This paper presents the design and prototype development of a compact frequency‐selective surface (FSS) for shielding WLAN signals. The FSS unit‐cell geometry is evolved by modifying the arms of the conventional crossed dipole element. The footprint of the unit cell is only 6 mm × 6 mm × 1.6 mm. The proposed FSS offers stop band characteristics at 5 GHz for both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes. In addition, the FSS offers angular stability up to 60°. A prototype of the proposed FSS is fabricated and measured to validate its simulations. Measured bandwidth of the stop band is 410 MHz, referenced at −20 dB for both TE and TM modes. In this work, a compact conformal swastik frequency‐selective surface (FSS) has been proposed for shielding 4G/5G signals. The resonating unit of FSS is realized using swastik geometry. The proposed FSS offers resonance at 1800 MHz for 4G band and 3300 MHz for sub‐6 5G band. The unit‐cell dimension is 0.11λ0 × 0.11λ0, where λ0 is the free space wavelength corresponding to the lowest resonating frequency. The proposed FSS provides a stable response for both the TE and TM modes of polarization up to 60°. To validate the simulated results, the FSS was fabricated and tested. In this paper, two 50Ω terminated rat-race hybrid couplers based on uniform folded structures are proposed for equal division of power. The proposed designs are of simple in geometry and have an area of only one-fourth of the conventional coupler. The first technique is two-fold double section topology operating at 1.77 GHz designed with the conventional impedance ratio of √2 between port and transmission line which exhibits good in-band characteristics and requires a minimum track width of 0.8 mm. The second technique is stub-loaded double section topology where the novelty lies in deploying impedance matched stubs which avoids high impedance lines by maintaining an impedance ratio less than 2 between port and transmission line. In addition to good passband characteristics, it also suppresses higher harmonics up to 6.3f0 and requires a minimum track width of 0.41 mm which makes it easy for realization. The bottom line of both designs is to achieve extreme structural simplicity without using high impedance transmission lines of more than 100Ω, narrow tracks less than 0.4 mm, lumped elements, and via holes. A single-layer band-stop frequency selective surface (FSS) with miniaturized periodic element is proposed in this paper. The unit cell size of the proposed FSS is 0.047λ0 where λ0 stands for free space wavelength. The proposed unit cell consists of hexagonal concentric rings connected as a single loop by altering it by flexuous segment. Increased electrical length and effective space utilization achieve a unit cell dimension of 7.29 mm × 12.63 mm. In addition, the proposed FSS exhibits a stable response for TE and TM modes of polarization and oblique incidences. Therefore, the proposed design ensures angular and polarization independence. The full wave EM simulation of the proposed hexagonal unit cell FSS is carried out and then fabricated using the PCB method. Simulated results are validated using different measurements. This paper presents a miniaturized multi-band frequency selective surface for band-stop applications. The proposed design is evolved from a modified swastik structure with L-shaped arms printed on FR4 substrate. The structure is designed to operate at 2.4, 5.8, 8.6, and 10.8 GHz covering Wifi, WiMAX, and X-band applications. The proposed quad-band FSS has an overall unit cell size of 0.084 λ0 × 0.084 λ0, where λ0 is the wavelength of the lower operational frequency. The symmetric FSS structure provides the advantage of polarization independency. It also exhibits a stable frequency response up to 60° for both the horizontally polarized EM waves (Transverse Magnetic Mode) and the vertically polarized EM waves (Transverse Electric Mode). Moreover, measurement results obtained from the fabricated prototype are compared with the simulation results and are found to be in close agreement with each other. This letter presents a 2.5-D frequency selective surface (FSS) based on four-legged loaded loop elements of third-order iteration inspired by fractal geometries. This FSS design strives to harness the efficacy of the space-filling property of fractals and an additional degree of freedom associated with the use of metal vias in planar structures to obtain a miniaturized unit cell by enhancing the electrical length altogether. The proposed FSS provides a band-stop response with resonance at 1.056 GHz and demonstrates identical transmission curves for transverse-electric and