BackgroundElectronic paper (E-paper) screens use electrophoretic ink to provide paper-like low-power displays with advanced networking capabilities that may potentially serve as an alternative to traditional whiteboards and television display screens in hospital settings. E-paper may be leveraged in the emergency department (ED) to facilitate communication. Providing ED patient status updates on E-paper screens could improve patient satisfaction and overall experience and provide more equitable access to their health information. ObjectiveWe aimed to pilot a patient-facing digital whiteboard using E-paper to display relevant orienting and clinical information in real time to ED patients. We also sought to assess patients’ satisfaction after our intervention and understand our patients’ overall perception of the impact of the digital whiteboards on their stay. MethodsWe deployed a 41-inch E-paper digital whiteboard in 4 rooms in an urban, tertiary care, and academic ED and enrolled 110 patients to understand and evaluate their experience. Participants completed a modified Hospital Consumer Assessment of Health Care Provider and Systems satisfaction questionnaire about their ED stay. We compared responses to a matched control group of patients triaged to ED rooms without digital whiteboards. We designed the digital whiteboard based on iterative feedback from various departmental stakeholders. After establishing IT infrastructure to support the project, we enrolled patients on a convenience basis into a control and an intervention (digital whiteboard) group. Enrollees were given a baseline survey to evaluate their comfort with technology and an exit survey to evaluate their opinions of the digital whiteboard and overall ED satisfaction. Statistical analysis was performed to compare baseline characteristics as well as satisfaction. ResultsAfter the successful prototyping and implementation of 4 digital whiteboards, we screened 471 patients for inclusion. We enrolled 110 patients, and 50 patients in each group (control and intervention) completed the study protocol. Age, gender, and racial and ethnic composition were similar between groups. We saw significant increases in satisfaction on postvisit surveys when patients were asked about communication regarding delays (P=.03) and what to do after discharge (P=.02). We found that patients in the intervention group were more likely to recommend the facility to family and friends (P=.04). Additionally, 96% (48/50) stated that they preferred a room with a digital whiteboard, and 70% (35/50) found the intervention “quite a bit” or “extremely” helpful in understanding their ED stay. ConclusionsDigital whiteboards are a feasible and acceptable method of displaying patient-facing data in the ED. Our pilot suggested that E-paper screens coupled with relevant, real-time clinical data and packaged together as a digital whiteboard may positively impact patient satisfaction and the perception of the facility during ED visits. Electronic ink displays are paper-like displays that are not backlit and show content by aligning microencapsulated color beads in response to an applied electric current. Power is only required to generate content and not to retain it. These displays are very readable, with low eye strain; minimize the emission of blue light; require minimal power; and can be driven by several data sources, ranging from virtual servers to electronic health record systems. These attributes make adapting electronic ink displays to hospitals an ideal use case. ObjectiveIn this paper, we aimed to outline the use of signage and displays in hospitals with a focus on electronic ink displays. We aimed to assess the advantages and limitations of using these displays in hospitals and outline the various public-facing and patient-facing applications of electronic ink displays. Finally, we aimed to discuss the technological considerations and an implementation framework that must be followed when adopting and deploying electronic ink displays. MethodsThe public-facing applications of electronic ink displays include signage and way-finders, timetables for shared workspaces, and noticeboards and bulletin boards. The clinical display applications may be smaller form factors such as door signs or bedside cards. The larger, ≥40-inch form factors may be used within patient rooms or at clinical command centers as a digital whiteboard to display general information, patient and clinician information, and care plans. In all these applications, such displays could replace analog whiteboards, noticeboards, and even other digital screens. ResultsWe are conducting pilot research projects to delineate best use cases and practices in adopting electronic ink displays in clinical settings. This will entail liaising with key stakeholders, gathering objective logistical and feasibility data, and, ultimately, quantifying and describing the effect on clinical care and patient satisfaction. ConclusionsThere are several use cases in a clinical setting that may lend themselves perfectly to electronic ink display use. The main considerations to be studied in this adoption are network connectivity, content management, privacy and security robustness, and detailed comparison with existing modalities. ABSTRACT The emission of methane from wetlands is spatially heterogeneous, as concurrently measured surface fluxes can vary by orders of magnitude within the span of a few meters. Despite extensive study and the climatic significance of these emissions, it remains unclear what drives large, within-site variations. While geophysical factors (e.g., soil temperature) are known to correlate with methane (CH4) flux, measurable variance in these parameters often declines as spatial and temporal scales become finer. As methane emitted from wetlands is the direct, net product of microbial metabolisms which both produce and degrade CH4, it stands to reason that characterizing the spatial variability of microbial communities within a wetland—both horizontally and vertically—may help explain observed variances in flux. To that end, we surveyed microbial communities to a depth of 1 m across an ombrotrophic peat bog in Maine, USA using amplicon sequencing and gene expression techniques. Surface methane fluxes and geophysical factors were concurrently measured. Across the first meter of peat at the site, we observed significant changes in the abundance and composition of methanogenic taxa at every depth sampled, with variance in methanogen abundance explaining 70% of flux heterogeneity at a subset of plots. Among measured environmental factors, only peat depth emerged as correlated with flux, and had significant impact on the abundance and composition of methane-cycling communities. These conclusions suggest that a heightened awareness of how microbial communities are structured and spatially distributed within wetlands could offer improved insights into predicting CH4 flux dynamics. Safety from crime is a fundamental human need. In Maslow’s hierarchy, safety is one of the foundational needs of well-being. The built environment should be safe to use at all times of the day and for all groups of people. After dark, the appearance of the outdoor environment changes dramatically, and this could impact the opportunities for crime. This study investigated the impact of daylight on the rates of different types of crime by comparing the crime rates during selected periods of daylight and darkness. The study used records of crime data from the Metropolitan Police Service. By studying crimes in the week on either side of the twice-yearly clock change, it is possible to compare periods that are dark in one week and light in the other at the same clock time. Where the time at which the crime took place was known, and using the GPS coordinates of the specific crime, the solar altitude was calculated and used to determine if it was light or dark at the time of the crime. A similar calculation was used to see if the crime would have been in the dark or light in the week on the other side of the clock change. The headline result is that there was 4.8% (OR 1.07) more crime in the dark periods than the light ones. However, this increase was not uniform across all crime types, and there were some further complications in some results due to potential changes in the behavior of some victims after dark. For the crimes of theft from a person and robbery of personal property, there was a significant increase during the dark period. The availability of light had an impact on the rate of certain crimes. Whilst this does not provide any information about the impact of street lighting on crime, it does provide some idea of by how much crime could be reduced if better lighting was provided.

