BackgroundThe mechanisms and outcomes in coronavirus disease (COVID-19)-associated stroke are unique from those of non-COVID-19 stroke.ObjectiveTo describe the efficacy and outcomes of acute revascularization of large vessel occlusion (LVO) in the setting of COVID-19 in an international cohort.MethodsWe conducted an international multicenter retrospective study of consecutively admitted patients with COVID-19 with concomitant acute LVO across 50 comprehensive stroke centers. Our control group constituted historical controls of patients presenting with LVO and receiving a mechanical thrombectomy between January 2018 and December 2020.ResultsThe total cohort was 575 patients with acute LVO; 194 patients had COVID-19 while 381 patients did not. Patients in the COVID-19 group were younger (62.5 vs 71.2; P < .001) and lacked vascular risk factors (49, 25.3% vs 54, 14.2%; P = .001). Modified thrombolysis in cerebral infarction 3 revascularization was less common in the COVID-19 group (74, 39.2% vs 252, 67.2%; P < .001). Poor functional outcome at discharge (defined as modified Ranklin Scale 3-6) was more common in the COVID-19 group (150, 79.8% vs 132, 66.7%; P = .004). COVID-19 was independently associated with a lower likelihood of achieving modified thrombolysis in cerebral infarction 3 (odds ratio [OR]: 0.4, 95% CI: 0.2-0.7; P < .001) and unfavorable outcomes (OR: 2.5, 95% CI: 1.4-4.5; P = .002).ConclusionCOVID-19 was an independent predictor of incomplete revascularization and poor outcomes in patients with stroke due to LVO. Patients with COVID-19 with LVO were younger, had fewer cerebrovascular risk factors, and suffered from higher morbidity/mortality rates.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the cross-cultural training (CCT) provided to European expatriate executives in New Zealand, and consequently add to the knowledge for human resource management in the Australasian region. Design/methodology/approach: The present qualitative research study is based on open-ended and in-depth interviews with 30 European expatriate executives who had been residing in New Zealand for the past year or more. Findings: The results indicate that at least some CCT was provided to all interviewees; however, the training content seemed to be strongly centered around professional work, with little focus on the culture of the host country. Moreover, there was no follow-up to the pre-departure CCT and very few expatriates in the sample received any training in New Zealand. Similarly, the family is considered a fundamental factor for the success of expatriates; however, in the sample, neither spouses nor children received any training before or after their arrival in New Zealand. Research limitations/implications: The research is limited by the sample small size. The study's inconclusive highlights the need for further research to explore the influences of local residents, colleagues and neighbors on expatriates' adjustment. Similarly, further studies are also required to ascertain the effectiveness of CCT in helping support expatriates' performance and adjustment in New Zealand. Practical implications: The present study suggests that opportunities do exist for multinational companies (MNCs) to better prepare their expatriates for assignments by integrating more effectively issues related to cultural awareness into their CCT. Specifically, experimental CCT methods that emphasize the host country's culture are most valuable. The CCT technique should be tailored to the cultural distance between the host nation and expatriates' country of origin and to the nature of their assignment. Originality/value: Given the existence of many MNCs in New Zealand, it is surprising that the issue of CCT in this context has received little research attention. The current study endeavors to address this gap. This paper hopes that the findings may also be useful for consultants and human resource managers in MNCs who are involved in preparing expatriates for foreign assignments in Australasia, especially New Zealand.

