Abstract Intervention for social cognition could be key to improving social functioning in patients with schizophrenia. A first step towards its clinical implementation involves interviewing patients about their subjective difficulties with social cognition as they experience them in the real world. The present study focused on the clinical subtypes classified by the discrepancies between the subjective difficulties in social cognition and actual cognitive impairment. A total of 131 outpatients with schizophrenia and 68 healthy controls were included. Objective measurement of social cognition was performed using a test battery covering four representative domains, and subjective difficulties were determined by a questionnaire covering the same domains. A two-step cluster analysis explored the potential classification of social cognition in patients with schizophrenia. There was little correlation between the objective performance on social cognition tasks and subjective difficulties in social cognition. The analysis yielded three clusters: the low-impact group (low objective impairment and low subjective difficulties), the unaware group (high objective impairment but low subjective difficulties), and the perceptive group (moderate objective impairment and high subjective difficulties). Positive, negative, and general symptoms were more severe in the two groups that showed impaired performance on the social cognition tasks (i.e., the unaware and perceptive groups) than those in the low-impact group. Neurocognition and functional capacity were the lowest in the unaware group, and social functioning was the lowest in the perceptive group. Awareness about the clinical subtypes of social cognition could serve as a guidepost for providing individualized, targeted interventions.

IntroductionAberrant fixation and scan paths in visual searches have been repeatedly reported in schizophrenia. The frontal eye fields (FEF) and thalamus may be responsible for fixation and scan paths. These two regions are connected by superior thalamic radiation (STR) in humans. Studies have reported reduced fixation numbers and shortened scan path lengths in individuals with attenuated psychosis syndrome (APS) and schizophrenia. In this study, we hypothesized that STRs in the white matter fiber bundles of impairments underlie abnormalities in fixation and scan path length in individuals with APS.MethodsTwenty-one individuals with APS and 30 healthy controls participated in this study. All participants underwent diffusion tensor imaging, and fractional anisotropy (FA) values of the left and right STR were analyzed using the novel method TractSeg. The number of eye fixations (NEF), total eye scanning length (TESL), and mean eye scanning length (MESL), derived using the exploratory eye movement (EEM) test, were adopted to evaluate the fixation and scan path length. We compared the FA values of the bilateral STR and EEM parameters between the APS and healthy control groups. We investigated the correlation between bilateral STR and EEM parameters in the APS and healthy control groups.ResultsNEF, TESL, MESL, and the FA values of the left STR were significantly reduced in individuals with APS compared to healthy controls. The left STR FA value in the APS group was significantly positively correlated with the MESL (r = 0.567, p = 0.007). In addition, the right STR FA value of the APS group was significantly correlated with the TESL (r = 0.587, p = 0.005) and MESL (r = 0.756, p = 0.7×10-4).DiscussionThese results demonstrate that biological changes in the STR, which connects the thalamus and FEF, underlie abnormalities in fixation and scanning. Recently, aberrations in the thalamus–frontal connection have been shown to underlie the emergence of psychotic symptoms. STR impairment may be a part of the biological basis of APS in individuals with subthreshold psychotic symptoms.