Background Total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) has been demonstrated to be an effective treatment for multiple shoulder pathologies. The purpose of our study was to compare the relative value units (RVUs) per minute of surgical time for primary and revision TSA. Methods The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database was queried to identify patients that underwent primary TSA, one-component revision TSA, and two-component revision TSA between January 1, 2015 and December 31, 2017 using current procedure terminology codes. RVUs were divided by mean operative time for each procedure to determine the amount of revenue generated per minute. The European Copernicus programme plans to install a constellation of multiple polar orbiting satellites (Copernicus Anthropogenic CO2 Monitoring Mission, CO2M mission) for observing atmospheric CO2 content with the aim to estimate fossil fuel CO2 emissions. We explore the impact of potential CO2M observations of column-averaged CO2 (XCO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and aerosols in a 200 × 200 km2 domain around Berlin. For the quantification of anticipated XCO2 random and systematic errors we developed and applied new error parameterisation formulae based on artificial neural networks. For the interpretation of these data, we further established a CCFFDAS modelling chain from parameters of emission models to XCO2 and NO2 observations to simulate the 24 h periods preceeding simulated CO2M overpasses over the study area. For one overpass in winter and one in summer, we present a number of assessments of observation impact in terms of the posterior uncertainty in fossil fuel emissions on scales ranging from 2 to 200 km. This means the assessments include temporal and spatial scales typically not covered by inventories. The assessments differentiate the fossil fuel CO2 emissions into two sectors, an energy generation sector (power plants) and the complement, which we call “other sector.” We find that combined measurements of XCO2 and aerosols provide a powerful constraint on emissions from larger power plants; the uncertainty in fossil fuel emissions from the largest three power plants in the domain was reduced by 60%–90% after assimilating the observations. Likewise, these measurements achieve an uncertainty reduction for the other sector that increases when aggregated to larger spatial scales. When aggregated over Berlin the uncertainty reduction for the other sector varies between 28% and 48%. Our assessments show a considerable contribution of aerosol observations onboard CO2M to the constraint of the XCO2 measurements on emissions from all power plants and for the other sector on all spatial scales. NO2 measurements onboard CO2M provide a powerful additional constraint on the emissions from power plants and from the other sector. We further apply a Jacobian representation of the CCFFDAS modelling chain to decompose a simulated CO2 column in terms of spatial emission impact. This analysis reveals the complex structure of the footprint of an observed CO2 column, which indicates the limits of simple mass balances approaches for interpretation of such observations.

