Addressing strongly interacting matter in the region of energy density where the hadronic gas phase coexists with the quark-gluon plasma phase, we discuss how thermodynamic consistency can be used to constrain the equation of state for uniform matter and we illustrate the method by constructing a T_c-dependent family of thermodynamically consistent equations of state based on simple spline interpolations between the gas and plasma phases.

Water electrolysis will be used to produce renewable hydrogen for energy storage and Power-to-X applications in the future renewable-energy-based energy systems. Therefore, the energy efficiency of hydrogen production will probably become a major issue. In this study, the effect of practical supply power converters on the specific energy consumption of megawatt (MW)-scale alkaline electrolyzers is studied and compared with an ideal dc power supply. The current quality and the stack specific energy consumption are studied in the case of traditional thyristor rectifiers and a transistor-based converter. The stack specific energy consumption is analyzed based on the simulated current waveforms and the electrical equivalent circuit of the electrolyzer stack. It is found that the transistor-based converter offers up to 14% lower electrolyzer stack specific energy consumption than the 6-pulse thyristor rectifier and up to 9.2% lower electrolyzer stack specific energy consumption than the 12-pulse thyristor rectifier as the current varies between 5000 and 1000 A. The simulated change in the stack specific energy consumption of the MW-scale alkaline water electrolyzer outweighs the losses occurring in the rectifiers. Further, selection of the ac voltage level may have a more adverse effect on the stack specific energy consumption with the thyristor rectifier topologies compared with the transistor-based topologies. Electromagnetic design of a moving magnet frictionless linear actuator with self‐holding functionality for mechanical gear shifting in a transmission application is presented. The actuator consists of a tubular magnetic circuit with stationary armature and axially moving rotating permanent magnet assembly with radial magnetisation in the air gap. The armature contains a two‐piece magnetic core with a space for a winding. The effects of armature slot opening and magnetic circuit materials on the self‐holding force and the acting force are studied in the whole moving range. The interest in green hydrogen has been increasing in recent years for several applications, such as energy storage and different industrial sectors. The green hydrogen is produced from water electrolysis supplied by renewable electricity. The operation of industrial large-scale water electrolysis is characterized by a high DC current in the kiloampere range and a few hundred volts. Therefore, the rectifier unit plays an important role in converting AC current of the electricity grid into DC current supplied to the electrolyzer. The power electronic converters are also considered as one of the main cost components of the water electrolyzer system. The objective of this paper is to study whether the operation at a higher voltage than typical values (200 V–300 V) can be beneficial both for the cost and energy efficiency of the power converters in water electrolyzer systems. In this study, three different rectifier topologies considered for an industrial-scale electrolyzer are analyzed and compared in terms of energy efficiency and cost. Power-electronics-based power-hardware-in-loop (PHIL) simulator for water electrolyzer emulation with a nominal current of 405 A is developed to study the electrolyzer as part of a smart grid and to analyze the characteristics of various electrolyzer power supply electronics. A simplified model of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer is implemented into the PHIL simulator to describe the voltage and current characteristics of the electrolyzer stack. The model is verified comparing the current and the estimated hydrogen production of the PHIL simulator with the measured values of the commercial PEM electrolyzer following the measured solar photovoltaic (PV) system output power. Fast methods to estimate iron losses of the permanent magnet traction motor during the drive cycle of the electrical vehicle are compared. The methods use the iron loss information calculated by a finite-element analysis as a function of rotational speed both at no load and with a short-circuited stator to take into account the variable frequency and field weakening of the traction motor. The effect of iron losses on the optimal current components, providing the maximum efficiency, is studied. Several methods yield a good accuracy even based on the no-load iron loss only, but the accuracy can be improved especially in deep field weakening by including the short-circuit iron loss information in the analysis. This paper introduces a method for the drive cycle performance analysis of a permanent-magnet traction motor based on a fast magnetostatic finite-element analysis (FEA). The flux linkage and torque behavior of the permanent-magnet synchronous machine is studied by a nonlinear magnetostatic FEA as a function of direct- and quadrature-axis stator current components. In the analytical machine performance analysis, the current combinations producing the desired torque and minimizing the losses are determined. The iron loss is calculated with the time-transient FEA at no load. The maximum stator flux linkage, limited by the battery voltage, is taken into account. The drive cycle analysis, based on optimal current component surfaces, is carried out for a traction motor of an electric sports car. The design process of direct-driven permanent-magnet (PM) synchronous machines (PMSMs) for a full electric 4 \times 4 sports car is presented. The rotor structure of the machine consists of two PM layers embedded inside the rotor laminations, thus resulting in some inverse saliency, where the q-axis inductance is larger than the d-axis one. An integer slot stator winding was selected to fully take advantage of the additional reluctance torque. The performance characteristics of the designed PMSMs were calculated by applying a 2-D finite-element method. Most of the high-power, low-speed, direct-driven permanent magnet synchronous generators for wind energy applications apply a cooling solution where the stator core is divided into a number of substacks. Cooling air is blown through the stator through radial cooling channels formed between the adjacent stator substacks. The use of the stator substacks has an effect on the equivalent length of the generator, and thus, if neglected, leads to an incorrect no-load voltage and synchronous inductance calculation. In this paper, the design issues related to the thermal and electromagnetic design of permanent magnet synchronous machines are highlighted. The analysis starts with a preliminary electromagnetic design. Then, the allowable number and width of cooling ducts are calculated based on the maximum allowable temperatures and fluid flow speed with a thermal resistance network model. The effect of cooling ducts on the no-load voltage