The maritime industry is undergoing rapid digital transformation, with Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) at the forefront, introducing unprecedented cybersecurity challenges. This study investigates the unique characteristics and cybersecurity requirements of MASS, presenting a tailored approach to address these vulnerabilities effectively. To validate the proposed solution, a testbed environment replicating real-world shipboard networks was developed, incorporating eight attack scenarios designed using the MITRE ATT&CK ICS framework. Among these, the most critical scenario was systematically evaluated, demonstrating the solution’s robustness and practical applicability. By bridging the gap between theoretical models and real-world implementations, this research provides a replicable methodology and foundational tools to enhance the cybersecurity of autonomous maritime systems, supporting the safe and reliable adoption of MASS in the global maritime industry.

In this study, we explored the formation of micro-/nanosized porous structures on the surface of a needle composed of STS304 and examined the effect of conventional needles and needles capable of liquid ejection. Aqua regia, composed of HCl and HNO3, was electrochemically etched to form appropriately sized micro-/nanoporous structures. We observed that when dispensing liquids with low surface tension, they do not immediately fall downward but instead spread over the exterior surface of the needle before falling. We found that the extent of spreading on the surface is influenced by an etched porous structure. Furthermore, to analyze the effect of surface tension differences, we dispensed liquids with varying surface tensions using etched needles. Through the analysis, it was confirmed that, despite the low surface tension, the ejected droplet volume and speed could be stably maintained on the etched needle. This indicates that the spreading phenomenon of the liquid on the needle surface just before ejection can be controlled by the micro/nanoporous structure. We anticipate that these characteristics of etched needles could be utilized in industries where precision dispensing of low-surface-tension liquids is essential.

Abstract In recent times, wearable sensors have attracted significant attention in various research fields and industries. The rapid growth of the wearable sensor related research and industry has led to the development of new devices and advanced applications such as bio-integrated devices, wearable health care systems, soft robotics, and electronic skins, among others. Nanocrystals (NCs) are promising building blocks for the design of novel wearable sensors, due to their solution processability and tunable properties. In this paper, an overview of NC synthesis, NC thin film fabrication, and the functionalization of NCs for wearable applications (strain sensors, pressure sensors, and temperature sensors) are provided. The recent development of NC-based strain, pressure, and temperature sensors is reviewed, and a discussion on their strategies and operating principles is presented. Finally, the current limitations of NC-based wearable sensors are discussed, in addition to methods to overcome these limitations.

Additive manufacturing capable of controlling and dynamically modulating structures down to the nanoscopic scale remains challenging. By marrying additive manufacturing with self-assembly, we develop a UV (ultra-violet)-assisted direct ink write approach for on-the-fly modulation of structural color by programming the assembly kinetics through photo-cross-linking. We design a photo-cross-linkable bottlebrush block copolymer solution as a printing ink that exhibits vibrant structural color (i.e., photonic properties) due to the nanoscopic lamellar structures formed post extrusion. By dynamically modulating UV-light irradiance during printing, we can program the color of the printed material to access a broad spectrum of visible light with a single ink while also creating color gradients not previously possible. We unveil the mechanism of this approach using a combination of coarse-grained simulations, rheological measurements, and structural characterizations. Central to the assembly mechanism is the matching of the cross-linking timescale with the assembly timescale, which leads to kinetic trapping of the assembly process that evolves structural color from blue to red driven by solvent evaporation. This strategy of integrating cross-linking chemistry and out-of-equilibrium processing opens an avenue for spatiotemporal control of self-assembled nanostructures during additive manufacturing. Abstract Omniphobic membranes, due to their exceptional properties, have drawn significant attention for overcoming the bottleneck in membrane distillation (MD) technology. This study demonstrates an innovative method for fabricating an omniphobic membrane that is simple and facile compared to other methods such as wet/dry etching and photolithography. The surface morphology of springtails was imitated using electrospraying technique to coat a polyvinylidene fluoride substrate with concave-shaped polystyrene beads that were successfully developed by controlling the electrical traction (voltage) and air resistance (humidity). Then, the lipid coating of springtail surfaces was mimicked by dip-coating the membrane in a low-toxicity short-chain perfluoropolyether lubricant. The concave structure’s tiny air pockets increased membrane hydrophobicity significantly, indicated by the fact that the first round of water bouncing took only 16.3 ms. Finally, in MD treatment of seawater containing 1.0 mM sodium dodecyl sulfate, the optimized omniphobic membrane maintained a stable 99.9% salt rejection rate.