The BlueFlux field campaign, supported by NASA’s Carbon Monitoring System, will develop prototype blue carbon products to inform coastal carbon management. While blue carbon has been suggested as a nature-based climate solution (NBS) to remove carbon dioxide (CO _2 ) from the atmosphere, these ecosystems also release additional greenhouse gases (GHGs) such as methane (CH _4 ) and are sensitive to disturbances including hurricanes and sea-level rise. To understand blue carbon as an NBS, BlueFlux is conducting multi-scale measurements of CO _2 and CH _4 fluxes across coastal landscapes, combined with long-term carbon burial, in Southern Florida using chambers, flux towers, and aircraft combined with remote-sensing observations for regional upscaling. During the first deployment in April 2022, CO _2 uptake and CH _4 emissions across the Everglades National Park averaged −4.9 ± 4.7 μ mol CO _2 m ^−2 s ^−1 and 19.8 ± 41.1 nmol CH _4 m ^−2 s ^−1 , respectively. When scaled to the region, mangrove CH _4 emissions offset the mangrove CO _2 uptake by about 5% (assuming a 100 year CH _4 global warming potential of 28), leading to total net uptake of 31.8 Tg CO _2 -eq y ^−1 . Subsequent field campaigns will measure diurnal and seasonal changes in emissions and integrate measurements of long-term carbon burial to develop comprehensive annual and long-term GHG budgets to inform blue carbon as a climate solution.

A series of AlxGa(1−x)As ternary alloys were grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) at the technologically relevant composition range, x < 0.45, and characterized using spectroscopic ellipsometry to provide accurate refractive index values in the wavelength region below the bandgap. Particular attention is given to O-band and C-band telecommunication wavelengths around 1.3 µm and 1.55 µm, as well as at 825 nm. MBE gave a very high accuracy for grown layer thicknesses, and the alloys’ precise compositions and bandgap values were confirmed using high-resolution x-ray diffraction and photoluminescence, to improve the refractive index model fitting accuracy. This work is the first systematic study for MBE-grown AlxGa(1−x)As across a wide spectral range. In addition, we employed a very rigorous measurement-fitting procedure, which we present in detail.

The Paris Agreement establishes a transparency framework for anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO _2 ) emissions. It’s core component are inventory-based national greenhouse gas emission reports, which are complemented by independent estimates derived from atmospheric CO _2 measurements combined with inverse modelling. It is, however, not known whether such a Monitoring and Verification Support (MVS) capacity is capable of constraining estimates of fossil-fuel emissions to an extent that is sufficient to provide valuable additional information. The CO _2 Monitoring Mission (CO2M), planned as a constellation of satellites measuring column-integrated atmospheric CO _2 concentration (XCO _2 ), is expected to become a key component of such an MVS capacity. Here we provide a novel assessment of the potential of a comprehensive data assimilation system using simulated XCO _2 and other observations to constrain fossil fuel CO _2 emission estimates for an exemplary 1-week period in 2008. We find that CO2M enables useful weekly estimates of country-scale fossil fuel emissions independent of national inventories. When extrapolated from the weekly to the annual scale, uncertainties in emissions are comparable to uncertainties in inventories, so that estimates from inventories and from the MVS capacity can be used for mutual verification. We further demonstrate an alternative, synergistic mode of operation, with the purpose of delivering a best fossil fuel emission estimate. In this mode, the assimilation system uses not only XCO _2 and the other data streams of the previous (verification) mode, but also the inventory information. Finally, we identify further steps towards an operational MVS capacity.

The magnitude of organic carbon burial in lakes and reservoirs is poorly constrained. Here, using a compilation of modern data from the literature and statistical modeling, the authors estimate a global yearly organic carbon burial of 0.15 Pg C in inland waters, of which 40% is stored in reservoirs.

