The influence of light spectral properties on circadian rhythms is of substantial interest to laboratory-based investigation of the circadian system and to field-based understanding of the effects of artificial light at night. The trade-offs between intensity and spectrum regarding masking behaviors are largely unknown, even for well-studied organisms. We used a custom LED illumination system to document the response of wild-type house mice (Mus musculus) to 1-h nocturnal exposure of all combinations of four intensity levels (0.01, 0.5, 5 and 50 lx) and three correlated color temperatures (CCT; 1750, 1950 and 3000 K). Higher intensities of light (50 lx) suppressed cage activity substantially, and consistently more for the higher CCT light (91% for 3000 K, 53% for 1750 K). At the lowest intensity (0.01 lx), mean activity was increased, with the greatest increases for the lowest CCT (12.3% increase at 1750 K, 3% increase at 3000 K). Multiple linear regression confirmed the influence of both CCT and intensity on changes in activity, with the scaled effect size of intensity 3.6 times greater than that of CCT. Activity suppression was significantly lower for male than for female mice. Assessment of light-evoked cFos expression in the suprachiasmatic nucleus at 50 lx showed no significant difference between high and low CCT exposure. The significant differences by spectral composition illustrate a need to account for light spectrum in circadian studies of behavior, and confirm that spectral controls can mitigate some, but certainly not all, of the effects of light pollution on species in the wild.

In this study we identify a process of "entrainment" around open source software (OSS) development release cycles to capture patterns of self-organized task allocation among developers. We conducted an abductive, computationally intensive study of eight OSS projects, using relational event modeling to analyze 1,169,489 actions covering 93 major software releases. The process of entrainment that we identify involves three task allocation mechanisms: (1) developer-issue inertia, (2) developer contribution frequency, and (3) issue popularity. Our analysis demonstrates that these mechanisms and the phases of the release cycle entrain each other. Before a major release, developers engage in a concentrated mobilization phase, whereby they democratize development activity and increasingly allocate community contributions to the set of issues related to the release. After a major release, the extended cleanup phase garners a greater share of development work from recently highly active developers and dilutes the activity of these developers across a wider range of issues. Our theorizing suggests that major releases constitute important events around which OSS communities self-organize and we characterize how this occurs. Our research contributes to theorizing on organizing in OSS communities by explaining how self-organizing task allocation interacts with release cycles through the mechanism of entrainment. Purpose: Transmeridian travel is common for elite athletes participating in competitions and training. However, this travel can lead to circadian misalignment wherein the internal biological clock becomes desynchronized with the light–dark cycle of the new environment, resulting in performance decrement and potential negative health consequences. Existing literature extensively discusses recommendations for managing jet lag, predominantly emphasizing light-based interventions to synchronize the internal clock with the anticipated time at the destination. Nevertheless, visually impaired (VI) athletes may lack photoreceptiveness, diminishing or nullifying the effectiveness of this therapy. Consequently, this invited commentary explores alternative strategies for addressing jet lag in VI athletes. Conclusions: VI athletes with light perception but reduced visual acuity or visual fields may still benefit from light interventions in managing jet lag. However, VI athletes lacking a conscious perception of light should rely on gradual shifts in behavioral factors, such as meal timing and exercise, to facilitate the entrainment of circadian rhythms to the destination time. Furthermore, interventions like melatonin supplementation may prove useful during and after travel. In addition, it is recommended that athlete guides adopt phase-forward or phase-back approaches to synchronize with the athlete, aiding in jet-lag management and optimizing performance. Entrainment of subsaturated air into a cloud can influence its optical and microphysical properties in various ways, depending on the droplet evaporation and turbulent mixing time scales. Previous experiments in the Pi convection-cloud chamber have revealed that, given a fixed entrained air property, the mixing of entrained subsaturated air results in complete evaporation of some cloud droplets, with the rest remaining unchanged. This is a signature of inhomogeneous mixing. While comparing the results of entrainment with varying air properties, the mixing signature appears as if the subsaturated air is well mixed with the cloud to evenly reduce the droplets' size. In other words, taken together, the experiments appear to have the signature of homogeneous mixing. To explore these results in a greater depth, we conduct large-eddy simulations combined with a bin microphysics scheme. Our results reproduce the similar signatures of inhomogeneous and homogeneous mixing, implying that LES can resolve the inhomogeneous mixing when the grid spacing is smaller than the entrained air parcel. Additionally, we observe that increasing the aerosol injection rate enhances the signature of inhomogeneous mixing, while coarser grid spacing diminishes it. Finally, the change in wall fluxes in response to various entrained air properties confirms that the homogeneous signature seen in the analysis of an ensemble of simulations is the result of various equilibrium states. This further strengthens the suggestion that the homogeneous mixing signature found in aircraft observations near the cloud top may result from combining entrainment events of different intensities, possibly caused by various-sized eddies. Significance Statement: Large-eddy simulation and size-resolved microphysics can resolve time scales for turbulent mixing and evaporation and, therefore, are well suited for reproducing, extending, and interpreting the entrainment experiment in the Pi convection-cloud chamber. Our simulation results confirm (i) the inhomogeneous mixing signature for an individual entrainment event and (ii) the appearance of homogeneous mixing in an ensemble of entrainment episodes. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the inhomogeneous mixing signature is more pronounced in a polluted cloud, but coarser grid spacing in simulations may compromise the accuracy of this signature. Last, the homogeneous mixing signature results from various equilibrium states established for different entrainment intensities and adjusted wall fluxes, which are challenging to measure experimentally but can be easily analyzed in the simulations. This study investigates countercurrent air-water two-phase flow in vertical pipes with inner diameters of 26 mm and 44 mm and a height of 2000 mm, under controlled conditions to eliminate heat and mass transfer. Cutting-edge techniques were employed to measure the liquid film thickness (δ) and entrainment (e) within the annular flow pattern. The methodology involved a systematic comparative analysis of experimental results against established models, identifying the most accurate methods for predicting flow behavior. Specifically, the Schubring et al. correlation was found to most accurately predict e in 26 mm pipes, while the Wallis correlation was more accurate for 44 mm pipes. Additionally, interfacial shear stress was analyzed, confirming the high precision of the δ and e parameters. This research enhances the understanding of countercurrent air-water two-phase flow by providing reliable estimation methods for different pipe diameters and emphasizes the