ABSTRACT Erectile dysfunction is observed in about 50% of men. It has been found that diabetes mellitus increases its prevalence to 19-86.3%, necessitating attention to a therapeutic strategy. Among the available treatment methods, intracavernosal injections of mesenchymal stem cells have proven to be particularly effective. Objective The purpose of study is to assess and analyse the effectiveness of their use in the treatment of erectile dysfunction in patients with diabetes mellitus. Materials and Methods The literature search was conducted using systematic methods and analysis in databases such as Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, Elsevier, and Springer, with 41 sources included for further review. Results The study highlights microangiopathic and neuropathic links as key factors in erectile dysfunction development in diabetic patients, stemming from endothelial dysfunction and conductivity disturbances. Mesenchymal stem cell therapy from bone marrow, adipose tissue, and umbilical cord mitigates pathogenic impact through regenerative and anti-apoptotic effects. Due to this, most studies indicate high efficacy of the treatment and rapid therapeutic action through intracavernosal administration. Some studies suggest an increase in the body’s receptor sensitivity to other drugs, such as sildenafil. Conclusion From the perspective of further research on this issue, standardising the preparation of stem cells and the treatment method using a large sample size is essential to introduce such a method as an extremely promising therapy for this delicate issue in men into practical medicine. The practical value of the study lies in the systematisation of information on different sources of mesenchymal stem cells for treating erectile dysfunction.

Genito-Pelvic Pain/Penetration Disorder is a common sexual disorder that affects an individual's sexual health and overall well-being. Education is a therapeutic resource that presents several advantages, and it can potentially generate improvements both in pain and sexual functioning-related outcomes in patients suffering from this affliction. The objective of this study was to assess if a therapeutic educational program produced improvements in the different domains of the Female Sexual Function Index in participants suffering from Genito-Pelvic Pain Penetration Disorder. Participants were randomized into a group that received a face-to-face therapeutic educational program, a group that received the same program but online, or a control group. The Female Sexual Function Index was assessed, and analysis of the change in the domains for every group was performed using multiple t-tests. Improvements were found in the face-to-face intervention group, but only the "Pain" domain showed significant improvements (−1.1 points, p < 0.05). Improvements were also found in the online group, but they were only significant in the "Pain" and "Satisfaction" domains (−0.8 points, p < 0.05 for both). A therapeutic educational program improves pain-related outcomes, and it shows a positive tendency to also improve sexual functioning-related outcomes in patients suffering from Genito-Pelvic Pain/Penetration Disorder. Objectives: To identify factors associated with female sexual dysfunction (FSD) among Hong Kong Chinese women in a gynaecology outpatient clinic. Methods: Chinese women aged 18 to 65 years who had been sexually active in the past 4 weeks before recruitment and attended the gynaecology clinic of Kwong Wah Hospital between October 2020 and July 2021 were invited to participate in a sexual health survey. Participant demographics were collected through the clinical management system. Sexual function in the previous 4 weeks was assessed using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). Results: 206 women (mean age, 43.6 years) were included in the analysis. The mean total FSFI score was 23.44; 42% of participants were at risk of FSD, with a total FSFI score of =23.45. The score was lowest in the sexual desire domain (2.88) and highest in the coital pain domain (4.51). Participants were divided into three age groups based on their reproductive age status: 18 to 35 years (n=44), 36 to 50 years (n=116), and 51 to 65 years (n=46). Although older age groups tended to have higher risks of FSD, the differences between groups were not significant. Specifically, only the satisfaction domain score was lower in the age group of 36 to 50 years than in the age group of 18 to 35 years (4.16 vs 4.61, p=0.01). The coital pain domain score was lower in menopausal women than in premenopausal women (3.76 vs 4.51, p=0.03). Parous women had a lower sexual desire domain score (2.78 vs 3.04, p=0.04) and higher vaginal lubrication domain score (4.42 vs 3.74, p=0.02) than nulliparous women. Women using contraception had a higher vaginal lubrication domain score than women not using contraception (4.47 vs 3.91, p=0.02). Women with distress related to sexual function had a lower total FSFI score (19.74 vs 23.78, p=0.01), lower satisfaction domain score (3.80 vs 4.42, p=0.02), and lower coital pain domain score (3.38 vs 4.51, p=0.01), compared with women without distress related to sexual function. Conclusion: Although older women tend to be at higher risk of FSD, the correlation between age and FSFI score was not significant. Objective: Menopause can impact women's physical and mental well-being, including sexual function. The present study aims to evaluate the effect of sexual counseling based on the PLISSIT model on improving the sexual function of postmenopausal women., Methods: The randomized trial focused on postmenopausal married women who did not have any pre-existing health conditions. The intervention group were provided with personalized sexual counseling grounded in the PLISSIT model, whereas the control group were given educational pamphlets. Participants filled out the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) questionnaire and were categorized into two groups through randomized blocking, utilizing blocks of four and six. The main outcome measure was the average sexual function score assessed at the start of the study, as well as at 4 and 8 weeks following the intervention., Results: A total of 60 eligible participants were included in the study. The mean ± standard deviation participant age was 58.7 ± 3.5 years. At week 4 following the intervention, statistically significant differences were observed between the study groups in the mean scores of sexual desire ( p  = 0.023), arousal ( p  = 0.002), orgasm ( p  = 0.0001), lubrication ( p  = 0.001) and satisfaction ( p  = 0.004). At week 8 following the intervention, significant differences were noted in the mean scores for sexual arousal ( p  = 0.001), orgasm ( p  = 0.000), lubrication ( p  = 0.031) and satisfaction ( p  = 0.004) between the study groups., Conclusion: The sexual counseling based on the PLISSIT model can significantly improve sexual function in postmenopausal women, making it a valuable intervention for healthcare providers to consider in their practice.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate from the perspective of palliative care (PC) patients with cancer, the frequency of sexual dysfunction (SD) and their views regarding the communication with their physicians. Design, Setting, and Participants: Adult PC patients with cancer seen at a Supportive Care Clinic in the United States were invited to participate in a survey about SD. Results: A total of 100 patients completed the survey. Only 29% would like to discuss SD with a clinician, even though 81% experienced it in the previous year, and 55% were dissatisfied with their sexual function. Only 20% reported that their clinician ever asked them about SD. Most (79%) considered appropriate to be inquired about SD, but only 32% thought it should always be asked. Conclusions: Our findings do not support the notion that PC specialists should always initiate a discussion about SD with their PC patients with cancer.

