Streams serve as open windows for carbon emissions to the atmosphere due to the frequent supersaturation of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) that originates from large carbon input during runoff and associated in-stream processes. Due to the high spatial and temporal variability of the underlying environmental drivers (e.g., concentrations of dissolved CO2 and CH4, turbulence, and temperature), it has remained difficult to address the importance and upscale the emissions to annual whole-system and regional values. In this study, we measured concentrations and calculated emissions of CO2 and CH4 at diel and seasonal scales at 15 stations in a 1.4 km2 stream network that drains a mixed lowland catchment consisting of agriculture (210 km2), forest (56 km2), and lakes, ponds, and wetlands (22 km2) in the upper River Odense, Denmark to evaluate environmental drivers behind the spatiotemporal variability. We used automatically venting floating chambers to calculate hourly diffusive fluxes of CO2 and CH4 and CH4 ebullition. We found: 1) highly supersaturated CO2 and CH4 concentrations (median: 175 and 0.33 µmol L−1, respectively) and high diffusive fluxes of CO2 and CH4 (median: 3,608 and 19 µmol m−2 h−1, respectively); 2) lower daytime than nighttime diffusive emissions of CO2 in spring and summer, but no diel variability of CH4; 3) higher concentrations and emissions of CH4 at higher temperatures; and 4) higher emissions of CH4 at stations located in sub-catchments with higher agricultural coverage. Ebullition of CH4 peaked at two stations with soft organic sediment and low summer flow, and their ebullition alone constituted 30% of total annual CH4 emissions from the stream network. Mean annual CO2 emissions from the hydrological network (37.15 mol CO2 m−2 y−1) exceeded CH4 emissions 100-fold (0.43 mol CH4 m−2 y−1), and their combined warming potential was 1.83 kg CO2e m−2 y−1. Overall, agricultural sub-catchments had higher CH4 emissions from streams, while lakes and ponds likely reduced downstream CH4 and CO2 emissions. Our findings demonstrate that CO2 and CH4 emissions data at high spatial and temporal resolution are essential to frame the heterogeneous stream conditions, understand gas emissions regulation, and upscale to annual values for hydrological networks and larger regions. Water hyacinth is able to sequester large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) in wetlands. At the same time, the high production of organic matter combined with the plant's capacity to limit the diffusion of oxygen from the atmosphere into the water creates favorable conditions for the production of methane (CH4). The combination of these mechanisms challenges the prediction of water hyacinth's net effects on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To unravel the impact of water hyacinth on GHG fluxes, we performed an extensive fieldwork study encompassing 22 sites dominated by water hyacinth in the Pantanal and Amazon during two different seasons. The highest CH4 emissions from water hyacinth beds occurred in shallow systems where sediment rooting enabled plant-mediated CH4 transport (307 ± 407 mg CH4 m−2 day−1 in waters shallower than 1 m, as opposed to 6.1 ± 10.6 mg CH4 m−2 day−1 in deeper waters). When CO2 uptake rates are added to the GHG budget (in terms of global warming potential), the water bodies were usually a GHG sink (− 5.2 ± 10 gCO2 eq m−2 day−1). The strength of the sink is highest in deeper systems where even a low water hyacinth coverage may already offset open water emissions. This dual effect of strong CO2 uptake—and at least temporal carbon storage in biomass—in combination with a high CO2–to-biomass-to-CH4 (and possibly back to CO2) conversion highlights the necessity to include vegetation characteristics in relation to depth when estimating GHG fluxes for tropical wetlands. Greenhouse gases increased in concentrations over pre-industrial values by 257% for methane and 145% for carbon dioxide in 2016. Such increased levels are the main climate change drivers and may affect aquatic systems that accumulate and carry carbon to the ocean and the atmosphere. Additionally, these systems are sensitive to environmental changes since their physical, chemical and biological properties respond rapidly to changes. Therefore, this study focus on the greenhouse gases dynamic over an urban eutrophic tropical lagoon. Samplings were performed in the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon by covering four periods in 2016 (April, June, October and December). Mean diffusive flux was -1,466.8 mg m-2 d-1 of carbon dioxide and 113.7 mg m-2 d-1 of methane. Regarding the bubbling, fluxes were 58.28 mg m-2 d-1 for methane and negligible for carbon dioxide (mean value of 5.01 mg m-2 d-1). Environmental parameters such as depth, water temperature and sediment particle size were strongly related to the fluxes. In conclusion, the region is a sink of carbon dioxide and a source of methane to the atmosphere. Additionally, the rivers discharge impacts the lagoon by generating a methane hotspot emission region. Gas ebullition of river impoundments plays an increasingly significant role, particularly in transporting methane CH4 from their sediments to the atmosphere, and contributing to the global carbon budget and global warming. Quantifying stochastic and episodic nature of gas ebullition is complicated especially when conventionally conducted by using coverage-limited gas traps. Current knowledge of seasonality in a reservoir's gas ebullition is lacking in the literature. For this reason, advanced acoustic surveying was intensively applied to determine spatiotemporal distributions of gas ebullition in a European water-storage reservoir for two years. Additionally, the sampling was accompanied with gas collecting for analyzing gas composition. The gas released from the reservoir was primarily composed of CH4 (on average 52%, up to 94%). The longitudinal distribution of gas ebullition was mainly determined by a proximity to the river inflow as a source of organic matter. A magnitude of ebullitive fluxes within the reservoir varied up to 1,300 mL m−2 d−1 (30 mmol CH4 m−2 d−1). The most significant period of ebullition has turned out to be in fall, on average reaching a sevenfold ebullitive flux (70 mL m−2 d−1, 1.6 mmol CH4 m−2 d−1) higher than in the rest of the season. A substantial contribution to the fall peak was induced by an expansion of gas ebullition into greater depths, covering two thirds of the reservoir in late fall. In 2016, Brazil emitted 18.25 Tg of methane. Some of these emissions occur through continental aquatic ecosystems, locations of fate and accumulation of organic and inorganic matter. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate the origin of organic matter in Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, an eutrophic, coastal and chocked lagoon in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, through the determination of n-alkanes and sterols compounds in the upper two centimeters of sediment and compare these data with methane ebullitive flux. The concentrations of n-alkanes varied between 2.43 and 25.82 µg g-1. C29 was predominant compound in most sites, but also with important petrogenic source evidenced by the occurrence of Unresolved Complex Misture. The total concentration of sterols ranged from 2.76 to 56.01 µg g-1. β-sitostanol was the most abundant compound and coprostanol was the most relevant at the sites under influence of domestic effluents. CH4 ebullitive flux averaged 199 mg m-2 d-1 in the dry period and 9.3 mg m-2 d-1 during the wet season. We conclude that the organic matter reaching Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon through the rivers discharge added or enriched with irregular sewage input and petroleum derivates are the main source of eutrophication and generate higher methane emissions to the atmosphere.