Background The fast-growing migrant population in Japan and globally poses challenges in mental healthcare, yet research addressing migrants’ mental health treatment engagement remains limited.Objective This study examined language proficiency, demographic and clinical characteristics as predictors of early treatment discontinuation among migrants.Methods Electronic health record data from 196 adult migrants, identified from 14 511 patients who received mental health outpatient treatment during 2016 and 2019 at three central hospitals in the Tokyo-Yokohama metropolitan region of Japan, were used. We conducted multivariable regression models to identify predictors of early discontinuation within 3 months.Findings The study cohort (66% women, age range: 18–90 years, from 29 countries or regions) included 23% non-Japanese speakers. Japanese and non-Japanese speakers had similar discontinuation rates (26% vs 22%). Multivariable models revealed younger age (OR=0.97; 95% CI: 0.95, 0.99; p=0.016) and those with a primary diagnosis other than a schizophrenia spectrum disorder (OR=3.99; 95% CI: 1.36, 11.77; p=0.012) or a neurotic, stress-related and somatoform disorder (OR=2.79; 95% CI: 1.14, 6.84; p=0.025) had higher odds of early discontinuation. These effects were more pronounced among the Japanese speakers with significant language-by-age and language-by-diagnoses interactions.Conclusion Younger age and having a primary diagnosis other than a schizophrenia spectrum disorder or a neurotic, stress-related and somatoform disorder increased vulnerability for discontinuing mental health treatment early in Japanese-speaking migrants but not for migrants with limited Japanese proficiency.Clinical implications Understanding language needs within a context of mental health treatment should go beyond assumed or observed fluency. Unmet language needs might increase vulnerability for treatment disengagement among migrants. Targeted clinical efforts are crucial for enhancing early treatment engagement and informing health practices in Japan and countries with growing migrant populations.

Abstract The Great East Japan Earthquake, with a moment magnitude scale of 9.0M on March 11, 2011, caused huge tsunamis that altered aquatic communities in the nearshore ecosystems along the Pacific coastline of Sendai Bay, Japan. However, to understand the ecological implications of the tsunamis' impact, an assessment of the successive changes of the communities and their fate over time is essential. Therefore, we examined eight tidal flat communities of Sendai Bay with the aid of citizen volunteers over 9 years, and compared the microbenthic compositions to those before the earthquake. The results revealed that the differences in the community compositions caused by the tsunamis decreased from year to year and finally disappeared after 7 years except for one flat where the tsunamis largely changed the environmental conditions. The present study indicates that these tidal flat communities are regulated mainly by environmental conditions and are highly resilient to tsunami disturbance.

ObjectivesThere is a global movement to develop and implement community-based integrated mental health systems. The present study attempted to clarify the perceptions and attitudes of users and non-users of mental health services concerning mental illness and services in Japan.MethodsA new questionnaire was developed for this internet survey. Data from 500 outpatients with depression and 500 healthy subjects were sampled according to the demographics of the Japanese population.ResultsOver 90% of healthy subjects and over 70% of patients were unaware of the common age of onset or lifetime prevalence of mental illness. Over 90% of the healthy subjects and about 70% of the patients could not describe any services where they would feel comfortable discussing mental health problems. In both groups, “adolescents and young adults” were ranked first as a target population for mental health and illness policies. The top requirement for the integrated care systems was the promotion and awareness of correct knowledge of mental illness in both the healthy subjects and patients.ConclusionSocietal requirements could include disseminating correct knowledge, awareness-raising actions for society, and implementing services where people, especially young people, can easily consult and receive support in the community.

Abstract Background The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has recently become the most important issue in the world. Very few reports in Japan have examined the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on peripartum mental health. We examined the status of postpartum mental health before and during COVID-19 pandemic from a consecutive database in a metropolitan area of Japan. Methods The subjects were women who had completed a maternity health check-up at a core regional hospital in Yokohama during the period from April 1, 2017, to December 31, 2020. We collected the subjects’ scores for the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and the Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale (MIBS) at 1 month postpartum. The subjects were divided into four groups (three Before COVID-19 groups and a During COVID-19 group). MANOVA and post-hoc tests were used to determine mental health changes in the postpartum period among the four groups. Results The Before and During COVID-19 groups contained 2844 and 1095 mothers, respectively. There were no significant difference in the total scores of the EPDS and MIBS among the four groups. However, the EPDS items related to anxiety factors were significantly higher and the EPDS items related to anhedonia and depression factors (excluding thoughts of self-harm) were significantly lower in the During COVID-19 group. Conclusion The EPDS scores changed in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic. Anxiety, which represent hypervigilance, was significantly higher and anhedonia and depression were significantly lower in the During COVID-19 group. Our results may reflect COVID-19-related health concerns and a lack of social support caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

