Strong evidence indicates that environmental stressors are the risk factors for male testosterone deficiency (TD). However, the mechanisms of environmental stress-induced TD remain unclear. Based on our all-cause male reproductive cohort, we found that serum ferrous iron (Fe2⁺) levels were elevated in TD donors. Then, we explored the role and mechanism of ferroptosis in environmental stress-reduced testosterone levels through in vivo and in vitro models. Data demonstrated that ferroptosis and lipid droplet deposition were observed in environmental stress-exposed testicular Leydig cells. Pretreatment with ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1), a specific ferroptosis inhibitor, markedly mitigated environmental stress-reduced testosterone levels. Through screening of core genes involved in lipid droplets formation, it was found that environmental stress significantly increased the levels of perilipins 4 (PLIN4) protein and mRNA in testicular Leydig cells. Further experiments showed that Plin4 siRNA reversed environmental stress-induced lipid droplet deposition and ferroptosis in Leydig cells. Additionally, environmental stress increased the levels of METTL3, METTL14, and total RNA m6A in testicular Leydig cells. Mechanistically, S-adenosylhomocysteine, an inhibitor of METTL3 and METTL14 heterodimer activity, restored the abnormal levels of Plin4, Fe2⁺ and testosterone in environmental stress-treated Leydig cells. Collectively, these results suggest that Plin4 exacerbates environmental stress-decreased testosterone level via inducing ferroptosis in testicular Leydig cells.

Abstract There is strong evidence that obesity is a risk factor for poor semen quality. However, the effects of multigenerational paternal obesity on the susceptibility to cadmium (a reproductive toxicant)-induced spermatogenesis disorders in offspring remain unknown. Here, we show that, in mice, spermatogenesis and retinoic acid levels become progressively lower as the number of generations exposed to a high-fat diet increase. Furthermore, exposing several generations of mice to a high fat diet results in a decrease in the expression of Wt1, a transcription factor upstream of the enzymes that synthesize retinoic acid. These effects can be rescued by injecting adeno-associated virus 9-Wt1 into the mouse testes of the offspring. Additionally, multigenerational paternal high-fat diet progressively increases METTL3 and Wt1 N6-methyladenosine levels in the testes of offspring mice. Mechanistically, treating the fathers with STM2457, a METTL3 inhibitor, restores obesity-reduced sperm count, and decreases Wt1 N6-methyladenosine level in the mouse testes of the offspring. A case-controlled study shows that human donors who are overweight or obese exhibit elevated N6-methyladenosine levels in sperm and decreased sperm concentration. Collectively, these results indicate that multigenerational paternal obesity enhances the susceptibility of the offspring to spermatogenesis disorders by increasing METTL3-mediated Wt1 N6-methyladenosine modification.

Background Superior mesenteric artery syndrome (SMAS) is a rare condition, for which laparoscopic surgery was successfully performed safely and with long-term efficacy.Methods This single center retrospective clinical study comprised 66 patients with SMAS, surgically treated between January 2010 and January 2020, who were allocated to three different surgical groups according to their medical history and symptoms (Laparoscopic duodenojejunostomy, n = 35; Gastrojejunostomy, n = 16; Duodenojejunostomy plus gastrojejunostomy, n = 15). The long-existing problem of high positioning inaccuracy by triangulation in the far region in short-range vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication environments is investigated in this study. The triangulation is achieved by sensing angle of arrival with two optical signal-direction sensors developed in our previous works. The measured signal-direction error can be categorized into two different kinds, namely systematic error and random error. The former is mainly incurred by imperfect calibration of hardware and misalignment of signal-direction sensors as well as multipath scattering of the signal. The latter is caused by random noises. Both of them lead to positioning error. By utilizing the specific characteristics pertaining to the triangulation measurements, it is possible to extract the target location and increase the accuracy with an optimization algorithm. With the aid of a general-purpose optimization subroutine together with two proper objective functions developed in this study, this work shows the viability of this idea. With the technique proposed in this paper, precise hardware calibration and careful alignment of signal-direction sensors are unnecessary. The problem of multipath scattering can also be mitigated. This work indicates a possible direction to treat the problem of high inaccuracy in noisy and ill-geometric environments in triangulation measurement. The abovementioned signal-direction sensors are currently constructed for infrared light. By changing the signal sources and detectors, they can also be fabricated for visible light. Such an alteration of transmission medium is beneficial for the currently emerging short-range visible-light intervehicular communications.

