There is a current interest in the study of the geochemical behavior of the rare earth elements (REE) in aquatic systems since their identification as potential microcontaminants in natural waters. In this context, here we report the concentrations and patterns of dissolved REE (dREE) in the waters of the Gulf of Cádiz (GoC) and its major estuaries (Guadiana, Tinto-Odiel and Guadalquivir). Contamination in this area by metals has been extensively reported, linked to acid-mine inputs resulting from the mineralization of the Iberian Pyrite Belt, discharged mainly to the Tinto-Odiel river. However, the impact of these inputs on the concentrations and distribution of the dREE in the coastal waters of the GoC has not been addressed yet. Accordingly, elevated concentrations of dREE were obtained in the Tinto-Odiel estuary compared to the Guadiana and Guadalquivir, reflecting the impact of acid-mine drainage on this system. Only a significant fraction of anthropogenic gadolium (Gd) was observed in the Guadalquivir estuary, as a result of the input from major urban areas, where anthropogenic Gd fractions higher than 70% over the total dissolved pool were obtained for the freshwater end-member. Regarding the surface waters of the GoC, typical NE Atlantic distribution patterns of dREEs were obtained, but modified by two different end-members within this region. Accordingly, and despite the low water discharge of the Tinto-Odiel river, its elevated concentrations lead to an increase in the concentrations of dREEs in the nearshore waters of the GoC and producing a distinctive signature as observed for the MREE anomalies and HREE/LREE ratios. At the easternmost stations, close to the Strait of Gibraltar, these signals are also impacted by the inflow of Mediterranean waters and also by the discharge of the Guadalquivir river. The invasive seaweed Rugulopteryx okamurae has recently arrived in Europe from the western Pacific. Its explosive spread on coastal areas of the Gulf of Cádiz (GoC), Strait of Gibraltar and Alboran Sea is spoiling native coastal ecosystems and inflicting heavy losses on ecosystem services. We discovered for the first time large amounts (up to 17 g m–2) of detached R. okamurae thalli on deep-sea bottoms of the GoC that are being dragged from the Strait of Gibraltar shores into the NE Atlantic by the Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW). Laboratory experiments revealed that collected unattached macroalgae from deep-sea locations were alive and healthy and maintained intact photosynthetic capacity after long dark periods, suggesting a tremendous resilience and invasive potential. Given the rapid transport of healthy thalli by the MOW and massive accumulation of them in the GoC basin, R. okamurae could represent a major threat to NE Atlantic ecosystems, affecting not only coastal but also deep-sea habitats. The dense and deep water flow that leaves the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic flows through the upper and middle slope of the Gulf of Cádiz as a powerful bottom stream that models and interacts with bathymetry. The detailed analysis of underwater images, obtained with a photogrammetric sled in the central area of the upper and middle slope of the Gulf of Cádiz, together with multibeam bathymetry and oceanographic and sediment types data, has allowed conducting a detailed study of the seafloor microtopography and the predominant oceanographic dynamics in the study area. Different fine-scale spatial bedforms were identified, such as ripples, dunes, burrows, mounds, obstacle marks, rock bottoms, and low-roughness bottoms using underwater images. Besides, a geostatistical study of the different video transects studied was carried out and allowed us to differentiate three types of bottoms depending on the processes that affect their microtopography. Global circulation of intermediate water masses has been extensively studied; however, its regional and local circulation along continental margins and variability and implications on sea floor morphologies are still not well known. In this study the intermediate water mass variability in the Gulf of Cádiz (GoC) and adjacent areas has been analysed and its implications discussed. Remarkable seasonal variations of the Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) and the Subarctic Intermediate Water (SAIW) are determined. During autumn a greater presence of the AAIW seems to be related to a reduction in the presence of SAIW and Eastern North Atlantic Central Water (ENACW). This interaction also affects the Mediterranean Water (MW), which is pushed by the AAIW toward the upper continental slope. In the rest of the seasons, the SAIW is the predominant water mass reducing the presence of the AAIW. This seasonal variability for the predominance of these intermediate water masses is explained in terms of the concatenation of several wind-driven processes acting during the different seasons. Our finding is important for a better understanding of regional intermediate water mass variability with implications in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), but further research is needed in order to decode their changes during the geological past and their role, especially related to the AAIW, in controlling both the morphology and the sedimentation along the continental slopes. Spatio-temporal variations in the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) were studied during eight oceanographic cruises conducted between March 2014 and February 2016 in surface waters of the eastern shelf of the Gulf of Cádiz (SW Iberian Peninsula) between the Guadalquivir river and Cape Trafalgar. pCO2 presents a range of variation between 320.6 and 513.6 µ atm with highest values during summer and autumn and lowest during spring and winter. For the whole study, pCO2 shows a linear dependence with temperature, and spatially there is a general decrease from coastal to offshore stations associated with continental inputs and an increase in the zones deeper than 400 m related to the influence of the eastward branch of the Azores Current. The study area acts as a source of CO2 to the atmosphere during summer and autumn and as a sink in spring and winter with a mean value for the study period of -0.18±1.32 mmol m -2 d -1. In the Guadalquivir and Sancti Petri transects, the CO2 fluxes decrease towards offshore, whereas in the Trafalgar transect fluxes increase due to the presence of an upwelling. Since its foundation, 100 years ago, the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) has been observing and measuring the ocean characteristics. Here is a summary of the initiatives of the IEO in the field of the operational oceanography. Some systems like the tide gauges network has been working for more than 70 years. The standard sections began at different moments depending on the local projects, and nowadays there are more than 180 coastal stations and deep-sea ones that are systematically sampled, obtaining physical and biochemical