This paper presents a deep and comprehensive multi-instrumental analysis of two distinct ionospheric storms occurring in March and April 2023. We investigate the ionospheric response in the middle-latitudinal European region utilizing ionospheric vertical sounding at five European stations: Juliusruh, Dourbes, Pruhonice, Sopron, and a reference station, San Vito. Additionally, we employ Digisonde Drift Measurement, Continuous Doppler Sounding System, local geomagnetic measurements, and optical observations. We concentrate on the F2 and F1 region parameters and shape of the electron density profile. During the March event, a pre-storm enhancement was observed, characterized by an increase in electron density up to approximately 20% at northern stations, with minimal effect observed at San Vito. We present a novel detailed temporal and spatial description of a so-called G-condition. It was observed not only in the morning hours in the period of the increased geomagnetic activity during (and shortly after) the main phase of the storm, but also during low to moderate geomagnetic activity with Kp between 1 and 3+. Further, an alteration in the shape of the electron density profile, notably captured by the parameter B0 was observed. A substantial increase in B0, by several hundred percent, was noted during both events on the day of the geomagnetic disturbance and importantly also on the subsequent day with low-to-moderate geomagnetic activity. During both storms, the critical frequency foF1 decreased at all stations including San Vito. Changes in electron density in the F1 region indicate plasma outflow during morning hours. Distinct and persistent oblique reflections from the auroral oval were observed on the ionograms for several hours during both events and these observations were in agreement with optical observations of auroral activity and concurrent rapid geomagnetic changes at collocated stations. For the first time, we present a unique and convincing excellent agreement between the Continuous Doppler Sounding System and Digisonde Drift Measurement. The results reveal vertical movement of plasma up to ±80 m/s. Analysis of observed vertical plasma drifts and horizontal component H of magnetic field in Czechia and Belgium suggest that vertical motion of the F-region plasma is caused by ExB plasma drift.

Mesoscale convective systems are effective sources of atmospheric disturbances that can reach ionospheric heights and significantly alter atmospheric and ionospheric conditions. Convective systems can affect the Earth’s atmosphere on a continental scale and up to F-layer heights. Extratropical cyclone “Zyprian” occurred at the beginning of July, 2021 and dominated weather over the whole of Europe. An extensive cold front associated with “Zyprian” moved from the western part to the eastern part of Europe, followed by ground-level convergence and the formation of organized convective thunderstorm systems. Torrential rains in the Czech Republic have caused a great deal of damage and casualties. Storm-related signatures were developed in ground microbarograph measurements of infrasound and gravity waves. Within the stratosphere, a shift of the polar jet stream and increase in specific humidity related to the storm system were observed. At the ionospheric heights, irregular stratification and radio wave reflection plane undulation were observed. An increase in wave-like activity was detected based on ionograms and narrowband very-low-frequency (VLF) data. On directograms and SKYmaps (both products of digisonde measurements), strong and rapid changes in the horizontal plasma motion were recorded. However, no prevailing plasma motion direction was identified within the F-layer. Increased variability within the ionosphere is attributed mainly to the “Zyprian” cyclone as it developed during low geomagnetic activity and stable solar forcing.

A novel method was developed based on the amplitude data of the EM waves measured by Digisondes to calculate and investigate the relative ionospheric absorption changes. The effect of 13 solar flares (>C8) that occurred from 4 to 10 September 2017 were studied at three European Digisonde stations (Juliusruh (54.63°N, 13.37°E), Průhonice (49.98°N, 14.55°E) and San Vito (40.6°N, 17.8°E)). The present study compares the results of the amplitude method with the absorption changes measured by the Finnish Riometer Network and determined by the NOAA D-RAP model during the same events. The X-class flares caused 1.5–2.5 dB of attenuation at 30–32.5 MHz based on the riometer data, while the absorption changes were between 10 and 15 dB in the 2.5–4.5 MHz frequency range according to the amplitude data. The impact caused by energetic particles after the solar flares are clearly seen in the riometer data, while among the Digisonde stations it can be observed only at Juliusruh in some certain cases. Comparing the results of the amplitude method with the D-RAP model it seems evident that the observed absorption values almost always exceed the values given by the model both at 2.5 MHz and at 4 MHz during the investigated period. According to the comparison between the riometer data with the D-RAP, generally, the model underestimates the absorption values obtained from the riometers during solar flares except at the highest latitude stations, while D-RAP overestimates the impact during the particle events.