transverse-magnetic modes of polarization of the incident wave. The unit cell of the proposed FSS achieves a figure-of-merit (λ0/P) = 29, where λ0 is the free space resonant wavelength and P is the periodicity exhibited by the unit cell, and offers an excellent angular stability up to 75° for oblique incidence. A single-layer miniaturized tri-band frequency selective surface (FSS) for bandstop filtering applications has been proposed in this work. The metallic layer with four-branched meandered pattern connected in the center is engraved on a dielectric FR-4 substrate. The three stopbands operating at 2.6, 5.6, and 7.1 GHz provides −10 dB bandwidth of 437, 447, and 552 MHz respectively. The size of the unit cell is 0.067 λ∘ × 0.067 λ∘, where λ∘ is the wavelength of the first resonance frequency. As a figure of merit, the symmetric FSS structure provides the advantage of polarization independence. The proposed compact FSS structure exhibits a stable angular response up to 60° in TE and TM mode. The design, development, fabrication, and testing of a wideband reflectarray antenna with a novel concentric ring element operating over Ku/K band frequencies is presented in this paper. The element characterization is performed using the infinite array approach and is inferred that the proposed unit cell offers a higher phase variation of 643° by changing the size of the concentric rings. The proposed reflectarray antenna has a circular geometry and is constructed using 437 elements with an element separation of 0.43λ0. The proposed reflectarray offers a 3 dB gain bandwidth of 35% (15–21 GHz). The aperture efficiency is estimated to be 58.78% at 16.5 GHz. The prototype reflectarray is fabricated and tested to validate the simulation results. The measured peak gain of the reflectarray is 28.4 dBi with a side lobe level of −17.6 dB. The measured cross‐polarization level is less than −32 dB. Furthermore, it is inferred that the proposed unit cell has a reduced maximum phase sensitivity of 246°/mm with a gain selectivity of 6 dB at the lowest operating frequency. Contemplating the advancements in communication technology, the analysis of the features of reflectarray, transmitarray, and transmit‐reflectarray becomes essential for future adaptability. This article presents a thorough review of such high‐gain antennas, presenting some of the most relevant solutions published by the scientific society in the field of antennas and wave propagation. Several examples of unit cells for array implementation and complete array designs discussed in various literatures are analyzed. The analysis is focused in identifying the unit cell layouts, such as those developed using microstrip patches, frequency selective surfaces, or metamaterials. The analysis is extended to the ways of improving bandwidth, for example, true time delay elements, phase delay lines, meander lines, and so on, and the various methods used to enable reconfiguration, for example, p‐i‐n diodes, varactor diodes, or microelectromechanical systems. In addition, some antennas, which produce bidirectional beams simultaneously, are also discussed. Finally, all the models are compared against each other in order to highlight their benefits and limitations, summarizing their main characteristics, such as the frequency of operation, bandwidth, phase range, gain, aperture efficiency, sidelobe levels, cross polarization levels, and maximum beam‐steering range. This research paper describes the development of a smart power socket which aims at reducing the vampire power (also called standby power) consumed by the electrical and electronic appliances during its sleep / standby mode. The proposed smart power socket operates in two modes i.e., threshold mode and timer mode. In threshold mode, the smart power socket checks for the amount of power consumed and based on which the decision is taken. In the timer mode, the duration for which the power flows into the circuitry of the device connected to the socket is decided by the timer. The proposed smart power socket considerably reduced the vampire power consumed by domestic appliances. Experimentation has been carried out with the appliances such as Television, Mobile charger, Video game console, Laptop etc. It is proved that the proposed smart power socket reduces the standby power consumed by the electrical and electronic appliances by 95%. The proposed device unplugs the devices in standby mode thereby reducing the vampire power consumed. The device has the advantage of mitigating the wear and tear of control circuitry of the equipment besides reducing the vampire power consumption. A single-layer compact frequency-selective