Abstract The hair follicle stem cell niche is an immune-privileged microenvironment, characterized by reduced antigen presentation, thus shielding against permanent immune-mediated tissue damage. In this study, we demonstrated the protective role of hair follicle-specific epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) against scarring hair follicle destruction. Mechanistically, disruption of EGFR signaling generated a cell-intrinsic hypersensitivity within the JAK-STAT1 pathway, which, synergistically with interferon gamma expressing CD8 T-cell and NK-cell-mediated inflammation, compromised the stem cell niche. Hair follicle-specific genetic depletion of either JAK1/2 or STAT1 or therapeutic inhibition of JAK1/2 ameliorated the inflammation, restored skin barrier function and activated the residual stem cells to resume hair growth in mouse models of epidermal and hair follicle-specific EGFR deletion. Skin biopsies from EGFR inhibitor-treated and cicatricial alopecia patients revealed an active JAK-STAT1 signaling signature along with upregulation of antigen presentation and downregulation of key components of the EGFR pathway. Our findings offer molecular insights and highlight a mechanism-based therapeutic strategy for addressing chronic folliculitis associated with EGFR-inhibitor anti-cancer therapy and cicatricial alopecia.

Abstract Apnoeic oxygenation has experienced a resurgence in interest in critical care and perioperative medicine. However, its effect on cerebral oxygenation and factors influencing it, have not yet been investigated in detail. By using near-infrared spectroscopy, we intended to provide further evidence for the safety of apnoeic oxygenation and to increase our understanding of the association between cerebral perfusion, haemodynamic, respiratory and demographic factors. In this secondary analysis of a prospective randomized controlled noninferiority trial, we recruited 125 patients, who underwent surgery under general anaesthesia with neuromuscular blockade. Arterial blood samples were taken every 2 min for a total of 15 min under apnoeic oxygenation with 100% oxygen. Near-infrared spectroscopy and cardiac output were continuously measured. Statistical analysis was performed using uni- and multivariable statistics. Ninety-one complete data sets were analysed. In six patients the SpO2 fell below 92% (predefined study termination criterion). The significant average increase of cerebral oxygenation was 0.5%/min and 2.1 mmHg/min for the arterial pressure of carbon dioxide (paCO2). The median cardiac output increased significantly from 5.0 l/min (IQR 4.5–6.0) to 6.5 l/min (IQR 5.7–7.5). The most significant effect on cerebral oxygenation was exhibited by the variable paCO2 and non-specific patient factors, followed by cardiac output and paO2. Apnoeic oxygenation proves to have a high safety profile while significantly increasing cerebral oxygenation, paCO2 and cardiac output. In reverse, NIRS might act as a reliable clinical surrogate of paCO2 and cardiac output during stable arterial oxygenation.

OBJECTIVES: While the overall incidence and prevalence of diaphragmatic paralysis are unknown due to a wide variety of underlying causes, symptomatic patients experience a marked decline in their quality of life. The goal of this study was to measure the impact of diaphragm plication surgery on the quality of life in patients who were diagnosed with diaphragmatic paralysis. METHODS: A retrospective review of the medical records of 46 patients who underwent diaphragmatic plication surgery was performed. The review included patients who experienced unilateral and bilateral diaphragmatic paralysis. Patients who underwent repeat diaphragm plication surgery were also included in the study. Patients from the retrospective cohort were then contacted by telephone to answer the Dyspnea-12 (D-12) questionnaire. Patients were asked to recall the severity of their symptoms and quality of life preplication, 1-month postplication, and 6-month postplication. Severity of symptoms was ranked as either none, mild, moderate, or severe. Values were then assigned to each rank as follows: none = 0, mild = 1, moderate = 2, and severe = 3. Relative change and statistical significance were calculated with preplication measurements used as the baseline. Scores between preplication versus 1-month postplication and 6-month postplication were then compared by Student's paired t-test. All tests were two-sided and statistical significance was set at P < 0.05. RESULTS: Forty-six patients were included in the study, from which 21 answered the D-12 questionnaire. Average scores from each component of the D-12 questionnaire showed improvement in the severity of symptoms from preplication to 1-month postplication. The latter period was then followed by continued improvement in all areas when symptoms 6-month postplication were assessed. CONCLUSION: In patients with diaphragmatic paralysis, diaphragm plication was effective in reducing patients' symptoms while improving overall quality of life.

The utilization of the Solar Salt (60 wt%NaNO3/40 wt%KNO3) mixture as a Thermal Energy Storage (TES) medium is gaining importance due to its scalability and cost-effectiveness. However, the corrosion of metallic components presents a significant challenge. This study explores the intricate interplay between salt chemistry and its corrosivity, particularly at elevated temperatures exceeding the state-of-the-art bulk temperature 565 °C. The study manipulates salt decomposition by adjusting the oxygen partial pressure in the purge gas over Solar Salt and investigates the evolution of salt chemistry with and without the presence of steel. It analyzes the corrosion behavior of two types of stainless steel, AISI 316L and AISI 310, under different gas purging atmospheres. Furthermore, it employs a gold particle tracing technique to identify and monitor the formation and growth of the corrosion layer on the steel surface. The results reveal that nitrogen gas purging significantly enhances salt decomposition and its corrosivity over time. The presence of steel also influences salt decomposition depending on the purged gas atmosphere. In a nitrogen atmosphere, the presence of steel can increase the nitrite levels, while an air atmosphere results in an elevated concentration of oxide ions. In air, the AISI 310 alloy shows slightly better performance than AISI 316L. Both alloys experience substantial mass loss in the nitrogen-purged atmosphere. Interestingly, the presence of gold particles within the middle of the corrosion layer in the air purged atmosphere visually illustrates a counter diffusion involving various cations and anions across the corrosion layer.

