Abstract

Diglycolamides (DGAs), and in particular N,N,N′,N′-tetraoctyl diglycolamide (TODGA), are well-known candidates for the co-extraction of trivalent actinides (An(iii)) and lanthanides (Ln(iii)) from highly acidic aqueous solutions of nuclear waste. A derivative of TODGA, the so-called Me-TODGA with the addition of a methyl-substituent on the central part of the TODGA molecule, has been proposed to improve its stability properties and extraction behaviour. This work describes the stability and viability of Me-TODGA by studying the properties of its degradation compounds formed upon gamma irradiation. The main degradation products have been synthesised and studied individually. Particular attention has been paid to their quantification, as well as their complexation and extraction properties, for a better understanding of the degradation pathways and the behaviour of the solvents upon gamma irradiation. The extraction behaviour of irradiated Me-TODGA solvents and their degradation compounds have been studied toward the fission products and lanthanides present in a highly active raffinate (HAR) solution. Binding properties of parent molecules (TODGA and Me-TODGA) and their main degradation compounds with Ln(iii) have also been determined in a homogeneous phase. All the results obtained on degradation compounds are compared with those of the parent molecules in order to assess the effects of these compounds on the separation process. Among the radiolytic compounds, 2-hydroxyoctylamides are the most problematic compounds not only because of their high affinity for lanthanides but also for other fission products. Abstract

Five diglycolamide-appended calix[4]arene (C4DGA) ligands, viz. C4DGA with no substituent (L-I),n-propyl (L-II), 3-pentyl (L-III),n-octyl (L-IV) and both side (L-V) substituents were evaluated for the separation of carrier free90Y from a90Y–90Sr mixture using the flat sheet supported liquid membrane technique. Based on the results of earlier batch studies, the transport properties of the C4DGA ligands towards Y(III) and Sr(II) were monitored at two different feed acidities. The transport rates were significantly lower for 6 M HNO3as compared to 3 M HNO3as the feed. After 6 h, the observed trend of Y(III) transport with the C4DGA ligands using a feed of 3 M HNO3was:L-I~L-III>L-V>L-IV>L-IIwhich changed toL-III>L-I > L-IV>L-V>L-IIfor 6 M HNO3as the feed. With 3 M HNO3as feed, >97% Y(III) transport was obtained withL-IandL-IIIin 6 h. Comparative Sr(II) transport was negligible resulting in high decontamination factors. In a one-step separation process, usingL-Ias the carrier ligand, pure90Y was obtained as the respective complex with either EDTA or DOTA. The highlights of this liquid membrane-based separation method comprise: its easiness, one-step separation, low ligand inventory, relatively pure product and continuous method. Abstract

A laterally coupled microring resonator was fabricated by direct photodefinition of negative photoresist SU8, containing tricyanovinylidenediphenylaminobenzene chromophore, by exploiting the low ultraviolet absorption window of this chromophore. The ring resonator was first photodefined by slight cross-linking. Thereafter, poling (to align the chromophores) and further cross-linking (to increase the glass transition temperature) were simultaneously carried out. The material showed excellent photostability and the electro-optic modulation with an r33 of 11 pm/V was demonstrated at 10 MHz. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Direct waveguide definition of a negative photoresist (SU8) containing tricyanovinylidenediphenylaminobenzene (TCVDPA) as electro-optic (EO) chromophore, has been demonstrated for the first time. This was possible by utilising the chromophore low absorption window in the UV region allowing crosslinking of the host polymer by exposing to UV light followed by thermal curing. TCVDPA was modified by attachment of bulky side groups. This reduced the intermolecular interactions and resulted in an increased EO (r33) coefficient. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
