Electron transport in complex fluids, biology, and soft matter is a valuable characteristic in processes ranging from redox reactions to electrochemical energy storage. These processes often employ conductor-insulator composites in which electron transport properties are fundamentally linked to the microstructure and dynamics of the conductive phase. While microstructure and dynamics are well recognized as key determinants of the electrical properties, a unified description of their effect has yet to be determined, especially under flowing conditions. In this work, the conductivity and shear viscosity are measured for conductive colloidal suspensions to build a unified description by exploiting both recent quantification of the effect of flow-induced dynamics on electron transport and well-established relationships between electrical properties, microstructure, and flow. These model suspensions consist of conductive carbon black (CB) particles dispersed in fluids of varying viscosities and dielectric constants. In a stable, well-characterized shear rate regime where all suspensions undergo self-similar agglomerate breakup, competing relationships between conductivity and shear rate were observed. To account for the role of variable agglomerate size, equivalent microstructural states were identified using a dimensionless fluid Mason number, Mnf, which allowed for isolation of the role of dynamics on the flow-induced electron transport rate. At equivalent microstructural states, shear-enhanced particle-particle collisions are found to dominate the electron transport rate. This work rationalizes seemingly contradictory experimental observations in literature concerning the shear-dependent electrical properties of CB suspensions and can be extended to other flowing composite systems. We investigate the aging behavior in a well-studied model system comprised of a colloidal suspension of thermoreversible adhesive hard spheres (AHS) but thermally quenched below the gel transition to much larger depths than previously studied. The aging behavior in the model AHS system is monitored by small amplitude oscillatory shear rheology measurements conducted while rapidly quenching from the liquid state at 40 °C to a temperature below the gel temperature, and new, anomalous aging behaviors are observed. Shallow quenches lead to monotonic development of the elastic modulus with time, consistent with prior reports for the development of a homogeneous gel [Gordon et al., J. Rheol. 61, 23–34 (2017)]. However, for deeper quenches, a unique and new phenomenon is reported, namely, after an initial rise in the modulus, a reproducible drop in the modulus is observed, followed by a plateau in the modulus value. This drop can be gradual or sudden and the extent of the drop depends on the quench depth. After this drop in the modulus, AHS gel evolves toward a quench-path independent state over the experimental timescale. These effects of the extent of quenching on aging behavior are hypothesized to be a consequence of quenching into different underlying thermodynamic states of colloidal gels and the possible influence of the adhesive glass dynamical arrest for the deepest quenches. The research connects homogeneous gelation with heterogeneous gel formation due to phase separation and shows that the extent of quench can be used as an independent parameter to govern the rheological response of the arrested gel. Acylated peptides composed of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists modified with a fatty acid side chain are an important class of therapeutics for type 2 diabetes and obesity but are susceptible to an unusual physical instability in the presence of hydrophobic surfaces, i.e., spontaneous emulsification, also known as ouzo formation in practice. In this work, light scattering, small-angle X-ray scattering, and circular dichroism measurements are used to characterize the physical properties of the semaglutide colloidal phase, including size distribution, shape, secondary structure, internal structure, and internal composition, as a function of solution physico-chemical conditions. The existence and size of the colloids formed are successfully predicted by a classical Rayleigh model, which identifies the parameters controlling their size and formation. Colloid formation is found to be catalyzed by hydrophobic surfaces, and formation rates are modeled as an autocatalytic reaction, enabling the formation of a master curve for various surfaces that elucidates the mechanism. Surfaces differ due to differences in surface wettability, which can be correlated with Hansen solubility parameters. This work provides insights into this unusual colloidal phenomenon and guides the peptide synthesis process and drug product formulation in the pharmaceutical industry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An improved population balance‐based rheological constitutive framework for polydisperse aggregating suspensions is derived by incorporating detailed models for orthokinetic and perikinetic aggregation and shear breakage processes. The framework accounts for critical properties such as dynamic arrest, viscoelasticity, kinematic hardening, thixotropy, and yield stress to generate a full range of thixotropic elasto‐viscoplastic (TEVP) response. Additionally, the model is thermodynamically consistent because the dynamics and timescales are completely determined by internal structural and kinetic variables. The model connects the rheological response to the structural descriptors such as the size distribution of agglomerates, mean sizes, fractal dimension, and agglomerate volume fraction. Predictions are compared