obtainable biomarker to monitor inflammation to improve bone metabolism in the treatment of osteoporosis.

BackgroundThe relationship between diabetes mellitus (DM) and bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with osteoporotic fractures (OPFs) remains complex and heterogeneous, specifically between the genders. This study aimed to explore the association between diabetes status and trochanteric BMD in a cohort of patients with OPFs and elucidate the differences between male and female patients.MethodsThis retrospective analysis was performed on 710 admitted patients aged 50 years or older with OPFs. In this study, the exposure variable was diabetes status. Trochanteric BMD comprised the dependent variable. While controlling for covariance influences, generalized estimating equations (GEE) were applied to examine the independent link between diabetes status and trochanteric BMD in OPFs patients. Moreover, a subgroup analysis was also conducted to validate the result’s stability.ResultsA substantial positive association was noted between diabetes status and trochanteric BMD in diabetic patients, as determined by the fully adjusted model (β = 0.017, 95% CI 0.001 to 0.033, p = 0.035). Furthermore, the sex-specific analysis showed a significant positive relationship between diabetes status and trochanteric BMD in male patients (β = 0.040, 95% CI 0.006 to 0.075, p = 0.022), whereas no significant relationship was observed in female patients (β = 0.010, 95% CI −0.008 to 0.028, p = 0.256).ConclusionThis study highlighted the significant sex differences in the impact of diabetes on trochanteric BMD among patients with OPFs. The male diabetic patients had higher trochanteric BMD than their non-diabetic counterparts; however, this association was not evident in female patients. Further research is necessary to understand the underlying mechanisms that contribute to these sex-specific differences and to evaluate the clinical implications of managing fracture risk in diabetic patients.

ObjectiveTo evaluate the correlation between the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and bone turnover markers (BTMs) in osteoporotic fractures (OPFs) patients hospitalized for surgical intervention.MethodsA retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 3558 OPFs patients hospitalized for surgical intervention between January 2017 and July 2022. The study obtained baseline values for various biomarkers and covariates, including fasting blood glucose, β-C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (β-CTX), procollagen type 1 N-terminal propeptide (P1NP), triglycerides, age, sex, body mass index, smoking, drinking, low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein, aspartate aminotransferase, uric acid, the score of American society of anesthesiologists, homocysteine, parathyroid hormone, apolipoprotein B, apolipoprotein A, magnesium, phosphorus and calcium. Multiple linear regression, curve fitting, threshold effects, and subgroup analyses were also applied.ResultsAfter adjusting for covariates in the regression analysis, the results revealed a negative correlation between β-CTX and P1NP levels and the baseline TyG index. Specifically, a one-unit increase in the TyG index was associated with a reduction in β-CTX levels of -0.06 (95% CI: -0.10, -0.01; P-value = 0.012) and a reduction in P1NP levels of -4.70 (95% CI: -9.30, -0.09; P-value = 0.046). Additionally, the inflection points for the nonlinear correlation between the TyG index and β-CTX and P1NP were found to be K = 6.31 and K = 6.63, respectively.ConclusionThe study demonstrated a negative, non-linear relationship among the TyG index, β-CTX and P1NP in OPFs patients hospitalized for surgical intervention. These findings suggest that elevated TyG index levels may adversely affect bone turnover, potentially contributing to the progression of OP.