significance of accurately determining interfacial shear stress. A simple analytical model, the zero‐buoyancy plume (ZBP) model, has been proposed to understand how small‐scale processes such as plume‐environment mixing and evaporation affect the steady‐state structure of the atmosphere. In this study, we refine the ZBP model to achieve self‐consistent analytical solutions for convective mass flux, addressing the inconsistencies in previous solutions. Our refined ZBP model reveals that increasing plume‐environment mixing can increase upper‐troposphere mass flux through two pathways: increased cloud evaporation or reduced atmospheric stability. To validate these findings, we conducted small‐domain convection‐permitting Radiative‐Convective Equilibrium simulations with horizontal resolutions ranging from 4 km to 125 m. As a proxy for plume‐environment mixing strength, the diagnosed entrainment rate increases with finer resolution. Consistent with a previous study, we observed that both anvil cloud fraction and upper‐troposphere mass flux increase with higher resolution. Analysis of the clear‐sky energy balance in the simulations with two different microphysics schemes identified both pathways proposed by the ZBP model. The dominant pathway depends on the relative strengths of evaporation cooling and radiative cooling in the environment. Our work provides a refined simple framework for understanding the interaction between small‐scale convective processes and large‐scale atmospheric structure. Our study investigates how small‐scale mixing affects anvil clouds and vertical air movement in the upper atmosphere. Our results show that stronger mixing increases the amount of air moving upward, either through increased cloud evaporation or reduced atmospheric stability. We confirmed these findings with km‐scale numerical simulations at various grid sizes. Introduction: Typical atrial flutter (AFL) is a macroreentrant tachycardia in which intracardiac conduction rotates counterclockwise around the tricuspid annulus. Typical AFL has specific electrocardiographic characteristics, including a negative sawtooth‐like wave in the inferior lead and a positive F wave in lead V1. This study aimed to analyze the origin of the positive F wave in lead V1, which has not been completely understood. Methods: This study enrolled 10 patients who underwent radiofrequency catheter ablation for a typical AFL. Electroanatomical mapping was performed both during typical AFL and entrainment from the right atrial appendage (RAA). The 12‐lead electrocardiogram (ECG) and three‐dimensional (3D) electroanatomical maps were analyzed. Results: The positive F wave in lead V1 changed during entrainment from the RAA in all the cases. The 3D map during entrainment from the RAA revealed an area of antidromic capture around the RAA, which collided with the orthodromic wave in the anterior right atrium. This area of antidromic capture around the RAA was the only difference from the 3D electroanatomical map of AFL and is considered the cause of the change in the F wave in lead V1 during entrainment. Conclusion: The analysis of the differences in the 12‐lead ECG and 3D maps between tachycardia and entrainment from the RAA clearly demonstrated that activation around the RAA is responsible for the generation of the positive F wave in lead V1 of typical AFL. AbstractIn this study, an experimental investigation of the hydrodynamics of a novel 3-dimensional centrifugal tray was carried out. Using a high-capacity cylindrical centrifugal tray (HCC centrifugal tray), the centrifugal force and, inertial separation technologies were applied to remove the capacity limitations caused by the gravitational constraints. An air-water system was used in a rectangular cross-section plexiglass tower (30 cm × 50 cm). The pressure drop (dry and total), weeping, entrainment and clear liquid height of the tray were measured, and finally, a comparison to ConCap, sieve and, valve trays was provided. The results revealed a positive hydrodynamic behavior of the tray, particularly when a high gas velocity was used. Also, the capacity and operating window of the tray were found to be markedly larger than those of the conventional trays. This novel HCC centrifugal tray offers a promising approach to retrofit and debottleneck the tray columns in industrial applications, since it is both practical and inexpensive. The article highlights recent research on the molecular and metabolic regulation of quiescence, as well as the ecological modeling and molecular perception of temperature in relation to dormancy. The integration of hormone and cell-to-cell signaling, as well as the role of epigenetic mechanisms in establishing and maintaining dormancy, is also explored. The first monograph on the European hamster from the Strasbourg region dates back to 1765. By the 1930s, a long and continuous chronobiological research tradition was established for this species, starting with the works of Charles Kayser, who published between 1938 and 1971. Another early key researcher in this area was Bernhard Canguilhem with publications from 1966 to 1999. From the 1980s onwards, "the Pévets," Paul Pévet and his wife, Mireille Masson‐Pévet, gave new energy to European hamster research. They broadened the research scope from basic hibernation research to mechanistic studies of circannual rhythms and from physiological aspects to molecular details. One main underlying question in their research was the role of melatonin. Thanks to their enthusiasm and vision, the European hamster is today one of the best – if not the best – studied circannual species. At least 73 parameters are described to cycle. Thirty‐two of them have been shown to be driven by a circannual clock. Moreover, ground‐breaking advances in our understanding of the mechanistic of hibernation, circannual clock functioning, and its entrainment were made. With most of this research being conducted in Strasbourg, Paul Pévet was instrumental in providing the necessary resources that made these innovative and unconventional long‐term animal studies possible, contributing to fundamental research and, ultimately, to species conservation. Compound channels are a common hydraulic section of many alluvial and fluvial systems, serving as conduits for the flow of water and sediment. The proper design of these structures requires an understanding of the entrainment and mixing mechanisms in them. This paper presents a three-dimensional numerical study of lock-exchange flow in a compound channel covering the Reynolds numbers (Re) range of 17 000–39 000. This study investigates flow structures and mixing patterns for various geometries and flow characteristics. The results show that the entrainment coefficient decreases as the dense flow progresses, and the amplitude of instantaneous mixing fluctuations decreases with an increase in the width of the floodplain and reduced gravity. The averaged flux entrainment profiles show a minimum at Re = 2 7 0 0 0 at different times in the front area. In the head area also, a downward concavity can be seen in the profiles around Re = 2 7 0 0 0. This study also reveals that changes in floodplain height do not affect the establishment of lobe-and-cleft instability. The wider the floodplain channel, the larger the lobe-and-cleft instability created. Small-scale mixing dominates at high Reynolds numbers, leading to higher fluid mixing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Essential tremor (ET) is a common debilitating condition, yet current treatments often fail to provide satisfactory relief. Transcutaneous spinal cord electrical stimulation (tSCS) has emerged as a potential noninvasive neuromodulation technique capable of disrupting the oscillatory activity underlying tremors. