Urban flora is a more and more interesting research subject, in light of the ongoing environmental change and biological homogenisation, since urban contexts are much more diversified that natural ones and, therefore, they offer much more colonisation possibilities to allochthonous species or unexpected refuges for endangered species. We have, therefore, added our own contribution by analysing the spontaneous vascular flora of 7 cities of the Emilia-Romagna Po Plain (northern Italy), one of the more culturally and economically developed areas in Europe. The global floristic list was 1305 species, spanning from 432 to 756 species in each individual city; 219 of them were constantly present in all cities examined. A notable richness in phytosociological classes (43 out of 75 known for the entire national territory) was observed. Therophytes were 35.4% of the spectrum, followed by hemicryptophytes, phanerophytes and geophytes. Eurasian and Mediterranean species dominated (average values 30 and 27%, respectively); exotic species were 26.8%, in line with the strong floristic pollution of Emilia-Romagna, with neophytes always prevailing over archaeophytes. Among neophytes, 44.8% came from the Americas and 26.2% from Asia. Some hydro-hygrophilous and halophilous species were found, owing to the presence of watercourses crossing the urban areas and coastal wetlands bordering one of the towns. The species new for the flora of Italy or Emilia-Romagna were 32, of which 24 were allochthonous. The species protected at a regional or national level were hardly present, which is normal in artificial environments. Despite the inevitable differences in exploration intensity and effort, this synthesis offers a picture of the contribution given by anthropogenic habitats to the global biological richness of the territory. AbstractEthiopia’s Integrated Housing Development Programme (IHDP) is among the most ambitious housing programmes in Africa, producing over 300,000 relatively low-cost condominiums. This article considers why, despite bolstering property ownership and achieving moderate success in relation to some of its aims, the IHDP largely failed to address challenges of homeownership and tenure security. We draw on primary research to analyse three elements of this failure. First, although the programme did generate property ownership, many recipients could not afford the loan repayments and had to move out, displacing them from their property and generating a rapidly-inflating rental market that undermined housing affordability. Second, measures to ensure the housing is ‘low cost’ compromised living conditions, impeding ‘ontological security’ and a secure sense of home for many renters and owner-occupiers. Third, the tenure security of other communities on the urban fringe was sacrificed as the programme expanded into the periphery. Overall, the IHDP illustrates how problematic it is to combine the affordability and value-creation functions of state housing. Contributing to wider debates on property ownership and tenure security, we suggest that efforts to boost the former can actually undermine homeownership, as well as creating new forms of insecurity for renters and homeowners alike. Peri-urban landscapes are transitional areas between urban and rural areas that are constantly changing. They are characterised by land use mixes and land cover changes, leading to significant changes in wildlife habitats. These changes, combined with an increasing anthropogenic presence, turn peri-urban landscapes into arenas of intensified human-wildlife interactions. In many scientifically documented cases, scientists are focusing on negative interactions. Furthermore, research about appropriate policy instruments for managing human-wildlife interactions is rare. This study focused on case studies and their characteristics from around the world on positive, neutral, or negative interactions between humans and wildlife at local level. In addition, influencing factors of human-wildlife interactions and policy instruments for managing human-wildlife interactions in peri-urban landscapes were addressed. A survey was conducted with an international group of scientists and practitioners working in this field. The results showed that various species were involved in human-wildlife interactions in peri-urban landscapes worldwide, with mammals as being the most common taxon. Contemporary changes in land use and land cover could be identified as a significant factor for increasing human-wildlife interactions in peri-urban landscapes. It can be highlighted that a policy mix consisting mainly of social and cultural instruments in combination with legal and regulatory instruments could be most suitable to address this situation. This article explores the assimilation of second-generation migrants from the Former Soviet Union (FSU) who grew up in Israel's social and geographic urban periphery. Their upbringing in peripheral towns and neighborhoods exposed them almost exclusively to Mizrahim (Oriental Jews), a stigmatized minority group whose members make up the overwhelming majority in those locations. We argue that their interaction with members of this group resulted in an alternative process of assimilation, which we term