BackgroundThe systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI) is a novel composite biomarker of inflammation. However, there is limited information on its use in the context of osteoporotic fractures. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the association between baseline SIRI values and bone turnover markers (BTMs) in Chinese patients diagnosed with osteoporotic fractures (OPFs), to offer a more precise method for assessing bone health and inflammation in clinical settings.MethodsA retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 3,558 hospitalized patients with OPFs who required surgery or hospitalization at the First People’s Hospital of Kunshan City from January 2017 to July 2022. Baseline measurements of SIRI, β-CTX (beta-C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen), and P1NP (procollagen type I N-terminal propeptide) were obtained. The analyses were adjusted for variables, including age, sex, body mass index (BMI), and other initial laboratory and clinical findings. Furthermore, multivariable logistic regression, smooth curve fitting, and threshold analysis were also performed.ResultsThe results revealed a negative correlation between baseline SIRI values and both β-CTX and P1NP levels. BackgroundThe relationship between the levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and bone mineral density (BMD) is controversial. Furthermore, the specific role of apolipoprotein A1 (APOA1), a primary HDL component, in regulating BMD remains unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the correlation between APOA1 levels and lumbar BMD in patients with osteoporotic fracture (OPF) for novel insights into potential therapeutic strategies against osteoporosis.MethodsThis study included 587 OPF patients enrolled at the Kunshan Hospital, Affiliated with Jiangsu University between January 2017 and July 2022. The patient’s serum APOA1 levels were determined, followed by the assessment of lumbar BMD and C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (β-CTX) as outcome variables. The association of APOA1 levels with lumbar BMD and β-CTX was assessed via Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) and spline smoothing plot analyses. A generalized additive model (GAM) helped ascertain non-linear correlations. Moreover, a subgroup analysis was also conducted to validate the result’s stability.ResultsIt was observed that APOA1 levels were positively correlated with lumbar BMD (β = 0.07, 95% CI: 0.02 to 0.11, p = 0.0045), indicating that increased APOA1 levels were linked with enhanced lumbar BMD. Furthermore, APOA1 levels were negatively related to β-CTX (β = −0.19, 95% CI: −0.29 to −0.09, p = 0.0003), suggesting APOA1 might reduce osteolysis. In addition, these findings were robustly supported by subgroup and threshold effect analyses.ConclusionThis study indicated that increased APOA1 levels were correlated with enhanced lumbar BMD and decreased osteolysis in OPF patients. Therefore, APOA1 may inhibit osteoclast activity to prevent further deterioration in osteoporotic patients. However, further research I warranted to validate these conclusions and elucidate the underlying physiologies.

Obesity has become a global public health problem. In recent years, increasing epidemiological evidence suggests that maternal obesity during pregnancy may not only cause adverse pregnancy outcomes, damage her own health and the health of fetus, but also cause varying degrees of health damage to offspring and impose a significant disease burden on society. This paper reviews the progress of epidemiological studies on the effects of maternal obesity on long-term adverse health outcomes in offspring, in order to provide a basis for developing related prevention strategies.

Abstract Background Few studies have examined the relationship between perioperative blood transfusion (PBT) and length of hospital stay (LOS) in patients with osteoporotic fractures. This research aims to study the association between PBT and LOS. Methods This is a retrospective cross-sectional study from the Affiliated Kunshan Hospital of Jiangsu University, Suzhou, China, involving 2357 osteoporotic fractures (OPF) patients who received surgical treatment during hospitalization from January 2017 and March 2022. Multiple linear regression was used to analyze the relationship between PBT and LOS. In the analysis, PBT volume was the dependent variable, whereas LOS was the independent variable. Simultaneously, age, gender, body mass index, hemoglobin, primary diagnosis, American Society of Anesthesiologists, creatinine (Cr), anesthesia, surgical method, and Charlson comorbidity index were included as covariates. The generalized additive model was then used to study nonlinear associations. Two piecewise linear regression exemplary evaluated the inception results for smoothing the curve. Abstract Osteoporosis (OP) is often associated with other complications, such as impaired glucose homeostasis. Vitamin D deficiency is common and has been linked to bone metabolism and the regulation of blood sugar levels. The aim of this study was to evaluate the independent relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) and fasting blood glucose levels (FBG) in a group of patients diagnosed with OP. This is a retrospective cross-sectional study from a prospectively collected database at our tertiary referral center. Consecutive 2084 OP patients who were hospitalization were finally analyzed in this study. FBG is the dependent variable, serum 25(OH)D level of OP patients is exposure variable of this study. There was a linear significantly negative association between serum 25(OH)D and FBG (β, − 0.02; 95% CI − 0.03 to − 0.01; P = 0.0011) in the fully adjusted models. Specifically, when serum 25(OH)D level was less than 23.39 ng/mL, FBG decreased by 0.04 mmol/L for every 1 ng/mL increase of serum 25(OH)D level. When serum 25(OH)D was greater than 23.39 ng/ mL, the negative association was insignificant (P = 0.9616). If the association is confirmed, the clinical management of blood glucose in OP patients with serum 25(OH)D deficiency has instructive implications.

