In this work, melt blending and co-extrusion techniques have been investigated as functionalization strategies to realize bilayer biodegradable films suitable for food packaging applications, combining enhanced barrier performance, good heat sealability and ductility. The ductile, heat sealable inner layer was realized by mixing Ecovio, a commercial blend based on polylactide (PLA) and polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) with an amorphous PLA grade; the outer barrier layer, on its side, was realized by blending poly(hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) with a semicrystalline PLA grade. Three different structures were realized changing the relative thicknesses of the two layers, and were characterized for their surface wettability, O2 barrier, heat-sealability and tensile properties. The results highlighted the impact of the bilayer films layout on the functional performance, and pointed out the attractiveness of the developed structures for food packaging applications where barrier to oxygen is critical to reduce oxidative processes.

While multiband superconductivity is the subject of extensive studies, the possibility of multiband charge density waves (CDW) remains elusive. Here, the authors report evidence of gap opening on both inner and outer bands by a CDW state in 2H-NbSe2, suggesting a possible multiband CDW.

In this work, innovative, sustainable, multifunctional surface treatments for tuff protection that combine water-repellency, consolidating function and long-lasting antimicrobial activity were developed and tested. In particular, different water-based formulations were prepared by adding to a commercial polysiloxane treatment a biocide against biodeterioration, or clay nanoparticles to strengthen the tuff or their combination where the biocide was partially loaded into the nanoclay to join protective, consolidant and long-lasting biocide activity. The last formulation showed the best overall performances, since the constituents synergically improve its water-repellency and aggregative effectiveness without changing the color. Moreover, all surface treatments showed promising antimicrobial activity.

Biodegradable polymers and their blends have been advised as an eco-sustainable solution; however, the generation of microplastics (MPs) from their degradation in aquatic environments is still not fully grasped. In this study, we investigated the formation of bio-microplastics (BMPs) and the changes in the physicochemical properties of blown packaging films based on polylactic acid (PLA), polybutylene succinate (PBS) and a PBS/PLA 70/30 wt% blend after degradation in different aquatic media. The tests were carried out in two temperature/light conditions to simulate degradation in either warm water, under sunlight exposure (named Warm and Light—W&L), and cold deep water (named Cold and Dark—C&D). The pH changes in the aqueous environments were evaluated, while the formed BMPs were analyzed for their size and shape alongside with variations in polymer crystallinity, surface and mechanical properties. In W&L conditions, for all the films, the hydrolytic degradation led to the reorganization of the polymer crystalline phases, strong embrittlement and an increase in hydrophilicity. The PBS/PLA 70/30 blend exhibited increased resistance to degradation with respect to the neat PLA and PBS films. In C&D conditions, no microparticles were observed up to 12 weeks of degradation. In the present work, the suitability of Polylactic acid (PLA) / Poly-ß-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) blends for blown film extrusion was evaluated in a broad range of compositions, obtaining films with improved performance for food packaging applications. Blending PHB with PLA enhanced the processability of the systems for the film blowing process than neat PLA. Moreover, even though the polymers were found to be immiscible, the addition of PHB improved the crystallization of PLA, with a consequent increase in the stiffness, barrier properties and light-screening ability of the final developed systems. An increase in the ductility of the films was also achieved with a PHB content up to 30 wt.%. Correlations between the transparency and the crystallinity degree, and between the oxygen permeability and the elastic modulus of the films were also evaluated.