Abstract Joule and photothermal heating offer promising avenues for enhancing oil recovery, desorption, and reusability by reducing the viscosity of highly viscous oils, thereby facilitating their mobility on sorbent surface. This study developed a heatable reduced graphene oxide nanoribbon (r-GONR)-coated polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) oil sorbent to address these viscosity challenges. The application of heating increased oil desorption by approximately 50%, significantly outperforming the conventional PVDF mat. The r-GONR sorbent, leveraging the photothermal effect, demonstrated exceptional reusability, maintaining 40% oil desorption efficiency up to the 10th cycle. Furthermore, its high oil desorption and reusability translated into considerable economic benefits, with a revenue potential of 6.4–29.0 $/m2, alongside significant environmental impact reduction. This study introduces a novel, sustainable approach to oil desorption and reuse, underscoring the practical applications of heatable materials in enhancing oil recovery.

This study investigates the potential of wood ash (WA), a by-product of wood-based energy production, as an eco-friendly alternative for removing fluoride from water. Kinetic analysis revealed that WA enables rapid fluoride removal, reaching equilibrium within 1 h (112.09 ± 3.9 mg/g). Equilibrium analysis demonstrated that WA exhibits a Langmuir maximum capacity of 157.34 mg/g, indicating a high adsorption capacity that ranks within the top 10% of reported adsorbents (34th out of 328). According to thermodynamic analysis, the adsorption process appears to be both endothermic and spontaneous at elevated temperatures. pH dependence studies showed that while the fluoride adsorption capacity of WA peaked under acidic conditions, it remained relatively stable (116.01 ± 0.8 mg/g) over a wide range of pH levels (5 to 11). An optimal dosage of 6.67 g/L achieved a greater than 98% fluoride removal rate. Coexisting anions affected the fluoride adsorption capacity of WA, with the order of influence being PO43− > CO32− >> SO42− > NO3− ≈ Cl−. Mechanistic analyses confirmed the surface precipitation of CaF2 as the primary mechanism responsible for fluoride removal. With a Ca content of over 66 wt.%, WA facilitates enhanced fluoride removal. Overall, this study highlights the efficacy of WA as a sustainable adsorbent for the removal of fluoride from water, contributing to the valorization of WA in wastewater treatment applications.

Abstract Membrane scaling is a barrier to membrane distillation (MD). In this study, 3D-printed carbon nanotube (CNT) spacer was used to investigate its capability for mitigating membrane scaling during MD and to elucidate the scaling mechanism experimentally and theoretically. CNT spacer was tested under temperature-dependent calcium sulfate scaling conditions, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to measure scaling quantitatively. CNT spacer exhibited unique membrane scaling mechanism, where only a 37% reduction (29 Lm−2h−1) in the initial flux was achieved, even above a volume concentration factor (VCF) of 4. On the other hand, the membrane with a polylactic acid (PLA) spacer (controls) entirely lost flux before reaching a VCF of 3.5. Interestingly, bubble formation was observed in CNT spacer, which could be attributed to the enhanced flux and vaporization rate on membrane surface in the presence of rough-surfaced CNT spacer. Bubbly flow along the membrane channel with CNT spacer can potentially reduce surface scaling on membrane during MD. Moreover, due to the surface roughness of CNT spacer, the initial nuclei might be detached more easily from CNT spacer surface than from smooth PLA surface and grow further into larger crystals in the bulk, resulting in reduced dissolved solutes in the solution. This phenomenon was indirectly corroborated by comparing the experimentally measured fluxes and theoretically computed values from our mechanistic model of MD-crystallization developed in this study. Therefore, this study revealed that CNT spacer with rough surfaces can potentially have benefit of mitigating membrane scaling during MD.

