Routines shape many aspects of day-to-day consumption. While prior research has established the importance of habits in consumer behavior, little work has been done to understand the implications of routines—which the authors define as repeated behaviors with recurring, temporal structures—for customer management. One reason for this dearth is the difficulty of measuring routines from transaction data, particularly when routines vary substantially across customers. The authors propose a new approach for doing so, which they apply in the context of ridesharing. They model customer-level routines with Bayesian nonparametric Gaussian processes, leveraging a novel kernel that allows for flexible yet precise estimation of routines. These Gaussian processes are nested in inhomogeneous Poisson processes of usage, allowing the authors to estimate customers' routines and decompose their usage into routine and nonroutine parts. They show the value of detecting routines for customer relationship management in the context of ridesharing, where they find that routines are associated with higher future usage and activity rates, and more resilience to service failures. Moreover, the authors show how these outcomes vary by the types of routines customers have, and by whether trips are part of the customer's routine, suggesting a role for routines in segmentation and targeting. Although liminal theory explains transitional periods in consumers' lives – such as preadolescence – the impact of these transitions on emotionally connected actors and the transformations that the latter endure have been largely overlooked. Through a qualitative study of the mothers of preteen girls, we show that liminality spills over and that mothers transform from fully needed to authoritative-friendly moms. During this process, these mothers engage in spilled-over liminal consumption (SOLC), which comprehends concomitantly loosely and creatively crafted rituals and new and re-signified routines. However, amid the process of assuming a new mother's role and helping their daughters' transformation, these mothers unreflectively reinforce traditional gender norms. The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the daily lives of older adults. Three case reports illustrate how individuals have coped with loss, maintained routines, and faced emotional challenges. Understanding these experiences can guide efforts to promote the well-being and resilience of older adults during this time. Routines are an essential aspect of innovation processes as all new ideas must be implemented into daily routines to work. Previously, public management theory has understood routines as barriers to innovation that constrain collaboration due to inertia. This study aims to introduce a new understanding of routines as a precondition for innovation processes. By employing organizational theory and public management theory, we investigate routines through the micro-processes involved. Background: Adults experiencing homelessness (AEH) make up an underserved community, especially in receipt of occupational therapy (OT) services. While there is growing knowledge on the occupational needs of this community, little is known of the occupational needs of AEH to successfully sustain housing long-term. The primary objective of this study is to describe the lived experiences of adults who have successfully transitioned to stable housing after a long period of homelessness. The secondary objective is to use findings to identify key areas for OT intervention with adults immediately following homelessness. Method: The participants included five adults 25 years of age and older who have lived experience of homelessness and have transitioned to housing 1 or more years before the start of the study. All of the participants were clients of a community-based organization that provides support services for AEH to maintain stable housing. A thematic analysis of audio-recorded, semi-structured interviews was conducted. Two researchers reviewed the interviews to ensure intra-rater reliability. Results: These five semi-structured interviews resulted in the following six overarching themes: relationships, environments, routines, health management, trauma, and gaps in services. Based on mobile phone data from the city of Barcelona, Spain, generalized linear models are used to analyse the relationship between urban mobilities and the spatial and temporal patterning of robbery and theft. The hypothesis was made that mobility fluxes may undermine social control mechanisms by altering the socio-demographic composition of urban populations, therefore increasing the risk of crime victimization. The analysis brought together indicators of land use and a measure of the ambient population disaggregated by different profiles of public space users (by sex, age, and place of residence). The results indicate that robbery and theft tend to cluster around locations that attract a higher proportion of non-residents (i.e. national and international visitors). Non-local visitors, who visit the city occasionally or once in a lifetime, lack a comprehensive knowledge of the environment which would help them to navigate safely through the urban space. Therefore, their presence not only unsettles the social routines of public spaces in Barcelona but also reflects negatively in terms of crime occurrence. This finding raises questions about how to accommodate growing mobilities in our cities without detriment to incumbent residents and their safety, which seems to be critical in post-COVID-19 urban planning. Absorptive Capacity (ACAP) helps firms acquire, assimilate, and utilise new knowledge. Drawing on crucial managerial perspectives, this study employs a Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Model (PLS-SEM) to scrutinise the various dimensions of ACAP (e.g. routines versus extra work, organisational culture, leadership, and the trustworthiness of knowledge sources) concerning market knowledge and knowledge creation outcomes (e.g. knowledge creation activities and firm's private knowledge) among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Thailand. The findings