Hitmazrehut (Orientalization). Children of migrants, who were unaware of the historical stigmatization of Mizrahim and their culture, conceived of Hitmazrehut as their only viable trajectory of assimilation into what they erroneously perceived as the Israeli mainstream. However, embracing Mizrahi socio-cultural practices, including consumption and production of ethnic culture, religious traditions and romantic partnerships, did not lead to their downward assimilation, as the model predicts. Rather, it allowed second-generation Russian-speaking migrants to fit in and attain social and economic mobility by assimilating sidewards, into the growing Mizrahi middle-class. This article interrogates the role of urban peripheries in creating political imaginaries and understandings of citizenship among children and grandchildren of insurgent citizens in urban Northeast Brazil. The analysis draws on data collected through 10 ethnographically informed focus groups with youth between 18 and 35. The article argues that, contrary to beliefs that young people are apathetic about politics or enthusiastic to engage in progressive social movements, youth have an ambivalent relationship with the state, informed by everyday encounters with precarious infrastructure, awareness of previous forms of collective action that determines their civic engagement, and feelings of belonging to home communities. The article suggests revisiting the concept of insurgent citizenship considering new socio-political changes that framed the lives of young people living in urban peripheries in the past two decades in Brazil and proposes ambivalence as a productive theoretical angle to make sense of ruptures and discontinuities in political practices. The article presents a reflection on the social effects of the implementation of public policies, which can deepen and reproduce situations of previous social inequality even if their objectives aim to produce greater equity and social justice. In this sense, we sought to understand how the daily interactions established between residents of the urban periphery and the State agents responsible for implementing various public policies at the local level occur and what the results are. Empirical data were collected from participant observation and semi-structured interviews with seven residents of a housing complex built through the Minha Casa, Minha Vida Program (PMCMV), in Santa Cruz do Sul/RS, to serve low-income families. It was verified, based on the analysis of qualitative data collected in the research, that the encounter between the residents of this housing complex and the state institutions and their bureaucrats is marked by asymmetrical power relations that reinforce the residents' subordinate position and the stereotypes about of their behaviors and ways of life, contributing to the construction of a "sense of place" marked by negativity. The discussion on producing urban peripheries in Chile has focused on the capital. An understanding of this process is proposed for San Pedro de la Paz, a city in the Metropolitan Area of Concepción in the country's south. The hypothesis is that housing policy has been the most relevant actor in producing peripheral urbanisms. It is a territory where center-periphery relations are hybrid and strongly influenced by the relationship built with the landscape and nature. The methodology combined geographical analysis of land cover and use, documentary and normative analysis, and observation of different social housing complexes built at different times. The results show how the territory has historically been shaped as a peripheral and suburban area, which is consolidated by the action of the State, producing a diffuse space dominated by the values promoted by the middle classes. This paper emphasizes the significance of social infrastructure in understanding urban inequality. In addition to its economic opportunities, social infrastructure is one of the distinguishing characteristics of metropolitan areas. In cities of the 21st century, social infrastructure is not equally accessible to all residences. For the development and sustainability of urban life, social infrastructure is fundamental. In terms of establishing a sense of belonging and integration to contemporary urban life, social infrastructure is highly crucial especially for refugees and rural migrants who migrate to the periphery of big cities. By evaluating the findings of this study conducted in Esenler District, we aim to contribute to research dealing with urban inequalities in Istanbul from the perspective of social infrastructure. To fill a gap in the literature, the social infrastructure of the Esenler District, which consists of rural-to-urban migration, refugee flow, and the working class in Istanbul's periphery, was analyzed by comparing it to other districts. The database created from various data sources and satellite images is presented with thematic maps. According to the findings, there is a significant divide between the central and peripheral districts of Istanbul in terms of social infrastructure. This inequality manifests itself in four ways: education, health, recreation, and fuel for housing. First, there are serious problems, such as the limited number of