Abstract Hydrogels immobilizing nitrifying bacteria with different thicknesses of 0.55 and 1.13 cm (HG-0.55 and HG-1.13, respectively) were produced. It was recognized that the thickness of media is a crucial parameter that affects both the stability and efficiency of wastewater treatment. Batch mode experiments were conducted to quantify specific oxygen uptake rate (SOUR) values at various total ammonium nitrogen (TAN) concentrations and pH levels. In the batch test, HG-0.55 exhibited 2.4 times higher nitrifying activity than HG-1.13, with corresponding SOUR values of 0.00768 and 0.00317 mg-O2/L mL-PVA min, respectively. However, HG-0.55 was more susceptible to free ammonia (FA) toxicity than HG-1.13, resulting in a reduction of 80% and 50% in SOUR values for HG-0.55 and -1.13, respectively, upon increasing the FA concentration from 15.73 to 118.12 mg-FA/L. Continuous mode experiments were conducted to assess the partial nitritation (PN) efficiency in practical applications, where continuous wastewater inflow maintains low FA toxicity through high ammonia-oxidizing rates. With step-wise TAN concentration increases, HG-0.55 experienced a gentler increase in FA concentration compared to HG-1.13. At a nitrogen loading rate of 0.78–0.95 kg-N/m3 day, the FA increase rate for HG-0.55 was 0.0179 kg-FA/m3 day, while that of HG-1.13 was 0.0516 kg-FA/m3 day. In the batch mode, where wastewater is introduced all at once, the high accumulation of FA posed a disadvantage for the FA-susceptible HG-0.55, which made it unsuitable for application. However, in the continuous mode, the thinner HG-0.55, with its larger surface area and high ammonia oxidation activity, proved to be suitable and demonstrated its effectiveness. This study provides valuable insights and a framework for the utilization strategy of immobilized gels in addressing the toxic effects of FA in practical processes.

Membrane distillation (MD) is a process driven by the vapor pressure difference dependent on temperature variation, utilizing a hydrophobic porous membrane. MD operates at low pressure and temperature, exhibiting resilience to osmotic pressure. However, a challenge arises as the membrane performance diminishes due to temperature polarization (TP) occurring on the membrane surface. The vacuum MD process leverages the application of a vacuum to generate a higher vapor pressure difference, enhancing the flux and mitigating TP issues. Nevertheless, membrane fouling leads to decreased performance, causing membrane wetting and reducing the ion removal efficiency. This study investigates membrane fouling phenomena induced by various silica nanoparticle sizes (400, 900, and 1300 nm). The patterns of membrane fouling, as indicated by the flux reduction, vary depending on the particle size. Distinct MD performances are observed with changes in the feed water temperature and flow rate. When examining the membrane fouling mechanism for particles with a porosity resembling actual particulate materials, a fouling form similar to the solid type is noted. Therefore, this study elucidates the impact of particulate matter on membrane fouling under diverse conditions.

Tungsten diselenide (WSe2) is one of the promising transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) for nanoelectronics and optoelectronics. To enhance and tune the electronic performance of TMDs, chemical functionalization via covalent and van der Waals approaches has been suggested. In the present report, the electric and structural transition of WSe2 oxidized by exposure to O3 is investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy. It is demonstrated that the exposure of WSe2/high-ordered pyrolytic graphite sample to O3 induces the formation of molecular adsorbates on the surface, which enables to increase in the density of states near the valence band edge, resulting from electric structural modification of domain boundaries via exposure of atomic O. According to the work function extracted by Kelvin probe force microscopy, monolayer WSe2 with the O3 exposure results in a gradual increase in work function as the exposure to O3. Therefore, the present report demonstrates the potential pathway for the chemical functionalization of TMDs to enhance the electric performance of TMDs devices.

Since the COVID-19 outbreak, the use of disposable plastics has rapidly increased along with the amount of plastic waste. During fragmentation, microplastics and other chemical substances contained in plastics are released. These then enter humans through food which could be problematic considering their hazardous potential. Polystyrene (PS), which is widely used in disposable containers, releases large amounts of microplastics (MPs), but no studies have investigated the release mechanisms of PS-MPs and simultaneously exposed contaminants. Therefore, in this study, the effects of pH (3, 5, 7, and 9), temperature (20, 50, 80, and 100 °C), and exposure time (2, 4, 6, and 8 h) on MPs release were systematically examined. A quantitative/qualitative study of MPs and styrene monomers was performed using microscopy-equipped Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The release of PS-MPs (36 items/container) and simultaneously exposed pollutants (SEP), such as ethylene glycol monooleate (EGM), was highest at pH 9, 100 °C, and 6 h, which was proportional to the test temperature and time. Under the same conditions, 2.58 μg/L of styrene monomer migrated to the liquid food simulants. The fragmentation was proceeded by oxidation/hydrolysis and accelerated by increased temperature and exposure time. The strong positive correlation between PS-MPs and SEPs releases at pH and temperature indicates that PS-MPs and SEPs follow the same release process. However, a strongly negative correlation between PS-MPs and styrene monomers at the exposed time shows that styrene migration does not follow the same release process, but does its partition coefficient.