measurements. At this moment, the Observing System includes six permanent moorings equipped with current meters, an opensea ocean-meteorological buoy offshore Santander and a sea-surface temperature satellite image station. It also supports the Spanish contribution to the Argo international programme with 47 deployed profilers, and continuous monitoring thermosalinometers, meteorological stations and vesselmounted acoustic Doppler current profilers on the research vessel fleet. The system is completed with the contribution to the Northwest Iberian peninsula and Gibraltar observatories, and the development of regional prediction models. All these systematic measurements allow the IEO to give responses to ocean research activities, official agencies requirements and industrial and main society demands such as navigation, resource management, risks management, recreation, as well as for management development pollution-related economic activities or marine ecosystems. All these networks are linked to international initiatives, framed largely in supranational programmes of Earth observation sponsored by the United Nations or the European Union. The synchronic observation system permits a spatio-temporal description of some events, such as new deep water formation in the Mediterranean Sea and the injection of heat to intermediate waters in the Bay of Biscay after some colder northern storms in winter 2005. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a major component of the organic matter pool, playing a key role in the global ocean functioning. However, studies on DOM in waters of many ocean regions, such as the Gulf of Cadiz (GoC), are poorly known. Advanced aquatic sensors enable autonomous for long-term deployments in situ collection of high frequency DOM data using fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) as a proxy. The present study evaluates the relevance of FDOM, the estuarine influence and the environmental factors that determine its spatial distribution in the GoC. Our results suggest that the GoC water mass, under the estuarine influence of three main rivers, is receiving large amounts of DOM transported mainly by Guadalquivir and Guadiana rivers and much less from Tinto-Odiel. Salinity is the main factor explaining the FDOM variability within the Guadalquivir and Guadiana rivers and in the inner shelf of the GoC. In the outer shelf of the GoC, plankton-produced DOM could explain the persistent spatial pattern of FDOM, playing an important role in the dynamics of FDOM from the North area of the GoC through the persistent low-salinity Eastern North Atlantic Central Water. The oceanographic dynamics and the spatial pattern of FDOM concentration in the continental shelf of the GoC suggest a net transport of FDOM through the GCC (Gulf of Cadiz Current) to the Mediterranean Sea. The Gulf of Cádiz represents an area of extensive seepage of the south-western Iberian Peninsula that is located between two continents and basins, where a high geomorphologic, sedimentary and environmental complexity occurs. In the present study, epibenthic communities were investigated in a mud volcano field containing four mud volcanoes (Gazul, Anastasya, Pipoca and Tarsis), one diapir/mud volcano complex (Chica) and several diapirs that are all located in the upper and middle slope of the Spanish margin of the Gulf of Cádiz (300–700 m depth). Faunistic samples were collected in 2010 and 2011 using a beam-trawl in different sectors of the mud volcano field, including fluid venting submarine structures and their adjacent seabeds. Environmental variables from the sediment and water column as well as the commercial bottom trawling activity were also measured in the same sampled areas for studying relationships with the fauna. A total of 325 taxa were found in the samples, including sponges, molluscs, cnidarians and decapods the most diverse groups. The epibenthic communities displayed differences between sectors that were related to depth, sediment features, characteristics of the water masses and the trawling activity. Six different assemblages were found including deep-sea sponge aggregations and cold-water coral banks in Gazul, echinoid and solitary coral aggregations in Gazul, sea-pen communities that were sometimes intermixed with sponge and gorgonian aggregations in Tarsis, Chica and Pipoca, and low density sea-pen communities with components of chemosynthesis-based communities in Anastasya. Species richness was higher in Gazul, Pipoca and Chica due to the presence of complex habitats (e.g. cold-water coral banks, sponge aggregations) and low in Anastasya due to the scarce epifauna, high trawling activity and low near-bottom current speed. Typical cold seep chemosymbiotic bivalves of the Gulf of Cádiz were not detected in beam-trawl samples due to their infaunal habit. The studied mud volcano field was declared a Site of Community Importance due to the presence of habitats and species with a conservation status, but several commercial species are exploited by bottom trawling. Therefore, a sustainable management of this mud volcano field is still needed according to current EU directives for combining fisheries and habitat conservation (Habitats Directive of the European Union, Directive 1992/43/EEC; Marine Strategy Framework, Directive 2008/56/EC). • A high number of taxa was detected in the mud volcano field of the northern Gulf of Cádiz. • Six epibenthic assemblages occur in different sectors and zones with different Mediterranean Outflow Water influence. • Epibenthic communities displayed relationships with depth, sediment features, water masses characteristics and trawling. • The presence of several vulnerable habitats (e.g. cold-water coral banks), may imply trawling restrictions in some sectors. The pathways and transformations of dense water overflows, which depend on small-scale interactions between flow dynamics and erosional-depositional processes, are a central piece in the ocean's large-scale circulation. A novel, high-resolution current and hydrographic data set highlights the intricate pathway travelled by the saline Mediterranean Overflow as it enters the Atlantic. Interaction with the topography constraints its spreading. Over the initial 200 km west of the Gibraltar gateway, distinct channels separate the initial gravity current into several plunging branches depth-sorted by density. Shallow branches follow the upper slope and eventually detach as buoyant plumes. Deeper branches occupy mid slope channels and coalesce upon reaching a diapiric ridge. A still deeper branch, guided by a lower channel wall marked by transverse furrows, experiences small-scale overflows which travel downslope to settle at mid-depths. The Mediterranean salt flux into the Atlantic has implications for the buoyancy balance in the North Atlantic. Observations on how this flux enters at different depth levels are key to accurately measuring and understanding the role of Mediterranean Outflow in future climate scenarios.