surface (FSS) covering ultra-wideband application is presented in this letter. The proposed FSS constructed with convoluted elements exhibit band-stop response covering a frequency spectrum of 3.1–13.3 GHz at 10 dB. The prototype of the FSS is fabricated and the measured results seem to be in good agreement with the simulated result. A novel miniaturized frequency selective surface (FSS) with a band-stop response at 1.6 GHz is presented in this letter. The designed FSS comprises convoluted elements connected via plated-through holes, which increases the overall electrical length. The proposed FSS unit cell provides the miniaturization of 0.034 λ0 × 0.034 λ0, where λ0 is the free space wavelength corresponding to the resonant frequency. The design, fabrication, and testing of an integrated polarization diversity antenna array for maximizing the wireless channel link in vehicular networks are presented in this paper. The diversity antenna is constructed using unit cell radiators that provide two operating modes. The mode transition is achieved using a pair of PIN diodes. In one state, the antenna provides multiband operation centered at 2.4, 3.5, and 5.8 GHz. In the other state, the antenna covers the entire ultra-wideband (UWB) spectrum. The unit cell radiators are distributed in the horizontal and vertical plane to achieve polarization diversity. Apart from offering a polarization diversity antenna, the orientation of antennas offers a reliable link with the communication devices. The prototype antenna array is fabricated and tested for diversity performance. The performance metrics such as envelope correlation coefficient, diversity gain, and mean effective gain under isotropic, indoor, and outdoor conditions are evaluated and presented. A reconfigurable frequency-selective surface (RFSS) for electromagnetic shielding applications is presented in this letter. The unit cell of the proposed RFSS contains a pair of shorted square loops separated by a uniform distance. Wideband RFSS with the frequency tuning ratio of 1:2.34 achieved by varying the horizontal spacing is proposed. The RFSS covers the frequencies 3.5, 5, and 5.8 GHz shielding the WiMAX, WLAN, and ISM/WiMAX bands, respectively. The prototype of the proposed RFSS is fabricated and loaded on to the mechanical tuning setup. The tuning setup has a box frame with rotating shafts attached to the bevel gears to control the horizontal spacing. The use of collapsible linkage mechanism ensures uniform spacing during reconfigurable operation. The simulated results are validated with measurements. A novel reconfigurable 3-D frequency selective surface (FSS) exhibiting bandstop response is proposed in this paper. The unit cell of the proposed 3-D FSS is constructed from concentric threaded cylinders. The proposed novel 3-D FSS achieves reconfigurability by sliding technique. It offers frequency tuning from 1.86 to 3.10 GHz by sliding the outer cylinder over the inner cylinder. The proposed FSS offers bandstop response in the L- and S-band microwave frequencies. An ultra-wideband (UWB) frequency-selective surface (FSS) exhibiting band rejection characteristic is presented in this paper. The proposed unit cell has the size of 14 × 14 mm2 which is approximately 0.18 × 0.18 λo, where λo corresponds to free space wavelength at the lower cut-off frequency. The proposed UWB FSS consists of a single-layer substrate and provides 20 dB attenuation level for a wide bandwidth of 7.53 GHz at the normal incidence. The proposed FSS is polarization independent and also provides angular-independent operation for the EM wave incidences of 15°, 30° and 45° with 11.5 dB attenuation over a wide range from 4 to 14 GHz. This paper presents a miniaturized frequency selective surface (FSS) with stop band characteristics at the resonant frequency of 5.12 GHz. The unit cell size of the proposed FSS design is in the order of 0.095 λ×0.095 λ. The proposed unit cell is obtained by convoluting the arms of the basic swastika structure. The design provides fractional bandwidth of 9.0 % at the center frequency of 5.12 GHz in the 20 dB reference level of insertion loss. The symmetrical aspect of the design delivers identical response for both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes thereby exhibiting polarization independent operation. The miniaturized design provides good angular independency for various incident angles. The dispersion analysis is done to substantiate the band stop operation of the convoluted swastika FSS. This letter presents the design and implementation of a compact microstrip filter with frequency and bandwidth (BW) reconfiguration. The proposed filter