Our previous study found that the observed rainfall diurnal variation over Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei shows the distinct signature of the effects of pollutants. Here we used the hourly rainfall data together with satellite-based daily information of aerosols and clouds to further investigate changes in heavy rainfall and clouds associated with aerosol changes. Because of the strong coupling effects, we also examined the sensitivity of these changes to moisture (specific humidity) variations. For heavy rainfall, three distinguished characteristics are identified: earlier start time, earlier peak time, and longer duration; and the signals are robust using aerosol indicators based on both aerosol optical depth and cloud droplet number concentration. In-depth analysis reveals that the first two characteristics occur in the presence of (absorbing) black carbon aerosols and that the third is related to more (scattering) sulfate aerosols and is sensitive to moisture abundance. Cloud changes are also evident, showing increases in cloud fraction, cloud top pressure, the liquid/ice cloud optical thickness and cloud water path and a decrease in ice cloud effective radius; and these changes are insensitive to moisture. Finally, the mechanisms for heavy rainfall characteristics are discussed and hypothesized.

With an increase in the rate of species extinction, we should choose right methods that are sustainable on the basis of appropriate science and human needs to conserve ecosystems and rare species. Species distribution modeling (SDM) uses 3S technology and statistics and becomes increasingly important in ecology. Brainea insignis (cycad-fern, CF) has been categorized a rare, endangered plant species, and thus was chosen as a target for the study. Five sampling schemes were created with different combinations of CF samples collected from three sites in Huisun forest station and one site, 10 km farther north from Huisun. Four models, MAXENT, GARP, generalized linear models (GLM), and discriminant analysis (DA), were developed based on topographic variables, and were evaluated by five sampling schemes. The accuracy of MAXENT was the highest, followed by GLM and GARP, and DA was the lowest. More importantly, they can identify the potential habitat less than 10% of the study area in the first round of SDM, thereby prioritizing either the field-survey area where microclimatic, edaphic or biotic data can be collected for refining predictions of potential habitat in the later rounds of SDM or search areas for new population discovery. However, it was shown unlikely to extend spatial patterns of CFs from one area to another with a big separation or to a larger area by predictive models merely based on topographic variables. Follow-up studies will attempt to incorporate proxy indicators that can be extracted from hyperspectral images or LIDAR DEM and substitute for direct parameters to make predictive models applicable on a broader scale.

We present statistically reconstructed mean annual winter (December–February) temperatures from the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River (24° N–34° N, 108° E–123° E within mainland China) extending back to 1736. The reconstructions are based on information regarding snowfall days from historical documents of the Yu-Xue-Fen-Cun archive recorded during the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911). This information is calibrated with regional winter temperature series spanning the period from 1951 to 2007. The gap from 1912 to 1950 is filled using early instrumental observations. With the reference period of 1951–2007, the 18th century was 0.76 °C colder, and the 19th century was 1.18 °C colder. However, since the 20th century, the climate has been in a warming phase, particularly in the last 30 yr, and the mean temperature from 1981 to 2007 was 0.25 °C higher than that of the reference period of 1951–2007, representing the highest temperatures of the past 300 yr. Uncertainty existed for the period prior to 1900, and possible causes of this uncertainty, such as physical processes involved in the interaction between temperature and snowfall days and changing of observers, are discussed herein.