BackgroundSocial cognitive impairments adversely affect social functioning (e.g., employment status) in patients with schizophrenia. Although pharmacological interventions have been suggested to provide some benefits on social cognition, little information is available on the comparative efficacy of pharmacotherapy. Thus, the aim of this planned systematic review and network meta-analysis is to perform a quantitative comparison of the effects of various psychotropic drugs, including supplements, on social cognition disturbances of schizophrenia.MethodsThe literature search will be carried out using the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PsycINFO, ClinicalTrials.gov, and International Clinical Trials Registry Platform databases from inception onward. Randomized controlled trials that examined the efficacy of drugs in social cognitive disturbances will be included, based on the most recent studies and the broader literature than previously searched. This protocol defines a priori the methods that will be used for study selection, data collection, quality assessment, and statistical syntheses.DiscussionThe findings this work are expected to help promote the development of better therapeutics of social cognitive impairments in schizophrenia and related psychiatric conditions.Systematic Review Registration[www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero], identifier [CRD42021293224].

We have systematically investigated the effects of hydrogen annealing on Ni- and Al-contacted carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (CNTFETs), whose work functions have not been affected by hydrogen annealing. Measured results show that the electronic properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes are modified by hydrogen adsorption. The Ni-contacted CNTFETs, which initially showed metallic behavior, changed their p-FET behavior with a high on-current over 10 µA after hydrogen annealing. The on-current of the as-made p-FETs is much improved after hydrogen annealing. The Al-contacted CNTFETs, which initially showed metallic behavior, showed unipolar p-FET behavior after hydrogen annealing. We analyzed the energy band diagrams of the CNTFETs to explain experimental results, finding that the electron affinity and the bandgap of single-walled carbon nanotubes changed after hydrogen annealing. These results are consistent with previously reported ab initio calculations.

