In the current study, data collected from Wave 6 of the Millennium Cohort Study (n = 11,872), a nationally representative sample survey of youth aged 14 years in the UK, are used to examine the prevalence of loneliness among this age-group, investigate the feelings associated with the experience of loneliness among youth, explore the risk factors for loneliness among young people, and learn how they coped with loneliness. Given recent findings that youth are vulnerable to loneliness, the study assesses the prevalence of loneliness among adolescents across some important sociodemographic characteristics, such as nation of residence, gender, and ethnicity. We also identify the kinds of social experiences that accompany loneliness during adolescence, exploring friendship, relations with parents, social support, and bullying. Our key finding is that, in addition to the absence of desired social relationships, which has been typically identified as the ultimate source of loneliness, the presence of undesirable and even harmful social relationships is a major source of loneliness. This study uniquely brings together psychological and sociological perspectives to understand the experience of youth loneliness.

There is limited qualitative research on the experience of loneliness in adolescence, meaning key facets of the loneliness experience that are important in adolescence may have been overlooked. The current study addresses that gap in the literature and explores how loneliness is experienced in the context of adolescence from the perspective of adolescents. About 67 online counseling conversations between Childline counselors and adolescents (ages 12–18 years; 70% females) who had contacted Childline to talk about loneliness were analyzed using Thematic Framework Analysis to establish commonalities and salient issues involved in adolescent experiences of loneliness. Young people considered loneliness to be an intense experience that negatively impacted their daily lives. Experiences of loneliness revolved around difficulties with peer relationships, but turmoil at home worsened those experiences. Young people often employed short-term coping strategies that distracted them from loneliness. Issues with trusting others and self-worth acted as barriers to seeking long-term help. Recommendations include (1) the training of teachers and parents to recognize and support young people experiencing loneliness and (2) further research to establish the coping strategies that are used by adolescents who successfully overcome loneliness. Summary Background Aim Methods Results Conclusions Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is common among individuals with eating disorders. The relationship between these conditions is likely bidirectional. However, data on the risk of IBS among those with prior eating disorders is largely limited to cross‐sectional studies.To prospectively evaluate the association between maladaptive weight control/eating behaviours in females during adolescence/young adulthood with subsequent IBS using the Growing Up Today Study (GUTS).Starting in 1996 (age: 9–14) and during follow‐up, participants reported frequency of maladaptive eating/weight control behaviours during the past year to lose weight: self‐induced vomiting (n = 5740), laxative use (n = 5438), and fasting (n = 5522) in addition to reporting binge eating (n = 4459). Starting in 2001 and during follow‐up, participants reported if they had ever been diagnosed with an eating disorder (n = 5316). Incident IBS cases were identified from four questionnaire cycles (2013, 2014, 2016, 2019), with participants specifying the year of diagnosis if occurring before the questionnaire date. Multivariable logistic regressions adjusting for age, body mass index, and depressive symptoms estimated the associations of interest.Maladaptive weight control/eating behaviours were associated with increased IBS risk [ORs (95% CIs) for laxatives to lose weight = 3.67 (2.52–5.35), vomiting to lose weight = 1.83 (1.29–2.60), fasting to lose weight = 2.62 (1.86–3.70), and bingeing = 2.25 (1.54–3.28)] as was history of eating disorder diagnosis [OR (95% CI) = 3.42 (2.38–4.90)]. The magnitude of IBS risk increased with the frequency of maladaptive behaviours.There is evidence for the potential role of early maladaptive weight control/eating behaviours in the development of adult IBS among females. Coal mining under the Quaternary thick loose layer affects key strata breakage, Bed-separations development, ground subsidence, and other studies. This paper presents a method for solving the deflection of a large-deflection inclined thin plate under a thick loose-layer cover with additional lateral loads and midplane forces. The methods presented are based on the principle of large-deflection of thin-plate, energy method, and fracture mechanics theory. The 7225 work face in Anhui Province, China, was studied. Combined with the large-deflection inclined thin plate model, the initial breakage distance within the main roof plate was calculated to be 33 m with the initial breakage angle of 61.2°, and the period breakage distance was calculated to be 21 m with the period breakage angle of 55.4°. The distribution range of "Vertical Three Zones" from 7225 working face to the ground, including the height of the caved zone is 