Post-consumer flexible packaging abandoned in seas and rivers represent an important environmental problem: their recovery is still a challenge and the management of the recovered material is equally difficult since, due to their heterogenicity and to their long-time permanence in seas or rivers, these plastics present various issues related to high incompatibility, hygroscopicity and presence of bad smells. All this translates into poor processability and mechanical performance and low organoleptic quality. The aim of this work is to characterize the seas and rivers plastic waste (SRPW) composition and to perform a preliminary investigation on the effectiveness of two different mineral fillers as reinforcing and compatibilizing agents for SRPW, in view of possible second-life applications of this waste. In particular, an organo-modified montmorillonite (Dellite 67G) and a natural sodium zeolite mineral (Zeolite 4A), loaded at 5 wt%, were considered for improving the processability and properties of SRPW blown films. The combined use of a polymeric compatibilizer (polyolefin block copolymer grafted with 0.4 wt% maleic anhydride was also considered, in order both to improve the filler dispersion within the polymer and to compatibilize the main constituents of SRPW. The results demonstrated that the addition of both fillers to SRPW leaves essentially unchanged the thermal stability, but gives interesting improvements mainly in terms of stiffness. The effects are more significant when the nanometric Dellite 67G is added, than for the micrometric Zeolite 4A, especially in compatibilized systems.

This study concerned with the upgrading of a mixed polyolefin material, obtained by the sorting and mechanical recycling of flexible packaging of small size (< 0.125 m2). It is mainly composed of polyethylene and a minor amount of polypropylene, with traces of polar contaminants. These latter are responsible for material’s hygroscopicity, which negatively affects its processability and final performances. In the present work, the recyclate was melt compounded with different amounts of a nanometric natural zeolite by means of a single-screw extruder. The idea was to take advantage of the potential double function of this additive, as desiccant and reinforcement. The neat recyclate and its blends with the nanozeolite were extruded in the form of ribbons that were submitted to tensile mechanical tests. Significant increases of both stiffness and strain at break were observed for the systems Fil-s/nanozeolite compared to the neat recyclate, due to an efficient drying and reinforcement action of the selected nanozeolite, despite the non-optimal dispersion of the nanofiller.

Oxygen absorption measurements in continuous regard active multilayer films with different layouts, all incorporating a PET/Oxygen scavenger (OS) layer, operating as active O2 barrier, inserted between two PET inert layers, acting as passive O2 barrier. The data set is related to “Transport properties of multilayer active PET films with different layers configuration” by Apicella et al. (2018) [1].A set of four multilayer films, with different relative thickness of the active and inert layers, was produced using a laboratory scale co-extrusion cast-film equipment and was analyzed in terms of oxygen scavenging performance. Single layer active and inert layers were also produced for comparison. The results have shown a longer exhaustion time for all the active multilayer films, respect to the active monolayer one. Moreover, at constant thickness of the active layer, the exhaustion time increases by increasing the thickness of the inert layers, whereas, at constant thickness of the inert layers, the residual oxygen concentration decreases by increasing the thickness of the active layer. The data presented in this article are related to the research article entitled “Hygro-thermal and durability properties of a lightweight mortar made with foamed plastic waste aggregates” (Coppola et al., 2018) [1]. This article focuses the attention on thermal conductivity, water vapour permeability and water absorption of a lightweight cementitious mortar containing foamed end-of-waste plastic aggregates, produced via foam extrusion process [2]. Thermal conductivity, water vapour permeability and water absorption data are made available to allow comparison and/or extend the analysis. Experimental investigations showed that the presence of plastic aggregates decreased thermal conductivity, water vapour resistance and capillary water absorption.

