Daniel Goleman, best known for his worldwide bestseller “Emotional Intelligence,” is most recently co-author of “Altered Traits: Science Reveals How Meditation Changes Your Mind, Brain and Body.” A meditator since his college days, Goleman has spent two years in India, first as a Harvard Predoctoral Traveling Fellow and then again on a Post-Doctoral Fellowship. Dr. Goleman’s first book, “The Meditative Mind: The Varieties of Meditative Experience,” is written on the basis of that research, offering an overview of various meditation paths. Francesco Antinucci has been Research Director of the Cognitive Sciences and Technologies Institute of the Italian National Research Council (CNR). He has developed part of his researches in the United States, at the Department of Psychology of the University of California at Berkley, at the School of Information Studies of the same university, and at the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) by Xerox. He has worked with new technologies from their earliest stages, developing several multimedia and virtual reality applications.

Vittorio Gallese is professor of Psychobiology at the University of Parma, Italy, and was professor in Experimental Aesthetics at the University of London, UK (2016-2018). He is an expert in neurophysiology, cognitive neuroscience, social neuroscience, and philosophy of mind. Gallese is one of the discoverers of mirror neurons. Gallese has been doing research at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, at the Nihon University, Tokyo, Japan, at the University of California at Berkeley and at the Berlin School of Mind and Brain of the Humboldt University of Berlin. He has been George Miller visiting professor at the University of California at Berkeley. His research attempts to elucidate the functional organization of brain mechanisms underlying social cognition, including action understanding, empathy, language, mindreading and aesthetic experience.

Over the years, we have undertaken research projects in the field of cultural heritage perception, trying to analyze the response of the human cognitive system when immersed in Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality or other multimedia supports. Our goal has been to study how to improve design exhibition, utilizing these technologies in museums and cultural heritage sites and to study alternative ways to promote human development through deeper contact with art.

Approximately 10%-12% of patients in chronic-phase chronic myeloid leukemia (CP-CML) have additional chromosomal aberrations at diagnosis; moreover, CML occurs in up to 10% of pregnancy-associated leukemias, with an annual incidence of 1 per 100,000 pregnancies. In this report we describe the case of a 36-year-old female with CP-CML diagnosed in the 18th week of pregnancy and with a new complex variant translocation t(4;9;22;21)(q24;q34;q11;q22) and an additional chromosomal aberration t(1;20)(p36;p11). In consideration of her pregnancy, the patient strictly monitored her blood cell count without any specific treatment. At 32 weeks of pregnancy, the patient delivered via cesarean section a healthy baby girl. After 10 days from childbirth, dasatinib was started at a standard dosage of 100 mg/day and 3 months later complete cytogenetic response and major molecular response were obtained, with the achievement of an optimal response according to European Leukemia Net recommendations and showing efficacy of this tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) in the presence of a complex karyotype. A Virtual itinerary for a real experience is an idea based on the virtual reproduction of the fresco of the Procession of the Magi painted by Benozzo Gozzoli in Palazzo Medici in Florence, in its original dimensions and spatial configuration, which was presented at the Digital Heritage International Congress in Granada in 2015. The installation stems from an approach to Cultural Heritage communication, that sets the visitor at the centre of the design process, as both recipient and agent of cultural transmission. In this vision, cognitive science and the concept of affordance play a crucial role in defining a multimedia set that promotes a primary mechanism of cognition embedded in the human beings, the perceptive-motory method to help visitors approach and understand art through a natural form of integrated aesthetic experience. Four cases of hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) treated with the tyrosine-kinase inhibitor imatinibmesylate are reported. The drug was effective in three patients, but a prolonged clinical and hematological remission was obtained only in one patient, due to appearance of resistance or poor tolerability in the other cases. The dose of imatinib necessary to achieve a response ranged from 100 to 600 mg/d. One patient with evidence of a clonal T-cell population did not respond at all. We confirm the efficacy of imatinib in HES, but we also underline that type and duration of response may be variable. Normal promyelocytes express CD45RO, while acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) blasts express CD45RA, both isoforms of common leukocyte antigen with mutually exclusive expression. Here we report a patient with accumulation of promyelocytes in the bone marrow and the diagnostic strategy is described along with the ability to quickly discriminate between normal and abnormal cells using the flow cytometric detection of expression of RA/RO isoforms of CD45. Introduction: The classification and the clinical management of adult acute lymphoblastic leukemias (ALL) that co-express myeloid antigens (MyALL) remain controversial because of the confusion of terms and criteria to define these cases. Materials and methods: The characteristics of 112 adult ALL patients were reviewed. The scoring systems proposed by Catovsky and EGIL Group to classify MyALL were applied to qualify cases with score 0 (group I), 0.5-1.5 (group II) and 2 (group III). Results: Forty-seven (42%) cases co-expressed MyAgs (group II: 29; group III: 18). A greater percentage of MyALL cases belonged to the earlier B and T subclasses. Ph+ incidence, WBC count and expression of CD34, CD45RA and CD25 were higher in group III. All patients received intensive therapy: out of these, 93 (83%) achieved CR. Although the response did not correlate significantly with the co-expression of MyAgs, the patients with the highest score had the lowest CR rate: 72, 83 and 86% in groups III, II and I, respectively. Surprisingly, the DFS curve of group III proved to be the most favorable. However, the OS was not significantly di3erent, even if a worse curve was observed in group II. Multivariate analysis showed that only score 2 significantly a3ected DFS. Conclusion: The scoring system accurately defines diagnosis and ontogeny of MyALL which appear to be related to incidence of Ph chromosome, elevated WBC count and elderly age. Consequently, fewer CR rates were documented in MyALL with the highest score. However, it was in this group that the good responders showed a greater capacity to continue in first remission. Background and Objectives: Around 5% of chronic myeloid leukemias (CML) are characterized by complex variant Philadelphia (Ph) translocations involving one or more chromosomal regions in addition to 9 and 22. The BCR/ABL1 fusion gene is usually found on der(22). The additional gene(s) involved in complex variant Ph rearrangements have not been characterized., Design and Methods: We performed fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) in three complex variant Ph translocations involving the short arm of chromosome 6 in addition to 9 and 22. The BCR/ABL1 D-FISH probe was applied to localize the BCR/ABL1 fusion gene as well as the 5'ABL1 and the 3'BCR. Locus-specific probes were used to narrow the 6p breakpoint., Results: In all cases the BCR/ABL1 fusion gene was located on the Ph chromosome whereas the reciprocal ABL1/BCR gene was detected only in patient #2. On 6p, breakpoints were narrowed to three different regions: centromeric to the human major histocompatibility complex (MHC), between PAC 524E15 and PAC162J16, in the first patient, and telomeric to the MHC, between PAC 329A5 and PAC 145H9, and between PAC 136B1 and PAC 206F19, in the second and third patients, respectively. In patients #2 and 3 a chromosomal rearrangement different from a true complex variant was discovered. In both cases, a classical t(9;22) was associated with an additional translocation involving the der(9)t(9;22)., Interpretation and Conclusions: Rearrangements at 6p in complex Ph aberrations involve more than one gene/locus. Classical t(9;22), masked by additional chromosomal rearrangements, can resemble complex variant Ph translocations, and can be detected only using appropriate FISH probes.
