This issue of Mobile Communications and Networks presents six articles covering various important and interesting aspects in wireless communications, including network capacity analysis in the presence of public safety related operations, shared fronthaul handling focusing on compression control, exploration of future-looking multi-tenanted radio communication systems, an overview of Wi-Fi 8 evolutions addressing new applications, investigation of power consumption for 5G base stations using an artificial neural network (ANN) architecture, and study of off-net-work communications in railway communications. The race toward defining 6G is on, and we have already started seeing a significant volume of article submissions targeting what is probably the major milestone of the mobile communications and networking community in the years to come. Through a meticulous review process, we have selected high-quality articles that we believe present promising ideas to the community: positioning in 5G networks, distributed intelligence in 6G networks, low-frequency massive multiple-input multiple-out-put (MIMO), and terahertz wireless communications. In particular, we see an increasing interest in the integration of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems in future networks, as evidenced by the two articles on that topic that are included in this issue. We hope that readers will find the articles informative, interesting, and helpful for their research or development purposes, or simply for having an idea about where our community is headed. With the evolution of mobile communications, we are seeing expanding scopes and an increasing number of topics within the mobile technology area. It is important to address different topics, so that the technology remains relevant and continues meeting the advancing needs in a consistent manner. This issue of the Mobile Communications and Networks Series explores such an expansion, with a few topics complementing each other. On one hand, it discusses new techniques of spectrum management to address the continued issue of spectrum scarcity. On the other hand, it also discusses the use cases and applications in the industry, in terms of industrial mid-end applications. One networking and a couple of radio topics also came under focus in the issue in terms of federated machine learning at the network edge, challenges of beam management in millimeter Wave, and predictor antennae for connecting multiple devices in a high-speed vehicle. There is a demand for using messaging systems to transport data between wireless applications in mobile communications. As multimedia messaging service (MMS) is a promising messaging system to meet the demand, it is under enhancement in related standardization bodies to make it effective in transporting application data. The enhancement should be compatible with the existing MMS services for its smooth and safe deployment. This paper proposes a solution to make the enhancement backward compatible, so that a new MMS service of transporting application data has no impact on the existing MMS services. The solution also provides forward compatibility, so that an MMS service of transporting application data does not hinder the introduction of any application in the future, allowing instantaneous deployment of a wireless application. The standardization bodies did not define any format for data communication between a wireless application and MMS in a terminal. A common format in this regard would help mass availability of wireless applications for different purposes independent of manufacturing a mobile terminal. Based on an analysis described in this paper, eXtensible Markup Language (XML) is the suitable format for the purpose.