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the potential of tSCS to disrupt tremor in a frequency‐dependent manner in a cohort of patients with ET. Methods: Eighteen patients with ET completed the study. The experiment consisted of 60‐s postural tremor recording, during tSCS at tremor frequency, at 1 Hz, at 21 Hz, no stimulation, and trapezius stimulation. Tremor frequency and amplitude were analyzed and compared across the conditions. Results: We found tremor amplitude reduction at tremor frequency stimulation significant only during the second half of the stimulation. The same stimulation resulted in the highest number of responders. tSCS at 1 Hz showed a trend toward decreased tremor amplitude in the latter half of stimulation. tSCS at 21 Hz did not produce any significant alterations in tremor, whereas trapezius stimulation exacerbated it. Notably, during tremor frequency stimulation, a subgroup of responders exhibited consistent synchronization between tremor phase and delivered stimulation, indicating tremor entrainment. Conclusions: Cervical tSCS holds promise for alleviating postural tremor in patients with ET when delivered at the subject's tremor frequency. The observed changes in tremor amplitude likely result from the modulation of spinal cord circuits by tSCS, which disrupts the oscillatory drive to muscles by affecting afferent pathways or spinal reflexes. The regulation of the mammalian circadian clock is largely dependent on heredity. In model animals for circadian rhythm studies, C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice exhibit considerable differences in their adaptation to circadian disruption, yet deeper comparisons remain unexplored. Here, we have established embryonic fibroblast cells derived from C57BL/6 mice (MEF) and BALB/c (BALB/3T3) mice, which have been transfected with the Bmal1 promoter-driven luciferase (Bmal1-Luc) reporter gene. Next, dexamethasone was applied for various cyclic stimulations, which revealed that Bmal1 bioluminescence of MEF cells was entrained to 24 to 26 h cycles, whereas BALB/3T3 cells have a wider range (22 to 28 h) with lower amplitudes. Behaviorally, BALB/c mice swiftly adapted to a 6-h advance light/dark cycle, unlike C57BL/6 mice. Furthermore, we found the expression of the circadian rhythm gene Npas2 in BALB/c mice is significantly lower than that in C57BL/6 mice. This observation is consistent with the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the intestine and lung tissues of C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice, based on the RNA-seq datasets downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO). In summary, our study uncovers that BALB/c mice possess greater resilience in circadian rhythm than C57BL/6 mice, both cellular and behaviorally, identifying potential genes underlying this difference. Physiological oscillations, such as those involved in brain activity, heartbeat, and respiration, display inherent rhythmicity across various timescales. However, adaptive behavior arises from the interaction between these intrinsic rhythms and external environmental cues. In this study, we used multimodal neurophysiological recordings, simultaneously capturing signals from the central and autonomic nervous systems (CNS and ANS), to explore the dynamics of brain and body rhythms in response to rhythmic auditory stimulation across three conditions: baseline (no auditory stimulation), passive auditory processing, and active auditory processing (discrimination task). Our findings demonstrate that active engagement with auditory stimulation synchronizes both CNS and ANS rhythms with the external rhythm, unlike passive and baseline conditions, as evidenced by power spectral density (PSD) and coherence analyses. Importantly, phase angle analysis revealed a consistent alignment across participants between their physiological oscillatory phases at stimulus or response onsets. This alignment was associated with reaction times, suggesting that certain phases of physiological oscillations are spontaneously prioritized across individuals due to their adaptive role in sensorimotor behavior. These results highlight the intricate interplay between CNS and ANS rhythms in optimizing sensorimotor responses to environmental demands, suggesting a potential mechanism of embodied predictive processing. Societal Impact Statement Summary Highland forests of Mozambique have been strongly modified by human activities for millennia. Some highlands have sheer rock cliffs and are highly inaccessible to people and appear relatively undisturbed. Evidence from the forest and soils of inaccessible Mount Lico show that the fire regime has changed over the recent millennia. As climate and fire regimes continue to change, management of highland ecosystems will be crucial to sustain the high biodiversity and mountain‐water resources that provide key ecosystem services to people living close to these forests. The sheer rock cliffs of the Mount Lico inselberg, northern Mozambique, is relatively inaccessible to people. A 0.57 km2 forest covers the top of the isolated mountain, and the tree demographics and soil offer an opportunity to investigate the long‐term fire ecology of the forests of the western, leeside of the mountain and potential for changing regional hydroclimate of the Late Holocene. On the western side of the mountaintop, a 20 × 20 m plot was surveyed for tree taxa, heights and bole diameters. A 220 cm deep pit was dug into the forest soil and analysed to describe the soil texture and carbon content. Charcoal was quantified on sieved subsamples and classified into charcoal morphologies that were then grouped by how readily entrainable on an index score. Three radiocarbon dates were collected from pieces charcoal. The forest is a combination of montane and woodland tree taxa that differed from the older, more mesic eastern side and reflected differential disturbance patterns. The reddish loam soils dated to the Middle Holocene. Charcoal was present in all soil subsamples and varied little until increasing consistently during the past millennium. The charcoal morphologies suggested a combination of locally derived charcoal and charcoal derived from the surrounding lowlands with the latter increasing in the past centuries. Few Holocene paleoenvironmental records have been developed from tropical soils in Africa and are useful in locations that do not host lakes and wetlands. Both tree demographics and soil charcoal suggest that changing forest disturbance regimes began during the past millennium. Significant evidence now supports the quality improvement seen in castings that employ naturally pressurized filling systems in their production. However, despite the documented evidence for improvement, these systems have not become ubiquitous. Gray iron, the industry's most prominent alloy, has been particularly slow to accept the shift in system design. The suggested tolerability of gray iron to turbulence, the market's price sensitivity, and the perceived economics of naturally pressurized systems are potential factors that have hindered adoption. However, if, through improved quality, the economic justification for these systems can be made in this adverse setting, there is a merit in their application to all alloys and processes. A sample gray iron part, currently being produced in a foundry environment with known porosity issues, was selected, to which a new system and several basin designs were applied. A mixed method analysis of casting simulations, production trials, and economic and environmental modeling was used to evaluate system performance. The results show a strong association between filling system design and sub-surface porosity. However, no association was found between basin design and porosity occurrence at lower porosity levels. Nevertheless, the economic and environmental modeling highlights that quality-orientated systems yield significant financial and environmental savings for the organization due to reduced scrap levels. The quantification of turbulence across the entire atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) is relatively rare compared to the surface layer. In this study we investigate the variation in profiles of vertical velocity variance, wind shear and eddy dissipation rate (ε) across the ABL in context with the dryline event over rain shadow region of the Western