Abstract A research protocol is a document that outlines the proposed research idea and is submitted to funding agencies, institutions, or journals for approval. Writing a research protocol represents a challenge, particularly for early-career researchers. In this guide, we aim to provide detailed guidance with the key components and offer practical tips for crafting a research protocol in line with the various study designs. Specifically, the structure of a research protocol should contain the following items: (1) a title that is specific, catchy, and impressive within the word limitation; (2) an abstract that briefs the critical points of the study; (3) an introduction highlighting the study context from broad to narrow and defining the knowledge gap; (4) a justification underlining the significance of the proposed study; (5) Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound (SMART) objective(s) and aim(s); (6) a methodology covering seven sub-items, including [i] study design and settings, [ii] study subjects, [iii] sample size calculation and sampling, [iv] participants recruitment and follow-up, [v] questionnaire development, [vi] potential variables and outcomes, and [vii] data analysis plan; (7) dissemination of the results; (8) ethics and conflict of interests; (9) budgets analysis/ funding disclosure; and (10) references. This guide will give an overview of these steps and provide clear and concise tips on how to successfully draft a scientific protocol. With careful planning and appropriate guidance, it is possible to develop a well-structured and compelling protocol to obtain approval for the conduction of the study or funding from agencies, institutions, or organizations.

Background: Green space has been linked with cardiovascular (CV) health. Nature access and quality may have significant impact on CV risk factors and health. Objectives: The authors aimed to investigate the relationship between NatureScore, a composite score for natural environment exposure and quality of green spaces, with CV risk factors and atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD). Methods: A cross-sectional study including one million adult patients from the Houston Methodist Learning Health System Outpatient Registry (2016-2022). NatureScore is a composite measure of natural environment exposure and quality (0-100) calculated for each patient based on residential address. NatureScores was divided into 4 categories: nature deficient/light (0-39), nature adequate (40-59), nature rich (60-79), and nature utopia (80-100). CV risk factors included hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and obesity. Results: Among 1.07 million included patients (mean age 52 years, female 59%, Hispanic 16%, Non-Hispanic Black 14%), median NatureScore was 69.4. After adjusting for neighborhood walkability, patients living in highest NatureScore neighborhoods had lower prevalence of CV risk factors (OR: 0.91, 95% CI: 0.90-0.93) and ASCVD (OR: 0.96, 95% CI: 0.93-0.98) than those in lowest NatureScore neighborhoods. Background Both cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are the leading causes of death worldwide. Although our previous study detected a relationship between CVD and cancer incidence, limited evidence is available regarding the relationship between CVD, cardiovascular risk factors, and cancer mortality. Methods and Results A prospective cohort study using data from the continuous NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1999–2016) merged with Medicare and National Death Index mortality data, through December 31, 2018. We included individuals with no history of cancer at baseline. The primary exposure was CVD at baseline. We also conducted a comprehensive risk factor analysis as secondary exposure. The main outcome was cancer mortality data collected from Medicare and National Death Index. We included 44 591 adult individuals representing 1 738 423 317 individuals (52% female, 67% non‐Hispanic White, and 9% Hispanic). Competing risk modeling showed a significantly higher risk of cancer mortality in individuals with CVD (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 1.37 [95% CI 1.07–1.76], P=0.01) after adjusting for age, sex, and race and ethnicity. Abstract Background COVID-19 has caused millions of deaths globally, with vulnerable populations such as people experiencing homelessness (PEH) at higher risk. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to identify the prevalence and key factors contributing to vaccine acceptance experienced by PEH. Methods The protocol of this study was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023391659). We included studies that reported relevant information about vaccine acceptance or vaccine hesitant/refusal among PEH. Eight databases were systematically searched in January 2023. Meta-analysis was conducted for the prevalence of vaccine acceptance, vaccine uptake, and factors associated with vaccine acceptance. Attitudes toward vaccines were combined into bar charts. Result A total of 29 papers were included in this systematic review and 19 papers were included for meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of COVID-19 vaccine acceptance among PEH was 66% (95%CI: 58%-73%). Our meta-regression showed vaccine acceptance was significantly increased over time. Moreover, subgroup meta-analysis showed that PEH were more likely to accept the COVID-19 vaccine after June 2021 (78%, 95%CI: 65%-86%) compared with earlier period (56%, 95%CI: 54%-59%). Subgroup meta-analysis also revealed that women and participants without underlying medical condition (chronic diseases) were significantly less likely to accept the COVID-19 vaccine, compared to men and those with medical conditions, respectively. Conclusion The study emphasizes the need for targeted public health interventions aimed at increasing vaccine acceptance among PEH, especially at the early stage of the pandemic, among females, those without underlying medical conditions, being Black (in Canada and the USA), and young people. These interventions should address the common concerns of vaccine safety, adverse effects, effectiveness, and distrust in health care systems. In addition to offering vaccinations in different areas convenient to them, education programs could be established to increase vaccine acceptance among PEH.

Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between risk factors of cancer among individuals with existing cardiovascular disease (CVD). Methods: The analysis included 438 and 2100 CVD patients aged 65+ from NHANES-III and Continuous datasets, respectively. Competing risk models with subdistribution hazards ratio (aHR) were used to identify risk factors. Results: Females in NHANES-III had lower cancer risk (aHR 0.39, P = 0.001) compared to males. Background: As a result of the high contagiousness and transmissibility of SARS-CoV-2, studying the location of the case clusters that will follow, will help understand the risk factors related to the disease transmission. In this study, we aim to identify the transmission cluster category and settings that can guide decision-makers which areas to be opened again. Methods: A thorough review of the literature and the media articles were performed. After data verification, we included cluster data from eight countries as of 16th May 2020. Clusters were further categorized into 10 categories and analysis was performed. The data was organized and presented in an easily accessible online sheet. Results: Among the eight included countries, we have found 3905 clusters and a total number of 1,907,944 patients. Indoor settings (mass accommodation and residential facilities) comprised the highest number of both number of clusters (3315/3905) and infected patients (1,837,019/1,907,944), while the outdoor ones comprised 590 clusters and 70,925 patients. Mass accommodation was associated with the highest number of cases in 5 of the 7 countries with data available. Social events and residential settings were responsible for the highest number of cases in the two remaining countries. In the USA, workplace facilities have reported 165 clusters of infection including 122 food production facilities. Conclusions: Lockdown could truly be a huge burden on a country’s economy. However, with the proper knowledge concerning the transmissibility and the behaviour of the disease, better decisions could be made to guide the appropriate removal of lockdown across the different fields and regions.