38.07 m, the height of the fractured zone is 41.13 m, and the height of the curved zone with the thick loose layer removed is 187.56 m. During the dynamic development of the principal key strata (PKS), the deflection value develops from 0 mm to 2714 mm with 7225 working face mining, and the maximum value of the spatial volume is 56,485 m3, which is verified by Three-dimensional Discrete Element Code (3DEC) numerical simulation. The dynamic development of Bed-separation within the overlying strata, with a maximum development height of 545.2 mm and a maximum volume of 11,228.1 m3 of the Bed-separation cavity. The dynamic development of the Bed-separation height and the cavity under different mining length and width conditions of the working face are also discussed. The large-deflection inclined thin plate model proposed in this paper effectively explores the dynamic deflection and fragmentation law of the overlying strata induced by the inclined working face of Longwall mining and provides a theoretical basis and computational model for quantitatively evaluating the dynamic development of the Bed-separation cavity. Cities play a crucial role in the carbon cycle. Measuring urban aboveground biomass (AGB) is essential for evaluating carbon sequestration. Satellite remote sensing enables large-scale AGB inversion. However, the apparent differences between forest and grassland biomass pose a significant challenge to the accurate estimation of urban AGB using satellite-based data. To address this limitation, this study proposed a novel AGB estimation method using the eastern part of the Zhahe mining area in Huaibei City as the study area, which integrates land cover classification, feature selection, and machine learning modelling to generate high quality biomass maps of different vegetation types in an urban area with complex feature distribution. Utilizing the GEE platform and Sentinel-2 image, we developed an object-oriented machine learning classification algorithm, combining SNIC and GLCM to extract vegetation information. Optimal feature variables for forest and crop-grass AGB inversion were selected using the Pearson–mRMR algorithm. Finally, we constructed nine machine learning models for AGB inversion and selected the model with the highest accuracy to generate the AGB map of the study area. The results of the study are as follows: (1) Compared with the pixel-based classification method, the object-oriented classification method can extract the boundaries of different vegetation types more accurately. (2) Forest AGB is strongly correlated with vegetation indices and physiological parameters, while agri-grass AGB is primarily associated with vegetation indices and vegetation physiological parameters. (3) For forest AGB modelling, the RF-R model outperforms other machine learning models with an R2 of 0.77. For agri-grass AGB modelling, the XGBoost-R model is more accurate, with an R2 of 0.86. (4) The mean forest AGB in the study area was 4.60 kg/m2, while the mean agri-grass AGB was 0.71 kg/m2. High AGB values were predominantly observed in forested areas, which were mainly distributed along roads, waterways, and mountain ranges. Overall, this study contributes to a better understanding of the health of local urban ecosystems and provides valuable insights for ecosystem protection and the sustainable use of natural resources. While the One Health framework has emphasized the importance of soil microbiomes for plant and human health, one of the most diverse and abundant groups—bacterial viruses, i.e. phages—has been mostly neglected. This perspective reviews the significance of phages for plant health in rhizosphere and explores their ecological and evolutionary impacts on soil ecosystems. We first summarize our current understanding of the diversity and ecological roles of phages in soil microbiomes in terms of nutrient cycling, top-down density regulation, and pathogen suppression. We then consider how phages drive bacterial evolution in soils by promoting horizontal gene transfer, encoding auxiliary metabolic genes that increase host bacterial fitness, and selecting for phage-resistant mutants with altered ecology due to trade-offs with pathogen competitiveness and virulence. Finally, we consider challenges and avenues for phage research in soil ecosystems and how to elucidate the significance of phages for microbial ecology and evolution and soil ecosystem functioning in the future. We conclude that similar to bacteria, phages likely play important roles in connecting different One Health compartments, affecting microbiome diversity and functions in soils. From the applied perspective, phages could offer novel approaches to modulate and optimize microbial and microbe–plant interactions to enhance soil health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While temperature has been shown to affect the survival and growth of bacteria and their phage parasites, it is unclear if trade-offs between phage resistance and other bacterial traits depend on the temperature. Here, we experimentally compared the evolution of phage resistance–virulence trade-offs and underlying molecular mechanisms in phytopathogenic Ralstonia solanacearum bacterium at 25 °C and 35 °C temperature environments. We found that while phages reduced R. solanacearum densities relatively