Ghats in India. The study primarily utilizes the wind profiler radar measurements along with the micrometeorological tower measurements. The spectral width measurements from the wind profiler radar are utilized for estimating turbulence spectral width after applying necessary corrections. Further, the vertical velocity variance is estimated through a combination of velocity and spectral width measurements from wind profiler radar. The vertical velocity variance is found to vary from 0.5 to 5.0 m2s−2; while the magnitude of ε varies between 10−2.0 and 10−4.5 m2s−3 within the ABL. An increase of up to 1.0 m2s−2 is observed in the vertical velocity variance across the ABL, while simultaneously higher ε magnitudes are observed near the entrainment zone of the ABL during the dryline event. The highly turbulent state of the ABL is found to be associated with significantly higher wind shear over the site from 2 to 4 km altitude. Flow-type landslides are not typical in this region of the Balkans. However, after the Tamara cyclone event in 2014, numerous such occurrences have been observed in Serbia. This paper presents the initial results of a detailed investigation into debris flows in Serbia, comparing findings from two programs: RAMMS DBF and Geoflow SPH. Located in Western Serbia, the Selanac debris flow is a complex event characterized by significant depths in the initial block and entrainment zone. Previous field investigations utilized ERT surveys, supplemented by laboratory tests, to characterize material behavior. Approximately 450,000 m3 of material began to flow following an extreme precipitation period, ultimately traveling 1.2 km to the deposition zone. For validation purposes, ERT profiles from both the deposition zone and the source area were utilized, with particular attention given to areas where entrainment was substantial, as this had a significant impact on the final models. The first objective of this research is to conduct a detailed investigation of debris flow using field investigations: geophysical (ERT) and aerial photogrammetry. The second objective is to evaluate the capacity of two debris flow propagation models to simulate the reality of these phenomena. The GeoFlow-SPH code overestimated the maximum propagation thickness in comparison to the RAMMS model. The numerical results regarding final depths closely align, especially when considering the estimated average depth in the deposition zone. Abstract Globally, catadromous freshwater eels of the genus Anguilla are of conservation concern, including critically endangered European eel (Anguilla anguilla). Pumping stations that move river water to a higher elevation severely impact eels during their seaward spawning migration. Fish-friendly pumps can mitigate fish injury and mortality but here we uniquely rethink a fish-friendly pump as a fish passage solution. In this pluriannual study, the seasonal timing of pump operation was misaligned with the typical silver eel migration period. Eels were almost exclusively nocturnal but night-time pumping represented as little as 5.6% a year. Night-time eel approaches were primarily influenced by pump duration and temperature, but did not align with lunar phase, unlike in unregulated rivers. After reaching the pumping station, eel passage was influenced by weedscreen aperture and increased when the aperture was increased. Passive sensor collision suggested non-pump infrastructure could cause injury and mortality to eels. The tapping paradigm offers valuable insights into movement timing; however, it simplifies mechanics by minimizing force, restricting motion, and relying on a clear contact endpoint. Thus, it may not fully capture the complexity of larger-scale multi-segmental (or single-segment) timed body movements. The aim of this study was to extend beyond the tapping paradigm by examining the timing of two large-scale movements commonly performed in physical fitness or rehabilitation modalities, with varying inherent balance threats: two-legged squatting (low balance threat) and standing hip abduction (higher balance threat) paced by a metronome set at the participants' preferred tempo (N = 39, all physically active). In synchronization with the metronome audio signal, the trunk and shank angular velocities were also recorded to extract the entrainment, synchronization, and pace stability metrics. Paired t-tests indicated similar entrainment in both movements (p > 0.05 for IRI match) but significant differences in timing metrics' manifestations (p ≤ 0.05, standing hip abduction: 50% greater IRI error, 30% lower synchronization error, 2.6% units lower pace stability). The similar entrainment but different synchronization error and pace stability highlight a complex timing interplay between balance threat/challenges and movement complexity concerning the two large-scale movements employed in physical fitness and rehabilitation modalities. A thorough understanding of how music and movement synthesize is vital for deeper exploration of multimedia artworks. In this article, I demonstrate a choreomusical analytic technique that links detailed analyses of both music and choreography from the ballet Fancy Free, a work that was the product of a close collaboration between Leonard Bernstein and Jerome Robbins. Specifically, I explore the three sailors' solo variations, noting placement and repetition of rhythmic and choreographic phrases, elisions and metric changes, and reinterpretation of rhythmic patterns. I observe differences in grouping and accents to reveal how the changing relationships between dance and music create unique characterizations for each of the sailors. Converging evidence points towards a link between musical rhythm and linguistic syntax processing. Several potentially shared cognitive mechanisms and overlapping brain regions have been proposed to account for these findings. The present study explores the hypothesis that a domain-general cognitive system responsible for hierarchical structure building constitutes one such component. In two experiments, French-speaking adults listened to rhythmically regular, irregular or silent primes before completing a grammaticality judgement task on Jabberwocky sentences. Both experiments showed a priming effect only in the first three sentences after priming. Experiment 1 (block design) showed a disadvantage of the irregular condition compared to both other conditions. Experiment 2 (mixed design) showed an advantage in the regular condition compared to the irregular condition. Across the two experiments, grammaticality judgement performance correlated with rhythm discrimination. Managing temporal complexity is a fundamental challenge in complex innovation processes, yet the temporal work whereby actors seize opportune moments (kairos) in an environment dominated by clock-time structures (chronos) remains elusive. Temporal tensions can partly be resolved through entrainment, that is, by aligning activities with dominant temporal structures. However, although entrainment ensures the exploitation of a predefined path, it is unable to harness unexpected developments as opportunities for exploration. Thus, navigating the competing temporal demands of chronos and kairos requires not just ambidextrous but also ambitemporal organizing. Collecting and analyzing in-depth interview and observational data from pharmaceutical drug discovery and development, we find that actors sometimes resolve temporal tensions through entrainment to ensure coordination and predictability. In other instances, however, actors abductively transform temporal tensions into novel interpretations and new courses of action. As such, temporal tensions become more than a bothersome deviation from the planned schedule, but an opportunity for creative agency. This understanding of kairos—as a process unfolding through temporal work—relies not only on detraining from chronos (i.e., momentarily detaching from the dominant temporal structure to question underlying assumptions), but also on its reframing and reconfiguration. We contribute to the literature on