This article analyzes the poetry of three authors whose works are among the most attractive of the last thirty years of Peruvian poetry. They have brought a rich complexity to their lyric tradition. That is the reason why their poetry has expanded the horizons of Hispanic poetry. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to investigate an area of contemporary poetry—the works of José Morales Saravia, José Antonio Mazzotti and Róger Santiváñez—that without a doubt will mark some of the future paths of poetry in Spanish. Jasper Bernes's The Work of Art in the Age of Deindustrialization explores the relationship between art and labor in the US from roughly the 1950s to the present. With examples ranging from John O'Hara to Flarf poets , The Work of Art contends that the output of neo-avant-garde writers and artists both critically responded to and inadvertently facilitated major socioeconomic transformations during the period. Specifically, Bernes elaborates how a set of terms and concepts employed by heterodox postwar artists and writers were taken up by workers in their qualitative critiques of work only to be swiftly co-opted and strategically reformatted by management theorists and corporations, resulting in post-Fordist workplace regimes that entailed the qualitative worsening of work. Looking not only backward but also forward, The Work of Art speculates on both the future of work in an era of ongoing economic stagnation and the forms of literary and artistic critique that might prove most effective as automation continues apace and surplus populations rise. ‘Why would it not think of its typographic form already from its birth!’: a genetic approach to the typography of Aaro Hellaakoski’s ‘Kesien Kesä’ The study of visual poetry often focuses solely on the iconicity of the poem, i.e. the interplay between expressive typography and the linguistic text, leaving the possibly existing genetic documents and the processes they witness with little or no attention. The article shows how genetic criticism (critique génétique) can enrich our understanding and interpretation of visual poetry by examining the manuscript, proofs and published versions of the poem ‘Kesien kesä’ (The Summer of Summers) from the typographically experimental collectionJääpeili(1928) (Ice Mirror) by the Finnish poet Aaro Hellaakoski (1893–1952). The genetic approach to the typography of ‘Kesien kesä’ reveals a multiphase process of trial and error, where Hellaakoski strives to achieve a satisfactory visual rendering for his poem. Besides trying out different typefaces and sizes, Hellaakoski is especially concerned with the use of white space on the page, especially with indentation and stanza breaks. Based on the semiotics of Charles S. Peirce, the article proposes a genetic conception of typography as a more abstract entity, albeit that the interpretation of the genesis of typography is characteristically material. This article interrogates the limits of the "playful" genre that Timothy Yu has recently defined as Asian American experimental or avant-garde poetry. Through the work of John Yau, Brian Kim Stefans, Fred Wah, and others, I demonstrate the centrality of Wittgensteinian poetics to the aesthetic innovations of contemporary Asian North American poets whose language games challenge normative assumptions about the relationship between language, literature, and identity.
