Using the Monte Carlo code SEDONA, multiband photometry and spectra are calculated for supernovae derived from stripped helium stars with presupernova masses of 2.2 to 10.0 M o˙. The models are representative of evolution in close binaries and have previously been exploded using a parameterized one-dimensional model for neutrino transport. A subset, those with presupernova masses in the range of 2.2-5.6 M o˙, have many properties in common with observed Type Ib and Ic supernovae, including a median ejected mass near 2 M o˙, explosion energies near 1 1051 erg, typical 56Ni masses of 0.07-0.09 M o˙, peak times of about 20 days, and a narrow range for the V - R color index 10 days post-V-maximum near 0.3 mag. The median peak bolometric luminosity, near 1042.3 erg s-1, is fainter, however, than several observational tabulations, and the brightest explosion has a bolometric luminosity of only 1042.50 erg s-1. The brightest absolute B, V, and R magnitudes at peak are -17.2, -17.8, and -18.0. These limits are fainter than some allegedly typical Type Ib and Ic supernovae and could reflect problems in our models or in the observational analysis. Helium stars with lower and higher masses also produce interesting transients that may have been observed, including fast, faint, blue transients and long, red, faint Type Ic supernovae. New models are specifically presented for SN 2007Y, SN 2007gr, SN 2009jf, LSQ 13abf, SN 2008D, and SN 2010X.

Binary population synthesis (BPS) employs prescriptions to predict final fates, explosion or implosion, and remnant masses based on one or two stellar parameters at the evolutionary cutoff imposed by the code, usually at or near central carbon ignition. In doing this, BPS disregards the integral role late-stage evolution plays in determining the final fate, remnant type, and remnant mass within the neutrino-driven explosion paradigm. To highlight differences between a popular prescription, which relies only on the core and final stellar mass and emerging methods, which rely on a star's presupernova core structure, we generate a series of compact object distributions using three different methods for a sample population of single and binary stars computed in BPASS. The first method estimates remnant mass based on a star's carbon–oxygen (CO) core mass and final total mass. The second method uses the presupernova core structure based on recent bare CO-core models combined with a parameterized explosion criterion to first determine final fate and remnant type, then remnant mass. The third method associates presupernova helium-core masses with remnant masses determined from public explosion models which rely implicitly on core structure. We find that the core-/final mass-based prescription favours lower mass remnants, including a large population of mass gap black holes, and predicts neutron star masses which span a wide range, whereas the structure-based prescriptions favour slightly higher mass remnants, mass gap black holes only as low as 3.5 M⊙, and predict NS mass distributions which cluster in a narrow range. We present a set of nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium steady-state calculations of radiative transfer for one-year-old Type II supernovae (SNe) starting from state-of-the-art explosion models computed with detailed nucleosynthesis. This grid covers single-star progenitors with initial masses between 9 and 29 M⊙, all evolved with the code KEPLER at solar metallicity and ignoring rotation. The [O I] λλ 6300, 6364 line flux generally grows with progenitor mass, and Hα exhibits an equally strong and opposite trend. The [Ca II] λλ 7291, 7323 strength increases at low 56Ni mass, at low explosion energy, or with clumping. This Ca II doublet, which forms primarily in the explosively produced Si/S zones, depends little on the progenitor mass but may strengthen if Ca+ dominates in the H-rich emitting zones or if Ca is abundant in the O-rich zones. Indeed, Si–O shell merging prior to core collapse may boost the Ca II doublet at the expense of the O I doublet, and may thus mimic the metal line strengths of a lower-mass progenitor. We find that the 56Ni bubble effect has a weak impact, probably because it is too weak to induce much of an ionization shift in the various emitting zones. Our simulations compare favorably to observed SNe II, including SN 2008bk (e.g., the 9 M⊙ model), SN 2012aw (12 M⊙ model), SN 1987A (15 M⊙ model), or SN 2015bs (25 M⊙ model with no Si–O shell merging). SNe II with narrow lines and a low 56Ni mass are well matched by the weak explosion of 9–11 M⊙ progenitors. The nebular-phase spectra of standard SNe II can be explained with progenitors in the mass range 12–15 M⊙, with one notable exception for SN 2015bs. In the intermediate mass range, these mass estimates may increase by a few M⊙, with allowance for clumping of the O-rich material or CO molecular cooling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ASASSN-18am/SN 2018gk is a newly discovered member of the rare group of luminous, hydrogen-rich supernovae (SNe) with a peak absolute magnitude of MV ≈ −20 mag that is in between normal core-collapse SNe and superluminous