complex innovation and temporality by theorizing a transformative perspective on ambitemporal organizing, which relies less on paradoxical notions and instead emphasizes how kairos is enacted and seized within and from chronos. AbstractCross-education (CE) is a phenomenon whereby motor training of one limb leads to improved performance in the opposite untrained limb. External pacing of a motor task can enhance CE; however, the influence of different pacing methods is poorly understood. This study explored how motor training with auditory (AP) and visual pacing (VP) impacts CE with a visuomotor force target task. Sixty-one participants performed a unimanual motor task. Participants were randomized into a visual (n = 31) or auditory (n = 30) pacing stimuli condition. The primary outcome was cumulative error scores for each hand, before and after visuomotor training. Pacing type did not yield different magnitudes of CE. However, after adjusting for baseline differences, a significant hand (trained vs. untrained) × practice side (dominant or non-dominant) interaction (p = .013, ηp2 = .106) and a group main effect (p = .036, ηp2 = .165) were observed. Visual pacing resulted in greater improvements in task performance compared to auditory pacing regardless of hand or practice side, while training the dominant limb resulting in a greater interlimb asymmetry regardless of pacing stimulus. Globally, catadromous freshwater eels of the genus Anguilla are of conservation concern, including critically endangered European eel (Anguilla anguilla). Pumping stations that move river water to a higher elevation severely impact eels during their seaward spawning migration. Fish-friendly pumps can mitigate fish injury and mortality but here we uniquely rethink a fish-friendly pump as a fish passage solution. In this pluriannual study, the seasonal timing of pump operation was misaligned with the typical silver eel migration period. Eels were almost exclusively nocturnal but night-time pumping represented as little as 5.6% a year. Night-time eel approaches were primarily influenced by pump duration and temperature, but did not align with lunar phase, unlike in unregulated rivers. After reaching the pumping station, eel passage was influenced by weedscreen aperture and increased when the aperture was increased. Passive sensor collision suggested non-pump infrastructure could cause injury and mortality to eels. It is therefore recommended pump operation should align with the timing of silver eel migration, weedscreen and pump entrance efficiencies should be maximised, and non-pump infrastructure must have low fish injury risk. A series of laboratory experiments was conducted to study the dynamics of sand–water coaxial jets in stagnant water. The effects of the velocity ratio of the annular to the core jets on the sand concentration, velocity, mixing properties, and energy distribution of sand–water coaxial jets were studied. In comparison to sand jets, the existence of carrier fluid in sand–water coaxial jets decreased the concentration fluctuations of sand particles. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) techniques were utilized to study the low-rank dynamic behavior on flow entrainment and particle oscillations. It was indicated that the first two POD modes have the most coherent and energetic quantitative flow features during the entrainment process. The energy contribution of the first five POD modes was reduced by 50% in sand–water coaxial jets with relatively low velocity ratios of Ru<0.35. The SPOD analysis revealed that particle oscillations can be characterized by the Kelvin–Helmholtz type wave instabilities, and sand–water coaxial jets with small velocity ratios (i.e., Ru<1.24) had weaker vortex shedding and particle velocity fluctuations. The SPOD analysis indicated that most of the turbulence kinetic energy was concentrated in the low-frequency modes and coaxial jets with high-velocity ratios. The power spectral density (PSD) of concentration signals demonstrated that the dominant frequency of vortex shedding increased by increasing the radial distance from the jet axis. The PSD analysis of sand concentration for Ru=0.62 and 0.74 was consistent with the Kolmogorov scaling law at dominant frequencies ranging between 30 and 40 Hz. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Debris‐flow volumes can increase along their flow path by entraining sediment stored in the channel bed and banks, thus also increasing hazard potential. Theoretical considerations, laboratory experiments and field investigations all indicate that the saturation conditions of the sediment along the flow path can greatly influence the amount of sediment entrained. However, this process is usually not considered for practical applications. This study aims to close this gap by combining runout and hydrological models into a predictive framework that is calibrated and tested using unique observations of sediment erosion and debris‐flow properties available at a Swiss debris‐flow observation station (Illgraben). To this end, hourly water input to the erodible channel is predicted using a simple, process‐based hydrological model, and the resulting water saturation level in the upper sediment layer of the channel is modelled based on a Hortonian infiltration concept. Debris‐flow entrainment is then predicted using the RAMMS debris‐flow runout model. We find a strong correlation between the modelled saturation level of the sediment on the flow path and the channel‐bed erodibility for single‐surge debris‐flow events with distinct fronts, indicating that the modelled water content is a good predictor for erosion simulated in RAMMS. Debris‐flow properties with more complex flow behaviour (e.g., multiple surges or roll waves) are not as well predicted using this procedure, indicating that more physically complete models are necessary. Finally, we demonstrate how this modelling framework can be used for climate change impact assessment and show that earlier snowmelt may shift the peak of the debris‐flow season to earlier in the year. Our novel modelling framework provides a plausible approach to reproduce saturation‐dependent entrainment and thus better constrain event volumes for current and future hazard assessment. Pittendrigh and Daan's 1976 article "Pacemaker structure: A clock for all seasons" marks the foundation of modern seasonal chronobiology. It proposed the internal coincidence model comprised of a Morning (M) and Evening (E) oscillator, which are coupled but synchronized separately by dawn and dusk. It has become an attractive model to explain the seasonal adaptation of circadian rhythms. Using the example of the European hamster, this article connects the classical entrainment concept to species decline and, ultimately, conservation concepts. Seasonality of this species is well studied and circannual rhythms have been described in at least 32 parameters. The European hamster is listed as critically endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list. Changes in the temporal structure of the environment (the chronotope) caused by climate change and light pollution might be responsible for the global decline. The article shows that classical chronobiological concepts such as the internal coincidence model (Pittendrigh and Daan Pittendrigh and Daan, J Comp Physiol [a] 106:333–355, 1976) are helpful to understand the (chronobiological) causes of the decline and can potentially support species conservation. Knowing the species' physiological limitations as well as its adaptation capacities can potentially prevent its extinction at a time when classical conservation concepts have reached their limits. In 1976, Pittendrigh and Daan established a theoretical framework which has coordinated research on circadian clock entrainment and photoperiodism until today. The "wild clocks" approach, which concerns studying wild species in their natural habitats, has served to test their models, add new insights, and open new directions of research. Here, we review an integrated laboratory, field and modeling work