Among the variety of energy storage techniques thermal energy storage (TES), based on molten salts, is already in use for the storage of heat in a gigawatt hour scale. At the time of writing virtually all TES in CSP utilize Solar Salt (60 wt-% NaNO3 and 40 wt-% KNO3) due to its competitively low price, low vapor pressure and non-toxicity. On the downside, the operating temperature is limited to 560 °C based on its thermal stability. However, increasing the operating temperature while maintaining thermal stability of the salt using techniques that are realizable in industrial scale remains one of the main challenges. Up to now this could only be achieved in a small scale by flushing with synthetic purge gas or sealing and pressurizing the system, maintaining the necessary gas atmosphere and shifting the chemical equilibrium to the nitrate side. Both methods are hardly realizable in an industrial scale. In this work we show a new strategy to stabilize Solar Salt at 620 °C by combining the gas-purged configuration and sealed system with maximum pressure of few tens of millibars in a 100 kg scale. The formed gas phase was within the expected range in terms of oxygen and nitrous gases. Additionally, the concentration of the nitrate and nitrite ions aligned well with salt systems with gas-purged atmosphere at 620 °C. We demonstrate the first experiments on long-term thermal stabilization (4000 h) of Solar Salt at 620 °C in a 100 kg technical-scale. These findings represent an important step in the development of modern storage systems.

ABSTRACT Cutibacterium avidum is an emerging causative agent of orthopedic device-related infections (ODRIs). There are no guidelines for the antimicrobial treatment of C. avidum ODRI, but oral rifampin is frequently used in combination with a fluoroquinolone following intravenous antibiotics. We describe the in vivo emergence of combined resistance to rifampin and levofloxacin in a C. avidum strain isolated from a patient with early-onset ODRI treated with debridement, antibiotic treatment, and implant retention (DAIR) using rifampin combined with levofloxacin as the oral treatment. Whole-genome sequencing of C. avidum isolates before and after antibiotic exposure confirmed strain identity and identified new mutations in rpoB and gyrA, leading to amino acid substitutions previously reported to be associated with resistance to rifampin (S446P) and fluoroquinolones (S101L), respectively, in other microbial agents, in the posttherapy isolate. Aside from the molecular insights reported here, this study highlights potential limitations of the combination of oral rifampin and levofloxacin in patients undergoing a DAIR procedure for C. avidum ODRI and the potential need to evaluate specific optimal therapy for emerging ODRI pathogens. IMPORTANCE In this study, we report for the first time the in vivo emergence of dual resistance to levofloxacin and rifampin in C. avidum isolated from a patient who received both antibiotics orally in the setting of a salvage debridement and implant retention of an ODRI. Aside from the molecular insights reported here, this study highlights potential limitations of the combination of oral rifampin and levofloxacin in patients undergoing these surgical procedures and the potential need to evaluate specific optimal therapy for emerging ODRI pathogens.

Summary: Introduction: This study aims to analyze whether autologous breast reconstruction as compared to expander/implant reconstruction has a higher risk of postoperative wound healing problems (WHPs) and thus potentially delays chemotherapy start. Methods: Between January 2012 and December 2019, a total of 64 women with NSME/SSME and autologous (Group1, n = 33) or expander/implant reconstruction (Group2, n = 31) and adjuvant chemotherapy were enrolled in this study conducted at Innsbruck Medical University Hospital. Immediate postoperative WHPs in each group were compared, and the time from operation to initiation of chemotherapy was analyzed. If the start of chemotherapy was postponed for more than six weeks postoperatively due to WHP, it was defined as delayed. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS and Fisher's exact test. The transverse myocutaneous gracilis (TMG) and the profunda artery perforator (PAP) flap are both safe choices for autologous breast reconstruction originating from the same donor region in the upper thigh. We aimed to compare the post-operative outcome regarding donor-site morbidity and quality of life. We included 18 patients who had undergone autologous breast reconstruction with a PAP flap (n = 27 flaps). Prospective evaluation of donor-site morbidity was performed by applying the same questionnaire that had already been established in a previous study evaluating TMG flap (n = 25 flaps) outcome, and results were compared. Comparison of the two patient groups showed equivalent results concerning patient-reported visibility of the donor-site scar and thigh symmetry. Still, the TMG group was significantly more satisfied with the scar (p = 0.015) and its position (p = 0.001). No difference was found regarding the ability to sit for prolonged periods. Donor-site wound complications were seen more frequently in the PAP group (29.6%) than in the TMG group (4.0%). Both groups expressed rather high satisfaction with their quality of life. Both flaps show minimal functional donor-site morbidity and high patient satisfaction. To minimize wound healing problems in PAP patients, thorough planning of the skin paddle is necessary.

