Species belonging to the genus Goniogryllus Chopard, 1936 are primarily identified based on their morphological characteristics. However, male genitalia provide limited features for classification. In this study, we sequenced the COI gene from 49 samples, and reconstructed a phylogenetic tree. Species were classified by a combination of molecular and morphological data, and some morphological features were re-evaluated. The results indicate that the presence or absence of pubescence on the thorax and abdomen, yellow stripes on the head with or without bifurcation, and the color of the maxillary palpus are interspecific differences. The classification based on these morphological features are consistent with the classification based on COI gene. In contrast, variations in the color of the hind femur, pronotum, and the number of dorsal spurs on the hind tibia are considered to be intraspecific variations. Additionally, Qingryllus striofemorus Chen & Zheng, 1995 and Q. jiguanshanensis Liu, Zhang & Shi, 2017 are recognized as the long-wing forms of G. ovalatus Chen & Zheng, 1996. Therefore, Qingryllus Chen & Zheng, 1995 syn. is a junior synonym of Goniogryllus. Q. striofemorus syn. nov. and Q. jiguanshanensis syn. nov. are junior synonyms of G. ovalatus. Furthermore, G. cirilinearis Xie, 2005 syn. nov. is a junior synonym of G. atripalpulus Chen & Zheng, 1996. G. octospinatus Chen & Zheng, 1995 syn. nov. is a junior synonym of G. chongqingensis Chen & Zheng, 1995. Lastly, Callogryllus yunnanus Wu & Zheng, 1992 is transferred to the genus Goniogryllus, as Goniogryllus yunnanus comb. nov.

Abstract The left atrial appendage (LAA) occluder is an important medical device for closing the LAA and preventing stroke. The device‐related thrombus (DRT) prevents the implantation of the occluder in exerting the desired therapeutic effect, which is primarily caused by the delayed endothelialization of the occluder. Functional coatings are an effective strategy for accelerating the endothelialization of occluders. However, the occluder surface area is particularly large and structurally complex, and the device is subjected to a large shear friction in the sheath during implantation, which poses a significant challenge to the coating. Herein, a hydrogel coating by the in situ UV‐triggered polymerization of double‐network polyelectrolytes is reported. The findings reveal that the double network and electrostatic interactions between the networks resulted in excellent mechanical properties of the hydrogel coating. The sulfonate and Arg‐Gly‐Asp (RGD) groups in the coating promoted hemocompatibility and endothelial growth of the occluder, respectively. The coating significantly accelerated the endothelialization of the LAA occluder in a canine model is further demonstrated. This study has potential clinical benefits in reducing both the incidence of DRT and the postoperative anticoagulant course for LAA closure.

Xanthoceras sorbifolium (yellowhorn) is a woody oil plant with super stress resistance and excellent oil characteristics. The yellowhorn oil can be used as biofuel and edible oil with high nutritional and medicinal value. However, genetic studies on yellowhorn are just in the beginning, and fundamental biological questions regarding its very long-chain fatty acid (VLCFA) biosynthesis pathway remain largely unknown. In this study, we reconstructed the VLCFA biosynthesis pathway and annotated 137 genes encoding relevant enzymes. We identified four oleosin genes that package triacylglycerols (TAGs) and are specifically expressed in fruits, likely playing key roles in yellowhorn oil production. Especially, by examining time-ordered gene co-expression network (TO-GCN) constructed from fruit and leaf developments, we identified key enzymatic genes and potential regulatory transcription factors involved in VLCFA synthesis. In fruits, we further inferred a hierarchical regulatory network with MYB-related (XS03G0296800) and B3 (XS02G0057600) transcription factors as top-tier regulators, providing clues into factors controlling carbon flux into fatty acids. Our results offer new insights into key genes and transcriptional regulators governing fatty acid production in yellowhorn, laying the foundation for efforts to optimize oil content and fatty acid composition. Moreover, the gene expression patterns and putative regulatory relationships identified here will inform metabolic engineering and molecular breeding approaches tailored to meet biofuel and bioproduct demands.

Abstract Coriaria nepalensis Wall. (Coriariaceae) is a nitrogen-fixing shrub which forms root nodules with the actinomycete Frankia. Oils and extracts of C. nepalensis have been reported to be bacteriostatic and insecticidal, and C. nepalensis bark provides a valuable tannin resource. Here, by combining PacBio HiFi sequencing and Hi-C scaffolding techniques, we generated a haplotype-resolved chromosome-scale genome assembly for C. nepalensis. This genome assembly is approximately 620 Mb in size with a contig N50 of 11 Mb, with 99.9% of the total assembled sequences anchored to 40 pseudochromosomes. We predicted 60,862 protein-coding genes of which 99.5% were annotated from databases. We further identified 939 tRNAs, 7,297 rRNAs, and 982 ncRNAs. The chromosome-scale genome of C. nepalensis is expected to be a significant resource for understanding the genetic basis of root nodulation with Frankia, toxicity, and tannin biosynthesis.