Objective: To evaluate the impact of introducing newly-designed warning labels in relation to the available conventional cigarette packs. Method: The quasi-experimental study was conducted at four co-educational academic institutions selected using cluster random sampling technique in Gulshan-e-Iqbal town of Karachi from September 2016 to October 2017. The respondents, aged 16-24 years, were exposed with an experimental condition using five graphic cards; each comprising of two separate labels; label 1 being a cigarette pack currently rotated, and label 2 being the newly designed graphic and text warning label. Each participant responded over efficacy measures for each label separately. The difference in the efficacy scores between the two labels was assessed using repeated measure ANOVA with Bonferroni correction in analysis. Results: Of the 388 students, 256(66%) were males and 132(34%) were females. The overall mean age was 18±2.76 years. Also, 188(48.5%) subjects were studying in higher secondary, 179(46.1%) undergraduate and 21(5.4%) postgraduate levels. Of them, 104(26.8%) were ever-smokers and 284(73.2%) reported to be never-smokers. In the newly-designed warning label elements of ‘poverty’ and ‘not to start smoking’ in the current cigarette pack were significant (p=0.006). Non-smoking males perceived newly-designed label element ‘dead person’ as fear-arousing (p=0.045), while non-smoking females considered ‘look after family’ as efficacious (p=0.024). Conclusion: There was some evidence of variation in efficacy scores after stratifying on gender and smoking status. A more holistic approach is needed in this regard. Purpose: This qualitative study is grounded on in-depth interviews with 30 Western women self-initiated expatriate (SIEs) currently living and working in the UAE. When selecting the interviewees, the author used purposeful sampling to ensure a diverse sample of interviewees with respect to nationality, age, gender and occupation. Design/methodology/approach: The present study, drawing on boundary theory, aims to investigate the work–life balance (WLB) of Western women SIEs regarding how these women construct and manage the borders between the non-work and work lives in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Findings: The results demonstrate that women SIEs experience conflicts and enrichment during overseas employment. Both directions – the impact flowing from working life to personal life and vice versa – were significant. Different career and life phases appeared to be crucial to these experiences. The study also found that some women SIEs in the UAE experience high pressure in the WLB approaches, which are primarily impacted by the specific work–life environment in the UAE. Mostly, work–life boundaries are culturally and socially induced. Hence, many women SIEs encounter disparities between the robust work–life separations in the home country compared to the host country; women SIEs, therefore, need to relax the boundaries to adapt to the competitive work–life environment in the UAE. Originality/value: The present study contributes to research on work–life boundary management approaches in local settings, such as UAE, by analyzing cross-cultural and individual dimensions. Moreover, although women are still a minority among SIEs, the number of women is increasing. Background: Pakistan holds rank 8 th among the world countries in which high prevalence of tuberculosis (TB) is present. There is evidenced that up to 30% of close contacts of TB patients become infected and at least half of them progress to active disease. The aim of this study was to screen active contacts of sputum positive pulmonary TB (SS +ve PTB) among household contacts (HHCs) of TB patients in Karachi, Pakistan. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional study, which was conducted at chest clinics of Karachi. Total 750 HHCs were screened out of which 135 diagnosed smear positive TB patients was registered as index cases (ICs) from July 2012 till March 2013. Logistic regression analysis was carried out to estimate the odds ratio (OR) of different associated factors. Results: Prevalence among males (6.1%) compared with female (5.6%). The crude OR for age less than 15 years was 0.28 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.14-0.55). Eighty-eight HHCs (11.73%) were found to have SS +ve TB. Disease frequency was significantly higher in HHCs who were smokers (adjusted OR 36.41; 95% CI 12.07, 109.79), had age less than 12 years (adjusted OR 3.63; 95% CI 1.68, 7.86), and who lived in houses less than 80 square yards (adjusted OR 3.77; 95% CI 1.27, 6.05). Conclusion: The IC with positive sputum smear constitutes great risk for TB infection and disease in HHC. There is needed for contact tracing strategy in the high-risk population.