indicate that all dimensions, with the exception of extra work, contribute significantly to the augmentation of firm-specific knowledge. However, only routines and knowledge-oriented leadership demonstrate a positive association with knowledge-creation activities. The results suggested that managers and top executives of SMEs should emphasise non-financial rewards more, create knowledge learning routines, and support the learning culture to enhance the ACAP for market knowledge. In spite of its common use, professionalism is not a self-explanatory concept in the field of journalism studies. Even though there is an already extensive literature on this issue, what its basic elements are and how they can be assessed are still subject of debate. In order to contribute to this discussion, the article proposes a conceptual model that integrates four categories: routines, orientation, autonomy, and training. The proposal made here builds on previous knowledge, and attempts to strengthen the problematisation of this topic. For the purpose of testing how applicable this approach is on the field and, hence, empirically refine the proposed concept, the inquiry draws on 21 semi-structured interviews with Mexican journalists who work for quality news organisations. I develop and test a theory that explains why organizations may struggle to adapt in the face of change even when their members are aware of change, are motivated to adapt, and have the resources to do so. I build on complex-systems theory, which posits that organizations face a hierarchy of interdependent problems: they must choose how to fulfill different specialized tasks and choose processes to integrate the outputs of these tasks. Because these choices are interdependent, environmental change that directly affects only a few tasks in isolation can indirectly affect the viability of major organizational processes. Recognizing these ripple effects is difficult, however: understanding complex interdependencies is challenging for decision makers, and the division of labor within organizations can create an illusion of separability between tasks. As a result, organizations may respond to such change by engaging in "modular search" for new ways to fulfill specialized tasks, but they may fail to engage in "systemic search" for new processes integrating the outputs of specialized tasks unless they can rely on information-processing structures that help decision makers better understand interdependencies among choices. I test my theory by applying sequence analysis methods to micro-level behavioral data on competitive video gaming (esports) teams. Introduction: Sleep is vital for health in older adulthood. Ethnic disparities have been noted with regards to sleep health. However, culturally appropriate approaches to sleep as a broader social experience are lacking. Methods: Here, sleep-related group interviews were conducted in the form of hui (group meetings and discussions) with eleven participants of a health service intervention for older Māori (the Indigenous people of New Zealand) and their whanau (extended family). Notes were collated and analyzed thematically. Results: Four key themes were constructed that represent the key conversations and ideas. These concerned the conceptualizing of sleep--including appreciation for its somatic role but also the spiritual properties of sleep states; the changing obligations around sleep and wake--including individual and communal time use and changing cultural and familial obligations with advancing age; and the barriers and facilitators for supporting sleep--including the social and spiritual nature of communal sleeping, the schedules and sleep of others, as well as holistic and environmental methods for relaxation. Findings demonstrate themultifaceted nature of sleep and aging among Māori. Culturally relevant interpretations of sleep practices and disturbances were offered and are beyond typical Western models which are predominantly medicalized. Discussion: This work aids the understanding and representation of sleep as a social and cultural perspective within the New Zealand context. This provides foundations for future participatory research to design culturally appropriate approaches to assessing and supporting sleep health in forms that aremeaningful for aging well across cultures. The objective of this article is to relate the concepts of routines and emerging properties to understand how organizational processes, characterized by the use of similar routines, produce unforeseen and different results among firms. The analysis starts from the recognition that the organization is a complex structure, constructed of heterogeneous and adaptive parts that present relations of interdependence. Based on the interaction between these parties, it is possible to observe the emergence of behavior routines that are disseminated among other firms, making possible not only the reproduction of the organization, but also the generalization of these patterns for sectors of economic activity. Research has shown the importance of routines for optimal child development. A systematic review can offer a detailed overview of the evidence linking routines to child outcomes, particularly in high‐risk settings. This review aimed to elucidate the association between daily routines and child development and to pinpoint the protective role of routines in high‐risk environments. A search of PubMed and PsycINFO databases yielded literature from 1950 to June 2020. Out of 4297 initial hits, 170 studies met the selection criteria. Findings mainly indicate that routines are associated with positive developmental outcomes in children, covering cognitive, self‐regulation, social–emotional, academic skills, and overall mental and physical health. The results also underline the protective power of routines in challenging environments. The study suggests possible mechanisms through which routines influence child outcomes and recommends avenues for future research, supporting evidence‐based strategies to encourage parental use of routines. This conceptual paper presents the analytical theory of agency (ATA), an overlooked