Angiogenesis has been considered a pivotal strategy for treating ischemic heart disease. One possible approach, the Shexiang Baoxin Pill (MUSKARDIA), has been noted to promote angiogenesis, but its underlying mechanism is still largely unknown. We aimed to determine the effects of MUSKARDIA on acute myocardial infarction (AMI), as well as the underlying mechanistic bases. AMI was induced in rats, using left anterior descending coronary arterial occlusion, and either 6 (low) or 12 (high-dose) mg/kg/day of MUSKARDIA was administered for 56 days. We found that MUSKARDIA improved cardiac function and counteracted against adverse remodeling among AMI rats, which most likely is due to it promoting angiogenesis. Transcriptome analysis by RNA-sequencing found that MUSKARDIA up-regulated cardiac pro-angiogenic genes, particularly growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15), which was confirmed by RT-qPCR. This up-regulation was also correlated with elevated serum GDF15 levels. In vitro analyses with human umbilical vein endothelial cells found that increased GDF15, stimulated by MUSKARDIA, resulted in enhanced cell migration, proliferation, and tubular formation, all of which were reversed after GDF15 knockdown using a lentiviral vector. Gene Ontology, as well as Kyoto Genes and Genomes enrichment analyses identified calcium signaling pathway as a major contributor to these outcomes, which was verified by Western blot and Cal-590 AM loading showing that transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 4 protein (TRPV4) and intracellular Ca2+ levels increased in accordance with MUSKARDIA-induced GDF15 up-regulation, and decreased with GDF15 knock-down. Therefore, MUSKARDIA may exert its cardioprotective effects via stimulating the GDF15/TRPV4/calcium signaling/angiogenesis axis.

To explore the correlation between earthquakes and the pre-earthquake ionospheric shallow frequency (ELF) electric field perturbations phenomenon, the paper investigated the pre-earthquake ionospheric perturbations phenomenon, and then the Spatio-temporal evolution characteristics of the electromagnetic field before and after the global Ms ≥6.0 strong earthquakes from 2019 to 2021 were statistically analyzed. In this paper, the power spectrum data of the ELF (19.5–250 Hz) band of ionospheric electric field observed by the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES) electric field detector are preclinically processed by the C-value method. A stable background field observation model was constructed using the data from 75 to 45 days before the earthquake observed by the CSES in the range of 15° above the epicenter. Then, the amplitude of the spatial electric field disturbance over the epicenter relative to the background field is extracted. Finally, the superposition analysis method statistically analyzes the spatial and temporal evolution of the spatial electric field before and after the earthquake with different characteristics. The statistical results show that the anomalies first appear in the fourth period (15–19 days before the earthquake) and the third period (10–14 days before the earthquake) and then reach the most vital and most evident during the pro-earthquake period (4 days before the earthquake and the day of the earthquake); In terms of the intensity of the anomalies caused, the magnitude seven earthquakes are stronger than the magnitude 6.0–7.0 earthquakes, and marine earthquakes are stronger than land earthquakes; in terms of the ease of observing the anomalies, the magnitude 7.0 and above are more accessible to observe than the magnitude 6.0–7.0 earthquakes, and marine earthquakes are more accessible to observe than land earthquakes.

Few incidents of ancient allopolyploidization (polyploidization by hybridization or merging diverged genomes) were previously revealed, although there is significant evidence for the accumulation of whole genome duplications (WGD) in plants. Here, we focused on Ericales, one of the largest and most diverse angiosperm orders with significant ornamental and economic value. Through integrating 24 high-quality whole genome data selected from ~ 200 Superasterids genomes/species and an algorithm of topology-based gene-tree reconciliation, we explored the evolutionary history of in Ericales with ancient complex. We unraveled the allopolyploid origin of Ericales and detected extensive lineage-specific gene loss following the polyploidization. Our study provided a new hypothesis regarding the origin of Ericales and revealed an instructive perspective of gene loss as a pervasive source of genetic variation and adaptive phenotypic diversity in Ericales.