Although microplastics (MPs) are intrinsically toxic and function as vectors for organic micropollutants, their discharge from wastewater treatment plant effluents and human activity remains unknown owing to the limitations of detection and treatment technologies. It is imperative to quantify MPs from human activities involving the consumption of various plastic products. This study warns that contact lenses can generate MPs and nanoplastics (NPs) after being discharged into aquatic environments. Identification via micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that the fragmented particles (from a few tens to a few hundred micrometres) could not be detected as poly(2-hydroxyl methacrylate), the component of contact lenses, owing to changes in its chemical properties. After the degradation process, the median size of the contact lens particles decreased from 313 to 85 µm. Approximately 300,600 g of contact lens waste is discharged into sewage systems daily in the United States of America (USA), where 45 million people wear contact lenses and throw away one-fifth of them every day. Contact lens waste (1 g) has the potential to release 5653.3–17,773.3 particles of MPs. This implies that the currently reported MP amounts in the environmental matrix exclude significant amounts of MPs and NPs from discharged contact lenses. The identification method should be examined, and a registration of the disposal process should be established.

Air conditioning using a liquid desiccant (LD) is an energy-efficient air purification and cooling system. However, high energy is required to concentrate or regenerate the LD. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of membrane fouling in more detail and determine control strategies for LD concentrating using membrane distillation (MD). Two different LDs—lithium chloride (LiCl) and potassium formate (HCOOK)—were used. Because LDs require high concentrations by nature (i.e., 40 wt% for LiCl and 70 wt% for HCOOK), the concentration was started from half of those concentrations. This resulted in a flux decline with severe membrane fouling during the concentration using MD. Different membrane fouling mechanisms were also observed, depending on the LD type. Three different physical membrane fouling control methods, including water flushing (WF), air backwashing (AB), and membrane spacer (SP), were introduced. Results showed that WF was the most effective. Both AB and SP showed a marginal change to no cleaning; however, an initial flux with SP was about 1.5 times higher than no cleaning. Therefore, WF combined with the SP could maintain a high flux and a low fouling propensity in the treatment of a high-concentration solution using MD.

The wastewater effluents from textile industries contain highly toxic metal complex dyes. For instance, azo dye has received significant attention owing to its toxicity and environmental stability. This study investigated the oxidation and coagulation processes to effectively remove azo dye from wastewater effluents. Potassium ferrate (K2FeO4) was selected as an oxidant because it has a high oxidation potential, is environmentally stable, and does not generate toxic byproducts. Moreover, it has a combination effect of coagulation and oxidation. Its performance was compared with a single oxidation process (using NaOCl) and a single coagulation process (using FeCl3·6H2O). Based on the jar test experiment, the optimized pH was estimated to be 3 and the optimal dosage was 56.4 mg/L for K2FeO4, and it removed nearly 100% of orange II azo dye (OD) and lissamine green B dye (LGB). However, its removal efficiency decreased when the pH increased to 12. In all processes, dye removal was completed in 5 min of the reaction. Overall, OD and LGB were effectively removed by K2FeO4, compared to the NaOCl and FeCl3·6H2O. This indicates that the combination of oxidation and coagulation of K2FeO4 outperformed the single treatment process without toxic byproduct production.

Abstract Biofouling on a membrane leads to significant performance decrease in filtration processes. In this study, an optical coherence tomography (OCT) was used to perform a time-resolved analysis of dynamic biofouling development on a submerged membrane under continuous operation. A real-time change in the biofouling morphology was calculated through the image analysis of OCT scans. Three videos were generated through the acquisition of serial static images. This is the first study that displays the dynamic biofouling formation process as a video. The acquisition of OCT cross-sectional scans of the biofouling allowed to evaluate the time-lapsed evolution for three different time periods (early stage, double layers and long-term). Firstly, at the early filtration stage, membrane coverage and average biofouling layer thickness were found to be linearly correlated with the permeate flux pattern. Secondly, after 3 d of operation, an anomalous morphology was observed, constituted by a double-layered biofouling structure: denser on the bottom and looser on the top. In a long-term operation, the biofouling structure underwent a dynamic evolution over time, resulting in a multi-layered structure. The biofouling formation information was closely associated with filtration performance (i.e. flux) indicating the suitability of OCT as real-time and in-situ biofouling monitoring technique.