philosophical approach to the concept of action, to develop its theoretical basis in routines research in which the constructs of action and agency play crucial roles. It expounds, in the framework of ATA, the ideas of the spectrum of intentionality, kinds of action, and collective agency, which help advance the rigor of action-theoretical concepts in routines research as well as reveal the rationale of the microfoundational approach to routine actions. Habits and routines are foundational to several organizational theories. Considering organizational members to be predominately employees, established habit-based models recognize how these members' habits help build organizations and are shaped by them. Departing from this traditional, internal focus, our paper highlights an important aspect of organizing, which has been relatively overlooked by established habit-based models, namely, how firms engineer consumer habits to their advantage and, by extension, strategically shape the habits of other key resource providers. To better theorize consumer habits and their engineering, and to integrate these phenomena within extant organizational theory, we develop a new habit-based perspective relating firms, consumers, and social institutions. Inspired by Dewey's transactional approach and drawing on modern habit science, our transactional framework helps illuminate habit engineering, promotes a richer and more integrated view of organizing, and opens new possibilities for habit-based organizational theories. Background: Restricted interests and repetitive behavior are characteristics of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The likelihood that persons with ASD will respond adversely to unfamiliar situations is great. The novel coronavirus outbreak has resulted in disruptions to all aspects of routine and behavior. Hence, this study proposed to investigate the impact of the outbreak on the eating behavior and routines of childrenwith ASD in Saudi Arabia through the perceptions of their parents. Method: A cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach was utilized to obtain data from 150 parents of children with ASD aged =18 years in Saudi Arabia. The data collected included demographic data of the parents, the ASD status of the family, impact of COVID-19 to the family, eating behavior of the children with ASD, and daily routines of the children with ASD. Moreover, parents were able to provide comments regarding their children's eating behavior or daily routines. Results: The study found that changes in the eating behavior of children with ASD were found to differ significantly (p<0.05) based on the number of children with ASD, the age of the children with ASD, the gender of the children with ASD, and the severity of their ASD symptoms. Moreover, changes to dinner-time routines were found to differ significantly (p<0.05) based on the age of the children with ASD. Also, changes to morning routines were found to differ significantly (p<0.05) based on the age of the children with ASD, their gender, and the severity of their ASD symptoms. Additionally, impact of COVID-19 to the family had a significant impact to eating behavior and daily routines of the children with ASD. Conclusion: This study found that the eating behavior and daily routines of children with ASD in Saudi Arabia have been considerably worsened and changed. The study recommends the collaboration of multidisciplinary teams and parents to modify or design interventions that help to change their eating behavior and routine can be implemented in the home. The current work presents VocabStudy, a collection of natural language samples and children's vocabularies collected remotely by parents via a mobile phone application. The corpus contains 567,003 word tokens and represents 144 hours of speech over a period of six months from the language environment of 63 British toddlers aged 13 to 28 months. The corpus incorporates labeled speech samples of five typical routines: mealtime, bedtime, playtime, bathtime, and nappytime (i.e., diaper). To explore consistency and variability across these five linguistic contexts, topic modeling was employed. The topic most successfully detected as having a unique structure was mealtime, which was identified as such nearly 100% of the time; bathtime, nappytime, and bedtime were found to cluster together most of the time, suggesting that they have a similar language structure; playtime was correctly identified as such about 14% of the time. To validate the accuracy of parents marking the words that their child produced, the child's utterances found in the audio recordings were examined. About 18% of the vocabulary reported by parents appeared in the transcripts, and the reported vocabulary sizes were highly correlated with the number of unique words uttered by the children (ρ =.72, p < 001). The results suggest that most parents marked the words soon after their children start producing them (p <.001, d = 0.9). I discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using a mobile phone application as a method to collect children's data remotely, what worked to keep participants entering data, and what could have been done to avoid some issues encountered. The build quality of new UK homes is negatively affected by poor quality management practices during the construction process. By implementing stringent quality management (QM) standards, housebuilders can improve build quality but implementing these organization-wide changes relies on housebuilder staff, designers and sub-contractors learning new working practices. This paper explores the tensions which emerge within housebuilders, as they implement new QM procedures. A longitudinal qualitative case study was conducted, where time was spent with housebuilder staff in three regional offices, two years apart. Methods include participant observation, semi-structured interviews and a review of organizational documentation. The findings highlight several learning paradoxes which arise at different stages of the housebuilding process and show how actors manage (or cope with) these paradoxes through their daily practices. This includes processes of simplifying and applying, improvising and problem-solving and aggregating and analyzing. Whilst these either-or approaches enable staff to resolve the immediate tensions that arise from different organizational processes, they often fail to meet longer-term learning objectives, detrimentally affecting build quality over time. Without structural changes to the way volume housebuilders annually report to both the UK Government and their shareholders, organizations in the UK housebuilding sector face challenges in reconciling different learning processes. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to be a public health concern, with important impacts on individuals' mental health. Many people have experienced significant changes to their daily routines due to the pandemic and for some, returning to pre-pandemic routines could create elevated stress. The present study explored factors associated with stress about returning to pre-pandemic routines (SRPR). A web-based, cross-sectional survey of 1,001 Canadian adults aged 18 years and older was conducted on July 9–13, 2021. SRPR was assessed by asking the respondents how much stress they have been feeling about returning to their pre-pandemic routines. Sociodemographic variables, anxiety, depression, loneliness, and COVID-19-related worry were examined in relation to SRPR. Overall, 28.8% of respondents reported moderate to extreme SRPR. After adjusting for covariates, factors associated with elevated SRPR included: younger age (AOR = 2.29, 95%CI 1.30–4.03), higher education (AOR = 2.08, 95%CI 1.14–3.79), being very worried about getting COVID-19 (AOR = 4.14, 95%CI 2.46–6.95), switching to working from home (AOR = 2.43, 95%CI 1.44–4.11), having anxiety (AOR = 5.02, 95%CI 3.19–7.89), feeling depressed (AOR = 1.93, 95%CI 1.14–3.25), and feeling lonely (AOR = 1.74, 95%CI 1.07–2.83). The findings of this study suggest that individuals experiencing mental health concerns (anxiety, feeling depressed, feeling lonely) may be especially likely to feel elevated SRPR and may therefore need additional support in making the transition back to prior routines. This article examines the tensions in Turkish–Israeli relations during the 2010s as well as prospects and challenges of normalisation from an ontological security perspective. Emphasising the role of conflicts in the provision of ontological security, it illustrates how frictions with Israel and attachment to the Palestinian issue serve the identity needs of Turkey's political elites and provides additional avenues for responding to legitimacy challenges. The article suggests that comprehensive normalisation of relations remains elusive and uncertain despite recent positive steps as this may engender ontological insecurity for both countries and can lead to a backlash towards hostile identities. Following a field disaster, organizations must be able to adapt to complicated new requirements like improved safety standards by changing their existing routines. Post-disaster, fewer deviations attributed to internal factors are expected and seen as evidence of adaptation. Using a difference-in-differences approach with data on nuclear power plants (NPPs) in 33 countries from 1976 to 2004, this study finds that, contrary to expectations, operational deviations attributed to human factors at NPPs increased globally for a long period after the Chernobyl disaster. This study argues that this counterintuitive performance is a manifestation of adaptive routines. To adapt to the environmental requirements for heightened safety standards, organizations may tend to alter their routines for attributing deviation causes by facilitating and transparently reporting the classification of more deviation causes as internal factors. These arguments extend organizational adaptation theory by suggesting that explicit performance does not necessarily manifest as adaptive routines because of the potential conflict between explicit and implicit performance dimensions in the context of complicated adaptation goals. BackgroundAn increase in child screen time has been observed throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Home environment and parenting practices have been associated with child screen time. The purpose of this study was to examine associations between parental use of routines, limit setting, and child screen time during the (COVID-19) pandemic to inform harm-reducing strategies to limit the potential harms ensued by excessive screen use.MethodsA cohort study was conducted in 700 healthy children (3,628 observations) aged 0–11 years though the TARGet Kids! BackgroundBedtime routines are amongst the most common, recurrent family activities with close associations for child health, development and wellbeing especially sleep. Despite the importance of bedtime routines, no previous study has examined them within the context of a Greek family.MethodA mixed methods, stepped approach was used in this study. A cross-sectional study examined the prevalence and characteristics of bedtime routines (PRE) in families with young children and explored associations with parental mood (POMS) and child's sleep (CSHQ). A qualitative study using the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) examined barriers and facilitators for achieving optimal routines.ResultsTotal of 54 parents with a mean age of 35.9 (SD = 5.95) completed the cross-sectional study while 20 parents participated in the interviews. There were strong positive correlations between total scores on the POMS and total scores on the CSHQ r = 0.482, p < 0.001 and strong negative correlation between total scores on the POMS and total scores on the PRE, r = −0.308, p = 0.023. In terms of barriers and facilitators, social desirability, social comparison, environmental factors and resistance from children were amongst the most common barriers to establishing a good bedtime routine.ConclusionBedtime routines are highly prevalent in Greek families with the quality of those routines varying between households. Addressing common barriers in achieving better bedtime routines could help families benefit in the short and long-term.