Biopolymers are of growing interest, but to improve some of their poor properties and performance, the formulation of bio-based blends and/or adding of nanoparticles is required. For this purpose, in this work, two different metal oxides, namely zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium dioxide (TiO2), at different concentrations (0.5, 1, and 2%wt.) were added in polylactic acid (PLA) and polylactic acid/polyamide 11 (PLA/PA11) blends to establish their effects on solid-state properties, morphology, melt behaviour, and photo-oxidation resistance. It seems that the addition of ZnO in PLA leads to a significant reduction in its rigidity, probably due to an inefficient dispersion in the melt state, while the addition of TiO2 does not penalize PLA rigidity. Interestingly, the addition of both ZnO and TiO2 in the PLA/PA11 blend has a positive effect on the rigidity because of blend morphology refinement and leads to a slight increase in film hydrophobicity. The photo-oxidation resistance of the neat PLA and PLA/PA11 blend is significantly reduced due to the presence of both metal oxides, and this must be considered when designing potential applications. The last results suggest that both metal oxides could be considered photo-sensitive degradant agents for biopolymer and biopolymer blends. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Transport, mechanical and global migration data concern multilayer food packaging films with different layouts, all incorporating a layered silicate/polyamide nanocomposite as oxygen barrier layer, and a low-density polyethylene (LDPE) as moisture resistant layer in direct contact with food. The data are related to “Tuning of co-extrusion processing conditions and film layout to optimize the performances of PA/PE multilayer nanocomposite films for food packaging” by Garofalo et al. (2017) [1]. Nanocomposite multilayer films, with different relative layer thicknesses and clay types, were produced using a laboratory scale co-extrusion blown-film equipment and were analyzed in terms of transport to oxygen and water vapor, mechanical properties and overall migration. The results have shown that all the multilayer hybrid films, based on the copolyamide layer filled with Cloisite 30B, displayed the most significant oxygen barrier improvements and the best mechanical properties compared to the unfilled films. No significant alteration of the overall migration values was observed, as expectable [2–4]. The performance improvement was more relevant in the case of the film with the thinner nanocomposite layer.

The realization of antimicrobial films through the incorporation of active agents into a polymer matrix is a promising alternative to the direct addition of antimicrobials into the food matrix. To this aim, the goal of this work was to develop a sustainable, food packaging solution with antimicrobial effectiveness and high functional performance, based on Ethyl-Nα-dodecanoyl-L-arginate (LAE). Active biodegradable coatings, easy soluble to be removed, were realized by spreading a Polylactic acid/LAE coating solution, at different antimicrobial concentration (from 0 to 20%), on a recyclable Polyethylene-terephthalate substrate. The antimicrobial activity of the multilayer films was tested in vitro against E.Coli CECT 434 strain as pathogenic agent in liquid culture media. Moreover, the LAE chemical interaction with the PLA matrix was investigated, as well as its effect on the adhesion, wetting, optical and barrier properties of the films. The results pointed out that that the minimum LAE concentration incorporated already guarantees an antimicrobial activity comparable to commercial antimicrobial packaging solutions, and that, among the systems investigated, 10% LAE is the minimum concentration guaranteeing total inhibition without significantly altering the functionalities of the developed systems.

Food contact materials (FCMs) can contain Non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) as a result of break down, side product or impurities. NIAS can migrate into food and this might cause a risk for human health. Thus, their presence has to be evaluated, but currently there are no protocols to establish how to perform a risk assessment. Then, in this work, three different strategies to make a NIAS exposure assessment were compared: the European Food Agency Authority (EFSA) food consumption database, the Matrix Tool and the FACET tool. 2,4-Di-tert-butylphenol (2,4-DTB), an identified and quantified NIAS, was used as the case study. Differences between these tools were highlighted, but for all the strategies tested the estimated exposure to 2,4-DTB was lower than its threshold value indicating that there are no risk for the consumers.