Ferroptosis is a new form of programmed cell death (PCD) characterized by an excess iron accumulation and subsequent unbalanced redox states. Ferroptosis is different from the already reported PCD and has unique morphological features and biochemical processes. Ferroptosis was first elaborated by Brent R. Stockwell’s lab in 2012, in which small molecules erastin and RSL-3 induce PCD in Ras mutant cell lines. Ferroptosis involves various physiological processes and occurrence of disease and especially shows strong potential in cancer treatment. Development of small molecule compounds based on Stockwell’s research was found to kill cancer cells, and some FDA-approved drugs were discovered to result in ferroptosis of cancer cells. Radiotherapy and checkpoint therapy have been widely used as a treatment for many types of cancer. Recently, some papers have reported that chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and checkpoint therapy induce ferroptosis of cancer cells, which provides new strategies for cancer treatment. Nevertheless, the limitless proliferation of tumor cells and the lack of cell death mechanisms are important reasons for drug resistance for tumor therapy. Therefore, we reviewed the molecular mechanism of ferroptosis and sensitivity to ferroptosis of different cancer cells and tumor treatment strategy.

The capture and storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) are urgent and crucial to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality. Hydrate-based CO2 capture technology is one of the promising technologies for capturing and storing CO2. This work studied the nucleation and growth of CO2 hydrate provoked by direct current–voltage accompanied by charge flow with the agitation of 450 rpm at an initial pressure of 3.5 MPa and a temperature of 274.15 K. The results show that the physical bubble behavior and electrochemistry mechanisms could influence CO2 hydrate formation process in the application of voltage. The induction time and semi-completion time of CO2 hydrate formation were decreased by 51% and 27.8% in the presence of 15 V, respectively. However, more product of electrolysis, Joule heat and ions, could inhibit the CO2 hydrate formation process in the application of a high voltage (60 V). In addition, a high voltage (60 V) could change the morphology characteristics of CO2 hydrate from gel-like to whisker-like. This study provides valuable information on the formation of CO2 hydrate under the action of charge flow.

The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between genetic polymorphisms of azathioprine-metabolizing enzymes and adverse reactions of myelosuppression. To this end, a retrospective analysis was performed on 1,419 Chinese patients involving 40 different diseases and 3 genes: ITPA (94C>A), TPMT*3 (T>C), and NUDT15 (415C>T). Strict inclusion and exclusion criteria were established to collect the relative cases, and the correlation between azathioprine and myelosuppression was evaluated by adverse drug reaction criteria. The mutation rates of the three genes were 29.32, 3.73, and 21.92% and grades I to IV myelosuppression occurred in 54 (9.28%) of the 582 patients who took azathioprine. The highest proportion of myelosuppression was observed in 5 of the 6 (83.33%) patients carrying the NUDT15 (415C>T) TT genotype and 12 of the 102 (11.76%) patients carrying the NUDT15 (415C>T) CT genotype. Only the NUDT15 (415C>T) polymorphism was found to be associated with the adverse effects of azathioprine-induced myelosuppression (odds ratio [OR], 51.818; 95% CI, 5.280–508.556; p = 0.001), which suggested that the NUDT15 (415C>T) polymorphism could be an influencing factor of azathioprine-induced myelosuppression in the Chinese population. Epistatic interactions between ITPA (94C>A) and NUDT15 (415C>T) affect the occurrence of myelosuppression. Thus, it is recommended that the genotype of NUDT15 (415C>T) and ITPA (94C>A) be checked before administration, and azathioprine should be avoided in patients carrying a homozygous NUDT15 (415C>T) mutation. This study is the first to investigate the association between genetic polymorphisms of these three azathioprine-metabolizing enzymes and myelosuppression in a large number of cases with a diverse range of diseases.

The process of drilling in natural gas hydrate reservoirs in sea areas involves problems such as hydrate decomposition and wellbore instability. To study the response behaviors of a reservoir during the drilling process, a two-dimensional numerical model of drilling fluid invading a hydrate reservoir in a cylindrical coordinate system was established to simulate the processes of heat and mass transfer, gas–liquid two-phase flow, and hydrate formation and decomposition in the hydrate reservoir during the drilling process. Based on the hydrate reservoir at station W17, Shenhu area of the South China Sea, the physical property response of the hydrate reservoir under different drilling fluid temperatures and salinity values was studied. The simulation results showed that during the drilling process, the temperature and pressure of the reservoir respond rapidly in a large area, further promoting the hydrate decomposition in the reservoir around the wellbore and leading to secondary hydrate formation. Moreover, a high hydrate saturation zone appears near the decomposed hydrate area in the layer without free gas, which corresponds to the low water saturation and high salinity zone. The hydrate decomposition area in the layer with free gas is larger than that without free gas. The increase in the drilling fluid temperature significantly enhances the hydrate decomposition in both layers of the reservoir. The hydrate decomposition near the wellbore under the high drilling fluid temperature will cause a sharp increase in the pressure in the reservoir, leading to the flow of pore fluid into the wellbore. The increase in drilling fluid salinity has little effect on the range of the hydrate decomposition in the reservoir but significantly increases the salinity of the pore water in the layer with free gas. As the drilling fluid temperature increases, the possibility of the gas invasion from the reservoir into the wellbore will be greatly increased at the early stage.

