Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), known as "forever chemicals," are a growing concern in the sphere of human and environmental health. In response, rapid, reproducible, and inexpensive methods for PFAS detection in the environment and home water supplies are needed. We have developed a simple and inexpensive perfluoroalkyl acid detection method based on an electrically read lateral flow assay (e-LFA). Our method employs a fluorous surfactant formulation with undoped polyaniline (F-PANI) fabricated to create test lines for the lateral flow assay. In perfluoroalkyl acid sensing studies, an increase in conductivity of the F-PANI film is caused by acidification and doping of PANI. A conductivity enhancement by 104-fold can be produced by this method, and we demonstrate a limit of detection for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) of 400 ppt and perfluorobutanoic acid of 200 ppt. Membrane‐based gas separations are crucial for an energy‐efficient future. However, it is difficult to develop membrane materials that are high‐performing, scalable, and processable. Microporous organic polymers (MOPs) combine benefits for gas sieving and solution processability. Herein, we report membrane performance for a new family of microporous poly(arylene ether)s (PAEs) synthesized via Pd‐catalyzed C−O coupling reactions. The scaffold of these microporous polymers consists of rigid three‐dimensional triptycene and stereocontorted spirobifluorene, endowing these polymers with micropore dimensions attractive for gas separations. This robust PAE synthesis method allows for the facile incorporation of functionalities and branched linkers for control of permeation and mechanical properties. A solution‐processable branched polymer was formed into a submicron film and characterized for permeance and selectivity, revealing lab data that rivals property sets of commercially available membranes already optimized for much thinner configurations. Moreover, the branching motif endows these materials with outstanding plasticization resistance, and their microporous structure and stability enables benefits from competitive sorption, increasing CO2/CH4 and (H2S+CO2)/CH4 selectivity in mixture tests as predicted by the dual‐mode sorption model. The structural tunability, stability, and ease‐of‐processing suggest that this new platform of microporous polymers provides generalizable design strategies to form MOPs at scale for demanding gas separations in industry. The ubiquitous presence of per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in aqueous environments has aroused societal concern. Nonetheless, effective sensing technologies for continuous monitoring of PFAS within water distribution infrastructures currently do not exist. Herein, we describe a ratiometric sensing approach to selectively detect aqueous perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) at concentrations of μg ⋅ L−1. Our method relies on the excitonic transport in a highly fluorinated poly(p‐phenylene ethynylene) to amplify a ratiometric emission signal modulated by an embedded fluorinated squaraine dye. The electronic coupling between the polymer and dye occurs through overlap of π‐orbitals and is designed such that energy transfer is dominated by an electron‐exchange (Dexter) mechanism. Exposure to aqueous solutions of PFAS perturbs the orbital interactions between the squaraine dye and the polymer backbone, thereby diminishing the efficiency of the energy transfer and producing a "polymer‐ON/dye‐OFF" response. These polymer/dye combinations were evaluated in spin‐coated films and polymer nanoparticles and were able to selectively detect PFAS at concentrations of ca. 150 ppb and ca. 50 ppb, respectively. Empowered by advanced on-board sensors, high-performance optics packages and ever-increasing computational power, smartphones have democratized data generation, collection, and analysis. Building on this capacity, many platforms have been developed to enable its use as an optical sensing platform for colorimetric and fluorescence measurements. In this paper, we report the ability to enable a smartphone to perform laboratory quality time-resolved analysis of luminescent samples via the exploitation of the rolling shutter mechanism of the native CMOS imager. We achieve this by leveraging the smartphone's standard image capture applications, commercially available image analysis software, and housing the device within a UV-LED containing case. These low-cost modifications enable us to demonstrate the smartphone's analytical potential by performing tasks ranging from authentication and encryption to the interrogation of packaging, compounds, and physical phenomena. This approach underscores the power of repurposing existing technologies to extend the reach and inclusivity of scientific exploration, opening new avenues for data collection and analysis. Exceeding the energy density of lithium−carbon monofluoride (Li−CFx), today's leading Li primary battery, requires an increase in fluorine content (x) that determines the theoretical capacity available from C−F bond reduction. However, high F‐content carbon materials face challenges such as poor electronic conductivity, low reduction potentials (<1.3 V versus Li/Li+), and/or low C−F bond utilization. This study investigates molecular structural design principles for a new class of high F‐content fluoroalkyl‐aromatic catholytes that address these challenges. A polarizable conjugated system—an aromatic ring with an alkene linker—functions as electron acceptor and redox initiator, enabling a cascade defluorination of an adjacent perfluoroalkyl chain (RF = −CnF2n+1). The synthesized molecules successfully overcome premature deactivation observed in previously studied catholytes and achieve