Many efforts are under way to control the structure of heterointerfaces in nanostructured composite materials for designing functionality and engineering application. However, the fabrication of high-quality heterointerfaces is challenging because the crystal/crystal interface is usually the most defective part of the nanocomposite materials. In this work, we show that fully dense insulator (MgO)/semiconductor(Mg2Si)/superconductor(MgB2) nanocomposites with atomically smooth and continuous interfaces, including epitaxial-like MgO/Mg2Si interfaces, are obtained by solid phase reaction between metallic magnesium and a borosilicate glass. The resulting nanocomposites exhibit a semiconductor-superconducting transition at 36K owing to the MgB2 nanograins surrounded by the MgO/Mg2Si matrix. This transition is followed by the intergrain phase-lock transition at ~24K due to the construction of Josephson-coupled network, eventually leading to a near-zero resistance state at 17 K. The method not only provides a simple process to fabricate dense nanocomposites with high-quality interfaces, but also enables to investigate the electric and magnetic properties of embedded superconducting nanograins with good intergrain coupling. We investigate the interaction between superconductivity and defect-induced d0 ferromagnetism using a composite consisting of MgB2 and MgO nanocrystals. The composite exhibits a ferromagnetic hysteresis behavior in the temperature region from 40 to 300 K. Defective MgO nanocrystals (~20 nm) embedded in the composite are considered to be responsible for the observed ferromagnetism. The zero field cool and field cool magnetization curves show that the superconducting transition occurs at Tc = 38.6K, in agreement with Tc of pure MgB2. In the temperature region from Tc to 0.9Tc (~35 K), the magnetization hysteresis curves show a superposition of ferromagnetic (F) and superconducting (S) signals. When the temperature of the system is decreased below 0.65Tc (~25 K), the S signals dominate over the F signals. The resulting magnetic hysteresis loops are highly asymmetric and the descending filed branch is nearly flat, as predicted in the case of surface pinning. At temperatures below 0.5Tc (~20 K), a sharp peak is developed near zero field in the magnetization hysteresis curves, implying an enhancement of superconducting vortex pinning. The observed pinning enhancement most likely results from magnetic pinning due to randomly distributed magnetic MgO grains, which yield the magnetic inhomogeneity and the related pinning potential in a length scale of ~100nm. Thus, the present ferromagnetic/superconducting composite provides an ideal model system that demonstrates the availability of d0 ferromagnetism as a source of magnetic potential for effective vortex pinning. It has been well documented that an oxygen divacancy center, or a twofold-coordinated Si center, in silica glass yields a singlet-to-singlet photoluminescence (PL) emission at 4.4 eV with a decay time of ~4 ns. Although the 4.4-eV PL band is interesting in terms of a deep-ultraviolet light emitter, the emission efficiency has been too low to be considered for a practical application. In this work, we show that a highly luminescent silica glass, with an internal quantum yield of 68% for the 4.4-eV PL band at room temperature, can be prepared when micrometer-sized silica powders are heat treated at ~1900 °C under inert gas atmosphere by using a high-frequency induction heating unit equipped with a graphite crucible. We also show that the intensity of the 4.4-eV emission in the thus prepared silica glass exhibits an irreversible temperature antiquenching behavior in the temperature region below ~320K during heating-cooling cycles. The anomalous temperature dependencies of the 4.4-eV emission can be interpreted in terms of thermally activated trapping-detrapping processes of photoexcited electrons associated with deep trap states. Time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy has been employed to investigate the emission characteristics of oxygen-related defects in AlN in the temperature region from 77 to 500 K. Two PL components with different decay constants are observed in the near-ultraviolet to visible regions. One is the PL component with decay time of <10 ns and its peak position shifts to longer wavelengths from ∼350 to ∼500 nm with increasing temperature up to 500 K. This PL component is attributed to the radiative relaxation of photoexcited electrons from the band-edge states to the ground state of the oxygen-related emission centers. In the time region from tens to hundreds of nanoseconds, the second PL component emerges in the wavelength region from 300 to 400 nm. The spectral shape and the decay profiles are hardly dependent on temperature. This temperature-independent PL component most likely results from the transfer of photoexcited electrons from the band-edge states to the localized excited state of the oxygen-related emission centers. These results provide a detailed insight into the radiative relaxation processes of the oxygen-related defect centers in AlN immediately after the photoexcitation process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research on semiconductor nanowires underlies the development of the miniaturization of laser devices with low cost and low energy consumption. In general, nanowire lasers are made of direct band gap semiconductors, e.g., GaN, ZnO and CdS, and their band-edge emissions are used to achieve optically pumped laser emission. In addition to the existing class of nanowire lasers, we here show that air-annealed micrometer-sized MgO cubic crystals with well-defined facets exhibit room-temperature stimulated emission at 394 nm under pulsed laser pumping at ~350 nm. Surface midgap states are assumed to be responsible for the excitation and emission processes. The present findings will not only provide opportunities for the development of miniaturized lasers composed of insulating oxides, but will also open up functionality in various families of cubic crystalline materials. Since the seminal observation of room-temperature laser emission from ZnO thin films and nanowires, numerous attempts have been carried out for detailed understanding of the lasing mechanism in ZnO. In spite of the extensive efforts performed over the last decades, the origin of optical gain at room temperature is still a matter of considerable discussion. In this work, we show that a ZnO film consisting of well-packed micrometer-sized ZnO crystals exhibits purely excitonic lasing at room temperature without showing any symptoms of electron-hole plasma emission, even under optical excitation more than 25 times above the excitonic lasing threshold. The lasing mechanism is shifted from the exciton-exciton scattering to the exciton-electron scattering with increasing temperature from 3 to 150 K. The exciton-electron scattering process continues to exist with further increasing temperature from 150 to 300 K. Thus, we present distinct experimental evidence that the room-temperature excitonic lasing is achieved not by exciton-exciton scattering, as has been generally believed, but by exciton-electron scattering. We also argue that the long carrier diffusion length and the low optical loss nature of the micrometer-sized ZnO crystals, as compared to those of ZnO nanostructures, plays a key role in showing room-temperature excitonic lasing.
