The objective of a strawberry nursery is to produce numerous runners and improve the quality of the runner plants, ensuring their uniformity and health. About 80% of the strawberry nurseries in Wanju-gun, Republic of Korea, are cultivated by the growers themselves, which results in variations in the cultivation techniques. Different methods are employed to reduce the nitrogen levels to promote floral bud initiation in the later nursery stage, and these methods vary between farms. This study was conducted on the ‘Sulhyang’ cultivar (Fragaria × ananassa Dutch. cv. Sulhyang) to measure the nutrient content in runner plants obtained from eight growers using various cultivation methods, supply EC levels, nutrient solution termination times, etc., and to correlate the nutrient levels with floral bud initiation during the nursery period. Four investigations were conducted at 15-day intervals from Julian day 214 (2 August) to Julian day 259 (16 September) in 2022, focusing on nutrient management during the nursery period, runner plant growth, petiole nitrate nitrogen content (NO3-N), and soluble solid content (SSC). The NO3-N content decreased, and the SSC/NO3-N ratio increased near the transplanting period, as assessed using a rapid inorganic nutrient diagnostic device. The proportion of runner plants that had advanced to stage 3 or above in floral bud initiation was investigated using a stereomicroscope. As a result, differences in the percentage of floral bud initiation were confirmed based on the varying nutrient management among the farms. In this study, on Julian day 243 (31 August 2022), there was a strong negative correlation (r = −0.86, r2 = 0.73) between the NO3-N content in the runner plants and the percentage of floral bud initiation. These results emphasize the importance of nutrient management during the nursery period, especially for strawberry self-propagating growers, and demonstrate a strong correlation between nutrient content and floral bud initiation in strawberries.

In Korea, the majority of strawberry cultivation follows a forcing culture, where planting occurs in mid-September after the flower differentiation, and harvesting begins at the end of November. October and November constitute off-season, resulting in higher prices. The accelerated forcing culture involves artificially promoting flower differentiation to expedite strawberry harvest. This study aimed to identify the most suitable schedule for strawberry cultivation using the short-day and low-temperature treatments through greenhouse environmental control during the nursery stage. The selection of the most suitable cultivars for accelerated forcing culture among Korean breeding cultivars (‘Sulhyang’, ‘Kuemsil’, ‘Kingsberry’, ‘Vitaberry’, ‘Jukhyang’, and ‘Altaking’) was also part of the objectives. The nursery treatments were initiated on 4 July, 14 July, and 25 July. After approximately 5 weeks of treatment, transplanting was carried out. The control group was transplanted on 15 September. When night-chilling nursery treatment was applied on 4 July, followed by transplanting on 11 August, all six cultivars exhibited flowering earlier compared to the control group, leading to increased early yield. Particularly, the ‘Sulhyang’ cultivar showed the highest marketable yield at 68.6 g per plant in October. This research contributes to identifying the nursery cultivation schedule for off-season strawberry production and selecting suitable cultivars, and is expected to contribute to increased farm income.

Although hydroponic techniques enable intensive and effective crop management, controlling the watering for each crop type and growth stage is challenging using the commonly used timed watering system. Therefore, excessive and insufficient watering occurs frequently. Hydroponic technology that considers the drainage rate can minimize the amount of drainage, thereby reducing environmental pollution and fertilizer consumption. This study compared the drainage rate and the timed watering methods in a strawberry hydroponic system and determined the optimal drainage rate. As the drainage rate increased, the amount of water supplied increased. A significantly negative correlation was found between the amount of water supplied and the total nitrogen content. Drainage electrical conductivity (EC) level was the highest in the 10% drainage rate group. In the 20% drainage rate treatment, leaf length and width increased compared to the four applications timer-supplying method. The yield of fruits weighing more than 27 g was the highest in the 20% drainage rate treatment. Therefore, the 20% drainage rate treatment was the most appropriate. We propose that it is possible to reduce unnecessary fertilizer consumption and increase productivity by controlling the water supply using the drainage rate for precise water supply management of strawberries.