Some countries are trying to drill and exploit natural gas hydrate (NGH). However, the disturbance effects of drilling on the stability of NGH-bearing sediments are unclear. There are still few experimental apparatuses on this issue, and existing experimental apparatuses cannot comprehensively simulate the drilling process as well. In order to fill this gap in prior studies, an experimental drilling apparatus used for evaluating drilling risks related to NGH was developed. The apparatus consists of a high-pressure vessel with a drilling system, a drilling fluid injection system, a drilling fluid treatment system, and a data acquisition system. Hydrates can form in the high-pressure vessel placed inside a walk-in cold room. The drilling fluid can be cooled to the desired temperature by the drilling fluid treatment system and be injected into the drilling system by the drilling fluid injection system. The drilling system can simulate the comprehensive drilling process, including drilling feed, trip up & down operations, drilling fluid circulation, etc. 48 thermometers were inserted into the high-pressure vessel from the bottom. The thermometers uniformly distribute in the high-pressure vessel, and they could quickly and accurately measure the hydrate phase change process under high-pressure and low-temperature conditions. • Simulate the drilling process in hydrate-bearing sediments. • Evaluate the influence of drilling parameters (drilling fluid temperatures, drilling fluid circulation rates, etc.) on hydrate dissociation characteristics around the wellbore. • Simultaneously evaluate the heat and mass transfer process in hydrate-bearing sediments during the drilling process.

Hydrate-based carbon dioxide (CO2) separation and capture is a new technology for achieving CO2 emission reduction. However, it is still not commercially applied for the ambiguity of microscopic hydrate formation mechanism. In a constant volume experiment of hydrate formation, there are two or more pressure platforms, indicating that there might be two or more different hydrates formation in succession. In order to reveal the relationship between the microscopic process and the gas consumption in the process of hydrate formation, hydrate composition and formation mechanism of cyclopentane-CO2 (CP-CO2) system was investigated using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and Raman spectroscopy. The results indicated CO2-CP binary hydrate and CO2 hydrate are formed successively, and they coexist in the final hydrate. CP-CO2 binary hydrates forms preferentially, and as crystal seeds, inducing the formation of CO2 hydrates. The two hydrates formation processes cause the two pressure-drops. The results provide a scientific basis for increasing the gas consumption in different stages of gas hydrate formation in the presence of hydrate formation promoter.

The combustion characteristics of both pure propane hydrates and the mixtures of hydrates and quartz sands were investigated by combustion experiments. The flame propagation, flame appearance, burning time and temperature in different hydrate layers were studied. For pure propane hydrate combustion, the initial flame falls in the “premixed” category. The flame propagates very rapidly, mainly as a result of burnt gas expansion. The flame finally self-extinguishes with some proportion of hydrates remaining unburned. For the hydrate-sand mixture combustion, the flame takes the form of many tiny discontinuous flames appearing and disappearing at different locations. The burn lasts for a much shorter amount of time than pure hydrate combustion. High porosity and high hydrate saturation is beneficial to the combustion. The hydrate combustion is the combustion of propane gas resulting from the dissociation of the hydrates. In both combustion test scenarios, the hydrate-dissociated water plays a key role in the fire extinction, because it is the main resistance that restrains the heat transfer from the flame to the hydrates and that prevents the hydrate-dissociated gas from releasing into the combustion zone.

Based on the available measurement data and literature on the hydrate deposits of the South China Sea, a numerical simulation with a new dual horizontal well system has been carried out. Warm brine stimulation combined with depressurization is employed as the production method. Two horizontal wells were situated in the same horizontal plane and they were placed in the middle of the Hydrate-Bearing Layer (HBL). The warm brine is injected from the left well (LW) into the reservoir, and the right well (RW) acted as the producer under constant pressure. The simulation results show that the effects of hydrate dissociation rate, gas to water ratio, and energy ratio are all better than the previous work in which the dual horizontal wells are placed in the same vertical plane. In addition, the sensitivity analysis indicates that a higher injection rate can enhance the hydrate dissociation rate and gas production rate, while a lower injection rate gives a more favorable gas to water ratio and energy ratio.