Abstract Background In the literature, scarce data investigate the link between 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) and blood lipids in the osteoporosis (OP) population. 25(OH)D, as a calcium-regulating hormone, can inhibit the rise of parathyroid hormone, increase bone mineralization to prevent bone loss, enhance muscle strength, improve balance, and prevent falls in the elderly. This retrospective cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the association between serum 25(OH)D levels and lipid profiles in patients with osteoporosis, with the objective of providing insight for appropriate vitamin D supplementation in clinical settings to potentially reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease, which is known to be a major health concern for individuals with osteoporosis. Methods This is a retrospective cross-sectional study from the Affiliated Kunshan Hospital of Jiangsu University, including 2063 OP patients who received biochemical blood analysis of lipids during hospitalization from January 2015 to March 2022. The associations between serum lipids and 25(OH)D levels were examined by multiple linear regression. The dependent variables in the analysis were the concentrations of serum lipoprotein, total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TGs), apolipoprotein-A, lipoprotein A, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). The independent variable was the concentration of blood serum 25(OH)D. At the same time, age, body mass index, sex, time and year of serum analysis, primary diagnosis, hypertension, diabetes, statins usage, beta-C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen, procollagen type I N-terminal propeptide were covariates. Blood samples were collected in the early morning after the overnight fasting and were analyzed using an automated electrochemiluminescence immunoassay on the LABOSPECT 008AS platform (Hitachi Hi-Tech Co., Ltd., Tokyo, Japan). The generalized additive model was further applied for nonlinear associations. The inception result for smoothing the curve was evaluated by two-piecewise linear regression exemplary. Results Our results proved that in the OP patients, the serum 25(OH)D levels were inversely connected with blood TGs concentration, whereas they were positively associated with the HDL, apolipoprotein-A, and lipoprotein A levels. In the meantime, this research also found a nonlinear relationship and threshold effect between serum 25(OH)D and TC, LDL-C. Furthermore, there were positive correlations between the blood serum 25(OH)D levels and the levels of TC and LDL-C when 25(OH)D concentrations ranged from 0 to 10.04 ng/mL. However, this relationship was not present when 25(OH)D levels were higher than 10.04 ng/mL. Conclusions Our results demonstrated an independent relationship between blood lipids and vitamin D levels in osteoporosis patients. While we cannot establish a causal relationship between the two, our findings suggest that vitamin D may have beneficial effects on both bone health and blood lipid levels, providing a reference for improved protection against cardiovascular disease in this population. Further research, particularly interventional studies, is needed to confirm these associations and investigate their underlying mechanisms.

Conductive fibers are an important part of wearable electronic devices or smart textiles while several grand challenges have to be still overcome. In this study, we describe a simple and efficient method to prepare a copper layer on nylon 6 fabrics by using a pH-responsive styrene (St)-co-N, N-dimethyl-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA)/Pd nanocomposite. The St-co-DMAEMA/Pd can effectively enhance the adhesion between the copper layer and the substrate. Nylon 6 fabric is treated with an optimal acid concentration of 2.0 M before electroless deposition. The pretreatment will promote the affinity between the nanocomposite catalyst and the modified nylon 6 fabric and form a more favorable environment for copper deposition. Furthermore, the process yields excellent copper deposition (1.59 μm) onto nylon 6 fabric after electroless plating for 20 min. The copper layer formed by the method has a low resistance of about 2.51 Ω and the variation of resistance before and after bending test is small. In addition, the characteristic of pH responsive copolymers (St-co-DMAEMA) that displays high hydrophilicity at low pH values and high hydrophobicity at high pH values is crucial for electroless copper plating. This facile method is successfully applied in the metallization of nylon 6 fabric.

