Abstract

Peracetic acid (PAA) has a long history as an efficacious and eco‐friendly disinfectant. It was first synthesised in 1902, and since then a wide range of applications has been developed in various industries. Aquaculture is a more recent industry wherein the potential of PAA is significant. As the global demand for sustainable development increases, there has likewise been growing interest in using PAA in aquaculture as an alternative to less environmentally friendly practices. PAA has no carcinogenic risk to humans (unlike formalin), has negligible harmful by‐products (unlike chlorine‐based disinfectants) and with appropriate precautions, the risks of causing severe human health damage is easier to control than ozone. Fish show strong physiological recovery and adaptation to PAA, whereas susceptible life stages of pathogens are highly vulnerable, enabling a safe and efficacious disinfection of the entire culture water and not the flow‐restricted disinfection by such processes as ultraviolet radiation or ozone. The effective concentration of PAA against many fish pathogens is usually below 2 mg L−1, which is tolerable for most fish, and it has very low environmental risk due to rapid degradation. However, such degradation and the hydrodynamics in production‐scale aquaculture systems complicate the practical use of PAA. In this review, we summarise key results of safe concentrations of PAA and its effectiveness specifically for fish farmers. We also outline major difficulties and possible solutions for practical uses of PAA. We intend to bring global attention to this compound and inspire future possibilities for its sustainable use as a water disinfectant in aquaculture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Objective: The antiparasitic effect of peracetic acid (PAA) was evaluated against an infestation of the protozoan Trichodina spp. in naturally infected juvenile domestic seventh‐generation (F7) Striped Bass Morone saxatilis. Methods: Replicated treatments (n = 3) consisted of 1 and 2 mg/L PAA and a control; treatments were applied every other day for three treatments (30‐min static exposure). Infestation intensity was enumerated 20–24 h after each treatment by counting the number of Trichodina present in a wet mount of excised gill tissue. Result: Neither treatment rate was able to completely eradicate the parasite; however, 2 mg/L PAA resulted in a statistically significant reduction, which equated to 75% reduction of observed parasites. Conclusion: The 2‐mg/L PAA treatment regimen in the present study is proposed as a safe, environmentally friendly, and effective method for reducing the intensity of Trichodina infestations in Striped Bass. Abstract

ObjectivesWe examined whether urban patients who suffered gunshot wounds (GSWs) farther from a trauma center would have longer transport times and higher mortality.MethodsWe used the Illinois State Trauma Registry (1999-2009). Scene address data for Chicago-area GSWs was geocoded to calculate distance to the nearest trauma center and compare prehospital transport times. We used multivariate regression to calculate the effect on mortality of being shot more than 5 miles from a trauma center.ResultsOf 11,744 GSW patients during the study period, 4782 were shot more than 5 miles from a trauma center. Mean transport time and unadjusted mortality were higher for these patients (P < .001 for both). In a multivariate model, suffering a GSW more than 5 miles from a trauma center was associated with an increased risk of death (odds ratio = 1.23; 95% confidence interval = 1.02, 1.47; P = .03).ConclusionsRelative "trauma deserts" with decreased access to immediate care were found in certain areas of Chicago and adversely affected mortality from GSWs. These results may inform decisions about trauma systems planning and funding.

Abstract

Objective: An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of repeated copper sulfate (CuSO4) treatments on the growth and survival of juvenile Walleye Sander vitreus. Methods: Culture tanks were treated with 0 or 0.76 mg/L CuSO4 every other day for five exposures, then were not treated for 14 consecutive days; this regimen was repeated for a total of 10 exposures over the course of 50 days. Copper sulfate treatments had a half‐life of about 60 min. The study was conducted in flow‐through well water at ≈1.5 L/m and 23.8°C. Result: The resulting survival data for CuSO4 treated and nontreated fish was 96% and 85% survival, respectively, and not statically different. There was no difference in weight, with treated weighing 25.3 g compared to 25.2 g for nontreated control fish. Both groups had weight increases of over 400% during the study. Neither group differed in length, with treated fish reaching a mean length of 14.6 cm and nontreated reaching a mean length of 14.5 cm. Conclusion: The results indicate that repeated CuSO4 treatments had no effect on Walleye growth or survival. Impact statementCopper sulfate has a long history of use in aquaculture. While it is no secret that copper toxicity or other deleterious effects can happen, if used appropriately copper sulfate can be one of the most useful chemicals in aquaculture. Abstract