A comparison of three types of ionosonde data from Europe during an interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME)- and a corotating interaction region (CIR)-driven geomagnetic storm event is detailed in this study. The selected events are 16–20 March 2015 for the ICME-driven storm and 30 May to 4 June 2013 for the CIR-driven one. Ionospheric data from three European ionosonde stations, namely Pruhonice (PQ), Sopron (SO) and Rome (RO), are investigated. The ionospheric F2-layer responses to these geomagnetic events are analyzed with the ionospheric foF2 and h’F2 parameters, the calculated deltafoF2 and deltahF2 values, the ratio of total electron content (rTEC) and Thermosphere, Ionosphere, Mesosphere, Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite Global Ultraviolet Imager (GUVI) thermospheric [O]/[N2] measurement data. The storm-time and the quiet-day mean values are also compared, and it can be concluded that the quiet-day curves are similar at all the stations while the storm-time ones show the latitudinal dependence during the development of the storm. As a result of the electron density comparison, during the two events, it can be concluded that the sudden storm commencement (SSC) that characterized the ICME induced a traveling atmospheric disturbance (TAD) seen in the European stations in the main phase, while this is not seen in the CIR-driven ionospheric storm, which shows a stronger and more prolonged negative effect in all the stations, probably due to the season and the depleted O/N2 ratio.

During the peak days of the 2019 Leonids and Geminids (16–19 November and 10–16 December), two ionograms/minute and one Skymap/minute campaign measurements were carried out at the Sopron (47.63°N, 16.72°E) and Průhonice (50.00°N, 14.60°E) Digisonde stations. The stations used frequencies between 1 and 17 MHz for the ionograms, and the Skymaps were made at 2.5 MHz. A temporary optical camera was also installed at Sopron with a lower brightness limit of +1 visual magnitude. The manual scaling of ionograms for November and December 2019 to study the behavior of the regular sporadic E layer was also completed. Although the distributions of the stations were similar, there were interesting differences despite the relative proximity of the stations. The optical measurements detected 88 meteors. A total of 376 meteor-induced traces were found on the Digisonde ionograms at a most probable amplitude (MPA) threshold of 4 dB and of these, 40 cases could be linked to reflections on the Skymaps, too. Of the 88 optical detections, 31 could be identified on the ionograms. The success of detections depends on the sensitivity of the instruments and the noise-filtering. Geometrically, meteors above 80 km and with an altitude angle of 40° or higher can be detected using the Digisondes.

Increased solar radiation during solar flare events can cause additional ionization and enhanced absorption of the electromagnetic (EM) waves in the ionosphere leading to partial or even total radio fade-outs. In this study, the ionospheric response to large solar flares has been investigated using the ionosonde data from Juliusruh (54.63° N, 13.37° E), Průhonice (49.98° N, 14.55° E) and San Vito (40.6° N, 17.8° E) Digisonde (DPS-4D) stations. We studied the effect of 13 intense (>C4.8) solar flares that occurred between 06:00 and 16:30 (UT, daytime LT = UT+1 h) from 04 to 10 September 2017 using three different methods. A novel method based on the amplitude data of the measured EM waves is used to calculate and investigate the relative absorption changes (compared to quiet period) occurring during the flares. The amplitude data are compared with the variation of the fmin parameter (fmin, the minimum measured frequency, it is considered as a qualitative proxy for the “non-deviative” radio wave absorption). Furthermore, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) measured by the Digisondes was used as well to quantify and characterize the fade-out events and the ionospheric absorption. In order to compare the three different methods, residuals have been defined for all parameters, which provide the percentage changes compared to the selected reference periods. Total and partial radio fade-outs, increased values (+0.4%–318%) of the fmin parameter, and +20%–1400% amplitude changes (measured at 2.5 and 4 MHz) were experienced during and after the investigated flares. Generally, the observed changes depended on the intensity, solar zenith angle and duration of the flare events. Although the three different methods have their own advantages/disadvantages and their limitations, the combination of them seems to be an efficient approach to monitor the ionospheric response to solar flares.