Abstract Background The clinical efficiency of routine oxygen therapy is uncertain in patients with acute heart failure (AHF) who do not have hypoxemia. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between oxygen therapy and clinical outcomes in normoxemic patients hospitalized with AHF using real-world data. Methods Normoxemic patients diagnosed with AHF on ICU admission from the electronic ICU (eICU) Collaborative Research Database were included in the current study, in which the study population was divided into the oxygen therapy group and the ambient-air group. Propensity score matching (PSM) was applied to create a balanced covariate distribution between patients receiving supplemental oxygen and those exposed to ambient air. Linear regression and logistic regression models were performed to assess the associations between oxygen therapy and length of stay (LOS), and all-cause in-hospital as well as ICU mortality rates, respectively. A series of sensitivity and subgroup analyses were conducted to further validate the robustness of our findings. Results A total of 2922 normoxemic patients with AHF were finally included in the analysis. Overall, 42.1% (1230/2922) patients were exposed to oxygen therapy, and 57.9% (1692/2922) patients did not receive oxygen therapy (defined as the ambient-air group). After PSM analysis, 1122 pairs of patients were matched: each patient receiving oxygen therapy was matched with a patient without receiving supplemental oxygen. The multivariable logistic model showed that there was no significant interaction between the ambient air and oxygen group for all-cause in-hospital mortality [odds ratio (OR) 1.30; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.92–1.82; P = 0.138] or ICU mortality (OR 1.39; 95% CI 0.83–2.32; P = 0.206) in the post-PSM cohorts. Objectives: To explore the mechanisms of interferon-induced transmembrane protein 3 (IFITM3) in response to enterovirus-71-associated hand, foot and mouth disease (EV71-HFMD), in terms of DNA methylation, single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotype and gene expression. Methods: In total, 120 patients with EV71-HFMD (60 with mild EV71-HFMD and 60 with severe EV71-HFMD) and 60 healthy controls were enrolled in this study. SNP genotype, IFITM3 promoter methylation and mRNA expression of peripheral blood mononuclear cells were examined using the improved multi-temperature ligase detection reaction, quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and MiSeq, respectively. Results: The distribution of methylation in patients with EV71-HFMD was significantly lower compared with healthy controls, and the severe EV71-HFMD group showed the lowest frequency of IFITM3 promoter methylation. The average level of IFITM3 promoter CpG methylation was negatively correlated with IFITM3 mRNA expression, and hypermethylation of several specific CpG units contributed to IFITM3 downregulation. IFITM3 expression and promoter methylation correlated with EV71 infection progression, especially in the severe EV71-HFMD group. Compared with mild cases, genotype GG and the G allele of rs12252 were over-represented in patients with severe EV71-HFMD. Conclusions: IFITM3 methylation status and SNP genotyping may help clinicians to choose the correct treatment strategy for patients with EV71-HFMD.

BackgroundThis research aimed to explore the association between the RIG-I-like receptor (RIG-I and MDA5 encoded by DDX58 and IFIH1, respectively) pathways and the risk or severity of hand, foot, and mouth disease caused by enterovirus 71 (EV71-HFMD). In this context, we explored the influence of gene methylation and polymorphism on EV71-HFMD.Methodology/principal findings60 healthy controls and 120 EV71-HFMD patients, including 60 mild EV71-HFMD and 60 severe EV71-HFMD patients, were enrolled. First, MiSeq was performed to explore the methylation of CpG islands in the DDX58 and IFIH1 promoter regions. Then, DDX58 and IFIH1 expression were detected in PBMCs using RT-qPCR. Finally, imLDR was used to detect DDX58 and IFIH1 single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotypes. Severe EV71-HFMD patients exhibited higher DDX58 promoter methylation levels than healthy controls and mild EV71-HFMD patients. DDX58 promoter methylation was significantly associated with severe HFMD, sex, vomiting, high fever, neutrophil abundance, and lymphocyte abundance. DDX58 expression levels were significantly lower in mild patients than in healthy controls and lower in severe patients than in mild patients. Binary logistic regression analysis revealed statistically significant differences in the genotype frequencies of DDX58 rs3739674 between the mild and severe groups. GeneMANIA revealed that 19 proteins displayed correlations with DDX58, including DHX58, HERC5, MAVS, RAI14, WRNIP1 and ISG15, and 19 proteins displayed correlations with IFIH1, including TKFC, IDE, MAVS, DHX58, NLRC5, TSPAN6, USP3 and DDX58.Conclusions/significanceDDX58 expression and promoter methylation were associated with EV71 infection progression, especially in severe EV71-HFMD patients. The effect of DDX58 in EV71-HFMD is worth further attention.

