This paper presents application of optical microscope for evaluation of microtexture changes of coarse aggregate during simulated polishing in laboratory. Observations of the apparent changes on surfaces of seven different aggregates are presented. Simulation polishing of aggregate was performed in accordance with PN-EN 1097-8:2009. Images of the aggregate surface were taken with the optical microscope in the reflection mode in particular stages of polishing. Digital images were analyzed. Standard deviation was determined on the basis of the histogram of intensities from digital images of the surfaces of aggregate grains which was assumed as the measure of changes in microtexture during simulated polishing (namely the σn parameter). Statistical analysis has shown that the changes of the σn parameter between the particular stages of polishing confirm certain trends related to the petrographic characteristic of the rocks. Aggregates which included minerals of similar hardness (granodiorite, dolomile, basall) were more prone to polishing than gabbro and postglacial. Regeneration of the microtexture, the recovery to its original asperity, occurred in the case of quartz sandstone and steelmaking slag.

The aggregate applied for the wearing course has a significant influence on skid resistance of road surfaces. However, it is difficult to evaluate the behaviour of road surface in use on the basis of the Polished Stone Value (PSV) determined for the aggregate according to the so called ‘British method’. The British method, which is currently used in many countries, does not allow to determine the influence of neither the grain size of the aggregate nor the type of the wearing course on skid resistance of road surface. The present paper suggests a method for evaluation of the British Pendulum Number (BPN) for road surfaces in laboratory conditions. The authors assumed the BPN for polished slabs, made from asphalt mixtures, as the criterion. The index was measured with the British Pendulum Tester. The simulation of the process was conducted on research stand (called slab polisher) built at Bialystok University of Technology (BUT). The results of laboratory tests indicate that surfaces from asphalt concrete (AC) have slightly higher values of BPN in comparison with the values determined for surfaces made from stone mastic asphalt (SMA).

The paper presents the results of the properties of composite layers made of porous asphalt, with a void content above 30%, filled with a special-coloured mortar. Three mortars of white, red and blue colours were selected, whose compressive strength after 2 days was over 60 MPa and the flexural strength was over 7 MPa. The study of composite layer aimed at determination of the water sensitivity expressed in ITSR (Indirect Tensile Strength Ratio) according to the standard EN 12697-12 (method A) and rutting resistance according to standard EN 12697-22 in the small apparatus (method B). The results indicate that such solutions will be justified in places with extremely heavy traffic, such as bus stops. In addition, the condition of the layer surface after simulating its wear was assessed using of the CTM (Circular Track Meter), the BPT (British Pendulum Tester) and a reflectometer. The results indicate that they can be used in areas with low speed limits. On the other hand, the possibility of introducing the pigment into the mortar has a positive effect on surface of those elements of the communication system, which should have a different color than the road surface. These are the surfaces of bicycle paths, pedestrian and bicycle routes, areas of intersections, where their visibility plays an important role due to the safety of users.

This paper presents the preparation and study of the properties of alginate materials, which were obtained on the basis of sodium alginate, activated carbon, cellulose, and calcium chloride. Alginate-carbon (AlgCa + C) and alginate-cellulose (AlgCa + Cel) composites, as well as pure calcium alginate (AlgCa) for comparative purposes, were obtained. Their textural (nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms), morphological (scanning electron microscopy), thermal (thermal analysis), and acid-base (pH drift method) properties, as well as the swelling index, were investigated. Additionally, to determine the adsorption properties, comprehensive equilibrium and kinetic studies of the adsorption of sodium salts of ibuprofen (IBP), diclofenac (D), and naproxen (NPX) from aqueous solutions on biocomposities were carried out. Adsorption isotherms were fitted using the Marczewski-Jaroniec isotherm equation (R 2 = 0.941-0.988). Data on the adsorption rate were analyzed using simple kinetic equations, of which the best quality of fit was obtained using the multi-exponential equation (R 2 - 1 = (3.9 × 10 -4 )-(6.9 × 10 -4 )). The highest obtained adsorption values were reached in systems with alginate-carbon composite and were 1.23 mmol/g for NPX, 0.81 mmol/g for D, and 0.43 mmol/g for IBP. The AlgCa + C material was characterized by a large specific surface area (1151 m 2 /g), a high degree of swelling (300%) and high resistance to high temperatures.

