Aim: We assessed the impact of a 3-year change-percent in adiposity measures on regression and pre-diabetes (Pre-DM) progression among Iranian adults. Methods: Three-year change-percent in body weight (BW), body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and visceral adiposity index (VAI) were calculated for 1458 Pre-DM subjects (mean age of 53.0 ± 13.7, 46.8% men), participated in the third examination of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (2006–2008). Multinomial logistic regression models were used to estimate relative risk ratios (RRRs) of the outcomes [i.e., regression to normal glucose regulation (NGR), persistence in Pre-DM, and progression to newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes (T2D)] across 3-year change categories of adiposity measures (i.e., ≥ 5% decrease, 0–5% decrease, increase). Results: Over nine years of follow-up, 37.7 and 39.0% returned to NGR and progressed to T2D, respectively. Decreased BW (0–5 and ≥ 5%) was associated with regression to NGR (RRRs = 1.44, 95% CIs = 1.05–1.98, and 2.64, 1.63–4.28, respectively). Decreased BMI and WC ≥ 5% were also associated with regression to NGR (RRRs = 1.63, 95% CI = 1.01–2.64; 1.69, 1.20–2.37, respectively). Changes in WHR and VAI were not associated with Pre-DM regression or progression. Pre-DM subjects with ≥ 5% BW loss had a constant FSG level overtime and a lower overall mean of FSG (116 vs. 111 and 112 mg/dL, P = 0.023 and 0.009, respectively) and 2 h-SG (154 vs. 165 and 168 mg/dL) compared to those had 0–5% BW loss or BW gain. Conclusion: Short-term management of adiposity measures increases the regression probability to NGR. Targeting BW loss seems a more potent predictor of Pre-DM reversion among the adiposity measures. Background: Obesity is a complex, diverse and multifactorial disease that has become a major public health concern in the last decades. The current classification systems relies on anthropometric measurements, such as BMI, that are unable to capture the physiopathological diversity of this disease. The aim of this study was to redefine the classification of obesity based on the different H-NMR metabolomics profiles found in individuals with obesity to better assess the risk of future development of cardiometabolic disease. Materials and methods: Serum samples of a subset of the Di@bet.es cohort consisting of 1387 individuals with obesity were analyzed by H-NMR. A K-means algorithm was deployed to define different H-NMR metabolomics-based clusters. Then, the association of these clusters with future development of cardiometabolic disease was evaluated using different univariate and multivariate statistical approaches. Moreover, machine learning-based models were built to predict the development of future cardiometabolic disease using BMI and waist-to-hip circumference ratio measures in combination with H-NMR metabolomics. Results: Three clusters with no differences in BMI nor in waist-to-hip circumference ratio but with very different metabolomics profiles were obtained. The first cluster showed a metabolically healthy profile, whereas atherogenic dyslipidemia and hypercholesterolemia were predominant in the second and third clusters, respectively. Individuals within the cluster of atherogenic dyslipidemia were found to be at a higher risk of developing type 2 DM in a 8 years follow-up. On the other hand, individuals within the cluster of hypercholesterolemia showed a higher risk of suffering a cardiovascular event in the follow-up. The individuals with a metabolically healthy profile displayed a lower association with future cardiometabolic disease, even though some association with future development of type 2 DM was still observed. In addition, H-NMR metabolomics improved the prediction of future cardiometabolic disease in comparison with models relying on just anthropometric measures. Background: There is limited evidence regarding the modifying effects of parents' age at childbirth on the relationship between air pollution and obesity in plateau areas. This study aimed to explore the association between particulate matter (PM) and child obesity, specifically investigating whether parents' age at childbirth could modify this relationship in the Tibetan plateau, China. Methods: Satellite-based random forest models were used to estimate the concentrations of PM2.5 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters ≤ 2.5 μm), PMc (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters between 2.5 μm and 10 μm), and PM10 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters ≤ 10 μm). Linear and logistic regression models were employed to assess associations between PM exposure and obesity indicators, and effect estimates of PM across different particle sizes were compared. Results: The study comprised 2,015 children under five years old. Postnatal exposure to PM was positively associated with overweight and obesity (OWO), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and body mass index (BMI). Among these pollutants, PM10 exhibited the strongest association with BMI and OWO, whereas PMc showed the strongest association with WHR. An interquartile range (IQR) increase in PM2.5 (5.67 µg/m3), PMc (5.25 µg/m3), and PM10 (11.06 µg/m3) was positively associated with OWO (odd ratio [OR] for PM2.5 = 1.52, 95% confidence interval [CI] for PM2.5 = 1.24 to 1.85; OR for PMc = 1.50, 95% CI for PMc = 1.19 to 1.88; OR for PM10 = 1.56, 95% CI for PM10 = 1.25 to 1.96), respectively. Stratified analysis by parents' age at childbirth indicated that the effects of PM on obesity indicators were more pronounced in the advanced age group. Conclusions: Long-term exposure to PM was positively associated with OWO, WHR, and BMI. Background: Numerous studies have indicated an obesity paradox in observational research on aging health, where being normal weight or underweight adversely affects cognitive function, while moderate obesity may offer protective benefits. This study aims to investigate the association between body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), abdominal volume index (AVI), and the joint effect of BMI and HC on cognitive impairment in older Chinese people. Methods: A total of 10,579 participants aged 65 years and older from the 2018 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) were included in this cross-sectional study. BMI, WC, HC, WHtR, WHR, and AVI were calculated from height, weight, WC, and HC measurements, where weight, WC, and HC were obtained by direct measurement. Mini-Mental State Examination was used to assess cognitive impairment. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were estimated using binary logistic regression. Non-linear correlations were investigated using restricted cubic spline curves. Results: In multivariate logistic regression models fully adjusted for confounding variables, our analyses showed significant negative associations of WC [OR 0.93 (95%CI 0.88–0.98), P =.012], HC [OR 0.92 (95%CI 0.87–0.97), P =.004], lower WHR (Q2) [OR 0.85 (95%CI 0.72-1.00), P =.044], and AVI [OR 0.93 (95%CI 0.88–0.98), P =.011] with cognitive impairment. Nonlinear curve analysis showed that the risk of cognitive impairment was lowest when the BMI was about 25.5 kg/m², suggesting that the optimal BMI for older Chinese people to maintain good cognitive ability may be in the overweight range. In addition, there was a non-linear "N" shaped relationship between HC and cognitive impairment, with HC having the highest risk of cognitive impairment at about 82 cm and the lowest risk at about 101 cm. The joint effects analysis indicated that the lowest risk was observed among those with normal or higher BMI but higher HC compared with participants with normal BMI levels and lower HC levels. Conclusion: In older Chinese people, a low-waisted and high-hip circumference body figure is favorable for cognitive function in older people. It also found a significant association between AVI and cognitive impairment. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is one of the most aggressive subtypes of breast cancer with higher rates of recurrence and distant metastasis, as well as decreased 5-year survival rates. Racial disparities are evident in the incidence and mortality rates of triple negative breast cancer particularly increased in young African American women. Concurrently, young African American women have multiple risk factors for TNBC including higher rates of premenopausal abdominal obesity (higher waist-hip ratio) and lower rates of breastfeeding with higher parity, implicating these factors as potentially contributors to poor outcomes. By understanding the mechanisms of how premenopausal obesity and lack of breastfeeding may be associated with increased risk of triple negative breast cancer, we can determine the best strategies for intervention and awareness to improve outcomes in TNBC. Background: Obesity has emerged as an epidemic and is known to be associated with multiple co-morbidities, contributing to increased morbidity and mortality. Body-mass index (BMI) has been traditionally used to assess obesity in an individual but abdominal obesity markers are being claimed to have a stronger association with adverse cardiovascular outcome as compared to BMI. However, there are only a few studies that have evaluated these indices in Asian Indians. Aims and Objectives: The study was conducted to compare BMI and waist measurement based indices among hypertensive adults and their association with adverse cardiovascular outcomes. The secondary objectives were to determine any gender-based differences among anthropometric indices and improved predictability on adding waistbased indices to BMI. Materials and Methods: An observational study was conducted to analyse association of anthropometric indices such as BMI, A body shape index (ABSI), Waist--hip ratio (WHR), Waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), Lean body mass-to-weight ratio, and Waist circumference (WC), with risk of cerebrovascular accidents (CVA) and coronary artery disease (CAD) in Indian hypertensive adults. Results: In total, 400 participants were included and female subjects were noted to have higher prevalence of obesity in our study population. Only 33.25% patients had BMI in recommended range and the numbers were even lower for WHtR and WHR. BMI and ABSI were found to have a weak association with development of co-morbidities while measures of abdominal obesity such as WHR, WC, and WHtR were found to have consistently strong association with CVA and CAD with high sensitivity and negative predictive values. Conclusion: More accurate markers of abdominal obesity can help in better assessment of cardiovascular risk among high-risk population to improve the overall outcome. Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) have varying difficulties in achieving weight loss by lifestyle intervention, which may depend on adipose tissue metabolism. The objective was to study baseline subcutaneous adipose tissue gene expression as a prediction of weight loss by lifestyle intervention in obese/overweight women with PCOS. This is a secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial where women with PCOS, aged 18–40 and body mass index (BMI) ≥ 27 were initially randomized to either a 4-month behavioral modification program or minimal intervention according to standard care. Baseline subcutaneous adipose tissue gene expression was related to weight change after the lifestyle intervention. A total of 55 obese/overweight women provided subcutaneous adipose samples at study entry. Weight loss was significant after behavioral modification (−2.2%, p = 0.0014), while there was no significant weight loss in the control group (−1.1%, p = 0.12). In microarray analysis of adipose samples, expression of 40 genes differed significantly between subgroups of those with the greatest weight loss or weight gain. 10 genes were involved in metabolic pathways including glutathione metabolism, gluconeogenesis, and pyruvate metabolism. Results were confirmed by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in all 55 subjects. Expressions of GSTM5, ANLN, and H3C2 correlated with weight change (R = −0.41, p = 0.002; R = −0.31, p = 0.023 and R = −0.32, p = 0.016, respectively). GSTM5, involved in glutathione metabolism, was the strongest predictor of weight loss, and together with baseline waist-hip ratio (WHR) explained 31% of the variation in body weight change. This study shows that baseline subcutaneous adipose tissue genes play a role for body weight outcome in response to lifestyle intervention in overweight/obese women with PCOS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction Veterans are at risk for mental and physical health problems but may not seek traditional health care services. Wellness-based interventions, including exercise and nutrition, have been associated with improvements in physical and mental health among this population. This study explores the acceptability, feasibility, and efficacy of a 3-month health and fitness program for veterans. Materials and Methods Participants in 2 time-based cohorts from 2019 to 2023 (cohort 1: n  = 261; cohort 2: n  = 256) were cleared by a physician to participate. Participants then completed a fitness test and self-reported surveys (e.g. quality of life, sleep, and pain) before and after the 3-month program. Participants were recruited to participate at one of three sites: Boston, MA Fort Myers, FL, or Tampa, FL. The 3-month program consisted of weekly, supervised group fitness and one-on-one sessions, nutritional consultations, yoga, and other wellness activities. Primary program outcomes were measured by fitness assessments, self-report surveys, program completion, and program satisfaction. Fitness assessments included measures of weight, body mass index, grip strength, waist to hip ratio, body fat, lean mass, fat mass, heart rate, and blood pressure (BP). Self-report measures included quality of life, depression, loneliness, sleep quality, pain intensity, and pain interference. Results In cohort 1, significant improvements were found for measures of weight (P  = .01), left-handed grip strength (P  < .01), body fat percent (P  < .01), and quality of life (P  < .01). In cohort 2, significant improvements were found for measures of waist:hip ratio (P  = .02), right and left-handed grip strength (P  < .01), body mass index (P  = .02), body fat percent (P  < .01), and quality of life (P  = .02). For both cohorts, pain intensity (cohort 1: P  = .01, cohort 2: P  < .001) and pain interference (cohort 1: P  = .02, cohort 2: P  < .001) increased significantly. Conclusions These data suggest that a 3-month health and fitness program for veterans is acceptable and feasible and may improve physical and mental health outcomes. The study aimed to investigate the prevalence of neuropathic pain in patients after surgical digital amputation. A total of 58 patients underwent digital amputation, with 30 participants providing data on 39 digits. The study found that 59% of patients experienced significant neuropathic pain at three months post-surgery. The study also assessed range of motion, grip strength, and return to work, with 24% of patients not returning to work at three months. Introduction: This study aimed to identify the factors most strongly associated with an increased atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk score in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Methods: This cross-sectional study included 4698 patients with T2D over an 11-year period (2010–2021). Patients were categorized into four groups based on their 10-year ASCVD risk score (< 5%, 5–7.5%, 7.5–20%, and > 20%). Multinominal regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between various modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors and the ASCVD risk score. Results: Of the patients, 35.9% had a 10-year ASCVD risk score below 5%, 12.6% had a score between 5% and 7.5%, 30.8% had a score between 7.5% and 20%, and 19.7% had a score above 20%. Higher ASCVD risk scores were significantly associated with elevated waist-to-hip ratio (WHR > 0.93), pulse pressure, uric acid, triglycerides, and decreased glomerular filtration rate (all p-values < 0.05). WHR demonstrated the strongest association with higher ASCVD risk scores (OR: 4.55, 95% CI: 2.94–7.03, p < 0.001) when comparing patients with ASCVD scores > 5% to those with scores < 5%. Conclusion: WHR was independently associated with higher ASCVD risk scores in patients with T2D. Incorporating WHR, along with traditional risk factors, could improve ASCVD risk assessments in this population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is one of the most significant public health issues worldwide, which increases the risk of various diseases. Epidemiological evidence suggests that newer anthropometric measures, such as a body shape index (ABSI) and body roundness index (BRI) can be used to predict MetS. However, anthropometric measures to predict the risk for MetS should be clarified in each population. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the association between ABSI, BRI, and MetS risk factors among overweight and obese Iranian adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 347 overweight and obese individuals [body mass index (BMI) > 25 kg/m2] aged 20–50 years in Tabriz, Iran. Anthropometric measures were assessed, including BMI, waist circumference (WC), and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). Additionally, ABSI and BRI were calculated based on the collected data. Blood pressure was measured using standard protocols. Body composition also was measured using body impedance analysis (BIA). Enzymatic-colorimetric methods were used to assess serum glucose and lipids, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits were used to measure insulin levels. Results: Participants with higher ABSI exhibited significantly higher systolic blood pressure (SBP) (P = 0.001), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (P = 0.010), and triglyceride (TG) levels (P < 0.001), along with significantly lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels (P < 0.001). In the crude model, individuals in the highest ABSI tertile (tertile 3) had a higher likelihood of having higher SBP (OR: 1.032; 95% CI: 1.014–1.051) and DBP (OR: 1.33; 95% CI: 1.009–1.058), as well as a significant association with lower HDL-C levels (OR: 0.945; 95% CI: 0.918–0.973). Additionally, both ABSI tertile 2 (OR: 1.005; 95% CI: 1.001–1.008) and tertile 3 (OR: 0.993; 95% CI: 1.003–1.011) were linked to a higher likelihood of having higher TG levels. No significant associations were found between BRI tertiles and MetS risk factors. Conclusion: According to our results, ABSI and BRI are poor predictors of MetS risk variables, in overweight and obese individuals. High ABSI is only slightly linked with high SBP, DBP, and TG and low HDL-C. However, longitudinal and long-term investigations are encouraged to verify the efficacy of these two measures. Background: Hormone fluctuations in women are accompanied by an increase in obesity. Although obesity has various causes, the interaction between obesity and menopausal status remains unclear. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the interaction between lifestyle physical activities (PAs), such as occupational and household activities, and purposeful exercise, such as sports, with appetite and their correlation with body composition during the menopausal transition (MT) and postmenopausal (PM) phases. Design: This was a descriptive cross-sectional design. Methods: Women aged 42–62 years, in the MT or PM phases, were included. PA and appetite were measured using the validated Beacke questionnaire and the Simplified Nutritional Appetite Questionnaire, respectively. Body weight, height, waist circumference, and hip circumference were measured to estimate the body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). Results: A total of 101 women were included in the study. A significant positive relationship was found between appetite and PA in the MT group (r = 0.55, p < 0.001). In the MT group, PA (β = −0.38, p = 0.009) and appetite (β = 0.42, p = 0.004) predicted 16% of the BMI, while PA and appetite predicted 16% of the WHR. Only PA contributed significantly to the prediction of WHR (β = −0.33, p = 0.0.02). In the PM group, PA and appetite predicted 15% of the WHR (p = 0.030), and PA was a significant predictor of the WHR (β = −0.29, p = 0.0.03). There was no significant difference between the BMI and WHR in active women who regularly performed purposeful exercise compared to inactive women during the PM phase (p > 0.05). However, the appetite of active women was higher than of inactive women (p = 0.003). Conclusions: Menopausal status was effective on obesity indices, appetite, and PA. Lifestyle PA was superior to appetite in predicting obesity indices during the MT and PM phases, and particularly during PM; hence, PA was more important than exercise in determining obesity. Interestingly, while both factors predicted obesity measures, it was mainly physical activity that played a key role in affecting the waist-to-hip ratio. In the postmenopausal group, physical activity and appetite also influenced waist-to-hip ratio, but there was no significant difference in BMI and WHR between women who exercised and those who did not. However, active women reported a higher level of appetite compared to inactive women. In conclusion, the study found that menopausal status impacts body composition and appetite. Background: Considering differences in body composition and inflammatory status between sexes, as well as recent recommendations advocating for personalized dietary approaches, this study aimed to explore how sex influences weight loss, changes in body composition, and inflammatory status in subjects with grade I and II obesity undergoing a 45-day of the Very Low-Energy Ketogenic Therapy (VLEKT). Methods: Participants (21 premenopausal females and 21 males), included in the study adhered to the 45-day of the VLEKT and underwent assessments of anthropometric parameters (weight, height, body mass index—BMI –, and waist circumference), body composition via bioelectrical impedance analysis, and inflammatory status measured by high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels at baseline and post-intervention. Results: At baseline, premenopausal females and males did not differ in BMI (p = 0.100) and hs-CRP levels (p = 0.948). Males demonstrated overall larger benefits than premenopausal females from the VLEKT in terms of weight loss (Δ% = − 11.63 ± 1.76 vs − 8.95 ± 1.65 kg, p < 0.001), fat mass (Δ% = − 30.84 ± 12.00 vs -21.36 ± 4.65 kg, p = 0.002), and hs-CRP levels (Δ% = − 41.42 ± 21.35 vs − 22.38 ± 17.30 mg/L, p = 0.003). Of interest, in males phase angle values are statistically improved compared to female (Δ% = 17.11 ± 9.00 vs 7.05 ± 3.30°, p < 0.001). Conclusion: These findings underscore the importance of considering sex-specific responses in personalized obesity treatment strategies, particularly dietary interventions like VLEKTs. Accurate assessment of body composition is essential for evaluating the risk of chronic disease. 3D body shape, obtainable using smartphones, correlates strongly with body composition. We present a novel method that fits a 3D body mesh to a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) silhouette (emulating a single photograph) paired with anthropometric traits, and apply it to the multi-phase Fenland study comprising 12,435 adults. Using baseline data, we derive models predicting total and regional body composition metrics from these meshes. In Fenland follow-up data, all metrics were predicted with high correlations (r > 0.86). We also evaluate a smartphone app which reconstructs a 3D mesh from phone images to predict body composition metrics; this analysis also showed strong correlations (r > 0.84) for all metrics. The 3D body shape approach is a valid alternative to medical imaging that could offer accessible health parameters for monitoring the efficacy of lifestyle intervention programmes. Background Antiretroviral therapy (ART)-related weight gain is of particular concern in people with HIV (PWH). Although weight gain was observed among PWH receiving tenofovir alafenamide (TAF), little is known about the potential reversibility after TAF discontinuation. We evaluated weight and metabolic changes 12 months after TAF discontinuation in the Swiss HIV Cohort Study. Methods We included participants who received at least 6 months of TAF-containing ART between January 2016 and March 2023. Using multivariable mixed-effect models, changes in weight and lipid levels were compared between individuals who continued TAF and those who switched to one of the following TAF-free regimens: (1) tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF)-based ART, (2) dolutegravir/lamivudine (DTG/3TC), or (3) long-acting cabotegravir/rilpivirine (CAB/RPV). Results Of 6555 participants (median age 54 years, 24.3% female, 13% Black), 5485 (83.7%) continued, and 1070 (16.3%) stopped TAF. Overall, discontinuing TAF was associated with an adjusted mean weight change of −0.54 kg (95% confidence interval [CI] −.98 to −.11) after 12 months. In stratified analyses, switching from TAF to TDF led to an adjusted mean weight decrease of −1.84 kg (95% CI −2.72 to −.97), and to a decrease in mean total cholesterol (−0.44 mmol/L) and triglycerides (−0.38 mmol/L) after 12 months. Switching from TAF-based ART to DTG/3TC (−0.17 kg, 95% CI −.82 to.48) or long-acting CAB/RPV (−0.64 kg, 95% CI −2.16 to.89) did not lead to reductions in weight. Conclusions Replacing TAF with TDF in PWH led to a decrease in body weight and an improved lipid profile within 1 year. Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most frequently diagnosed cancer worldwide. Diabetes and CRC share many overlapping lifestyle risk factors such as obesity, heavy alcohol use, and diet. This study aims to develop a risk scoring system for CRC prediction among diabetes patients using routine medical records. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using electronic health records of Hong Kong. Patients who received diabetes care in public general outpatient clinics between 2010 and 2019 and had no cancer history were identified, and followed up until December 2019. The outcome was diagnosis of CRC during follow-up. For model building, predictors were first selected using random survival forest, and weights were subsequently assigned to selected predictors using Cox regression. Results: Of the 386,325 patients identified, 4,199 patients developed CRC during a median follow-up of 6.2 years. The overall incidence rate of CRC was 1.93 per 1000 person-years. In the final scoring system, age, waist-to-hip ratio, and serum creatinine were included as predictors. The C-index on test set was 0.651 (95%CI: 0.631-0.669). Elevated serum creatinine (=127 µmol/L) could be a potential important predictor of increased CRC risk. Conclusion: While obesity is a well-known risk factor for CRC, renal dysfunction could be potentially linked to an elevated risk of CRC among diabetes patients. Introduction: Several blood markers of inflammation are elevated in prostate cancer (PCa) and have prognostic value. Little is known about the relationship between these markers, PCa, and other factors associated with chronic inflammation, such as smoking and obesity. We analyzed the interaction between neutrophil and platelet counts indexed to lymphocyte count (NLR and PLR, resp.) and clinically significant PCa (csPCa), accounting for the potential confounding factors of systemic inflammation. Methods: NLR and PLR were evaluated in a multicenter prospective study in 443 patients. CsPCa was defined as a Gleason ≥ 4 + 3. Differences between patients with csPCa and non-csPCA were evaluated using the chi-square test, analysis of variance or the Kruskal-Wallis test. Multivariable logistic regression analysis adjusted for smoking, hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, and in separate models, either body mass index or waist-to-hip ratio was used to characterize the relationship between inflammation and csPCa. Results: None of the factors such as plateletcrit, NLR, and PLR were significantly different between patients with csPCa or non-significant PCa. After adjustment, there was no association between PLR, NLR, plateletcrit or platelet count and csPCa. In an exploratory analysis, there was no association between markers of inflammation and PSA levels > 10 ng/mL. When testing different NLR cutoffs to predict csPCa in ROC analysis, none reached a clinically meaningful value. Conclusion: In contrast to previous studies, we found no significant association between easily available blood markers of inflammation and indices of PCa aggressiveness. AbstractThe authors aimed to explore the association between anthropometric indicators and cognitive function and determine which aspects of anthropometric indicators are most closely related to cognitive function. A sum of 3269 older women were included in this study. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, hip circumference, calf circumference, and waist-to-hip ratio were obtained to reflect anthropometric indicators. Cognitive function was assessed using Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Researchers revealed statistically significant differences in total MMSE scores among the low, medium, and high groups of BMI, waist circumference, hip circumference, and calf circumference. Researchers also observed that calf circumference, hip circumference, and waist circumference are significantly associated with the total MMSE score. Our findings highlighted that older women with greater BMI, waist circumference, hip circumference, and calf circumference have a better level of cognitive function. The waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is commonly used as an indicator of mid-body fat distribution and is often used to answer health-related questions. It has also been suggested that a woman's WHR can signal her reproductive fitness. This notion is supported by evidence indicating a relation between WHR and a woman's physical attractiveness. However, it was also acknowledged that the actual fitness cue is the curviness of a woman's body. While curviness is easy to perceive, it is difficult to quantify. Therefore, the WHR is often considered as a simple measure of body curviness. However, the WHR and curviness are not uniquely related. After replicating results of a pioneering study in this area, we therefore tested whether the WHR or curviness better predicts a woman's physical attractiveness. As stimuli, we used simple line drawings of women's bodies, differing in their curviness and width. The results demonstrate that curviness is a better predictor, even though we used a relatively simple curvature-based measure of curviness. This outcome indicates that the WHR is a poor measure of a woman's body curviness and underscores the need for a more accurate measure of curviness when assessing the physical attractiveness of a woman's body. Background: The use of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) for early detection of prostate cancer (PCa) is common but controversial. In rural areas, PSA is widely used for screening because it is convenient and early-stage PCa often shows no symptoms. Studies suggest that PSA levels are linked to factors like unhealthy lifestyles, obesity, lack of exercise, inflammation, and aging. Proper use and interpretation of PSA are crucial for healthcare providers, especially in primary care settings. This study aims to explore the prevalence and factors linked to higher PSA levels in rural men. Methods: We conducted a community-based cross-sectional study from March to December 2023 in the western coastal region of Taiwan. Men aged 40-75 years participated, completing a lifestyle questionnaire and providing blood samples for cardiometabolic biomarkers and PSA levels. PSA levels of ≥ 4.0 ng/mL were considered elevated. We used propensity score matching (PSM) and genetic matching (GM) for analysis, followed by regression analysis. Results: In total, 3347 male adults with a mean age of 56.3 years (SD=11.8, range 40-75), and without cancer-related diseases, were enrolled. Findings indicated that 3.9% (n=130) of men aged 40-75 years had a PSA ≥ 4 ng/mL. and many of them did not adopt health-related behaviors, including inadequate servings of vegetables, water intake, and engaging in regular exercise. Furthermore, more than half of the participants had high blood pressure, and over one-quarter exhibited a higher waist-hip ratio and cardiometabolic diseases. After employing propensity score matching (PSM) and genetic matching (GM) with respect to age and education, the multivariate logistic regression model indicated that less water intake (p<0.01), higher waist-hip ratio (> 0.95) (p<0.05), and being diagnosed with cardiometabolic diseases (p<0.05) were significantly associated with a higher serum PSA level. Conclusion: This study revealed that inadequate water intake and obesity related diseases are significant risk factors associated with elevated PSA levels among male adults living in rural areas. It is important for frontline healthcare providers to carefully interpret the meaning of a high PSA level. Background: Overweight and abdominal obesity pose significant health risks, particularly among medical students who often experience sedentary lifestyles and irregular eating habits. Accurate assessment of visceral fat through anthropometric measurements is essential for effective health management. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between visceral fat and various anthropometric measures to identify the most reliable indicators for early intervention. Aim: To study the correlation between visceral fat and anthropometric measurements Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 273 medical students aged 18-25 years at NIMS Medical College, Jaipur. Anthropometric data were collected using standardized techniques, and visceral fat was measured using Bio-electrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). Data were analyzed to determine correlations between visceral fat and the anthropometric indices. Result: Significant correlations were observed between visceral fat and all anthropometric measurements. Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) showed the strongest correlation, followed by Waist Circumference (WC) and Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR). BMI also correlated moderately with visceral fat. Conclusion: Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) is the most reliable anthropometric measure for assessing visceral fat among medical students. Background: Breastfeeding provides benefits for both mothers and babies. However, many women experience postpartum weight gain, unfavorable lipid profiles, and other postpartum problems that can adversely impact their overall quality of life (QoL). Objective: To examine the effect of adding aerobic and resistive exercise to faradic stimulation and nutritional counseling on lipid profile and QoL in overweight breastfeeding women. Subjects and Methods: Fifty‐four breastfeeding women were randomly allocated into two equally sized groups. Group A underwent abdominal faradic stimulation along with nutritional counseling for 12 weeks, whereas Group B received identical faradic stimulation and nutritional counseling and engaged in a combined aerobic and resistive exercise program for the same duration. Before and after treatment, the following anthropometric measurements were evaluated: body mass index (BMI), waist‐to‐hip ratio (W/H); lipid profile analysis, such as high‐density lipoprotein (HDL), low‐density lipoprotein (LDL), and triglycerides (TG); and the Short Form 36 Health Survey Questionnaire (SF‐36). Results: All outcome measures demonstrated significant improvements within the two groups (p < 0.05). Group B showed more significant reductions in BMI, W/H ratio, and LDL, along with greater significant increases in the SF‐36 domain scores for physical functioning, physical health problems, bodily pain, general health, energy/fatigue, social activity, mental health, and the total SF‐36 score (p < 0.05) compared to group A post‐treatment. However, there were no significant differences in HDL, TG, and the score of the emotional wellbeing domain of the SF‐36 between the groups after treatment (p > 0.05). Chronotypes play a crucial role in regulating sleep–wake cycles and overall health. The aim of this study was to investigate chronotype, sleep quality, polymorphisms of clock genes and the level of leptin in serum. We used standardized questionnaires to assess chronotype and sleep quality. Genetic analysis was performed to determine the selected clock gene polymorphism. Serum leptin level was measured by the Elisa method. The results showed that serum leptin concentration was elevated in women, as well as in men who had a high waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and body mass index (BMI). The evidence indicated that younger students (<22 years old) were most likely to experience poor sleep quality. Nevertheless, our multivariate analysis revealed that young age and a morning-oriented chronotype were associated with better sleep quality. We noted that clock gene polymorphisms were present in 28.6% of the participants. Moreover, polymorphisms of PER1 c.2247C>T (rs2735611) and PER2 c.-12C>G (rs2304672) genes were associated with serum leptin level and chronotype, respectively. These findings provide insights into the relationships between chronotype, sleep quality, clock gene polymorphisms and obesity risk in biomedical students. Background: Anemia presents a considerable public health challenge, standing as a leading contributor to elevated rates of mortality and morbidity. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence of anemia and related factors among Tabari cohort population. Methods: This study involved a cross-sectional investigation carried out during the enrollment phase of the Tabari cohort. The Tabari cohort is a subset of the larger nationwide cohort study known as the "Prospective Epidemiological Research Studies in IrAN" (PERSIAN) cohort. The collected data included general information, anthropometric measurements, medical history and blood samples. Anemia was defined as a hemoglobin level less than 13 mg/dL for men and less than 12 mg/dL for women. Data were analyzed using SPSS V.16. Results: Out of the 10,073 participants included in the analysis, 1,352 individuals (13.4%) were diagnosed with anemia. In the multiple regression analysis, the odds of anemia were significantly 2.31 times in females compared to males, 3.69 times in urban residents compared to rural residents, 1.41 times in social economic categories of IV and 1.35 in social economic categories of V compared to social economic categories of I, 1.70 times in drug abuse compared to non-drug abuse, 0.71 times in body mass index (BMI) categories of 25–29.9 kg/m² and 0.70 in BMI ≥ 30 kg/m² compared to BMI < 25, 0.77 times for triglycerides(TG) > 150 compared to below 150, 0.76 times for total cholesterol(TC) > 200 compared to below 200, 0.83 times for high waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) compared to low WHR, 1.33 times in low High-density Lipoprotein (HDL) compared to high HDL, 1.18 times in diabetics (DM) compared to non-DM, and 1.37 times in individuals with coronary heart diseases (CHD) compared to healthy individuals. Conclusion: Anemia was a prevalent condition among Tabari cohort population. Several conditions including female gender, urban residence, Social economic level of IV and V, drug abuse, low HDL, high WHR, DM, and CHD conditions were significantly associated with increased odds of anemia. Summary: The clinical data analysis found that, compared with the traditional obesity index, the waist-weight ratio (WWR) has more advantages in predicting abnormal bone mineral density in subjects with type 2 diabetes. WWR may serve as a new predictive indicator for osteoporosis in T2DM patients. Purpose: This study was designed to explore the correlation between obesity-related indices and bone mineral density (BMD) and its influencing factors in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. Methods: A total of 528 patients with type 2 diabetes were recruited. Glucose tolerance, insulin stimulation, and blood biochemical tests were conducted on all participants. All subjects underwent dual-energy X-ray bone density testing and were grouped based on the bone density results. Results: Compared with those in the normal BMD group, the waist-to-body weight ratio (WWR) and weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI) in