Summary: Background: Death and injury due to motor vehicle crashes is the world's fifth leading cause of mortality and morbidity. City and urban designs might play a role in mitigating the global burden of road transport injury to an extent that has not been captured by traditional safe system approaches. We aimed to determine the relationship between urban design and road trauma across the globe. Methods: Applying a combined convolutional neural network and graph-based approach, 1692 cities capturing one third of the world's population were classified into types based on urban design characteristics represented in sample maps. Associations between identified city types, characteristics contained within sample maps, and the burden of road transport injury as measured by disability adjusted life-years were estimated through univariate and multivariate analyses, controlling for the influence of economic activity. Findings: Between Mar 1, 2017, and Dec 24, 2018, nine global city types based on a final sample of 1632 cities were identified. Burden of road transport injury was an estimated two-times higher (risk ratio 2·05, 95% CI 1·84–2·27) for the poorest performing city type compared with the best performing city type, culminating in an estimated loss of 8·71 (8·08–9·25) million disability-adjusted life-years per year attributable to suboptimal urban design. City types that featured a greater proportion of railed public transport networks combined with dense road networks characterised by smaller blocks showed the lowest rates of road traffic injury. Interpretation: This study highlights the important role that city and urban design plays in mitigating road transport injury burden at a global scale. It is recommended that road and transport safety efforts promote urban design that features characteristics inherent in identified high-performance city types including higher density road infrastructure and high rates of public transit. Hospitals are controlled yet complex ecosystems which provide a therapeutic environment that promotes healing, wellbeing and work efficiency for patients and staff. As these buildings accommodate the sick and vulnerable, occupant wellbeing and good indoor environmental quality (IEQ) that deals with indoor air quality (IAQ), thermal comfort, lighting and acoustics are important objectives. As the specialist nature of hospital function demands highly controlled indoor environments, this makes them energy intensive buildings due to the complex and varying specifications for their functions and operations. This paper reports on a holistic building performance evaluation covering aspects of indoor air quality, thermal comfort, lighting, acoustics, and energy use. It assesses the performance issues and inter-relationships between IEQ and energy in a new building on a hospital campus in the city of Bristol, United Kingdom. The empirical evidence collated from this case study and the feedback received from the hospital staff help identify the endemic issues and constraints related to hospital buildings, such as the need for robust ventilation strategies in hospitals in urban areas that mitigate the effect of indoor and outdoor air pollution and ensuring the use of planned new low-carbon technologies. Whilst the existing guidelines for building design provide useful instructions for the protection of hospital buildings against ingress of particulate matter from outdoors, more advanced filtration strategies may be required to enact chemical reactions required to control the concentration levels of pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide and benzene. Further lessons for improved performance in operation and maintenance of hospitals are highlighted. These include ensuring that the increasingly available metering and monitoring data in new buildings, through building management systems, is used for efficient and optimal building operations for better IEQ and energy management. Overall, the study highlights the need for an integrated and holistic approach to building performance to ensure that healthy environments are provided while energy efficiency targets are met.

Good practice in lighting energy consumption in schools is regarded to be around 13 kWh/m2 per annum (CIBSE LG5, 2011). However, recent post-occupancy evaluations reveal lighting energy consumption in schools to be above 30kWh/m2 p.a., despite the use of energy efficient lamps, switching based on infrared presence/absence detection, and digital controls for daylight-linked dimming. To identify causes of excess energy consumption for lighting, this study undertook detailed post-occupancy field measurements of the lighting consumption of two recently-completed K schools – a small primary and a large secondary – equipped with digitally-addressable lighting interface (DALI) systems. Instrumentation of individual light fittings was carried out to obtain an accurate understanding of their switching and dimming characteristics. Results were compared with estimates of kilowatt hours per square metre per year (the Lighting Energy Numeric Indicator), calculated using the spreadsheet provided to support the European Standard that defines LENI, and against estimates of disaggregated whole-building energy consumption using the CIBSE energy assessment tool TM22. The post-occupancy evaluations uncovered excessive lighting consumption in classrooms and circulation area lighting, issues with DALI system installation and commissioning, and problems with the usability of lighting controls. Allied shortcomings included dysfunctional energy metering, lack of system fine-tuning after handover, and inaccuracies with as-built records. Methodological shortcomings were identified with the industry-standard methods of assessing lighting consumption. Recommendations are given on ways to mitigate excessive lighting energy consumption and to improve the predictive power of the current energy assessment methods.

In this paper, we demonstrate the successful incorporation of sulfate and borate into SrFeO3-δ, and characterise the effect on the structure and conductivity, with a view to possible utilisation as a cathode material in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells. The incorporation of low levels of sulfate/borate is sufficient to cause a change from a tetragonal to a cubic cell. Moreover, whereas heat treatment of undoped SrFeO3-δ under N2 leads to a transformation to brownmillerite Sr2Fe2O5 with oxygen vacancy ordering, the sulfate/borate-doped samples remain cubic under the same conditions. Thus, sulfate/borate doping appears to be successful in introducing oxide ion vacancy disorder in this system.

