Abstract Recent years have witnessed an increasing number of manipulated online reviews in e-commerce platforms. Previous research has provided substantial evidence that vendor manipulation of online reviews has a significant negative impact on the stakeholders involved in the e-commerce business. Many platforms take various governance measures to filter manipulated reviews. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of these measures still remains unknown to a large extent. To bridge this research gap, this paper investigates the effect of differentiated platform governance, including defined as interventions to counterattack manipulation intensity, manipulation duration, and perceived quality manipulated, on the probability of future review manipulation. We develop a game theoretical model that incorporates the strategic interactions between the platform and vendors, which yield several testable hypotheses. We then conduct an empirical analysis of platform governance and review manipulation by using the review manipulation data collected from Amazon.com. Results of the analytical model and empirical analysis show that platform governance that targets manipulation intensity and manipulation duration can both effectively mitigate review manipulation probability. On the contrary, platform governance to counterattack manipulating perceived product quality exhibits an inverted U-shape relationship with review manipulation probability. This study provides novel insights into how to better mitigate online review manipulation for e-commerce platforms.

Abstract While many organizations have successfully leveraged big data analytics capabilities to improve their performance, our understanding is limited on whether and how big data analytics capabilities affect social innovation in organizations. Based on the organizational information processing theory and the organizational learning theory, this study aims to investigate how big data analytics capabilities support social innovation, and how knowledge ambidexterity mediates this relationship. A total of 354 high-tech companies in China, this study shows that big data analytics management, big data analytics technology, and big data analytics personnel capabilities all have positive effects on social innovation. In addition, both knowledge exploration and knowledge exploitation play a mediating role in this process. Furthermore, a polynomial regression and response surface analysis shows that social innovation increases when knowledge exploration and knowledge exploitation are highly consistent but declines when knowledge exploration and knowledge exploitation are inconsistent. This study not only provides new perspectives for understanding how big data analytics capabilities contribute to social innovation, complementing the existing literature on big data analytics capabilities and social innovation, but also provides important practical guidance on how organizations can develop big data analytics capabilities to improve social innovation and solve social problems in the digital age.

Objective: To evaluate high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) features of dermatomyositis-/polymyositis- associated interstitial lung disease (DM/PM-ILD). Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the HRCT images of 148 patients with DM/PM-ILD at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University between Jan. 1, 2014, and Dec. 31, 2019. Results: The HRCT features of DM/PM-ILD were characterized by ground-glass opacities (GGO) (87.2%, 123/141), interlobular septal thickening (78.0%, 110/141), intralobular interstitial thickening (63.8%, 90/141), consolidation (29.1%, 41/141), subpleural lines (26.2%, 37/141), traction bronchiectasis (19.9%, 28/141), and honeycombing (3.5%, 5/141). Pneumomediastinum (3), pleural effusion (15), and pericardial effusion (18) were also observed. The two main radiological patterns were non-specific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP) and organism pneumonia (OP). Conclusion: HRCT features of DM/PM-ILD are heterogeneous, with various radiological patterns. Mastering the main characteristics of HRCT manifestation and the radiological patterns of DM/PM-ILD will be helpful for early identification and timely treatment.

Abstract With the rapid development of e-commerce, online reviews have become an important information source for consumers and e-commerce businesses. While the negative impact of deceptive online reviews has been well recognized, more research has to be done to help understand the linguistic manifestations of deceptive online reviews in order to help identify deceptive reviews and help increase the value and sustainability of e-commerce businesses. This study explores the linguistic manifestations of deceptive online reviews based on the reality monitoring theory, and then uses the data from Amazon.com online product reviews to examine perceptual cues, affective cues, detail cues, relevance cues, and cognitive cues of various deceptive online reviews. The results show that reviews for emotional catharsis are more extreme with affective cues, while perfunctory reviews often lack details with fewer prepositions and adjectives. In addition, deceptive reviews often lack relevance cues when these reviews are made to obtain the rewards provided by the vendors while paid posters tend to use more cognitive cues in deceptive reviews. Moreover, deceptive online reviews under all motives often lack perceptual cues. These findings provide a deeper understanding of the linguistic manifestations of deceptive online reviews and provide significant managerial implications for e-commerce businesses to employ high-quality online reviews for sustainable growth.