against a wide range of shear rheology measurements data for model thixotropic suspensions of fumed silica and carbon black, including large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS), as well as ultra‐small angle neutron scattering under steady shear (Rheo‐uSANS). Novel measurements of the spatiotemporal microstructure of a continuous shear thickening colloidal suspension under shear cessation and reversal using small angle neutron scattering in a 1–2 shear cell are presented for moderate to high Péclet numbers. In the shear cessation experiments from high Péclet shear flow, two-step relaxation mechanism is found. Particles first readily diffuse on a characteristic timescale of single particle Brownian motion, followed by slower relaxation dynamics on a timescale of short-time self-diffusion when caging effects start dominating. In the shear reversal experiment, the unchanged scattering intensity and the quick flip in anisotropic structure around the shear thickened state suggest the persistence of hydroclusters without transitioning through the equilibrium structure, at least in a time resolution of 0.01 s. Access to the time evolution of microstructure provides valuable insights into the spatiotemporal details of interparticle interactions governing colloidal suspension rheology, such as Brownian, hydrodynamic, and nanotribological forces. A novel shear thickening suspoemulsion is formulated and studied with a new rheo-microscope instrument. The experimental fluid system is comprised of a immiscible blend of Newtonian, low molecular weight poly(dimethylsiloxane) and a shear thickening suspension of colloidal silica in poly(ethylene glycol). The blend is studied as a function of composition where phase inversion is evident at low shear rates and is found to be shear rate dependent. A shear thickening viscosity curve is observed when blends comprised of shear thickening fluid dispersed as droplets are subjected to high shear rates. Dispersing a continuously shear thickening fluid, Øsilica= 0.42, results in continuously shear thickening response from the blend. Dispersing a discontinuously shear thickening fluid, Øsilica= 0.51, results in bulk shear thickening that can also be discontinuous. Shear thickening in the final suspoemulsion is consistently first detected at ØSTF= 0.2, with the magnitude of shear thickening being dependent on the particle concentration in the STF phase. The onset of shear thickening also corresponds with the formation of extended droplet structures in the fluid. The complex properties of these suspoemulsions and the ability to formulate dispersed droplet morphologies in this mixture are shown to result from the underlying shear thickening rheology of the dispersed phase.

Starting from a suspension of elastic dumbbells or chain-like particle aggregates as a simple model of a viscoelastic liquid, the rheological equation of state is inductively derived into which the concept of an "elastic strain component" (recoverable strain) is incorporated and can be understood as a nonlinear extension of the so-called "generalized Maxwell model." Here, the liquid is characterized by a sequence of nested continua, each associated with an elasticity law. The consideration of the directional dependence of the mobility of the structural elements requires that the behavior of the liquids represented in this way generally deviates from a Weissenberg liquid. Understanding the interfacial structure–property relationship of complex fluid–fluid interfaces is increasingly important for guiding the formulation of systems with targeted interfacial properties, such as those found in multiphase complex fluids, biological systems, biopharmaceuticals formulations, and many consumer products. Mixed interfacial flow fields, typical of classical Langmuir trough experiments, introduce a complex interfacial flow history that complicates the study of interfacial properties of complex fluid interfaces. In this article, we describe the design, implementation, and validation of a new instrument capable of independent application of controlled interfacial dilation and shear kinematics on fluid interfaces. Combining the Quadrotrough with both in situ Brewster angle microscopy and neutron reflectometry provides detailed structural measurements of the interface at the mesoscale and nanoscale in relationship to interfacial material properties under controlled interfacial deformation histories. In this work, we outline the development of a thermodynamically consistent microscopic model for a suspension of aggregating particles under arbitrary, inertia-less deformation. As a proof-of-concept, we show how the combination of a simplified population-balance-based description of the aggregating particle microstructure along with the use of the single-generator bracket description of nonequilibrium thermodynamics, which leads naturally to the formulation of the model equations. Notable elements of the model are a lognormal distribution for the aggregate size population, a population balance-based model of the aggregation and breakup processes and a conformation tensor-based viscoelastic description of the elastic network of the particle aggregates. The resulting example model is evaluated in steady and transient shear forces and elongational flows and shown to offer predictions that are consistent with observed rheological behavior of typical systems of aggregating particles. Additionally, an expression for the total entropy production is also provided that allows one to judge the thermodynamic consistency and to evaluate the importance of the various dissipative phenomena involved in given flow processes.