To evaluate the gas production performance of the hydrate accumulations in the South China Sea, a numerical simulation with warm brine stimulation combined depressurization has been conducted. A dual horizontal well system is considered as the well configuration in this work. In order to reduce energy input and improve energy utilization, warm brine (50 °C) is injected into the reservoir for hydrate dissociation. The effect of the intrinsic permeability of the hydrate reservoir, the salinity and the temperature of the injected brine to gas hydrate exploitation have been investigated. The numerical simulation results indicate that the average gas production rate Qavg is about 1.23 ´ 105 ST m3/day for the entire hydrate deposit, which has the same order of magnitude compared with the commercially viable production rate. The injected brine can be pumped out from the upper production well directly after the hydrate between the two wells is dissociated completely. Thus, the effective region of heat and inhibitor stimulation is limited. The sensitivity analyses indicate that the dissociation rate of hydrate can be enhanced by increasing the temperature of the injected brine and raising the salinity of the injected brine. The parametric study of permeability shows that the hydrate of the reservoir with the larger permeability has a higher dissociation rate.

A complete set of scaling criteria for gas hydrate reservoir of five-spot well system case is derived from the 3D governing equations, involving the mass balance equation, the energy balance equation, the kinetic model, the endothermic model and the phase equilibrium model. In the scaling criteria, the key parameters of the experiment are the water/gas production rates, the water injection rate, and the production time. By using the scaling criteria, the experimental results can be enlarged to a field scale. Therefore, the experimental results and the scaling criteria could be used to evaluate the hydrate dissociation strategies and the gas production potential of the hydrate reservoir.

Tetra-n-butyl ammonium bromide (TBAB) was widely used in the research fields of cold storage and CO2 hydrate separation due to its high phase change latent heat and thermodynamic promotion for hydrate formation. Agglomeration always occurred in the process of TBAB hydrate generation, which led to the blockage in the pipeline and the separation apparatus. In this work, we screened out a kind of anti-agglomerant that can effectively solve the problem of TBAB hydrate agglomeration. The anti-agglomerant (AA) is composed of 90% cocamidopropyl dimethylamine and 10% glycerol, which can keep TBAB hydrate of 19.3–29.0 wt. % in a stable state of slurry over 72 h. The microscopic observation of the morphology of the TBAB hydrate particles showed that the addition of AA can greatly reduce the size of the TBAB hydrate particles. CO2 gas separation experiments found that the addition of AA led to great improvement on gas storage capacity, CO2 split fraction and separation factor, due to the increasing of contact area between gas phase and hydrate particles. The CO2 split fraction and separation factor with AA addition reached up to 70.3% and 42.8%, respectively.

In this paper; the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor with a porous silica film was studied. The effect of the thickness and porosity of the porous silica film on the performance of the sensor was analyzed. The results indicated that the figure of merit (FOM) of an SPR sensor can be enhanced by using a porous silica film with a low-refractive-index. Particularly; the FOM of an SPR sensor with 40 nm thick 90% porosity porous silica film; whose refractive index is 1.04 was improved by 311% when compared with that of a traditional SPR sensor. Furthermore; it was found that the decrease in the refractive index or the increase in the thickness of the low-refractive-index porous silica film can enlarge the FOM enhancement. It is believed that the proposed SPR sensor with a low-refractive-index porous silica film will be helpful for high-performance SPR sensors development.

