High-fidelity controlled- Z ( C _Z ) gates are essential and mandatory to build a large-scale quantum computer. In neutral atoms, the strong dipole–dipole interactions between their Rydberg states make them one of the pioneering platforms to implement C _Z gates. Here we numerically investigate the optimized pulses to generate a high-fidelity Rydberg C _Z gate in a three-level ladder-type atomic system. By tuning the temporal shapes of Gaussian or segmented pulses, the populations on the intermediate excited states are shown to be suppressed within the symmetric gate operation protocol, which leads to a C _Z gate with a high Bell fidelity up to $99.92\%$ . These optimized pulses are robust to thermal fluctuations and the excitation field variations. Our results promise a high-fidelity and fast gate operation under amenable and controllable experimental parameters, which goes beyond the adiabatic operation regime under a finite blockade strength.

Using single-molecule visualization and manipulation, Chang et al. show that the eukaryotic Smc5/6 complex preferentially binds to and stabilizes ssDNA-dsDNA junctions, which could serve as the molecular basis for its diverse roles in genome maintenance.

Here the authors used single-molecule imaging and manipulation to study the mechanical effects of transcription factor Sox2 co-condensation with DNA and chromatin. They found that Sox2 condensates exert a high level of mechanical stress on DNA, but this stress is dramatically attenuated by nucleosomes assembled on the DNA.

Breast cancer is the second-most common cancer and second-leading cause of cancer mortality in American women. The dysregulation of microRNAs (miRNAs) plays a key role in almost all cancers, including breast cancer. We comprehensively analyzed miRNA expression, global gene expression, and patient survival from the Cancer Genomes Atlas (TCGA) to identify clinically relevant miRNAs and their potential gene targets in breast tumors. In our analysis, we found that increased expression of 12 mature miRNAs-hsa-miR-320a, hsa-miR-361-5p, hsa-miR-103a-3p, hsa-miR-21-5p, hsa-miR-374b-5p, hsa-miR-140-3p, hsa-miR-25-3p, hsa-miR-651-5p, hsa-miR-200c-3p, hsa-miR-30a-5p, hsa-miR-30c-5p, and hsa-let-7i-5p -each predicted improved breast cancer survival. Of the 12 miRNAs, miR-320a, miR-361-5p, miR-21-5p, miR-103a-3p were selected for further analysis. By correlating global gene expression with miRNA expression and then employing miRNA target prediction analysis, we suggest that the four miRNAs may exert protective phenotypes by targeting breast oncogenes that contribute to patient survival. We propose that miR-320a targets the survival-associated genes RAD51, RRP1B, and TDG; miR-361-5p targets ARCN1; and miR-21-5p targets MSH2, RMND5A, STAG2, and UBE2D3. The results of our stringent bioinformatics approach for identifying clinically relevant miRNAs and their targets indicate that miR-320a, miR-361-5p, and miR-21-5p may contribute to breast cancer survival.

The present study experimentally investigates the effect of convergence angle of microchannel on two-phase flow and heat transfer during steam condensation. Three condensation regimes, from the inlet to the outlet, are identified: mist/annular flow, injection flow, and slug-bubbly flow. Flow pattern maps are constructed using superficial vapor and liquid velocities as the coordinates, wherein relatively distinct boundaries between the flow patterns can be identified. The experimental results show that the condensation heat flux increases with an increase in the convergence angle and/or the steam mass flux at a given coolant flow ratebut decreases with an increase in the coolant flow rate at a given steam mass flux. The results further demonstrate that the local condensation heat transfer coefficient in the mist/annular flow region is much higher than that in other condensation regimes. Moreover, the local condensation heat transfer coefficient in the mist/annular flow and injection flow region decreases with an increase in the convergence angle.