Purpose: Twenty five years have passed since the first national survey on erectile dysfunction (ED) in Japan. The Japanese Society for Sexual Medicine conducted a nationwide survey on the actual status of sexual function targeting men over 20 years old in Japan using validated questionnaires commonly used in clinical practice., Materials and Methods: Japanese men aged 20 to 79 years participated in our online epidemiological study on sexual dysfunction. Erectile status was assessed by direct questioning and specific questionnaires. Risk factors and frequencies of sexual intercourse, masturbation, nocturnal erections, and feeling sexual desire were assessed. The prevalence of these risk factors was compared between men with and without ED. Prevalence and frequencies were calculated for each 5-year age group. Main outcomes were the prevalence and number of patients with ED and simultaneous evaluation of age-related variations., Results: Direct questioning of the men revealed that 13.0% felt troubled by ED. Although 81.0% of them had at least some ED symptoms based on a Sexual Health Inventory For Men score of ≤21, the prevalence of men with ED by Erection Hardness Score (EHS), the most appropriate questionnaire for Japanese with low sexual activity, was 30.9%, indicating that 14,012,596 men have ED. Most risk factors were related with ED, whereas frequencies of sexual intercourse, masturbation, nocturnal erections, and feeling sexual desire were affected by aging. However, the low frequency of these factors in the young generation was surprising., Conclusions: The EHS-based assessment revealed a prevalence of ED of 30.9%, which affected approximately 14 million men, and that the sexual desire, erection stiffness, orgasms, and satisfaction were lower than expected in young Japanese men, especially those aged 20 to 24 years, although those factors tended to worsen with aging. Objective To analyze the possible molecular mechanism of Chaihu Shugan San in the treatment of psychogenic erectile dysfunction (pED) caused by liver stagnation and qi stagnation using the network pharmacology and experimental validation. Methods The main components, targets, and pathways of Chaihu Shugan San in the treatment of pED were screened by network pharmacology. Eight patients with pED caused by liver stagnation and qi stagnation, who met the inclusion criteria were randomly divided into two groups including the Chaihu Shugan San group and the placebo group, 4 cases each group, and the differences in serum proteomics between the two groups were observed before and after treatment. Results The results of network pharmacology and proteomics analysis suggested that the therapeutic targets of Chaihu Shugan San in the treatment of pED caused by liver stagnation and qi stagnation were serine-threonine-protein kinase 1 (AKTl), interleukin 6 (IL-6), mitogen-activated protein kinase 3 (MAPK3), tumor necrosis factor (TNF), vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEG FA), and nitric oxide synthase type III (NOS3), etc. The GO enrichment analysis and KEGG pathway analysis revealed that HIF-1 signaling pathway, prostate cancer signaling pathway, p53 signaling pathway, etc. might participate in this pathological process. Conclusion Chaihu Shugan San can play a role in the treatment of pED caused by liver stagnation and qi stagnation through multiple components, multiple targets and pathways. The active ingredients such as quercetin, isorhamnetin, naringenin and Chuan Chenpi act on AKTl, IL6, MAPK3, TNF, VEGF A, NOS3 and other targets, then affects the HIF-1 signaling pathway, prostate cancer signaling pathway, p53 signaling pathway and other signaling pathways to produce cell proliferation and apoptosis, inflammatory response and redox, all which lay the basis for further elucidation of its mechanism of action. Objective: Perimenopause is the period from the early menopausal transition to 12 months after the final menstrual period. The clustering of menopausal symptoms poses a challenge for perimenopausal management. Core symptoms are targets for interventions that can alleviate other related symptoms. Bridge symptoms are connectors that link related symptom clusters and can improve the effectiveness of interventions. This study aims to construct a network structure of menopausal symptoms and to identify core and bridge symptoms as a reference for future management., Methods: Two hundred forty-two Chinese perimenopausal women were included in the survey. The structure and associations of the menopausal symptoms assessed by the Greene Climacteric Scale were analyzed using a network analysis. We generated the network structure graph using R software and checked its accuracy and stability., Results: In the menopausal transition, the most prevalent symptoms were feeling tired or lacking in energy, excitability, and irritability. Sexual dysfunction was common among early postmenopausal women. Irritability (S = 7.16, C = 0.0167, B = 8) was a core symptom of the network. The depressive symptom cluster was a core symptom cluster, most of which have high centrality indices. Inflammatory rheumatic diseases (IRDs) refer to a range of persistent disorders that have a major influence on several physiological systems. Although there is much evidence connecting IRDs to sexual dysfunction and fertility problems, research specifically focusing on male infertility in relation to these diseases is sparse. This review addresses the complicated connection between IRDs and male infertility, emphasising the physiological, psychological, and pharmacological aspects that influence reproductive health outcomes in men with rheumatic conditions. We explore the effects of IRDs and their treatments on many facets of male reproductive well-being, encompassing sexual functionality, semen characteristics, and hormonal balance. Additionally, we present a comprehensive analysis of the present knowledge on the impact of several categories of anti-rheumatic drugs on male reproductive function. Although there is an increasing awareness of the need of addressing reproductive concerns in individuals IRDs, there is a noticeable lack of research especially dedicated to male infertility. Moving forward, more comprehensive research is needed to determine the prevalence, risk factors, and mechanisms driving reproductive difficulties in males with IRDs. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to evaluate female sexual function among young undergraduate women. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional survey conducted among Brazilian undergraduate students. METHODS: This study used online questionnaires to assess sociodemographic and health-related data and used the Brazilian version of the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) among female undergraduate students aged 18 to 25 years who were regularly enrolled in undergraduate healthcare courses. The FSFI is composed of 19 items that measure female sexual function over the last four weeks, in six domains: desire and subjective stimulation, sexual arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction and pain or discomfort. RESULTS: Among the 149 female undergraduate students evaluated, 43 (28.8%) presented sexual dysfunction (score < 26.55). Health conditions were not associated with female sexual dysfunction. Among the women with sexual dysfunction, all domains of the sexual response cycle were affected (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Sexual dysfunction was identified in at least a quarter of these young undergraduate women and it was not associated with gynecological problems, menstrual cycles, dysmenorrhea, contraceptive use or physical activity.

