We study a system of N two-level atoms interacting with a coherent field a resonant cavity in a self-consistent manner. No direct correlation between the atoms, such as induced by dipole–dipole interaction, is included. Initially all atoms are not exited, and there are n0 photons in the cavity. We show that the system reveals collective-like behavior, which stems from mutual influence of the atoms and coherent field in the cavity. In distinction from conventional dressing of atomic states by strong electromagnetic field, the system of N two-level atoms in a resonant cavity is actually dressed by both the number of photons and the number of atoms N. This double dressing results in both N and n0-dependent oscillation frequency, ω(n0,N). At N>>n0 the spectral density contains, apart from the main peak at the collective atomic frequency gN, additional features at odd sub-harmonics. There is interference signature at the double dressing spectrum which has half-peaks and half-dips that is a synchronization among the frequencies of photon and the atomic dressings. It is a beautiful manifestation of quantum interference in the present novel double dressing by the number n of photons and by the number N of atoms.

Many quantum device signals are proportional to the number of the participating atoms that take part in the detection devices. Among these are optical magnetometers, atomic clocks, quantum communications and atom interferometers. One way to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio is to introduce atom entanglement that increases the signal in a super-radiant-like effect. A coherent em field inside a laser cavity is suggested to achieve atoms’ correlation/entanglement. This may also play an important role in the basic quantum arena of many-body physics. An initial novel experiment to test the realization of atoms’ correlation is described here. A Cs optical magnetometer is used as a tool to test the operation of a cell-in-cavity laser and its characteristics. A vapor cell is inserted into an elongated external cavity of the pump laser in Littrow configuration. Higher atom polarization and reduced laser linewidth are obtained leading to better magnetometer sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio. The Larmor frequency changes of the Free Induction Decay of optically pumped Cs atomic polarization in the ambient earth magnetic field at room temperature is measured. Temporal changes in the magnetic field of less than 10 pT/√Hz are measured. The first-order dependence of the magnetic field on temperature and temperature gradients is eliminated, important in many practical applications. Single and gradiometric magnetometer configurations are presented.

SnO is known to undergo metallization at ∼ 5 GPa while retaining its tetragonal symmetry. However, the mechanism of this metallization remains speculative. We present a combined experimental and computational study including pressure-dependent infrared spectroscopy, resistivity, and neutron powder diffraction measurements. We show that, while the excess charge mobility increases with pressure, the lattice distortion, in terms of the z-position of Sn, is reduced. Both processes follow a similar trend that consists of two stages, a moderate increment up to ∼ 3 GPa followed by a rapid increase at higher pressure. This behavior is discussed in terms of polaron delocalization. The pressure-induced delocalization is dictated by the electron–phonon coupling and related local anisotropic lattice distortion at the polaron site. We show that these polaronic states are stable at 0 GPa with a binding energy of ∼ 0.35 eV. Upon increasing the pressure, the polaron binding energy is reduced with the electron–phonon coupling strength of Γ and M modes, enabling the electrical phase transition to occur at ∼ 3.8 GPa. Further compression increases the total electron–phonon coupling strength up to a maximum at 10 GPa, which is a strong evidence of dome-shaped superconductivity transition with Tc = 1.67 K.

The factorial design technique is implemented to achieve greater accuracy in the determination of magnetic field distribution within a single cell of spin-exchange relaxation-free atomic magnetometer. Three-dimensional magnetic field distribution within a single vapor cell can be found by consecutively pumping, layer by layer, all the cell volumes perpendicular to the probe laser beam, detected by a photodiode array. Thus each element of the array collects information about the magnetic field in the small volume (voxel) which forms when the corresponding part of the probe beam and optically pumped layer cross. One of the most effective ways to enhance measurement accuracy is repeated pumping of the layers and averaging the measured results. However, the measurement time is multiplied several times due to the repeated scanning of the cell volume. The suggested technique enables increased measurement accuracy of each voxel while preserving the number of measurements. Magnetic field distribution is determined by the illumination of the cell layers one by one or simultaneously, according to a special algorithm, with subsequent multifactorial analysis of the obtained results.
