In this study, Mn3O4 spherical particles (SPs) were synthesized by the sol-gel process, after which they were thermally annealed at 400 °C, and comprehensively characterized. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) revealed that Mn3O4 exhibited a tetragonal spinel structure, and Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy identified surface-adsorbed functional groups. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the specific surface area analyses by Brunauer−Emmett−Teller (BET) revealed a porous, homogeneous surface composed of strongly agglomerated spherical grains with an estimated average particle size of ∼35 nm, which corresponded to a large specific surface area of ∼81.5 m2/g. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that Mn3O4 was composed of metallic cations (Mn4+, Mn3+, and Mn2+) and oxygen species (O2−, OH− and CO32−). The optical bandgap energy is ∼2.55 eV. Assessment of the catalytic performance of the Mn3O4 SPs indicated T90 conversion of CH4 to CO2 and H2O at 398 °C for gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 72000 mL3 g−1 h−1. This observed performance can be attributed to the cooperative effects of the smallest spherical grain size with a mesoporous structure, which is responsible for the larger specific surface area and available surface-active oxygenated species. The cooperative effect of the good reducibility, higher ratio of active species (OLat/OAds), and results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that the total oxidation of CH4 over the mesoporous Mn3O4 SPs might take place via a two-term process in which both the Langmuir−Hinshelwood and Mars−van Krevelen mechanisms are cooperatively involved.

Due to its large hole mobility, organic rubrene (C42H28) has attracted research questions regarding its applications in electronic devices. In this work, extensive first-principles calculations are performed to predict some temperature- and doping-dependent properties of organic semiconductor rubrene. We use density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the electronic structure, elastic and transport properties of the orthorhombic phase of the rubrene compound. The calculated band structure shows that the orthorhombic phase has a direct bandgap of 1.26 eV. From the Vickers hardness (1.080 GPa), our calculations show that orthorhombic rubrene is not a super hard material and can find useful application as a flexible semiconductor. The calculated transport inverse effective mass and electronic fitness function show that the orthorhombic rubrene crystal structure is a p-type thermoelectric material at high temperatures.

CoFe2O4 is a promising catalytic material for many chemical reactions. We used ab initio molecular dynamic simulations to study the structure and reactivity of the A- and B-terminations of the low-index CoFe2O4(001) surfaces to water adsorption at room temperature. Upon adsorption, water partly dissociates on both termination with a higher dissociation degree on the A-termination (30% versus 19%). The 2-fold coordinated Fe3+(tet) in the tetrahedral voids and the 5-fold coordinated Fe3+(oct) in the octahedral voids are the main active sites for water dissociation on the A- and B-termination, respectively. Molecular water, hydroxydes, and surface OH resulting from proton transfer to surface oxygens are present on the surfaces. Both water-free surface terminations undergo reconstruction. The outermost Fe3+(tet) on the A-termination and B-termination move towards the nearby unoccupied octahedral voids. In the presence of a thin film of 32 water molecules, the reconstructions are partially and completely lifted on the A- and B-termination, respectively.

Based on density functional theory, we studied the effect of p- and n-type doping on the structural and electronic properties of MoO _2 monolayers and bilayers. We used niobium (Nb) and nitrogen (N) as p-type dopants, and technetium (Tc) and fluorine (F) as n-type dopants through atomic substitutions. Our study shows that the presence of a substituent in the 4 × 4 supercell of MoO _2 leads to a slight distortion and negligible modification of the lattice parameter. Both p- and n-type doped monolayers exhibit a metallic character. The bilayers obtained by vertically stacking n-p doped monolayers all exhibit a metallic character, as their band diagrams do not show a band gap. The study of their charge difference highlights a physisorption phenomenon. This type of material, which features a nucleophilic site in the p-doped region and an electrophilic site in the n-doped region, is a promising candidate for catalysis. When n-type and p-type doped monolayers are horizontally joined, the resulting stack exhibits a semi-conductor behavior.The special feature of this stacking is that we obtain a true pn junction, that is a space charge zone associated with a potential jump. For its application in infrared junction diodes, we have demonstrated both quantitatively and qualitatively the existence of a potential jump at the junction.

We used density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the structural, electronic, magnetic, mechanical, and thermodynamic properties of CoYSb (Y = Cr, Mo and W) compounds. These are XYZ type half-Heusler alloys, which also exist in the face centred cubic MgAgAs-type structure and conform to F4¯3m space group. We computed these properties in three different atomic arrangements known as Type-I, Type-II, and Type-III phases. In all these phases, the alloys were found to be in the ferromagnetic state. Furthermore, the calculated electronic band structure and the total electronic density of states indicated a metallic behavior in CoWSb, nearly half-metallic behavior in CoMoSb, and half-metallic behavior in CoCrSb, with a minority-spin band gap of 0.81 eV. Furthermore, the calculated mechanical properties predicted an anisotropic behavior of these alloys in their stable phase. Finally, due to its high Debye temperature value, CoCrSb shows stronger covalent bonding than CoMoSb and CoWSb, respectively.