kindergartens, the high-class size in primary schools, and the poor quality of high schools in front of Esenler, which has a low education level. Second, there are only six healthcare centers in Esenler, where health services are inadequate compared to the central districts. Third, the green space cannot meet the recreational needs of the dense population in the district where unplanned and intensive construction has left no free space. Due to limited purchasing power, natural gas usage in Esenler is fairly low compared to central districts, despite the dense population. On the basis of these indicators, it has been concluded that the Esenler District, lacks the essential social infrastructure services necessary to maintain the city's health. Therefore, strengthening the social infrastructure on the urban periphery is a primary concern for developing a better understanding of urban inequalities, preventing problems, and making livable urban environments. This article addresses the issue of developing designs of resilient hydrological infrastructures for cities facing sea level rise in the Anthropocene. It undertakes short case studies of differently scaled cities, three in the Global North and three in the Global South. The aim is to investigate the current water management situations in order to reveal potentials for increased urban and environmental resilience. Cities are approached as complex adaptive systems (CAS) negotiating uncertainty that concerns designing for resilience, understood as viable transitions for their interlinked social, ecological, and technological systems (SETS). The main finding is that, despite obvious differences, the six cases are surprisingly similar. Potentials for increased hydrological resilience reside in design approaches that work differently with what is currently deprivileged and considered 'merely' peripheral. Peripheral cities and the peripheries of coastal cities are found to be of key rather than minor adaptive infrastructural import. To reprivilege the peripheral here means to adopt more dynamically flexible, long-term, decentralized, and nonanthropocentric urban design approaches to water and infrastructures. Specifically, this article advocates thinking about water via at least four critical displacements. These displacements point toward alternatives concerning excessively static and land-based designs, short-term planning, overly anthropocentric conceptions of the city environment distinction, and undue centrism in planetary urbanization of the Global North and Global South. In conclusion, this article presents a brief outlook to other cases which suggest that greater resilience potentials are likely to be found in planning for the complexly ecotone city. This works mostly bottom-up from the local regimes for water sensitive infrastructures to regional network designs that can engage with larger climatic and ecological landscapes. 'Pedagogy of Precariousness': The Experiences of Young People in a Violence Prevention Project on the Outskirts of the Greater Vitória Metropolitan Area analyzes the experiences of young people in the Projeto Proteção de Jovens em Território Vulnerável (Protejo), implemented in 2019 in the Jardim Carapina neighborhood, on the outskirts of the Greater Vitória Metropolitan Area, Espírito Santo. Starting from a qualitative methodology, it was understood that the project, based on the premises of citizen security, aims to prevent violence that affects young people in urban peripheries through "social" actions and the promotion of citizenship. However, the participants' experiences indicate a long distance between the project's objectives and its practices, which was conceived in terms of a "pedagogy of precariousness". In Bengaluru, India's "IT capital," global capital and processes of world city‐making valorize specific kinds of work and workers as "formal" while categorizing others as "informal," "chaotic" and "unregulated." This article draws attention to the work of share‐auto rickshaw driving among local men from formerly farmland‐owning households in a rapidly urbanizing pocket in peripheral Bengaluru. Why do these drivers, whose work is situated outside of visions of world‐classness, engage in the practices that they do? How do processes of urbanization shape how they see and situate themselves and their work in the city? This article argues that the drivers construct themselves as urban laboring subjects through their deep ties with place. Their identity as "local" refers to new manifestations of their ties to agrarian land and life, their place‐based knowledge in providing transport services, their selfhood, and their logic of operation. Local is also a discursive strategy that differentiates their work from that of non‐locals (or "outsiders"), and situates their work as neither formal nor informal. In illuminating the experiences of urban transformation among members of this driving community, this article asserts that local is the drivers' way of co‐opting the urban present. Over the last decades Barcelona has experienced social and economic transformations brought by the conversion of peripheral urban neighborhoods into tourist attractions. In this sense urban tourism has been the latest chapter of spatial