We investigate the differences between the effects of geomagnetic storms due to Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections (ICME) and due to Stream Interaction Regions or Corotating Interaction Regions (SIR/CIR) on the ionospheric F2-layer during the maximum of solar cycle 24. We have created a unique list of the ICME- and SIR/CIR-driven geomagnetic storm events for the time interval between November 2012 and October 2014. Finally, 42 clear ICME and 34 clear SIR/CIR events were selected for this analysis. The individual geomagnetic storm periods were grouped by seasons, time of day, and local time of Dstmin and were analyzed using three different methods: linear correlation analysis using 4-h averages of foF2 parameters and the geomagnetic indices (1st), daily variation of deltafoF2 (2nd), and 3D plotting: geomagnetic indices vs. time vs. deltafoF2 (3rd). The main phase day of the ICME- and SIR/CIR-induced geomagnetic storms was our main focus. We used manually evaluated ionospheric foF2 parameters measured at the Sopron ionosonde station and the geomagnetic indices (Kp, Dst, and AE) for this analysis. We have found that in most cases, the variation of the Dst index is the best indicator of the impact caused in the F2 layer. We conclude as well that the representation of the data by the third method gives a better description of the ICME and SIR/CIR-triggered storm behavior. In addition, our investigation shows that the SIR/CIR-related perturbations can be predicted with greater accuracy with the second method.

The sudden increase of X-radiation and EUV emission following solar flares causes additional ionization and increased absorption of electromagnetic (EM) waves in the Earth’s atmosphere. The solar flare impact on the ionosphere above Europe on 05 and 06 December 2006 was investigated using ground-based (ionosonde and VLF) and satellite-based data (Vertical Total Electron Content (VTEC) derived from GNSS observations and VLF measurements from DEMETER satellite). Based on the Kp and Dst indices, 05 December 2006 was a quiet day, while there was a geomagnetic storm on 06 December 2006. The total fade-out of the EM waves emitted by the ionosondes was experienced at all investigated stations during an X9 class flare on 05 December 2006. The variation of the fmin parameter (first echo trace observed on ionograms, it is a rough measure of the “non-deviative” absorption) and its difference between the quiet period and during the flares have been analyzed. A latitude dependent enhancement of fmin (2–9 MHz) and Δfmin (relative change of about 150%–300%) was observed at every station at the time of the X9 (on 05 December) and M6 (on 06 December) flares. Furthermore, we analyzed VTEC changes during and after the flare events with respect to the mean VTEC values of reference quiet days. During the X9 solar flare, VTEC increased depending on the latitude (2–3 TECU and 5%–20%). On 06 December 2006, the geomagnetic storm increased ionization (5–10 TECU) representing a “positive” ionospheric storm. However, an additional peak in VTEC related to the M6 flare could not be detected. We have also observed a quantifiable change in transionospheric VLF absorption of signals from ground transmitters detected in low Earth orbit associated with the X9 and M6 flare events on 05 and 06 December in the DEMETER data. Moreover, amplitude and phase of ground-based, subionospherically propagating VLF signals were measured simultaneously during the investigated flares to analyze ionosphere reaction and to evaluate the electron density profile versus altitude. For the X9 and M6 flare events we have also calculated the ionospheric parameters (sharpness, reflection height) important for the description and modelling of this medium under forced additional ionization.

The purpose of the present study is to investigate simultaneously pre-earthquake ionospheric and atmospheric disturbances by the application of different methodologies, with the ultimate aim to detect their possible link with the impending seismic event. Three large earthquakes in Mexico are selected (8.2 Mw, 7.1 Mw and 6.6 Mw during 8 and 19 September 2017 and 21 January 2016 respectively), while ionospheric variations during the entire year 2017 prior to 37 earthquakes are also examined. In particular, Total Electron Content (TEC) retrieved from Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) networks and Atmospheric Chemical Potential (ACP) variations extracted from an atmospheric model are analyzed by performing statistical and spectral analysis on TEC measurements with the aid of Global Ionospheric Maps (GIMs), Ionospheric Precursor Mask (IPM) methodology and time series and regional maps of ACP. It is found that both large and short scale ionospheric anomalies occurring from few hours to a few days prior to the seismic events may be linked to the forthcoming events and most of them are nearly concurrent with atmospheric anomalies happening during the same day. This analysis also highlights that even in low-latitude areas it is possible to discern pre-earthquake ionospheric disturbances possibly linked with the imminent seismic events.

