Abstract

The activation of distinct second messenger systems is possible by the coupling of four isoforms of EP3 receptor, produced by alternative splicing, to different G proteins, namely Gp, Go, Gi and Gs. Prostaglandin PGE2 receptor activates two distinct second messenger pathways in chromaffin cells, and binds to one EP3 receptor class. Physiologically different receptor activity is due to alternative splicing, demonstrated by EP3 isoforms activating second messenger cascades.