the osteopenia and osteoporosis groups were significantly greater, while body mass index (BMI) was significantly lower (P < 0.05). The logistic regression results showed that the WWR, WWI, and BMI were independently correlated with abnormal BMD in T2DM patients (P < 0.05). WWR and the WWI were negatively correlated with the T-value of bone density in various parts of the body, while BMI was positively correlated with the T-value of bone density (P < 0.05). The area under the working characteristic curve (AUC) for T2DM patients with abnormal bone mass predicted by the WWR [0.806, 95% CI = (0.770–0.843), P < 0.001] was greater than that for patients with other obesity indicators, such as the WWI and BMI. Conclusion: We found a positive correlation between the WWR and bone density in T2DM patients. Compared with other obesity indicators, such as BMI and WWI, the WWR has a stronger discriminative ability for T2DM patients with abnormal bone density. This article explores the potential causal relationship between obesity and rosacea, a chronic inflammatory skin disorder. Using Mendelian randomization analysis, the study found no association between genetic susceptibility to obesity and the risk of rosacea. Jawarish Bisbasa, a Unani polyherbal formulation, is used traditionally in the clinical treatment of central obesity. It is a polyherbal semi-solid preparation of eleven medicinal herbs mainly used as spices. Aim of the study: The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of Unani Formulation Jawarish Bisbasa and compare the changes in lipid profiles and Anthropometric Parameters before and after treatment in patients with hyperlipidaemia associated with central obesity. Materials and methods: An open-label clinical validation study was conducted at the Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine, Mumbai research OPD. The study included 120 cases of each gender with BMIs of 34.99 kg/m2 for men and 32.49 kg/m2 for women, while 88 cases completed the study. Enrolled cases received Unani Formulation Jawarish Bisbasa 7gm BD twice daily with warm water for 8 weeks. The pathological investigations and Anthropometric Parameters related to the study, particularly BMI, Waist Circumference, Waist to hip ratio, Saggital Abdominal Diameter, LDL, HDL, and VLDL values were statistically analysed at baseline, first, follow-up, and at the end of the study by using unpaired Student t-test and one-way analysis of variance. Background: Lifestyle counselling is an effective, non- invasive way to manage weight, glycemic control, blood pressure and to reduce the risk of fatal complications in hypertensives and diabetics. Objective: To assess the effectiveness of lifestyle counselling in management of hypertension and diabetes in an urban community of Manipur, India. Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted among 51 cases each in intervention and control groups. Study population was known cases of hypertension and/or diabetes. One-on-one lifestyle counselling was done on the four risk behaviors (unhealthy diet, insufficient physical activity, tobacco and alcohol use). Effectiveness was assessed by a modified version of WHO STEPS questionnaire and physical and biochemical measurements collected at baseline and 6 months post-intervention. Chi-square test, independent t-test and paired t-test were used. Results: There was no significant difference at baseline and post-intervention blood pressure, BMI and waist-hip ratio and random blood sugar between intervention and control group. Within group comparison showed a significant decrease in random blood sugar in the control group (p=0.044). Conclusion: Our results found no effect of the intervention among people with hypertension and diabetes. Background Adiposity has been characterized as a modifiable risk factor for prostate cancer. Its association with outcomes after prostate cancer diagnosis, however, must be better understood, and more evidence is needed to facilitate the development of lifestyle guidance for patients with prostate cancer. Methods We investigated the associations between adiposity indices close to prostate cancer diagnosis (up to 2 years before or up to 5 years after diagnosis) and mortality in 1968 men of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition cohort. Men were followed up for a median of 9.5 years. Cox proportional hazards models were adjusted for age and year of diagnosis, disease stage and grade, and smoking history and stratified by country. Results Each 5-unit increment in prediagnosis or postdiagnosis body mass index combined was associated with a 30% higher rate of all-cause mortality and a 49% higher rate of prostate cancer–specific mortality. Similarly, each 5-unit increment in prediagnosis body mass index was associated with a 35% higher rate of all-cause mortality and a 51% higher rate of prostate cancer–specific mortality. The associations were less strong for postdiagnosis body mass index, with a lower number of men in analyses. Less clear positive associations were shown for waist circumference, hip circumference, and waist to hip ratio, but data were limited. Conclusions Elevated levels of adiposity close to prostate cancer diagnosis could lead to higher risk of mortality; therefore, men are encouraged to maintain a healthy weight. Introduction: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and peptic ulcer disease (PUD) are prevalent in Taiwan. Few studies have investigated the associations between obesity indices with GERD and PUD simultaneously. This study aimed to investigate the correlations among obesity indices with GERD and PUD in a large cohort of participants, around 120,000, in the Taiwan Biobank (TWB). Methods: A total of 121,583 participants (male: 43,698; female: 77,885; mean age 49.9 ± 11.0 years) were included to analyze the associations among obesity indices, including body mass index (BMI), waist-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), body roundness index (BRI), abdominal volume index (AVI), lipid accumulation product (LAP), visceral adiposity index (VAI), and triglyceride-glucose index (TyG index), with GERD and PUD. Self-reported GERD and PUD were obtained by questionnaires. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was employed to analyze the relationship between obesity indices with GERD and PUD. Results: The prevalence of GERD and PUD was 13.7% and 14.6%, respectively. After multivariable analysis, high WHR (odds ratio [OR] = 1.009, p < 0.001), WHtR (OR = 1.005, p = 0.003), BRI (OR = 1.022, p = 0.005), AVI (OR = 1.013, p < 0.001), LAP (OR = 1.001, p < 0.001), TyG index (OR = 1.068, p < 0.001), and VAI (OR = 1.013, p = 0.002) were significantly associated with GERD, except BMI (p = 0.384). On the other hand, low BMI (OR = 0.984; p < 0.001) and AVI (OR = 0.994; p = 0.036) were significantly associated with PUD. However, the values of WHR (p = 0.151), WHtR (p = 0.304), BRI (p = 0.452), LAP (p = 0.799), VAI (p = 0.347), and TyG index (p = 0.642) were not. Conclusion: This study found that high obesity indices are associated with GERD, but low obesity indices are associated with PUD in a large Taiwanese population study. Introduction: Obesity has previously been correlated with an elevated risk of reproductive system diseases in women. The waist-hip ratio (WHR) has been shown to be correlated with visceral fat, making it one of the most commonly used indicators of abdominal obesity. However, little is known about the relationship between WHR and infertility. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the WHR on infertility in women of childbearing age. Methods: The study used cross-sectional data from women aged 20–45 who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which was conducted between 2017 and 2020. We collected details of their waist circumference, hip circumference, fertility status, and several other essential variables. We used multivariate logistic regression analysis and subgroup analyses to assess the association between WHR and infertility. Results: There were 976 participants, with 12.0% (117/976) who experienced infertility. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, our multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that every 0.1 unit increase in WHR resulted in a more than 35% higher risk of infertility (odds ratio [OR; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.35 [1.01∼1.81], p = 0.043). Compared to the group with WHR <0.85, the risk of infertility increased in the group with WHR ≥0.85, with an adjusted OR of 1.74 (95% CI: 1.06∼2.85). When WHR was treated as a continuous variable, it was observed that each 0.1 unit increase in WHR was associated with a relatively high risk in the secondary infertility population after adjusting all covariates, with an OR of 1.66 (95% CI: 1.14∼2.40, p = 0.01). When WHR was analyzed as a categorical variable, the group with WHR ≥0.85 exhibited a significantly higher risk of secondary infertility than the group with WHR <0.85, with the OR of 2.75 (95% CI: 1.35–5.59, p = 0.01) after adjusting for all covariates. Furthermore, the interaction analysis indicated that there was a significant interaction between age status on WHR and the risk of infertility. Conclusion: WHR showed a positive correlation with the risk of infertility. This study highlights the importance of effectively managing abdominal fat and promoting the maintenance of optimal WHR levels to mitigate the progression of infertility, particularly for younger women. This study compared the effects of bodyweight exercises with kettlebell resistance training on important body composition measures in male young adults. A passive control group was also included. Data from 18 young male participants, with an average age of (20.43±2.18) years, were included in the final analysis. The participants were divided into three groups at random: body weight resistance training group (BWRTG, n=6), kettlebell resistance training group (KRTG, n=6), and the control group (CG, n=6), which had no training. Body composition was evaluated through various metrics, including skeletal mass, body fat mass, body mass index, body fat percentage, waist-to-hip ratio, and visceral fat area. The 12-week progressive training programs for KRTG and BWRTG were structured with defined sets, repetitions, and intensity modifications. The results revealed that both the KRTG and BWRTG groups showed similar effects on body fat mass (p=0.032, ES=0.22; p=0.021, ES=0.29), body fat percentage (p=0.040, ES=0.22; p=0.037, ES=0.21), and visceral fat area (p=0.004, ES=0.36; p=0.002, ES=0.60). A significant improvement in the waist-to-hip ratio was observed in the KRTG group (p=0.036, ES=0.36), while no significant change was seen in the BWRTG group (p=0.036, ES=0.52). The results show that the 12-week KRTG and BWRTG regimens had comparable benefits on reductions in visceral fat area, body fat mass, and body fat percentage. These results indicate that both training methods are suitable for individuals aiming to enhance body composition, with kettlebell training providing an extra advantage in decreasing waist-to-hip ratio. Background: Menopause induces physiological changes in women, including increased risks of obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and muscle loss, which can be mitigated by physical exercise. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a 12-week multicomponent exercise programme, performed 2 or 3 days per week, on health and fitness parameters in postmenopausal women. Methods: Eighty-three postmenopausal women (aged 50–65 years) were randomly assigned to three groups: control group (CG, n = 27), 2 days/week exercise group (EG2, n = 28), and 3 days/week exercise group (EG3, n = 28). The intervention included strength, balance, aerobic, and flexibility exercises. Anthropometric measurements (body weight, BMI, waist-to-hip ratio, lean body mass, body fat percentage), lipid profile, and isometric strength were assessed pre- and post-intervention. Data were analysed using a repeated-measures ANOVA, with p < 0.05 considered significant. Results: Significant reductions in body weight, BMI, and waist-to-hip ratio were observed in EG2 and EG3 compared to CG. Lean body mass increased significantly in both EG2 (p < 0.001, ES = 1.37) and EG3 (p < 0.001, ES = 1.50). EG3 showed a greater reduction in body fat percentage than EG2 (p = 0.049). Strength and balance improved significantly in both experimental groups compared to CG, with no significant differences between EG2 and EG3. EG3 also showed superior improvements in lipid profile compared to EG2 and CG. Conclusion: A multicomponent exercise programme, particularly with higher frequency (3 days per week), improves body composition, strength, balance, and lipid profile in postmenopausal women. Jawarish Bisbasa, a Unani polyherbal formulation, is used traditionally in the clinical treatment of central obesity. It is a polyherbal semi-solid preparation of eleven medicinal herbs mainly used as spices. Aim of the study: The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of Unani Formulation Jawarish Bisbasa and compare the changes in lipid profiles and Anthropometric Parameters before and after treatment in patients with hyperlipidaemia associated with central obesity. Materials and methods: An open-label clinical validation study was conducted at the Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine, Mumbai research OPD. The study included 120 cases of each gender with BMIs of 34.99 kg/ m2 for men and 32.49 kg/m2 for women, while 88 cases completed the study. Enrolled cases received Unani Formulation Jawarish Bisbasa 7gm BD twice daily with warm water for 8 weeks. The pathological investigations and Anthropometric Parameters related to the study, particularly BMI, Waist Circumference, Waist to hip ratio, Saggital Abdominal Diameter, LDL, HDL, and VLDL values were statistically analysed at baseline, first, follow- up, and at the end of the study by using unpaired Student t-test and one-way analysis of variance. Extremely significant BMI, Waist Circumference, Waist to hip ratio, Saggital Abdominal Diameter, and lowering of ESR, Total cholesterol, and Triglycerides when the values of before-treatment and after-treatment were analyzed in hyperlipidemia associated with central obesity. Background and Objectives: Age at menarche is related to various biological and socioeconomic factors in childhood. The aim of the study was to examine the association of age at menarche with general and abdominal obesity in young women. Materials and Methods: A transversal anthropometric survey was conducted with 102 females from 21 to 25 years of age. The surveyed traits included height, weight, waist circumference (WC) and hip circumference (HC). General obesity was assessed using the body mass index (BMI) and abdominal obesity by WC, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). A retrospective method was used for collecting age at menarche data. Results: The average age at menarche is 12.80 years. Early menarcheal age (<12 years) is detected in 25.5% of young females, while late onset of menarche (>14 years) is recorded for 20.6% of subjects. Early menarche age subjects exhibit significantly higher BMI, WC and WHtR in comparison with their late menarche age peers. There is a significant negative correlation between BMI, WC and WHtR values and menarcheal age. Late age at menarche is associated with higher probability of underweight status (BMI < 18.5 and/or WHtR < 0.4). Conclusions: Age at menarche has a negative correlation with general and abdominal obesity. Young women with early age at menarche show statistically higher values of BMI, WC and WHtR, while those with late menarcheal age show greater susceptibility to becoming underweight. Background: In the literature, obesity has been correlated with coronary artery diseases (CADs) and high health costs. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between obesity parameters and the health costs among patients with CADs undergoing cardiac catheterization. Method: A secondary data analysis was done for an original study. The original study was conducted among 220 hospitalized patients undergoing cardiac catheterization from two main hospitals located in the Middle and Northern regions of Jordan. Bivariate Pearson's correlation and forward linear regression analysis were calculated in this study. Results: The average health cost for the participants was 1,344 JOD (1,895.63 USD). A significant positive moderate correlation (r = 0.4) was found between hip circumference (HC) and health cost. There were significant positive weak correlations between low-density lipoprotein (LDL), triglycerides, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (HS-CRP), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), and depression, and the health cost (correlation coefficient 0.17, 0.3, 0.29, 0.22 and 0.17, respectively. HC, waist circumference (WC), waist-height ratio (WHtR), waist-hip ratio (WHR), and body adiposity index (BAI) were significantly associated with health costs among male participants. In contrast, among females, none of the obesity parameters was significantly associated with health costs. The forward regression analysis illustrated that an increase of HC by 3.9 cm (β (0.292) * SD (13.4)) will increase the health cost by 1 JOD (0.71 USD). The same analysis revealed that HS-CRP increased by 0.4 mg/dl (β (0.258)*SD (1.43)), or triglycerides increased by 8.3 mg/dl (β (0.241)* SD (34.3)), or depression score increased by 0.32 score (β (0.137)* SD (2.3)), or total cholesterol increased by 4 mg/dl (β (0.163)* SD (24.7)), the health cost will increase by one JOD (0.71 USD). Conclusion: Healthcare providers, including nurses, should significantly consider these factors to reduce the health costs for those at-risk patients by providing the appropriate healthcare on time. Background: Identifying mediators between obesity-related traits and lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) would inform preventive and therapeutic strategies to reduce the burden of LRITs. We aimed to recognize whether lung function and inflammatory factors mediate their associations. Methods: We conducted a two-step, two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Two-sample MR was performed on (1) obesity-related traits (i.e., body mass index [BMI], waist circumference [WC], and waist-to-hip ratio [WHR]) and LRTIs (i.e., acute bronchitis, acute bronchiolitis, bronchiectasis, influenza, and pneumonia), (2) obesity-related traits and potential mediators, and (3) potential mediators and LRTIs. Next, two-step MR was applied to infer whether the mediation effects exist. Results: We found that C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) mediated 32.59% (95% CI: 17.90%, 47.27%), 7.96% (95% CI: 1.79%, 14.14%), and 4.04% (95% CI: 0.34%, 7.74%) of the effect of BMI on pneumonia, and they mediated 26.90% (95% CI: 13.98%, 39.83%), 10.23% (95% CI: 2.72%, 17.73%), and 4.67% (95% CI: 0.25%, 9.09%) of the effect of WC on pneumonia, respectively. Additionally, CRP, forced vital capacity (FVC), and FEV1 mediated 18.66% (95% CI: 8.70%, 28.62%), 8.72% (95% CI: 1.86%, 15.58%), and 8.41% (95% CI: 2.77%, 14.06%) of the effect of BMI on acute bronchitis, and they mediated 19.96% (95% CI: 7.44%, 32.48%), 12.19% (95% CI: 2.00%, 22.39%), and 12.61% (95% CI: 2.94%, 22.29%) of the effect of WC on acute bronchitis, respectively. Conclusions: Health interventions linked to reducing inflammation and maintaining normal lung function could help mitigate the risk of obesity-related LRTIs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Obesity is a common feature in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and potentially significantly influences reproductive function. However, opinions are divided as to which factor is a more appropriate obesity predictor of reproductive outcomes. The aim of this study was to investigate the discriminatory capability of anthropometric measures in predicting reproductive outcomes in Chinese women with PCOS. Methods: A total of 998 women with PCOS from PCOSAct were included. Logistic regression models were used to compute the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence interval (95% CIs) to assess the effect of anthropometric measures, including body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), the waist‒hip ratio (WHR) and the waist‒height ratio (WHtR), on reproductive outcomes. The discrimination abilities of the models were assessed and compared based on the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), Akaike's information criterion (AIC) and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI). Results: Among PCOS women, there was a graded association between anthropometric measures and predicted reproductive outcomes across quintiles of anthropometric measures, including a linear association among WHR, BMI and reproductive outcomes and among waist circumference, WHtR and live birth, pregnancy, and ovulation. However, only a linear association was noted between the hip and ovulation. C-statistic comparisons and IDI analyses revealed a trend towards a significant superiority of BMI for ovulation and WHR for live birth, pregnancy and conception in the models. Combining obesity variables improved discrimination in the multivariable models for reproductive outcomes. Conclusions: Our findings support that BMI is a better predictor of ovulation and that the WHR is a better predictor of live birth, pregnancy and conception, whereas the combination of obesity variables contributes to the discrimination of reproduction. Background: An increased risk of diabetes mellitus (DM) after COVID-19 has been reported in the United States, Europe, and Asia. The burden of COVID-related DM has yet to be described in Africa, where the overall risk of DM has been increasing rapidly. Our objective was to compare the prevalence of pre-DM and DM in Nigerian individuals with a history of COVID-19 to individuals without known COVID-19 infection. Methods: We undertook a retrospective cohort study with 256 individuals with a past medical history of COVID-19 with no history of pre-DM or DM and 256 individuals without a history of COVID-19 or pre-DM/DM. Participants were categorized as pre-DM (fasting capillary glucose 100–125 mg/dL) or DM (fasting capillary glucose ≥ 126 mg/dL). We employed univariate and multivariable logistic regression to identify key predictors and adjust for confounders related to hyperglycaemia risk factors. Additionally, we used multinomial logistic regression to analyze the relationship between COVID-19 history and diabetes status, distinguishing between normal, pre-diabetic, and diabetic glucose levels. All models were adjusted for age, gender, hypertension, physical activity, central adiposity, and family history of DM. Results: Compared to the control group, those with a history of COVID-19 had a similar median age (38 vs. 40 years, p = 0.84), had a higher proportion of men (63% vs. 49%), and had a lower prevalence of central adiposity (waist: hip ratio ≥ 0.90 for males and WHR ≥ 0.85 for females) (48% vs. 56.3%, p = 0.06). Of the 256 with a history of COVID-19, 44 (17%) required in-patient care. The median (interquartile range) time interval between COVID-19 diagnosis and the glycaemic assessment was 19 (IQR: 14, 24) months. Pre-DM prevalence was 27% in the post-COVID-19 group and 4% in the control group, whereas the prevalence of DM was 7% in the post-COVID-19 group and 2% in the control group. After multivariable adjustment, the odds of pre-DM were 8.12 (95% confidence interval (CI): 3.98, 16.58; p < 0.001) higher, and the odds of DM were 3.97 (95% CI: 1.16, 13.63) higher in those with a history of COVID-19 compared to controls. In the adjusted multinomial logistic regression analysis, individuals with a history of COVID-19 exhibited significantly elevated risks for pre-diabetes (RRR = 7.55, 95% CI: 3.76–15.17) and diabetes (RRR = 3.44, 95% CI: 1.01–11.71) compared to those without COVID-19. Conclusion: Previous COVID-19 was found to be a risk factor for prevalent pre-diabetes and diabetes mellitus in Nigeria. Several international epidemiological studies have established a link between obesity and upper gastrointestinal cancer (UGC), but Chinese evidence is limited. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of obesity, especially central obesity, while investigating its association with upper gastrointestinal diseases in the high-risk population of Yangzhong, a typical high-risk area for UGC in southeastern China. We conducted a cross-sectional study from November 2017 to June 2021 involving 6736 residents aged 40–69. Multivariate logistic regression was used to assess independent factors influencing overweight/obesity and central obesity. We also analyzed the relationship between obesity and upper gastrointestinal diseases using multinomial logistic regression. The prevalence of overweight, obesity, waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR)-central obesity were 40.6%, 12.0%, 49.9%, 79.4%, and 63.7%, respectively. Gender, age, smoking, tea consumption, sufficient vegetable, pickled food, spicy food, eating speed, physical activity, family history of cancer, and family history of common chronic disease were associated with overweight /obesity and central obesity. Besides, education and missing teeth were only associated with central obesity. General and central obesity were positively associated with UGC, while general obesity was negatively associated with UGC precancerous diseases. There were no significant associations between obesity and UGC precancerous lesions. Subgroup analyses showed that general and central obesity was positively associated with gastric cancer but not significantly associated with esophageal cancer. Obesity is negatively and positively associated with gastric and esophageal precancerous diseases, respectively. In conclusion, general and central obesity were at high levels in the target population in this study. Most included factors influenced overweight/obesity and central obesity simultaneously. Policymakers should urgently develop individualized measures to reduce local obesity levels according to obesity characteristics. Besides, obesity increases the risk of UGC but decreases the risk of UGC precancerous diseases, especially in the stomach. The effect of obesity on the precancerous diseases of the gastric and esophagus appears to be the opposite. No significant association between obesity and upper gastrointestinal precancerous lesions was found in the study. This finding still needs to be validated in cohort studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The association between education, intelligence, and cognition with digestive tract diseases has been established. However, the specific contribution of each factor in the pathogenesis of these diseases are still uncertain. Method: This study employed multivariable Mendelian randomization (MR) to assess the independent effects of education, intelligence, and cognition on gastrointestinal conditions in the FinnGen and UK Biobank European-ancestry populations. A two-step MR approach was employed to assess the mediating effects of the association. Results: Meta-analysis of MR estimates from FinnGen and UK Biobank showed that 1- SD (4.2 years) higher education was causally associated with lower risks of gastroesophageal reflux (OR: 0.58; 95% CI: 0.50, 0.66), peptic ulcer (OR: 0.57; 95% CI: 0.47, 0.69), irritable bowel syndrome (OR: 0.70; 95% CI: 0.56, 0.87), diverticular disease (OR: 0.69; 95% CI: 0.61, 0.78), cholelithiasis (OR: 0.68; 95% CI: 0.59, 0.79) and acute pancreatitis (OR: 0.54; 95% CI: 0.41, 0.72), independently of intelligence and cognition. These causal associations were mediating by body mass index (3.7-22.3%), waist-to-hip ratio (8.3-11.9%), body fat percentage (4.1-39.8%), fasting insulin (1.4-5.5%) and major depression (6.0-12.4%). Conclusion: Our findings demonstrate a causal and independent association between education and six common digestive tract diseases. Additionally, our study highlights five mediators as crucial targets for preventing digestive tract diseases associated with lower education levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To date, the best obesity-related indicators (ORIs) for predicting hypertension, dyslipidaemia, Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and multimorbidity are still controversial. This study assessed the ability of 17 ORIs [body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage (BF%), c-index, Clínica Universidad de Navarra-Body Adiposity Estimator (CUN-BAE), a body shape index (ABSI), body adiposity index (BAI), waist circumference (WC), waist-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), body roundness index (BRI), abdominal volume index (AVI), triglyceride glucose index (TYG), lipid accumulation product (LAP), visceral adiposity index (VAI), Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI), waist triglyceride index (WTI) and cardiometabolic index (CMI)] to predict hypertension, dyslipidemia, T2DM, and multimorbidity in populations aged 40–69 years. From November 2017 to December 2022, 10,432 compliant residents participated in this study. Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to assess the ability of ORIs to predict target diseases across the whole population and genders. The DeLong test was used to analyse the heterogeneity of area under curves (AUCs). Multivariable logistic regression was used to analyse the association of ORIs with hypertension, dyslipidaemia, T2DM, and multimorbidity. The prevalence of hypertension, dyslipidaemia, T2DM, and multimorbidity was 67.46%, 39.36%, 12.54% and 63.58%, respectively. After excluding ORIs associated with the target disease components, in the whole population, CVAI (AUC = 0.656), BMI (AUC = 0.655, not significantly different from WC and AVI), CVAI (AUC = 0.645, not significantly different from LAP, CMI, WHR, and WTI), and TYG (AUC = 0.740) were the best predictor of hypertension, dyslipidemia, T2DM, and multimorbidity, respectively (all P < 0.05). In the male population, BF% (AUC = 0.677), BMI (AUC = 0.698), CMI (AUC = 0.648, not significantly different from LAP and CVAI), and TYG (AUC = 0.741) were the best predictors (all P < 0.05). In the female population, CVAI (AUC = 0.677), CUN-BAE (AUC = 0.623, not significantly different from BF%, WC, WHR, WHtR, BRI and BMI), CVAI (AUC = 0.657, not significantly different from WHR), TYG (AUC = 0.740) were the best predictors (all P < 0.05). After adjusting for all covariates, all ORIs were significantly associated with hypertension, dyslipidaemia, T2DM, and multimorbidity (all P < 0.05), except for ABSI and hypertension and BAI and T2DM, which were insignificant. Ultimately, after considering the heterogeneity of prediction of ORIs among different populations, for hypertension, BF% was the best indicator for men and CVAI for the rest of the population. The best predictors of dyslipidaemia, T2DM, and multimorbidity were BMI, CVAI and TYG, respectively. Background: Numerous reports indicate that both obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are factors associated with cognitive impairment (CI). The objective was to assess the relationship between abdominal obesity as measured by waist-to-hip ratio adjusted for body mass index (WHRadjBMI) and CI in middle-aged and elderly patients with T2DM. