Purpose: To evaluate efficacy and safety of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and microwave ablation (MWA) in unresectable lung malignancies. Methods: Data regarding patients with primary and secondary lung tumors treated with RFA or MWA from 2008 to 2020 were reviewed retrospectively. Primary study objectives such as technical success, primary and secondary technique efficacy rates, local tumor progression (LTP) rate, LPT-free survival (LPTFS) and overall survival (OS) were assessed. Secondary study objectives were side effects and complications. RFA and MWA were compared using the Chi-square test for continuous variables. Kaplan–Meier curves were calculated for survival statistical analysis. Results: A total of 113 patients with primary or secondary lung tumor underwent 74 RFA (48%) and 81 MWA (52%). Technical success rate was 151/155 (97%); primary and secondary technique efficacy rates were 123/155 (79%) and 129/155 (83%), respectively. During the entire study follow-up, 32 cases experienced disease progression (20%), of which 18 underwent repeat ablation (12%), in 6 cases with success (4%). Residual unablated tumor happened in 4/155 cases (3%). LTP occurred in 28/155 cases (17%). The only factor associated with poorer LTP-FS was lesion diameter ≥ 30 mm (P < 0.05). One-, 3- and 5-years LTP-FS was 83%, 82%, 82%, respectively. One-, 3- and 5-years OS of the entire population was 87%, 74%, 73%, respectively. Minor and major complication rates were 53/155 (34%) and 29/155 (19%), respectively. Conclusions: In conclusion, this study confirms the appropriateness of RFA and MWA for lung tumors treatment, in terms of safety and efficacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

En este artículo se estudian diferentes conflictos territoriales entre comerciantes árabes y colindantes indígenas, criollos e inmigrantes en el noroeste del territorio nacional de Chubut durante la primera mitad del siglo XX. Se realiza un seguimiento de distintos casos a partir de documentos que produjeron la Dirección Nacional de Tierras y la Gobernación del Chubut, y se avanza en generalizaciones que permiten discutir los discursos que han simplificado los procesos de apropiación de tierras. A partir de los diferentes casos se propone revisar las periodizaciones historiográficas usuales sobre el inicio de los cercamientos y los conflictos territoriales que protagonizaron los inmigrantes sirio-libaneses. Se argumenta que los comerciantes árabes, al introducir alambrados, quebraron un ordenamiento territorial previo basado en ocupaciones que no estaban delimitadas y que generalmente se regulaban mediante acuerdos vecinales. La reconstrucción historiográfica muestra que los bolicheros sirio-libaneses lograron mantener y ampliar sus cercamientos después de extensos procedimientos administrativos, al mismo tiempo que impusieron gradualmente un nuevo orden signado por la apropiación privada de la tierra.

Entre 1880 y 1930, Colombia recibió un número significativo de inmigrantes procedentes de Siria y Líbano, quienes, a través de distintas actividades empresariales, terminaron siendo parte de la élite económica de varias ciudades colombianas. En este artículo estudio ese proceso de consolidación económica, haciendo énfasis en las prácticas económicas ilegales en las que incurrieron algunos de los inmigrantes siriolibaneses que se establecieron en el circuito comercial existente entre la provincia del Sinú, Cartagena y el Atrato. Argumento que actividades como la falsificación de monedas, el contrabando y el acaparamiento de tierras intervinieron en el proceso de acumulación de capital y de consolidación económica que algunos de estos inmigrantes lograron.

This Letter reports on the testing and assessment of an optical computed tomography-navigation system for percutaneous lung interventional, SIRIO, showing how the lesion diameter affects the bioptic procedure. Clinical data, relating to 501 patients, were collected at the Department of Interventional Radiology of Policlinico Universitario Campus Bio-Medico. This Letter shows that the diameter of lesion affects only the procedure duration (50.91 ± 18.87 min for lesions of diameter ≤20 mm and 44.98 ± 19.43 min for lesions of diameter >20 and ≤40 mm). For the nodules with a diameter ≤20 mm, there is a significant increase in the duration of the procedure (for each mm less the time increases by 6 s). Other parameters like the mean effective radiation dose and the presence of a diagnostic or non-diagnostic specimen do not depend, instead, on the lesion size. The economic analysis based on the biopsy procedure with SIRIO shows the necessity to adopt a new reimbursement system for percutaneous biopsy performed using navigation systems to stimulate their use to get important non-economic gains such as early diagnosis, reduction of the absorbed dose of X-rays and increasing number of lung cancers in a curable early stage.

A model for the statistical prediction of fade durations, applicable both to scintillation and rain-induced effects, is presented in this paper. It assumes that durations longer than about 1 minute are lognormally distributed whereas shorter durations follow a power-law distribution. The model is assessed using data contained in the CCIR data bank and from measurements performed with the SIRIO and Olympus satellites. The model is tested using the same data, and the results give multiplicative errors in the range from 0.6 to 1.8 (averages) and from 0.3 to 3.0 (r.m.s.) in the estimation of the fade durations exceeded for fixed probability.