Objective: The sunshine bass (female White Bass Morone chrysops × male Striped Bass M. saxatilis) is an important food fish raised in U.S. aquaculture. Spawning is performed by manually stripping and fertilizing White Bass eggs with Striped Bass sperm. Embryos hatch in approximately 48 h. Mature sunshine bass females can become fertile and produce viable eggs, which is problematic in commercial food‐fish production; therefore, triploid fish are desired. Methods: The present nonreplicated study incorporated three warm and three cold temperature shocks, along with three postfertilization initiation times and three exposure times for each temperature, during initial stages of incubation to induce triploidy. After exposure to temperature shocks, fertilized eggs were incubated in experimental hatching systems. The best performing cold and warm temperatures and times (and an ambient diploid control) were then used to incubate fertilized eggs in a commercial‐scale trial using standard industry practices with a single batch of eggs. Larvae were stocked at about 185,000 larvae/ha (75,000 larvae/acre) in newly filled and fertilized ponds. Fry were sampled weekly and harvested at 30 days. Result: There were 15 survivors from the pond containing fish derived from cold‐shocked fertilized eggs; these individuals were tested via Coulter Counter, and no triploids were detected. Testing of 50 survivors from the pond containing fish derived from warm‐shocked fertilized eggs indicated that 14% were triploid. Conclusion: Therefore, initial trials indicate that warm temperature shock is preferable to cold shock for inducing a greater percentage of triploid sunshine bass. Abstract

This paper analyzes the relationships between the circulation regimes of the 500-hPa height (z500) and 250-hPa zonal winds (u250) in the Pacific–North America region during boreal winter, and the 45-day Northern Hemisphere oscillation in z500. The regimes were calculated using a k-means clustering applied to the leading 12 principal components of the combined z500–u250 anomaly fields. We divided the oscillation into eight arbitrary phases. The oscillation phase z500 composite maps are spatially well correlated with regime z500 composites: phases 1–2 are best correlated with the Arctic Low, phases 3–5 are best correlated with the Pacific Trough, phase 6 is best correlated with the Arctic High, and phases 7–8 are best correlated with the Alaskan Ridge. We found that these correlations are generally consistent with the regimes that tend to occur during the individual oscillation phases: the Arctic Low occurs above significance in phases 1–2, the Pacific Trough occurs above significance in phase 3, and Alaskan Ridge occurs above significance in phases 7–8. Therefore, the oscillation has a preferred order with respect to the regimes. The regime transitions indicate a pattern that moves through the Pacific Wavetrain, a regime that appears for k = 5 as a mean state. Transitions out of this regime into different regimes are preferred in different phases of the oscillation. These results imply a possible enhancement to regime prediction using the low-frequency oscillations in combination with regimes. Significance Statement: Subseasonal prediction, weather forecasting in the 2–4-week range, is important for many parts of society, e.g., water managers, emergency response units, and farmers. However, current prediction skill in this time range is low. This paper performs an initial analysis of a possible method to increase weather statistic prediction skill beyond 10 days in the winter for the Pacific–North America region. This is done by combining two ways of looking at large, long-lasting patterns of pressure systems in the atmosphere, which are associated with various weather statistics like precipitation extremes and storminess. The results indicate this method holds potential skill for enhancing subseasonal prediction. Further investigation might yield forecasting improvements in this important time range.