Reflectance confocal microscopy is successfully used in infant skin research. Infant skin structure, function, and composition are undergoing a maturation process. We aimed to uncover how the epidermal architecture and cellular topology change with time. Images were collected from three age groups of healthy infants between one and four years of age and adults. Cell centers were manually identified on the images at the stratum granulosum (SG) and stratum spinosum (SS) levels. Voronoi diagrams were used to calculate geometrical and topological parameters. Infant cell density is higher than that of adults and decreases with age. Projected cell area, cell perimeter, and average distance to the nearest neighbors increase with age but do so distinctly between the two layers. Structural entropy is different between the two strata, but remains constant with time. For all ages and layers, the distribution of the number of nearest neighbors is typical of a cooperator network architecture. The topological analysis provides evidence of the maturation process in infant skin. The differences between infant and adult are more pronounced in the SG than SS, while cell cooperation is evident in all cases of healthy skin examined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Transfemoral and perventricular device occlusions are performed for doubly committed subarterial ventricular septal defect (dcVSD) to reduce the invasiveness of the conventional surgical repair through a median sternotomy. Few comparative studies have been conducted of these three procedures. Methods Inpatients with isolated dcVSD who had undergone transfemoral and perventricular device occlusions or conventional surgical repair from January 2009 to June 2013 were reviewed to compare the three procedures. Results Procedure success was achieved in 33 transfemoral (66%), in 74 perventricular (94.9%), and in 205 repair (97.6%) procedures. The transfemoral group had the lowest success rate ( p < 0.001), whereas the perventricular and repair groups had similar success rates ( p = 0.418). Transfemoral patients were the oldest ( p < 0.001) and had a dcVSD size similar to that of patients in other two groups ( p = 0.518). The repair group required the longest hospitalization and longest stays in the intensive care unit ( p < 0.001), required the longest operating room and mechanical ventilation times ( p < 0.001), and had the highest rate of transfusion ( p < 0.001). Major adverse events occurred in one transfemoral (3%), in two perventricular (2.7%), and in three repair (1.4%) procedures. Minor adverse events were absent in transfemoral (0%) and occurred in three perventricular (4%) and 14 repair (6.7%) procedures. No significant difference was noted in the rates of adverse events the three groups ( p = 0.569). No grade 3 valvular regurgitation or complete atrioventricular block was observed in the studied patients. Conclusions Device occlusion may be an alternative to surgical repair in selected patients with dcVSD. Perventricular occlusion was the preferred approach because it showed a higher success rate than transfemoral occlusion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background. Percutaneous device occlusion and minimally invasive surgical repair for perimembranous ventricular septal defect (pmVSD) are two typical methods to reduce the invasiveness of the conventional operation through a median sternotomy. However, few studies have compared them in terms of effectiveness and cost. Methods. Inpatients with isolated pmVSD who had undergone percutaneous device occlusion or minimally invasive surgical repair from June 2009 to June 2012 were reviewed for a comparative investigation between the two procedures. Results. Procedure success was achieved in 80 percutaneous (93.0%) and in 113 surgical (98.3%) procedures (p = 0.076). Percutaneous patients were older, with a smaller VSD size than surgical patients (16 ± 11.7 vs 3.8 ± 2.4 mm, p<0.001; 4.0 ± 1.2 vs 4.3 ± 1.3 mm, p = 0.034, respectively). Major complications occurred in 1 percutaneous (1.2%) and in 4 surgical (3.5%) procedures (p = 0.602), and minor complications occurred in 27 percutaneous (33.3%) and in 37 surgical (32.2%) procedures (p = 0.991). The surgical repair cost 31% less than the device occlusion (¥20,565 ± ¥3,497 vs ¥29,795 ± ¥2,643, p < 0.001), where most of the cost was attributed to the occluder in the amount of ¥19,500. Conclusions. Compared with device occlusion, minimally invasive surgical repair can provide comparable efficacy and complication rates. In addition, it is 31% cheaper than device occlusion. In low-income countries where health care resources are limited, medical resources must be judiciously allocated to the treatment that allows for effective treatment of the largest number of patients. Rotation of dust clusters in an unmagnetized dusty plasma under different gas pressures is experimentally studied. Clusters containing different numbers of charged dust grains are found in different horizontal planes. The mechanism behind the dust rotation is investigated by using molecular dynamics simulations. The experimental and simulation results show that the radial confinement potential plays an important role in determining the properties of the cluster rotation under given gas pressure or temperature. To evaluate the gas production performance of the hydrate accumulations in the South China Sea, a numerical simulation with warm brine stimulation combined depressurization has been conducted. A dual horizontal well system is considered as the well configuration in this work. In order to reduce energy input and improve energy utilization, warm brine (<30 °C) instead of hot brine (>50 °C) is injected into the reservoir for hydrate dissociation. The effect of the intrinsic permeability of the hydrate reservoir, the salinity and the temperature of the injected brine to gas hydrate exploitation have been investigated. The numerical simulation results indicate that the average gas production rate Qavg is about 1.23 x 105 ST m³ /day for the entire hydrate deposit, which has the same order of magnitude compared with the commercially viable production rate. The injected brine can be pumped out from the upper production well directly after the hydrate between the two wells is dissociated completely. Thus, the effective region of heat and inhibitor stimulation is limited. The sensitivity analyses indicate that the dissociation rate of hydrate can be enhanced by increasing the temperature of the injected brine and raising the salinity of the injected brine. A complete set of scaling criteria for gas hydrate reservoir of five-spot well system case is derived from the 3D governing equations, involving the mass balance equation, the energy balance equation, the kinetic model, the endothermic model and the phase equilibrium model. In the scaling criteria, the key parameters of the experiment are the water/gas production rates, the water injection rate, and the production time. By using the scaling criteria, the experimental results can be enlarged to a field scale. Therefore, the experimental results and the scaling criteria could be used to evaluate the hydrate dissociation strategies and the gas production potential of the hydrate reservoir. Adopting small-world neural networks of the Hodgkin-Huxley (HH) model, the stimulation parameters in desynchronisation and its possible implications for vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) are numerically investigated. With the synchronisation status of networks to represent epilepsy, then, adding pulse to stimulations to 10% of neurons to simulate the VNS, we obtain the desynchronisation status of networks (representing antiepileptic effects). The simulations show that synchronisation evolves into desynchronisation in the HH neural networks when a part (10%) of neurons are stimulated with a pulse current signal. The network desynchronisation appears to be sensitive to the stimulation parameters. For the case of the same stimulation intensity, weakly coupled networks reach desynchronisation more easily than strongly coupled networks. The network desynchronisation reduced by short-stimulation interval is more distinct than that of induced by long stimulation interval. We find that there exist the optimal stimulation interval and optimal stimulation intensity when the other stimulation parameters remain certain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The deviation effect of spinor mode from the single-mode for a spin-1 Bose gas of trapped atoms is studied beyond the mean field theory. Based on the effective Hamiltonian with nondegenerated level of the collective spin states, the splitting level of the system energy due to the deviation effect has been calculated. For the large condensates of 87Rb and 23Na with atom number N>105, the splitting fraction of the energy, arising from the magnetization exhibited by the trapped Bose gas, is found to have a typical order of (10-4~10-8), decreasing as N-2 for 87Rb and increasing as -N-2 for 23Na, respectively. Abstract In response to the climate goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, efficient electrochemical energy conversion devices are garnering increasing attention. However, the enhancement of electrochemical performance using noble metal electrocatalysts, along with cost reduction and electrode fabrication, remain significant challenges. Noble metal hybrid nanostructures, possessing multiple surface functionalities, lead to outstanding electrocatalytic performances and low‐cost potential. Strain effects can bolster the bonding strength between the noble metal layers and the substrate or core layers, while simultaneously affecting electrocatalytic performance through tuning the binding strength between catalytically active sites and reactants, including intermediates. This review encapsulates the research efforts directed towards improving the performance of noble metal electrocatalysts and provides an overview of the latest advancements in controlling the surface state of noble metals by incorporating a secondary component. We discuss systematic approaches to adjusting surface strain effects on noble metals, characterization techniques, and application case studies, while extracting key design indicators for readers to consider from a macroscopic perspective. Further, we outline the challenges encountered and current solutions when advancing noble metal catalysts from theoretical mechanisms to practical use. Finally, the perspectives on the future research of noble metal surface layer control techniques were also provided.