Abstract: Background: Androgenetic alopecia is a common dermatological condition affecting both genders. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the prevalence of female sexual dysfunction in Slovenia. We aimed to explore the prevalence itself, comparison among demographic groups and potential correlations. Data were collected based on the validated standardized Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) (N=605). Most participants had sexual intercourse with one partner (n=523), and the majority of sexual relationships were heterosexual (n=584). University educated subjects had the highest claims of arousal, followed by those with master/doctoral degrees and college educated ones. The lowest level was expressed by subjects with elementary school. The youngest subjects (18-23 years) expressed the highest levels of desire and arousal, followed by the 24-29 age group. The 42-47 age group reported higher levels of lubrication and orgasm. The claim of satisfaction was highest in the 24-29 age group, while the pain was highest in the 42-47 age group. Introduction: Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) consists of low libido, sexual arousal problems, anorgasmia, and dyspareunia. Sexual function is an important aspect of life for many women and is closely correlated with overall well-being. FSD is often underrepresented in the academic space when compared with male sexual disorders, such as erectile dysfunction. As FSD spans many fields (eg, urology, gynecology, psychology), bibliometric analyses are an important resource to highlight landmark articles., Objectives: To identify key articles about FSD by citation number and bibliometric analysis to facilitate future scholarly efforts into more FSD research., Methods: We searched for articles in the Web of Science Core Collection between 1900 and 2023 using terms specific to FSD. We identified relevant FSD articles and selected the top 50 most cited. A bibliometric analysis was performed to collect and analyze data about title, authorship, publication year, citation number, journal and impact factor, country and institution, study type, citation index, specialty, and conflict of interest., Results: An overall 6858 results were identified. The top 50 most cited articles were published between 1997 and 2014 in 12 countries, across 32 institutions, and in 20 journals. The United States produced the most articles. The Journal of Sexual Medicine published the most articles. The mean number of citations per article was 351.64. Observational studies were most common. More than half were sponsored. Of all the specialties, most articles were categorized as urology and nephrology. Research about FSD has been much less impactful than research about male sexual dysfunction, possibly owing to stigma and decreased clinical training., Conclusion: As FSD covers many fields, bibliometric analyses are invaluable to understand the vast body of knowledge. Hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in men, characterized by chronically low sexual desire, is associated with poor sexual well-being, such as lower sexual satisfaction and higher sexual distress. Additionally, despite their low desire, men with HSDD often report wanting sexual intimacy and validation within their sexual lives/relationships. Studies that apply self-determination theory to sexual relationships demonstrate that adopting more autonomous (e.g., engaging in sex for its inherent pleasure) and less controlled (e.g., engaging in sex for some external reward or consequence) motives for engaging in sex is associated with greater sexual well-being for both members of the couple. Given that autonomous motivation in relationships is associated with intimacy and sexual satisfaction, and lower sexual distress, having sex for autonomous reasons may allow men with HSDD and their partners to feel more sexually intimate despite their lower sexual desire, whereas having sex for controlled reasons may hinder sexual intimacy and satisfaction and augment sexual distress. In this dyadic cross-sectional study, we examined the associations between types of sexual motivation and sexual intimacy, sexual satisfaction, and sexual distress for men with HSDD and their partners (n = 64 couples). Men with HSDD who reported having sex for more autonomous reasons reported more sexual satisfaction and both partners reported more sexual intimacy. Men with HSDD who had sex for more controlled reasons had partners who felt less sexual intimacy and satisfaction, and both partners were more sexually distressed. Promoting autonomous sexual motivation and decreasing controlled motivation may help couples navigating HSDD to feel closer in their relationship, more sexually satisfied, and less sexually distressed., (© 2023. The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of core muscles in female sexual dysfunction (FSD) and develop comprehensive rehabilitation programs to address this issue. We aim to answer the following research questions: what are the roles of core muscles in FSD, and how can machine and deep learning models accurately predict changes in core muscles during FSD? FSD is a common condition that affects women of all ages, characterized by symptoms such as decreased libido, difficulty achieving orgasm, and pain during intercourse. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of changes in core muscles during FSD using machine and deep learning. We evaluated the performance of multiple models, including multi-layer perceptron (MLP), long short-term memory (LSTM), convolutional neural network (CNN), recurrent neural network (RNN), ElasticNetCV, random forest regressor, SVR, and Bagging regressor. The models were evaluated based on mean squared error (MSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and R-squared (R 2 ) score. Our results show that CNN and random forest regressor are the most accurate models for predicting changes in core muscles during FSD. CNN achieved the lowest MSE (0.002) and the highest R 2 score (0.988), while random forest regressor also performed well with an MSE of 0.0021 and an R 2 score of 0.9905. Our study demonstrates that machine and deep learning models can accurately predict changes in core muscles during FSD. The neglected core muscles play a significant role in FSD, highlighting the need for comprehensive rehabilitation programs that address these muscles. Sexual dysfunction is associated with psychological symptoms, including depression and anxiety. Sexual dysfunctions are often attributed to dissociation symptoms in individuals who reported sexual trauma histories. This study utilized a network approach to analyze relationships between sexual and psychological symptoms and examine whether the identified network structures differed between individuals who reported a history of sexual trauma and those who did not. Sexual dysfunction, history of sexual trauma, internalizing symptoms, dissociation symptoms, sex-related shame, and negative body image were assessed in 1,937 United States college students (women = 69.5%). Nearly half (46.8%) of the participants reported a sexual trauma history in their lifetime. Using regularized partial correlation networks, the relationships between sexual and psychological symptoms were analyzed and compared between groups with and without trauma histories. Internalizing symptoms were positively correlated with sexual dysfunction regardless of the presence of sexual trauma history. Anxiety had a stronger influence in the trauma network than in the no-trauma network. Feeling separated from the body during sexual activity was a central symptom and was related to difficulties relaxing and enjoying sex only in the trauma network. Sex-related shame appeared to play a more important role in men compared to women. To improve clinical practice of assessing and treating sexual dysfunction, researchers and clinicians should consider core symptoms that connect different aspects of sexual and psychological functioning while being aware of the unique role of dissociation in the context of traumatic stress.

