Molecular analyses of the recently described Xanthoria polessica collected from the type locality and of the Australian species X. coomae were used to determine whether these taxa are distinct species or fall within the wide phenotypic variation of the well-known and cosmopolitan X. parietina . Our results clearly indicate that both taxa should be considered as synonyms of X. parietina since the infraspecific morphological range is accommodated by the observed variation in the thallus and lobe size, their color, position of apothecia, the shape of ascospores, and width of ascospore septum.

Micarea elachista, M. micrococca and M. misella are reported for the first time from Belarus. Their phenotypic characters, distribution and ecological preferences are given.

Th ree lichen species and eight lichenicolous fungi were recorded for the fi rst time for St. Petersburg or Eastern Leningrad Region. In addition, the protected species Lobaria scrobiculata was rediscovered in the Leningrad Region. Micarea is a lichenized genus in the family Pilocarpaceae (Ascomycota). We studied the phylogeny and reassessed the current taxonomy of the M. prasina group. We focused especially on the taxonomic questions concerning the type species M. prasina and, furthermore, challenges concerning type specimens that are too old for successful DNA barcoding and molecular studies. The phylogeny was reconstructed using nuc rDNA internal transcribed spacer region (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 = ITS), mitochrondrial rDNA small subunit (mtSSU), and replication licensing factor MCM7 gene from 31 species. Fifty-six new sequences were generated. The data were analyzed using maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood methods. The results revealed four undescribed, well-supported lineages. Three lineages represent new species described here as M. fallax, M. flavoleprosa, and M. pusilla. In addition, our results support the recognition of M. melanobola as a distinct species. Micarea fallax is characterized by a vivid to olive green thallus composed of aggregated granules and whitish or brownish apothecia sometimes with grayish tinge (Sedifolia-gray pigment).Micarea flavoleprosa has a thick, wide-spreading yellowish green, whitish green to olive green sorediate thallus and lacks the Sedifolia-gray pigmentation. The species is mostly anamorphic, developing apothecia rarely. Micarea melanobola is characterized by a pale to dark vivid green granular thallus and darkly pigmented apothecia (Sedifolia-gray). Micarea pusilla is characterized by a whitish green to olive green thinly granular or membranous thallus, numerous and very small whitish apothecia lacking the Sedifolia-gray pigment, and by the production of methoxymicareic acid. Micarea fallax, M. flavoleprosa, and M. melanobola produce micareic acid. The reliability of crystalline granules as a character for species delimitation was investigated and was highly informative for linking the old type specimen of M. prasina to fresh material. Didymocyrtis epiphyscia s. lat. is reported for the first time for Kazakhstan and Central Asia. Anatomical characteristics of studied material are provided. Taxonomic difficulties of the D. epiphyscia complex are discussed. Two hundred six specimens of Xanthoparmelia collected in Belarus in 1905-2017 were examined based on morphological and chemical characters. Six species (X. angustiphylla, X. conspersa, X. delisei, X. loxodes, X. pulla and X. verruculifera) were identified in this study. Xanthoparmelia angustiphylla and X. delisei are reported for Belarus for the first time. Presence of Xanthoparmelia pokornyi and X. stenophylla has not been confirmed, and therefore these species should be excluded from the Belarusian list of lichens. Records of 21 species of lichen-forming and lichenicolous fungi new to Gomel region, the south-eastern Belarus are presented. Of these, six species (Bacidia fraxinea, Briancoppinsia cytospora, Calicium parvum, Chaenothecopsis savonica, Enchylium bachmanianum and Intralichen christiansenii) are new to Belarus, seven species (Carbonicola anthracophila, Chaenotheca hispidula, Cornutispora lichenicola, Lichenochora obscuroides, Lichenoconium xanthoriae, Pyrenochaeta xanthoriae and Tremella hypogymniae) have been previously known from one locality in the country. The occurrence of Ochrolechia microstictoides is confirmed with certainty for Belarus. Ochrolechia parella is excluded from the list of lichens of Gomel region as erroneously identified. Twenty two species of lichenicolous fungi are reported as new to Orenburg region. Of these, Didymocyrtis cladoniicola is new to European Russia; Lichenoconium lichenicola, Marchandiomyces corallinus, Merismatium decolorans, Phoma peltigerae and Roselliniella cladoniae are new to the southern part of European Russia. The new lichenicolous fungus Capronia suijae growing on the thallus of corticolous Xanthoria parietina is described from Belarus and compared with similar species. In addition to its host selection, the species is characterized by comparatively small ascomata, 40–80 μm diam., and (0–1–)3-septate ascospores, 9·5–11·5×4·0–5·0 μm. Twenty two species of lichenicolous and two occasionally lichen-inhabiting fungi are reported from the Samara Region. Based on an examination of 360 herbarium specimens of the genus Lepraria, this study deals with their morphology, secondary chemistry, habitat requirements and distribution in Belarus. Nine taxa have been accepted, of which L. ecorticata, L. finkii and L. rigidula are new to the country. L. incana appears to be the commonest species in the country (48% of the studied specimens). Based on an examination of c. 500 herbarium specimens of the Cladonia pyxidata-chlorophaea complex, this study deals with their morphology, secondary chemistry, habitat requirements and distribution in Belarus. Eleven taxa have been accepted, of which C. conista, C. cryptochlorophaea, C. homosekikaica, C. merochlorophaea, C. monomorpha and C. novochlorophaea are new to the country. Cladonia grayi appears to be the commonest species in the country (c. 40% of the studied specimens), and C. pyxidata is uncommon in Belarus, known only from 10 localities. Two hundred and ten specimens of Cetrelia collected in Belarus in 1954-2012 were examined based on morphological and chemical characters. Three closely related species of Cetrelia (C. cetrarioides, C. monachorum and C. olivetorum) were identified in this study. A total of 267 species and two subspecies of the lichen-forming and lichenicolous fungi from Gomel region (Republic of Belarus) are listed. Of these, seven lichen species and two lichenicolous fungi are indicated as new to the region. Acarospora moenium is a new lichen species to Belarus. Accurate species delimitation has a pivotal role in conservation biology, and it is especially important for threatened species where decisions have political and economic consequences. Finding and applying appropriate character sets and analytical tools to resolve interspecific relationships remains challenging in lichenized fungi. The main aim of our study was to re-assess the species boundaries between Usnea subfloridana and Usnea florida , which have been phylogenetically indistinguishable until now, but are different in reproductive mode and ecological preferences, using fungal-specific simple sequence repeats (SSR), i.e. microsatellite markers. Bayesian clustering analysis, discriminant analysis of principal components (DAPC), minimal spanning network (MSN), and principal component analysis (PCA) failed to separate U. florida and U. subfloridana populations. However, a low significant differentiation between the two taxa was observed across all populations according to AMOVA results. Also, analysis of shared haplotypes and statistical difference in clonal diversity (M) supported the present-day isolation between the apotheciate U. florida and predominantly sorediate U. subfloridana. Our results do not provide a clear support either for the separation of species in this pair or the synonymization of U. florida and U. subfloridana. We suggest that genome-wide data could help resolve the taxonomic question in this species pair. • Species boundaries between Usnea florida and Usnea subfloridana were re-assessed. • Microsatellite markers were used for species delimitation purposes. • A high level of gene flow must have occurred between Usnea populations. • Our study does not support either for separation or synonymization of study taxa.