Rapid and simple detections of two kinds of prohibited fish drugs, crystal violet (CV) and malachite green (MG), were accomplished by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Based on the optimized Au/cicada wing, the detectable concentration of CV/MG can reach 10−7 M, and the linear logarithmic quantitative relationship curves between logI and logC allows for the determination of the unknown concentration of CV/MG solution. The detection of these two analytes in real environment was also achieved, demonstrating the application potential of SERS in the fast screening of the prohibited fish drugs, which is of great benefit for food safety and environmental monitoring. A surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor with a high-order absentee layer on the top of metallic film is proposed. The performance of the SPR sensor with NaCl, MgO, TiO2 or AlAs high-order absentee layer is analyzed theoretically. The results indicate that the sensitivity and the full width at half maximum of those SPR sensors decrease with the increasing of the order of absentee layer, but the variation of the figure of merit (FOM) depends on the refractive index of absentee layer. By improving the order of absentee layer with high-refractive-index, the FOM of the SPR sensor can be enhanced. The maximum value of FOM for the SPR sensor with high-order TiO2 (or AlAs) absentee layer is 1.059% (or 2.587%) higher than the one with one-order absentee layer. Effect of the particle number density on the dispersion properties of longitudinal and transverse lattice waves in a two-dimensional Yukawa charged-dust system is investigated using molecular dynamics simulation. The dispersion relations for the waves are obtained. It is found that the frequencies of both the longitudinal and transverse dust waves increase with the density and when the density is sufficiently high a cutoff region appears at the short wavelength. With the increase of the particle number density, the common frequency tends to increase, and the sound speed of the longitudinal wave also increases, but that of the transverse wave remains low. Using temporal and spectral methods, the effects of dispersion and filtering induced by Mo/Si multilayer mirrors reflection on incident attosecond pulses were studied. First, two temporal parameters, the pulse broadening factor, and the energy loss factor, were defined to evaluate the effects of dispersion and filtering. Then, by analyzing these temporal parameters, we investigated and compared the dispersion and filtering effects on attosecond pulses. In addition, we explored the origins of pulse broadening and energy loss by analyzing the spectral and temporal characteristics of periodic Mo/Si multilayer mirrors. The results indicate that the filtering effect induced by Mo/Si multilayer mirrors reflection is the dominant reason for pulse broadening and energy loss. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Early-stage oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients have a one-in-four risk of regional metastasis (LN+), which is also the most significant prognostic factor for survival. As there are no validated biomarkers for predicting LN+ in early-stage OSCC, elective neck dissection often leads to over-treatment and under-treatment. We present a machine-learning-based model using the quantitative nuclear phenotype of cancer cells from the primary tumor to predict the risk of nodal disease. Methods and findings Tumor specimens were obtained from 35 patients diagnosed with primary OSCC and received surgery with curative intent. Of the 35 patients, 29 had well (G1) or moderately (G2) differentiated tumors, and six had poorly differentiated tumors. From each, two consecutive sections were stained for hematoxylin & eosin and Feulgen-thionin staining. The slides were scanned, and images were processed to curate nuclear morphometric features for each nucleus, measuring nuclear morphology, DNA amount, and chromatin texture/organization. The nuclei (n = 384,041) from 15 G1 and 14 G2 tumors were randomly split into 80% training and 20% test set to build the predictive model by using Random Forest (RF) analysis which give each tumor cell a score, NRS. The area under ROC curve (AUC) was 99.6% and 90.7% for the training and test sets, respectively. At the cutoff score of 0.5 as the median NRS of each region of interest (n = 481), the AUC was 95.1%. We then developed a patient-level model based on the percentage of cells with an NRS ≥ 0.5. The prediction performance showed AUC of 97.7% among the 80% (n = 23 patient) training set and with the cutoff of 61% positive cells achieved 100% sensitivity and 91.7% specificity. When applying the 61% cutoff to the 20% test set patients, the model achieved 100% accuracy. Conclusions Our findings may have a clinical impact with an easy, accurate, and objective biomarker from routine pathology tissue, providing an unprecedented opportunity to improve neck management decisions in early-stage OSCC patients.