The search for stable and highly efficient solar cell absorbers has revealed interesting materials; however, the ideal solar cell absorber is yet to be discovered. This research aims to explore the potentials of dimethylammonium lead iodide (CH3NH2CH3PbI3) as an efficient solar cell absorber. (CH3NH2CH3PbI3) was modeled from the ideal organic–inorganic perovskite cubic crystal structure and optimized to its ground state. Considering the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effects on heavy metals, the electronic band structure and bandgaps were calculated using the density functional theory (DFT). In contrast, bandgap correction was achieved by using the GW quasiparticle methods of the many-body perturbation theory. The optical absorption spectra were calculated from the real and imaginary dielectric tensors, which are determined by solving the Bethe–Salpeter equations of the many-body perturbation theory. Spin-orbit coupling induces band splitting and bandgap reduction in both DFT and GW methods, while the GW method improves the DFT bandgap. We report a DFT band gap of 1.55 eV, while the effect of spin-orbit coupling reduces the bandgap to 0.50 eV. Similarly, the self-consistent GW quasiparticle method recorded a bandgap of 2.27 eV, while the effect of spin-orbit coupling on the self-consistent GW quasiparticle method reported a bandgap of 1.20 eV. The projected density of states result reveals that the (CH3NH2CH3PbI3) does not participate in bands around the gap, with the iodine (I) p orbital and the lead (Pb) p orbital showing most prominence in the valence band and the conduction band. The absorption coefficient reaches 106 in the ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared regions, which is higher than the absorption coefficient of CH3NH3PbI3. The spectroscopic limited maximum efficiency predicts a high maximum efficiency of about 62% at room temperature and an absorber thickness of about 10–1 to 102 μm, suggesting that (CH3NH2CH3PbI3) has an outstanding prospect as a solar cell absorber.

The density functional theory was used to explore the structural, electronic, dynamical, and thermoelectric properties of a VIrSi half-Heulser (HH) alloy. The minimum lattice constant of 5.69 (Å) was obtained for VIrSi alloy. The band structure and the projected density of states for this HH alloy were calculated, and the gap between the valence and conduction bands was noted to be 0.2 eV. In addition, the quasi-harmonic approximation was used to predict the dynamical stability of the VIrSi HH alloy. At 300 K, the Seebeck coefficient of 370 and −270 μV.K−1, respectively, was achieved for the p and n-type doping. From the power factor result, the highest peak of 18 × 1011 W/cm.K2 is obtained in the n-type doping. The Figure of Merit (ZT) result revealed that VIrSi alloy possesses a high ZT at room temperature, which would make VIrSi alloy applicable for thermoelectric performance.

The ab initio method is used to calculate the electronic, elastic, lattice-dynamic, and thermoelectric properties of the semimetal Half-Heusler compound HfIrAs. Density Functional Theory within Generalized Gradient Approximation is used to carry out calculations of lattice parameters, band structure, electronic density of states, phonon band structure, phonon density of states, elastic moduli, specific heat at constant volume, the Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, the power factor, and the dimensionless figure of merit. The electronic band structure reveals that the compound is semimetal. The phonon dispersion shows that HfIrAs is dynamically stable. The projected phonon density of states, which shows the contribution of each constituent atom at every frequency level, is also reported. The ratio of bulk modulus to shear modulus is 2.89; i.e., the material is ductile, and it satisfies stability criteria. The thermoelectric properties of this compound at different temperatures of 300 K, 600 K, and 800 K are reported as a function of hole concentration for the first time to the best of our knowledge. The dimensionless figure of merit of HfIrAs is 0.57 at 800 K when the doping concentration is 0.01×1020 cm−3. Therefore, this compound is predicted to be a good thermoelectric material.

Currently a lot of attention is paid to 1D nanomaterials due to their advantages in comparison to bulk materials. They offer broad possibilities of application, including photocatalytic water splitting. Simulations of water adsorption on such materials with computationally costly theoretical methods, such as ab initio molecular dynamics, are needed for improvement of such photocatalysts’ efficiency. Still, it is very problematic to treat a real-size nanotube at available computational power. The existing nanotube surface approximations are not accurate and universal enough.We have already proposed methods for 2D model construction out of TiO2 nanotubes of (101) and (001) configuration at the moderately expensive DFT level. The idea behind was to provide a partial description of nanotubular strain by applying lattice constants from nanotubes to slab models, and preserving geometry motifs. We use water adsorption energy, valence band maximum and conduction band minimum positions, as well as DOS shape as criteria for model validation.Our previous work was limited only to specific variants of nanotubes and water adsorption. In this work we establish these novel approaches along a wide nanotube diameter range, in particular for water adsorption studies. We demonstrate that the 2D models do not impose critical compromises in terms of accuracy, and therefore allow calculations of much larger nanotubes than common approaches do.