SNe. These SNe show no prominent spectroscopic signatures of ejecta interacting with circumstellar material (CSM), and their powering mechanism is debated. ASASSN-18am declines extremely rapidly for a Type II SN, with a photospheric-phase decline rate of ∼6.0 mag (100 d)−1. Owing to the weakening of H  i and the appearance of He  i in its later phases, ASASSN-18am is spectroscopically a Type IIb SN with a partially stripped envelope. However, its photometric and spectroscopic evolution shows significant differences from typical SNe IIb. Using a radiative diffusion model, we find that the light curve requires a high synthesized 56Ni mass |$M_{\rm Ni} \sim 0.4\, \rm {M_{\odot }}$| and ejecta with high kinetic energy E kin = (7–10) × 1051 erg. Introducing a magnetar central engine still requires |$M_{\rm Ni} \sim 0.3\, \rm {M_{\odot }}$| and E kin = 3 × 1051 erg. The high 56Ni mass is consistent with strong iron-group nebular lines in its spectra, which are also similar to several SNe Ic-BL with high 56Ni yields. The earliest spectrum shows 'flash ionization' features, from which we estimate a mass-loss rate of |$\dot{M}\approx 2\times 10^{-4} \, \rm \rm {M_{\odot }}\,yr^{-1}$|⁠. This wind density is too low to power the luminous light curve by ejecta–CSM interaction. We measure expansion velocities as high as 17 000  |$\rm {\, km\, s^{-1}}$| for Hα, which is remarkably high compared to other SNe II. We estimate an oxygen core mass of 1.8–3.4 M⊙ using the [O  i ] luminosity measured from a nebular-phase spectrum, implying a progenitor with a zero-age main-sequence mass of 19–26 M⊙. A crucial ingredient in population synthesis studies involving massive stars is the determination of whether they explode or implode in the end. While the final fate of a massive star is sensitive to its core structure at the onset of collapse, the existing binary population synthesis studies do not reach core collapse. Instead, they employ simple prescriptions to infer their final fates without knowing the pre-supernova core structure. We explore a potential solution to this problem by treating the carbon-oxygen (CO) core independently from the rest of the star. Using the implicit hydrodynamics code |$\mathrm{\tt {KEPLER}}$|⁠ , we have computed an extensive grid of 3496 CO-core models from a diverse range of initial conditions, each evolved from carbon ignition until core collapse. The final core structure, and thus the explodability, varies non-monotonically and depends sensitively on both the mass and initial composition of the CO core. Although bare CO cores are not perfect substitutes for cores embedded in massive stars, our models compare well both with |$\mathrm{\tt {MESA}}$|  and full hydrogenic and helium star calculations. Our results can be used to infer the pre-supernova core structures from population synthesis estimates of CO-core properties, thus to determine the final outcomes based on the results of modern neutrino-driven explosion simulations. The mass function for black holes and neutron stars at birth is explored for mass-losing helium stars. These should resemble, more closely than similar studies of single hydrogen-rich stars, the results of evolution in close binary systems. The effects of varying the mass-loss rate and metallicity are calculated using a simple semi-analytic approach to stellar evolution that is tuned to reproduce detailed numerical calculations. Though the total fraction of black holes made in stellar collapse events varies considerably with metallicity, mass-loss rate, and mass cutoff, from 5% to 30%, the shapes of their birth functions are very similar for all reasonable variations in these quantities. Median neutron star masses are in the range 1.32–1.37 regardless of metallicity. The median black hole mass for solar metallicity is typically 8–9 if only initial helium cores below 40 (ZAMS mass less than 80) are counted, and 9–13 , in most cases, if helium cores with initial masses up to 150 (ZAMS mass less than 300) contribute. As long as the mass-loss rate as a function of mass exhibits no strong nonlinearities, the black hole birth function from 15 to 35 has a slope that depends mostly on the initial mass function for main-sequence stars. These findings imply the possibility of constraining the initial mass function and the properties of mass loss in close binaries using ongoing measurements of gravitational-wave radiation. Recent studies on direct imaging of Type II core-collapse supernova progenitors indicate a possible threshold around M ZAMS ∼ 16–20 M⊙, where red supergiants (RSG) with larger birth masses do not appear to result in supernova explosions and instead implode directly into a black hole. In this study, we argue that it is not a coincidence that this threshold closely matches the critical transition of central carbon burning in massive stars from the convective to radiative regime. In lighter stars, carbon burns convectively in the centre and result in compact final pre-supernova cores that are likely to result in explosions, while in heavier stars after the transition, it burns as a radiative flame and the stellar cores become significantly harder to