The sulfur cycle and radiative effects of sulfate aerosol on climate are studied with a Global tropospheric Climate-Chemistry Model in which chemistry, radiation and dynamics are fully coupled. Production and removal mechanisms of sulfate are analyzed for the conditions of natural and anthropogenic sulfur emissions. Results show that the 1985 anthropogenic emission tripled the global SO2 and sulfate loadings from its natural value of 0.16 and 0.10 Tg S, respectively. Under natural conditions, the fraction of sulfate produced in-cloud is 74%; whereas with anthropogenic emissions, the fraction of in-cloud sulfate production slightly increased to 76%. Lifetimes of SO2 and sulfate under polluted conditions are estimated to be 1.7 and 2.0 days, respectively. The tripling of sulfate results in a direct radiative forcing of −0.43 W m−2 (clear-sky) or −0.24 W m−2 (all-sky), and a significant first indirect forcing of −1.85 W m−2, leading to a mean global cooling of about 0.1 K. Regional forcing and responses are significantly stronger than the global values. The first indirect forcing is sensitive to the relationship between aerosol concentration and cloud droplet number concentration which requires further investigation. Two aspects of chemistry-climate interaction are addressed. Firstly, the coupling effects lead to a slight decrease of 1% in global sulfate loading for both the cases of natural and anthropogenic added sulfur emissions. Secondly, only the indirect effect of sulfate aerosols yields significantly stronger signals in changes of near surface temperature and sulfate loading than changes due to intrinsic climate variability, while other responses to the indirect effect and all responses to the direct effect are below noise level.

We use measurements of recent decades, 1500-yr proxy data, and millennium model simulations with a variety of climate facings to study the temporal and spatial variability of summer precipitation over eastern China. Spectral analysis of the proxy data using multi-taper method reveals three statistically significant bidecadal (15–35-yr), pendadecadal (40–60-yr), and centennial (65–170-yr) oscillation bands. The results of wavelet filtering show that the amplitudes of these bands vary substantially through time depending on the temperature regimes. Weak centennial oscillation and strong pentadecadal oscillation occur in warm conditions, whereas both the centennial and pentadecadal oscillations are strong in cold conditions. A model/data intercomparison suggests that pentadecadal and bidecadal oscillations could be associated with internal variability of the climate system. It is also found that the increased frequency of drought-in-north/flood-in-south spatial pattern over eastern China during the last two decades is unusual in the past five centuries.

This study presents a compound optical film to improve luminance and uniformity to apply in side-LED (light-emitting diode) backlight module. LIGA (lithographie galvanoformung abformung) technology, soft lithography, and homemade gray scale mask were combined to fabricate microlens array. Optical film with variable size microlens array embedded with microvoids was designed and manufactured. FRED software was used to simulate optical performance. Microvoids were quantitatively embedded in the PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) optical film. Under the quantitative control of air pressure, those microvoids inside the optical film can cause light diffusion. The compound optical film with embedded microvoids, multiaspect ratio, and variable size microlens array can be fabricated quickly without substrate. Luminance colorimeter BM-7A from TOPCON was used to carry out the optical measurement. According to the measured data, the compound optical film with embedded microvoids can enhance the luminance up to 5% and the uniformity up to 6.5% ~ 8.4%. The optical efficiency can be improved via the compound optical film.

