BackgroundHuman Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) remains a significant public health concern worldwide. Women living with HIV/AIDS (WLHA) have the additional and unique need to seek sexual and reproductive health services. WLHA's maternal health journeys can be shaped by the cultural norms and resources that exist in their society. This study sought to understand if and how WLHA's family planning, pregnancy, and motherhood experiences could be influenced by the patriarchal culture, gender roles, and HIV stigma in Vietnam, specifically.MethodsBetween December 2021 and March 2022, 30 WLHA with diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and childbirth experiences were interviewed in Hanoi, Vietnam. These semi-structured interviews covered topics including HIV stigma, gender norms, pregnancy experiences, and child-rearing challenges. Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed, and analysed using ATLAS.ti.ResultsQualitative analyses of participant quotes revealed how limited information on one's health prospects and reproductive options posed a significant challenge to family planning. Societal and familial expectations as well as economic circumstances also influenced reproductive decision-making. WLHA often encountered substandard healthcare during pregnancy, labor, and delivery. Stigma and lack of provider attentiveness resulted in cases where women were denied pain relief and other medical services. Communication breakdowns resulted in failure to administer antiretroviral therapy for newborns. Motherhood for WLHA was shadowed by concerns for not only their own health, but also the wellbeing of their children, as HIV stigma affected their children at school and in society as well. Many WLHA highlighted the constructive or destructive role that family members could play in their childbirth decision-making and care-giving experiences.ConclusionsOverall, this study underscores the complex ways that cultural expectations, family support, and stigma in healthcare impact WLHA. Efforts to educate and engage families and healthcare providers are warranted to better understand and address the needs of WLHA, ultimately improving their reproductive and maternal health.

Community health workers (CHW) can play an active role in providing integrated HIV and harm reduction services. We used social media to create a virtual network among Vietnamese CHW. This paper reports CHW's social media engagement and the relationships with other work-related indicators. Sixty CHW participated in an intervention for integrated HIV/drug use service delivery. Following two in-person sessions, Facebook groups were established for CHW to share information, seek consultation, and refer patients. CHW's levels of online engagements were tracked for six months and linked to their service provision confidence, interaction with patients and other providers, and job satisfaction. The CHW made 181 posts, which received 557 comments and 1,607 reactions during the six months. Among the 60 CHW, 22 (36.6%) had three or more posts, 19 (31.7%) had one or two posts, and 19 (31.7%) had no post. Comparing the baseline and 6-month follow-up data, we observed that those who posted three or more times showed better service provision confidence (p = 0.0081), more interaction with providers in other settings (p = 0.0071), and higher job satisfaction (p = 0.0268). Our study suggests using social media to engage CHW in virtual communications to improve service provision in communities.

IntroductionDecentralising methadone maintenance treatment to primary care improves patients' access to care and their drug and HIV treatment outcomes. However, primary care providers (PCP), especially those working in limited-resource settings, are facing great challenges to provide quality methadone treatment. This study explores the challenges perceived by PCP providing methadone treatment at commune health centres in a mountainous region in Vietnam.MethodWe conducted in-depth interviews with 26 PCP who worked as program managers, physicians, counsellors, pharmacists and medication dispensing staff at the methadone programs of eight commune health centres in Dien Bien, Vietnam, in November and December 2019. We used the health-care system framework in developing the interview guides and in summarising data themes.ResultsParticipants identified major challenges in providing methadone treatment in commune health centres at the individual, clinic and environmental levels. Individual-level challenges included a lack of confidence and motivation in providing methadone treatment. Clinic-level factors included inadequate human resources, lack of institutional support, insufficient technical support, lack of referral resources and additional support for patients. Environment-level factors comprised a lack of reasonable policies on financial support for providers at commune health centres for providing methadone treatment, lack of regulations and mechanisms to ensure providers' safety in case of potential violence by patients and to share responsibility for overdose during treatment.Discussion and conclusionPCP in Vietnam faced multi-level challenges in providing quality methadone treatment. Supportive policies and additional resources are needed to ensure the effectiveness of the decentralisation program.

Geopolitics is shaping the international education landscape. International education has trationally been used as a tool to boost transnational cooperation, foster multilateral and global ties, and reduce tensions between nations. Such a role has been eroded and international education has been weaponised in the context of escalating political turbulences and disputes over the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, the relationship between Australia and China, with international student flows interrupted due to COVID-19, is overshadowed by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific region. Based on a qualitative study, this article examines stakeholders' views on the responses of the Australian international education sector and universities to emerging geopolitical tensions. The conjuncture of geopolitics, COVID-19 and Australia's former government responses magnified a sense of crisis for universities and the international education sector as it was at risk because of their financial reliance on international students. Based on the findings, recommendations are made for the framing of a reciprocal, coordinated, responsive and empathetic international education sector to mitigate geopolitical risks and ensure more sustainable and ethical development for the sector.