This work represents an innovative approach to the synthesis and characterization of a chitosan-based biocomposite for fluoride adsorption. The work involved the development of a biocomposite based on modified chicken bone waste-derived hydroxyapatite and TiO 2 . The composite was characterized using scanning electron microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared analysis (FTIR), thermal-gravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The optimum parameters for fluoride removal were determined, and the kinetic data was better fitted to the pseudo-first-order model. The Liu equations provided a better description of the experimental adsorption isotherm data. This paper presents the properties of an SMA LA (stone matrix asphalt Lärmarmer) mixture based on the polymer-modified binder PMB 45/80-55, formed by the addition of zeolites (synthetic zeolite type Na-P1 and natural zeolite-clinoptilolite). The compositions of the SMA 11, SMA 8 LA and SMA 11 LA mixtures based on modified bitumen with PMB 45/80-55 (reference mixture) or PMB 45/80-55 with Na-P1 or clinoptilolite were determined. Their resistance to permanent deformation, water sensitivity, water permeability and susceptibility to changes in texture and skid resistance during the period of use were verified. Adding zeolites reduced the production temperature by as much as 15 °C for the SMA 11 LA mixtures and 20 °C for SMA 8 LA. The addition of zeolites did not significantly affect the resistance to permanent deformation, the water permeability or the mass loss. The mixtures with clinoptilolite were resistant to the harmful effects of water, while the mixtures with Na-P1 proved more sensitive to water. Water permeability tests showed a higher permeability for SMA 11 LA compared to SMA 8 LA due to the higher nominal aggregate size. The Cantabro test showed greater particle loss for SMA 11 LA than for SMA 8 LA. A skid resistance and macrotexture analysis indicated that the SMA LA layers required special maintenance on the road due to the clogging of pores in the mix structure.

Leukemia is a heterogeneous group of hematological malignancies. Despite the enormous progress that has been made in the field of hemato-oncology in recent years, there are still many problems related to, among others, disease recurrence and drug resistance, which is why the search for ideal biomarkers with high clinical utility continues. Research shows that exosomes play a critical role in the biology of leukemia and are associated with the drug resistance, metastasis, and immune status of leukemias. Exosomes with their cargo of non-coding RNAs act as a kind of intermediary in intercellular communication and, at the same time, have the ability to manipulate the cell microenvironment and influence the reaction, proliferative, angiogenic, and migratory properties of cells. Exosomal ncRNAs (in particular, circRNAs and microRNAs) appear to be promising cell-free biomarkers for diagnostic, prognostic, and treatment monitoring of leukemias. This review examines the expression of exosomal ncRNAs in leukemias and their potential regulatory role in leukemia therapy but also in conditions such as disease relapse, drug resistance, metastasis, and immune status. Given the key role of ncRNAs in regulating gene networks and intracellular pathways through their ability to interact with DNA, transcripts, and proteins and identifying their specific target genes, defining potential functions and therapeutic strategies will provide valuable information.

This paper presents issues related to the assessment of the texture of aggregate concrete (EAC) surfaces using various methods for its verification. Microtexture was assessed using the British Pendulum Tester (BPT) and Dynamic Friction Tester (DFT). Two laser profilometers were used to assess macrotexture, circular texture meter (CTM) and stationary laser profilograph (SPL), as well as the commonly known volumetric method. Measurements were carried out on left and right tracks and in between them on five test sections of expressways. Based on the analyses performed, it was found that the results obtained by the DFT were less sensitive to changes in microtexture between individual tracks compared to the results obtained by the BPT. The BPN values in the left track were lower than those in the right track. However, the difference between the DFT20 results in these spots was insignificant. Both MPD and MTD values did not show significant differences between the right and left tracks. However, some differences were observed between the MPD parameters obtained using the CTM and SPL. This resulted from the different frequency and length of the scanned surface profile. However, the differences were at an acceptable level. A very high linear correlation was obtained in the case of BPN and DFT20 values (r - 0.719), and in the case of MPD and MTD values, the correlation was almost certain (r above 0.900). Based on a comparative analysis of the models estimating mean texture depth (MTD/ETD), a significant difference was observed between models based on EAC pavement results and those based on asphalt surfaces.