and synchronous inductances of the machine are discussed in detail. The calculated no-load voltage and synchronous inductances are used in the analytical performance evaluation. The effect of lamination stack ends and radial cooling channels on the effective stator stack length, no-load voltage, and synchronous inductances of a permanent-magnet synchronous machine are studied using three-dimensional finite element analysis. The stack ends and the radial cooling channels decrease the equivalent electrical length of the machine, thus leading to the fact that a two-dimensional (2-D) approach overestimates the no-load voltage. The effect of stack ends and radial cooling channels on the electrical length of the machine can be compensated by making the rotor stack and permanent magnets longer than the corresponding stator stack. It is shown that in case of no radial cooling channels, synchronous inductances are typically overestimated with the 2-D approach. Mechanical interactions between a wind turbine and a direct-driven permanent-magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) are studied, and a model to analyze the system behavior is suggested. The proposed model can be applied to analyze the mechanical vibrations of direct-driven wind turbine installations both in steady state and in dynamic cases. The cogging torque and torque ripple of the PMSG are used as excitation sources in the mechanical model. Four different permanent-magnet rotor constructions are analyzed. It is shown that the maximum allowable value of the cogging torque of the direct-driven permanent-magnet wind generator in this case is 1.5%–2% of the rated torque even when the corresponding resonance frequency does not occur in the operational speed range of the wind turbine. Several methods to improve torque quality in direct-driven permanent magnet megawatt-range wind generators are compared with each other, including magnet width variation, skewing, magnet shaping, buring magnets inside the rotor lamination, stator slot placement, and asymmetric magnets. Both the load torque quality and the cogging torque are analyzed by the two-dimensional (2D) finite element method (FEM). In the present research work, an electrical resistance tomography (ERT) system is utilized as a means for real-time fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) during a reactive crystallization process. The calcium carbonate crystallization is part of the carbon capture and utilization scheme where process monitoring and malfunction diagnostics strategies are presented. The graphical logic representation of the fault tree analysis methodology is used to develop the system failure states. The measurement consistency due to the use of a single electrode from a set of ERT electrodes for malfunction identification is experimentally and quantitatively investigated based on the sensor sensitivity and standard deviation criteria. Electrical current measurements are employed to develop a LabVIEW-based process automation program by using the process-specific knowledge and historical process data. Averaged electrical current is correlated to the mechanical failure of the stirrer through standard deviation evaluation, and slopes of the measured data are used to monitor the pump and concentrations status. The performance of the implemented methodology for detecting the induced faults and abnormalities is tested at different operating conditions, and a basic signal-based alarming technique is developed. Anthropogenic emissions of CO 2 and other greenhouse gases have increased since the pre-industrial era, driven largely by economic and population growth, and are now higher than ever. In this scope, hybrid biological–inorganic systems represent a sustainable and versatile chemical synthesis platform using CO 2 as a feedstock which realizes the idea of 'Cleaner Production'. Practical implementation of hybrid biological–inorganic systems for the production of value-added chemical products requires development of scalable and robust electrobioreactors with a high energy efficiency and an adequate size. This work reports an in situ water electrolyzer stack design as part of an electrobioreactor system required for the pilot-scale operation of the hybrid biological–inorganic process approaching the aforementioned requirements. The electrolyzer is designed by applying fluid dynamics simulation tools to model the electrolyte flow. The design takes into consideration the problem of leakage currents, reported in the previous works, which is tackled by applying an electrically insulating coating. Different electrode surface modification approaches, such as coating with electrocatalysts and etching, are used to further enhance the performance and energy efficiency of the electrolyzer. The performance of the electrolyzer stack was evaluated in a pH-neutral solution required for the hybrid biological–inorganic processes. The in situ water electrolyzer developed in this study showed a high Faraday efficiency close to 90% and acceptable specific energy consumption below 90 kWh kg H2 −1. The obtained energy-efficiency values are the highest reported for similar applications with a similar scale which emphasizes the successful design of the in situ water electrolyzer stack. All data collected during experimental work might be applied to further investigation, simulation, and optimization of electrobioreactors operating at neutral pH. Industrial water electrolyzers apply direct current in kiloampere ranges. Therefore, rectifiers are typically based on thyristors despite the high amplitude current fluctuation excited by the rectifier. This paper studies the effect of thyristor rectifiers on the power quality of the electrolyzer stack and the supplying AC grid. The thyristor bridge excites high current and power fluctuation causing additional losses in the electrolytic cells. Further, the both AC supply side and DC output power factors are low especially under partial load conditions. The reactive power is divided into phase shift and distortion components. In the case of thyristor rectifier without any passive filter components the distortion reactive power component is dominating. The simulated results are supported by the power factor measurements of an industrial alkaline water electrolyzer. The ripple of the supplied direct current has a significant effect on the energy efficiency of the water electrolyzer cell. Hydrogen production is defined by the current mean value, but current harmonics generate additional losses in the electrolyzer cell. However, the direct measurement of the DC current in the kiloampere range may be a challenging task compared with the voltage, which is practically in the range of a few hundreds volts in the electrolyzer stack. The effect of current harmonics on the energy efficiency and the voltage mean and root-mean-square (RMS) values is analyzed analytically based on the measured polarization curve of the PEM electrolyzer cell. The results show that both in the case of a theoretical sinusoidal current ripple and a practical thyristor bridge supply, the voltage mean or RMS values do not give a reliable estimate of the power quality.