Objectives. The aim of the study is to develop a nomogram for predicting postoperative portal venous systemic thrombosis (PVST) in patients with cirrhosis undergoing splenectomy and esophagogastric devascularization. Methods. In total, 195 eligible patients were included. Demographic characteristics were collected, and the results of perioperative routine laboratory investigations and ultrasound examinations were also recorded. Blood cell morphological traits, including the red cell volume distribution width (RDW), mean platelet volume, and platelet distribution width, were identified. Univariate and multivariate logistic regressions were implemented for risk factor filtration, and an integrated nomogram was generated and then validated using the bootstrap method. Results. A color Doppler abdominal ultrasound examination on a postoperative day (POD) 7 (38.97%) revealed that 76 patients had PVST. The results of the multivariate logistic regression suggested that a higher RDW on POD3 (RDW3) (odds ratio (OR): 1.188, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.073–1.326), wider portal vein diameter (OR: 1.387, 95% CI: 1.203–1.642), history of variceal hemorrhage (OR: 3.407, 95% CI: 1.670–7.220), and longer spleen length (OR: 1.015, 95% CI: 1.001–1.029) were independent risk parameters for postoperative PVST. Moreover, the nomogram integrating these four parameters exhibited considerable capability in PVST forecasting. The nomogram’s receiver operating characteristic curve reached 0.83 and achieved a sensitivity and specificity of 0.711 and 0.848, respectively, at its cutoff. The nomogram’s calibration curve demonstrated that it was well calibrated. Conclusion. The nomogram exhibited excellent performance in PVST prediction and might assist surgeons in identifying vulnerable patients and administering timely prophylaxis.

Gestational exposure to environmental Cd caused placental angiogenesis impairment and fetal growth restriction (FGR). However, its mechanism remained unclear. This study was to investigate the effects of Cd exposure during pregnancy on placental angiogenesis and its mechanism. Pregnant mice were exposed to CdCl2 (4.5 mg/kg) on gestational day (GD) 8 with or without melatonin (MT) (5.0 mg/kg), an anti-endoplasmic reticulum stress agent, from GD7 to GD15. Human primary placental trophoblasts and JEG-3 cells were stimulated using CdCl2 (20 μM) after MT (1 mM) preprocessing. We firstly found MT treatment obviously mitigated environmental Cd-induced placental angiogenesis disorder and reduction of the VEGF-A level. Mechanistically, MT reversed environmental Cd-downregulated the protein expression of VEGF-A via inhibiting glucocorticoid receptor (GR) activation. Notably, our data showed MT treatment antagonized Cd-activated GC/GR signaling via blocking PERK signaling and thereby upregulated VEGF-A and 11β-HSD2 protein expression. Based upon the population case-control study, the levels of VEGF-A and 11β-HSD2 protein in small-for-gestational-age placentae were significantly reduced when compared to appropriate-for-gestational-age placentae. Overall, environmental Cd exposure during gestation impaired placental angiogenesis via PERK-regulated GC/GR signaling in placental trophoblasts. Our findings will provide a basis for prevention and treatment of placental impairments and fetal growth restriction caused by environment toxicants in future.

The transmission property of acoustic wave in a waveguide composed of index-near-zero (INZ) and reciprocal-modulus-near-zero (RMNZ) has been investigated. As long as the connectivity of the INZ is not broken, the transmittance of acoustic wave in the waveguide is kept close to 100%, which is unaffected by the shape, the size as well as the number of these RMNZ components. In the waveguide, acoustic wave can go around these acoustic RMNZ components and transmits through the INZ spontaneously. The phenomenon of “percolation” of acoustic wave has been observed. Our work overcomes the limitation of such “percolation” of wave occurring only in the system of the vector waves. A new method of manipulating the acoustic wave in acoustic INZ medium is proposed. Further, we find that the RMNZ components can mainly eliminate the influence of impurities made up of soft medium or regular acoustic mediums on the transmission performance of the INZ waveguide effectively.

Tropical cyclone is a rapidly rotating storm system with severe excitation such as high wind. This severe excitation may change the performance of structures, such as bridges, wharves and wind turbine structures. It is very necessary to monitor this important change. Modal parameters are the ones to reflect the structural instinct behavior. However, many identification methods assume that the excitation is white noise, which is not the truth during high ocean wind excitation. Therefore, the modal identification method to deal with severe ocean wind excitation should be investigated. This paper proposes an innovative method to eliminate the effect of high ocean wind on modal identification. The formulation to generate an impulse response is described, where the effect of high wind is pointed. Then the elimination method is derived using the wind velocity spectrum and correlation function. After the wind field is simulated, the wind velocities and spectra at all accelerometer positions are obtained. The real impulse response form is obtained. Then, modal identification using the real impulse response is performed. Finally, a practical cable-stayed bridge is employed and modal identification is performed. The results show that the identified modes can reflect structural real behavior.

