Abstract There is an increasing interest in non-destructive and real-time high-resolution approaches for corrosion studies in metals. In this paper, we propose the dynamic speckle pattern method as a low-cost, easy-to-implement, and quasi in-situ optical technique for the quantitative evaluation of pitting corrosion. This type of corrosion occurs in a specific area of a metallic structure and causes holes formation leading to structural failure. A Custom 450 stainless steel sample, placed in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution and applied to a $$350 \,\hbox {mV}_{SCE}$$ 350 mV SCE potential to initiate the corrosion, is used as the sample. The speckle patterns formed by the scattering of a He-Ne laser light is changed over time due to any corrosion in the sample. The analysis of the time-integrate speckle pattern suggests that the growth rate of pitting decreases with time.

The integration of renewable energy and flexible energy sources in buildings brings numerous benefits. However, the integration of new technologies has increased the complexity and despite the progress of optimization algorithms and technologies, new research challenges emerge. With the increasing availability of data and advanced modeling tools, stakeholders in the building sector are actively seeking a more comprehensive understanding of the implementation and potential benefits of energy optimization and an extensive up-to-date survey of optimization in the context of buildings and communities is missing in the literature. This study comprehensively reviews over 180 relevant publications on the management and optimization of energy flexibility resources in buildings. The primary objective was to examine and analyze prior research, with emphasis on the used methods, objectives, and scope. The method of content analysis was used to ensure a thorough examination of the existing literature on the subject. It was concluded that multi-objective optimization is crucial to enhance the utilization of flexible resources within individual buildings and communities. Moreover, the study successfully pinpointed key challenges and opportunities for future research, such as the need for accurate data, the complexity of the optimization process, and the potential trade-offs between different objectives.

The CUSTOM 450 gas turbine compressor blades are corroded in chlorine environments. The initiation and growth of pits and cracks lead to failure. In this paper, prediction of the pitting corrosion behavior of the alloy is studied. In this regard, in the laboratory section, two-point bending specimen is first subjected to different potentials in a 3.5 wt.% sodium chloride solution to cause pitting corrosion and finally leads to failure at the maximum bending region. According to different potentiostatic tests, an equation is proposed to predict the pitting and life time of stressed sample at different potentials. In the numerical section, the strain in the grown pits is calculated by using digital image correlation method and also the COMSOL Multiphysics software. The location of the localized maximum strain obtained from these two methods is in good agreement with growth of the corrosion pits in the electrochemical experiments. Thus, without needs of experiments, the growth direction of the pit can be simulated.