conducted with subterranean rodents (Ctenomys sp.) living under an extreme pattern of natural daily light exposure. Tracking animal movement and light exposure with biologgers across seasons and performing laboratory experiments on running-wheel cages, we uncovered the mechanisms of day/night entrainment of the clock and of photoperiodic time measurement in this subterranean organism. We confirmed most of the features of Pittendrigh and Daan's models but highlighted the importance of integrating them with ecophysiological techniques, methodologies, and theories to get a full picture of the clock in the wild. This integration is essential to fully establish the importance of the temporal dimension in ecological studies and tackling relevant questions such as the role of the clock for all seasons in a changing planet. Transitional changes in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) are known to facilitate the onset of terrestrial fog, which is defined as a condition with near‐surface visibility <1 km due to airborne water droplets. In particular, the evening transition from a daytime convective ABL to a night‐time stable ABL provides favorable conditions for fog. This article describes a local fog event observed during the evening transition at a Canadian islet in the north Atlantic known as Sable Island during the "Fog and Turbulence Interactions in the Marine Atmosphere (Fatima)" field campaign. The comprehensive set of data collected using a myriad of instruments covering a wide range of scales allowed identification of a novel mechanism underlying this fog event. Therein an ocean–land discontinuity created a flow regime consisting of several stacked boundary layers, interplay of which produced a thin low‐level cloud that then diffused downward to the surface, causing visibility reduction. Background: Differentiation between atrioventricular nodal reentry tachycardia (AVNRT) and accessory pathway-mediated atrioventricular reentrant tachycardia (AVRT) is challenging even during electrophysiological testing. Objective: To test the use of the beginning of right ventricular entrainment to differentiate between AVRT and AVNRT as an independent criterion with high sensitivity and specificity. Methods: We studied 50 patients with supra-ventricular tachycardia. Right ventricle (RV) pacing was performed 10-40ms faster than tachycardia. Once a fixed QRS morphology was observed in 12-leads ECG, we determined after which beat the atrial perpetuation had been achieved. Results: In all the 19 patients who had AVRT, atrial perpetuation occurred from the first beat. However, in all 31 cases of AVNRT atrial perpetuation occurred after the first beat. Conclusion: Analyzing the beginning of ventricular entrainment can indeed differentiate between AVRT and AVNRT cases easily with a high positive predictive value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) that occur in the Baiu frontal zone (BFZ) can cause devastating flash floods during early summer in Japan; however, the environmental conditions necessary for their development require further investigation. High‐frequency atmospheric soundings, conducted using multiple marine vessels in the East China Sea on 19 June 2022, captured the detailed environmental conditions pertaining to the development of an MCS within the BFZ. The MCS, which developed rapidly without any remarkable preceding synoptic or mesoscale disturbance in the mid‐ or upper troposphere, caused intense precipitation exceeding 80 mm/hr. The MCS persisted for approximately 6 hr, and it intensified when the influx of nearly saturated air near the sea surface toward a weak surface front overlapped with the influx of free‐tropospheric moist air. The influx of nearly saturated air near the sea surface ensured conditional instability within the lower troposphere. The influx of moist air in the free troposphere contributed to the near‐saturation conditions above the boundary layer, a feature inherent to the BFZ, and played an important role in minimizing the reduction in the buoyancy of air parcels. The results of this study indicate that a better forecast of the horizontal distribution of free tropospheric moist air is beneficial for limiting the potential area of genesis of MCS in the BFZ, and a more comprehensive understanding of the vertical variations in moisture transport contributes to an improved forecast skill for MCS in the BFZ. Plain Language Summary: A very long, stagnant atmospheric front that forms over East Asia in early summer is often associated with a mesoscale convective system (a cloud system that occurs in connection with an ensemble of thunderstorms and produces a contiguous precipitation area) that can cause flash floods. The recent increase in the number of heavy rainfall disasters has led to increased interest in the conditions under which such systems develop around the front. In this study, the conditions favorable for the development of such a system with no remarkable upper‐tropospheric low pressure system were investigated using an unprecedented high‐frequency and dense observation network. The system developed when the influxes of two very moist air masses, one near the sea surface and the other well above the sea surface, overlapped vertically. The moist air near the sea surface ensured that the atmosphere was unstable, and the moist air above contributed to the development of the system by suppressing convection weakening. The findings of this study indicate that a more comprehensive understanding of moist air transport may facilitate more accurate forecasting of convective systems. In this study, two types of recycling scenarios are assessed for spent battery materials using froth flotation. The first is for a single cathode chemistry and would be considered as the most likely scenario for a large battery manufacturer, who takes back their own batteries for reprocessing. The second scenario is for mixed cathode chemistry, and this would be the most likely scenario for regional reprocessing. The mixed spent battery materials assessed in this work were sourced from such an industrial recycling operation in Australia. Good results were obtained for both recycling scenarios. The anode recovery and anode grade in the final concentrate for both materials evaluated were for the single spent battery material 80.1% and 90.3%, respectively, and for the mixed spent battery material, 77.4% and 82.0%, respectively. For the final tailings, the cathode grades for both materials tested were 93.9% and 87.1%, respectively, with the lower grade for the mixed spent battery attributed to the high content of impurities in the original material. These results highlight the importance of the preprocessing ahead of the flotation process. Multiport mini-channel thermosyphon with hydraulic diameters less than 2 mm undergoes a severe entrainment problem both in vapor and liquid regions, impeding the flow and affecting the performance characteristics. To address this issue, a novel multiport mini-channel loop thermosyphon (MPMC-LT) design is proposed. This design separates the vapor and liquid flow paths, reducing entrainment and enhancing the performance characteristics. Tests are conducted with heat loads ranging from 5 to 45W at four inclinations (0°, 30°, 60°, and 90°) relative to the horizontal plane. Results revealed that the MPMC-LT design extends the entrainment limit by 10.6 times compared to conventional designs, reducing the interaction between the vapor and condensed working fluid. Additionally, the total entropy and thermal resistance drops by 20.7 % and 19.9 %, respectively at an optimum inclination angle of 30°. It is also noted that the effective thermal conductivity at the optimal inclination is 5.8 times higher compared to the conventional multiport thermosyphon designs. The design effectivity uses the buoyancy, inertial and surface tension forces to reduce resistance in the fluid flow, thereby enhancing the heat transfer characteristics. These results highlight that MPMC-LT is a suitable thermal management device for power electronic systems.

