Alternative mating strategies, involving mating outside a social pair bond, have been studied intensively during the last few decades. However, we are still far from understanding what factors affect their frequencies in wild bird populations. In 2006–2011 we studied Eurasian Reed Warblers breeding in the nature reserve "Stawy Milickie" in SW Poland, and analysed the frequency of extra-pair paternity (EPP) and intra-specific brood parasitism (IBP). We genotyped a total of 786 nestlings from 259 nests. EPP offspring constituted 13.40% of all young (from 7.63% to 22.82% in different study years), and they were found in 21.62% of the broods (from 14.6% to 32.7% annually). The mean proportion of females with EPP young was 24.2% (from 16.2 to 41.7% annually). The proportion of EPP young in nests containing any EPP offspring ranged from 25% to 100% (on average 60%) and was not related to brood size. EPP young in one nest were sired usually by one or two males (92% of all cases), but we recorded one brood with three EPP fathers and one brood of four, where each young was sired by a different EPP male, and none by a social male. We found only one case of intra-specific brood parasitism (IBP). The brood with IBP constituted 0.39% of all examined broods, while the nestling that hatched from the dumped egg constituted 0.13% of all young whose parents were genotyped. We conclude that extra-pair paternity is a relatively common and regularly occurring alternative mating strategy in our study population of Reed Warblers, while intra-specific brood parasitism is extremely rare. Sexual conflict has long been perceived as a solid background for the evolution of parental care. Recent studies, however, highlight the importance of cooperation between the parents, especially in socially monogamous systems. Here, we examined parental performance of a small monogamous passerine with bi-parental care, the Eurasian Reed Warbler (Acrocephalus scirpaceus, RW), looking at the issue from the perspective of parents' cooperation. Using accurate and non-invasive video data on parent chick provisioning from 78 nests varying in brood size, we found some evidence of parents cooperation: both parents similarly adjusted their feeding rate to brood size, and the higher was their both contribution, the better was chicks condition (expressed by defecation rate). However, contrary to our expectations (based on premises from similar studies on other bird species) we did not find evidence for frequent and active synchronisation of nest visits. Importantly, we found a negative relationship between synchronisation level and chick body condition, suggesting that synchronisation may actually not be that beneficial in the study system. The results are surprising and highlight the importance of studying various species to understand mechanisms behind cooperation of partners in the bi-parental care system. Significance statement: Biparental care has long been viewed in the context of conflict between the breeding partners, and only recently they are considered cooperating agents caring together for the common offspring. Nevertheless, studies applying such a perspective are still scarce and there is a pressing need to test different species. Using video data on chick provisioning by Reed Warbler parents, we found evidence of partner cooperation: both parents adjusted their feeding rate to the number of nestlings, and the higher was their joint contribution, the better was offspring condition. Parents did not synchronise their nest visits more compared to randomly generated visits, but we found that synchronisation level negatively affected chick condition. Bird nests can provide habitats for various invertebrates, including ectoparasites, scavengers, and predators. Records of ants associating with active bird nests mostly involve the insects searching for food, with some exceptional records of ants raising their broods (eggs, larvae or pupae) within songbird nests in nest-boxes or tree cavities. We present data for a previously undocumented, but apparently regular, occurrence of ants and their broods within the active nests of a songbird, the wood warbler Phylloscopus sibilatrix (Bechstein, 1793), which builds domed nests on the ground in European forests. Systematic recording found ants, mostly Myrmica ruginodis Nylander, 1846, in 43% of 80 wood warbler nests in the primary forest of Białowieża National Park (Poland) during the springs of 2016-2017, including ant broods in 30%. Ad hoc records from this site in 2004-2015 found ants in a further 29% of 163 nests, including broods in 20%, indicating a regular association. However, examination of 37 nests from secondary forest in Switzerland and Great Britain founds ants in only 14%, and broods in just 5%. We discuss the potential drivers and mechanisms of the observed association between breeding wood warblers and ants, including the apparent difference in frequency between the primary and secondary forests. Many bird species are