Three types of Au(I) N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and imidazole (Im) complexes, namely [Au(NHC)Cl], [Au(NHC)(Im)][NO3], and [Au(NHC)2][NO3], with two-, three-, and four-N-long alkyl chains, respectively, were synthesized and their mesomorphic properties investigated. Only the [Au(NHC)(Im)][NO3] series of compounds, adopting an m-shaped conformation in the solid state, showed liquid crystalline properties. For the molecules with three alkyl chains in particular, the Coulombic and hydrogen bonding interactions between the cationic head core and anionic NO3−, and the hydrophobic chain-chain interactions facilitate in sustaining the partially ordered motion, which is not observed for those with two and four arms. Abstract  Optical emission spectroscopy has been applied to study the OH radicals and O, H, and N active atoms produced by a high-voltage negative pulsed streamer corona discharge of N2 and H2O mixture gas in a needle-plate reactor at one atmosphere. The relative vibrational populations and the vibrational temperature of N2(C, v′) were determined. The effects of pulsed peak voltage, pulsed repetition rate, and the addition of O2 on the relative populations of OH(A2Σ) radicals, O(3p5P), Hα (3P), and N(3p4P) active atoms were investigated. It was found that the relative populations of those radicals increase with increasing pulsed peak voltage and pulsed repetition rate. The relative population of OH(A2Σ) radicals decreases with increasing O2 flow rate, while the relative populations of O (3p5P), Hα (3P), and N (3p4P) active atoms exhibit a maximum over the studied range of the O2 flow rate. By observing experimentally obtained photo-elastic fringe patterns and applying classical solutions for an infinite plate containing a circular hole under remote tension and the modified Hertz contact theory, a replaced superposition method is proposed. In this paper we use this method to investigate the state of stress around a near-surface circular hole in a semi-infinite plate under a concentrated load. The well-matched conditions between the reconstructed and experimental photoelastic fringe patterns indicate the applicability of the proposed method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Primary intraosseous carcinoma (PIOC) is a rare lesion in the jawbone. We report a case of de novo PIOC of the mandible, first seen by the family dentist. Our case highlights that radiographic examination is one of the most effective methods for detecting PIOCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report here an in planta method to produce transgenic Brassica napus plants. The procedure included Agrobacterium-mediated inoculation of plants at various development stages along with a vacuum infiltration step. The flowering stage appeared to be the most receptive stage for transformation and production of transgenic plants. In some cases, the flowering stage was induced either by cold treatment or by high density planting. Molecular and genetic analysis revealed that single and multiple copy events were generated and that the transgenes were transmitted to the T 1 and T 2 progeny in a Mendelian fashion. Recently, five novel fluorescent proteins have been isolated from non-bioluminescent species of reef-coral organisms and have been made available through ClonTech. They are AmCyan, AsRed, DsRed, ZsGreen and ZsYellow. These proteins are valuable as reporters for transformation because they do not require a substrate or external co-factor to emit fluorescence and can be tested in vivo without destruction of the tissue under study. We have evaluated them in a large range of plants, both monocots and dicots, and our results indicate that they are valuable reporting tools for transformation in a wide variety of crops. We report here their successful expression in wheat, maize, barley, rice, banana, onion, soybean, cotton, tobacco, potato and tomato. Transient expression could be observed as early as 24 h after DNA delivery in some cases, allowing for very clear visualization of individually transformed cells. Stable transgenic events were generated, using mannose, kanamycin or hygromycin selection. Transgenic plants were phenotypically normal, showing a wide range of fluorescence levels, and were fertile. Expression of AmCyan, ZsGreen and AsRed was visible in maize T1 seeds, allowing visual segregation to more than 99% accuracy. The excitation and emission wavelengths of some of these proteins are significantly different; the difference is enough for the simultaneous visualization of cells transformed with more than one of the fluorescent proteins. These proteins will become useful tools for transformation optimization and other studies. In this paper, we have adopted the hybrid method, which combines experimental and numerical methods, to investigate the dynamic behavior of perforated plates. It was found that the modal assurance criterion is a useful criterion to judge the degree of similarity between experimental and numerical models. The difference between the experimental and numerical models can be reduced via sensitivity testing and by checking the correlation coefficient. The equivalent material properties of the perforated plates were also obtained by the hybrid method. In addition, the curve-fitting technique was utilized to find the relationship of the mass remnant ratio with the parameter ratio. The functions obtained from the curve fitting can be used to predict accurately the equivalent material properties and resonant frequencies of perforated plates of the diagonal array. Magnetic fcc-Co75Ru25 (L12) phase and nonmagnetic fcc-Co25Ru75 (L12) phase are obtained by ion beam mixing in the respective Co–Ru multilayered films. Interestingly, in the Co50Ru50 multilayered films, a magnetic dual-fcc phase, identified to be a mixture consisting of a magnetic fcc-Co75Ru25 and a nonmagnetic fcc-Co25Ru75 phases, is observed at an irradiation dose of 3×1015 Xe+/cm2 and, upon further irradiation to a dose of 7×1015 Xe+/cm2, transformed into a nonmagnetic single-fcc phase with an alloy composition back to be Co50Ru50. An annular venturi injector (AVI) was proposed to form an intermittent flow structure in airlift pump for a good pump performance. Experiments were conducted to investigate the performance of the airlift pump with this AVI by comparing with pump performance with traditional injectors, at a series of air flow rates . It was found that airlift pump with AVI had higher flow rates of output liquid and particle, than those with the traditional injectors. This AVI promoted the gas core to collapse and formed an intermittent flow structure in rising pipe. For this intermittent structure, its slug length, firstly increased to a maximal value with increasing gas flow rate and then remained stable even under a high gas flow rate, while its slug frequency decreased with gas flow rate and then remained to a minimal value under a high gas flow rate.