Background/Aims: This study aimed to evaluate whether galectin-3 (Gal-3) contributes actively to atrial fibrosis both in patients and experimental atrial fibrillation (AF) models. Methods: Mouse HL-1 cardiomyocytes were subjected to rapid electrical stimulation (RES) to explore Gal-3 expression and secretion levels by western blotting (WB) and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Neonatal rat cardiac fibroblasts were treated with conditioned culture medium and recombinant human Gal-3 to evaluate the activation of the transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1/α-smooth muscle actin (SMA)/collagen I (Col I) profibrotic pathway (WB) and fibroblast proliferation with a Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8). Furthermore, in the rapid atrial pacing (RAP) rabbit AF model, atrial Gal-3 expression and its effects on the profibrotic pathway were evaluated (WB and Masson’s trichrome staining). Moreover, 44 consecutive patients who underwent single mitral valve repair/replacement were included, consisting of 28 patients with persistent AF (PeAF) and 16 with sinus rhythm (SR). Coronary sinus blood was also sampled to test circulating Gal-3 levels (ELISA), and atrial myocardium Gal-3 and its downstream TGF-β1/α-SMA pathway were also measured by WB and immunohistochemical staining. Results: Gal-3 expression in HL-1 cells and its secretion level in culture medium were greatly increased after 24 h RES. Treatment of neonatal rat cardiac fibroblasts with conditioned media collected from the RES group or recombinant human Gal-3 protein (10 and 30 µg/mL) for 72 h induced the activation of the TGF-β1/α-SMA/Col I profibrotic pathway. RAP increased Gal-3 levels and activated the TGF-β1/α-SMA/Col I pathway in rabbit left atria, while the Gal-3 inhibitor N-acetyllactosamine, injected at 4.5 mg/kg every 3 days, mitigated these adverse changes. Furthermore, Gal-3 levels in coronary sinus blood samples and myocardial Gal-3 expression levels were higher in the PeAF patients than in the SR patients, and higher level profibrotic pathway activation was also confirmed. Conclusions: Activation of Gal-3 expression in the atria can subsequently activate the TGF-β1/α-SMA/Col I pathway in cardiac fibroblasts, which may enhance atrial fibrosis.

Research results have identified the use of heat pipe heat exchangers (HPHXs) for heat recovery as a way to reduce the pre-cooling and re-heating energy. This paper suggests decoupling dehumidification from cooling to reduce energy consumption. The feasible usage and the energy saving potential of heat pipe heat exchanger at the air handler dedicated in accomplishing this objective is investigated. In this paper a dedicated ventilation system combined with a HPHX to reduce energy consumption is tested and investigated under varying conditions by laboratory experiments. The energy saving potential and heat pipe (HP) effectiveness are tested and calculated under various outdoor conditions. The simulation and experimental results demonstrate that for all cases examined, the average HP effectiveness and energy savings have the same trend at various outdoor temperatures and Relative Humidity (RH) values. It has been found that the heat pipe can be applied to save over 60% energy for the air-conditioning operating hours. The reduction in overall energy is from 1.8% to 2.8% for the whole system. Therefore, the results confirm that the proposed set-up is useful for buildings to achieve intended energy saving objectives in subtropical climates where air-conditioning demand is highly variable.

Drought stress is one of the major factors affecting in wheat yield and grain quality. In order to investigate how drought stress might influence wheat quality during grain filling, three wheat cultivars Gaocheng 8901, Jagger and Nongda 3406 were subjected to drought stress during the grain filling stage. Neither globulin and glutenin, nor the relative percentage of amylose significantly changed following drought treatments, whereas albumin and gliadin concentrations did. The SDS-sedimentation, which has a strong linear correlation with wheat baking quality was markedly decreased following drought stress. These results indicated that drought had an adverse effect on wheat quality. In order to investigate the protein complexes in the wheat flour, the data from native PAGE and SDS-PAGE were combined and a total of 14 spots were successfully identified, and of these eight protein types were determined to be potential complex forming proteins.

Two genes encoding putative glutathione S-transferase proteins were isolated from pear (Pyrus pyrifolia) and designated PpGST1 and PpGST2. The deduced PpGST1 and PpGST2 proteins contain conserved Glutathione S-transferase N-terminal domain (GST_N) and Glutathione S-transferase, C-terminal domain (GST_C). Using PCR amplification technique, the genomic clones corresponding to PpGST1 and PpGST2 were isolated and shown to contain two introns and a singal intron respectively with typical GT/AG boundaries defining the splice junctions. Phylogenetic analysis clearly demonstrated that PpGST1 belonged to Phi class of GST superfamilies and had high homology with apple MdGST, while PpGST2 was classified into the Tau class of GST superfamilies. The expression of PpGST1 and PpGST2 genes was developmentally regulated in fruit. Further study demonstrated that PpGST1 and PpGST2 expression was remarkably induced by glucose, salicylic acid (SA) and indole-3-aceticacid (IAA) treatments in pear fruit, and in diseased fruit. These data suggested that PpGST1 and PpGST2 might be involved in response to sugar, SA, and IAA signaling during fruit development of pear.