reorganization to sustain capitalism within the global neoliberal environment in the Catalan city. In addition, the urban commodification process has expanded into not only central and historical districts, but also more peripheral zones outside the tourist bubble. Those transformations signify a symbolic turn: they became part of the centre. Since the 1992 Olympic Games, Barcelona's brand, both for the city and for tourism, has experienced an important promotion where the urban periphery has become both part of the centre, as well as part of its global city imagery through placemaking, public policy, and political decisions. In short, the steady inclusion of neighborhoods such as Vila de Gràcia and Poblenou into the tourist experience enhances the Barcelonan tourist imagery. The inclusion of new cultural icons and tourist attractions embody a slight spatial and symbolic turn to boost the city's visitor activities. The article deals with the relationship between Pentecostalism and the urban periphery that constitute the ways of inhabiting the city. It aims to analyze the Pentecostal religious phenomenon in its relationship with the peripheral space of the city, providing a focus on the creative processes of religious actors who are the founders of collective faith experiences. We go through a critical perspective of the main sociological models that interpret the Pentecostal experience in the city, as well as a counterpoint to other concepts formally elaborated by the scientific tradition, such as "periphery" and "religion", to then propose a dialectical conception between Pentecostalism and urban periphery, emphasizing different modes of identity and sociability in the movement of religious creation in these spaces of the city. Resumen La insostenibilidad constituye un tema de reflexión obligada en los momentos actuales que vive el planeta, en donde los grandes desafíos a enfrentar están marcados por el cambio climático, el crecimiento poblacional y la urbanización acelerada, cuyas secuelas van de la mano del consumo irracional de recursos, la contaminación, la desigualdad y la pobreza. En Latinoamérica, esta situación se ve reflejada en un crecimiento urbano discontinuo, periferias pobres, bajas densidades, déficit de infraestructuras y servicios, entre otros factores que han sido considerados detonantes de problemas socio ambientales y de salud de su población; hechos que exigen ser tratados mediante procesos de planeamiento más integrales, que incluyan criterios de sostenibilidad y mecanismos de medición como indicadores e índices de sostenibilidad, para que ayuden a forjar ciudades y territorios más sostenibles. La investigación tiene como objetivo contrastar la realidad latinoamericana con otras realidades ya destacadas en el tema como la europea a través del caso español, con el fin de superar la visión sectorial del análisis. Los aportes más relevantes, se conjugan en una batería de indicadores referenciales con énfasis en la dimensión física ambiental, que podrían ser útiles al momento de plantear un modelo de Unidad Barrial Sostenible (UBS) para Latinoamérica. Abstract The unsustainability is a subject of reflection forced in the current moments that the planet lives, where the great challenges to face are marked by climate change, population growth and accelerated urbanization, whose consequences go hand in hand with the irrational consumption of resources, pollution, inequality and poverty. In Latin America, this situation is reflected in discontinuous urban growth, poor peripheries, low densities, lack of infrastructure and services, among other factors that have been considered triggers of socio-environmental and health problems of its population; facts that require to be treated through more comprehensive planning processes, including sustainability criteria and measurement mechanisms such as indicators and sustainability indices, to help forge more sustainable cities and territories. The research aims to contrast the Latin American reality with other realities already highlighted in the subject, such as the European one through the Spanish case, in order to overcome the sector vision of analysis. The most relevant contributions are combined in a battery of reference indicators with emphasis on the physical environmental dimension, which could be useful when proposing a Sustainable Neighborhood Unit model (UBS) for Latin America.

This is an essay that depicts the line of a mountain ridge as an element to contemplate the abyssal condition expressed in the landscape of Belo Horizonte, the capital of Brazil’s Minas Gerais province. The landscape is understood as the mediation of abyssal lines that determine the center and the periphery, based on the dichotomies culture/nature, belonging/non-belonging. This reflection, underpinned by the interpretation of photographic images, discusses the predatory forces of mining activities, real estate speculation in the landscape, resistance movements linked to socio-environmental struggle and the urban landscape production, examining them from culturally diverse references. Lastly, an analysis is done of the line created by the mountain and portrayed in nature paintings on city walls in order to enhance the perception of its symbology.