Nanoscale surface roughness has conventionally been induced by using complicated approaches; however, the homogeneity of superhydrophobic surface and hazardous pollutants continue to have existing challenges that require a solution. As a prospective solution, a novel bubbled-structured silica nanoparticle (SiO2) decorated electrospun polyurethane (PU) nanofibrous membrane (SiO2@PU-NFs) was prepared through a synchronized electrospinning and electrospraying process. The SiO2@PU-NFs nanofibrous membrane exhibited a nanoscale hierarchical surface roughness, attributed to excellent superhydrophobicity. The SiO2@PU-NFs membrane had an optimized fiber diameter of 394 ± 105 nm and was fabricated with a 25 kV applied voltage, 18% PU concentration, 20 cm spinning distance, and 6% SiO2 nanoparticles. The resulting membrane exhibited a water contact angle of 155.23°. Moreover, the developed membrane attributed excellent mechanical properties (14.22 MPa tensile modulus, 134.5% elongation, and 57.12 kPa hydrostatic pressure). The composite nanofibrous membrane also offered good breathability characteristics (with an air permeability of 70.63 mm/s and a water vapor permeability of 4167 g/m2/day). In addition, the proposed composite nanofibrous membrane showed a significant water/oil separation efficiency of 99.98, 99.97, and 99.98% against the water/xylene, water/n-hexane, and water/toluene mixers. When exposed to severe mechanical stresses and chemicals, the composite nanofibrous membrane sustained its superhydrophobic quality (WCA greater than 155.23°) up to 50 abrasion, bending, and stretching cycles. The global dissemination of internet technology and advances in it are facilitating female entrepreneurs to participate in online entrepreneurial activities by utilizing new business frameworks to achieve economies of scope and scale as they start to compete with the traditional entrepreneurs in the market. This research draws on two fields of scholarly research; "online businesses" and "female entrepreneurship" and, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that endeavors to provide an overview of female entrepreneurship in online businesses in the UAE. This study, which is based on a qualitative survey of 20 online businesses, owned and smanaged by females' in the UAE, investigates why females start their online businesses. The obvious picture emerging from this study is that with control over the number of hours they put in their online businesses and do not face the type of work to family conflict encountered by the female who own and manage traditional businesses outside of their homes. More precisely, the results of this study give indicative and exciting comprehensions into the challenges and impediments of female entrepreneurs in this fast-growing sector of the UAE economy. Of critical interest to researchers and policy makers, we investigate the challenges and impediments to success and the ways that female entrepreneurs in the UAE are successfully starting and expanding their online businesses. Background: Angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma (AFH) is a rare low-grade soft-tissue tumor that typically arises from the deep dermal and subcutaneous tissue of the extremities in children and young adults. Intracranial AFH is exceedingly rare, and only four cases of primary AFH tumors have been reported to date. Case Description: A 43-year-old male presented to our hospital with headaches, vision changes, and a known brain tumor suspected to be an atypical meningioma. After undergoing craniotomy for resection of the mass, the immunomorphologic features of the resected tumor showed typical features of AFH with ESWR1 (exon7) - ATF1 (exon 5) fusion. Conclusion: AFH is a difficult tumor to diagnose with imaging and histologic studies. Thus, further knowledge is necessary - particularly of intracranial cases - to aid clinicians in its diagnosis and management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study is to investigate the challenges and experiences related to the cross-cultural adjustment of female, self-initiated expatriates (SIEs) from New Zealand in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This qualitative study involves twenty SIE women. This topic has not been explored in detail in previous studies and the sample represents a significant proportion of New Zealand expatriates in the UAE who are working for local, multinationals (MNCs) and government organisations. It is clear from the results, that some of the women's experiences in the UAE are not favourable. The feeling of living in a state of impasse was obvious in the accounts of some women. A number of key themes emerged from the analysis: vulnerability as a result of working as a westerner, a foreigner, in gendered workplaces; challenges associated with formalism and the collectivistic UAE culture; and challenges associated with social relationships and networking. Findings have theoretical and practical implications, which may be further investigated by the proposed avenues of future research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Distinct origins of the external carotid artery and the internal carotid artery (ICA) from the aortic arch have been rarely described, and represent an aberrant development of the aortic arches during fetal life. This anatomical variation is usually discovered incidentally; infrequently, an aneurysm of the cervical ICA might accompany this rare configuration. We describe one such case in a patient with Noonan syndrome who presented with pulsatile neck mass. Background: Man-in-the-barrel syndrome (MBS) is an uncommon clinical condition for which patients present with bilateral brachial diplegia but intact lower extremity strength. This syndrome is typically attributed to a cranial/cortical injury rather than a spinal pathology. Case Description: A 62-year-old diabetic male presented with bilateral upper extremity paresis attributed to a ventral cervical epidural abscess diagnosed on magnetic resonance imaging. Emergent cervical decompression resulted in slight improvement of upper extremity strength. However, he later expired due to sepsis and respiratory compromise. Conclusion: Establishing the correct diagnosis via clinical examination and proceeding with appropriate management of MBS attributed to a cervical epidural abscess is critical to achieve a good outcome.