Objective: The study objective was to determine the relationship between lung resection and the development of postoperative hiatal hernia. Methods: Preoperative and postoperative computed tomography imaging from 373 patients from the International Early Lung Cancer Action Program and the Initiative for Early Lung Cancer Research on Treatment were compared at a median of 31.1 months of follow-up after resection of clinical early-stage non–small cell lung cancer. Incidence of new hiatal hernia or changes to preexisting hernias were recorded and evaluated by patient demographics, surgical approach, extent of resection, and resection site. Results: New hiatal hernias were seen in 9.6% of patients after lung resection (5.6% after wedge or segmentectomy and 12.4% after lobectomy; P = .047). The median size of new hernias was 21 mm, and the most commonly associated resection site was the left lower lobe (24.2%; P = .04). Abstract High-index nanoparticles are known to support radiationless states called anapoles, where dipolar and toroidal moments interfere to inhibit scattering to the far field. In order to exploit the striking properties arising from these interference conditions in photonic integrated circuits, the particles must be driven in-plane via integrated waveguides. Here, we address the excitation of electric anapole states in silicon disks when excited on-chip at telecom wavelengths. In contrast to normal illumination, we find that the anapole condition—identified by a strong reduction of the scattering—does not overlap with the near-field energy maximum, an observation attributed to retardation effects. We experimentally verify the two distinct spectral regions in individual disks illuminated in-plane from closely placed waveguide terminations via far-field and near-field measurements. Our finding has important consequences concerning the use of anapole states and interference effects of other Mie-type resonances in high-index nanoparticles for building complex photonic integrated circuitry.

ABSTRACT: Objectives: Ceftazidime/avibactam (C/A) and ceftolozane/tazobactam (C/T) are two novel antibacterials with known efficacy against Gram-negative bacteria (GNB). We aimed to describe the efficacy and safety of surgical management combined with C/A or C/T treatment for bone and joint infections (BJIs). Methods: We conducted an observational, bicentric study of patients treated with C/A or C/T for a BJI between May 2016 and June 2019. Failure was defined as the need for unplanned additional antibiotic treatment or orthopaedic surgery, or death due to the BJI up to the patient's latest visit. Results: Overall, 15 patients were included. Nine patients were treated with C/A, mainly for polymicrobial BJI due to multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria (Enterobacteriaceae, n = 7). Six patients were male, the median age was 66 years and the median Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) was 5. It was the first septic episode at the site in 3/9 patients. The cure rate was 7/9 (median follow-up, 272 days). Two patients showed C/A-related confusion. Five patients were treated with C/T for BJI involving MDR Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Four patients were male, the median age was 53 years and the median CCI was 2. All patients had previous septic episodes at the infection site. The cure rate was 3/5 (median follow-up, 350 days). One patient was successfully treated by C/T then C/A for multistage spondylodiscitis. Conclusion: In our experience, C/A and C/T are two effective and safe options, even as salvage treatment for BJI due to MDR-GNB despite the absence of label, however more data are warranted.

Thermal energy storage (TES) based on molten salts has been identified as a key player in the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. Solar Salt, a mixture of NaNO3 (60 wt%) and KNO3 (40 wt%), is currently the most advanced heat transfer and storage material used in concentrating solar power (CSP) plants. Here, it is utilized to produce electricity via a Rankine cycle, with steam temperatures reaching 550 °C. The goal of this study is to increase the operating temperature of solar salt to over 600 °C, allowing it to be adapted for use in high-temperature Rankine cycles with steam temperatures greater than 600 °C. Yet, this goal is impaired by the lack of available thermodynamic data given the salt’s complex high-temperature decomposition and corrosion chemistry. The study explores the thermodynamics of the decomposition reactions in solar salt, with a focus on suppressing decomposition into corrosive oxide ions up to a temperature of 620 °C. The results provide a new understanding of the stabilization of solar salt at previously unexplored temperatures with effective utilization of gas management techniques.

Concentrated solar power (CSP) plants with thermal energy storage (TES) system are emerging as one kind of the most promising power plants in the future renewable energy system, since they can supply dispatchable and low-cost electricity with abundant but intermittent solar energy. In order to significantly reduce the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of the present commercial CSP plants, the next generation CSP technology with higher process temperature and energy efficiency is being developed. The TES system in the next generation CSP plants works with new TES materials at higher temperatures (> 565 °C) compared to that with the commercial nitrate salt mixtures. This paper reviews recent progress in research and development of the next generation CSP and TES technology. Emphasis is given on the advanced TES technology based on molten chloride salt mixtures such as MgCl2/NaCl/KCl which has similar thermo-physical properties as the commercial nitrate salt mixtures, higher thermal stability (> 800 °C), and lower costs (

Abstract Toll‐like receptor (TLR) stimulation induces innate immune responses involved in many inflammatory disorders including psoriasis. Although activation of the AP‐1 transcription factor complex is common in TLR signaling, the specific involvement and induced targets remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the role of c‐Jun/AP‐1 protein in skin inflammation following TLR7 activation using human psoriatic skin, dendritic cells (DC), and genetically engineered mouse models. We show that c‐Jun regulates CCL2 production in DCs leading to impaired recruitment of plasmacytoid DCs to inflamed skin after treatment with the TLR7/8 agonist Imiquimod. Furthermore, deletion of c‐Jun in DCs or chemical blockade of JNK/c‐Jun signaling ameliorates psoriasis‐like skin inflammation by reducing IL‐23 production in DCs. Importantly, the control of IL‐23 and CCL2 by c‐Jun is most pronounced in murine type‐2 DCs. CCL2 and IL‐23 expression co‐localize with c‐Jun in type‐2/inflammatory DCs in human psoriatic skin and JNK‐AP‐1 inhibition reduces the expression of these targets in TLR7/8‐stimulated human DCs. Therefore, c‐Jun/AP‐1 is a central driver of TLR7‐induced immune responses by DCs and JNK/c‐Jun a potential therapeutic target in psoriasis.