Robot-path-planning seeks the shortest path to optimize the motion cost for robots. In robot-path-planning, the computational time will significantly increase if the moving targets rise largely, also known as the large-scale TSP. Hence, the current algorithms for the shortest path planning may be ineffective in the large-scale TSP. Aimed at the real-time applications that a robot must achieve as many goals as possible within limited time and the computational time of a robot has to be short enough to provide the next moving signal in time. Otherwise, the robot will be trapped into the idle status. This work proposes a hybrid approach, called the pre-clustering greedy heuristic, to tackle the reduction of computational time cost and achieve the near-optimal solutions. The proposed algorithm demonstrates how to lower the computational time cost drastically via smaller data of a sub-group, divided by k-means clustering, and the intra-cluster path planning. An algorithm is also developed to construct the nearest connections between any two unconnected clusters, ensuring the inter-cluster tour is the shortest. As a result, by utilizing the proposed heuristic, the computational time is significantly reduced and the path length is more efficient than the benchmark algorithms, while the input data grow up to a large scale. In applications, the proposed work can be applied practically to the path planning with large-scale moving targets, for example, the employment for the ball-collecting robot in a court.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were functionalized by polydopamine (PDA)-coating and mixed with natural rubber (NR) via latex compounding. Compared with pristine MWCNTs, the surface of MWCNT-PDA was covered by an amorphous and nanometer-scale PDA layer which had a large amount of oxygenic and nitric functional groups. So the MWCNT-PDA showed a perfect dispersion in NR matrix. The tensile strength of NR/MWCNT-PDA (5 phr) composites is 28.6 MPa, compared with the pure NR, which increased by 42%. For the electrical properties, when the content of MWCNTPDA or MWCNTs is 2 phr, the volume resistivity of NR/MWCNT-PDA composites falls to about 2.7·109 Ω·cm, compared with 3.3·1013 Ω·cm of NR/MWCNT composites. The thermal conductivity of NR composites increased only by 28.2% when 5 phr MWCNT-PDA was added. A model proposed by Nan was used to calculate the thermal conductivity of NR/MWCNT composites, and the calculated values were compared with the experimental values, the results showed that the interface thermal resistance is the main reason why MWCNTs could not significantly increase the thermal conductivity of natural rubber.

The protection of cultural heritage relates to an issue of identity. How a nation or a state tries to face to its history is often revealed on the protection of cultural heritage. Taiwan is as a country with complex history, especially the period after World War II. This article will work on some significant cases, regarded as ideological representation of identity. This article works on the cultural identity by observing and analyzing different cases of classified Historic Monuments. In different political periods, we see how the government tries to fabricate on the identity issue by working on Historic Monuments preservation. During the presidency of Chiang Kai-shek and his son Chiang Ching-kuo, the classification of Historic Monuments tried to focus on those make by former Chinese migrants. They tried hard to establish and reaffirm the ever existing “fact” of people in Taiwan. Whereas after the late 1980s and 1990s, after Chiang’s reign, local conscience has been awaken. Political ambience turned to a new era. This freedom of speech of post-Chiang’s reign encourages people to seek on their identity. The complex political situation of Taiwan makes this seeking cultural identity related to the seeking of independence of Taiwan. The respect to the aboriginal people also reoriented to include the preservation of their tribes and villages.

