Radiation and radioactive substances result in the production of radioactive wastes which require safe management and disposal to avoid risks to human health and the environment. To ensure permanent safe disposal, the performance of a deep geological repository for radioactive waste is assessed against internationally agreed risk‐based standards. Assessing postclosure safety of the future system's evolution includes screening of features, events, and processes (FEPs) relevant to the situation, their subsequent development into scenarios, and finally the development and execution of safety assessment (SA) models. Global FEP catalogs describe important natural and man‐made repository system features and identify events and processes that may affect these features into the future. By combining FEPs, many of which are uncertain, different possible future system evolution scenarios are derived. Repository licensing should consider both the reference or "base" evolution as well as alternative futures that may lead to radiation release, pollution, or exposures. Scenarios are used to derive and consider both base and alternative evolutions, often through production of scenario‐specific SA models and the recombination of their results into an assessment of the risk of harm. While the FEP‐based scenario development process outlined here has evolved somewhat since its development in the 1980s, the fundamental ideas remain unchanged. A spectrum of common approaches is given here (e.g., bottom–up vs. top–down scenario development, probabilistic vs. bounding handling of uncertainty), related to how individual numerical models for possible futures are converted into a determination as to whether the system is safe (i.e., how aleatoric uncertainty and scenarios are integrated through bounding or Monte Carlo approaches). Assessing future climate scenarios plays a fundamental role in evaluating the long-term safety of a repository for high-level radioactive waste (HAW). Over the assessment period of 1 million years, the repository is affected by various processes and developments that must be considered in the design of the repository. Predictions are complicated by the dynamics of the climate and are subject to uncertainties. The aim of this study is to evaluate uncertainties for various climate-induced processes that are relevant for the safety assessment of a repository for HAW. This research addresses fundamental questions concerning the impact of future cold stages on different regions of Germany, the differences between past and future cold stages, the transfer of future climate developments to stylized climate models, and the uncertainties resulting from these models. The study identifies the primary climate processes that could potentially affect the evolution of a HAW repository, including the formation of glaciers or ice sheets, the development of permafrost conditions, fluctuations in sea level, erosion, and isostatic adjustment. These processes can be represented in numerical groundwater models through parameter variations. In this project, these parameter variations and the impact of climatic states on different processes will be modeled for a sensitivity study. Finally, the results will be analyzed with respect to uncertainties, and possible improvements to dealing with uncertainties will be discussed. During the NEA initiative Preservation of Records, Knowledge and Memories (RK&M) Across Generations, a systemic approach was developed to establish a diverse RK&M preservation strategy that integrates multiple and complementary methods with varying characteristics (NEA, 2019a). One of these methods concerns the preservation of a so-called Set of Essential Records (SER) (NEA, 2019b). The SER is proposed as a collection of the most important records for waste disposal selected for permanent preservation during the repository lifetime. The goals are (i) to provide members of future generations, primarily professionals, with knowledge of radioactive waste management (RWM), the contextual information that helps them to understand the repository system and its implementation process on a deeper technological and societal level, and (ii) to reduce the number of records deemed for preservation to a manageable set and thereby rationalize required resources. On a generic abstract basis, a procedure for how to identify and select the essential records from the vast number of records produced during a repository program has been proposed (NEA, 2019b). However, the actual approach for how to implement the SER has not yet been defined. The current project tests how this abstract procedure can be implemented by applying it to the records of a "real" repository (currently under construction), i.e., the Konrad mine for the disposal of low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste in Germany, anchoring it in an existing research and technical context. This helps to check which tools can contribute to the procedure and to evaluate how far the process can be automatized. Special challenges arise from the fact that the license application for construction and operation of the repository was submitted in 1989, and many key records are already more than 30 years old. During the course of this study, 77 016 records, including 4866 full reports, were accessible in the Konrad record management system. Different approaches and tools have been applied to test an efficient record-selection procedure, which reduced the SER to about 150 records. In large mountainous catchments, shallow unconfined alluvial aquifers play an important role in conveying subsurface runoff to the foreland. Their relatively small extent poses a serious problem for ground water flow models on the river basin scale. River basin scale models describing the entire water cycle are necessary in integrated water resources management and to study the impact of global climate change on ground water resources. Integrated regional-scale models must use a coarse, fixed discretization to keep computational demands low and to facilitate model coupling. This can lead to discrepancies between model discretization and the geometrical properties of natural systems. Here, an approach to overcome this discrepancy is discussed using the example of the German-Austrian Upper Danube catchment, where a coarse ground water flow model was developed using MODFLOW. The method developed uses a modified concept from a hydrological catchment drainage analysis in order to adapt the aquifer geometry such that it respects the numerical requirements of the chosen discretization, that is, the width and the thickness of cells as well as gradients and connectivity of the catchment. In order to show the efficiency of the developed method, it was tested and compared to a finely discretized ground water model of the Ammer subcatchment. The results of the analysis prove the applicability of the new approach and contribute to the idea of using physically based ground water models in large catchments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This paper presents part-load evaluation of a natural gas-fired chemical looping combustion (CLC) combined cycle with CO2 capture. The novel combined cycle employs an air-based gas turbine, a CO2-turbine and a steam turbine cycle. In this combined cycle, the CLC reactors replace combustion chamber of the gas turbine. The proposed combined cycle has a net plant efficiency of about 52.2% at full-load, including CO2 compression to 200bar. The part-load evaluation shows that reducing the load down to 60% results in an efficiency drop of 2.6%-points. However, the plant shows better relative part-load efficiency compared to conventional combined cycles. The pressure in CLC-reduction and -oxidation reactors is balanced by airflow control, using a compressor equipped with variable guide vanes. A combination of control strategies is discussed for plant start-up and shutdown and for part-load when airflow reduction is not practically possible with current generation of compressors. The results show that the combined cycle has a promising efficiency even at part-load; however, it requires an advanced control strategy. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The research project GLOWA-Danube, financed by the German Federal Government, is investigating long-term changes in the water cycle of the upper Danube river basin (77,000km2) in light of global climatic change. Its aim is to build a fully integrated decision-support tool “DANUBIA” that combines the competence of 11 different research institutes in domains covering all major aspects governing the water cycle—from the formation of clouds, to groundwater flow patterns, to the behaviour of the water consumer. Both the influence of natural changes in the ecosystem, such as climate change, and changes in human behaviour, such as changes in land use or water consumption, are considered. DANUBIA is comprised of 15 individual disciplinary models that are connected via customized interfaces that facilitate network-based parallel calculations. The strictly object-oriented DANUBIA architecture was developed using the graphical notation tool UML (Unified Modeling Language) and has been implemented in Java code. All models use the same spatial discretisation for the exchange of data (1×1km grid cells) but are using different time steps. The representation of a vast number of relevant physical and social processes that occur at different spatial and temporal scales is a very demanding task. In order to improve tissue integration, the neck region of dental implants was coated with the biodegradable polymer poly (L-lactide) incorporating tetracycline, ibuprofen and the combination of both drugs using a solvent dip-coating process. Metallographic analysis, light microscopy and electron microscopy were used to detect the thickness range and the surface characteristics of the coatings. Cytotoxicity was evaluated using the tetrazolium colorimetric method with the fibroblast cell line L929. The in vitro drug release was measured in isotonic sodium chloride solution by UV spectroscopy. To explore if drug release is concentration-dependent, the total amount of drug was varied in the coating (20% wt, 30% wt and 40% wt). The results showed a continuous release of the embedded drugs in relevant dosage over a period of 6 months. In contrast to high tetracycline concentrations, high ibuprofen concentrations resulted in a decreased metabolic activity of the L929 fibroblasts.