ABSTRACT Purpose: To investigate the effects of Periplaneta americana L. on ulcerative colitis (UC) induced by a combination of chronic stress (CS) and 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid enema (TNBS) in rats. Methods: The experiment UC model with CS was established in rats by a combination of chronic restraint stress, excess failure, improper, and TNBS. The body weight, disease activity index (DAI), colonic mucosal injury index (CMDI), histopathological score (HS) and pro-inflammatory mediators were measured. The content of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) in hypothalamus or adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and corticosteroids (CORT) in plasma were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The proportion of T lymphocyte subsets was detected by flow cytometry, and gut microbiota was detected by 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing. Results: Weight loss, DAI, CMDI, HS and proinflammatory mediators were reversed in rats by P. americana L. treatment after UC with CS. Increased epidermal growth factor (EGF) was observed in P. americana L. groups. In addition, P. americana L. could reduce the content of CRH and ACTH and regulate the ratio of CD3+, CD3+CD8+ and CD3+CD4+CD25+/CD4+ in spleen. Comparably, P. americana L. changes composition of gut microbiota. Conclusions: The ethanol extract of Periplaneta Americana L. improves UC induced by a combination of CS and TNBS in rats.

Accurate 2D/3D rigid registration between X-ray and CT images is crucial for orthopedic surgical navigation. However, existing learning-based methods often result in suboptimal registration performance due to local optima. Considering the limitations of single-view approaches, particularly the limited field of view that can omit critical information, we propose a dual-view learning-based pose regression registration framework. Our method leverages preoperative CT scans of the patient to generate multiple pairs of dual-view digitally reconstructed radiographs (DRRs). By integrating pose and pixel information from dual views during training, and utilizing dual-image information fusion for six-degree-of-freedom pose gradient optimization intraoperatively, we achieve both coarse and fine registration. The DifDRR and PoseNet methods yield average projection distance registration errors on X-rays of 25.94 ± 23.94 mm and 7.30 ± 3.53 mm, respectively, with GFRs of 67% and 18%. In contrast, our method achieved an average registration error of 0.76 ± 1.91 mm and a GFR of 0% on the same datasets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Non-rigid point set registration is essential for surgical navigation systems, for example in image-guided liver surgery, where accurate alignment of preoperative liver point set with intraoperative liver point set is crucial. However, accurate registration faces several challenges such as intraoperative data noise and the limited overlap between preoperative model and intraoperative data. In order to find non-rigid registration methods that are better able to cope with these challenges, we have conducted a comparative analysis of several open-sourced non-rigid registration methods, evaluating their robustness and accuracy under varying noise levels and overlapping ratios. The root-mean-square error (RMSE) is utilized to measure the accuracy of registration between the warped preoperative and intraoperative liver point sets, comparing one optimization-based and four data-driven registration approaches. Experiments mimicked clinical scenarios with controlled noise magnitudes and overlap ratios. The correspondences-based method Scoop outperforms other methods under conditions with low overlap ratio being 50% and 25%, as well as all noise magnitudes, consistently demonstrating lower registration errors than other methods(p < 0.001). The superior performance of Scoop indicates its potential as a reliable solution for accurate image-to-patient liver registration in surgical navigation. In addition, we find that the correspondences-based method performs better than the correspondences-free method. We believe this study provides valuable comparative results and insight, which will help researchers and clinicians in selecting optimal registration methods for liver surgery. BackgroundsSleep disorders are the most common and disabling symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Understanding the associations between sleep characteristics and motor and non-motor symptoms (NMSs) in PD can provide evidence to guide therapeutic interventions and nursing strategies. We aimed to investigate the association between sleep characteristics and motor function and NMSs in PD using multiple approaches.MethodsA total of 328 participants were included, and all participants underwent Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) evaluation and clinical assessments of PD symptoms. We conducted Spearman's correlation to evaluate the associations between sleep and PD symptoms, nonlinear regression to assess the relationships between sleep habits and PD, and mediated analyses to test the effects of NMSs on global PSQI and PD severity, quality of life, and motor symptoms.ResultsPoor sleep was associated with more severe PD symptoms. In addition, the reflection point for bedtime was around 21:52, associated with motor symptoms, and insufficient and excessive total time spent in bed and nocturnal sleep duration were correlated with higher NMS burdens. The optimal points were 8–9.2 and 6.2–6.9 h, respectively. It was also discovered that NMSs played the mediating roles in global sleep with the quality of life, PD stages, and motor symptoms to a varying range of 6.8–95.4%.ConclusionsSleep disorders have a significant effect on the burden of PD symptoms. The current findings provide new insights into the monitoring and management of sleep and PD and need to be further explored in the future studies.