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted, in which a total of 1154 patients with T2DM aged ≥ 40 years were included. WHRadjBMI was calculated based on anthropometric measurements and CI was assessed utilizing the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Participants were divided into CI group (n = 509) and normal cognition group (n = 645). Correlation analysis and binary logistic regression were used to explore the relationship between obesity-related indicators including WHRadjBMI, BMI as well as waist circumference (WC) and CI. Meanwhile, the predictive power of these indicators for CI was estimated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results: WHRadjBMI was positively correlated with MoCA scores, independent of sex. The Area Under the Curve (AUC) for WHRadjBMI, BMI and WC were 0.639, 0.521 and 0.533 respectively, and WHRadjBMI had the highest predictive power for CI. Whether or not covariates were adjusted, one-SD increase in WHRadjBMI was significantly related to an increased risk of CI with an adjusted OR of 1.451 (95% CI: 1.261–1.671). After multivariate adjustment, the risk of CI increased with rising WHRadjBMI quartiles (Q4 vs. Q1 OR: 2.980, 95%CI: 2.032–4.371, P for trend < 0.001). Conclusions: Our study illustrated that higher WHRadjBMI is likely to be associated with an increased risk of CI among patients with T2DM. These findings support the detrimental effects of excess visceral fat accumulation on cognitive function in middle-aged and elderly T2DM patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) have become urgent worldwide health problems, predisposing patients to unfavorable myocardial status and thyroid dysfunction. Low-carbohydrate diet (LCD) and time-restricted eating (TRE) have been confirmed to be effective methods for weight management and improving MetS, but their effects on the myocardium and thyroid are unclear. Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis in a randomized clinical diet-induced weight-loss trial. Participants (N = 169) diagnosed with MetS were randomized to the LCD group, the 8 h TRE group, or the combination of the LCD and TRE group for 3 months. Myocardial enzymes and thyroid function were tested before and after the intervention. Pearson's or Spearman's correlation was assessed between functions of the myocardium and thyroid and cardiometabolic parameters at baseline. Results: A total of 162 participants who began the trial were included in the intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis, and 57 participants who adhered to their assigned protocol were involved in the per-protocol (PP) analysis. Relative to baseline, lactate dehydrogenase, creatine kinase MB, hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase, and free triiodothyronine (FT3) declined, and free thyroxine (FT4) increased after all 3 interventions (both analyses). Creatine kinase (CK) decreased only in the TRE (− 18 [44] U/L, P < 0.001) and combination (− 22 [64] U/L, P = 0.003) groups (PP analysis). Thyrotropin (− 0.24 [0.83] μIU/mL, P = 0.011) and T3 (− 0.10 ± 0.04 ng/mL, P = 0.011) decreased in the combination group (ITT analysis). T4 (0.82 ± 0.39 μg/dL, P = 0.046), thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb, 2 [1] %, P = 0.021), and thyroid microsomal antibodies (TMAb, 2 [2] %, P < 0.001) increased, while the T3/T4 ratio (− 0.01 ± 0.01, P = 0.020) decreased only in the TRE group (PP analysis). However, no significant difference between groups was observed in either analysis. At baseline, CK was positively correlated with the visceral fat area. FT3 was positively associated with triglycerides and total cholesterol. FT4 was negatively related to insulin and C-peptide levels. TgAb and TMAb were negatively correlated with the waist-to-hip ratio. Conclusions: TRE with or without LCD confers remarkable metabolic benefits on myocardial status and thyroid function in subjects with MetS. Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04475822. Introduction: Diabetes is a significant risk factor for cognitive impairment. Therefore, early identification of cognitive impairment in diabetic patients is particularly important. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between Cardiometabolic index (CMI) and cognitive function in a diabetic population. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted by collecting information from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011–2014. Multiple linear regression models were used to investigate the correlation between CMI and low cognitive function in a diabetic population. Threshold effects analysis and fitted smoothing curves were used to describe the nonlinear links. Interaction tests and subgroup analyses were also performed. Results: A total of 1,050 people participated in this study, including 561 men and 489 women. In the fully corrected model, CMI was positively associated with low cognitive performance as assessed by CERAD Word List Learning Test (CERAD W-L), Animal Fluency Test (AFT), and Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST) (OR = 1.37 [1.14, 1.72], p = 7.4 × 10−3), (OR = 1.21 [1.04, 1.51], p = 1.26 × 10−2), and (OR = 1.27 [1.08, 1.63], p = 2.53 × 10−2). Our study found that diabetic patients with higher CMI were at greater risk of developing low cognitive function. The effect of the subgroups on the positive association of CMI with cognitive impairment was not significant. A non-linear association between low cognitive performance and CMI was determined by CERAD W-L, AFT, and DSST (log-likelihood ratio <5 × 10−2). In addition, our also study found that CMI was a better predictor of cognitive impairment in diabetes than weight-adjusted waist index (WWI). Conclusion: Increased CMI is associated with an increased risk of cognitive impairment in people with diabetes. Objectives: this study aims to evaluate the prevalence of various arrhythmias and other electrocardiographic patterns within the group of individuals with overweight and obesity. Methods: One hundred eighty-one adults (90 females and 91 males) were qualified for inclusion in the experimental group. All participants had a body mass index (BMI) exceeding 25 kg/m2 (98 patients with obesity and 83 with overweight). The mean BMI in the obesity group was 33.6 kg/m2, and all participants had class 1 obesity. The control group comprised 69 individuals (56 females and 13 males) with normal BMI. The basic measurements were performed, and the participants filled out questionnaires describing their health conditions and lifestyles. Each participant underwent an electrocardiographic (ECG) examination and a 24 h Holter ECG examination. Results: In patients with class 1 obesity compared to the control patients, the average numbers of premature ventricular beats (PVBs) and premature supraventricular beats (SPBs) were statistically significantly higher (p = 0.030 and p = 0.042). There was a positive correlation between body weight and PVB (p = 0.028) and between body weight and SPB (p = 0.028). Moreover, BMI and waist circumference were correlated with SPB (p = 0.043 and p = 0.031). In the backward stepwise multivariate regression model considering 24 h Holter ECG monitoring, concerning SPB as the dependent variable, it was observed that BMI (especially obesity class 1), type 2 diabetes, and thyroid disease exhibited the highest regression coefficients. Conclusions: obesity, even in class 1, might be a factor in a more frequent occurrence of abnormalities in electrocardiographic tests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/Objectives: Most cases of colorectal cancer (CRC) arise from adenomatous polyps. Identifying risk factors for colorectal adenoma (CRA) is critical for CRC prevention. Emerging evidence suggests a link between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and an elevated risk of CRA and CRC, potentially mediated by visceral obesity and adiponectin (APN). We aimed to evaluate the association between different markers of visceral obesity, serum APN, MetS, and the presence of CRA. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the University Clinical Center of Vojvodina, involving 120 patients, aged 40–75 years, who underwent colonoscopy between January 2022 and January 2023. Sixty patients with CRA were compared to 60 controls with normal colonoscopy findings. Visceral fat thickness (VFT) was measured using ultrasound (US), and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) was used to assess visceral fat area (VFA). Serum APN levels, anthropometric measures, and MetS components were also evaluated. Results: Patients with CRA had significantly higher VFT measured by US (p < 0.05), but no significant differences were found in VFA measured by BIA, waist circumference (WC), or waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). MetS was significantly more prevalent in the CRA group (55% vs. 31.6%, p < 0.05), and logistic regression confirmed MetS as a significant predictor of CRA presence (OR = 2.6). Serum APN levels were inversely correlated with visceral fat measurements and MetS (p < 0.01), but no significant difference in APN levels was observed between patients with and without CRA. Conclusions: This study highlights the importance of VFT measured by US and the presence of MetS as significant factors associated with CRA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
