Abstract

To obtain high-performance THz-wave-emitting devices made of single crystals of Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 + δ (Bi2212), a high-temperature superconductor, an understanding of the device characteristics based on crystal characteristics can be a key issue because, in principle, the electrical properties of the intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) constructed in Bi2212 crystals highly depend on crystal conditions, such as carrier concentration, crystal homogeneities, and crystal defects. To evaluate the tendencies of the device characteristics associated with crystal characteristics, we prepared Bi2212 crystals with different Bi/Sr ratios (x = 0.05 , 0.15, and 0.25) and δ values (annealed under N 2 or O 2 gas flow conditions). The unit cell parameter c decreased as the Bi/Sr ratio or δ increased. For the same annealing conditions under N 2 gas flow, the superconducting transition temperature as well as the size of the hysteresis loop of the current–voltage characteristics and emission characteristics were significantly suppressed for the sample with x = 0.25 compared with the corresponding values for the samples with x = 0.05 and 0.15. The experimental results clearly indicate that parameters, such as the Bi/Sr ratio and annealing conditions, are crucial factors in determining the electrical characteristics of a device. This information can be a useful guide for the preparation of crystals for IJJ THz-wave devices that can be fine-tuned according to the desired device characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We fabricated terahertz (THz) wave emitters from high-temperature superconductor Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 + δ (Bi2212) single crystals annealed under oxygen gas ( O 2) flow and nitrogen gas ( N 2) flow conditions. To better understand the annealing effects of the crystal for the device, we evaluated both device properties and a c -axis lattice constant using x-ray diffraction. Compared to the N 2 -annealed sample, the O 2 -annealed sample shows higher critical current in the current–voltage characteristics and no clear emission. In addition, multiple hysteresis loops were observed above 75 K. Based on the x-ray diffraction measurements, it is suggested that the presence of multiple hysteresis loops observed in the I–V characteristics of the O 2 -annealed sample is caused by the existence of layers that have varying levels of oxygen content along the c -axis direction of the crystal. The formation of these layers is attributed to the deposition process of metallic thin films during the device fabrication procedure. This result indicates that the Bi2212 crystal surface of the O 2 -annealed sample is more sensitive than that of the N 2 -annealed one. In particular, the health economics of the “PD first” concept, which can be advantageous for clinical practice and healthcare systems, must be evaluated.Methods: This multicenter study investigated the cost-effectiveness of PD. The major effectiveness indicator was quality-adjusted life year (QALY), with a preference-based utility value based on renal function, and the cost indicator was the amount billed for a medical service at each medical institution for qualifying illnesses. In comparison with hemodialysis (HD), a baseline analysis of PD therapy was conducted using a cost-utility analysis (CUA). Continuous ambulatory PD (CAPD) and automated PD (APD) were compared based on the incremental cost-utility ratio (ICUR) and propensity score (PS) with a limited number of cases.Results: The mean duration since the start of PD was 35.0±14.4 months. Abstract

We investigated the electrical and optical properties of a highly mismatched AlInSb/GaAs photodiode sensor working in the mid-infrared range at room temperature. A substantial increase in the device performance was achieved by controlling the strain energy density in the dislocation filter layers and barrier layers to reduce the density of threading and interfacial dislocations, respectively. The resulting photodiode showed a high resistance-area product of 0.24 Ω cm2 and a peak detectivity of 2.2 × 109 cm Hz1/2 W–1 at 3.3 μm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: Petrous internal carotid artery aneurysms are very rare vascular lesions, which may present with otalgia and life-threatening massive otorrhoea. Case report: An 84-year-old woman presented at a local otolaryngology clinic with progressive otalgia due to an acute exacerbation of chronic otitis media. She was referred with left-sided massive otorrhoea following Eustachian tube catheterisation. She suffered another massive otorrhoea with epistaxis during left-sided ear cleaning at a clinic visit. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography and computed tomography angiography revealed a left-sided aneurysm and adjacent stenosis at the left internal carotid artery. Coil embolisation of the petrous internal carotid artery aneurysm was performed with percutaneous transluminal angioplasty followed by dilatation of the stenosis. Conclusion: Computed tomography angiography should be performed immediately when a patient reports massive otorrhoea. Endovascular occlusion is a treatment option as it avoids complications of open surgical ligation procedures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The characteristics of terahertz (THz) electromagnetic waves emitted from coherent GaAs-like longitudinal optical (LO) phonons in GaAs/AlAs multiple quantum wells were investigated. It was found that the amplitude of the THz wave from the coherent LO phonon is increased linearly with increasing number of periods of the quantum, well indicating that the THz wave originates from the superposition of the oscillatory polarization induced by the coherent GaAs-like LO phonon.

Abstract

The effects of surface modification on photoluminescence properties of CdS quantum dots (QDs) prepared by a reverse-micelle method are investigated. The modification of QD surface with a Cd(OH)2 layer leads to a strong enhancement of the band-edge photoluminescence intensity of CdS QDs in reverse micelles.