The gene encoding glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is down-regulated 24 hr after reversible brain ischemia, such as with a middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). The in vivo imaging of decreased GFAP gene expression in cerebral ischemia was examined in the present studies using a targeted peptide nucleic acid (PNA), which was labeled with 111 In, and which hybridized to nucleotides 20–37 of the rat GFAP mRNA. The PNA was monobiotinylated, and was attached to a monoclonal antibody (MAb) to the transferrin receptor (TfR) via a biotin–streptavidin linkage. The TfR MAb enables trans -membrane transport of the PNA antisense radiopharmaceutical from blood to the cytosol of brain cells. The decreased GFAP gene expression at 24 hr after a 1-hr reversible MCAO was confirmed by immunocytochemistry. The [ 111 In]-labeled PNA–MAb conjugate was administered intravenously to anesthetized rats at 24 hr after the 1-hr reversible MCAO, and the brain uptake of the targeted antisense imaging agent was decreased relative to brain regions outside of the infarct zone. These studies provide evidence that decreased expression of a target gene in brain can be imaged in vivo with a sequence-specific PNA, provided the antisense radiopharmaceutical is delivered across cell membranes with a receptor-specific targeting agent.

Magnesium hydroxide modified activated carbon (Mg-HAAC) was obtained from the raw material of activated carbon of Prunus mira Koehne shell prepared by phosphoric acid chemical activation method (HAAC). And the physicochemical properties, Copper (II) adsorption capacity and mechanism between them were investigated. Results showed that the maximum loading rate of HAAC on magnesium hydroxide was up to 3.77%, and the Mg-HAAC has the highest adsorption capacity on Copper (II) of 23.88 mg/g when the concentration of magnesium chloride used during modification was 2.0 mol/L. The small photoelectron peak of Mg1 s at the binding energy of 1304.08 eV in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) plot, the strong diffraction peak at the ϴ value of 19°, 38°, and 51° in the X-ray diffraction (XRD) plot, and the irregular small particles on the surface of sample in the scanning electron microscope (SEM) image all indicated HAAC had been successfully modified to Mg-HAAC. pH would affect the adsorption capacity of HAAC and Mg-HAAC on Copper (II), and the maximum adsorption capacity occurred at pH value of 7.0. The specific surface area increased from 1551.3 m2/g of HAAC to 1617.5 m2/g of Mg-HAAC. Under the optimal adsorption conditions, the maximum Copper (II) adsorption capacities of HAAC and Mg-HAAC reached up to be 41.92 and 58.03 mg/g, respectively. The analysis results of adsorption isotherm model, adsorption kinetics model, and thermodynamic indicate that the adsorption of Copper (II) by both HAAC and Mg-HAAC was monolayer chemical adsorption with an exothermic spontaneous process. These indicated magnesium hydroxide modification could significantly improve the adsorption capacity of HAAC on Copper (II), and the modified Mg-HAAC could be developed and utilized as an effective adsorbent for Copper (II) containing wastewater. Objective: With the development of Wendan decoction (WDD) and more literature on the research of WDD, we aimed to present an insight into WDD research using bibliometric analysis. Methods: We retrieved data from the Web of Science database from 2008 to 2022. Publication trends were examined using data from journals, authors, institutions, international collaborations, citations, and keywords from the online analytical platform Bibliometric (http://bibliometric.com). Results: Over the years, an increase in the use of keywords, including depression, insomnia, Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, hippocampus, and insomnia, was observed. The outcomes of the analysis revealed that topics related to WDD have become increasingly prevalent in the last five years, and the internationally recognized application of WDD is mainly neuropsychiatric diseases. Conclusion: We exhibited WDD research progress by identifying and evaluating WDD-focused articles. The (3+1)-D Kadomtsev-Petviashvili-Boussinesq-like equation is studied, and its bilinear form, Backlund transformation and Lax pairs are elucidated. Lump-type solutions are obtained, which include periodic lump and interaction lump solutions, through the three-wave method and the ansatz method. Under a frame of 2 × 2 matrix Lie algebras, Tu and Meng [9] once established a united integrable model of the Ablowitz-Kaup-Newel-Segur (AKNS) hierarchy, the D-AKNS hierarchy, the Levi hierarchy and the TD hierarchy. Based on this idea, we introduce two block-matrix Lie algebras to present an isospectral problem, whose compatibility condition gives rise to a type of integrable hierarchy which can be reduced to the Levi hierarchy and the AKNS hierarchy, and so on. A united integrable model obtained by us in the paper is different from that given by Tu and Meng. Specially, the main result in the paper can be reduced to two new various integrable couplings of the Levi hierarchy, from which we again obtain the standard heat equation and a special Newell-Whitehead equation. A fractional Whitham-Broer-Kaup equation is suggested using He's fractional derivative to model solitary waves in shallow water in porous medium near a dam. A modification of the exp-function method, the generalized exponential rational function method, is adopted to elucidate the basic solution properties of the equation, revealing that the value of the fractional order can be used effectively to control the wave velocity, the wave height, and the wave morphology. Because of the discovery of a high-symmetry rare-earth hexanuclear secondary building unit, controllable design and assembly of rare-earth organic frameworks (REOFs) have become feasible. Subsequently, series of isoreticular/structural fcu REOFs platform was herein successfully produced by solvothermal reactions and reticular chemistry. After the crystal structural information and permanent porosity were confirmed, thorough investigations toward photoluminescence and hydrothermal stability were implemented. As a result, distinct and interesting luminescence behavior is observed among the series of REOFs. 