Abstract BACKGROUND: Psoriasis may significantly impair sexual function. Depression and organic factors appear to play a key role in this relation. However, beyond genital psoriasis, the importance of the disease's distribution patterns has not been considered. OBJECTIVES: To research sexual function in psoriasis patients and investigate the roles of anxiety, depression and psoriasis' distribution patterns in sexual dysfunction. METHODS: A comparative study matched for sex and age was performed. Eighty patients with moderate to severe psoriasis and 80 healthy controls were included. Despite more than a century of research on sexual dysfunction, there has been limited attention to ethical concerns. This is problematic because sex research involves complex ethical questions that generate confusion for ethics review and have not been addressed by ethical guidelines. We analyze two questions. First, does sexual content raise the risk profile of a research protocol? We argue that there is nothing inherent in sexual content that makes a study high risk and that many sexual dysfunction studies involve no more than minimal risk. Second, we ask whether research interventions that involve seeing participants undressed or having physical contact with a research subject are permissible? We argue that these interventions raise an important ethical challenge-they often involve sexual dysfunction researchers engaging in interventions that would not be conducted in their standard practice. Background: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a rheumatic disorder that has been observed to affect self-perception of sexuality., Aim: The study aims to assess sexual dysfunction (SD), establish possible associations with SD levels, and evaluate the impact of physical activity (PA) levels on SD in Spanish women with FMS as compared with healthy control women., Methods: The study was cross-sectional. A total of 170 women voluntarily agreed to participate between September 2019 and February 2020: 88 in the FMS group and 82 in the control group., Outcomes: The main outcome measures were SD, as assessed through the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), and PA levels, as assessed with a structured interview., Results: There were significant differences in every domain and total SD score between the FMS and control groups (P < .05). In addition, we obtained a moderate significant direct association (χ2[1] = 37.071, P < .05, phi = 0.467) when exploring the associations between FMS and risk of SD. Results showed statistically significant differences between the FMS group and the control group when PA levels were not reached in the desire, pain, and total scores of the FSFI (P < .05). When the PA levels were reached, between-group differences were found in all domains, as well as in the total score of the FSFI (P < .05)., Clinical Implications: Sexual function should be evaluated in women with FMS, while future treatments should address this clinical area with the aim of managing SD in this population., Strengths and Limitations: The main limitation is that the outcome measures were self-reported., Conclusion: We found a high prevalence of SD in Spanish women with FMS, with an impact on aspects such as desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, and pain during sexual intercourse. Background: Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) is a common problem in the United States; however, only 14% to 40% of women are screened by their health care clinicians. There are few data on how differences in clinician type affects screening rates., Aim: This study aimed to assess differences in FSD screening rates among gynecology clinician types, identify factors associated with screening, and compare screening rates of FSD against conditions with established screening recommendations., Methods: Data were collected by retrospective chart review of annual visits at an urban tertiary care center. Screening rates for FSD, depression, cervical cancer, and breast cancer were calculated and compared. Multivariable logistic regression modeling was utilized to assess the correlation between various patient characteristics and FSD screening rates., Outcomes: Study outcome measures included percentages of women who were screened for FSD, depression, cervical cancer, and breast cancer., Results: FSD screening rate was significantly higher among resident-level clinicians vs nonresident clinicians (59% vs 31%; P < .001). When the nonresident clinicians were subanalyzed, certified nursing midwives were the second most likely to screen for FSD (odds ratio [OR], 0.41), followed by nurse practitioners (OR, 0.29) and attending physicians (OR, 0.22). According to multivariable logistic regression techniques, 5 factors were associated with an increased likelihood of a patient being screened for FSD at an annual examination: patient seen by a resident physician rather than an attending physician, patient history of FSD, patient age ≥40 years, patient report of being sexually active at the time of visit, and patient history of cervical procedures., Clinical Implications: There is an opportunity to improve FSD screening rates by clinicians. Future research may assess what factors, such as increased sexual function education or greater incentives to document FSD screening, may result in higher screening rates. From this, targeted and effective interventions might be crafted to improve future screening rates., Strengths and Limitations: This study is one of the first to compare FSD screening rates among clinician types in the same specialty. Study limitations include the inherent limitations of a retrospective design, including selection biases., Conclusion: Residents were more likely to screen for FSD at annual well-woman visits than attending clinicians, nurse practitioners, and certified nurse midwives. OBJETIVO: traduzir e adaptar culturalmente o Short Personal Experiences Questionnaire (SPEQ) para a língua portuguesa, no Brasil, em mulheres climatéricas. MÉTODOS: a versão original do questionário, em inglês, proveniente da Universidade de Melbourne (Austrália), inicialmente foi traduzida para a língua portuguesa e retraduzida ao inglês. Procedeu-se, então, à adaptação sociocultural do vocabulário e da construção linguística para melhor compreensão. O questionário foi então aplicado para pré-teste em 50 mulheres, em etapas sucessivas, até que não houvesse mais dúvidas. A versão final do instrumento adaptado foi utilizada em estudo de base populacional, autorrespondido anonimamente por 378 mulheres pesquisadas, entre 40 e 65 anos e com 11 anos ou mais de escolaridade, nascidas no Brasil. Foi aplicada uma análise de confiabilidade (consistência interna, pelo alfa de Cronbach), uma análise de validade do construto (correlação de pares de itens que compõem o SPEQ e cada um destes com os quatro fatores obtidos e com o escore total), e uma análise de validade de critério (correlação entre os quatro fatores obtidos com o escore de classificação geral da vida sexual). RESULTADOS: cento e oitenta mulheres responderam a todas as perguntas do SPEQ e foram incluídas na análise. A consistência interna (alfa de Cronbach) para os nove itens do SPEQ situou-se entre 0,55 e 0,77 e o alfa geral foi 0,68. Na análise de validade do construto, a maioria dos coeficientes de correlação se mostrou significativo (valores pPURPOSE: to translate into Brazilian Portuguese and culturally adapt the Short Personal Experiences Questionnaire (SPEQ) to climacteric women. METHODS: the original English version from the University of Melbourne, Australia, was initially translated into Portuguese and back-translated into English. A sociocultural adaptation of vocabulary and linguistic constructions was performed to facilitate comprehension. The questionnaire was then pretested in successive stages in 50 women, until no doubts remained. The final version of the adapted instrument was self-responded by 378 Brazilian-born women, between 40 to 65 years old, with 11 years or more of schooling in a population-based study. The reliability (internal consistency as measured by Cronbach's alpha), the construct validity (correlation coefficients between the items comprising the SPEQ and selected variables) and the criterion validity (correlation coefficient between sexual dysfunction score and overall score of sexual life classification) were analyzed. RESULTS: one hundred and eight women answered all the questions of the SPEQ and were included in the study. Background/Aim. There is a perception that in patients with heart diseases in Serbia sexual rehabilitation does not exist. Why do we not perform our job? A kind of resistance to sexual rehabilitation is common for heart disease patients. Prejudices regarding patients' sexuality, fear and limited knowledge are not rare among the members of medical staff. The aim of this study was to assess knowledge on sexual rehabilitation, inner sense during conversation on sexual rehabilitation and quality of sexual life in patients with myocardial infarction (MI) and bypass surgery (BPS). Also, we wanted to assess an opinion of the medical staff members about that. Methods. We performed a prospective nonrandomized clinical study, which involved 40 participants: ten patients, six partners and twenty four medical staff members. All participants were tested by the self-created questionnaires. The main issues of observation were: knowledge about sexual rehabilitation, quality of sexual life and inner sense during conversation on sexual rehabilitation. The data were analyzed by the Shapiro-Wilk test, Kolmogorov Smirnov test, Mann Whitney Exact test and Fishers Exact test. Statistical significance was set up to p < 0.05. Results. There was a statistically significant difference among the participants regarding an attitude when sexual activity should be resumed after MI or BPS. The members of medical staff had a significantly different opinion about the most important team members responsible for sexual rehabilitation performance. There was a statistically significant difference (p = 0.01) in quality of patient's sexual life after MI or BPS (score: 14.2 ± 5.5) in relation to conditions before them (score: 21.3 ± 3.1). The members of medical staff had significantly (p = 0.05) worse inner sense (score: 3.8 ± 0.7) during and after fulfilling the questionnaires than the patients (score: 4.6 ± 0.5). Conclusion. Ignorance and prejudices are reasons why we do not perform our job.

OBJETIVO: traduzir para o português, adaptar culturalmente e validar o questionário Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). MÉTODOS: dois tradutores brasileiros, cientes dos objetivos desta pesquisa, preparam duas versões do FSFI para o português, as quais foram retro-traduzidas por outros dois tradutores ingleses. As diferenças foram harmonizadas e pré-testadas em um estudo piloto. As versões finais do FSFI e de outro questionário, o Short-Form Health Survey, já vertido e publicado em português, foram simultaneamente administradas a cem pacientes. Foram testadas as propriedades psicométricas do FSFI, como confiabilidade (consistência interna e teste-reteste) e validades de construto. O reteste foi realizado após quatro semanas, a partir da primeira entrevista. RESULTADOS: o processo de adaptação cultural não alterou a versão em português do FSFI comparado ao original. O alfa de Cronbach padronizado do questionário foi 0,96; avaliado por domínios, variou de 0,31 a 0,97. Como medida de confiabilidade teste-reteste, foi aplicado o coeficiente de correlação intra-classes, que foi considerado forte e idêntico (1,0). O coeficiente de correlação de Pearson entre o FSFI e o Short-Form Health Survey foi positivo, mas fraco na maioria dos domínios afins, variando de 0,017 a 0,036. CONCLUSÕES: a versão do FSFI foi traduzida para o português e adaptada culturalmente e é válida para avaliação da resposta sexual das mulheres brasileiras.PURPOSE: to translate from English into Portuguese, adapt culturally and validate the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). METHODS: knowing the objectives of this research, two Brazilian translators have prepared a version each from the FSFI into Portuguese. Both versions have then been retro-translated into English by two English translators. After harmonizing the differences, they have been pre-tested in a pilot study. The final versions from the FSFI and from another questionnaire, the Short-Form Health Survey, which had already been translated and published in Portuguese, have then been simultaneously administered to one hundred patients, to test the FSFI psychometric proprieties concerning reliability (internal consistency and testing-retesting) and construct validity. Retesting was done after four weeks from the first interview. RESULTS: the process of cultural adaptation has not altered the Portuguese version of the FSFI, as compared to the original. The FSFI standardized Cronbach alpha was 0.96, and the evaluation by domains has varied from 0.31 to 0.97. As a measure of test-retest confidentiality, it was applied the intra-class coefficient, which has been considered strong and identical (1.0). Pearson's correlation coefficient between the FSFI and the Short-Form Health Survey was positive, but weak in most of the interrelated domains, varying from 0.017 to 0.036. CONCLUSIONS: the FSFI English version has been translated into Portuguese and culturally adapted, being reliable to evaluate the sexual response of Brazilian women.