Introduction: Body weight perception (BWP) directly determines weight management behaviors. Although child neglect is a well-established risk factor for managing body weight, little is known about its association with the accuracy of BWP. This study aimed to assess the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between child neglect and BWP accuracy in primary schoolchildren, and explore how these differ based on the sex of the child.Methods: The sample included 1,063 primary schoolchildren (557 boys and 506 girls, aged 8–10 years) from a two-wave observational study between 2018 and 2019 in Wuhan, China. Child neglect and BWP were investigated using self-administered questionnaires. The accuracy of BWP was defined by comparing the BWP and actual body weight, and it was categorized into three groups—consistent, underestimated, and overestimated. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was conducted with fitting child neglect as the independent variable and the accuracy of BWP as the dependent variable.Results: The prevalence of weight misperception was ~44% at baseline (underestimation 40%; overestimation 4%) in Chinese primary schoolchildren. In the cross-sectional analysis, children with a higher level of neglect were more likely to misperceive their body weight. Moreover, there was an apparent sex-related difference that boys who experienced a higher level of neglect significantly reported more underestimation, while girls reported more overestimation. There was no significant longitudinal association between child neglect and the change in BWP accuracy.Conclusions: This study revealed that a higher level of neglect was significantly associated with underestimated BWP in boys and overestimated BWP in girls. The mechanisms of sex-related difference and whether child neglect is involved in the change in BWP, merit further investigations.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory disease of intestinal tract, and Periplaneta americana has been found to be effective in the treatment for UC. The purpose of the study was to investigate the therapeutic effect of Periplaneta americana extract Ento-A on UC in rats induced by 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) and to explore its mechanism. The Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into normal control group; TNBS-treated group; sulfasalazine (SASP) treated group; Ento-A low- (50 mg/kg), medium- (100 mg/kg), and high-dose (200 mg/kg) groups, respectively. The UC model of rats was induced via TNBS. Disease activity index (DAI) was used to evaluate the severity of UC in rats. The macroscopic and microscopic damages of colon were accessed by colon mucosa damage index (CMDI) and histopathological score (HS), respectively. The levels of interleukin-4 (IL-4), interleukin-17 (IL-17), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) in serum and the contents of myeloperoxidase (MPO), transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), and epidermal growth factor (EGF) in colonic mucosa were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Compared with the normal control group, the TNBS-treated group showed increase in DAI, CMDI, HS, IL-17, TNF-α, IFN-γ as well as MPO and decrease in the levels of IL-4, EGF, and TGF-β1. However, Ento-A-administrated groups reversed the changes in the DAI, CMDI, HS, and the cytokines caused by TNBS. The study indicates that Periplaneta americana extract Ento-A can effectively alleviate the inflammation in TNBS-induced UC of rats, and the mechanism of that may be related to restoring the balance of T helper 1 (Th1)/Th2/Th17/T regulatory (Treg) cytokines.