1-Dy and 2-Dy mainly display ligand-centered emission, while 1-Eu and 2-Eu are predominated by metal-centered emission. More interestingly, 1-Eu reveals excitation dependent luminescence, generating the first example of a white light emission phosphor in single phase fabricated from a sole Eu3+ ion and sole organic linker. 2-Eu however does not exhibit such features and stays mostly unchanged upon the variation of excitation light. The above luminescence features were correlated by determination of the triplet state T1 energy of both L1 and L2 linkers via the phosphorescence at 77 K of 1-Gd and 2-Gd. Lastly, water resistance of the series of fcu REOFs was valued and it was found that 1-Dy constructed from a smaller ion radius and shorter organic linker exhibits the most prominent hydrothermal stability among the series of REOF platforms. The present retrospective study aimed to investigate the mid-term safety and efficacy of hepatectomy combined with microwave ablation of the partial spleen for treatment of liver cancer complicated with hypersplenism. A retrospective analysis was performed on 23 patients who underwent hepatectomy combined with microwave ablation of the partial spleen for liver cancer, complicated with hypersplenism that was secondary to cirrhosis. The splenic and ablated volumes were calculated according to a contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan prior to and 2 weeks after the operation. Complete blood count and liver function tests were examined prior to and following the surgery, and complications and changes in the blood tests were monitored for 6 months. Over this period of investigation, the splenic volume was reduced by a mean value of 34.0%. The levels of serum alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase were increased on the first day after the operation (P<0.05), although they recovered to the normal level within 1 week (P<0.05). The total level of bilirubin increased slightly, along with moderately decreased levels of albumin and cholinesterase on the first day, although these changes were not significant compared with the baseline (P>0.05). The white blood cell count was persistently significantly higher compared with the baseline over the course of the 6 months (P>0.05). The platelet count did not increase significantly for the first week after the operation (P>0.05); however, it was revealed to be significantly increased 1 month after the surgery (P<0.05). No significant complications were occurred during the follow-up period. In conclusion, hepatectomy combined with microwave ablation of the spleen was demonstrated to be a safe and effective procedure for patients with liver cancer and hypersplenism in the mid-term. Background: Severe hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is sometimes associated with serious complications such as acute heart failure that can cause substantial child mortality. N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is a sensitive and specific biomarker of congestive heart failure. The aim of this study was to use plasma NT-proBNP levels to establish the severity of childhood HFMD. Methods: A retrospective study was performed in 128 Chinese patients with severe HFMD and 88 patients with mild HFMD treated between January 2014 and October 2015. Univariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were used to analyze the risk factors for severe HFMD. NT-proBNP levels were analyzed in 128 severe HFMD patients, and the predictive value of NT-proBNP was assessed by receiver operating characteristic analyses. Results: Multivariate analysis controlling for several potential confounders showed that enterovirus 71 infection [odds ratio (OR) 19.944, 95 % confidence interval (CI) 6.492–61.271], peripheral WBC count (OR 3.428, 95 % CI 1.186–9. 914), fasting glucose (OR 19.428, 95 % CI 2.236–168.784), procalcitonin (OR 9.084, 95 % CI 3.462–23.837, and NT-proBNP (>125 pg/mL) (OR 16.649, 95 % CI 4.731–58.585) were each associated with the severity of HFMD. The 45 dead severe patients had higher pre-procedural levels of NT-proBNP than the 83 cured severe patients (12776 ± 13115 versus 1435 ± 4201 pg/mL, P < 0.001). An NT-proBNP cutoff value of 982 pg/mL predicted mortality with 87 % sensitivity and 86 % specificity. A strategy is outlined for the synthesis of loline alkaloids. This second-generation approach features direct access to the requisite vicinal diamino motif by a Cu(OTf)2-mediated highly trans-diastereoselective vinylogous Mannich reaction (VMR) of Ellman N-tert-butanesulfinyl imine derived from isopropylidene-protected (S)-glyceraldehyde, with N-Boc-2-tert-(butyldimethylsilyloxy)pyrrole (TBSOP). Fleming's method was employed for the introduction of a hydroxyl group at C4 of the adduct, which gave the undesired diastereomer in 40% yield. The intramolecular SN reaction of the pyrrolizidine derivative to build the etheral bridge proved to be difficult, and produced N-Busnorloline in only 20% yield. In light of the valuable information gained during this investigation, an improved version of the second-generation approach is being investigated, which is expected to provide a concise and efficient access to the challenging loline