explode. Using the |$\rm {\small {kepler}}$| code we demonstrate the sensitivity of this transition to the rate of 12C(α, γ)16O reaction and the overshoot mixing efficiency, and we argue that the upper mass limit of exploding RSG could be employed to constrain uncertain input physics of massive stellar evolution calculations. The initial mass corresponding to the central carbon burning transition range from 14 to 26 M⊙ in recently published models from various groups and codes, and only a few are in agreement with the estimates inferred from direct imaging studies. Multiple lines of evidence support a connection between hydrogen-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) and long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Both classes of events require a powerful central energy source, usually attributed to a millisecond magnetar or an accreting black hole. The GRB-SLSN link raises several theoretical questions: What distinguishes the engines responsible for these different phenomena? Can a single engine power both a GRB and a luminous SN in the same event? We propose a unifying model for magnetar thermalization and jet formation: misalignment between the rotation () and magnetic dipole (μ) axes dissipates a fraction of the spin-down power by reconnection in the striped equatorial wind, providing a guaranteed source of 'thermal' emission to power the supernova. The remaining unthermalized power energizes a relativistic jet. We show that even weak relativistic jets of luminosity ∼1046 erg s-1 can escape the expanding SN ejecta implying that escaping relativistic jets may accompany many SLSNe. We calculate the observational signature of these jets. We show that they may produce transient ultraviolet (UV) cocoon emission lasting a few hours when the jet breaks out of the ejecta surface. A longer lived optical/UV signal may originate from a mildly relativistic wind driven from the interface between the jet and the ejecta walls, which could explain the secondary early-time maximum observed in some SLSNe light curves, such as LSQ14bdq. Our scenario predicts a population of GRB from on-axis jets with extremely long durations, potentially similar to the population of 'jetted-tidal disruption events', in coincidence with a small subset of SLSNe. We investigate the properties of Type IIP supernovae that are dominantly powered by the rotational kinetic energy of the newly born neutron star. While the spin-down of a magnetar has previously been proposed as a viable energy source in the context of superluminous supernovae, we show that a similar mechanism could produce both normal and peculiar Type IIP supernova light curves from red supergiant progenitors for a range of initial spin periods and equivalent dipole magnetic field strengths. Although the formation channel for such magnetars in a typical red supergiant progenitor is unknown, it is tantalizing that this proof of concept model is capable of producing ordinary Type IIP light-curve properties, perhaps implying that rotation rate and magnetic field strength may play important roles in some ordinary looking Type IIP supernova explosions. We have observed the oxygen-rich SNR 1E 0102.2-7219 with the integral field spectrograph WiFeS at Siding Spring Observatory and discovered sulfur-rich ejecta for the first time. Follow-up deep DDT observations with MUSE on the VLT (8100 s on source) reaching down to a noise level of ~5 × 10−20ergs−1cm−2Å−1spaxel−1 have led to the additional discovery of fast-moving hydrogen as well as argon-rich and chlorine-rich material. The detection of fast-moving hydrogen knots challenges the interpretation that the progenitor of 1E 0102 was a compact core of a Wolf-Rayet star that had shed its entire envelope. In addition to the detection of hydrogen and the products of oxygen-burning, this unprecedented sharp (0.2″ spaxel size at ~0.7″ seeing) and deep MUSE view of an oxygen-rich SNR in the Magellanic Clouds reveals further exciting discoveries, including [Fe xiv]λ5303 and [Fe xi]λ7892 emission, which we associate with the forward shock. The success or failure of the neutrino-transport mechanism for producing a supernova in an evolved massive star is known to be sensitive not only to the mass of the iron core that collapses, but also to the density gradient in the silicon and oxygen shells surrounding that core. Here we study the systematics of a presupernova core's “compactness” as a function of the mass of the star and the physics used in its calculation. Fine-meshed surveys of presupernova evolution are calculated for stars from 15 to 65 M☼. The metallicity and the efficiency of semiconvection and overshoot mixing are both varied and bare carbon-oxygen cores are explored as well as full hydrogenic stars. Two different codes, KEPLER and MESA, are used for the study. A complex interplay of carbon and oxygen burning, especially in shells, can cause rapid variations in the compactness for stars of very nearly the same mass. On larger scales, the distribution of compactness with main sequence mass is found to be robustly non-monotonic, implying islands of “explodabilty,” particularly around 8-20 M☼ and 25-30 M☼.