The Dual Control Model proposes that sexual arousal and related processes are dependent on the balance between sexual excitation and sexual inhibition, and that individuals vary in their propensity for these processes. This scoping review provides an overview and discussion of the questionnaires used to measure the propensities for sexual excitation and inhibition, their translation and validation in other languages, and their application in empirical research on topics ranging from sexual desire and arousal, sexual (dys)function, sexual risk taking, asexuality, hypersexuality, and sexual aggression. A total of 152 papers, published between 2009 and 2022 and identified using online databases, were included in this review. The findings, consistent with those reviewed by Bancroft et al. (2009), suggest that sexual excitation is particularly relevant to sexual desire and responsivity and predictive of asexuality and hypersexuality. Sexual inhibition plays a role in sexual dysfunction. sexual risk taking, and sexual aggression, although often in interaction with sexual excitation. Suggestions for the further development of the model and for future studies are discussed.

Background and Aims: Despite the inclusion of Compulsive Sexual Behavior (CSB) as a diagnostic entity in the ICD-11 and the increasing number of studies addressing psychological factors leading to its onset and maintenance, little is known about the role of hormonal factors when accounting for this clinical condition (especially in women). This study aimed to provide insights into the association between testosterone levels (i.e., the androgen more intimately linked to sexual desire and arousability) and CSB in both men and women., Methods: A total of 80 participants (40 men [Mage = 22.31; SD = 2.93] and 40 women [Mage = 21.79; SD = 2.06]) provided a saliva sample for the estimation of the level of free testosterone and completed a battery of measures assessing CSB and other related sexual domains (sexual sensation seeking and online/offline sexual behavior)., Results: In men, salivary testosterone had a positive and significant correlation with three scales assessing CSB (r between 0.316 and 0.334). In women, these correlations were small and non-significant (r between 0.011 and 0.079). In both men and women, the level of salivary testosterone had small non-significant correlations with the other domains of sexual behavior assessed., Discussion and Conclusions: Individuals' level of testosterone may contribute to the etiopathogenesis of CSB, but only in men. In women, alternative psychological -i.e., motivational, behavioral, or cognitive- processes may be playing a more central role in the expression of this condition.

In the eighteenth century, masturbation was extended from the moral to the medical sphere and conceptualized as being the cause of various deteriorative physical illnesses. In the nineteenth century, psychiatrists accepted that difficult to control masturbation was a feature of many mental disorders. They also believed that masturbation could play a casual role in a specific type of insanity with a distinctive natural history. In 1962, E.H. Hare published an article on the concept of masturbatory insanity that became an important explication of the masturbation and mental illness relationship in the history of psychiatry. Historical research published subsequent to Hare's article suggests several updates to his analysis. Hare did not note that the masturbation and mental illness relationship was promoted to the general public by quacks peddling quick cures. Hare emphasized psychiatrists' condemnatory language only, neglecting the aspiration of psychiatrists to treat disorders caused by excessive masturbation, not punish the sin of masturbation. Hare recognized the importance of hebephrenia and neurasthenia to this history but attributed the decline of masturbation related mental illness in part to the rejection of an irrational, unscientific hypotheses about masturbation's causal role. As an alternative, we suggest that before the causal role of masturbation was widely abandoned, the concepts of hebephrenia and neurasthenia gained a competitive advantage and became primary diagnoses for cases that once would have been conceptualized as masturbatory insanity.

OBJETIVO: traduzir e validar o Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) para grávidas brasileiras. MÉTODOS: participaram da pesquisa 92 gestantes assistidas em ambulatório de pré-natal de baixo risco, com diagnóstico da gravidez confirmado por ultra-sonografia precoce. Inicialmente, traduzimos o questionário FSFI para a língua portuguesa (do Brasil), de acordo com os critérios internacionais. Foram realizadas adaptações culturais, conceituais e semânticas do FSFI, em função das diferenças da língua, para que as gestantes compreendessem as questões. Todas as pacientes responderam duas vezes ao FSFI, no mesmo dia, com dois entrevistadores diferentes, com intervalo de uma hora de uma entrevista para a outra. Em seguida, 7 a 14 dias depois, o questionário foi novamente aplicado numa segunda entrevista. Foram avaliadas a confiabilidade (consistência interna intra e interobservador) e a validade do construto (para demonstrar que o questionário avalia a função sexual). RESULTADOS: adaptações culturais foram necessárias para obtermos a versão final. A consistência interna intra-observador (alfa de Chronbach) dos diversos domínios oscilou de moderada a forte (0,791 a 0,911) e a consistência interobservador variou de 0,791 a 0,914. Na validação do construto, foram obtidas correlações de moderada a forte entre os escores finais (gerais) do FSFI e do Quociente Sexual Feminino (QS-F), que tem a capacidade de avaliar a função sexual feminina. CONCLUSÕES: o FSFI foi adaptado à língua portuguesa e à cultura brasileira, apresentando significante confiabilidade e validade, podendo ser incluído e utilizado em futuros estudos da função sexual de grávidas brasileiras.PURPOSE: to translate and to validate the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) for Brazilian pregnant women. METHODS: ninety-two pregnant women attended at a low risk prenatal clinic, with diagnosis of the pregnancy confirmed by precocious ultrasonography, participated in the research. Initially, we translated the FSFI questionnaire for Portuguese language (of Brazil) in agreement with the international criteria. Cultural, conceptual and semantics adaptations of FSFI were accomplished, because of the differences of the language, so that the pregnant women understood the subjects. All the patients answered FSFI twice, in the same day, with two different interviewers, with an hour interval from one to other interview. After 7 to 14 days, the questionnaire was applied again in a second interview. Reliability (internal intra and interobserver consistence) and the validity of the constructo (to demonstrate that questionnaire measures the sexual function) were appraised. RESULTS: Cultural adaptations were necessary for us to obtain the final version. The internal intra-observer (alpha of Chronbach) consistence of the several domains oscillated from moderate to strong (0,791 to 0,911) and the interobserver consistence varied from 0,791 to 0,914. In the validation of the constructo, were obtained moderate correlations to fort among the final scores (general) of FSFI and of Female Sexual Quotient (QS-F) that has the capacity to evaluate the feminine sexual function. CONCLUSIONS: FSFI was adapted to the Portuguese language and to the Brazilian culture, presenting significant reliability and validity; it could be included and used in future studies of the Brazilian pregnant sexual function.