Currently, plastic packaging represents a global challenge and has become a key point of attention for governments, media and consumers due to the visibility of the waste it generates. Despite their high resource efficiency, the perceived non-recyclability of polymeric films risks precluding them from being a relevant packaging solution in a circular economy approach. In this regard, the aim of this study was to implement a strategy to try closing the loop, via the mechanical recycling of post-consumer flexible packaging of small size (denoted as Fil-s) to obtain new films. In particular, two lots of Fil-s were used, which are PE/PP blends differing for the PP content and the presence of polar contaminants. The suitability for film blowing extrusion of these recycled materials, as such and after the addition of a compatibilizer and/or a lamellar nanosilicate, was evaluated. It was first evidenced that the difficulty of producing blown films with the pristine recycled materials, due to the frequent bubble breakages, occurring even at low draw ratios. Moreover, the shear and extensional rheological behavior of all Fil-s based systems was usefully correlated with their processability features, evidencing the key roles of the nanofiller to stabilize the bubble and of the compatibilizer to ensure a uniform film deformation, avoiding its premature breakage. Even if the adopted upgrading strategies allowed the production of blown films with both types of Fil-s, the different components of the recycled matrices were proven to significantly affect their processability and final film performances.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) exhibits outstanding gas-barrier properties, which favor its use as a biodegradable, high-barrier coating on food-packaging films, possibly in combination with modified atmospheres. Nonetheless, its high sensitivity to water can result in a severe loss of barrier properties, significantly limiting its applications with fresh foods and in high-humidity conditions. In this work, the water vapor (PWV) and oxygen permeability (PO2) of high-barrier biodegradable films with PVOH/PLA + wax double coatings were extensively characterized in a wide range of relative humidity (from 30 to 90%), aimed at understanding the extent of the interaction of water with the wax and the polymer matrices and the impact of this on the permeation process. What is more, a mathematical model was applied to the PWV data set in order to assess its potential to predict the permeability of the multilayer films by varying storage/working relative humidity (RH) conditions. The carbon dioxide permeability (PCO2) of the films was further evaluated, and the corresponding permselectivity values were calculated. The study was finally augmented through modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) tests, which were carried out on double-coated films loaded with 0 and 5% wax, and UV-Vis analyses. The results pointed out the efficacy of the PLA + wax coating layer in hampering the permeation of water molecules, thus reducing PVOH swelling, as well as the UV-shielding ability of the multilayer structures. Moreover, the MAP tests underlined the suitability of the double-coated films for being used as a sustainable alternative for the preservation of foods under modified atmospheres. Microplastics (MPs) pollution has emerged as one of the world's most serious environmental issues, with harmful consequences for ecosystems and human health. One proposed solution to their accumulation in the environment is the replacement of nondegradable plastics with biodegradable ones. However, due to the lack of true biodegradability in some ecosystems, they also give rise to biodegradable microplastics (BioMPs) that negatively impact different ecosystems and living organisms. This review summarizes the current literature on the impact of BioMPs on some organisms—higher plants and fish—relevant to the food chain. Concerning the higher plants, the adverse effects of BioMPs on seed germination, plant biomass growth, penetration of nutrients through roots, oxidative stress, and changes in soil properties, all leading to reduced agricultural yield, have been critically discussed. Concerning fish, it emerged that BioMPs are more likely to be ingested than nonbiodegradable ones and accumulate in the animal's body, leading to impaired skeletal development, oxidative stress, and behavioral changes. Therefore, based on the reviewed pioneering literature, biodegradable plastics seem to be a new threat to environmental health rather than an effective solution to counteract MP pollution, even if serious knowledge gaps in this field highlight the need for additional rigorous investigations to understand the potential risks associated to BioMPs. The charge density wave (CDW) in solids is a collective ground state combining lattice distortions and charge ordering. It is defined by a complex order parameter with an amplitude and a phase. The amplitude and wavelength of the charge modulation are readily accessible to experiment. However, accurate measurements of the corresponding phase are significantly more challenging. Here we combine reciprocal and real space information to map the full complex order parameter based on topographic scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images. Our technique overcomes limitations of Fourier space based techniques to achieve distinct amplitude and phase images with high spatial resolution. Applying this analysis to transition metal dichalcogenides provides striking evidence that their CDWs consist of three individual unidirectional charge modulations whose ordering vectors are connected by the fundamental rotational symmetry of the crystalline lattice. Spatial variations in the relative phases of these three modulations account for the different CDW contrasts often observed in STM topographic images. Phase images further reveal topological defects and discommensurations, a singularity predicted by theory for a nearly commensurate CDW. Such precise real space mapping of the complex order parameter provides a powerful tool for a deeper understanding of the CDW ground state whose formation mechanisms remain largely unclear.