In this paper, we present a contrastive pragmatic analysis of Small Talk in English and Chinese. We use a radically minimal, finite and interactional system of speech acts to study DCTs conducted with U.S. American native speakers of English and native speakers of Chinese. Our analysis points to a number of important differences between Small Talk in the two linguacultures contrasted, such as a reliance on routines in English Small Talk, and an overall reliance on the speech act Remark in Chinese. The influence of the classic sociolinguistic variables Power and Social Distance for the enactment of Small Talk is also shown to be different in English and Chinese. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines the dynamics of crime governance and social mobilization in Brazil's impoverished communities to answer why residents of favelas mobilize against state interventions while seemingly accepting the rule of organized criminal groups (OCGs). Previous studies have primarily explored the materialistic hypothesis or the role of coercion and fear in shaping community behavior. This article employs the tools provided by the literature on contentious politics and a qualitative meta-analysis to systematically assess the varied ways in which OCGs interact with the state and favela residents, mapping the heterogeneous effects produced as a result. The findings suggest that in favelas where criminal organizations are perceived as benign, residents may rely on them to fulfill basic needs, while the state is seen as an outsider that brings disruption of routines and violence. There is an impressive literature on organizational capacities that enable specific types of performance, but no work has been done on whether such capabilities extend to an organizational capacity for trustworthiness (CFT). This paper introduces the notion of a capacity for trustworthiness (CFT) defined as the collective capability of the organization to produce positive signals of trustworthiness to stakeholders. The antecedents to the CFT are bundles of organization routines that enable the firm to manifest trustworthiness and balance attending to both financial and relational goals. The consequences of a high CFT are outcomes and behaviors that are congruent with pivotal stakeholder expectations and are, therefore, trust inducing. A process model is offered that outlines how an organization's routines and CFT change in response to feedback and pressure and increase or decrease stakeholders' trust. Violence, natural disasters, and other unsettling information can be traumatic for young children to experience through exposure to media that is not developmentally appropriate. The broad nature of media use in a child's life is a crucial consideration for their social emotional development. Advancing technology and expanding media usage pervades all aspects of modern life while understanding of the impact of media on growth and development in young children may be unclear. How do we talk to children about what they see in the media? This article explores ways to support children's social emotional development when they experience exposure to media in the early years. We provide information about considerations for media with regard to young children, concerns of media production for children, and guidance for children on traumatic events in media. The limited overlap between supply chain management (SCM) and entrepreneurship is concerning because SCM issues may be crucial to an entrepreneurial firm developing into a long-term entity and providing ongoing employment. This paper aims to establish the need to focus on SCM within entrepreneurship and to encourage supply chain researchers to consider the entrepreneurial phase of a firm's lifecycle as an essential area of inquiry. Collective workplaces – such as coworking spaces, open workplan offices, maker spaces, or fab labs – are founded on one central premise: working alongside others leads to interactions, collaborations and access to 'buzzing' knowledge. Yet, at the same time, users of these places go there to do their (often freelance) work, requiring a productive, and therefore usually quiet, work environment. Drawing on interviews and ethnographic fieldwork in the Netherlands, this research explores how users of collective workplaces navigate the coworking paradox: the need for quiet workplaces and the desire for social interaction. The paper deals with conventionalised emotive formulas for the expression of outrage, annoyance, astonishment and surprise. The empirical basis consists of emotive formulas from the dialogue passages in the detective novel ‚Im Wald' by Nele Neuhaus and in its translation into Polish by Anna Urban and Miłosz Urban. The following paper focuses on two research questions: 1) What formulas are used to signal emotions such as outrage, annoyance, astonishment and surprise in dialogues in the literary text in German? 2) How are these formulas translated into Polish? Thus, the aim of the paper is, first of all, to collect emotive formulas expressing the mentioned emotions and to present the problems in their translation. District central offices are increasingly partnering with external organizations, such as professional development providers, to facilitate instructional improvement. Given the highly interdependent nature of partnership work, partners often need to coordinate their work together. We define coordination as how partners align different actions so that actions work in concert to support shared tasks. Despite the importance of coordination, existing research says little about how partners coordinate their work together and the implications for their change efforts. Drawing on theory on organizational routines, we conducted a case study of a district central office partnership using interviews, observations, and an artifact analysis. We found that partners aimed to coordinate their routinized work together through two key mechanisms: connections between routines and opportunities for collective reflection. How these coordination mechanisms interacted mattered