Academics are seen as primary agents in the enactment of higher education internationalisation. However, the achievements of internationalisation are claimed to be constrained by the lack of academics' involvement and expertise. This research, therefore, compares the policies and practices of capacity building for academics in internationalisation between Australian and Vietnamese universities. More specifically, this research seeks to unpack ideologies and understandings of internationalisation, institutional arrangements of capacity building for academics in internationalisation, and academics' individual agency in engaging and building their capacity for internationalisation. Using the Capability Approach as a theoretical framework (Sen, 1992, 1999), the research argues that academics' participation in internationalisation is determined by social and institutional conditions, combined with their individual aspirations and active roles in creating internationalisation and professional development opportunities. This suggests the significance of an enabling structure and active individual agency in expanding academics' capabilities for successful participation in internationalisation.

Scientific findings and policy guidelines recommend integrating HIV and drug addiction prevention and care into community-based settings. Systematic capacity-building efforts are warranted to provide technical support for community health workers and improve their confidence in the integrated service provision. An intervention trial was conducted between 2018 and 2019 with 120 community health workers (CHW) from 60 communes in Vietnam's four provinces. The 60 intervention CHW received in-person training to enhance their HIV/addiction-related service knowledge and skills. Online support groups were established between trained CHW and local HIV and addiction specialists. The intervention outcomes were assessed using mixed-effects regression models with the data collected at baseline and every 3 months for 1 year. Adjusted analyses showed that intervention CHW reported a significant increase in the interaction with other treatment providers than the control group at 6 months and remained at the 12-month follow-up. The difference in the improvement of confidence in HIV/addiction-related service delivery between the intervention and control groups was significant at 6-month but became insignificant at the 12-month. Male CHW were more confident in providing services than female CHW at baseline, and gender differences in the changing patterns were observed over time. This capacity-building intervention demonstrated promising outcomes on CHW inter-agency collaborations and confidence in service delivery. Gender divides in healthcare professionals should be attended to in future studies.

The article explores bilingual investments of dual-language immersion program alumni through an intersectional narrative analysis. Focusing on the experiences of bilingualism of six alumni, we investigate how they continue to be invested in bilingualism, the factors that shape their self-positionings as bilinguals, and the extent to which race is implicated in their experiences as bilingual speakers of Spanish and English. The analysis revealed that investment is not always agentive and is obligatory, and habitual -- less conscious linguistic behavior. While individual efforts sustain bilingual investment, biculturalism requires a collective practice. Bilingual experiences are racialized, and raciolinguistic ideologies at home school, and society at large shape alumni's bilingual investments. Across all findings, we discuss individual and collective similarities and differences among Hispanic/Latinx and White alumni. The article ends with implications for future research and practical recommendations for designing equitable bilingual programs.

A simulation study was conducted to examine the efficacy of nine frequently-used HOV tests, including Levene's tests with squared residuals and with absolute residuals, Brown and Forsythe (BF) test, Bootstrap BF test, O'Brien test, Z-variance test, Box-Scheffé (BS) test, Bartlett test, and Pseudo jackknife test under comprehensive simulation conditions. The results indicate that O'Brien, Levene's with squared deviations, BS, BF, and Bootstrap BF tests had adequate Type I error control, especially for O'Brien test and Levene's test with squared deviations. Under conditions of adequately controlling for Type I error, BF and Bootstrap BF tests had consistently higher power estimates across simulation conditions. Practical recommendations of guidelines for HOV test selection in factorial ANOVA designs are presented in the paper.

Stigma poses considerable challenges to the mental health of people living with HIV who use drugs (PLHWUD). In this study, we explored factors related to different types of stigma (perceived and internalized) attached to layered stigmatizing characters (HIV and drug use) and their mental health influences on PLHWUD. The study used baseline data of an ongoing randomized controlled trial among 241 PLHWUD recruited between March and December 2018 in Vietnam. A structural equation model was used to assess the relationships among different types and layers of stigma and mental health status. Both perceived and internalized drug-related stigma measures were significantly higher than their corresponding HIV-related stigma. HIV-related stigma was negatively associated with mental health status; however, we did not find a significant relationship between drug-related stigma and mental health. Tailored intervention strategies in consideration of types and layers of stigma are needed to address stigma-related challenges faced by PLHWUD.

Social media can potentially serve as a platform to coordinate medical care among fragmented health sectors. This paper describes procedures of using social media to enhance antiretroviral therapy (ART) and methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) providers' virtual network for integrated service for HIV-positive people who inject drugs (PWID) in Vietnam. A total of 88 ART and MMT treatment providers participated in person group sessions followed by online virtual support to improve service integration. In-person reunions were held to reinforce Facebook participation and network activities. Content analysis was used to identify keywords and topic categories of the online information exchange. Both MMT and ART providers were actively engaged in online communications. Referral and treatment adherence were the two most frequently discussed topic areas by both the MMT and ART providers. Frequent cross-agency connections were observed. Online provider networks and communities could be built and useful to support treatment providers to improve service integration.