Aim: The aim was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the "cross-cylinder" technique in the correction of astigmatism. Setting and Design: A prospective interventional study from a university eye department was conducted. Material and Methods: The photoastigmatic refractive keratectomy (PARK) using the "cross-cylinder" technique was performed in 102 eyes of 84 patients with at least 0.75 D of astigmatism. The study population was divided into two groups: in the first group the preoperative astigmatic power ranged from −0.75 D to −3.00 D (group 1), in the second group it ranged from −3.25 D to −6.00 D (group 2). Group 1 included 82 eyes of 67 patients (29 males and 38 females) with a mean cylinder power of −1.90 ± 0.63 D, group 2 included 20 eyes of 17 patients (13 males and 4 females) with a mean cylinder power of -4.28 ± 0.76 D. All eyes were targeted for emmetropia. The results were evaluated using Calossi′s vector analysis method. Six-month postoperative outcomes are presented. Results: Six months after PARK the mean sphere for the entire cohort was +0.28 ± 0.75 D (range +2.5 to −2 D), the mean cylindrical power was +0.33 ± 0.51 D (range +2.5 to −1.25 D) and the mean spherical equivalent refraction was +0.73 ± 0.81 D (range +1.75 to −2 D). Conclusions: The cross-cylinder technique may be safely used with predictable results for the correction of astigmatism.

The surface diffusion potential landscape plays an essential role in a number of physical and chemical processes such as self-assembly and catalysis. Diffusion energy barriers can be calculated theoretically for simple systems, but there is currently no experimental technique to systematically measure them on the relevant atomic length scale. Here, we introduce an atomic force microscopy based method to semiquantitatively map the surface diffusion potential on an atomic length scale. In this proof of concept experiment, we show that the atomic force microscope damping signal at constant frequency-shift can be linked to nonconservative processes associated with the lowering of energy barriers and compared with calculated single-atom diffusion energy barriers. The goal of this work was to investigate the morphological and chemical–physical changes induced by adding ZnO nanoparticles to bio-based polymeric materials based on polylactic acid (PLA) and polyamide 11 (PA11). Precisely, the photo- and water-degradation phenomena of nanocomposite materials were monitored. For this purpose, the formulation and characterization of novel bio-nanocomposite blends based on PLA and PA11 at a ratio of 70/30 wt.% filled with zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures at different percentages were performed. The effect of ZnO nanoparticles (≤2 wt.%) within the blends was thoroughly explored by employing thermogravimetry (TGA), size exclusion chromatography (SEC), matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization–time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM). Adding up to 1% wt. of ZnO resulted in a higher thermal stability of the PA11/PLA blends, with a decrement lower than 8% in terms of molar masses (MMs) values being obtained during blend processing at 200 °C. ZnO promoted trans-ester-amide reactions between the two polymers, leading to the formation of PLA/PA11 copolymers. These species could work as compatibilisers at the polymer interface, improving thermal and mechanical properties. However, the addition of higher quantities of ZnO affected such properties, influencing the photo-oxidative behaviour and thus thwarting the material's application for packaging use. The PLA and blend formulations were subjected to natural aging in seawater for two weeks under natural light exposure. The 0.5% wt. ZnO sample induced polymer degradation with a decrease of 34% in the MMs compared to the neat samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Strain is attracting much interest as a mean to tune the properties of thin exfoliated two-dimensional materials and their heterostructures. Numerous devices to apply tunable uniaxial strain are proposed in the literature, but only few for biaxial strain, often with a trade-off between maximum strain and uniformity, reversibility, and device size. We present a compact device that allows for the controlled application of uniform in-plane biaxial strain, with maximum deformation and uniformity comparable to those found in much larger devices. Its performance and strain uniformity over the sample area are modeled using finite element analysis and demonstrated by measuring the response of exfoliated 2H–MoS2 to strain by Raman spectroscopy.