The toxicity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) depends on their physicochemical properties. The ongoing research aims to develop effective methods for modifying AgNPs using molecules that enable control over the processes induced by nanoparticles in both normal and cancerous cells. Application of amino acid-stabilized nanoparticles appears promising, exhibiting tunable electrokinetic properties. Therefore, this study focused on determining the influence of the surface charge of cysteine (CYS)-stabilized AgNPs on their toxicity towards human normal B (COLO-720L) and T (HUT-78) lymphocyte cell lines. CYS-AgNPs were synthesized via the chemical reduction. Transmission electron microcopy (TEM) imaging revealed that they exhibited a quasi-spherical shape with an average size of 18 ± 3 nm. CYS-AgNPs remained stable under mild acidic (pH 4.0) and alkaline (7.4 and 9.0) conditions, with an isoelectric point observed at pH 5.1. Following a 24 h treatment of lymphocytes with CYS-AgNPs, concentration-dependent alterations in cell morphology were observed. Positively charged CYS-AgNPs notably decreased lymphocyte viability. Furthermore, they exhibited grater genotoxicity and more pronounced disruption of biological membranes compared to negatively charged CYZ-AgNPs. Despite both types of AgNPs interacting similarly with fetal bovine serum (FBS) and showing comparable profiles of silver ion release, the biological assays consistently revealed that the positively charged CYS-AgNPs exerted stronger effects at all investigated cellular levels. Although both types of CYS-AgNPs have the same chemical structure in their stabilizing layers, the pH-induced alterations in their surface charge significantly affect their biological activity.

The human endometrium experiences significant cyclic morphological and biochemical changes throughout the menstrual cycle to prepare for embryo implantation. These processes are meticulously regulated by ovarian steroids and various locally expressed genes, encompassing inflammatory reactions, apoptosis, cell proliferation, angiogenesis, differentiation (tissue formation), and tissue remodeling. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been recognized as crucial regulators of gene expression, with their altered expression being linked to the onset and progression of various disorders, including cancer. This review examines the expression of miRNAs in the endometrium and their potential regulatory roles under pathological conditions such as endometriosis, recurrent implantation failure and endometrial cancer. Given miRNAs' critical role in maintaining gene expression stability, understanding the regulatory mechanisms of endometrial miRNAs and identifying their specific target genes could pave the way for developing preventive and therapeutic strategies targeting specific genes associated with these reproductive disorders.

This work presents comprehensive studies of the adsorption of neutral and ionic forms of organic adsorbates from aqueous solutions on activated carbon. The influence of pH on the equilibrium and kinetics of the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) and organic acids, benzoic (BA), 2-nitrobenzoic (2-NBA), 3-nitrobenzoic (3-NBA), and 4-nitrobenzoic (4-NBA) acid, was investigated. Experimental adsorption isotherms were analyzed using the generalized Langmuir isotherm equation (R 2 = 0.932-0.995). Adsorption rate data were studied using multiple adsorption kinetics equations, of which the multi-exponential equation gave the best fit quality (R 2 - 1 = (6.3 × 10 -6 )-(2.1 × 10 -3 )). The half-time was also used to represent the effect of pH on adsorption kinetics. Strong dependences of the adsorption efficiency on the solution pH were demonstrated. In the case of organic acid adsorption, the amount and rate of this process increased with a decrease in pH. Moreover, larger adsorbed amounts of methylene blue were recorded in an alkaline environment in a relatively short time. The maximum absorbed amounts were 11.59 mmol/g, 6.57 mmol/g, 9.38 mmol/g, 2.70 mmol/g, and 0.24 mmol/g for BA, 2NBA, 3-NBA, 4-NBA, and MB. The pure activated carbon and the selected samples after adsorption were investigated using thermal analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