The occurrence of gas hydrate deposits in the Qinghai-Tibet plateau permafrost (QTPP) were confirmed during the Scientific Drilling Project of Gas Hydrate in Qilian Mountain permafrost (QMP) in 2008-2009. A total of four test wells were completed, and gas hydrate samples were obtained from the drilling wells of DK-1, DK-2, and DK-3. The objective of this study is the analysis of gas production potential from gas hydrate-bearing zone of DK-2 using dual horizontal wells based on its geological properties at this site. In this paper, production strategies of permafrost hydrate deposits with the novel Heat-Assisted Antigravity Drainage (HAAD) method are investigated numerically. Gas production is induced in a two-well system and its influence factors are evaluated. When suitable heat injection rate and depressurization driving force are applied to the lower well and the upper well, respectively, favorable gas-to-water ratio and energy ratio can be obtained during the whole HAAD process. However, the absolute gas production rate may not be economically attractive for the production method we have employed. The sensitivity analysis indicates that the hydrate deposits with higher intrinsic permeability and larger rock porosity will show better perspective for hydrate exploitation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microplastic pollution is not only an environmental problem but also a social problem. Many studies have been conducted on the sources, abundance, and distribution of microplastics in the environment, but an understanding of human exposure levels and potential health risks remains very limited. Based on the bibliometric methods, the present review systematically summarized the exposure pathways of microplastics in humans, and then the characteristics and potential adverse impacts on human health were expounded upon. Available literature showed that microplastics in human bodies were mainly concentrated on sizes smaller than 50 μm, and polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were the main polymers. Microplastics in environments entered human bodies mainly through food and respiratory pathways, then accumulated in lung and gastrointestinal tissues. Most importantly, small-sized microplastics could distribute in tissues and organs via the circulatory system. The results from lab-based toxicological experiments showed that microplastics not only posed threats to cell membrane integrity, immune stress, gut microbiota, and energy metabolism but also had potentially adverse impacts on the reproductive system. To further understand the health risks of microplastic pollution, it is necessary to promote research on the toxicological effects of microplastics as well as the inner mechanisms and also to establish risk assessment frameworks for evaluating microplastic pollution. These works are crucial to preventing the risks of microplastic pollution with scientific evidence.