for whether partners enacted coordinated change. We close with implications for research and practice. Embedded learning opportunities (ELOs) are evidence-based practices that can increase the number of teaching and learning opportunities made available to children in their natural routines. Implementing ELOs is the optimal approach for parents in supporting their children's learning within the family's routines. This study assessed the feasibility of parents supporting their young children's learning through ELO interventions. Two case studies were conducted, each of which involved a parent–child dyad. One child had been identified as having autism, and the other had been identified as having developmental delays. Each case study employed an independent single-case multiple-probe design and assessed the effect of training on the implementation of ELO interventions by the mother in home routines as well as the effects of the interventions on the parents' and children's behaviours. The mothers implemented each ELO strategy for each target goal in three steps. The results revealed that both mothers learned to use ELO strategies, and their children made improvements toward their target goals. Implications for future research and practice, as well as professionals' roles in supporting families with young children with disabilities, are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vocabulary knowledge provides a critical foundation for later reading comprehension. Children with limited vocabularies and background knowledge often need many opportunities to learn a new word. One effective way to promote vocabulary acquisition for young children is to provide opportunities for children to learn new words throughout classroom routines. Activity-Based Intervention, an early childhood teaching approach, can be used as a framework for planning and implementing vocabulary instruction across planned, child-directed, and routine activities like science and math activities, free play during center time, and mealtimes. By using these underutilized times of the day for instruction, and by adapting instructional strategies and words taught to meet the needs of individual learners, early childhood educators can provide rich vocabulary instruction to all young children. Journalists in democratically "free" countries have faced harassment from those external to the newsroom for decades, though that has recently increased in the United States by many accounts. To assess the effects of such harassment in the United States, 32 journalists were interviewed and more than 500 surveyed about their experiences with harassment, and how it has affected their professional work. Journalists' emotions, gender, and the frequency at which they experience harassment were predictors of affect-driven work behaviors such as avoiding interviewing someone, being less active on social media, and even considering leaving journalism. Younger journalists were also more likely to engage in affect-driven work behaviors. Harassment also affected journalists' work attitude of job satisfaction—specifically incivility and disruptive harassment. This type of harassment is likely to decrease job satisfaction while supervisor support and larger organizational size are likely to increase satisfaction. In sum, harassment from viewers, readers, and strangers affects how journalists act and think about their work. This research adds to literature on Affective Events Theory by highlighting harassment from organizational outsiders (readers, viewers, and strangers) as an affective event with significant affect-driven behaviors and attitudes. Background: To examine the relationship between attributes of early childhood education and care (ECEC) settings and children's physical activity and sedentary behavior. Methods: Cross-sectional study involving 490 children aged 2–5 years from 11 ECECs. The ECEC routine, size of the outdoor environment, and time spent in the outdoor environment were calculated for each center. Children's physical activity and sedentary time were measured using accelerometers. Multivariate linear regressions were used to examine associations of the attributes of ECEC centers with the outcome variables, adjusting for the effects of center clustering and gender. Results: Children in ECECs that offered free routines (where children can move freely between indoor and outdoor environments) had lower levels of sedentary time (28.27 min/h vs 33.15 min/h; P =.001) and spent more time in total physical activity (7.99 min/h vs 6.57 min/h; P =.008) and moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity (9.49 min/h vs 7.31 min/h; P =.008). Children in ECECs with an outdoor environment >400 m2 had less sedentary time (28.94 min/h vs 32.42 min/h; P =.012) than those with areas <400 m2. Conclusion: Modifiable practices such as offering a free routine and increasing time spent in outdoor environments could potentially offer an easy and sustainable way for ECEC centers to promote physical activity and reduce sedentary time among children. This article examines the dynamics of crime governance and social mobilization in Brazil’s impoverished communities to answer why residents of favelas mobilize against state interventions while seemingly accepting the rule of organized criminal groups (OCGs). Previous studies have primarily explored the materialistic hypothesis or the role of coercion and fear in shaping community behavior. This article employs the tools provided by the literature on contentious politics and a qualitative meta-analysis to systematically assess the varied ways in which OCGs interact with the state and favela residents, mapping the heterogeneous effects produced as a result. The findings suggest that in favelas where criminal organizations are perceived as benign, residents may rely on them to fulfill basic needs, while the state is seen as an outsider that brings disruption of routines and violence. In favelas where criminal organizations are malign, there are few incentives for change as the outcomes of challenging OCGs are uncertain.