Abstract A simple analytical model, the zero‐buoyancy plume (ZBP) model, has been proposed to understand how small‐scale processes such as plume‐environment mixing and evaporation affect the steady‐state structure of the atmosphere. In this study, we refine the ZBP model to achieve self‐consistent analytical solutions for convective mass flux, addressing the inconsistencies in previous solutions. Our refined ZBP model reveals that increasing plume‐environment mixing can increase upper‐troposphere mass flux through two pathways: increased cloud evaporation or reduced atmospheric stability. To validate these findings, we conducted small‐domain convection‐permitting Radiative‐Convective Equilibrium simulations with horizontal resolutions ranging from 4 km to 125 m. As a proxy for plume‐environment mixing strength, the diagnosed entrainment rate increases with finer resolution. Consistent with a previous study, we observed that both anvil cloud fraction and upper‐troposphere mass flux increase with higher resolution. Analysis of the clear‐sky energy balance in the simulations with two different microphysics schemes identified both pathways proposed by the ZBP model. The dominant pathway depends on the relative strengths of evaporation cooling and radiative cooling in the environment. Our work provides a refined simple framework for understanding the interaction between small‐scale convective processes and large‐scale atmospheric structure.

This study investigates countercurrent air-water two-phase flow in vertical pipes with inner diameters of 26 mm and 44 mm and a height of 2000 mm, under controlled conditions to eliminate heat and mass transfer. Cutting-edge techniques were employed to measure the liquid film thickness (δ) and entrainment (e) within the annular flow pattern. The methodology involved a systematic comparative analysis of experimental results against established models, identifying the most accurate methods for predicting flow behavior. Specifically, the Schubring et al. correlation was found to most accurately predict e in 26 mm pipes, while the Wallis correlation was more accurate for 44 mm pipes. Additionally, interfacial shear stress was analyzed, confirming the high precision of the δ and e parameters. This research enhances the understanding of countercurrent air-water two-phase flow by providing reliable estimation methods for different pipe diameters and emphasizes the significance of accurately determining interfacial shear stress. Key findings include the identification of the most accurate models for different pipe sizes and addressing challenges in measuring δ and e under controlled conditions. The study’s novelty lies in its comprehensive comparative analysis of existing models, leading to improved predictions of flow dynamics in vertical pipes, thereby contributing valuable insights into two-phase flow behavior in geosciences and environmental engineering.

Abstract Physiological oscillations, such as those involved in brain activity, heartbeat, and respiration, display inherent rhythmicity across various timescales. However, adaptive behavior arises from the interaction between these intrinsic rhythms and external environmental cues. In this study, we used multimodal neurophysiological recordings, simultaneously capturing signals from the central and autonomic nervous systems (CNS and ANS), to explore the dynamics of brain and body rhythms in response to rhythmic auditory stimulation across three conditions: baseline (no auditory stimulation), passive auditory processing, and active auditory processing (discrimination task). Our findings demonstrate that active engagement with auditory stimulation synchronizes both CNS and ANS rhythms with the external rhythm, unlike passive and baseline conditions, as evidenced by power spectral density (PSD) and coherence analyses. Importantly, phase angle analysis revealed a consistent alignment across participants between their physiological oscillatory phases at stimulus or response onsets. This alignment was associated with reaction times, suggesting that certain phases of physiological oscillations are spontaneously prioritized across individuals due to their adaptive role in sensorimotor behavior. These results highlight the intricate interplay between CNS and ANS rhythms in optimizing sensorimotor responses to environmental demands, suggesting a potential mechanism of embodied predictive processing.

We define forward entrainment as that part of behavioral or neural entrainment that outlasts the entraining stimulus. In this review, we examine conditions under which one may optimally observe forward entrainment. In Part 1, we review and evaluate studies that have observed forward entrainment using a variety of psychophysical methods (detection, discrimination, and reaction times), different target stimuli (tones, noise, and gaps), different entraining sequences (sinusoidal, rectangular, or sawtooth waveforms), a variety of physiological measures (MEG, EEG, ECoG, CSD), in different modalities (auditory and visual), across modalities (audiovisual and auditory-motor), and in different species. In Part 2, we describe those experimental conditions that place constraints on the magnitude of forward entrainment, including an evaluation of the effects of signal uncertainty and attention, temporal envelope complexity, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), rhythmic rate, prior experience, and intersubject variability. In Part 3 we theorize on potential mechanisms and propose that forward entrainment may instantiate a dynamic auditory afterimage that lasts a fraction of a second to minimize prediction error in signal processing.