Objectives: Musculoskeletal trauma is a common type of injury that can result from damage to the muscular or skeletal system and has been recognized as a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. This study aims to analyze the efficacy of Pyritum external treatment for musculoskeletal trauma.Methods: Randomized controlled trials evaluating the external treatment effect of Pyritum on various types of musculoskeletal traumatic injuries will be considered and identified in the searches of eight databases from their inception to Feb 2023. There will be no restrictions with respect to the publication status, language, or country. The experimental intervention group will be treated with external application of Pyritum alone or in combination with other therapies, and the comparator intervention group will include all types of control interventions. The primary outcome will be measured as treatment efficacy rate, and secondary outcomes will include pain reduction, pain disappearance time, swelling, joint function, and recovery period. Assessment of the methodological quality of this study will be concluded using the risk of bias assessment recommended by the Cochrane Collaboration. If there are sufficient numbers of studies per group in terms of specific rating scales to compare the treatment effects of Pyrium alone and combined external treatment groups, we will consider subgroup analysis.Results: This systematic review will be conducted in compliance with the PRISMA-P statement.Conclusion: We will conduct an extensive search on the proposed topic within the available literature and provide systematic evidence for the efficacy and safety of external application of Pyritum for all types of musculoskeletal trauma. The evidence generated will help design interventions for the external use of Pyritum for this patient group.

Background Enophthalmos may not appear immediately after trauma due to periorbital swelling in a blowout fracture, and preoperative measurements of enophthalmos cannot be used as a reliable guideline. It is important to predict the eventual final extent of enophthalmos in order to determine whether to perform surgery, and there have been several attempts to predict the degree of late enophthalmos using preoperative orbital volume. The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation between the orbital volume ratio (OVR) with final enophthalmos and the palpebral fissure, and to find the OVR that induced 2 mm of enophthalmos in unilateral unoperated blowout fractures. Methods We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 38 patients and divided them into 3 groups, determined by the fracture location. The relationships between the OVR and both the degree of enophthalmos and the palpebral fissure ratio (PFR) were assessed and, in particular, the OVR that induced 2 mm of enophthalmos was sought. Results Enophthalmos increased in proportion to the OVR, and there was a highly significant correlation between the increase in the OVR and the degree of enophthalmos (P0.05). The OVR that induced 2-mm enophthalmos was 112.18%. Conclusions The final degree of enophthalmos can be estimated by the preoperative measurement of OVR. Preoperative measurements of OVR can be used as quantitative values to predict the final degree of enophthalmos in pure blowout fractures.