MgCl2–KCl–NaCl is a promising thermal energy storage (TES) material and heat transfer fluid (HTF) with high operating temperatures of >700°C for next-generation concentrating solar power (CSP) plants. One major challenge for future implementation of the molten chloride TES/HTF technology arises from the presence of some corrosive impurities, especially MgOHCl, a hydrolysis product of hydrated MgCl2. Even extremely low-concentration MgOHCl (tens of ppm O in weight) can cause unneglectable corrosion of commercial Fe–Cr–Ni alloys, which limits their service time as the structural materials in the molten chloride TES/HTF system. Thus, the chemical analysis and monitoring techniques of MgOHCl at the tens of ppm O level are vital for corrosion control. In this work, a chemical analysis technique based on direct titration and a high-precision automatic titrator was developed for an exact measurement of MgOHCl at the tens of ppm O level. It shows a standard deviation below 5 ppm O and an average error below 7 ppm O when the concentration of MgOHCl is 36 ppm O. Moreover, compared to other methods available in some literature reports, it can exclude the influence of co-existing MgO on the MgOHCl concentration measurement. This chemical analysis technique was used to calibrate the previously developed electrochemical method based on cyclic voltammetry (CV) to achieve reliable in situ monitoring of MgOHCl in the MgCl2–KCl–NaCl molten salt at a concentration as low as the tens of ppm O level. Abstract Topological on-chip photonics based on tailored photonic crystals (PhCs) that emulate quantum valley-Hall effects has recently gained widespread interest owing to its promise of robust unidirectional transport of classical and quantum information. We present a direct quantitative evaluation of topological photonic edge eigenstates and their transport properties in the telecom wavelength range using phase-resolved near-field optical microscopy. Experimentally visualizing the detailed sub-wavelength structure of these modes propagating along the interface between two topologically non-trivial mirror-symmetric lattices allows us to map their dispersion relation and differentiate between the contributions of several higher-order Bloch harmonics. Selective probing of forward- and backward-propagating modes as defined by their phase velocities enables direct quantification of topological robustness. Studying near-field propagation in controlled defects allows us to extract upper limits of topological protection in on-chip photonic systems in comparison with conventional PhC waveguides. We find that protected edge states are two orders of magnitude more robust than modes of conventional PhC waveguides. This direct experimental quantification of topological robustness comprises a crucial step toward the application of topologically protected guiding in integrated photonics, allowing for unprecedented error-free photonic quantum networks.

Digital federated platforms and data cooperatives for secure, trusted and sovereign data exchange will play a central role in the construction industry of the future. With the help of platforms, cooperatives and their novel value creation, the digital transformation and the degree of organization of the construction value chain can be taken to a new level of collaboration. The goal of this research project was to develop an experimental prototype for a federated innovation data platform along with a suitable exemplary use case. The prototype is to serve the construction industry as a demonstrator for further developments and form the basis for an innovation platform. It exemplifies how an overall concept is concretely implemented along one or more use cases that address high-priority industry pain points. This concept will create a blueprint and a framework for further developments, which will then be further established in the market. The research project illuminates the perspective of various governance innovations to increase industry collaboration, productivity and capital project performance and transparency as well as the overall potential of possible platform business models. However, a comprehensive expert survey revealed that there are considerable obstacles to trust-based data exchange between the key stakeholders in the industry value network. The obstacles to cooperation are predominantly not of a technical nature but rather of a competitive, predominantly trust-related nature. To overcome these obstacles and create a pre-competitive space of trust, the authors therefore propose the governance structure of a data cooperative model, which is discussed in detail in this paper.