We describe the design and implementation of climate fast input/output (CFIO), a fast input/output (I/O) library for high-resolution climate models. CFIO provides a simple method for modelers to overlap the I/O phase with the computing phase automatically, so as to shorten the running time of numerical simulations. To minimize the code modifications required for porting, CFIO provides similar interfaces and features to parallel Network Common Data Form (PnetCDF), which is one of the most widely used I/O libraries in climate models. We deployed CFIO in three high-resolution climate models, including two ocean models (POP and LICOM) and one sea ice model (CICE). The experimental results show that CFIO improves the performance of climate models significantly versus the original serial I/O approach. When running with CFIO at 0.1° resolution with about 1000 CPU cores, we managed to reduce the running time by factors of 7.9, 4.6 and 2.0 for POP, CICE, and LICOM, respectively. We also compared the performance of CFIO against two existing libraries, PnetCDF and parallel I/O (PIO), in different scenarios. For scenarios with both data output and computations, CFIO decreases the I/O overhead compared to PnetCDF and PIO.

Cr3+/Tm3+ co-doped fluorogermanate glasses were prepared by melt-quenching technique, and their luminescent properties were investigated under excitation of Xenon lamp and 808 nm laser diode, respectively. Through strong sensitization of Cr3+, an enhanced 1.8 µm emission band of Tm3+: 3F4→3H6 can be achieved in an extremely extended excitation band of 380-900 nm. The possible energy transfer mechanism between Cr3+ and Tm3+ is rationally discussed. On the basis of experimental data, the highest energy transfer efficiency is up to 91.70%. Our results suggest this efficient Cr3+/Tm3+ co-doping system provides a selective pump mechanism for obtaining 1.8 µm laser and thus shows attractive applications in near-infrared fiber lasers and amplifiers.

Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients receiving entecavir (ETV) treatment might develop low-level viremia (LLV), which is proven to be associated with worse clinical outcomes, such as risk of drug-related mutations, progression to cirrhosis, and even hepatocellular carcinoma. This real-world prospective study evaluated the efficacy and safety of switching from ETV to tenofovir alafenamide fumarate (TAF) in CHB patients with LLV. From August 2020 to August 2023, 351 ETV-experienced CHB patients with LLV were enrolled from eight hospitals. Patients either continued ETV or switched to TAF. The primary efficacy endpoint was the complete virological response (CVR) at week 48; the safety endpoint was the first occurrence of any clinical adverse event during the treatment; and the renal safety and change in blood lipids were also assessed. Inverse probability treatment weighting (IPTW) generated 350.9 cases in the ETV group and 351.4 cases in the TAF group. After the 48-week treatment, the CVR and ALT normalization rates in the TAF group were 75.3% and 67.8%, which were significantly higher than 11.4% and 17.1% in the ETV group ( P < 0.001). The two strategies showed comparable impact on renal function and lipid profiles, regarding low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and the total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein (TC/HDL) ratio. Therefore, for ETV-treated patients with LLV, switching to TAF is superior compared with continuing ETV treatment in terms of virological and biochemical response, with non-inferior renal safety and lipid profiles.CLINICAL TRIALSThis study is registered with the Chinese Clinial Trial Registry as ChiCTR2400089257.

