The utilization of self-healing polymers is a promising way of solving problems associated with the wear and tear of polymer products, such as those caused by mechanical stress or environmental factors. In this study, a series of novel self-healing, high-strength copolymers of acrylamide, acrylic acid, and novel acrylic complexes of 4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine [Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II)] was prepared. A systematic study of the composition and properties of the obtained polymers was carried out using a variety of physicochemical techniques (elemental analysis, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR/FT-IR), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and tensile testing). All metallopolymer samples exhibit autonomous intrinsic healing along with maintaining high tensile strength values (for some samples, the initial tensile strength exceeded 100 MPa). The best values of healing efficiency are possessed by metallopolymers with a nickel complex (up to 83%), which is most likely due to the highest lability of the metal-heteroatom coordination bonds. The example of this system shows the ability to re-heal with negligible deterioration of the mechanical properties. The possibility of tuning the mechanical properties of self-healing films through the use of different metal ions has been demonstrated.

The terpolymers of N-vinylpyrrolidone (VP) with acrylic acid and triethylene glycol methacrylate were synthesized with more than 90% yield by radical copolymerization in ethanol from monomeric mixtures of different molar composition (98:2:2, 95:5: 2 and 98:2:5) and their monomer composition, absolute molecular masses and hydrodynamic radii in aqueous media were determined. Using the MTT test, these terpolymers were established to be low toxic for non-tumor Vero cells and HeLa tumor cells. Polymer compositions of hydrophobic dye methyl pheophorbide a (MPP) based on studied terpolymers and linear polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were obtained and characterized in water solution. Quantum-chemical modeling of the MPP-copolymer structures was conducted, and the possibility of hydrogen bond formation between terpolymer units and the MPP molecule was shown. Using fluorescence microscopy, the accumulation and distribution of polymer particles in non-tumor (FetMSC) and tumor (HeLa) cells was studied, and an increase in the accumulation of MPP with both types of particles was found.

New amphiphilic VP-(di)methacrylate terpolymers of different monomer compositions and topologies have been synthesized by radical polymerization in toluene without any growth regulator of polymer chains. Their structures and properties in solid state and water solution were studied by double-detector size-exclusion chromatography; IR-, 1 H, and 13 C NMR-spectroscopy; DLS, TEM, TG, and DSC methods. The composition of the VP-AlkMA-TEGDM monomer mixture has been established to regulate the topology of the resulting macromolecules. The studied terpolymers presented on TEM images as individual low-contrast particles and their conglomerates of various sizes with highly ordered regions; in general, they are amorphous structures. None of the terpolymers demonstrated cytotoxic effects for noncancerous Vero and tumor HeLa cells. Hydrophobic D-α-tocopherol (TP) was encapsulated in terpolymer nanoparticles (NPs), and its antioxidant activity was evaluated by ABTS (radical monocation 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)) or DPPH (2,2'-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) methods. The reaction efficiency depends on the TP-NP type. The IC 50 values for the decolorization reaction of ABTS •+ and DPPH inhibition in the presence of initial and encapsulated TP were obtained.

Currently, the chemistry of self-healing polymers is aimed not only at obtaining materials with high self-healing efficiency, but also at improving their mechanical performance. This paper reports on a successful attempt to obtain self-healing copolymers films of acrylic acid, acrylamide and a new metal-containing complex of cobalt acrylate with a 4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine ligand. Samples of the formed copolymer films were characterized by ATR/FT-IR and UV-vis spectroscopy, elemental analysis, DSC and TGA, SAXS, WAXS and XRD studies. The incorporation of the metal-containing complex directly into the polymer chain results in an excellent tensile strength (122 MPa) and modulus of elasticity (4.3 GPa) of the obtained films. The resulting copolymers demonstrated self-healing properties both at acidic pH (assisted by HCl healing) with effective preservation of mechanical properties, and autonomously in a humid atmosphere at room temperature without the use of initiators. At the same time, with a decrease in the content of acrylamide, a decrease in the reducing properties was observed, possibly due to an insufficient amount of amide groups to form hydrogen bonds through the interface with terminal carboxyl groups, as well as a decrease in the stability of complexes in samples with a high content of acrylic acid.