Introduction: The large aperture concave spherical focused ultrasonic transducer has stronger acoustic focusing effect and can obtain good temperature rise effect. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of different frequency, duty cycle and inner radius parameters on temperature rise of multi-layer biological tissue. Material and Methods: The simulation model of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) irradiated multi-layer biological tissue was constructed. By changing the irradiation frequency, duty cycle and inner radius of large aperture concave spherical focused ultrasonic transducer, the sound field and temperature field of multi-layer biological tissue were simulated and calculated by using Westervelt nonlinear acoustic wave equation and Pennes biological heat conduction equation, respectively. Results: The intensity of sound field increased with the increase of frequency, while it decreased with the increase of inner radius, but the duty cycle almost had no effect on the intensity of sound field. The focal temperature increased with the increase of frequency and duty cycle, but decreased with the increase of inner radius. Conclusion: By selecting appropriate parameters of transducer, the optimum temperature rise in the target area of biological tissue can be obtained by using a large aperture concave spherical focused ultrasonic transducer.

Livestream shopping has attracted great attention in an increasingly digitalized society. This study is to explore the mechanism through which social presence and physical presence affect consumer purchase intentions in livestream shopping as an emerging e-commerce model. Based on the flow theory, this study proposes an integrated model to explain the mechanism through which the feeling of presence affects consumers’ purchase intentions in livestream shopping. Empirical data on livestream shopping were collected in China to test the proposed model for an exploratory study. The results show that the feeling of physical presence influences consumers’ purchase intentions through concentration and perceived control, and the feeling of social presence influences consumers’ purchase intentions through concentration and enjoyment, and, thus, both social presence and physical presence are important elements in livestream shopping. This study provides a better understanding on the mechanism of how the feeling of presence helps improve purchase intentions in livestream shopping. This study shows both physical presence and social presence are positively related to consumers’ purchase intention, but with different paths, and, thus, sheds new lights on the feeling of presence and its impact on consumer behaviors in e-commerce.

Introduction: High-intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) treatment is a non-invasive technology. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of different treatment depths, tissue types and treatment interval on biological tissue thermal lesions under continuous and intermittent treatment modes.Material and Methods: A simulation model of biological tissue irradiated by HIFU was established by finite difference time domain (FDTD). The thermal lesion of biological tissue irradiated by HIFU was calculated using the spherical beam equation (SBE) and Pennes biological heat transfer equation (PBHTE). Parameters such as treatment depth, tissue type, and treatment interval were varied to explore their effects on the thermal lesion to biological tissues in both continuous and intermittent treatment modes.Results: For the same biological tissue or treatment depth, with the increase of HIFU irradiation time, the focal temperature under continuous treatment was higher than that under intermittent treatment, and the thermal lesion area under continuous treatment was greater than that under intermittent treatment. Whether continuous or intermittent treatment, with the increase of treatment depth, the temperature rise rate of deep tissue was slower than that of superficial tissue, and the thermal lesion area decreased gradually. Moreover, in the intermittent treatment mode with a long single treatment time and short treatment interval, the focal temperature rase quickly and the thermal lesion area was large.Conclusion: For the same tissue type, treatment depth, or any treatment interval, the focal temperature and thermal lesion area corresponding to continuous treatment were greater than those corresponding to intermittent treatment.

There is accumulating evidence showing that apoptosis induced by endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress plays a key role in pancreatic β cell dysfunction and insulin resistance. 3β-Hydroxysteroid-Δ24 Reductase (DHCR24) is a multifunctional enzyme located in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), which has been previously shown to protect neuronal cells from ER stress-induced apoptosis. However, the role of DHCR24 in type 2 diabetes is only incompletely understood so far. In the present study, we induced ER stress by tunicamycin (TM) treatment and showed that infection of MIN6 cells with Ad-DHCR24-myc rendered these cells resistant to caspase-3-mediated apoptosis induced by TM, while cells transfected with siRNAs targeting DHCR24 were more sensitive to TM. Western blot analysis showed that TM treatment induced upregulation of Bip protein levels in both cells infected with Ad-LacZ (the control group) and Ad-DHCR24-myc, indicating substantial ER stress. Cells infected with Ad-LacZ exhibited a rapid and strong activation of ATF6 and p38, peaking at 3 h after TM exposure. Conversely, cells infected with Ad-DHCR24-myc showed a higher and more sustained activation of ATF6 and Bip than control cells. DHCR24 overexpression also inhibited the generation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by ER stress and protected cells from apoptosis caused by treatment with both cholesterol and hydrogen peroxide. In summary, these data demonstrate, for the first time, that DHCR24 protects pancreatic β cells from apoptosis induced by ER stress.