Background: Citric acid (CA) and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) have been used to disinfect animals to protect them against avian influenza and foot-and-mouth disease. Objectives: We performed a good laboratory practice (GLP)-compliant animal toxicity study to assess the acute toxic effects of CA and NaOCl aerosol exposure in Sprague-Dawley rats. Methods: Groups of five rats per sex were exposed for 4 h to four concentrations of the two chemicals, i.e., 0.00, 0.22, 0.67, and 2.00 mg/L, using a nose-only exposure. After a single exposure to the chemicals, clinical signs, body weight, and mortality was observed during the observation period. On day 15, an autopsy, and then gross findings, and histopathological analysis were performed. Results: After exposure to CA and NaOCl, body weight loss was observed but recovered. Two males died in the CA 2.00 mg/L group and, two males and one female died in the 2.00 mg/L NaOCl group. In the gross findings and histopathological analysis, discoloration of the lungs was observed in the CA exposed group and inflammatory lesions with discoloration of the lungs were observed in the NaOCl exposed group. These results suggest that the lethal concentration 50 (LC50) of CA is 1.73390 mg/L for males and > 1.70 mg/L for females. For NaOCl, the LC50 was 2.22222 mg/L for males and 2.39456 mg/L for females. Conclusions: The Globally Harmonized System is category 4 for both CA and NaOCl. In this study, the LC50 results were obtained through a GLP-based acute inhalation toxicity assessment. These results provide useful data to reset safety standards for CA and NaOCl use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An epidermoid cyst is a slow-growing benign neoplasm that commonly occurs in the hand. Herein, we report a rare case of an epidermoid cyst with focal neuropathy in the left ring finger of a 38-year-old woman. Preoperatively, the patient complained of erythema, swelling, and paresthesia on her fingertips. On ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging, ulnar digital nerve thickening and inflammation around the nerve were observed, and a neurogenic tumor-like schwannoma was expected. An excisional biopsy with neurectomy of the involved sensory branch of the ulnar digital nerve was performed under brachial plexus block. During the operation, there is such an uncommon morphology, yellowish debris under the epineurium of the ulnar digital nerve sensory branch was involved with the epidermoid cyst and seemed to be propagating along the sensory branch from the skin surface. After the operation, the paresthesia and swelling resolved. Over the 6-month follow-up in the outpatient clinic, no complications and recurrences occurred. Thus, we reported a rare intraneural epidermoid cyst (occurred along the digital nerve) in the finger, and we believe that considering the anatomical characteristics and the surrounding structures is important during mass excision. Purpose: This study evaluated the functional and aesthetic outcomes of a wide-second dorsal metacarpal artery perforator flap for reconstruction of the first web space of the hand. This flap sets the proximal edge of the extensor retinaculum as the distal limit. Methods: We measured the preoperative and postoperative angles of the first web space and assessed the quality of the donor site scar in eight patients. Results: The average flap size was 5.5 x 2.8 cm (range, 5.0 x 1.5 cm to 5.0 x 6.0 cm), and all flaps survived completely. The mean postoperative angle was 53°. The mean Vancouver Scar Scale score of the donor site was 4 points, and the patients had near-normal thickness and vascularity values. There was no distortion of the scar, and patients were satisfied with the scar appearance of the donor site. Conclusion: The wide-second dorsal metacarpal artery perforator flap is a useful technique to reconstruct large defects of the first web space. It is easy to raise, thin, and pliable, and has excellent color and tissue matching. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The sustained water repellency of interconnected micropatterned surfaces is explored over an extended duration, with a focus on their resilience during a 90‐day water‐immersion test. Initially, the microstructure surfaces exhibit high water repellency, a characteristic of the Cassie–Baxter state. However, subsequent detailed temporal analyses reveal varying responses depending on the structural topology. The interconnected micropatterned surfaces exhibit remarkable long‐term resistance to water; this is attributed to the formation of large and stable air pockets enabled by their unique microcavity structures. In comparison, hierarchical microcavity surfaces with micropillars exhibit a notable decrease in water repellency, as evidenced by reduced contact angles, suggesting a transition to a wetting state owing to the emergence of surface hydrophilicity during long‐term water exposure. This study demonstrates the importance of stable air‐pocket effects, particularly in applications where the long‐term stability of liquid repellency is critical, and suggests the role of interconnected structures in maintaining water repellency over time.

In the rapidly advancing field of electronics, there is a growing demand for devices to be miniaturized with high-resolution patterns and compact, straightforward configurations, all while maintaining cost competitiveness. Precision patterning of conductive nano ink based on inexpensive metals offers an effective solution. This technique has proven compatibility with numerous integrated electronics. However, conventional patterning techniques face difficulties achieving high resolution, uniform thickness, and compatibility with environments prone to oxidation. Here, we optimize the reverse offset printing process and its ink formulation for green manufacturing of high-quality, high-resolution conductive micropatterns. The oleate ligand on the surface of Cu nanoparticles (CuNPs) is replaced by polyvinylpyrrolidone, which is more suitable for the steric stabilization of CuNPs in eco-friendly, polar solvent. Then, in consideration of the reverse offset printing mechanism, solvents and additives are evaluated to prepare a reverse offset printable ink. By examining the change in printability according to the composition and process parameters, we determine the printable composition range and process conditions. High-quality CuNP micropatterns with a fine line width of 10 μm, narrow spacing, sharp edge definition, and high uniformity are achieved. Finally, the reverse offset printed CuNP micropatterns are successfully implemented in thermistor microarrays as a potential application.