Eco-friendly waterborne polyurethanes (WPU) find wide application in agriculture as pesticide carriers, which enhances their efficiency. To provide better control of the retention time and capacity of pesticides, WPU can be modified by cyclodextrin derivatives able to form supramolecular assemblies with bioactive substances. Synthesis of WPU containing up to 15 wt.% of covalently bound β-cyclodextrin partial nitrate (CDPN) is reported in this work. Covalent bonding of CDPN to a polyurethane matrix has been proved by IR spectroscopy and size exclusion chromatography. The particle size and viscosity of the WPU dispersion have been determined. The introduction of CDPN affects molecular weight and thermal properties of WPU films. The presence of CDPN in WPU is shown to provide higher average molecular weight, wider molecular weight distribution, and larger average size of dispersed particles, compared with WPU reference samples containing 1,4-butanediol. The analysis of the rheological behavior of the obtained WPU dispersions shows that they can be classified as pseudoplastic liquids. The analysis of the thermal parameters of WPU films indicates that the introduction of 15.0 wt.% CDPN shifts the value of the glass transition temperature from -63 °C to -48 °C compared with reference samples. We believe that the results of the present study are sufficiently encouraging in terms of using CDPN-modified eco-friendly WPU as potential systems for developing the delivering agents of bioactive compounds. The application of such systems will allow the long-term contact of pesticides with the plant surface and minimize the possibility of their release into the environment.

Donor-acceptor conjugated polymers are considered advanced semiconductor materials for the development of thin-film electronics. One of the most attractive families of polymeric semiconductors in terms of photovoltaic applications are benzodithiophene-based polymers owing to their highly tunable electronic and physicochemical properties, and readily scalable production. In this work, we report the synthesis of three novel push-pull benzodithiophene-based polymers with different side chains and their investigation as hole transport materials (HTM) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). It is shown that polymer P3 that contains triisopropylsilyl side groups exhibits better film-forming ability that, along with high hole mobilities, results in increased characteristics of PSCs. Encouraging a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.4% was achieved for P3 -based PSCs that outperformed the efficiency of devices based on P1 , P2 , and benchmark PTAA polymer. These findings feature the great potential of benzodithiophene-based conjugated polymers as dopant-free HTMs for the fabrication of efficient perovskite solar cells.

We report a simple and convenient approach to the one-pot synthesis of hyperbranched polyurethane-triazoles with desirable properties. This method is based on in situ generation of an AB 2 + A 2 + B 4 azide-acetylene monomer mixture of known composition, due to quantitative reactions of urethane formation between isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), 1,3-diazidopropanol-2 (DAPOL) (in the first stage) and propargyl alcohol (in the second stage). The obtained monomer mixture can be involved in step-growth polymerization by azide-alkyne cycloaddition without additional purification (in the third stage). The properties of the resulting polymers should depend on the composition of the monomer mixture. Therefore, first the model revealing the correlation between the monomer composition and the ratio and reactivity of the IPDI and DAPOL active groups is developed and proven. In addition, the newly developed structural kinetic model considering the substitution effect at polyaddition of the complex mixture of monomers allows the prediction of the degree of branching of the target polymer. Based on our calculations, the hyperbranched polyurethane-triazoles were synthesized under found conditions. All products were characterized by 1 H NMR, FTIR, SEC, DLS, DSC, TGA and viscometry methods. It was shown that the degree of branching, molecular weight, intrinsic viscosity, and hydrodynamic radius of the final hyperbranched polymers can be specified at the first stage of one-pot synthesis. The obtained hyperbranched polyurethane-triazoles showed a degree of branching from 0.21 to 0.44 (calculated DB-0.25 and 0.45, respectively).