The precise mechanism for the sustained antidepressant action of ketamine is unclear. This study shows ketamine can promote neuronal differentiation via TrkB-ERK activation in mice and the sustained behavioral effect is attenuated when adult neurogenesis is blocked, but extended when it is enhanced.

The mechanisms that activate some genes while silencing others are critical to ensure precision in lineage specification as multipotent progenitors become restricted in cell fate. During neurodevelopment, these mechanisms are required to generate the diversity of neuronal subtypes found in the nervous system. Here we report interactions between basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcriptional activators and the transcriptional repressor PRDM13 that are critical for specifying dorsal spinal cord neurons. PRDM13 inhibits gene expression programs for excitatory neuronal lineages in the dorsal neural tube. Strikingly, PRDM13 also ensures a battery of ventral neural tube specification genes such as Olig1, Olig2 and Prdm12 are excluded dorsally. PRDM13 does this via recruitment to chromatin by multiple neural bHLH factors to restrict gene expression in specific neuronal lineages. Together these findings highlight the function of PRDM13 in repressing the activity of bHLH transcriptional activators that together are required to achieve precise neuronal specification during mouse development.

Adult neurogenesis persists in the rodent dentate gyrus and is stimulated by chronic treatment with conventional antidepressants through BDNF/TrkB signaling. Ketamine in low doses produces both rapid and sustained antidepressant effects in patients. Previous studies have shed light on post-transcriptional synaptic NMDAR mediated mechanisms underlying the acute effect, but how ketamine acts at the cellular level to sustain this anti-depressive function for prolonged periods remains unclear. Here we report that ketamine accelerates differentiation of doublecortin-positive adult hippocampal neural progenitors into functionally mature neurons. This process requires TrkB-dependent ERK pathway activation. Genetic ablation of TrkB in neural stem/progenitor cells, or pharmacologic disruption of ERK signaling, or inhibition of adult neurogenesis, each blocks the ketamine-induced behavioral responses. Conversely, enhanced ERK activity via Nf1 gene deletion extends the response and rescues both neurogenic and behavioral deficits in mice lacking TrkB. Thus, TrkB-dependent neuronal differentiation is involved in the sustained antidepressant effects of ketamine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studies on large double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) viruses such as poxviruses have been helpful in identifying a number of viral and cellular growth factors that contribute to our broad understanding of virus-host interaction. Orthopoxviruses and leporipoxviruses are among the most studied viruses in this aspect. However, tanapoxvirus (TPV), a member of the genus Yatapoxvirus, still remains largely unexplored, as the only known hosts for this virus are humans and monkeys. Here, we describe the initial characterization of an epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like growth factor mimicking human neuregulin from TPV, expressed by the TPV-15L gene. Assays using a baculovirus-expressed and tagged TPV-15L protein demonstrated the ability to phosphorylate neuregulin receptors. Neuregulins represent a large family of EGF-like growth factors that play important roles in embryonic endocardium development, Schwann and oligodendrocyte survival and differentiation, localized acetylcholine receptor expression at the neuromuscular junction, and epithelial morphogenesis. Interestingly, certain neuregulin molecules are able to target specific tissues through interactions with heparin sulfate proteoglycans via an immunoglobulin (Ig)-like domain. Analyses of TPV-15L revealed no Ig-like domain, but it retains the ability to bind heparin and phosphorylate neuregulin receptors, providing compelling evidence that TPV-15L is a functional mimetic of neuregulin. TPV-15L knockout virus experiments demonstrate that the virus replicates in human umbilical vein endothelial cells less efficiently than wild-type TPV-Kenya, indicating that this is a nonessential protein for virus viability but can serve a stimulatory role for replication in some cultured cells. During peripheral nervous system development, successful communication between axons and Schwann cells is required for proper function of both myelinated and nonmyelinated nerve fibers. Alternatively spliced proteins belonging to the neuregulin1 (NRG1) gene family of growth and differentiation factors are essential for Schwann cell survival and peripheral nerve development. Although recent studies have strongly implicated membrane-bound NRG1 forms (type III) in the myelination at late stages, little is known about the role of soluble, heparin-binding