OBJETIVO: identificar disfunções sexuais em pacientes com câncer de colo uterino submetidas à radioterapia exclusiva pela técnica de braquiterapia de alta taxa de dose. MÉTODOS: foi realizado um estudo descritivo do tipo corte transversal no período de janeiro a junho de 2004. O estudo envolveu 71 pacientes selecionadas de acordo o perfil estabelecido e que vinham sendo seguidas no ambulatório de pélvis do Hospital do Câncer de Pernambuco. Os dados foram coletados a partir de um questionário estruturado, complementado por um exame ginecológico visando investigar queixas de disfunção sexual após a radioterapia. Foi utilizado o programa estatístico Epi-Info 6.04 para processamento e análise dos dados. A análise descritiva foi feita pela média, mediana, valores máximo e mínimo. Para análise bivariada foram realizados os testes de homogeneidade marginal e McNemar, considerando um nível de significância de 5%. RESULTADOS: das complicações ginecológicas identificadas, destacam-se fibrose, estenose e atrofia vaginais (98,6, 76,1 e 71,8% dos casos, respectivamente). As disfunções sexuais identificadas foram: frigidez e falta de lubrificação, de excitação e de orgasmo, que ocorreram em 76,1% dos casos, falta de libido em 40,8% e vaginismo em 5,6% dos casos. CONCLUSÕES: as disfunções sexuais são freqüentes em pacientes com câncer do colo uterino avançado tratadas com radioterapia exclusiva utilizando o protocolo de braquiterapia de alta taxa de dose. Atenção específica deve ser dada à anamnese sexual e ao exame ginecológico durante o acompanhamento destas pacientes.PURPOSE: to identify sexual dysfunctions in patients with cancer of the uterine cervix submitted to exclusive radiotherapy, using the high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy technique. METHODS: a descriptive transversal study from January to June of 2004. The study involved 71 selected patients who had been followed in the pelvis outpatient clinic from the Hospital do Câncer de Pernambuco and selected according to the established profile. Data were collected from a structured questionnaire, complemented by a gynecological exam aimed at investigating complaints of sexual dysfunction after the radiotherapy. Epi-Info 6.04 was the statistical program used to process and analyze the data. Descriptive analysis was done through the mean, median and range. Bivariate analysis was done through the Marginal Homogeneity and McNamara's tests, considering 5% as the level of significance. RESULTS: among the gynecological complications identified, we can highlight fibrosis, stenosis and vaginal atrophy (98.6%, 76.1% and 71.8%, respectively). The sexual dysfunctions identified were: frigidity, lack of lubrication, excitation and orgasm in 76.1% of the cases, lack of sex drive in 40.8% and vaginism in 5.6% of the cases. CONCLUSIONS: sexual dysfunctions are frequent in patients with cancer of the advanced uterine cervix treated with exclusive radiotherapy using the protocol of HDR. Specific attention should be given to the sexual anamnesis and the gynecological exam during these patients' attendance.

Objective: To describe the relationship between the presence of early maladaptive schemas in self-esteem and sexual satisfaction in adults; men and women with heterosexual preference in the Medellin metropolitan area. Sexual satisfaction is a topic of interest in the field of psychology, which in Colombia has been treated by gynecologists and urologists. Early maladaptive schemas are cognitive-affective structures with a high emotional charge which develop during the first years of life as a result of the interaction between baby and caregivers and which later on are directly or indirectly related to psychological disorders. Methodology: Observational, analytical, cross-sectional study. Variables were not deliberately manipulated nor influenced upon. Comparisons were established and the relationships between early maladaptive schemas in self-esteem and the index of sexual satisfaction in young adults in Medellin were analyzed. Results: Of the sample total, 59.3% of the population had one or more active early maladaptive schemas in self-esteem; 60.3% of subjects with active schemas in self-esteem were sexually dissatisfied. Conclusions: Statistical relationships (p <0.01) with clinical relevance were confirmed amongst early maladaptive schemas in self-esteem and sexual satisfaction. There have been several products developed for male sexual dysfunction. However, developing agents for female sexual dysfunction is lagging behind for various reasons. Sildenafil citrate (Viagra) and Tadalafil (Cialis), which have been prescribed for male sexual function disorders, are known to act on vessels.[1] On the other hand, flibanserin is thought to act on brain. Flibanserin has been approved by U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) of premenopausal women in 2015, and is expected to be released in South Korea soon. Authors wrote this article to acknowledge flibanserin to sexologists for females or physicians for menopausal medicine, so that this agent can be safely used for females who have HSDD. La tumescencia peneal nocturna son erecciones que se producen frecuentemente asociadas con períodos de sueño MOR (movimiento rápido de los ojos) y se monitorea mediante el uso de manómetros de mercurio situados en la base y el glande del pene, conectados al electroencefalógrafo. Esta prueba permite medir la expansión circunferencial del pene, el número de erecciones nocturnas y su duración y brinda información sobre la integridad de los mecanismos neurales y vasculares que intervienen en la fisiología de la erección, por lo que la aplicación de la tumescencia peneal nocturna contribuye al diagnóstico diferencial entre la disfunción sexual eréctil orgánica y la psicógena. This test allows to measure the circumferential enlargement of the penis, the number of nocturnal erections and their duration. It also gives information on the integrity of the neural and vascular mechanisms that take part in the physiology of erection and, therefore, the application of nocturnal penile tumescence contributes to the differential diagnosis between the organic and the psychogenic sexual erectile dysfunction. Background and Aims: Hypersexual disorder is characterized by recurrent and intense sexual fantasies, sexual urges, or sexual behaviors that can lead to clinically relevant levels of distress and adverse consequences for affected individuals. Earlier research has established a connection between sexual phenomena, such as compulsive sexual behavior, and personality features. The aim of the present study was to gain further insights into the associations of personality maladjustment and HD., Methods: The present study applied the dimensional approach of personality maladjustment presented in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) to connect compulsive sexual behavior to personality maladjustment. We investigated 47 men suffering from HD (age: M = 36.51, SD = 11.47) and 38 matched men without HD (age: M = 37.92, SD = 12.33) regarding personality maladjustment using a 100-item version of the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5-BF)., Results: The men with HD showed higher levels of personality maladjustment regarding all PID-5-BF domains (negative affect, detachment, psychoticism, antagonism, and disinhibition) and significantly differentiated from men without HD in the level of subordinate facets. However, no domain of personality differentiated significantly between groups using a binary stepwise logistic regression analysis., Discussion and Conclusions: In sum, the findings of the study underline the extent of personality maladjustment in men with HD. Interpersonal difficulties which men with HD frequently experience can contribute to clinically relevant levels of distress and adverse consequences reported by affected individuals.