Background and Objectives: Korean and traditional Chinese medicine state that pyrite is effective for fracture treatment, but supporting clinical data are limited. This systematic review aimed to investigate the therapeutic role of Chinese patent medicine containing pyrite (CPMP) in clinical treatment for fractures. Materials and Methods: Seven electronic databases were searched using the keywords “pyrite”, “pyritum”, and “zirantong” between inception and December 2022, yielding 29 published clinical studies. Randomized controlled trials that included CPMP were considered eligible regardless of the fracture type. Quality assessment and meta-analysis of the included RCTs were also performed. Results: Most studies showed high heterogeneity (I2 > 50%) and significant results (p < 0.05). Compared to the results of the control group, CPMP was more effective in terms of the primary outcome related to the efficacy rate, including the total effective rate, callus growth rate, bone union, and edema disappearance time (all p < 0.00001) and in terms of secondary outcomes related to pain reduction, namely pain intensity and pain disappearance time, than the control group (both p < 0.01). CPMP was more effective than the control group in terms of erythrocyte sedimentation rate (p < 0.01), hematocrit (p < 0.01), erythrocyte aggregation (p < 0.05), and plasma viscosity (p < 0.05). CPMP did not cause serious side effects, and the incidence of complications was significantly less than that in the control group. Conclusions: CPMP may be a safe and effective alternative treatment for fractures and may be beneficial in preventing postoperative complications, reducing pain, relieving symptoms, and accelerating healing.

Abstract Biological surfaces in plants are critical for controlling essential functions such as wettability, adhesion, and light management, which are linked to their adaptation, survival, and reproduction. Biomimetically patterned surfaces replicating the microstructures of plant surfaces have become an emerging tool for understanding plant–environment interactions. In this study, we developed a two-step micro-replication platform to mimic the microstructure of seed surfaces and demonstrated that this initial platform can be used to study seed surface–environment interactions. The two-step process involved the extraction of a simplified seed surface model from real seeds and micro-replication of the simplified seed surface model using nanoimprint lithography. Using Allium seeds collected from Mongolia and Central Asia as the model system, we studied the wettability of biological and synthetic seed surfaces. We could independently control the material properties of a synthetic seed surface while maintaining the microstructures and, thereby, provide clear evidence that Allium seed surfaces were highly wettable owing to the high surface energy in the epidermal material rather than a microstructural effect. We expect that this platform can facilitate study of the independent effect of microstructure on the interaction of seed surfaces with their surroundings and contribute to research on the evolution of plant–environment interactions.

Functional films with hydrophobic, oleophobic, anti-fouling, anti-icing, anti-bacterial and low reflectance properties can be produced by patterning nano- or micro-structures on films via nano imprint lithography. Here, an omni-phobic surface showing both hydrophobicity and oleophobicity was obtained without chemical surface treatment by increasing the surface roughness and deforming the pattern morphology using only nano imprint lithography and the oxygen-inhibited curing properties of polyurethane acrylate (PUA) resin. A tulip-shaped pattern imprinting process was designed in which microscale patterns were fabricated using a porous polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mold with high oxygen transmission. During ultraviolet (UV) curing, a curing inhibiting layer was formed by reaction with oxygen. Next, a PDMS pad was used for the pressurized curing of the curing inhibition layer to modify the micro scale structures. Finally, final curing of the deformed pattern was performed using ultra high-power UV light. The deformation of the pattern into tulip-like shapes with increased surface roughness was confirmed by microscopy, and contact angle measurement was performed to confirm omni-phobicity. The final cured imprinted samples showed water and oil contact angles reaching 169.2° and 115°, respectively; thus, the omni-phobic surface could be demonstrated by a tulip-shaped pattern imprinting process.