Abstract Purpose The aim of this study was to translate, adapt and validate in French the Ankle Ligament Reconstruction ‐ Return to Sport after Injury (ALR‐RSI), a 12‐item English language scale assessing the psychological impact of returning to sports after ACL reconstruction. Our hypothesis was that the French version of the ALR‐RSI scale would be valid and adaptable to the French population. Methods The procedure followed the guidelines for the intercultural adaptation of the self‐administered questionnaires. A version of the ALR‐RSI‐Fr questionnaire was validated according to the international guidelines of COSMIN (COnsensus‐based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement INstruments). A prospective study was conducted between March 2020 and June 2021. The study included two population groups, the first one being that of adult athletes of all levels who underwent arthroscopic ankle ligament reconstruction and the second being that of adult athletes who did not suffer from any ankle problems. After consent, patients completed three questionnaires, the ALR‐RSI‐Fr, the AOFAS and the Karlsson score. Results The study included 30 patients and 30 controls who were all athletes. The mean age of the patients was 34.6 with 60% male and 40% female. The average time for patients to return to sport was 5.6 months. Twenty‐nine patients (96.6%) underwent arthroscopic ankle reconstruction while only one was eligible for ligament reinsertion. The control group with demographic data matched to the patient group was included in this study. Correlations between ALRSI, the total Karlsson score and its different sub items and the AOFAS were estimated using Spearman coefficients. Discriminant validity was tested between the “patient” and “control” groups and sub‐groups using the Wilcoxon tests. Reliability was evaluated on the ρ intraclass correlation coefficient (ICCC). A strong correlation was noted between the ALR‐RSI‐Fr, Karlsson and AOFAS with a Spearman score of 0.90 [0.76‐0.96].A highly significant difference was found between the “patient” and “control” groups. The internal consistency of the questionnaire was excellent with a Cronbach's alfa of 0.94. Reproducibility was “excellent” with an interclass correlation coefficient of q = 0.97 [0.94‐0.99]. Conclusion This study showed that the cross‐cultural adaptation of the English version of the ALR‐RSI was successful and validated for the French‐speaking population. The discriminant capacity of the scale between patients who underwent reconstruction and healthy subjects was also confirmed. Au-delà de leur caractère anecdotique ou promotionnel, ces dernières constituent une véritable source d’informations pour étudier la démocratisation d’un sport qui, à Paris comme dans les grandes villes de province, encourageait la noblesse du jeu et l’élégance de ses champions par-delà les rivalités et autres soupçons d’amateurisme marron. Toutefois, la littérature étant aussi un moyen de dire et d’interroger l’expérience du premier conflit mondial, certains romanciers ont rapproché métaphoriquement le rugby et la guerre pour mieux réinterroger, a posteriori, le sens du « Grand Match ». L’analyse de ces pages littéraires souhaite apporter un éclairage original pour appréhender, autrement, l’histoire du rugby français au cours des Années folles.

Ob anerkannte Schriftsteller oder einfache Sportjournalisten, mehrere Autoren nutzten tatsächlich die Veröffentlichungsmöglichkeiten der damaligen Zeit, um Geschichten über Rugby zu erzählen. Abgesehen von ihrem anekdotischen oder werbewirksamen Charakter stellen diese Geschichten eine ausgezeichnete Informationsquelle dar, um die Demokratisierung eines Sports zu untersuchen, der sowohl in Paris als auch in den anderen französischen Großstädten die Erhabenheit des Spiels und die Eleganz seiner Talente förderte, jenseits von Rivalitäten und Verdachtsmomenten zur unerlaubten Bezahlung von Amateurspielern. Gleichwohl dient die Literatur der damaligen Zeit auch dazu, die Erfahrungen des Ersten Weltkriegs zu erzählen und zu reflektieren, was einige Schriftsteller dazu veranlasst hat, den Sport auf metaphorischer Ebene dem Krieg anzunähern, um die Bedeutung des „Großen Matches“ a posteriori neu zu hinterfragen. Abstract A key premise underlying most of the economic literature is that rational decision-makers will choose dominant strategies over dominated alternatives. However, prior literature in various disciplines including business, psychology, and economics document a series of phenomena associated with violations of the dominance principle in decision-making. In this comprehensive review, we discuss conditions under which people violate the dominance principle in decision-making. When presenting violations of dominance in empirical and experimental studies, we differentiate between absolute, statewise, and stochastic (first- and second-order) violations of dominance. Furthermore, we categorize the literature by the leading causes for dominance violations: framing, reference points, certainty effects, bounded rationality, and emotional responses.

Well-implemented and functioning land administration systems are able to improve the wellbeing of rural households and support the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. As cadastral data are an essential part of a modern land administration system for documenting and securing the boundaries of parcels, Ethiopia recently embarked on one of the largest land surveying programs for rural land registration in Africa. Cadastral and land registration data provided by the land administration office of the woreda were analyzed using a Geographical Information System to investigate whether parcels of female-headed households were disadvantaged compared to parcels of male-headed households with regard to parcel size, parcel features, and access to infrastructure. In addition, the situation of female-headed households after the land registration process was analyzed in more detail. To this aim, quantitative and qualitative data were collected in the Ethiopian Machakel woreda through a household survey, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews. The results document no significant gender discrepancies in parcel features and access to infrastructures. In general, women confirmed an improvement in the wellbeing of female-headed households after the land registration and certification process.

Genome degradation has been central to the adaptation of Salmonella enterica serotypes to their hosts throughout evolution. We witnessed the patho-adaptation of a strain of Salmonella Dublin (a cattle-adapted serotype) to a human host during the course of a recurrent prosthetic hip joint infection evolving over several years.