close‐to‐full defluorination (up to 15/17 available F), yielding high gravimetric capacities of 748 mAh g−1fluoroalkyl‐aromatic and energies of 1785 Wh kg−1fluoroalkyl‐aromatic. The voltage compatibility between fluoroalkyl‐aromatics and CFx enables design of hybrid cells containing C−F redox activity in both solid and liquid phases, with a projected enhancement of Li–CFx gravimetric energy by 35% based on weight of electrodes+electrolyte. With further improvement of cathode architecture, these "liquid CFx" analogues are strong candidates for exceeding the energy limitations of today's primary chemistries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The temperature-sensitive miscibility of hydrocarbon, silicone and fluorocarbon liquids is used to establish a one-step method of making three- and four-phase complex emulsions with highly controllable morphologies that can be alternated between encapsulated and Janus configurations by varying the balance of interfacial tensions. This paper describes a one-step method that exploits the temperature-sensitive miscibility of hydrocarbon, silicone and fluorocarbon liquids to make three- and four-phase complex emulsions with highly controllable morphologies. The geometry of the emulsions can be accurately tuned between encapsulated and Janus configurations by varying the balance of interfacial tensions controlled through mixtures of surfactant or by stimuli such as light or pH. The ability to reversibly 'present' and 'hide' specific liquid-liquid interfaces within the droplet and tune the droplet morphology offers interesting practical possibilities. Emulsification is a powerful, well-known technique for mixing and dispersing immiscible components within a continuous liquid phase. Consequently, emulsions are central components of medicine, food and performance materials. Complex emulsions, including Janus droplets (that is, droplets with faces of differing chemistries) and multiple emulsions, are of increasing importance.sup.1 in pharmaceuticals and medical diagnostics.sup.2, in the fabrication of microparticles and capsules.sup.3,4,5 for food.sup.6, in chemical separations.sup.7, in cosmetics.sup.8, and in dynamic optics.sup.9. Because complex emulsion properties and functions are related to the droplet geometry and composition, the development of rapid, simple fabrication approaches allowing precise control over the droplets' physical and chemical characteristics is critical. Significant advances in the fabrication of complex emulsions have been made using a number of procedures, ranging from large-scale, less precise techniques that give compositional heterogeneity using high-shear mixers and membranes.sup.10, to small-volume but more precise microfluidic methods.sup.11,12. However, such approaches have yet to create droplet morphologies that can be controllably altered after emulsification. Reconfigurable complex liquids potentially have great utility as dynamically tunable materials. Here we describe an approach to the one-step fabrication of three- and four-phase complex emulsions with highly controllable and reconfigurable morphologies. The fabrication makes use of the temperature-sensitive miscibility of hydrocarbon, silicone and fluorocarbon liquids, and is applied to both the microfluidic and the scalable batch production of complex droplets. We demonstrate that droplet geometries can be alternated between encapsulated and Janus configurations by varying the interfacial tensions using hydrocarbon and fluorinated surfactants including stimuli-responsive and cleavable surfactants. Cu(I) from tetrakis(acetonitrile)copper(I) hexafluorophosphate ([Cu(MeCN)4]PF6) was complexed with five structurally related phosphines containing N-heterocycles. The interactions between the resulting complexes and some N-nitrosamines were studied using X-ray crystallography as well as emission spectroscopy. Upon complexation, three phosphine ligands bridge two Cu(I) centers to give paddlewheel type structures that displayed a range of emission wavelengths spanning the visible region. N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) was shown to coordinate to one of the two copper centers in some of the paddlewheel complexes in the solid state and this interaction also quenches their emissions in solution. The influence of the weakly coordinating anion on crystal and spectroscopic properties of one of the paddlewheel complexes was also examined using tetrakis(acetonitrile)copper(I) perchlorate ([Cu (MeCN)4]ClO4) as an alternative Cu(I) source. Similarly, copper(II) perchlorate hexahydrate (Cu (ClO4)2·6H2O) was used for complexation to observe the impact of metal oxidation state on the two aforementioned properties. Lastly, the spectroscopic properties of the complex between Ph2P(1- Isoquinoline) and Cu(I) was shown to exhibit solvent dependence when the counterion is ClO4 -. These Cu(I) complexes are bench stable solids and may be useful materials for developing a fluorescence based detection method for N-nitrosamines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

1,4-Dithiin and its dibenzo-analogue, thianthrene, represent a class of non-aromatic, sulfur-rich heterocycles. Their unique properties, stemming from both their non-planar structures and reversible one- and two-electron oxidations, serve as primary motivators for their use in the development of new materials. The applications of 1,4-dithiins and thianthrenes are rich and diverse, having been used for energy storage and harvesting, and the synthesis of phosphorescent compounds and porous polymers, among other uses. This review offers first an overview of the properties of 1,4-dithiin and thianthrene. Next, we describe enabling synthetic methodology to access 1,4-dithiins and thianthrenes with various substitution patterns.
