Single–atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted wide attention to be acted as potential electrocatalysts for nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). However, the coordination environment of the single transition metal (TM) atoms is essential to the catalytic activity for NRR. Herein, we proposed four types of 3‐, 4‐coordinated and π–d conjugated TMxB3N3S6 (x=2, 3, TM=Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Zr, Nb, Mo, Tc, Ru, Hf, Ta, W, Re and Os) monolayers for SACs. Based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations, I‐TM2B3N3S6 and III‐TM3B3N3S6 are the reasonable 3‐coordinated and 4‐coordinated structures screening by structure stable optimizations, respectively. Next, the structural configurations, electronic properties and catalytic performances of 30 kinds of the 3‐coordinated I‐TM2B3N3S6 and 4‐coordinated III‐TM3B3N3S6 monolayers with different single transition metal atoms were systematically investigated. The results reveal that B3N3S6 ligand is an ideal support for TM atoms due to existence of strong TM‐S bonds. The 3‐coordinated I‐V2B3N3S6 is the best SAC with the low limiting potential (UL) of −0.01 V, excellent stability (Ef=−0.32 eV, Udiss=0.02 V) and remarkable selectivity characteristics. This work not only provides novel π–d conjugated SACs, but also gives theoretical insights into their catalytic activities and offers reference for experimental synthesis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[Mn.sup.2+]-doped ZnS nanocrystals with an amine-capping layer have been synthesized and used for the fluorescence detection of ultratrace 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) by quenching the strong orange [Mn.sup.2+] photoluminescence. The organic amine-capped nanocrystals can bind TNT species from solution and atmosphere by the acid base pairing interaction between electron-rich amino ligands and electron-deficient aromatic rings. The resultant TNT anions bound onto the amino monolayer can efficiently quench the [Mn.sup.2+] photoluminescence through the electron transfer from the conductive band of ZnS to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of TNT anions. The amino ligands provide an amplified response to the binding events of nitroaromatic compounds by the 2- to ~5-fold increase in quenching constants. Moreover, a large difference in quenching efficiency was observed for different types of nitroaromatic analytes, dependent on the affinity of nitro analytes to the amino monolayer and their electron-acceptlng abilities. The amine-capped nanocrystals can sensitively detect down to 1 nM TNT in solution or several parts-per-billion of TNT vapor in atmosphere. The ion-doped nanocrystal sensors reported here show a remarkable air/solution stability, high quantum yield, and strong analyte affinity and, therefore, are well-suited for detecting the ultratrace TNT and distinguishing different nitro compounds.

In the field of electrolysis of water, the design and synthesis of catalysts over a wide pH range have attracted extensive attentions. In this paper, Co and N are co-introduced into the structural unit of tungsten disulfide (WS2), and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performances of different WS2-based catalysts are theoretically predicted and systematically studied by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. With the guidance of DFT calculations, an evaporation-pyrolysis strategy is applied to prepare Co and N co-doped WS2 (Co,N-WS2) flower-like nanosheets, which exhibits excellent HER performance over a wide pH range. In addition, the DFT calculations show that the active sites in Co,N-WS2 have a good ability of hydrogen adsorption after the introduction of Co and N, suggesting that such a co-doping system will be an ideal catalyst for oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH). The following experiment results indeed evidence that the Co,N-WS2 catalyst displays a high activity in the ODH of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline (4H-quinoline) and its derivatives. Therefore, this work provides a good example for the rational design and accurate preparation of functional catalysts, which enables it possible to develop other efficient catalysts with multiple functions. The development of highly active and stable bifunctional noble‐metal‐based electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a crucial goal for clean and renewable energy, which still remains challenging. Herein, we report an efficient and stable catalyst comprising a Co single atom incorporated in an RuO2 sphere for HER and OER, in which the Co single atom in the RuO2 sphere was confirmed by XAS, AC‐STEM, and DFT. This tailoring strategy uses a Co single atom to modify the electronic structures of the surrounding Ru atoms and thereby remarkably elevates the electrocatalytic activities. The catalyst requires ultralow overpotentials, 45 mV for HER and 200 mV for OER, to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm−2. The theoretical calculations reveal that the energy barriers for HER and OER are lowered after incorporation of a cobalt single atom. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Isolated single-atom site metals/nitrogen-doped porous carbon (ISAS M/NPC, M = Fe, Co, Ni) catalysts are successfully prepared by a top–down polymerization-pyrolysis-etching-activation (PPEA) strategy, which uses dopamine as the precursor. Due to the isolated single atom Fe active sites and porous structure, the ISAS Fe/NPC catalyst displays a high benzene conversion up to 42.6% and nearly 100% phenol selectivity. We investigated pseudo-cubic Cu 2- x Te nanosheets using electron diffraction tomography and high-resolution HAADF-STEM imaging. The structure of this metastable nanomaterial, which has a strong localized surface plasmon resonance in the near-infrared region, was determined ab initio by 3D electron diffraction data recorded in low-dose nanobeam precession mode, using a new generation background-free single-electron detector. The presence of two different, crystallographically defined modulations creates a 3D connected vacancy channel system, which may account for the strong plasmonic response of this material. Moreover, a pervasive rotational twinning is observed for nanosheets as thin as 40 nm, resulting in a tetragonal pseudo-symmetry.