Background A persistent problem in autologous breast reconstruction in skin-sparing mastectomies is skin restoration after skin necrosis or secondary oncological resection. As a solution to facilitate reconstruction, skin banking of free-flap skin has been proposed in cases where the overlying skin envelope must be resected, as this technique spares the patient an additional donor site. Herein, we present the largest series to date in which this method was used. We investigated its safety and the possibility of skin banking for prolonged periods of time. Methods All skin-sparing mastectomies and immediate autologous breast reconstructions from December 2009 until June 2013 at our institution were analysed. Results We identified 31 patients who underwent 33 free flap reconstructions in which skin banking was performed. Our median skin banking period was 7 days, with a maximum duration of 171 days. In 22.5% of cases, the banked skin was used to reconstruct overlying skin defects, and in 9.6% of cases to reconstruct the nipple-areolar complex. Microbiological and histological investigations of the banked skin revealed neither clinical infections nor malignancies. Conclusions In situ skin banking, even for prolonged periods of time, is a safe and cost-effective method to ensure that skin defects due to necrosis or secondary oncological resection can be easily reconstructed.

“Concentrated solar power” (CSP) and thermal energy storage (TES) are promising renewable energy technologies, which have gained increasing interest and practical application in recent years. CSP and TES systems typically utilize molten salts such as the so-called “solar salt”, a mixture of 60 wt.% NaNO3 and 40 wt.% KNO3, for heat transfer and storage. The overall efficiency of commercially operating CSP and TES systems is currently limited, because of solar salt thermal stability, which prevents process temperatures higher than 600 °C. Even at these temperatures, corrosion of the structural materials applied in salt guiding pipework, tubes and containers is a matter of concern in long-term operation, which necessitates careful material selection. This paper outlines the superior salt corrosion behavior of a novel low-cost, Al2O3-forming, ferritic, Laves phase-strengthened (i.e., structural) steel in NaNO3/KNO3 solar salt at 600 °C. Directions for the further development of the LB2230 trial steel towards improved structural properties are derived in comparison to its predecessor Crofer®22 H.

The skin is the outermost barrier protecting the body from pathogenic invasion and environmental insults. Its breakdown initiates the start of skin inflammation. The epidermal growth factor (EGFR) on keratinocytes protects this barrier, and its dysfunction leads to atopic dermatitis-like skin disease. One of the initial cytokines expressed upon skin barrier breach and during atopic dermatitis is TSLP. Here, we describe the expression and secretion of TSLP during EGFR inhibition and present an ex-vivo model, which mimics the early events after barrier insult. Skin explants floated on culture medium at 32 °C released TSLP in parallel to the activation of the resident Langerhans cell network. We could further show the up-regulation and activation of the AP-1 family of transcription factors during atopic-like skin inflammation and its involvement in TSLP production from the skin explant cultures. Inhibition of the c-Jun N-terminal kinase pathway led to a dose-dependent blunting of TSLP release. These data indicate the involvement of AP-1 during the early stages of atopic-like skin inflammation and highlight a novel therapeutic approach by targeting it. Therefore, skin explant cultures mimic the early events during skin barrier immunity and provide a suitable model to test therapeutic intervention.

Abstract When analyzing the influence of taxation on agency conflicts between firm owners and managers, one can draw on theoretical principal–agent literature from various research fields. In recent years, this interdisciplinary research has grown significantly covering research with regards to optimal compensation, investment decisions, tax avoidance and transfer pricing while analyzing the effects of corporate income taxes, wage taxes, bonus taxes and shareholder taxes. Our paper provides a comprehensive review of analytical literature that studies the influence of taxation on agency conflicts between firm owners and managers. Above and beyond summarizing research findings, we discuss how taxes are commonly implemented in agency models, derive empirical predictions, and identify research gaps for future tax research.

Oxide ceramics could be attractive high-temperature construction materials for critical structural parts in high-temperature molten salt thermal energy storage systems due to their excellent corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties. The 3D-printing technology allows the production of ceramic components with highly complex geometries, and therefore extends their applications. In this work, 3D-printed ZrO2 and Al2O3 ceramics were immersed in molten MgCl2/KCl/NaCl under argon or exposed in argon without molten chlorides at 700 °C for 600 h. Their material properties and microstructure were investigated through three-point-bend (3PB) testing and material analysis with SEM-EDX and XRD. The results show that the 3D-printed Al2O3 maintained its mechanical property after exposure in the strongly corrosive molten chloride salt. The 3D-printed ZrO2 had an enhanced 3PB strength after molten salt exposure, whereas no change was observed after exposure in argon at 700 °C. The material analysis shows that some of the ZrO2 on the sample surface changed its crystal structure and shape (T→M phase transformation) after molten salt exposure, which could be the reason for the enhanced 3PB strength. The thermodynamic calculation shows that the T→M transformation could be caused by the reaction of the Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2 with MgCl2 (mainly Y2O3 and ZrO2 with gaseous MgCl2). In conclusion, the 3D-printed ZrO2 and Al2O3 ceramics have excellent compatibility with corrosive molten chlorides at high temperatures and thus show a sound application potential as construction materials for molten chlorides.

E-learning is widely used in academic education, and currently, the COVID-19 pandemic is increasing the demand for e-learning resources. This report describes the results achieved and the experiences gained in the Erasmus+ CBHE (Capacity Building in Higher Education) project “Innovation on Remote Sensing Education and Learning (IRSEL)”. European and Asian universities created an innovative open source e-learning platform in the field of remote sensing. Twenty modules tailored to remote sensing study programs at the four Asian partner universities were developed. Principles of remote sensing as well as specific thematic applications are part of the modules, and a knowledge pool of e-learning teaching and learning materials was created. The focus was given to case studies covering a broad range of applications. Piloting with students gave evidence about the usefulness and quality of the developed modules. In particular, teachers and students who tested the modules appreciated the balance of theory and practice. Currently, the modules are being integrated into the curricula of the participating Asian universities. The content will be available to a broader public.