alkaloids. Retinal pigmented epithelial cell (RPE) oxidative stress is known to have a vital role in the etiology of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The present study aimed to investigate whether allicin, a natural product with antioxidant activity, was able to protect RPEs (ARPE-19) from hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced damage, and to determine the underlying mechanisms. The 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl) -2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide assay was used to determine cellular viability, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were detected using a ROS Assay kit. The results demonstrated that allicin was able to protect ARPE-19 cells from H2O2-induced damage in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, allicin attenuated oxidative stress by reducing the levels of intracellular ROS and malondialdehyde (MDA), and enhancing the glutathione/glutathione disulfide (GSSG) ratio. With regards to the underlying mechanism, allicin was able to markedly modulate the expression levels of ROS-associated enzymes, including superoxide dismutase, NADPH oxidase 4 and NAD(P)H dehydrogenase quinone 1, and elevate the activity of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 in the H2O2-stimulated ARPE-19 cells. In this research, the application of heat pipes in the air handler dedicated to decoupling dehumidification from cooling to reduce energy consumption was simulated and investigated by simulations and experimental studies. The cooling load profiles and heat pipes with effectiveness of 0.45 and 0.6, respectively, were evaluated in achieving the desired space conditions and calculated hour by hour. The results demonstrated that for all examined cases, a heat pipe heat exchanger (HPHX) can be used to save over 80% of the energy during the hours of operation of air conditioning. The overall energy reduction rate was from 3.2% to 4.5% under air conditioning system conditions. It was found that the energy saving potential of a laboratory was higher than for other kinds of buildings. Therefore, the dedicated ventilation system combined with heat recovery technology can be efficiently applied to buildings, especially for laboratories in subtropical areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: MicroRNAs, small non-encoding RNAs that post-transcriptionally modulate expression of their target genes, have been implicated as critical regulatory molecules in endothelial cells. Results: In the present study, we found that overexpression of miR-19a protects endothelial cells from lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced apoptosis through the apoptosis signal-regulating kinase 1 (ASK1)/p38 pathway. Quantitative real-time PCR demonstrated that the expression of miR-19a in endothelial cell was markedly down-regulated by LPS stimulation. Furthermore, LPS-induced apoptosis was significantly inhibited by over-expression of miR-19a. Finally, both a luciferase reporter assay and western blot analysis showed that ASK1 is a direct target of miR-19a. Conclusions: MiR-19a regulates ASK1 expression by targeting specific binding sites in the 3' untranslated region of ASK1 mRNA. Poly(p-phenylene terephtalamide) (PPTA), a high-performance polymer with high modulus and good hydrophilicity, is often used as a reinforced material. However, due to its high crystallity, micro-phase separation often occurs in the blends. In this paper, PPTA/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) compatible blend solution was synthesized by in situ polycondensation. Blend ultra-filtration membrane was prepared through the immersion phase inversion process. In order to obtain desired pore structure, the effects of different additives including hydrophilic polymer (polyethylene glycol (PEG)), inorganic salt (lithium chloride (LiCl)) and the surfactant (Tween-80) on the morphology and performance of PPTA/PVDF blend membranes were studied. The membrane formation process was investigated through ternary phase diagram (thermodynamics) and viscosities (kinetics) analysis. It was found that, with the increasing of LiCl content, a porous membrane structure with long finger-like pores was formed due to the accelerated demixing process which resulted in the increase of porosity and pore diameter as well as the enhancement of water flux and the decline of PEG rejection. When Tween content increased to over 3 wt%, dynamic viscosity became the main factor resulting in a decreased phase separation rate. The transfer of PEG and LiCl molecules onto membrane surface increased the surface hydrophilicity. The spectral emissivity and transmissivity of zinc sulphide (ZnS) infrared windows in the spectral region from 2 to 12 µm and temperature range from 20 to 700°C is measured by a facility built at the Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT). The facility is based on the integrating-sphere reflectometry. Measurements have been performed on two samples made of ZnS. The results measured at 20°C are in good agreement with those obtained by the method of radiant energy comparison using a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. Background: Ischemic postconditioning (IPost) has aroused much attention since 2003 when it was firstly reported. The role of microRNAs (miRNAs or miRs) in IPost has rarely been reported. The present study was undertaken to investigate whether miRNAs were involved in the protective effect of IPost against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury and the probable mechanisms involved. Methods: Thirty SD rats weighing 250-300 g were equally randomized to three groups: Control group, where the rats were treated with thoracotomy only; IR group, where the rats were