more at 25 °C, no difference in the final level of phage resistance was observed between temperature treatments. Instead, small colony variants (SCVs) with increased growth rate and mutations in the quorum-sensing (QS) signaling receptor gene, phcS , evolved in both temperature treatments. Interestingly, SCVs were also phage-resistant and reached higher frequencies in the presence of phages. Evolving phage resistance was costly, resulting in reduced carrying capacity, biofilm formation, and virulence in planta, possibly due to loss of QS-mediated expression of key virulence genes. We also observed mucoid phage-resistant colonies that showed loss of virulence and reduced twitching motility likely due to parallel mutations in prepilin peptidase gene, pilD. Moreover, phage-resistant SCVs from 35 °C-phage treatment had parallel mutations in type II secretion system (T2SS) genes (gspE and gspF). Adsorption assays confirmed the role of pilD as a phage receptor, while no loss of adsorption was found with phcS or T2SS mutants, indicative of other downstream phage resistance mechanisms. Additional transcriptomic analysis revealed upregulation of CBASS and type I restriction-modification phage defense systems in response to phage exposure, which coincided with reduced expression of motility and virulence-associated genes, including pilD and type II and III secretion systems. Together, these results suggest that while phage resistance–virulence trade-offs are not affected by the growth temperature, they could be mediated through both pre- and postinfection phage resistance mechanisms. Existing dynamic single-point subsidence prediction methods of mining area earth-surface are mainly based on traditional leveling measurement data, which have single monitoring mode, high cost and easily destroyed observation points, and cannot guarantee real-time of earth-surface deformation information. Moreover, application of grey model for earth-surface subsidence prediction is only for a single model and its applicability is not analyzed according to characteristics of the model itself. Taking 7221 working face of Yuandian No.2 Mine as an experimental zone, earth-surface subsidence value is measured by differential interferometry synthetic aperture radar technology, and then GM(1,1) and grey Verhulst model that describe the relationship between subsidence and time are built separately for predicting earth-surface subsidence value, so as to realize the integration of earth-surface subsidence monitoring and dynamic prediction of mining area. Through comparing and analyzing fitting and prediction results of earth-surface subsidence value between GM(1,1) and grey Verhulst model, the applicability of the two grey models in earth-surface subsidence prediction of mining area is obtained: GM(1,1) should be used for short-term prediction from beginning of mining subsidence to early active stage if subsidence value curve of single point is approximately unimodal; when earth-surface subsidence enters into decline stage and subsidence value curve of single point is in flat-bottom saturation, gray Verhulst model should be used for medium and long-term prediction.

The early diverged Magnoliaceae shows a historical temperate-tropical distribution among lineages indicating divergent evolution, yet which ecophysiological traits are phylogenetically conserved, and whether these traits are involved in correlated evolution remain unclear. Integrating phylogeny and 20 ecophysiological traits of 27 species, from the four largest sections of Magnoliaceae, we tested the phylogenetic signals of these traits and the correlated evolution between trait pairs. Phylogenetic niche conservatism (PNC) in water-conducting and nutrient-use related traits was identified, and correlated evolution of several key functional traits was demonstrated. Among the three evergreen sections of tropical origin, Gwillimia had the lowest hydraulic-photosynthetic capacity and the highest drought tolerance compared with Manglietia and Michelia. Contrastingly, the temperate centred deciduous section, Yulania, showed high rates of hydraulic conductivity and photosynthesis at the cost of drought tolerance. This study elucidated the regulation of hydraulic and photosynthetic processes in the temperate-tropical adaptations for Magnoliaceae species, which led to strong phylogenetic signals and PNC in ecophysiological traits across divergent lineages of Magnoliaceae.

To assess the degree of heavy metal pollution in crops, this study focused on crop leaves subjected to varying levels of heavy metal copper (Cu) stress. After removing outliers and applying smoothing techniques, the spectral data underwent derivative (D) and multiplicative scatter correction (MSC). Competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) and specific spectral ranges (SSR) were employed to extract the feature bands. Six different combinations of data preprocessing methods were utilized. This model incorporates the semi-supervised learning method, which enables the reduction of time and cost associated with annotating large-scale data. It addresses the identification problem when the labelled data is limited. Finally, the eXtreme Gradient Boosting algorithm (XGBoost) is used to select the best model and discriminate the degree of heavy metal pollution in corn.