Many mergers and acquisitions (M&A) fail to achieve anticipated synergistic benefits. The combination of resources and processes is particularly difficult. This paper uses a routine dynamics perspective to study an acquisition in the consultancy sector where the strategy of combining two routines, designed to commercialize a new offer, failed. Zooming in on the micro dynamics of synergy realization, we show how the envisioned design was challenged only once the combined routine was enacted. The joint performance of the routine revealed incompatibilities at three levels: within the combined routine; with adjacent routines; and across the merging organizations. We identify two mechanisms that drive these incompatibilities: conflicting actors' intentions and conflicting organizational norms. We discuss how synergy realization requires both the converging of intentions and norms and the interweaving of actions, routines, and organizations. Our paper contributes to M&A research by challenging the notion of "fit" as a prerequisite for success and by developing the notion of "fitting" as an unfolding process, i.e., through a design–action loop in which sources of incompatibilities are revealed and adjusted. We elucidate the dynamic and iterative nature of synergy realization and argue for a rethinking of pre- and post-acquisition periods as fundamentally interlinked. We also contribute to research on routine dynamics by enhancing the understanding of routine interdependencies and the intentionality of routines in cross-organizational settings. This mini review aims at summarizing the current state-of-the-art of empirical unlearning and intentional forgetting (U/IF) research at the individual, team, and organizational level. It adds to an earlier review and incorporates 31 recent studies from 2019 to 2022. The review reveals that predictors based on the organization's adaptation context (e.g., competitive intensity), organization level (e.g., leadership exploration activities), individual task-related (e.g., features of the routines changed), and person-related level (e.g., cognitive control strategies) variables relate to process variables, such as the type of U/IF, the U/IF content (e.g., success beliefs or failure beliefs), and information processing variables (e.g., team information processing). The outcome variables are at the organizational level (e.g., cross-boundary innovation), team level performance level, the individual task performance level (e.g., errors), and person-related level (e.g., self-esteem). The analyzed studies at the team and organizational levels preferred crosssectional study designs or in-depth qualitative methods, which severely limits the possibility of making causal statements. In contrast, at the individual-level studies use longitudinal designs as well to make temporal aspects of U/IF visible. But these individual level results are limited in terms of their generalizability to other levels. Even though all studies make valuable contribution to the understanding of antecedents and outcomes of U/IF, the temporal and process-related aspects of how U/IF unfolds at the different levels and subsequent options for its deliberate facilitation remain empirically little elaborated. It is proposed that in addition to studying the antecedents and consequences of U/IF in cross sectional designs, the topic needs more longitudinal designs to capture the nature of the U/IF processes in organizations. The aim of this study was to describe and compare routines and behaviors in a sample of children from three countries during the mandatory quarantine of the COVID-19 pandemic and to analyze their connections to anxiety. A total of 335 children aged 3 to 7 years from Spain, Argentina and the United States participated in the study. The instruments used were the Routine and Behavior Scale (RBS) and the Preschool Anxiety Scale (PAS). Using network sampling through online questionnaires in Spanish and English, the results showed differences in routines and behaviors patterns in participants from countries under confinement, as well as higher anxiety scores. The negative repercussions of confinement may affect a child’s welfare. It is therefore necessary to carry out cross-cultural studies in order to enable the early detection of psychopathological symptoms and promote prevention and intervention programs. This paper analyses the effort sounds made by caregivers in routine interactions with very young infants. Video recordings were made of 15 mother-infant dyads in Germany during nappy changing. The multimodal analysis of the interactions revealed that effort sounds were used when handling the infant's body, such as dressing them or lifting them up, but also made to link to the sensations of the infant. The sounds achieved their meaning within sequences of actions and contextualised via temporality, phonetic variation and multimodality. With these vocalisations, I propose, parents can give infants' sensations a voice, make them public, and thus achieve a co-ordination of experience. • Effort sounds are social and used to coordinate caregiver-infant routine activities. • Effort sounds foreground aspects of the sensory experiences of both caregiver and infant. • Effort sounds are flexible sound objects that are modulated by temporality, phonetic variation and multimodality. • Effort sounds are used to sound out actions for and on behalf of the infant. People feel that their lives are more meaningful while engaging in behaviors more closely aligned with their routines. Does the behavioral content of these routines and the contextual factors surrounding their enactment matter for this relationship? In two experience sampling studies (N = 93, 1,512 episodes; N = 97, 1,629 episodes), we test whether the relationship between routines and meaning in life (MIL) depends on the content of the activities. We found that the degree to which one's current activity is a routine positively related to momentary MIL beyond other meaningful features (e.g., relationships, goals, prosociality) of that activity. We conducted Study 2 in the context of mass routine disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic. We found even stronger relationships between routine enactment and concurrent MIL in this context which held controlling for factors, including perceived chaos, mood, and anxiety. This is a joint work of two labs that offers a perspective ondevelopment and learning, which complements theconference’s focus on “changes in representation andprocessing abilities in development”. Strong background inecological psychology allowed us to recognize the richnessand multilayered structuring of infants’ environment, whichactively engages them and to which infants tune their action-perception. We conceptualize this environment as reliable“social physics”, constituted of predictable, enacted socialevents, in which infants learn to participate. Using bothtraditional (qualitative and quantitative) and dynamicalsystems methods, we show the structuring of such events onmultiple timescales and levels and how participating in themsculpts the child’s agency in the social world. We show howthis background allows a fresh look on language acquisitionand how it informs computational modelling of languageemergence and models of human-robot interaction.