treated with ischemia for 60 min and reperfusion for 180 min; and IPost group, where the rats were treated with 3 cycles of transient IR just before reperfusion. The extent of myocardial infarction, LDH and CK activities were measured immediately after treatment. Myocardial apoptosis was detected by TUNEL assay. The myocardial tissue was collected after IR or IPost stimulation to evaluate the miRNAs expression level by miRNA-microarray and quantitative real-time RT-PCR. Real-time PCR was conducted to identify changes in mRNA expression of apoptosis-related genes such as Bcl-2, Bax and Caspase-9 (CASP9), and Western blot was used to compare the protein expression level of CASP9 in the three groups. The miRNA mimics and anti-miRNA oligonucleotides (AMO) were transferred into the cultured neonatal cardiomyocytes and myocardium before they were treated with IR. The effect of miRNAs on apoptosis was determined by flow cytometry and TUNEL assay. CASP9, as one of the candidate target of miR-133a, was compared during IR after the miR-133a mimic or AMO-133a was transferred into the myocardium. Results: IPost reduced the IR-induced infarct size of the left ventricle, and decreased CK and LDH levels. TUNEL assay showed that myocardial apoptosis was attenuated by IPost compared with IR. MiRNA-microarray and RT-PCR showed that myocardial-specific miR-1 and miR-133a were down-regulated by IR, and up-regulated by IPost compared with IR. Furthermore, IPost up-regulated the mRNA expression of Bcl-2, down-regulated that of Bax and CASP9. Western blot showed that IPost also down-regulated the CASP9 protein expression compared with IR. The results of flow cytometry and TUNEL assay showed that up-regulation of miR-1 and miR-133a decreased apoptosis of cardiomyocytes. MiR-133a mimic down-regulated CASP9 protein expression and attenuated IR-induced apoptosis. Conclusion: MiRNAs are associated with the protective effect of IPost against myocardial IR injury. IPost can up-regulate miR-1 and miR-133a, and decrease apoptosis of cardiomyocyte. Myocardial-specific miR-1 and miR-133a may play an important role in IPost protection by regulating apoptosis-related genes. MiR-133a may attenuate apoptosis of myocardiocytes by targeting CASP9. A series of cellulose/soy protein isolate (SPI) sponges was prepared using a freeze-drying process. The effect of the SPI content on the structure of the sponges was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It showed that the sponges were porous in structure, and that the size of the pores increased and the thickness of the pore walls decreased as the SPI content of the sponges increased. The biocompatibility and biodegradability of the sponges were evaluated in vitro and in vivo. The cell culture experiment and SEM observations showed that L929 fibroblast cells grew and spread well on the surface and cross-section of the composite sponges. The results from MTT (3-[4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazoly1]-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide) assay indicated that the cell viability of L929 cultured in extracts from SPI-containing sponges was higher than that from the pure cellulose sponge. The historical analysis and SEM observation revealed that the SPI-containing sponges implanted from 1 to 8 months in rats exhibited better in vivo biocompatibility and biodegradability than the pure cellulose sponge. This was due to the incorporation of SPI into cellulose and to the freeze-drying process which formed large pores and thin pore walls in the composite sponges, promoting the migration of cells and tissue into the sponges, leading to gradual fusing with the implants. As we all know, the Hamiltonian systems are the same describing forms as Newton mechanics and Lagrange mechanics. Therefore, researching for a new Hamiltonian structure of the soliton equations has important significance. In the paper, firstly, with the help of the Lie algebra R6, a few types of subalgebras are constructed, from which the corresponding equivalent tensor systems are given. For their applications, two integrable couplings hierarchies along with the multi-potential component functions generated from the soliton theory and the Virasoro symmetric algebra are obtained. Secondly, the Hamiltonian structures of the above integrable couplings are worked out, which may become another describing expression for the Newton and Lagrange mechanics. The development of suitable three-dimensional scaffold for the maintenance of cellular viability and differentiation is critical for applications in periodontal tissue engineering. In this work, different ratios of porous nanohydroxyapatite/chitosan (HA/chitosan) scaffolds are prepared through a freeze-drying process. These scaffolds are evaluated in vitro by the analysis of microscopic structure, porosity, and cytocompatibility. The expression of type I collagen and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity are detected with real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Human periodontal ligament cells (HPLCs) transfected with enhanced green fluorescence protein (EGFP) are seeded onto the scaffolds, and then these scaffolds are implanted subcutaneously into athyrnic mice. The results indicated that the porosity and pore diameter of the HA/chitosan scaffolds are lower than those of pure chitosan scaffold. The HA/chitosan scaffold containing 1% HA exhibited better cytocompatibility than the pure chitosan scaffold. The expression of type I collagen and ALP are up-regulated in 1% HA/chitosan scaffold. After implanted in vivo, EGFP-transfected HPLCs not only proliferate but also recruit surrounding tissue to grow in the scaffold. The degradation of the scaffold significantly decreased in the presence of HA.