INTRODUCTION:Cotrimoxazole (Sulfamethoxazole-Trimethoprim, SXT) has interesting characteristics for the treatment of bone and joint infection (BJI): a broad spectrum of activity with adequate bone diffusion and oral and intravenous formulations. However, its efficacy and safety in BJIs are poorly documented and its use remains limited. METHODS:We conducted a retrospective study in 2 reference centers for BJIs from 2013 to 2018 among patients treated with SXT for a BJI. Data were collected from patient's medical charts. Outcomes and adverse events were evaluated at day (D)7, D45 and D90. RESULTS:We analyzed 51 patients with a mean age of 60 ± 20 (SD) years of which 76% presented with an orthopedic device infection (ODI). Gram-negative bacilli (GNB) were involved in 47% of BJIs (n = 24). Moreover, they were often polymicrobial infections (41%). Doses of SXT ranged from 800/160mg bid (61%; n = 31) to 800/160mg tid (39%; n = 20). Median SXT treatment duration was 45 days (IQR 40-45). SXT was part of a dual therapy in 84% of patients (n = 43), associated mainly with fluoroquinolones (n = 17) or rifampicin (n = 14). Outcome was favorable at D7 in 98% (n = 50), at D45 in 88.2% (n = 45) and at D90 in 78.4% (n = 40). The second agent combined with SXT was not an independent factor of favorable outcome (p = 0.97). Adverse events were reported in 8% (n = 4) of patients, with a median of 21 days (IQR 20-30) from SXT initiation and led to discontinuation (n = 3). CONCLUSION:SXT appears to be effective for treatment of BJIs as a salvage therapy, even in GNB or polymicrobial infection, including ODI. Further data are needed to confirm SXT efficacy as an alternative oral regimen in BJIs.

Thermal energy storage (TES) is capable to reduce the demand of conventional energy sources for two reasons: First, they prevent the mismatch between the energy supply and the power demand when generating electricity from renewable energy sources. Second, utilization of waste heat in industrial processes by thermal energy storage reduces the final energy consumption. This review focuses mainly on material aspects of alkali nitrate salts. They include thermal properties, thermal decomposition processes as well as a new method to develop optimized salt systems.

A method is presented in this work that integrates both emerging and mature data sources to estimate the operational travel demand in fine spatial and temporal resolutions. By analyzing individuals' mobility patterns revealed from their mobile phones, researchers and practitioners are now equipped to derive the largest trip samples for a region. Because of its ubiquitous use, extensive coverage of telecommunication services and high penetration rates, travel demand can be studied continuously in fine spatial and temporal resolutions. The derived sample or seed trip matrices are coupled with surveyed commute flow data and prevalent travel demand modeling techniques to provide estimates of the total regional travel demand in the form of origin-destination (OD) matrices. The methodology is evaluated in a series of real world transportation planning studies and proved its potentials in application areas such as dynamic traffic assignment modeling, integrated corridor management and online traffic simulations.

O objetivo deste artigo é refletir criticamente sobre a questão da diversidade cultural, apoiando-se em teorias culturais e em aspectos da comunicação. Por cultura, compreende-se um processo circular que envolve variedade, pluralidade e atravessamento de distintas perspectivas, não se restringindo a teorias especí cas e segmentadas. Nesse sentido e a liada à cultura, a diversidade se expressa como organismo plural e híbrido, projetando-se nos processos comunicacionais nos quais o outro (a diversidade) é parte intrínseca constituinte. Sendo, portanto, a comunicação uma outra face da cultura (e vice-versa), afirmamos que cabe à mídia proporcionar re exões críticas sobre o funcionamento da sociedade, ampliando o debate sobre diversidade e con gurando seu caráter híbrido e plural.

Electromagnetic plane waves, solutions to Maxwell’s equations, are said to be ‘transverse’ in vacuum. Namely, the waves’ oscillatory electric and magnetic fields are confined within a plane transverse to the waves’ propagation direction. Under tight-focusing conditions however, the field can exhibit longitudinal electric or magnetic components, transverse spin angular momentum, or non-trivial topologies such as Möbius strips. Here, we show that when a suitably spatially structured beam is tightly focused, a three-dimensional polarization topology in the form of a ribbon with two full twists appears in the focal volume. We study experimentally the stability and dynamics of the observed polarization ribbon by exploring its topological structure for various radii upon focusing and for different propagation planes.

When a beam of light is laterally confined, its field distribution can exhibit points where the local magnetic and electric field vectors spin in a plane containing the propagation direction of the electromagnetic wave. The phenomenon indicates the presence of a nonzero transverse spin density. Here, we experimentally investigate this transverse spin density of both magnetic and electric fields, occurring in highly confined structured fields of light. Our scheme relies on the utilization of a high-refractive-index nanoparticle as a local field probe, exhibiting magnetic and electric dipole resonances in the visible spectral range. Because of the directional emission of dipole moments that spin around an axis parallel to a nearby dielectric interface, such a probe particle is capable of locally sensing the magnetic and electric transverse spin density of a tightly focused beam impinging under normal incidence with respect to said interface. We exploit the achieved experimental results to emphasize the difference between magnetic and electric transverse spin densities.

