Given the improvements to network flexibility and programmability, software-defined wireless sensor networks (SDWSNs) have been paired with IEEE 802.15.4e time-slotted channel hopping (TSCH) to increase network efficiency through slicing. Nonetheless, ensuring the quality of service (QoS) level in a scalable SDWSN remains a significant difficulty. To solve this issue, we introduce the application-aware (AA) scheduling approach, which isolates different traffic types and adapts to QoS requirements dynamically. To the best of our knowledge, this approach is the first to support network scalability using shared timeslots without the use of additional hardware while maintaining the application's QoS level. The AA approach is deeply evaluated compared with both the application traffic isolation (ATI) approach and the application's QoS requirements using the IT-SDN framework and by varying the number of nodes up to 225. The evaluation process took into account up to four applications with varying QoS requirements in terms of delivery rate and delay. In comparison with the ATI approach, the proposed approach enhanced the delivery rate by up to 28% and decreased the delay by up to 57%. Furthermore, even with four applications running concurrently, the AA approach proved capable of meeting a 92% delivery rate requirement for up to 225 nodes and a 900 ms delay requirement for up to 144 nodes. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are becoming increasingly prevalent in numerous fields. Industrial applications and natural-disaster-detection systems need fast and reliable data transmission, and in several cases, they need to be able to cope with changing traffic conditions. Thus, time-slotted channel hopping (TSCH) offers high reliability and efficient power management at the medium access control (MAC) level; TSCH considers two dimensions, time and frequency when allocating communication resources. However, the scheduler, which decides where in time and frequency these communication resources are allotted, is not part of the standard. Orchestra has been proposed as a scheduler which allocates the communication resources based on information collected through the IPv6 routing protocol for low-power and lossy networks (RPL). Orchestra is a very elegant solution, but does not adapt to high traffic. This research aims to build an Orchestra-based scheduler for applications with unpredictable traffic bursts. The implemented scheduler allocates resources based on traffic congestion measured for the children of the root and RPL subtree size of the same nodes. The performance analysis of the proposed scheduler shows lower latency and higher packet delivery ratio (PDR) compared to Orchestra during bursts, with negligible impact outside them. Wireless communication has become the promising technology in the recent times because of its applications in Internet of Things( IoT) devices. The IEEE 802.15.4e has become the key technology for IoT devices which utilizes the Time-Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) networks for the communication between the devices. In this paper, we develop a Two Level Scheduling Algorithm (TLSA) for scheduling multiple packets with different arrival rate at the source nodes in a TSCH networks based on the link activated by a centralized scheduler. TLSA is developed by considering three types of links in a network such as link i with packets arrival type 1, link j with packets arrival type 2, link k with packets arrival type 3. For the data packets arrival, two stages in a network is considered.At the first stage, the packets are considered to be of higher priority.At the second stage, the packets are considered to be of lower priority.We introduce level 1 schedule for the packets at stage 1 and level 2 schedule for the packets at stage 2 respectively. Finally, the TLSA is validated with the two different energy functions i.e., y =eax = 1 and y = 0.5x² using MATLAB 2017a software for the computation of average and worst ratios of the two levels. The recent increase of connected devices has triggered countless Internet-of-Things applications to emerge. By using the Time-Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) mode of the IEEE 802.15.4e MAC layer, wireless multi-hop networks enable highly reliable and low-power communication, supporting mission-critical and industrial applications. TSCH uses channel hopping to avoid both external interference and multi-path fading, and a synchronization-based schedule which allows precise bandwidth allocation. Efficient schedule management is crucial when minimizing the delay of a packet to reach its destination. In networks with recurrent sensor data transmissions that repeat after a certain period, current scheduling functions are prone to high latencies by ignoring this recurrent behavior. In this article, we propose a TSCH scheduling function that tackles this minimal-latency recurrent traffic problem. Concretely, this work presents two novel contributions. First, the recurrent traffic problem is defined formally as an Integer Linear Program. Second, we propose the Recurrent Low-Latency Scheduling Function (ReSF) that reserves minimal-latency paths from source to sink and only activates these paths when recurrent traffic is expected. Extensive experimental results show that using ReSF leads to a latency improvement up to 80% compared to state-of-the-art low-latency scheduling functions, with a negligible impact on power consumption of at most 6%. Past technologies, such as ZigBee, rooted in IEEE 802.15.4, and ISO 18000-7, rooted in frame-slotted ALOHA (FSA), are based on contention medium access control (MAC) layers and have very poor performance in dense networks, thus preventing the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm from really taking off. Industrial sensing applications, such as those being deployed in oil refineries, have stringent requirements on data reliability and are being built using new standards. Despite the benefits of these new technologies, industrial shifts are not happening due to the enormous technology development and adoption costs and the fact that new standards are not well-known and completely understood. In this article, we provide a deep analysis of TSCH and D7AM, outlining operational and implementation details with the aim of facilitating the adoption of these technologies to sensor application developers.

To provide wireless coverage in challenging industrial environments, IEEE802.15.4 Time-Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) presents a robust medium access protocol. Using multiple Physical Layers (PHYs) could improve TSCH even more in these heterogeneous environments. However, TSCH only defines one fixed-duration timeslot structure allowing one packet transmission. Using multiple PHYs with various data rates therefore does not yield any improvements because of this single-packet limitation combined with a fixed slot duration. We therefore defined two alternative timeslot structures allowing multiple packets transmissions to increase the throughput for higher data rate PHYs while meeting a fixed slot duration. In addition, we developed a flexible Link Quality Estimation (LQE) technique to dynamically switch between PHYs depending on the current environment. This paper covers a theoretical evaluation of the proposed slot structures in terms of throughput, energy consumption and memory constraints backed with an experimental validation, using a proof-of-concept implementation, which includes topology and PHY switching. Our results show that a 153 % higher net throughput can be obtained with 84 % of the original energy consumption and confirm our theoretical evaluation with a 99 % accuracy. Additionally, we showed that in a real-life testbed of 33 nodes, spanning three floors and covering 2550 m2, a compact multi-PHY TSCH network can be formed. By distinguishing between reliable and high throughput PHYs, a maximum hop count of three was achieved with a maximum throughput of 219 kbps. Consequently, using multiple (dynamic) PHYs in a single TSCH network is possible while still being backwards compatible to the original fixed slot duration TSCH standard. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