This work presents a comprehensive analysis of the adsorption of selected aromatic organic compounds on activated carbons. Both the equilibrium and kinetics of adsorption were studied using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The influence of a number of factors: pH, contact time, presence of an accompanying substance, adsorbate concentration, as well as the mass and size of adsorbent grains, on the adsorption process from aqueous solutions was investigated. Phenol, 2-nitrophenol, 3-nitrophenol, 4-nitrophenol and methylene blue (as an accompanying substance) were selected as adsorbates. GAC 1240W and RIAA activated carbons were used as adsorbents. The equilibrium data were analyzed using the generalized Langmuir isotherm equation (R 2 = 0.912-0.996). Adsorption rate data were fitted using a multi-exponential kinetic equation (1 - R 2 = (1.0 × 10 -6 )-(8.2 × 10 -4 )). As an additional parameter, the half-time was also used to present the influence of selected factors on the adsorption kinetics. An increase in the amount of adsorption was demonstrated with increasing contact time as well as with decreasing solution pH and adsorbent grain size. For selected systems, an increase in the adsorption rate was observed with increasing adsorbate concentration, adsorbent mass and at lower pH values. In some cases, the presence of an accompanying substance also resulted in an increase in adsorption kinetics. In the tested experimental systems, optimal conditions for adsorption were established (T = 298 K, pH = 2, contact time: 7 days, grain diameter: >0.5 mm and the ratio of the mass of the adsorbent to the volume of the adsorbate solution: 1 g/L). Additionally, the acid-base properties (potentiometric titration), morphology (SEM) and structure (TEM) of the used adsorbents were also examined.

The influence of carbon pore structure on the sorption process of selected cationic dyes has been investigated. The structure and surface of carbonaceous materials have been characterized basing on various techniques: scanning electron microscopy, low temperature nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and thermal analysis combined with identification of gaseous products. The kinetic and equilibrium adsorption measurements of Basic Violet 3, Basic Red 1 and Basic Blue 9 from aqueous media were performed. The studied carbons seem to be promising adsorbents towards dyes, taking into account the easy-to-use uniform spherical form of the granules and a complex type of porosity with micro-, meso- and macropores appropriate for large molecule adsorption., (© 2024 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

In this study, the synthesis and experimental theoretical evaluation of a new chitosan/alginate/hydrozyapatite nanocomposite doped with Mn2 and Fe2O3 for Cr removal was reported. The physicochemical properties of the obtained materials were analyzed using the following methods: SEM-EDX, XRD, FTIR, XPS, pH drift measurements, and thermal analysis. The adsorption properties were estimated based on equilibrium and adsorption kinetics measurements. The Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherms were applied to analyze the equilibrium data. The thermodynamic analysis of adsorption isotherms was performed. A number of equations and kinetic models were used to describe the adsorption rate data, including pseudo-first (PFOE) and pseudo-second (PSOE) order kinetic equations. The obtained test results show that the synthesized biomaterial, compared to pure chitosan, is characterized by greater resistance to high temperatures. Moreover, this biomaterial had excellent adsorption properties. For the adsorption of Cr (VI), the equilibrium state was reached after 120 min, and the sorption capacity was 455.9 mg/g. Molecular dynamic modeling and various experimental techniques, including multi-angle dynamic light scattering (MADLS), streaming potential, optical waveguide light spectroscopy (OWLS), quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM), were applied to determine the basic physicochemical parameters of fibroblast growth factor 21 in electrolyte solutions. The protein size and shape, cross-section area, dependence of the nominal charge on pH, and isoelectric point of 5.3 were acquired. These data enabled the interpretation of the adsorption kinetics of FGF 21 on bare and macrocation-covered silica investigated by OWLS and QCM. It was confirmed that the protein molecules irreversibly adsorbed on the latter substrate, forming layers with controlled coverage up to 0.8 mg m -2 , while their adsorption on bare silica was much smaller. The viability of two cell lines, CHO-K1 and L-929, on both bare and macrocation/FGF 21-covered substrates was also determined. It is postulated that the acquired results can serve as useful reference systems for designing complexes that can extend the half-life of FGF 21 in its active state.