Cu2-xTe nanocubes were used as starting seeds to access metal telluride nanocrystals by cation exchanges at room temperature. The coordination number of the entering cations was found to play an important role in dictating the reaction pathways. The exchanges with tetrahedrally coordinated cations (i.e., with coordination number 4), such as Cd(2+) or Hg(2+), yielded monocrystalline CdTe or HgTe nanocrystals with Cu2-xTe/CdTe or Cu2-xTe/HgTe Janus-like heterostructures as intermediates. The formation of Janus-like architectures was attributed to the high diffusion rate of the relatively small tetrahedrally coordinated cations, which could rapidly diffuse in the Cu2-xTe NCs and nucleate the CdTe (or HgTe) phase in a preferred region of the host structure. Also, with both Cd(2+) and Hg(2+) ions the exchange led to wurtzite CdTe and HgTe phases rather than the more stable zinc-blende ones, indicating that the anion framework of the starting Cu2-xTe particles could be more easily deformed to match the anion framework of the metastable wurtzite structures. As hexagonal HgTe had never been reported to date, this represents another case of metastable new phases that can only be accessed by cation exchange. On the other hand, the exchanges involving octahedrally coordinated ions (i.e., with coordination number 6), such as Pb(2+) or Sn(2+), yielded rock-salt polycrystalline PbTe or SnTe nanocrystals with Cu2-xTe@PbTe or Cu2-xTe@SnTe core@shell architectures at the early stages of the exchange process. In this case, the octahedrally coordinated ions are probably too large to diffuse easily through the Cu2-xTe structure: their limited diffusion rate restricts their initial reaction to the surface of the nanocrystals, where cation exchange is initiated unselectively, leading to core@shell architectures. Interestingly, these heterostructures were found to be metastable as they evolved to stable Janus-like architectures if annealed at 200 °C under vacuum.

We report a simple method for the incorporation of Cu(I) or (64)Cu(I) radionuclides in covellite nanocrystals (CuS NCs). After the in situ reduction of Cu(II) or (64)Cu(II) ions by ascorbic acid, their incorporation in PEG-coated CuS NCs takes place at room temperature. In all the reaction steps, the stability of the NCs under physiological conditions was ensured. The copper incorporation reaction could also take place on CuS NCs bearing biotin molecules at their surface, with no detrimental effects on the specific binding affinity of the NCs toward streptavidin after incorporation. At low loading of Cu ions, the strong near-infrared (NIR) absorption band of the starting CuS NCs was essentially preserved, which allowed for efficient plasmonic photothermal therapy. The combined presence in the NCs of (64)Cu ions, well suitable for positron emission tomography, and of free carriers responsible for the NIR absorption, should enable their theranostic use as radiotracers and as photothermal probes in tumor ablation treatments. Moreover, the simplicity of the preparation scheme, which involves the use of radioactive species only as a last step, makes the protocol easily transferable to the clinical practice.

We studied the structural and compositional transformations of colloidal covellite (CuS) nanocrystals (and of djurleite (Cu 1.94 S) nanocrystals as a control) when exposed to divalent cations, as Cd 2+ and Hg 2+ , at room temperature in organic solvents. All the experiments were run in the absence of phosphines, which are a necessary ingredient for cation exchange reactions involving copper chalcogenides, as they strongly bind to the expelled Cu + ions. Under these experimental conditions, no remarkable reactivity was indeed seen for both CuS and Cu 1.94 S nanocrystals. On the other hand, in the covellite structure 2/3 of sulfur atoms form covalent S-S bonds. This peculiarity suggests that the combined presence of electron donors and of foreign metal cations can trigger the entry of both electrons and cations in the covellite lattice, causing reorganization of the anion framework due to the rupture of the S-S bonds. In Cu 1.94 S, which lacks S-S bonds, this mechanism should not be accessible. This hypothesis was proven by the experimental evidence that adding ascorbic acid increased the fraction of metal ions incorporated in the covellite nanocrystals, while it had no noticeable effect on the Cu 1.94 S ones. Once inside the covellite particles, Cd 2+ and Hg 2+ cations engaged in exchange reactions, pushing the expelled Cu + ions toward the not-yet exchanged regions in the same particles, or out to the solution, from where they could be recaptured by other covellite nanoparticles/domains. Because no good solvating agent for Cu ions was present in solution, they essentially remained in the nanocrystals.

This paper reports that extremely strongly coupled excitonic states were formed in H-aggregated monocrystalline nanosheets and semicrystalline nanowires of coplanar organic molecules of 2,5-bis(4-methoxybenzylidene) cyclopentanone, due to the highly regular face-to-face stacking of molecular excitons. It was demonstrated that the spectral absorption and fluorescence emission behaviors are dependent on the routes of molecular aggregation and the ordered degree of molecular arrangement in aggregated nanoparticles. In particular, the H-type aggregation of molecules through a highly ordered molecular arrangement in the monocrystalline nanosheets led to the formation of a new exciton coupling state with an energy band higher than that in normal semi-/noncrystalline H-aggregation. A strong symmetric absorption at higher energy bands was thus observed in the solution of nanosheets. Furthermore, the strongly coupled excitonic state may hold all the oscillator strength, leading to the extinction of the original intramolecular electronic transitions of individual molecules and the appearance of new strong absorption and fluorescence emissions at high-energy bands. These results show a perspective that the ability to control the molecular structure and its arrangement in aggregates holds promise for creating novel optical properties in molecular materials.