Purpose: Internships are utilized globally to recruit graduate employees. However, there is a limited understanding of the process by which interns convert into regular employees, particularly in non-Western research contexts. Integrating attraction-selection-attrition (ASA) theory and proactive career behaviors, this study identifies the mechanisms influencing interns' intentions to convert into regular employment in host organizations in Vietnam. Design/methodology/approach: Time lagged, questionnaire data were collected from 669 final-year undergraduate business and economics students who participated in internship programs in a large metropolitan city in Vietnam. Findings: The results indicate that the interns who exhibit proactive career behaviors are more likely to foster high-quality reciprocal relationships with their supervisors and work colleagues during internships. These positive relations magnify interns' intentions to become regular employees via their perceived person-organization fit. Practical implications: This study has implications for higher education institutions and host organizations when designing internship programs to maximize employment outcomes via conversion of interns into regular employees. Originality/value: Previous studies have not tested the critical aspect of ASA theory regarding the personalities of the interns when building work-related relationships that result in the person-organization fit before accepting job offers from host organizations.

This study integrates social cognitive and cognitive dissonance theories to examine the influence of abusive supervision on public servants. By employing Hayes' Process macro and investigating a cohort of 468 US public servants, we found that abusive supervision is positively related to turnover intention via psychological distress. Notably, the adverse impact of abusive supervision is more pronounced among subordinates with a strong person-organization fit. Given the prevailing retention challenges in the public sector, our research offers novel insights into retaining well-matched personnel through the cultivation of positive workplace social connections. N‐Heterocyclic carbene (NHC)‐stabilized metal nanoparticles (NPs) have recently attracted considerable attention. While most efforts in the field have been devoted to the development of NHC‐tethered monometallic NPs and enhancing their stabilities under various conditions, their bimetallic counterparts are rare in the literature. Herein, we demonstrate that the covalent immobilization of Au and Ag atoms on polymerized NHCs is a powerful method to access bimetallic AuAg NPs. In addition, we show that while AuAg alloy NPs are often obtained via this method, the use of bimetallic polymeric substrates with lower Ag content, relative to Au, results in the formation of core–shell NPs with Au core and Ag shell. Application of these nanomaterials for oxygen reduction reaction is demonstrated with all materials exhibiting electrocatalytic activity. This work demonstrates for the first time that while bimetallic poly(NHC‐metal)s are viable substrates to access NHC‐stabilized bimetallic NPs, careful adjustment of metal content in the polymeric substrates can finetune the microstructure of the resulting NPs, i.e. alloy vs. core–shell. Women living with HIV often face intersecting challenges of stigma and gender inequality. In Vietnam, this issue is potentially exacerbated by the patriarchal culture. From December 2021 to March 2022, we conducted in-depth interviews with 30 women living with HIV in Hanoi to better understand their experiences and the coping mechanisms to navigate HIV stigma, cultural beliefs and gender norms. The interviews explored various topics including women's social and family roles in Vietnam, HIV-related beliefs, stigma and its impact on one's health and coping strategies. Participants reported stereotypes that assumed that women living with HIV had either engaged in sex work or behaved promiscuously. These stereotypes render them vulnerable to judgement and discrimination owing to widespread expectations of female virtue. As a result, women living with HIV often enacted non-disclosure and self-isolation to avoid stigma. This self-stigmatisation negatively impacted their healthcare-seeking, employment opportunities and ability to fulfil traditional family-caring roles. Conversely, many participants exhibited resilience with the support of family and peers. Overall, the complex interplay between gender, culture and HIV stigma underscores the importance of developing culturally appropriate, multifaceted approaches to engaging family and peers, modifying gender-based discriminatory social practices and enhancing women's self-efficacy and empowerment in Vietnam. Introduction: Specialists in poison information are responsible for following-up with exposure cases managed at healthcare facilities. However, the amount of time, call components, and barriers met when completing an initial healthcare facility follow-up call in which a large amount of data and clinical recommendations are shared is not well described. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted by randomizing healthcare facility initial follow-up calls from January to April 2022. One hundred and thirty calls that met the inclusion criteria were randomly selected. We recorded seven unique time intervals within each call. Day of the week, time of day, and variability amongst specialists in poison information were also assessed. Results: Initial follow-up calls took a median of 7.2 min. Most (67%) follow-up calls were directed to emergency departments. Barriers to completion of calls were most commonly due to the healthcare reporter being busy (37%) and specialists in poison information being placed on terminal hold (30%). There was variability between specialists in poison information in the time for healthcare reporter to share data (P < 0.0001), time for specialists in poison information recommendations (P = 0.0076), and total time (P = 0.0003). Discussion: Variability exists amongst specialists in poison information during periods of information exchange, particularly when the healthcare reporter is providing information and subsequently when the specialist in poison information is providing recommendations. Barriers to completing calls centered around healthcare reporter being busy or the specialist in poison information being placed on a terminal hold. There was no correlation with the time or day of the week. Conclusions: With notable variability in these calls during periods of intense communication of data and treatment recommendations, there are likely opportunities for specialists in poison information and poison center directors to work together to address variability and overcome barriers to completing initial hospital follow-up calls. Further studies to evaluate variability amongst specialists in poison information are the next steps in understanding this complex topic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