Multiple factors can facilitate invasion success, with the absence of natural enemies, such as predators and parasites, recognised as conferring a significant advantage on invasive over native species. Pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus (Centrarchidae) represents one of the most successful freshwater fish invaders in Europe. Previous research has highlighted genetic differences between pumpkinseed populations in Türkiye and those in other European regions, attributed to rapid adaptation to new environmental conditions. This study aimed to investigate whether these highly adapted pumpkinseed populations in Türkiye benefit from a potential release from parasites, as proposed by the enemy-release hypothesis. Genetic characterisation of pumpkinseed populations from both European and Asian parts of Türkiye revealed that they share the same cytochrome c oxidase I haplotype as European populations. Microsatellite analysis indicated low genetic diversity, with STRUCTURE analysis confirming the clustering of all Turkish populations, suggesting a common source. Consistent with the low genetic diversity indicative of a small founding population, we observed a limited number of co-introduced parasite species, including the myxozoan Myxobolus dechtiari, the monogenean Onchocleidus dispar, and the digenean Posthodiplostomum centrarchi. Parasite infection by local parasites acquired in Türkiye was rare. Parasite diversity, species richness, and equitability were low, with only nine parasite taxa identified in all four pumpkinseed populations. The most diverse parasite community was found in Değirmenköy Reservoir, located in the European part of Türkiye, where seven parasite taxa were identified. While our study did not uncover genetically distinct pumpkinseed populations in Türkiye, the fish demonstrated resilience against most local parasite species, potentially providing them with an advantage over native species, aligning with the enemy-release hypothesis.

Abstract Background African annual killifishes (Nothobranchius spp.) are adapted to seasonally desiccating habitats (ephemeral pools), surviving dry periods as dormant eggs. Given their peculiar life history, geographic aspects of their diversity uniquely combine patterns typical for freshwater taxa (river basin structure and elevation gradient) and terrestrial animals (rivers acting as major dispersal barriers). However, our current knowledge on fine-scale inter-specific and intra-specific genetic diversity of African annual fish is limited to a single, particularly dry region of their distribution (subtropical Mozambique). Using a widespread annual killifish from coastal Tanzania and Kenya, we tested whether the same pattern of genetic divergence pertains to a wet equatorial region in the centre of Nothobranchius distribution. Results In populations of Nothobranchius melanospilus species group across its range, we genotyped a part of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (COI) gene (83 individuals from 22 populations) and 10 nuclear microsatellite markers (251 individuals from 16 populations). We found five lineages with a clear phylogeographic structure but frequent secondary contact. Mitochondrial lineages were largely congruent with main population genetic clusters identified on microsatellite markers. In the upper Wami basin, populations are isolated as a putative Nothobranchius prognathus, but include also a population from a periphery of the middle Ruvu basin. Other four lineages (including putative Nothobranchius kwalensis) coexisted in secondary contact zones, but possessed clear spatial pattern. Main river channels did not form apparent barriers to dispersal. The most widespread lineage had strong signal of recent population expansion. Conclusions We conclude that dispersal of a Nothobranchius species from a wet part of the genus distribution (tropical lowland) is not constrained by main river channels and closely related lineages frequently coexist in secondary contact zones. We also demonstrate contemporary connection between the Ruvu and Rufiji river basins. Our data do not provide genetic support for existence of recently described cryptic species from N. melanospilus complex, but cannot resolve this issue.