Muslim women experience sexuality and sexual dysfunction in a distinct manner that is influenced by religious and cultural standards. Muslim women experiencing sexual pain are a unique patient population whose cultural background should be understood by health care professionals to provide culturally competent care., Objectives: To identify the psychosocial factors that influence Muslim women's experience of sexual pain., Methods: A comprehensive review of the literature through PubMed and Google Scholar was conducted to compile information related to sexual dysfunction, sexual pain, and treatment options in the Muslim women population in the United States and internationally., Results: Painful sex among Muslim women has been associated with female genital cutting, cultural taboos, lack of sex education, absence of language to discuss sex, negative cognitions about sex, expectations to bear the male partner's inconsiderate sexual performance, and familial interference. Typical treatments for sexual pain in Islamic countries were explored, with new treatments that have recently been tested., Conclusion: Understanding sexual pain among Muslim women, including the religious and cultural factors that are potentially associated with this pain, is important for health care professionals to care for their Muslim patients in a culturally competent manner and reduce the implicit bias that may affect quality of care. It appears that providing sexual education, with treatment modalities such as psychotherapy and physical therapy, is useful in treating female sexual pain. Background and Aims: Despite its inclusion in the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases, there is a virtual paucity of high-quality scientific evidence about compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD), especially in underrepresented and underserved populations. Therefore, we comprehensively examined CSBD across 42 countries, genders, and sexual orientations, and validated the original (CSBD-19) and short (CSBD-7) versions of the Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder Scale to provide standardized, state-of-the-art screening tools for research and clinical practice., Method: Using data from the International Sex Survey (N = 82,243; Mage = 32.39 years, SD = 12.52), we evaluated the psychometric properties of the CSBD-19 and CSBD-7 and compared CSBD across 42 countries, three genders, eight sexual orientations, and individuals with low vs. high risk of experiencing CSBD., Results: A total of 4.8% of the participants were at high risk of experiencing CSBD. Country- and gender-based differences were observed, while no sexual-orientation-based differences were present in CSBD levels. Only 14% of individuals with CSBD have ever sought treatment for this disorder, with an additional 33% not having sought treatment because of various reasons. Both versions of the scale demonstrated excellent validity and reliability., Discussion and Conclusions: This study contributes to a better understanding of CSBD in underrepresented and underserved populations and facilitates its identification in diverse populations by providing freely accessible ICD-11-based screening tools in 26 languages. The findings may also serve as a crucial building block to stimulate research into evidence-based, culturally sensitive prevention and intervention strategies for CSBD that are currently missing from the literature.

Background: The target population for women's sexual health services in China was unclear. To identify high-risk individuals with psychological barriers to sexual health-seeking behaviors and those at high risk of hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), we investigated correlates of Chinese women's unwillingness to communicate sexual health, the shame of sexual health-related disorders, sexual distress, and HSDD., Methods: An online survey was conducted from April to July 2020., Results: We received 3443 valid responses online (effective rate 82.6%). Participants were mainly Chinese urban women of childbearing age (median 26 years old, Q1-Q3 23-30). Women who knew little about sexual health knowledge (aOR 0.42, 95%CI 0.28-0.63) and were ashamed (aOR 0.32-0.57) of sexual health-related disorders were less willing to communicate sexual health. Age (aOR 4.29, 95%CI 2.26-8.17), low income (aOR 1.52-2.11), family burden (aOR 1.34-1.43), and living with friends (aOR 1.39, 95%CI 1.02-1.91) were independent correlates of women's shame about sexual health-related disorders while living with a spouse (aOR 0.66, 95%CI 0.51-0.86) or children (aOR 0.77, 95%CI 0.62-0.96) were correlated with less shame. Age (aOR 0.98, 95%CI 0.96-0.99) and a postgraduate degree (aOR 0.45, 95%CI 0.28-0.71) were linked with less sexual distress of low sexual desire while having children (aOR 1.38-2.10), intense work pressure (aOR 1.32, 95%CI 1.10-1.60) and heavy family burden (aOR 1.43, 95%CI 1.07-1.92) increased women's odds of having distress. Women with a postgraduate degree (aOR 0.42, 95%CI 0.19-0.90), more knowledge about sexual health (aOR 0.53-0.67), and decreased sexual desire caused by pregnancy, recent childbirth, or menopausal symptoms (aOR 0.60, 95%CI 0.41-0.85) were less likely to have HSDD, while they were more likely to have HSDD when their decreased sexual desire was due to other sexual issues (aOR 2.56, 95%CI 1.84-3.57) and partners' sexual problems (aOR 1.72, 95%CI 1.23-2.39)., Conclusion: Sexual health education and related services need to focus on psychological barriers of women with older age, insufficient knowledge of sexual health, intense work pressure, and poor economic conditions. The medical staff need to pay attention to the sexual health of women with intense work or life pressure and a history of gynecological disease. Background: The Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) remains the most widely used scale for assessing female sexual function. However, while an adapted version of the FSFI has been proven to be suitable for Western sexual minority women, it has yet to be used in China., Aim: This study aimed to validate the Mandarin Chinese version of the adapted FSFI among Chinese cisgender heterosexual women and sexual and gender minority women, and evaluate its psychometric properties., Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted. The modified scoring method related to zero responses was examined, and structural validity, internal consistency, internal reliability, convergent validity, and known-group validity were evaluated., Outcomes: The primary measure was the adapted FSFI, and the Positive Sexuality Scale and the New Sexual Satisfaction Scale-Short Form were used to test convergent validity., Results: A total of 431 Chinese adult women were recruited, including 193 cisgender heterosexual women and 238 sexual and gender minority women. Confirmatory factor analysis using the original scores supported the original 6-factor model. Using both Cronbach's α and McDonald's ω, the results showed that the values of the total scale and 6 subscales were in the 0.76 to 0.98 and 0.83 to 0.98 ranges, respectively, indicating satisfactory reliability. Moderate-to-strong correlations among the total FSFI scores and positive sexuality and sexual satisfaction were found (r = 0.32-0.71), supporting good convergent validity., Clinical Implications: The adapted FSFI facilitates the use of more inclusive language in the clinical setting, allowing for a more comprehensive and unbiased assessment of sexual function in all women., Strengths and Limitations: This study recruited both cisgender women of varied sexual orientations and gender minorities who were assigned female at birth, demonstrating that the adapted FSFI could be suitably applied to sexual minority populations. However, from a fully inclusive perspective of sex and gender, there is no research on how to accurately evaluate transgender women with female external genitalia or appropriately assess those with a female reproductive system but who do not self-identify as female. Therefore, more in-depth research is needed to further revise the FSFI for better use in the wider female population., Conclusion: This Chinese version of the adapted FSFI has good psychometric properties and is a reliable and valid instrument to assess female sexual function. Background: Sexual dysfunction is common among patients with psychiatric disorders but might be under-reported due to Asian sociocultural factors. Recognition of sexual dysfunction and associated factors in this vulnerable population would help clinicians properly assess and manage related conditions., Aims: We aimed to examine the prevalence of sexual dysfunction and its associated factors among patients with psychiatric disorders in Thailand., Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. We enrolled participants aged 18 and older who visited the psychiatry clinic at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand between August 2020 and December 2021. Demographic and clinical data were assessed, and all psychiatric disorders and sexual dysfunctions were diagnosed by clinical interview using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition. Statistical analysis was done to explore the association between sexual dysfunction and related factors., Results: Sexual dysfunction was diagnosed in 101 (50.0%) of the total 202 participants. The mean (standard deviation, SD) age was 30.2 (9.0) years, and the majority of patients were men (54.5%), single (81.2%), employed (47.5%) and had a coexisting depressive disorder (48.0%). Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed a significant association between sexual dysfunction and quality of life, unemployment, and the dosage of antidepressants and benzodiazepines., Conclusions: The prevalence of sexual dysfunction among this population was relatively high. However, the findings may represent only a portion of affected psychiatric patients for others with sexual dysfunction symptoms but without functional impairment did not meet the diagnostic criteria for sexual dysfunction. Background and Aims: Compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) has been included as an impulse control disorder in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). However, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying CSBD remain largely unknown, and given previous indications of addiction-like mechanisms at play, the aim of the present study was to investigate if CSBD is associated with structural brain differences in regions involved in reward processing., Methods: We analyzed structural MRI data of 22 male CSBD patients (mean = 38.7 years, SD = 11.7) and 20 matched healthy controls (HC; mean = 37.6 years, SD = 8.5). Main outcome measures were regional cortical thickness and surface area. We also tested for case-control differences in subcortical structures and the effects of demographic and clinical variables, such as CSBD symptom severity, on neuroimaging outcomes. Moreover, we explored case-control differences in regions outside our hypothesis including white matter., Results: CSBD patients had significantly lower cortical surface area in right posterior cingulate cortex than HC. We found negative correlations between right posterior cingulate area and CSBD symptoms scores. There were no group differences in subcortical volume., Conclusions: Our findings suggest that CSBD is associated with structural brain differences, which contributes to a better understanding of CSBD and encourages further clarifications of the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the disorder.