The city of Huancayo, like other intermediate cities in Latin America, faces problems of poorly planned land-use changes and a rapid dynamic of the urban land market. The scarce and outdated information on the urban territory impedes the adequate classification of urban areas, limiting the form of its intervention. The purpose of this research was the adoption of unassisted and mixed methods for the spatial classification of urban areas, considering the speculative land value, the proportion of urbanized land, and other geospatial variables. Among the data collection media, Multi-Spectral Imagery (MSI) from the Sentinel-2 satellite, the primary road system, and a sample of direct observation points, were used. The processed data were incorporated into georeferenced maps, to which urban limits and official slopes were added. During data processing, the K-Means algorithm was used, together with other machine learning and assisted judgment methods. This paper reflects upon the everyday agency of marginalized youth in the Brazilian urban periphery in responding to the climate crisis. In the context of the global covid-19 crisis, which has exacerbated patterns of social exclusion between urban centers and peripheries, we reflect on the extent to which current theorizations of youth activism are appropriate for understanding youth agency in the periphery of Sao Paulo. We seek to 'blur the -ism' in climate activism by introducing more multi-faceted understandings of agency based on young people's everyday (inter-)actions with their environment as well as their contradicting emotions regarding their vulnerabilities and potential. Due to the shortage of green space in urban built environments, access to peri-urban parks in the suburbs has been a focus of planning practices to meet increasing resident demands for recreational visits to natural settings. However, accurate approaches to evaluating peri-urban park accessibility and monitoring underserved areas are lacking. In this study, we propose an integrated accessibility index for peri-urban parks that is calculated using an improved Huff-2SFCA (two-step floating catchment area) model that considers the tradeoffs between quality, park size, and travel time. We first propose a peri-urban park quality index and then integrate it into an accessibility assessment. Furthermore, we employ a variable catchment to ensure that the larger and high-quality parks correspond to higher travel time thresholds. To demonstrate the practicality of the integrated index, Nanjing, a rapidly urbanizing Chinese city, was selected as a case study. The results demonstrate that (1) the quality of peri-urban parks is unevenly distributed, with high-quality parks primarily being distributed in western urban suburbs and occupying a total area of approximately 5665 ha; (2) approximately 92% of communities can enjoy peri-urban park services, while high-quality parks are more accessible to residents living in urban centers; and (3) 220 residential communities are identified as underserved areas, and 142 communities are identified as potentially underserved areas due to long travel times and the poor quality or small sizes of accessible parks. The integrated accessibility index can be employed to accurately monitor (potentially) underserved areas and assist decision-makers in formulating effective policies and strategies for improving residential access to peri-urban landscapes.

Based on ethnographic research in a « peripheral subdivision » of Rio de Janeiro, this article replaces the classic interpretation of the interplay between the street and the house with a public-private dichotomy, an approach focused on the « common » – on collective practices and the « relationships » they create. Far from being the individualistic pole of society, the house appears at the centre of practices that generate autonomy and interdependence, linking houses together. On the other hand, the street is defined by a specific logic of collective appropriation marked by the proximity of one house to another, which I call « pragmatics of contiguity ». This leads to mutual aid, and even a real « mutuality of being » between people. In this sense, the relationship between the street and the house differs from the public-private divide.

This survey explores the relationships between small local organizations and socio-technical systems based on large state or private infrastructures. Its purpose is to transform water cooperatives in the expanding peripheries of the city of La Paz in Bolivia. Its objective is to determine under what conditions a cooperative can produce the common through an analysis of the social conditions of self-organization. To this end, this article develops a sociological perspective that is not limited to the analysis of the urban network or the institutional dimension of the operator, but reintroduces variables in terms of specific skills, knowledge and know-how linked to each type of organization, in order to take into account the social characteristics of the groups concerned and the degree of interpenetration between local systems, urban networks and socio-environmental inequalities.

This article discusses the implementation of a public security policy – the Community Security Bases program – in Calabar, a favela located on the Atlantic coast of the city of Salvador in Bahia state, Brazil. I explore the ways in which police officers envisage the militarisation of urban peripheries. Setting out from the question, what does policing make possible? I demonstrate that, conceiving their work as a form of redemption for the target community, the Military Police see drug trafficking as something to be overcome, not through the complete extinction of the narcotics trade, but through the ‘pacification’ of the dealers’ actions. Thus the entire police operation consists of diverse attempts to ensure its activities form the sole point of reference for the local population to imitate. As discussed here, this has consequences for the relationship between the Military Police and the residents of this urban periphery.

The present study debates on the issue of urban regeneration in contemporary cities, adopting a strategic vision which includes the use of vegetation and green infrastructure to create a network of public spaces. Especially, urban periphery lacks of public spaces, meaning a public use of urban space for outdoor activities and social networks. The extraordinary program for the Italian peripheries, addressed to all the metropolitan cities and provincial capitals in 2016, inspired to Renzo Piano idea of “re-sewing” urban fabrics, has been a good opportunity for testing new approaches to urban regeneration. The case study investigated in this study is the financed project for the city of Perugia, which provides different interventions aimed at improving (and developing new) public spaces through vegetation enhancement and a large area destined to vegetable social gardens as a strategy for urban infill. By recovering public spaces with social purpose and providing a comprehensive strategy for aesthetic improvement of the city, the case study provides a representative example, how greening the city may promote together biodiversity conservation and urban regeneration.