consists of a transmission line coupled with a U-shaped microstrip line resonator. Varactor diodes are deployed at specific locations and are tuned to achieve BW and frequency reconfiguration from 0.8 to 1.5 GHz. The transition from the bandpass mode to the bandstop mode is achieved by reconfiguring the transmission zeros simultaneously. The filter percentage lower passband edge tuning and 17.33% higher passband edge tuning. The proposed filter has simple geometry, low profile, and offers a higher level of operational flexibility in the designed frequency range. The filter is tuned with the help of simple actuators requiring simple bias circuitry. A low profile dual-band frequency selective surface (FSS) for shielding the GSM applications is presented in this paper. The proposed FSS contains the unit cell made of modified double square loop elements with paper as its substrate. The overall thickness of the proposed FSS measures only 0.55 mm. The FSS offers band stop response at 930 and 1720 MHz with 18 dB shielding effectiveness for a bandwidth of 100 and 173 MHz, respectively, thus shielding the GSM signals. Additionally, the modified double square loop element-based FSS is symmetrical providing the advantage of polarization independency. It also exhibits angular stability up to 60° for both the horizontal polarized electric field (TE mode) and vertically polarized electric field (TM mode). This paper deals with a novel miniaturized FSS with wide stop band characteristics for UWB applications. The proposed FSS consists of garland like design printed on either side of the dielectric substrate. The design provides a bandwidth equal to 3.5 GHz at -20 dB reference level of insertion loss which lies within the UWB range. The design delivers stable response for various angular incidences. This paper describes a novel FSS which functions as band stop filter to shield the GSM 1800 MHz downlink band. The FSS is designed to operate with the resonant frequency of 1820 MHz which is the centre frequency for the GSM 1800 MHz downlink band. The novelty is attributed to its unique geometry and the circular apertures endowed with it. The proposed geometry provides shielding effectiveness of 20 dB alongside with 133 MHz bandwidth. The structure holds identical response for both TE and TM Modes of polarization. In addition, the geometry with its circular apertures, a hitherto unexplored feasibility serves the purpose of ventilation and heat dissipation. A novel angular independent dual-band FSS with closely spaced response is discussed in this letter. The proposed single layer FSS comprises of unit cell resembling crooked cross geometry convoluted and branched to provide dual resonant paths. The FSS functioning as a band stop filter at 2.54 and 3.54 GHz works as a shielding component for S band operation. The unit cell size of the proposed FSS is 0.088 \lambda \times 0.088 \lambda where \lambda corresponds to the wavelength of the first resonant frequency. Both the bands are closely spaced providing the frequency ratio of upper to the lower resonant frequency value of 1.39. Additionally, the proposed dual-band FSS is symmetrical in nature, thereby providing identical stop-band response for both TE and TM operation modes. It also exhibits highly stable angular stability. A low profile flexible linear to circular polarizer made of paper substrate is proposed in this paper. The polarizer is constructed from frequency selective surface (FSS) comprising of crossed dipole unit cell elements. The polarizer converts the linearly polarized incident electromagnetic wave to circular polarized wave at 7.0 GHz. The polarizer provides the advantage of use in conformal system, which is substantiated using bending analysis. The proposed reflective polarizer provides a 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth of 13% at the center frequency of 7.0 GHz. In addition, the proposed flexible polarizer provides stable response for angular incidences up to 30°. A novel single layer miniaturized frequency selective surface made of circular unit cell elements is presented in this article. The frequency selective surface (FSS) unit cell measures 0.055λ0 × 0.055λ0, where λ0 corresponds to its free space wavelength. The proposed FSS offers band stop characteristics with bandwidth of 137.5 MHz centered at 1.39 GHz. The symmetrical structure of the unit cell elements provides polarization independency. The miniaturized unit cell elements help achieving angular independency for both TE and TM mode of polarization. The miniaturized design provides excellent angular independency with negligible frequency shift for varying incident angles.