Abstract Background Anthropogenic factors can have a major impact on the contemporary distribution of intraspecific genetic diversity. Many freshwater fishes have finely structured and locally adapted populations, but their natural genetic structure can be affected by river engineering schemes across river basins, fish transfers in aquaculture industry and conservation management. The European bitterling (Rhodeus amarus) is a small fish that is a brood parasite of freshwater mussels and is widespread across continental Europe. Its range recently expanded, following sharp declines in the 1970s and 1980s. We investigated its genetic variability and spatial structure at the centre of its distribution at the boundary of three watersheds, testing the role of natural and anthropogenic factors in its genetic structure. Results Sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome B (CYTB) revealed that bitterling colonised central Europe from two Ponto-Caspian refugia, which partly defines its contemporary genetic structure. Twelve polymorphic microsatellite loci revealed pronounced interpopulation differentiation, with significant small-scale differentiation within the same river basins. At a large scale, populations from the Baltic Sea watershed (middle Oder and Vistula basins) were distinct from those from the Black Sea watershed (Danube basin), while populations from rivers of the North Sea watershed (Rhine, Elbe) originated from the admixture of both original sources. Notable exceptions demonstrated the potential role of human translocations across watersheds, with the upper River Oder (Baltic watershed) inhabited by fish from the Danube basin (Black Sea watershed) and a population in the southern part of the River Elbe (North Sea watershed) basin possessing a signal of admixture from the Danube basin. Conclusions Hydrography and physical barriers to dispersal are only partly reflected in the genetic structure of the European bitterling at the intersection of three major watersheds in central Europe. Drainage boundaries have been obscured by human-mediated translocations, likely related to common carp, Cyprinus carpio, cultivation and game-fish management. Despite these translocations, populations of bitterling are significantly structured by genetic drift, possibly reinforced by its low dispersal ability. Overall, the impact of anthropogenic factors on the genetic structure of the bitterling populations in central Europe is limited.

The European bitterling (Rhodeus amarus) is a small cyprinid fish whose populations declined markedly between 1950 and 1980. However, its range currently expands, partly due to human-assisted introductions. We determined the genetic variability and detailed spatial structure among bitterling populations in Central Europe and tested alternative hypotheses about colonization of this area. Twelve polymorphic microsatellite loci on a large sample of 688 individuals had been used to analyse genetic variability and population structure. Samples originated from 27 localities with emphasis on area of the Czech Republic where three major sea drainages (Black, Baltic, and Northern Sea) meet. Highly variable level of intrapopulation genetic variability had generally been detected and a recent decrease in numbers (“bottleneck”) had been indicated by genetic data among six populations. High level of interpopulation differentiation was identified even within the basins. There was a significant role of genetic drift and indications of low dispersal ability of R. amarus. Surprisingly, the Odra River was inhabited by two distinct populations without any genetic signatures of a secondary contact. Czech part of the Odra (Baltic basin) was colonized from the Danubian refugium (similarly to adjacent Danubian basin rivers including the Morava), while Polish part of the Odra was genetically similar to the populations in the Vistula River (Baltic basin), that has been colonized by a different (Eastern) phylogeographic lineage of R. amarus. Most Czech R. amarus populations were colonized from the Danubian refugium, suggesting potential for a human-mediated colonization of the Odra or Elbe Rivers by R. amarus. One Elbe basin population was genetically mixed from the two (Danubian and Eastern) phylogeographic lineages. In general the Czech populations of R. amarus were genetically stable except for a single population which has probably been recently introduced. This study reports observations of energetic ions upstream of the Earth’s quasi-parallel bow shock by Cluster at times when interspacecraft separation distances were large. We analyze two individual upstream ion events during high solar wind velocity conditions to compare the spatial evolution of partial energetic ion densities in front of the Earth’s bow shock along the magnetic field line. Using a bow shock model, we determine the distance of SC1 and SC3 to the bow shock surface parallel to the magnetic field. The CIS-HIA instrument on board Cluster provides partial energetic ion densities in four energy channels between 10 and 32 keV. Using the differences of the partial energetic ion densities observed on SC1 and SC3, and the distances of the spacecraft to the bow shock, we determine the spatial gradient of partial energetic ion densities at various distances from the bow shock. We show, for the first time, that the e-folding distance and the diffusion coefficient of the diffuse ions become unusually small when these ions interact with high-intensity waves generated by a strong field-aligned beam.