advancing the timing of their egg-laying in response to a warming climate. Little is known, however, of whether this advancement affects the respective length of the breeding seasons. A meta-analysis of 65 long-term studies of 54 species from the Northern Hemisphere has revealed that within the last 45 years an average population has lengthened the season by 1.4 days per decade, which was independent from changes in mean laying dates. Multi-brooded birds have prolonged their seasons by 4 days per decade, while single-brooded have shortened by 2 days. Changes in season lengths covaried with local climate changes:warmingwas correlated with prolonged seasons in multi-brooded species, but not in single-brooders. This might be a result of higher ecological flexibility of multi-brooded birds, whereas single brooders may have problems with synchronizing their reproduction with the peak of food resources. Sedentary species and shortdistance migrants prolonged their breeding seasons more than long-distance migrants, which probably cannot track conditions at their breeding grounds. We conclude that as long as climatewarming continues without major changes in ecological conditions, multi-brooded or sedentary species will probably increase their reproductive output, while the opposite effect may occur in single-brooded or migratory birds. Published information relating to changes in the chemical element content of avian eggs caused by embryonic development is extremely scarce, although it may be crucial for understanding both the presence of anthropogenic pollutants as well as physiological levels of micronutrients. We assessed the variation in concentrations of calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) and nine trace elements: seven essential (chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co) and zinc (Zn)) and two non-essential (lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd)) in shells and contents (both egg yolk and egg white) of embryonated and non-embryonated eggs. We investigated the eggs of the Eurasian Reed Warbler Acrocephalus scirpaceus, a large proportion of whose eggs are infertile in our study population (almost 43% of clutches contain unhatched eggs) as well as significant embryo-induced eggshell thinning at the equator of embryonated eggs. We found significantly higher concentrations (ὅ 22.7%) of all the focal elements in the contents of embryonated eggs in comparison with non-embryonated eggs, and a very pronounced one for Ca (nearly twice as high). The shells of embryonated eggs contained significantly higher concentrations of Zn (104.1%), Fe (56.5%), Pb (32.8%) and Cu (28.0%) but significantly lower ones of Co (8.9%) and Ca (9.3%) than the shells of non-embryonated eggs. The simultaneous higher concentrations of all elements in the content of thinnershelled embryonated eggs suggest the parallel transfer of these elements along with Ca resorption from the shell into the egg interior during embryo formation. The higher concentration of most elements in the thinner shells of embryonated eggs may be indicative of the maternal deposition of some of these elements in a shell layer not subject to embryonic depletion, or in the eggshell membrane. Our results highlight the need for the careful selection of egg samples, which should differentiate between embryonated and non-embryonated eggs in the analytical treatment of eggs and eggshells. Dispersed individuals can coordinate the onset of life history events, like reproduction or migration, on a large (population) spatial scale. However, the mechanism of this synchronisation has not yet been identified. In many species signals produced by one individual stimulate signalling activity of immediate neighbours. I propose that such local focuses of signalling could transform into waves propagating in space. This hypothesis predicts that signalling self-organizes into bursts, because neighbours tend to enter activity and refractory periods together. Temporal characteristics of such pulses should be more similar in locations proximate to one another than in distant ones. Finally, denser populations should produce relatively more complex wave patterns, since the number of propagating waves is proportional to the number of individuals. These predictions were tested in an analysis of time series of numbers of territorial songs in chaffinches, Fringilla coelebs, and the results supported the hypothesis. Time series of singing activity had memory of their past states: they were autoregressive processes with spectra in which low frequency oscillations predominated. The degree of similarity in two synchronously sampled time series, measured as a Euclidean distance between their spectra, decreased with the increasing physical distance of sampling spots and the number of signalling males. It is concluded that networks of interacting neighbours may integrate populations synchronising life cycles of dispersed individuals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