Biomaterial science has contributed tremendously to developing nanoscale materials for delivering biologically active compounds, enhancing protein stability, and enabling its therapeutic use. This paper presents a process of formation of polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) prepared by sequential adsorption of positively charged polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDADMAC) and negatively charged heparin sodium salt (HP), from low polyelectrolyte concentration, on a solid substrate. PEM was further applied as a platform for the adsorption of a brain-derived growth factor (BDNF), which is a protein capable of regulating neuronal cell development. The multilayers containing BDNF were thoroughly characterized by electrokinetic (streaming potential measurements, SPM) and optical (optical waveguide lightmode spectroscopy, OWLS) techniques. It was found that BDNF was significantly adsorbed onto polyelectrolyte multilayers terminated by HP under physiological conditions. We further explore the effect of established PEMs in vitro on the neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cell line. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) confirmed that BDNF was released from multilayers, and the use of the PEMs intensified its cellular uptake. Compared to the control, PEMs with adsorbed BDNF significantly reduced cell viability and mitochondrial membrane polarization to as low as 72% and 58%, respectively. HPLC analysis showed that both PDADMAC-terminated and HP-terminated multilayers have antioxidative properties as they almost by half decreased lipid peroxidation in SH-SY5Y cells. Finally, enhanced formation of spheroid-like, 3D structures was observed by light microscopy. We offer a well-characterized PEM with antioxidant properties acting as a BDNF carrier, stabilizing BDNF and making it more accessible to cells in an inhomogeneous, dynamic, and transient in vitro environment. Described multilayers can be utilized in future biomedical applications, such as boosting the effect of treatment by selective anticancer as adjuvant therapy, and in biomedical research for future development of more precise neurodegenerative disease models, as they enhance cellular 3D structure formation., (© 2023. The adsorption of anti-Salmonella rabbit immunoglobulin (IgaR) on negatively charged polymer particles leading to the formation of immunolatex was studied using various techniques comprising atomic force microscopy (AFM) and laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV). Initially, the basic physicochemical properties of IgaR molecules and the particles, inter alia their electrophoretic mobilities, the zeta potentials and hydrodynamic diameters, were determined under different ionic strengths and pHs. Applying AFM, single immunoglobulin molecules adsorbed on mica were also imaged, which allowed to determine their size. The adsorption of the IgaR molecules on the particles leading to changes in their electrophoretic mobility was monitored in situ using the LDV method. The obtained results were interpreted applying a general electrokinetic model which yielded quantitative information about the molecule coverage on the particles. The obtained immunolatex was thoroughly characterized with respect to its acid-base properties and its stability upon storage. Notably, the developed procedure demonstrated better efficiency compared to commercially applied methods, characterized by a higher immunoglobulin consumption.

Controlling cellular adhesion is a critical step in the development of biomaterials, and in cell- based biosensing assays. Usually, the adhesivity of cells is tuned by an appropriate biocompatible layer. Here, synthetic poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC), natural chitosan, and heparin (existing in an extracellular matrix) were selected to assembly PDADMAC/heparin and chitosan/heparin films. The physicochemical properties of macroion multilayers were determined by streaming potential measurements (SPM), quartz crystal microbalance (QCM-D), and optical waveguide lightmode spectroscopy (OWLS). The topography of the wet films was imaged using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The adhesion of preosteoblastic cell line MC3T3-E1 on those well-characterized polysaccharide-based multilayers was evaluated using a resonant waveguide grating (RWG) based optical biosensor and digital holographic microscopy. The latter method was engaged to investigate long-term cellular behavior on the fabricated multilayers. (PDADMAC/heparin) films were proved to be the most effective in inducing cellular adhesion. The cell attachment to chitosan/heparin-based multilayers was negligible. It was found that efficient adhesion of the cells occurs onto homogeneous and rigid multilayers (PDADMAC/heparin), whereas the macroion films forming "sponge-like" structures (chitosan/heparin) are less effective, and could be employed when reduced adhesion is needed. Polysaccharide-based multilayers can be considered versatile systems for medical applications. Vimentin, a protein that builds part of the cytoskeleton and is involved in many aspects of cellular function, was recently identified as a cell surface attachment site for the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The present study investigated the physicochemical nature of the binding between the SARS-CoV-2 S1 glycoprotein receptor binding domain (S1 RBD) and human vimentin using atomic force microscopy and a quartz crystal microbalance. The molecular interactions of S1 RBD and vimentin proteins were quantified using vimentin monolayers attached to the cleaved mica or a gold microbalance sensor as well as in its native extracellular form present on the live cell surface. The presence of specific interactions between vimentin and S1 RBD was also confirmed using in silico studies. This work provides new evidence that cell-surface vimentin (CSV) functions as a site for SARS-CoV-2 virus attachment and is involved in the pathogenesis of Covid-19, providing a potential target for therapeutic countermeasures.

