AIM: To study changes in the plasma concentration of Β-endorphin (Β-E) in patients with hemophilia A and B (in the presence of bleeding and in the absence of hemorrhagic syndrome) and in whole blood and plasma donors before and after donation and to investigate the factors associated with (Β-E) concentration changes/MATERIAL AND METHODS: The prospective study of Β-E concentration changes (and related factors) enrolled 38 persons: 12 patients with hemophilia after acute blood loss, 11 patients with hemophilia without hemorrhagic syndrome, and 15 whole blood and plasma donors. Β-E concentrations were measured by enzyme immunoassay/RESULTS: In blood loss, the patients with hemophilia were found to have elevated serum Β-E concentration: 9.6 pg/ml (95% confidence interval (CI), 6.1 to 13.0 pg/ml) versus 5.2 pg/ml (95% CI, 1.4 to 8.9 pg/ml). After donation, the concentration of Β-E in the group of donors was higher than before donation: 7.3 pg/ml (95% CI, 4.9 to 9.7 pg/ml) versus 4.7 pg/ml (95% CI, 3.2 to 6.3 pg/ml). In the group of patients with hemophilia, the elevation of Β-E concentrations is steady-state (lasted at least 10 days); at this time, the Β-E value variability (estimated by mean square deviation) increased as compared with that in remission: 7.7 pg/ml (95% CI, 5.5 to 13.1 pg/ml) versus 2.4 pg/ml (95% CI, 1.7 to 4.4 pg/ml). The above differences are statistically significant (p=0.05)/CONCLUSION: In blood loss, there is an increase in plasma Β-E concentrations in the patients with hemophilia and donors. The increase in Β-E concentrations and the variability of its values were greater in the patients with hemophilia and blood loss than in the donors. The Β-E concentration elevation accompanying hemorrhage is characterized by steadiness in the patients with hemophilia.

AIM: To evaluate the effect of pathogen-inactivated platelet concentrates (PIPC) on posttransfusion platelet increments, hemorrhagic syndrome relief, and transfusion intervals/MATERIAL AND METHODS: This prospective study included 29 hemoblastosis patients (13 women, 16 men), median age 38 years (20-66 years). Pathogens were inactivated by the photodynamic method using the Intecept system. Each patient received two PC transfusions: one PIPC transfusion and one control one. Posttransfusion platelet increments one hour and one day after PC transfusion, the course of hemorrhagic syndrome, and the time to next platelet transfusion were analyzed/RESULTS: Pathogen inactivation with amotosalen and ultraviolet irradiation reduced posttransfusion platelet increments in recipients by 24% after one hour and by 29% after one day after PIPC transfusion versus control ones/CONCLUSION: The clinical efficiency of transfusions of amotosalen-induced PIPC was comparable with that of untreated platelet concentrates. Despite a reduction in post-transfusion platelet increment with the use of PIPC, this caused no significant increase in the frequency of transfusions.

The article examines the essence of the principle of justice in Russian criminal law, its reflection in the norms of the criminal legislation of Russia, as well as the influence of this principle in sentencing.

The purpose of the present research is to study the incidence and severity of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in male population of the Russian Federation and to establish the relationship with the most common diseases. Based on the materials of population survey of 1083 men (mean age - 42,8±14,1 years) held in the Russian Federation in 2011-2012 the relationship between age, weight, height, sexual activity, addictions, co-morbidities and the answers to the questionnaire IPSS with the assessment of quality of life in relation with existing disorders of urination (QoL) was studied in six federal districts. 649 (59.9%) respondents had urinary system disorders (IPSS>0), the mean (±SD) of the sum IPSS questionnaire score was 5,0±7,0. LUTS severity was greater in: older men (τB=0,441; p<0,001); in men who had undergone surgeries of the pelvic organs (τB=0,242; p<0,001); in the presence of coronary artery ischaemic disease (τB=0,242; p<0,001), arterial hypertension (τB=0,255; p<0,001); diabetes mellitus (τB=0,154; p<0,001); obesity (τB=0,148; p<0,001); depression (τB=0,126; p<0,001); and sexual disorders (τB=-0,425; p<0,001). The prevalence of LUTS in men of the Russian Federation is high, their relationship with age and comorbidities require a comprehensive approach to prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

The regulation of the heartbeat by the two largest neurons, d-VLN and d-RPLN, on the dorsal surface of visceral and right parietal ganglia of Giant African snail, Achatina fulica, was examined. Using the new method of animal preparation, for the first time, discrete biphasic inhibitory-excitatory junction potentials (I-EJPs) in the heart and several muscles of the visceral sac were recorded. The duration of hyperpolarizing phase (H-phase) of biphasic I-EJPs was 269+/-5.6 ms (n=5), which is 2-3 times less than that of the cholinergic inhibitory JPs (682+/-68.5 ms, n=5). The H-phase of I-EJPs was not altered by the application of atropine, picrotoxine, succinylcholinchloride, D-tubocurarine and tetraethylammonium or substitution of Cl(-) ions. Even the low-frequency neuronal discharges (1-2 imp/s) evoked significant facilitation and potentiation of the H-phase. Between the multimodal neurons d-VLN/d-RPLN and mantle or visceral organs there is evidence of direct synaptic connections. These neurons were found to have no axonal branches in the intestinal nerve as once suspected but reach the heart through several other nerves. New giant heart motoneurons do not interact with previously identified cardioregulatory neurons.

The postjunctional potentials and chronoinotropic reactions of the heart evoked by activation of multimodal neurons and/or left pallial nerve were investigated in three species of land pulmonates: Achatina fulica Ferrussac, Helix lucorum L., Arianta arbustorum L. Both spikes of giant homologous neurons (d-VLN, d-RPLN by A. fulica, command neurons of pneumostoma LPa3, RPa3 by H. lucorum) and stimulation of the peripheral end of the left pallial nerve evoked the similar biphasic inhibitory-excitatory junction potentials in the heart, in mantle muscles and in different parts of visceral complex. The positive chronoinotropic effects of this input in the hearts of whole-mount preparations were modified due to interaction with well-known neural cardioregulating network of the system of intestinal nerve.

The excitatory motor unit of Achatina fulica is composed of five identified cardioregulatory motor neurons: three tonically active neurons (TAN-1, -2 and -3), a periodically oscillating neuron (PON) and a VG1 neuron. High frequency discharges in TAN neurons evoked slow depolarization waves. The PON elicited biphasic excitatory post synaptic potentials (EPSP). One spike in PON was sufficient to increase heart rate for several minutes. VG1 elicited discrete fast EPSP in the myocardium. Bursts of spikes from VG1 resulted in a summation of EPSP and transiently increased heart. VG1 inhibited spontaneous electrical activity in PON. Our results suggest that the use of semi-intact preparations allow elucidation of new functional cardioregulatory properties of intact neural networks.

Two inhibitory heart motor neurons (HI-1, HI-2) were identified in the visceral ganglion of the snail Achatina fulica. Both motor neurons were connected monosynaptically with the myocardium. Irregular action potentials composed a typical pattern of neuronal spontaneous electrical activity. The neurons shared common excitatory synaptic inputs, and were connected through electrical synapses. Neuronal endings of these cells responded to tactile stimulation and to cardiac stretching when the chemical synapses were blocked. HI-1 and HI-2 neurons both elicited inhibitory post synaptic potentials in the myocardium with a constant delay and thereby modulated cardiac spikes frequency and amplitude. Staining with the dye Lucifer yellow revealed that these two neurons were unipolar cells which had dendrites only in the visceral ganglion.