We combine theoretical and experimental X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) to probe the local environment around cationic sites of bulk spinel cobalt tetraoxide (Co3O4). Specifically, we analyse the oxygen K-edge spectrum. We find an excellent agreement between our calculated spectra based on the density functional theory and the projector augmented wave method, previous calculations as well as with the experiment. The oxygen K-edge spectrum shows a strong pre-edge peak which can be ascribed to dipole transitions from O 1s to O 2p states hybridized with the unoccupied 3d states of cobalt atoms. Also, since Co3O4 contains two types of Co atoms, i.e., Co3+ and Co2+, we find that contribution of Co2+ ions to the pre-edge peak is solely due to single spin-polarized t2g orbitals (dxz, dyz, and dxy) while that of Co3+ ions is due to spin-up and spin-down polarized eg orbitals (dx2−y2 and dz2). Furthermore, we deduce the magnetic moments on the Co3+ and Co2+ to be zero and 3.00 μB respectively. This is consistent with an earlier experimental study which found that the magnetic structure of Co3O4 consists of antiferromagnetically ordered Co2+ spins, each of which is surrounded by four nearest neighbours of oppositely directed spins.

One-dimensional nanomaterials receive much attention thanks to their advantageous properties compared to simple, bulk materials. A particular application of 1D nanomaterials is photocatalytic hydrogen generation from water. Such materials are studied not only experimentally, but also computationally. The bottleneck in computations is insufficient computational power to access realistic systems, especially with water or another adsorbed species, using computationally expensive methods, such as ab initio MD. Still, such calculations are necessary for an in-depth understanding of many processes, while the available approximations and simplifications are either not precise or system-dependent. Two-dimensional models as an approximation for TiO2 nanotubes with (101) and (001) structures were proposed by our group for the first time in Comput. Condens. Matter journal in 2018. They were developed at the inexpensive DFT theory level. The principle was to adopt lattice constants from an NT with a specific diameter and keep them fixed in the 2D model optimization, with geometry modifications for one of the models. Our previous work was limited to studying one configuration of a nanotube per 2D model. In this article one of the models was chosen and tested for four different configurations of TiO2 nanotubes: (101) (n,0), (101) (0,n), (001) (n,0), and (001) (0,n). All of them are 6-layered and have rectangular unit cells of tetragonal anatase form. Results of the current study show that the proposed 2D model is indeed universally applicable for different nanotube configurations so that it can be useful in facilitating computationally costly calculations of large systems with adsorbates.

In this study, we present theoretical X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra at the K-edge of oxygen in zirconia containing Ni dopant atoms and O vacancies at varying concentrations. Specifically, our model system consist of a supercell composed of a zirconia (ZrO2) matrix containing two nickel dopants (2Ni), which substitute two Zr atoms at a finite separation. We found the 2Ni atoms to be most stable in a ferromagnetic configuration in the absence of oxygen vacancies. In this system, each Ni atom is surrounded by two shells of O with tetrahedral geometry, in a similar way as in bulk cubic zirconia. The oxygen K-edge XANES spectrum of this configuration shows a pre-edge peak, which is attributable to dipole transitions from O 1s to O 2p states that are hybridized with unoccupied Ni 3d states. The intensity of this pre-edge peak, however, reduces upon the introduction of a single vacancy in the 2Ni-doped zirconia matrix. The corresponding ground state remains ferromagnetic, while one of the nickel atoms adopts a trigonal bipyramidal geometry, and the other one remains in a tetrahedral geometry. Furthermore, the introduction of two vacancies in the 2Ni-doped zirconia results in the two Ni atoms having distorted octahedral and trigonal bipyramidal geometries and being coupled antiferromagnetically in the ground state. Additionally, the oxygen K-edge XANES spectrum shows a further decrease in the intensity of the pre-edge peak, compared to the case of a single vacancy. Thus, the changes in the intensity of the pre-edge peak evidence a major structural change in the local environment around nickel atoms and, by extension, in the zirconia matrix. This change is due to the structural disorder induced by the 2Ni dopants and the O vacancies. Furthermore, the analysis of the XANES signatures shows that the oxidation state of nickel atoms changes with the introduction of oxygen vacancies. Our study therefore shows a possibility to control the oxidation state and magnetic order in a typical diluted magnetic oxide. Such a finding may be crucial for spintronics-related applications.