This article presents the development process of designing and testing poroelastic pavement based on highly polymer-modified bitumen. Poroelastic wearing course was composed of mineral and rubber aggregate mixed with highly polymer-modified bitumen, in contrast to previous trials, during which polyurethane resins were mainly used as binder, which led to several serious technological problems concerning difficult production, insufficient bonding to the base layer, and unsatisfactory durability. The laboratory testing phase was aimed at finding the proper composition of the poroelastic mixture that would ensure required internal shear strength and proper bonding of the poroelastic layer with the base layer. After selecting several promising poroelastic mixture compositions, field test sections were constructed and tested in terms of noise reduction, rolling resistance and interlayer bonding. Despite the very good acoustic properties of the constructed poroelastic wearing course, it was not possible to solve the problem of its insufficient durability. Still, the second major issue of poroelastic pavements that concerns premature debonding of the poroelastic layer from the base layer was completely solved. Experience gained during the implementation of the described research will be the basis for further attempts to develop a successive poroelastic mixture in the future.

Physicochemical properties of immunolatex, prepared by incubation of negatively charged polystyrene microparticles with polyclonal rabbit IgGs, were determined by a variety of experimental techniques. These comprised dynamic light scattering (DLS), laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The particle diffusion coefficient, the hydrodynamic diameter, the electrophoretic mobility, the zeta potential and the suspension stability were determined as a function of pH for different ionic strengths. The deposition of the immunolatex on bare and polyallylamine (PAH) functionalized mica was investigated using the microfluidic oblique impinging-jet cell, with an in situ, real-time image analysis module. The particle deposition kinetics was acquired by a direct particle enumeration procedure. The measurements enabled us to determine the range of pH where the specific deposition of the immunolatex on these substrates was absent. The adsorption kinetics of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein subunit with the receptor binding domain at abiotic surfaces was investigated. A combination of sensitive methods was used such as atomic force microscopy yielding a molecular resolution, a quartz microbalance, and optical waveguide lightmode spectroscopy. The two latter methods yielded in situ information about the protein adsorption kinetics under flow conditions. It was established that at pH 3.5-4 the protein adsorbed on mica and silica surfaces in the form of compact quasi-spherical aggregates with an average size of 14 nm. The maximum coverage of the layers was equal to 3 and 1 mg m -2 at pH 4 and 7.4, respectively. The experimental data were successfully interpreted in terms of theoretical results derived from modeling. The experiments performed for flat substrates were complemented by investigations of the protein corona formation at polymer particles carried out using in situ laser Doppler velocimetry technique. In this way, the zeta potential of the protein layers was acquired as a function of the coverage. Applying the electrokinetic model, these primary data were converted to the dependence of the subunit zeta potential on pH. Molecular dynamics modeling was applied to predict chitosan molecule conformations, the contour length, the gyration radius, the effective cross-section and the density in electrolyte solutions. Using various experimental techniques the diffusion coefficient, the hydrodynamic diameter and the electrophoretic mobility of molecules were determined. This allowed to calculate the zeta potential, the electrokinetic charge and the effective ionization degree of the chitosan molecule as a function of pH and the temperature. The chitosan solution density and zero shear dynamic viscosity were also measured, which enabled to determine the intrinsic viscosity increment. The experimental results were quantitatively interpreted in terms of the slender body hydrodynamics exploiting molecule characteristics derived from the modeling. In this work, alginate-carbon composites with different active carbon content were synthesized and studied by various techniques. The obtained materials can be used as adsorbents in the processes of removing organic pollutants from water. In this study, the effect of the immobilization of activated carbon in calcium alginate was investigated. Textural properties were determined by measuring low-temperature nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms. The largest specific surface area was recorded for ALG_C8 and amounted to 995 m 2 /g. The morphology of alginate materials was determined on the basis of scanning electron microscopy. The adsorption properties were estimated based on the measurements of equilibrium and adsorption kinetics. The highest sorption capacities were 0.381 and 0.873 mmol/g for ibuprofen and diclofenac, respectively. The generalized Langmuir isotherm was used to analyze the equilibrium data. A number of equations and kinetic models were used to describe the adsorption rate data, including first (FOE) and second (SOE) order kinetic equations, 1,2-mixed-order kinetic equation (MOE), fractal-like MOE equation (f-MOE), multi-exponential equation (m-exp), in addition to diffusion models: intraparticle diffusion model (IDM) and pore diffusion model (PDM). Thermal stability was determined on the basis of data from thermal analysis in an atmosphere of synthetic air.