Host parasitism by Trichomonas vaginalis is complex and in part mediated by adherence to vaginal epithelial cells (VECs). Four trichomonad surface proteins bind VECs as adhesins, and AP65 is a major adhesin with sequence identity to an enzyme of the hydrogenosome organelle that is involved in energy generation. In order to perform genetic analysis and assess the role of AP65 in T. vaginalis adherence, we silenced expression of ap65 using antisense RNA. The gene for ap65 was inserted into the vector pBS- neo in sense and antisense orientations to generate plasmids pBS- neoS (S) and pBS- neoAS (AS), respectively. Trichomonads were then transfected with S and AS plasmids for selection of stable transfectants using Geneticin, and the presence of plasmid in transfectants was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction of the neo gene. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and Northern blot analysis showed decreased amounts of ap65 transcript in AS transfected parasites. Growth kinetics of the antisense-transfected and wild type organisms were similar, suggesting that silencing AP65 did not affect overall energy generation for growth. Immunoblot analysis using monoclonal antibody (mAb) to AP65 of AS transfectants showed decreased amounts of AP65 when compared to wild type or S transfectants. Not unexpectedly, this corresponded to decreased amounts of AP65 bound to VECs in a functional ligand assay. Reduction in parasite surface expression of AP65 was related to lower levels of adherence to VECs by AS-transfectants compared to control organisms. Antisense silencing of ap65 was not alleviated by growth of trichomonads in high iron, which up-regulates transcription of ap65. Our work reaffirms the role for AP65 as an adhesin, and in addition, we demonstrate antisense RNA gene silencing in T. vaginalis to study the contribution of specific genes in pathogenesis. We theoretically investigate the spectral property of a biphoton state from multiplexed thermal atomic ensembles. This biphoton state originates from the cascade emissions, which can be generated by two weak pump fields under four-wave mixing condition. Under this condition, a signal photon from the upper transition, chosen in a telecommunication bandwidth, can be generated along with a correlated idler photon from the lower infrared transition. We can spectrally shape the biphoton state by multiplexing the atomic ensembles with frequency-shifted emissions, where the entropy of entanglement can be analyzed via Schmidt decompositions. We find that this spectral entanglement increases when more vapor cells are multiplexed with correlated or anti-correlated signal and idler fields. The eigenvalues in Schmidt bases approach degenerate under this multiplexing scheme, and corresponding Schmidt numbers can be larger than the number of the multiplexed vapor cells, showing the enlarged entropy of entanglement and excess correlated modes in continuous frequency spaces. We also investigate the lowest entropy of entanglement allowed in the multiplexing scheme, which is preferential for generating a pure single photon source. This shows the potentiality to spectrally shape the biphoton source, where high-capacity spectral modes can be applied in long-distance quantum communication and multimode quantum information processing. We theoretically investigate the spectral property of biphoton state from the cascade emissions from a Doppler-broadened atomic ensemble. This biphoton state is spontaneously created in the four-wave-mixing process. The upper transition of the emissions lies in telecom bandwidth, which prevails in fiber-based quantum communication for low-loss transmission. We obtain the spectral function of the biphoton state in terms of superradiant decay rates of the lower transition, excitation pulse durations, and temperature of the medium. We quantify their frequency entanglement by Schmidt decomposition and find that more entangled source can be generated with longer excitation pulses, enhanced decay rates, and significant Doppler broadening. A minimally entangled biphoton source can also be located at some optimal temperature of the atoms. By tuning these parameters, this biphoton source allows spectral shaping of continuous frequency entanglement, which is useful in multimode long-distance quantum communication. Lead zirconate titanate (Pb1.1(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3) thin films of thickness 260 nm on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates were densified by 2.45 GHz microwave annealing. The PZT thin films were annealed at various annealing temperatures from 400 to 700 °C for 30 min. X-ray diffraction showed that the pyrochlore phase was transformed to the perovskite phase at 450 °C and the film was fully crystallized. The secondary (again pyrochlore) phase was observed in the PZT thin films, which were annealed above 550 °C. The surface morphologies were changed above 550 °C of the PZT thin films due to the secondary phase. Higher dielectric constant (er) and lower dielectric loss coercive field (Ec) were achieved for the 450 °C film than for the other annealed films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Citric acid is an organic acid extensively used in feed industry, and AZOMITE is a hydrated aluminosilicate compound rich in rare earth elements and trace mineral elements. This study investigated the supplemental effects of AZOMITE and citric acid individual or in combination on the growth performance, intestinal microbiota, morphology, digestive enzyme activity, serum indexes, and disease resistance of juvenile largemouth bass. Six diets were designed, including the control diet (CON) and the five additive-supplemented diets with the addition of 4 or 8 g/kg citric acid (CA4, CA8), 3 g/kg AZOMITE (A3), and their combined addition as 4 g/kg citric acid + 1.5 g/kg AZOMITE) (C4A1.5) and 8 g/kg citric acid + 3 g/kg AZOMITE (C8A3). Juvenile largemouth bass with initial body weight of 22.01 ± 0.09 g were fed the six diets for 56 days. The main problem of recycling aluminium scrap is the gradual accumulation of impurities, especially iron, which tend to form undesired intermetallic compounds that affect the integrity and the mechanical performance of the castings. In this paper, we aim to provide an overview on the topic of iron removal from aluminium melts through primary intermetallic precipitation and the progress made during the LiME Hub project to understand the process and to develop a more efficient procedure. We cover both thermodynamic analysis and experimental validation. We found that high shear melt conditioning technology enhances the typically slow nucleation and growth of the dense primary intermetallics, speeding up their sedimentation and allowing a faster removal of Fe from the melt by simple gravity sedimentation. It also promotes the formation of smaller and more compact Fe-rich intermetallics, allowing an increased volume fraction recovery and mitigating their effect of being present in the final castings. The technology is not limited to batch processing, with a 90% efficiency, but can also be applied to continuous melt treatment of aluminium scrap, with currently 60% efficiency, and could be combined with other solid–liquid separation techniques to increase the purification efficiency even more.

Objective: The study's objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Interdisciplinary Sensory-Enriched Early Intervention (ISEEI) group program for children with developmental delays., Method: We conducted a retrospective chart review of 63 children ages 18-36 mo who participated in ISEEI. We evaluated participants with the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development III (Bayley-III) and the Infant/Toddler Sensory Profile (ITSP) at enrollment and after 3-9 mo. We conducted a paired t test to examine changes in the Bayley-III between pre- and posttests., Results: At enrollment, 70% of children presented atypical scores in two or more areas of sensory processing in the ITSP. Results revealed that children with sensory processing difficulties demonstrated significant improvement in all areas of development except fine motor skills; children without sensory processing difficulties showed significant improvement in language and cognition., Conclusion: The ISEEI group program is an effective method to ameliorate developmental delays., (Copyright © 2016 by the American Occupational Therapy Association, Inc.)