forms of NRG1 (type I/II) in regulating early Schwann cell development in vivo. These forms are rapidly released from axons in vitro by Schwann-cell-secreted neurotrophic factors and, unlike membrane-bound forms, have a unique ability to diffuse and adhere to heparan sulfate-rich cell surfaces. Here, we show that axon-derived soluble NRG1 translocates from axonal to Schwann cell surfaces in the embryonic chick between days 5 and 7, corresponding to the critical period of Schwann cell survival. Downregulating endogenous type I/II NRG1 signaling either with a targeted NRG1 antagonist or by shRNA blocks their differentiation from precursors into immature Schwann cells and increases programmed cell death, whereas upregulating NRG1 rescues Schwann cells. Exogenous BDNF also promotes Schwann cell survival through promoting the local release of axonal NRG1. Consistently, increased Schwann cell death occurs both in trkB knock-out mice and after knocking down axonal trkB in chick embryos, which can then be rescued with soluble NRG1. These findings suggest a localized, axoglial feedback loop through soluble NRG1 and BDNF critical for early Schwann cell survival and differentiation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of assertiveness in determining negotiation outcomes in two different cultures and thus to help understand the cultural differences in the relationship between assertiveness and negotiation outcomes in the West and East, where assertiveness is often viewed quite differently. Design/methodology/approach - Data were collected from four simulated negotiations of varying degrees of complexity ranging from the most distributive to the most integrative. Over 400 business students were recruited as subjects from a Western culture and an Eastern culture, namely Canada and China, to participate in the simulations in order to test the cultural differences in the relationship between assertiveness and negotiation outcomes. Findings - The results provide support for the effects of assertiveness on both economic outcome and affective outcome, and thus confirm the importance of assertiveness as a negotiator trait; the relationship between assertiveness and negotiation outcomes is found to be culture dependent whereby assertiveness is associated with economic outcome and affective outcome for Canadians, but only with affective outcome for the Chinese. Practical implications - This study provides important guidelines for negotiation practitioners. Relevant training and development programs could be designed for international managers to improve their effectiveness when they negotiate with the Chinese who often place more emphasis on affective outcome and on negotiation process. Originality/value - Negotiation skills become more important in the increasingly globalized world market and research on negotiation needs to provide more knowledge for scholars and negotiation practitioners. A key component in the response of the nervous system to injury is the proliferation and switch to a "proinflammatory" phenotype by microglia (microgliosis). In situations where the blood- brain barrier is intact, microglial numbers increase via the proliferation and chemotaxis of resident microglia; however, there is limited knowledge regarding the factors mediating this response. After peripheral nerve injury, a dorsal horn microgliosis develops, which directly contributes to the development of neuropathic pain. Neuregulin-1 (NRG-1) is a growth and differentiation factor with a well characterized role in neural and cardiac development. Microglia express the NRG1 receptors erbB2, 3, and 4, and NRG1 signaling via the erbB2 receptor stimulated microglial proliferation, chemotaxis, and survival, as well as interleukin-1β release in vitro. Intrathecal treatment with NRG1 resulted in microglial proliferation within the dorsal horn, and these cells developed an activated morphology. This microglial response was associated with the development of both mechanical and cold pain-related hypersensitivity. Primary afferents express NRG1, and after spinal nerve ligation (SNL) we observed both an increase in NRG1 within the dorsal horn as well as activation of erbB2 specifically within microglia. Blockade of the erbB2 receptor or sequestration of endogenous NRG after SNL reduced the proliferation, the number of microglia with an activated morphology, and the expression of phospho-P38 by microglia. Furthermore, consequent to such changes, the mechanical pain-related hypersensitivity and cold allodynia were reduced. A major limitation in biopharmaceutical development is selectively targeting drugs to diseased tissues. Growth factors and viruses have solved this problem by targeting tissue-specific cell-surface heparan sulfates. Neuregulin (NRG), a growth factor important in both nervous system development and cancer, has a unique heparin-binding domain (HBD) that targets to cell surfaces expressing its HER2/3/4 receptors (Esper, R. M., Pankonin, M. S., and Loeb, J. A. (2006) Brain Res. Rev. 51, 161-175). We have harnessed this natural targeting ability of NRG by fusing the HBD of NRG to soluble HER4. This fusion protein retains high affinity heparin binding to heparin and to cells that express heparan sulfates resulting in a more potent NRG antagonist. In vivo, it is targeted to peripheral nerve segments where it blocks the activity of NRG as a Schwann cell survival factor. The fusion protein also efficiently blocks autocrine and paracrine signaling and reduces the proliferation of MCF10CA1 breast cancer cells. These findings demonstrate the utility of the HBD of NRG in biopharmaceutical targeting and provide a new way to block HER signaling in cancer cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose — The purpose of this paper is to map the intellectual structure of conflict management studies and to investigate the key themes, concepts, and their relationships of conflict management literature in the past decade. Design/methodology/approach — Citation and co-citation analysis and social network analysis were used to trace the development path of conflict management research. The data were collected by searching the SSCI databases, based on 556 journal articles which were published between 1997 and 2006, and their cited references were analyzed and profiled. Findings — The paper shows that conflict management literature focuses on three key themes: workplace conflict and conflict management styles, cultural differences in conflict management, and conflict management in practice. In addition, research on group conflict and work performance has gained momentum in recent years. Originality/value — The intellectual structure of conflict management literature has received little attention in spite that a large number of studies have been done on conflict management. This paper will expose researchers to a new way of profiling key themes and their relationships in conflict management area, which will help academia and practitioners understand better contemporary conflict management studies. China has been one of the most important markets for western firms, but negotiating with the Chinese is quite a challenging task. Researchers have been investigating the distinctness in Chinese negotiation and conflict management styles, but have yet to provide solid evidence for it. An attempt is made in this study to illustrate how Chinese people approach conflicts, and thus how this affects their negotiation behaviours during business negotiation, which provides an empirical test of Chinese conflict management styles and their impact on negotiation outcomes. Results show that compromising and avoiding are the most preferred methods of conflict management in China, while accommodating and competing lead to more satisfaction during business negotiation. Background: Cancer screening with highly sensitive, specific biomarkers that reflect molecular phenotypic alterations is an attractive strategy for cancer control. We examined whether biomarker profiles could be used for risk assessment and cancer detection in a cohort of Chinese workers occupationally exposed to benzidine and at risk for bladder cancer.Methods: The cohort consisted of 1788 exposed and 373 nonexposed workers, followed from 1991 through 1997. We assayed urothelial cells from voided urine samples for DNA ploidy (expressed as the 5C-exceeding rate [DNA 5CER]), the bladder tumor-associated antigen p300, and a cytoskeletal protein (G-actin). Workers were stratified into different risk groups (high, moderate, and low risk) at each examination based on a predefined biomarker profile. For workers who developed bladder cancer, tumor risk assessment was analyzed from samples collected 6-12 months before the cancer diagnosis. The associations between risk group and subsequent development of bladder cancer were analyzed by Cox proportional hazards regression analysis and logistic analysis, after adjustment. All statistical tests were two-sided.Results: Twenty-eight bladder cancers were diagnosed in exposed workers and two in nonexposed workers. For risk assessment, DNA 5CER had 87.5% sensitivity, 86.5% specificity, an odds ratio (OR) of 46.2 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 8.1 to 867.0), and a risk ratio (RR) of 16.2 (95% CI = 7.1 to 37.0); p300 had 50.0% sensitivity, 97.9% specificity, an OR of 40.0 (95% CI = 9.0 to 177.8), and an RR of 37.9 (95% CI = 16.8 to 85.3). The risk of developing bladder cancer was 19.6 (95% CI = 8.0 to 47.9) times higher in workers positive for either the DNA 5CER or p300 biomarkers than in workers negative for both biomarkers and 81.4 (95% CI = 33.3 to 199.3) times higher in workers positive for both biomarkers. G-actin was a poor marker of individual risk.Conclusions: Occupationally exposed workers at risk for bladder cancer can be individually stratified, screened, monitored, and diagnosed based on predefined molecular biomarker profiles.