Adsorption kinetics of human vimentin on negatively charged substrates (mica, silica, and polymer particles) was analyzed using atomic force microscopy (AFM), quartz microbalance (QCM), and the laser doppler velocimetry (LDV) method. AFM studies realized under diffusion conditions proved that the adsorbed protein layer mainly consisted of aggregates in the form of compact tetramers and hexamers of a size equal to 11-12 nm. These results were consistent with vimentin adsorption kinetics under flow conditions investigated by QCM. It was established that vimentin aggregates efficiently adsorbed on the negatively charged silica sensor at pH 3.5 and 7.4, forming compact layers with the coverage reaching 3.5 mg m -2 . Additionally, the formation of the vimentin corona at polymer particles was examined using the LDV method and interpreted in terms of the electrokinetic model. This allowed us to determine the zeta potential of the corona as a function of pH and the electrokinetic charge of aggregates, which was equal to -0.7 e nm -2 at pH 7.4 in a 10 mM NaCl solution. The anomalous adsorption of aggregates exhibiting an average negative charge on the negatively charged substrates was interpreted as a result of a heterogeneous charge distribution. These investigations confirmed that it is feasible to deposit stable vimentin layers both at planar substrates and at carrier particles with well-controlled coverage and zeta potential. They can be used for investigations of vimentin interactions with various ligands including receptors of the innate immune system, immunoglobulins, bacterial virulence factors, and spike proteins of viruses.

Spectrum sensing (SS) is an important tool in finding new opportunities for spectrum sharing. The users, called Secondary Users (SU), who do not have a license to transmit without hindrance, need to employ SS in order to detect and use the spectrum without interfering with the licensed users' (primary users' (PUs')) transmission. Deep learning (DL) has proven to be a good choice as an intelligent SS algorithm that considers radio environmental factors in the decision-making process. It is impossible though for SU to collect the required data and train complex DL models. In this paper, we propose to employ a Federated Learning (FL) algorithm in order to distribute data collection and model training processes over many devices. The proposed method categorizes FL devices into groups by their mean Signal-to-Noise ratio (SNR) and creates a common DL model for each group in the iterative process. The results show that detection accuracy obtained via the FL algorithm is similar to detection accuracy obtained by employing several DL models, namely convolutional neural networks (CNNs), specialized in spectrum detection for a PU signal with a given mean SNR value. At the same time, the main goal of simplification of the SS process in the network is achieved.

In many countries, work is being conducted to introduce Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) systems intended for continuous and automatic control of gross vehicle weight. Such systems are also called WIM systems for direct enforcement (e-WIM). The achievement of introducing e-WIM systems is conditional on ensuring constant, known, and high-accuracy dynamic weighing of vehicles. WIM systems weigh moving vehicles, and on this basis, they estimate static parameters, i.e., static axle load and gross vehicle weight. The design and principle of operation of WIM systems result in their high sensitivity to many disturbing factors, including climatic factors. As a result, weighing accuracy fluctuates during system operation, even in the short term. The article presents practical aspects related to the identification of factors disturbing measurement in WIM systems as well as methods of controlling, improving and stabilizing the accuracy of weighing results. Achieving constant high accuracy in weighing vehicles in WIM systems is a prerequisite for their use in the direct enforcement mode. The research results presented in this paper are a step towards this goal.

The deposition kinetics of polymer particles with fibrinogen molecule coronas at bare and poly-L-lysine (PLL) modified mica was studied using the microfluid impinging-jet cell. Basic physicochemical characteristics of fibrinogen and the particles were acquired using dynamic light scattering and the electrophoretic mobility methods, whereas the zeta potential of the substrates was determined using streaming potential measurements. Subsequently, an efficient method for the preparation of the particles with coronas, characterized by a controlled fibrinogen coverage, was developed. This enabled us to carry out measurements, which confirmed that the deposition kinetics of the particles at mica vanished at pH above 5. In contrast, the particle deposition of PLL modified mica was at maximum for pH above 5. It was shown that the deposition kinetics could be adequately analyzed in terms of the mean-field approach, analogously to the ordinary colloid particle behavior. This contrasts the fibrinogen molecule behavior, which efficiently adsorbs at negatively charged substrates for the entire range pHs up to 9.7. These results have practical significance for conducting label-free immunoassays governed by the specific antigen/antibody interactions.