Naja atra , the Chinese cobra, is a major cause of snake envenomation in Asia, causing hundreds of thousands of clinical incidents annually. The current treatment, horse serum-derived antivenom, has unpredictable side effects and presents manufacturing challenges. This study focused on developing new-generation snake venom antidotes by using microbial phage display technology to derive nanobodies from an alpaca immunized with attenuated N. atra venom. Following confirmation of the immune response in the alpaca, we amplified V H H genes from isolated peripheral blood mononuclear cells and constructed a phage display V H H library of 1.0 × 10 7 transformants. After four rounds of biopanning, the enriched phages exhibited increased binding activity to N. atra venom. Four nanobody clones with high binding affinities were selected: aNAH1, aNAH6, aNAH7, and aNAH9. Specificity testing against venom from various snake species, including two Southeast Asian cobra species, revealed nanobodies specific to the genus Naja . An in vivo mouse venom neutralization assay demonstrated that all nanobodies prolonged mouse survival and aNAH6 protected 66.6% of the mice from the lethal dosage. These findings highlight the potential of phage display-derived nanobodies as valuable antidotes for N. atra venom, laying the groundwork for future applications in snakebite treatment.IMPORTANCEChinese cobra venom bites present a formidable medical challenge, and current serum treatments face unresolved issues. Our research applied microbial phage display technology to obtain a new, effective, and cost-efficient treatment approach. Despite interest among scientists in utilizing this technology to screen alpaca antibodies against toxins, the available literature is limited. This study makes a significant contribution by introducing neutralizing antibodies that are specifically tailored to Chinese cobra venom. We provide a comprehensive and unbiased account of the antibody construction process, accompanied by thorough testing of various nanobodies and an assessment of cross-reactivity with diverse snake venoms. Cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) mediate host defense against viral and intracellular bacterial infections and tumors. However, the magnitude of CTL response and their function needed to confer heterosubtypic immunity against influenza virus infection are unknown. We addressed the role of CD8 + T cells in the absence of any cross-reactive antibody responses to influenza viral proteins using an adenoviral vector expressing a 9mer amino acid sequence recognized by CD8 + T cells. Our results indicate that both CD8 + T cell frequency and function are crucial for heterosubtypic immunity. Low morbidity, lower viral lung titers, low to minimal lung pathology, and better survival upon heterosubtypic virus challenge correlated with the increased frequency of NP-specific CTLs. NP-CD8 + T cells induced by differential infection doses displayed distinct RNA transcriptome profiles and functional properties. CD8 + T cells induced by a high dose of influenza virus secreted significantly higher levels of IFN-γ and exhibited higher levels of cytotoxic function. The mice that received NP-CD8 + T cells from the high-dose virus recipients through adoptive transfer had lower viral titers following viral challenge than those induced by the low dose of virus, suggesting differential cellular programming by antigen dose. Enhanced NP-CD8 + T-cell functions induced by a higher dose of influenza virus strongly correlated with the increased expression of cellular and metabolic genes, indicating a shift to a more glycolytic metabolic phenotype. Viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), a highly conserved molecule in RNA viruses, has recently emerged as a promising drug target for broad-acting inhibitors. Through a Vero E6-based anti-cytopathic effect assay, we found that BPR3P0128, which incorporates a quinoline core similar to hydroxychloroquine, outperformed the adenosine analog remdesivir in inhibiting RdRp activity (EC 50 = 0.66 µM and 3 µM, respectively). BPR3P0128 demonstrated broad-spectrum activity against various severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants of concern. When introduced after viral adsorption, BPR3P0128 significantly decreased SARS-CoV-2 replication; however, it did not affect the early entry stage, as evidenced by a time-of-drug-addition assay. This suggests that BPR3P0128's primary action takes place during viral replication. We also found that BPR3P0128 effectively reduced the expression of proinflammatory cytokines in human lung epithelial Calu-3 cells infected with SARS-CoV-2. Molecular docking analysis showed that BPR3P0128 targets the RdRp channel, inhibiting substrate entry, which implies it operates differently-but complementary-with remdesivir. Utilizing an optimized cell-based minigenome RdRp reporter assay, we confirmed that BPR3P0128 exhibited potent inhibitory activity. However, an enzyme-based RdRp assay employing purified recombinant nsp12/nsp7/nsp8 failed to corroborate this inhibitory activity. This suggests that BPR3P0128 may inhibit activity by targeting host-related RdRp-associated factors. Moreover, we discovered that a combination of BPR3P0128 and remdesivir had a synergistic effect-a result likely due to both drugs interacting with separate domains of the RdRp.