Objective: To evaluate and characterize the elements that generate and are generated in a socially and environmentally segregated space, based on an ecopolitical perspective, used in this study as a tool for interdisciplinary interpretation of socio-environmental problems. Methodology: Descriptive and exploratory methodology, supported by bibliographical research and on-site observation. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with residents on the outskirts of the city of Lima, Peru. To analyze the information collected, the Pressure, State, Impact and Response (PEIR) matrix was used, in order to generate organization charts for diagnosing conflicts and problems. Originality / relevance: There is a clear intersection between cultural, historical and political parameters that produce environmental changes in cities. The following article contributes to the study of social and physical segregation as a generator of environmental impacts. Results: The results show that the researched object presents a complex environmental and social dynamics. A wall was built over the last decades to divide two realities of the city. In this sense, there was socio-environmental segregation, which is a phenomenon of contemporary urbanization, with historical, cultural and political influences. Social / management contributions: Emphasize factors that are not immediate in the physical space, such as the historical interaction of society in the city and its environmental heritage. Broaches social processes involving morality, normativity, violence, life, and death. I base my argument on an ethnographic research conducted in a slum in Belo Horizonte, which is the triangulation between three primordial normative regimes--that of the "crime world", that of the state, and that of the church--that will produce what the theoretical Judith Butler calls a framework, that is, the frame that separates who is on the inside from who is on the outside from what is intelligible. San José 520 is a Classic period hamlet of single-family residences in the urban periphery of Teotihuacan, just beyond the southeast edge of the city. Three burial features were associated with one of the residences, AF2. One of the features contained the burial of a single adult, another the successive burials of eight adults and one neonate, and the third held a neonate. We analyzed 29 bone and enamel samples from the adults for bioapatite phosphate oxygen-isotope composition; we also considered isotopic data for another five bone samples analyzed in a separate project. The isotopic results suggest a pattern of birth in the Teotihuacan region and then movement in early childhood to a "relocation" region, the geographic location of which is unknown. Later, probably in adolescence, the individuals returned to live, and eventually die, in San José 520. Without knowing more about the occupation of the relocation region, it is difficult to say what concerns or beliefs underlay this unusual but long-established settlement system. The ethnography of an irregular subdivision in the urban periphery of Rio de Janeiro suggests that walls, rather than the shrinkage of public sociability, affirm the constitutive presence of the others inside private life. First, walls (and fences) indicate that someone is taking care of the place, that is, they make public one's practical commitment with the place. Then walls (and gates) give freedom and privacy to each family, revealing the individualistic and collectivist tendencies that build the "house configurations." Finally, walls (and windows) act within an "economy of eyes": according to the belief in the evil eye, people try to control their exposure to other people's eye, while keeping an eye on them. An study of collective action conceived as autonomous participation in a particular area of the urban periphery of Montevideo, Uruguay, it is intended to make visible the political action deployed in the territory, outside of institutional frameworks (partisan, state, union). Four diverse experiences in the Cerro area were studied. The objective was to understand the meaning that these groups build around their actions, their links with state agents and their strategies to build autonomy. A qualitative research was used, through in-depth interviews with the groups and participants' observations. Thematic content analysis and a phase in which the groups were convened to produce a final joint analysis were carried out. The results were analyzed in different axes. The article briefly presents those related to: the nomination of their practices and their conception as political action; horizontal and network dynamics, multiplicity and fluidity in integration; and different links with the State (from the protest as the only link to the search for synergy in actions). In the discussion, the importance of recent redefinitions of the notion of community is pointed out and clues are outlined to rethink terms such as "external agent" and "participation". The mass movement that made Bolsonaro is driven by the redemptive promise of resolving Brazil's social conflicts and ending its social differences: Bolsonarismo will create a community of equals in a Christian fatherland. It is a political phenomenon that seeks a major shift away from modern politics: instead of party mediation, a mass movement; instead of the law, male honour; instead of representation, identity; instead of pluralism, the brotherhood; instead of the Constitution, the Gospel; and, finally, in the place of communicative reason, raw violence. Its defining characteristic is aversion to difference. The article describes and analyses the contours of the movement, as well as the shock its success has produced among the elites and intelligentsia. It draws from ethnographical research in Brazil's urban peripheries to identify the forces that have driven Bolsonaro forward.