Background: Hospital staff frequently performs the same process hundreds to thousands of times a day. Customizable Internet of Things buttons are small, wirelessly-enabled devices that trigger specific actions with the press of an integrated button and have the potential to automate some of these repetitive tasks. In addition, IoT buttons generate logs of triggered events that can be used for future process improvements. Although Internet of Things buttons have seen some success as consumer products, little has been reported on their application in hospital systems.Objective: We discuss potential hospital applications categorized by the intended user group (patient or hospital staff). In addition, we examine key technological considerations, including network connectivity, security, and button management systems.Methods: In order to meaningfully deploy Internet of Things buttons in a hospital system, we propose an implementation framework grounded in the Plan-Do-Study-Act method.Results: We plan to deploy Internet of Things buttons within our hospital system to deliver real-time notifications in public-facing tasks such as restroom cleanliness and critical supply restocking. We expect results from this pilot in the next year.Conclusions: Overall, Internet of Things buttons have significant promise; future rigorous evaluations are needed to determine the impact of Internet of Things buttons in real-world health care settings. A series of "proof-of-concept" projects are set out aimed at bringing together built environment researchers attempting to understand what constitutes ‘comfortable’ space and neuroscientists investigating the functional characteristics of the human brain. The long-term goal is to address the question of whether there are regions of the brain that are specifically engaged when people experience spaces they consider to be comfortable, pleasing or even beautiful. Glare is an area of research that has been recognised as a problem in both interior and exterior lighting. Recent advances in technology make it an ideal candidate for the proposed “proof-of-concept” study. The mapping of brain functions through functional magnetic resonance imaging, the mapping of luminance distributionsin a visual scene, and the study of distraction and its influence on discomfort glare can be combined to form the basis of an innovative tool box for new research.

Glacier ecosystems are a significant source of bioavailable, yet ancient dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Characterizing DOC in Mendenhall Glacier outflow (southeast Alaska) we document a seasonal persistence to the radiocarbon-depleted signature of DOC, highlighting ancient DOC as a ubiquitous feature of glacier outflow. We observed no systematic depletion in Δ ^14 C-DOC with increasing discharge during the melt season that would suggest mobilization of an aged subglacial carbon store. However, DOC concentration, δ ^13 C-DOC, Δ ^14 C-DOC and fluorescence signatures appear to have been influenced by runoff from vegetated hillslopes above the glacier during onset and senescence of melt. In the peak glacier melt period, the Δ ^14 C-DOC of stream samples at the outflow (−181.7 to −355.3‰) was comparable to the Δ ^14 C-DOC for snow samples from the accumulation zone (−207.2 to −390.9‰), suggesting that ancient DOC from the glacier surface is exported in glacier runoff. The pre-aged DOC in glacier snow and runoff is consistent with contributions from fossil fuel combustion sources similar to those documented previously in ice cores and thus provides evidence for anthropogenic perturbation of the carbon cycle. Overall, our results emphasize the need to further characterize DOC inputs to glacier ecosystems, particularly in light of predicted changes in glacier mass and runoff in the coming century.

Meeting the educational needs of students currently requires moving towardcollaborative electronic and mobile learning systems that parallel the vision ofWeb 2.0. However, factors such as data freedom, brokerage, interconnectivityand the Internet of Things add to a vision for Web 3.0 that will require con-sideration in the development of future campus-based, distance and vocationalstudy. So, education can, in future, be expected to require deeper technologicalconnections between students and learning environments, based on significantuse of sensors, mobile devices, cloud computing and rich-media visualization.Therefore, we discuss challenges associated with such a futuristic campus con-text, including how learning materials and environments may be enriched byit. As an additional novel element the potential for much of that enrichmentto be realized through development by students, within the curriculum, is alsoconsidered. We will conclude that much of the technology required to embracethe vision of Web 3.0 in education already exists, but that further research inkey areas is required for the concept to achieve its full potential.

Recent advances in ingestible sensors have enabled in situ detection of gastrointestinal (GI) biomarkers which shows great potential in shifting the paradigm of diagnosing GI and systemic diseases. However, the humid, acidic gastric environment is extremely harsh to electrically powered sensors, which limits their capacity for long term, continuous monitoring. Here, we propose an encapsulation approach for a gas sensor integrated into a nasogastric (NG) tube that overcomes chemical corrosion, electrical short, and mechanical collision in a gastric environment to enable continuous gaseous biomarkers monitoring. The coating effects on the sensitivity, signal latency, and repeatability are investigated. Our long-term continuous monitoring in vitro results show that the proposed coating method enables the gas sensors to function reliably and consistently in the simulated GI environment for more than 1 week. The encapsulation is composed of Polycaprolactone (PCL) to protect against mechanical scratching and Parylene C to prevent a sensor from chemical corrosion and electrical short. The average life-time of the sensor with 10 micrometers Parylene coating is about 3.6 days. Increasing the coating thickness to 20 micrometers results in 10.0 days. In terms of repeatability, 10 micrometers and 20 micrometers Parylene C coated sensors have a standard deviation of 1.30% and 2.10% for its within sensor response, and 5.19% and 3.06% between sensors respectively.