Abstract While numerous types of chemical cosmetic cleansers have been presented, those with sensitive skin may still experience some irritation while using them. Moreover, the environmental issue of chemical agents has been documented repeatedly. To address these, we suggest the potential application of a micro-sized bubble-laden water jet to cleanse the cosmetics without (or less) using chemical detergents. We devised a venturi-type nozzle with a mesh and air holes capable of generating massive fine bubbles. By testing with the foundation and lip tint (known to be highly adhesive) coated on the synthetic leather and artificial skin surfaces, we measured that the cleansing performance of the bubbly jet is much better (even without the chemical agent) than the single-phase liquid jet. As a mechanism for enhanced removal, it is understood that the greater kinetic energy of the jet due to the acceleration of the effective liquid–air mixture flow and the direct bubble-cosmetic collisions play essential roles. We believe that the present results will spur the development of environment-friendly cleaning methods.

For snow-avalanche hazard mapping, one needs efficient tools that nevertheless capture the essential physical processes. The code MoT-PSA (Method of Transport – Powder Snow Avalanche) described here is based on the two-layer depth-averaged formulation for mixed snow avalanches developed by Eglit and co-workers in the 1980s but is extended to 3-D terrain and uses a fast numerical scheme based on the method of transport. Compared to previous works, we introduce novel formulations for the suspension and deposition of snow from the dense core. Snow cover and air entrainment are quantified with physics-based models. A sensitivity study of the model parameters on an idealized topography shows that both the dense core and the parameters of the powder snow cloud (PSC) governing particle suspension and settling significantly affect the dynamics. As expected, we observe that snow cover entrainment favours the formation of large PSCs with long runout. The powder-snow avalanche that occurred in Lom (Norway) on 27 February 2020 is back-calculated using MoT-PSA. With plausible parameter values, the model reproduces the dense core stopping at the gully's base and the dilute PSC travelling across the frozen lake for almost 1 km.

Daytime atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) dynamics—including potential temperature budgets, water vapour budgets, and entrainment rates—are presented from in situ flight data taken on six afternoons near Fresno in the San Joaquin Valley (SJV) of California during July/August 2016. The flights took place as a part of the California Baseline Ozone Transport Study aimed at investigating transport pathways of air entering the Central Valley from offshore and mixing down to the surface. Midday entrainment velocity estimates ranged from 0.8 to 5.4 cm s−1 and were derived from a combination of continuously determined ABL heights during each flight and model-derived subsidence rates, which averaged -2.0 cm s−1 in the flight region. A strong correlation was found between entrainment velocity (normalized by the convective velocity scale) and an inverse bulk ABL Richardson number, suggesting that wind shear at the ABL top plays a significant role in driving entrainment. Similarly, we found a strong correlation between the entrainment efficiency (the ratio of entrainment to surface heat fluxes with an average of 0.23 ± 0.15) and the wind speed at the ABL top. We explore the synoptic conditions that generate higher winds near the ABL top and propose that warm anomalies in the southern Sierra Nevada mountains promote increased entrainment. Additionally, a method is outlined to estimate turbulence kinetic energy, convective velocity scale (w*), and the surface sensible heat flux in the ABL from a slow, airborne wind measurement system using mixed-layer similarity theory.

Stable and entrainable physiological circadian rhythms are crucial for overall health and well-being. The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), the primary circadian pacemaker in mammals, consists of diverse neuron types that collectively generate a circadian profile of electrical activity. However, the mechanisms underlying the regulation of endogenous neuronal excitability in the SCN remain unclear. Two-pore domain potassium channels (K2P), including TASK-3, are known to play a significant role in maintaining SCN diurnal homeostasis by inhibiting neuronal activity at night. In this study, we investigated the role of TASK-3 in SCN circadian neuronal regulation and behavioural photoentrainment using a TASK-3 global knockout mouse model. Our findings demonstrate the importance of TASK-3 in maintaining SCN hyperpolarization during the night and establishing SCN sensitivity to glutamate. Specifically, we observed that TASK-3 knockout mice lacked diurnal variation in resting membrane potential and exhibited altered glutamate sensitivity both in vivo and in vitro. The movement of landslide-debris flows is strongly affected by entrainment and runout-path terrain. Herein, mobility alteration was explored from an energy perspective via the discrete element method, using the Shaziba geohazard. The dynamics of the Shaziba geohazard were investigated based on field investigations and numerical simulations. The multiple energy evolutions, conversions, and dissipations of different initiation areas and distinct landslide processes, including kinetic, potential, frictional, and collisional energy, were quantitatively and systematically investigated. The simulation results provide a clear presentation of the inter-particle interactions and energy transfer behavior. Friction caused the most significant energy dissipation, yet collisions dominated the mobility reduction during the entrainment process and interactions with the runout-path terrain. The entrained area possessed higher mobility due to entrainment-induced energy transfer, with distinct forms of energy supplement at different depths. Moreover, the deflection and arching effects of runout-path terrains altered the velocity and direction of landslides and could be used to explain the dissipation of landslide energy as well as reduced mobility. At the cliff, the high-velocity and near-vertical impact on the sediment resulted in the rapid dissipation of landslide energy in collisions. We investigated the role of alpha in the suppression of attention capture by salient but to-be-suppressed (negative and nonpredictive) color cues, expecting a potential boosting effect of alpha-rhythmic entrainment on feature-specific cue suppression. We did so by presenting a rhythmically flickering visual bar of 10 Hz before the cue - either on the cue's side or opposite the cue -while an arrhythmically flickering visual bar was presented on the respective other side. We hypothesized that rhythmic entrainment at cue location could enhance the suppression of the cue. Testing 27 participants ranging from 18 to 39 years of age, we found both behavioral and electrophysiological evidence of suppression: Search times for a target at a negatively cued location were delayed relative to a target away from the cued location (inverse validity effects). In addition, an event-related potential indicative for suppression (the Distractor Positivity, Pd) was observed following rhythmic but not arrhythmic stimulation, indicating that suppression was boosted by the stimulation. This was also echoed in higher spectral power and intertrial phase coherence of EEG at rhythmically versus arrhythmically stimulated electrode sites, albeit only at the second harmonic (20 Hz), but not at the stimulation frequency. In addition, inverse validity effects were not modulated by rhythmic entrainment congruent with the cue side. Hence, we propose that rhythmic visual stimulation in the alpha range could support suppression, though behavioral evidence remains elusive, in contrast to electrophysiological findings.