Lateral ankle sprains are common; if conservative treatment fails and chronic instability develops, stabilization surgery is indicated. Numerous surgical procedures have been described, but those that most closely reproduce normal ankle lateral ligament anatomy and kinematics have been shown to have the best outcomes. Arthroscopy is a common adjunct to open ligament surgery, but it is traditionally only used to improve the diagnosis and the management of any associated intra-articular lesions. The stabilization itself is performed open because standard anterior ankle arthroscopy provides only partial visualization of the anterior talofibular ligament from above and the calcaneofibular ligament attachments cannot be seen at all. However, lateral ankle endoscopy can provide a view of this area that is superior to open surgery. We have developed a technique of ankle endoscopy that enables anatomic positioning of the repair or fixation of the graft. In this article we describe a safe and reproducible arthroscopic anatomic reconstruction of the lateral ligaments of the ankle using a gracilis autograft. The aim of this procedure is to obtain a more physiological reconstruction while maintaining all the advantages of an arthroscopic approach.

Road traffic has severe effects on animals, especially when road-kills are involved. In many countries, official road-kill data are provided by hunters or police; there are also road-kill observations reported by citizen scientists. The aim of the current study was to test whether road-kill reports by hunters stem from similar landscapes than those reported by citizen scientists. We analysed the surrounding landscapes of 712 road-kill reportings of European hares in the province of Lower Austria. Our data showed that road-killed hares reported both by hunters and citizens are predominantly surrounded by arable land. No difference of hedges and solitary trees could be found between the two datasets. However, significant differences in landcover classes and surrounding road networks indicate that hunters’ and citizen scientists’ data are different. Hunters reported hares from landscapes with significantly higher percentages of arable land, and greater lengths of secondary roads. In contrast, citizens reported hares from landscapes with significantly higher percentages of urban or industrial areas and greater lengths of motorways, primary roads, and residential roads. From this we argue that hunters tend to report data mainly from their hunting areas, whereas citizens report data during their daily routine on the way to/from work. We conclude that a citizen science approach is an important source for road-kill data when used in addition to official data with the aim of obtaining an overview of road-kill events on a landscape scale.

We calculate for La2CuO4 the phonon-induced redistribution of the electronic charge density in the insulating, the underdoped pseudogap, and the more conventional metallic state as obtained for optimal and overdoping, respectively. The investigation is performed for the anomalous high-frequency oxygen bond-stretching modes, which experimentally are known to display a strong softening of the frequencies upon doping in the cuprates. This most likely generic anomalous behaviour of these modes is shown to be due to a strong nonlocal electron-phonon interaction mediated by charge fluctuations on the ions. We demonstrate that the softening of the modes is caused by nonlocally induced dynamic charge inhomogeneities in form of charge stripes along the CuO bonds with different orbital character. The dynamic charge inhomogeneities may in turn be considered as precursors of static charge stripe order as recently observed in in a broad range of doping around . The latter may trigger a reconstruction of the Fermi surface into small pockets with reduced doping. We argue that the incompressibility of the orbital and simultaneously the compressibility of the orbital in the pseudogap state seem to be required to nucleate dynamic stripes.

Abstract Background Metastatic prostate cancer is a highly heterogeneous and dynamic disease and practicable tools for patient stratification and resistance monitoring are urgently needed. Liquid biopsy analysis of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and circulating tumor DNA are promising, however, comprehensive testing is essential due to diverse mechanisms of resistance. Previously, we demonstrated the utility of mRNA-based in situ padlock probe hybridization for characterizing CTCs. Methods We have developed a novel combinatorial dual-color (CoDuCo) assay for in situ mRNA detection, with enhanced multiplexing capacity, enabling the simultaneous analysis of up to 15 distinct markers. This approach was applied to CTCs, corresponding tumor tissue, cancer cell lines, and peripheral blood mononuclear cells for single-cell and spatial gene expression analysis. Using supervised machine learning, we trained a random forest classifier to identify CTCs. Image analysis and visualization of results was performed using open-source Python libraries, CellProfiler, and TissUUmaps. Results Our study presents data from multiple prostate cancer patients, demonstrating the CoDuCo assay’s ability to visualize diverse resistance mechanisms, such as neuroendocrine differentiation markers (SYP, CHGA, NCAM1) and AR-V7 expression. In addition, druggable targets and predictive markers (PSMA, DLL3, SLFN11) were detected in CTCs and formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue. The machine learning-based CTC classification achieved high performance, with a recall of 0.76 and a specificity of 0.99. Conclusions The combination of high multiplex capacity and microscopy-based single-cell analysis is a unique and powerful feature of the CoDuCo in situ assay. This synergy enables the simultaneous identification and characterization of CTCs with epithelial, epithelial-mesenchymal, and neuroendocrine phenotypes, the detection of CTC clusters, the visualization of CTC heterogeneity, as well as the spatial investigation of tumor tissue. This assay holds significant potential as a tool for monitoring dynamic molecular changes associated with drug response and resistance in prostate cancer.