Many relationships between time perspective and a propensity to engage in risky behaviors or developing addictions have been demonstrated. The aim of our study was to determine the differences in intensity of individual time perspectives in people with compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) and risky sexual behavior (RSB). The analysis includes 425 men: 98 CSBD (age M = 37.99 years), 63 RSB (age M = 35.70 years), 264 without CSBD and RSB features constituting the control group (age M = 35.08 years). We used the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory, the Sexual Addiction Screening Test-Revised, the Risky Sexual Behavior Scale and a self-constructed survey. The comparative analysis showed a higher intensity of past-negative ( p = 0.040), a lower of past-positive ( p < 0.001) and a present-fatalistic ( p = 0.040) outlook in the CSBD group compared to the control group. Compared to the participants with RSB, the CSBD group was characterized by a higher intensity of past-negative ( p = 0.010), a lower of past-positive ( p = 0.004) and a present-hedonistic perspective ( p = 0.014). The RSB group also achieved higher results from the present-hedonistic perspective ( p = 0.046) compared to the control group. The CSBD patients indicate a stronger tendency to focus on negative past compared to non-CSBD men, both taking and not taking RSB. The time perspective profiles of RSB men are similar to those who do not engage in RSB. The distinguishing feature of men with RSB without CSBD is a greater ability to enjoy current experiences.

Background: Little attention has been given to efficacious treatment and adherence to treatment of compulsive sexual behavior (CSB)., Aims: Randomized controlled trial investigated short-term psychodynamic group therapy followed by relapse prevention group (STPGP-RPGT) and pharmacological treatment (PT) for CSB men on sexual compulsivity and adherence., Method: 135 men, 38 (SD = 9) years old on average, were randomly assigned to 1) STPGP-RPGT; 2) PT; 3) Both. Participants completed measures at baseline, 25th, and 34th week. 57 (42.2%) participants dropped out between baseline and 25th week, and 68 (50.4%) between baseline and 34th week. 94 (69.6%) did not adhere (80% pills taken or attended 75% therapy sessions)., Results: A significant interaction effect was found between time and group (F (4, 128) = 2.62, P = 0.038, ES = 0.08), showing who received PT improved less in sexual compulsivity than those who received STPGP-RPGT (t = 2.41; P = 0.038; ES = 0.60) and PT + STPGP-RPGT (t = 3.15; P = 0.007, ES = 0.74). Adherent participants improved more in sexual compulsivity than non-adherent at the 25th week (t = 2.82; P = 0.006, ES = 0.65) and 34th week (t = 2.26; P = 0.027, ES = 0.55), but there was no interaction effect, F (2, 130) = 2.88; P = 0.06; ES = 0.04). The most reported behavior (masturbation) showed greater risk of non-adherence (72.6%)., Discussion and Conclusions: Adherent participants improved better than non-adherent. Participants who received psychotherapy improved better than those who received PT. Methodological limitations preclude conclusions on efficacy.

The link between Compulsive Sexual Behavior (CSB) and atypical sexual interests is elusive. This study aimed to provide preliminary insights into the relationship between both aspects. The study sample comprised 61 self-identified straight men. CSB was measured through a composite self-report index assessing symptoms of CSB, whereas sexual interests -atypical and normophilic- were assessed objectively through penile plethysmography. The CSB index had small, non-significant correlation with greater sexual response to different sexual stimuli ( r general sexual responsiveness =.127 [95% CI: -.137, .384]). In terms of overall sexual interest, increased scores on the CSB index had small, non-significant correlation with a higher preference for younger sexual stimuli ( r = -.098 [95% CI: -.499, .215]) and persuasive sex ( r = .10 [95% CI: -.168, .316]). Finally, CSB had a moderate correlation with sexual response when presented with stimuli depicting "female toddler coercive" ( r = .27 [95% CI: -.083, .544]). We conclude that our findings do not support the hypotheses that CSB is significantly related to an increased arousability across sexual stimuli. The study findings also suggest that CSB may be, to a small degree, predisposed to experience sexual attraction toward children. Given the preliminary nature of the study, these conclusions warrant further research. Alternative explanations for the study findings related to the particular components of CSB that may be related to typical and atypical sexual interests are also considered.

Background: Previous studies linking compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) and sexual health have shown mixed results, which could be due to the fact that different CSBD facets may have differential relationships with sexual functioning., Aim: As CSBD is a multidimensional disorder, we wanted to investigate whether distinct CSBD domains are differentially related to sexual health., Methods: Two online studies were conducted-the first on a convenience sample (812 Polish participants; mean [SD] age, 22.07 [5.91] years) and a replication study on a representative sample of Polish adults (n = 1526; 43.02 [14.37]). Hierarchical regression was employed with sexual functioning as a predicted variable and CSBD symptoms as predictors., Outcomes: The Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder Scale was used to assess CSBD symptoms, and the Arizona Sexual Experience Scale was used to measure sexual dysfunction., Results: In study 1, CSBD salience (β = -.20, P < .001) predicted hyperfunction (ie, stronger sex drive, easier sexual arousal, easier vaginal lubrication/penile erection, easier ability to reach an orgasm, and more satisfying orgasms). Yet, CSBD negative consequences (β = .15, P = .001) and dissatisfaction (β = .22, P < .001) predicted hypofunction (ie, weaker sex drive, more difficulties in sexual arousal, greater difficulties in vaginal lubrication/penile erection, less ability to reach an orgasm, and less satisfying orgasms). Similar results were found in study 2: salience (β = -.26, P < .001) and relapse (β = -.11, P = .004) predicted hyperfunction, while negative consequences (β = .12, P < .001) and dissatisfaction (β = .12, P < .001) predicted hypofunction., Clinical Implications: Our results stress the importance of assessing the severity of each group of symptoms in patients with CSBD to better understand possible difficulties in their sexual functioning., Strengths and Limitations: Our studies are the first to evaluate the effects of each CSBD domain on sexual health. We also replicated results obtained from a convenience sample on a representative sample. The cross-sectional design of the current studies does not allow causal relations to be tested, so future longitudinal research should be carried out. We also gathered data from a general population-thus, it is important to replicate these results on patients diagnosed with CSBD., Conclusion: Our research points out the differential impact of CSBD domains on sexual health: salience and relapse are related to sexual hyperfunction, while negative consequences and dissatisfaction to hypofunction., (© The Author(s) 2023.