Abstract Background In the past decades, the incidence of obesity has increased worldwide. This disease is often accompanied with several comorbidities and therefore, surgeons and anesthesiologists should be prepared to provide optimal management for these patients. The aim of this descriptive cross-sectional study was to map the criteria and routines that are used by Swedish knee arthroplasty surgeons today when considering patients with obesity for knee arthroplasty. Methods A survey including 21 items was created and sent to all the Swedish centers performing knee arthroplasty. The survey included questions about the surgeons’ experience, hospital routines of preoperative information given and the surgeons’ individual assessment of patients with obesity that candidates for knee arthroplasty. Descriptive statistics were used to present the data. Results A total of 203 (64%) knee surgeons responded to the questionnaire. Almost 90% of the surgeons claimed to inform their patients with obesity that obesity has been associated with an increased risk of complications after knee arthroplasty. Seventy-nine percent reported that they had an upper BMI limit to perform knee arthroplasty, a larger proportion of the private centers had a BMI limit compared to public centers. The majority of the centers had an upper BMI limit of 35. Conclusion The majority of the knee arthroplasty surgeons in Sweden inform their patients with obesity regarding risks associated with knee arthroplasty. Most centers that perform knee arthroplasties in Sweden have an upper BMI limit.

Young adulthood is characterized by important life transitions (e.g., college, employment, relocation, marriage), where time management skills and routines help promote positive adjustment. Routines are observable, repetitive behavior that are context specific and automate aspects of daily life (e.g., personal hygiene, health, occupational, academic). Although measures of routines exist for children, adolescents, and older adults, similar measures assessing young adult routines are lacking. The purpose of this study was to develop and initially validate The Young Adult Routines Inventory (YARI). Analyses revealed a four-factor measure reflecting daily routines, social routines, time management, and procrastination. The YARI demonstrates good internal consistency, construct, and convergent validity, and was positively correlated with measures of emotional well-being and perceived life satisfaction. The YARI was negatively correlated with self-reported symptoms of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and successfully distinguished individuals with and without ADHD symptomatology. In workplace settings, skilled participants cooperate on the basis of shared routines in smooth and often implicit ways. Our study shows how interactional histories provide the basis for routine coordination. We draw on theater rehearsals as a perspicuous setting for tracking interactional histories. In theater rehearsals, the process of building performing routines is in focus. Our study builds on collections of consecutive performances of the same instructional task coming from a corpus of video-recordings of 30 h of theater rehearsals of professional actors in German. Over time, instructions and their implementations are routinely coordinated by virtue of accumulated shared interactional experience: Instructions become shorter, the timing of responses becomes increasingly compacted and long negotiations are reduced to a two-part sequence of instruction and implementation. Overall, a routine of how to perform the scene emerges. Over interactional histories, patterns of projection of next actions emanating from instructions become reliable and can be used by respondents as sources for anticipating and performing relevant next actions. The study contributes to our understanding of how shared knowledge and routines accumulate over shared interactional experiences in publicly performed and reciprocally perceived ways and how this impinges on the efficiency of joint action. This study examined if inconsistent bedtime routines are a mechanism through which high levels of parenting stress are related to bedtime resistant behaviors. Bedtime resistant behavior is a common problem in young children. Although previous studies have linked parenting stress to problematic behaviors at bedtime, understanding how and why that may be has been subject to limited empirical investigation. Caregivers (N = 118) of a child age 2–5 were recruited on Amazon's mechanical turk. There was a significant indirect effect of parenting stress on bedtime resistance through bedtime routines as well as a significant indirect effect of bedtime routines on bedtime resistant behavior through parenting stress. These findings suggest that there is a bidirectional relationship between inconsistent routines and parenting stress. Clinically, these results suggest that implementing a consistent routine at bedtime may improve both parent (less stress) and child (less bedtime resistance) functioning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Approximately one in five people will live to see their 100th birthday due to advancements in modern medicine and other factors. Over 65's constitute 42% of elective admissions and 43% of emergency admissions to hospitals. Increasingly, people are turning to technology to help improve health and care of the elderly. There is mixed evidence of the success of wearables in older populations with a key barrier being adoption. In contrast, passive sensors such as infra-red motion and plug sensors have had more success. These passive sensors give us a sequence of categorical "trigger" events throughout the day. This paper proposes a method for detecting subtle changes in sequences while taking account of the natural day-to-day variability and differing numbers of "trigger" events per day.
