AbstractWe offer here a particularly simple and direct construction of the congruence frame of a given frame, aka its assembly, from the bounded meet semilattice of differences of frame elements. The construction enables economical proofs of two of the assembly’s known attributes, namely ultranormality and ultraparacompactness, as well as a proof that the assembly is an essential extension of the frame with the same essential closure as the frame. Recent literature focuses on the inherent challenges of food delivery work. Less is known about how these injustices impact workers and their lives more broadly, or how workers navigate them. This empirical article is based on a 12-month ethnographic theory-relevant case study and includes an innovative shadowing method focused on migrant food delivery workers in Brisbane, Australia. We found that temporary migrant workers face intersectional injustices, exacerbated by the COVID-19 crisis, both within and beyond the platform economy. Nevertheless, the workers agentically enacted their own justices to navigate their precarity, in the absence of institutional supports. This study’s theoretical contribution is the development of a model explaining the agentic and structural underpinnings of the injustices that migrant platform workers experience. Moreover, our contribution reveals that the unique attributes that migrants bring to bear on their platform work provide them with the affordances to navigate the injustices they experience. In so doing they mitigate some of the negative impacts of platform work, and indeed derive benefits that non-migrant platform workers might not. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fast mapping (FM) is a hypothetical, incidental learning process that allows rapid acquisition of new words. Using an implicit reaction time measure in a FM paradigm, Coutanche and Thompson-Schill (Coutanche, M. N., & Thompson-Schill, S. L. (2014). Fast mapping rapidly integrates information into existing memory networks. Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 143(6), 2296–2303. ) showed evidence of lexical competition within 10 min of non-words being learned as names of unknown items, consistent with same-day lexicalisation. Here, Experiment 1 was a methodological replication (N = 28/group) that found no evidence of this RT competition effect. Instead, a post-hoc analysis suggested evidence of semantic priming. Experiment 2 (N = 60/group, online study, pre-registered on OSF) tested whether semantic priming remained when making the stimulus set fully counterbalanced. No evidence for either lexical competition nor semantic priming was detected. Experiment 3 (n = 64, online study, pre-registered on OSF) tested whether referent (a)typicality boosted lexical competition (Coutanche, M. N., & Koch, G. E. (2017). Variation across individuals and items determine learning outcomes from fast mapping. Neuropsychologia, 106, 187–193. ), but again no evidence of lexical competition was observed, and Bayes Factors for the data combined across all three experiments supported the hypothesis that there is no effect of lexical competition under FM conditions. Mercury has been described as been in daily household items such as soaps, skin-lightening creams (SLC), and topical disinfectants. Mercury exposure can reportedly cause damage to the optic nerve and retina. A 30-year-old Somali woman presented with decreased vision and was found to have bilateral optic atrophy. Neuroimaging and laboratory work-up for nutritional deficiencies, heavy metals, and syphilis were performed. Evaluation revealed normal neuroimaging and laboratory work-up except for elevated serum and urine mercury levels. Mercury levels at the initial blood test was 11.1 ug/L (normal limits < 10.0 ug/L) and was 15.7 ug/L on repeat testing. A 24-h urine test showed elevated mercury at 16 ug/24 h (normal limits < 2 ug/24 h). Evaluation of an unlabelled SLC that she was using showed the presence of mercury. It is worth testing for heavy metals in the work-up of bilateral optic atrophy. Clinicians should consider cosmetic products as a potential source of mercury exposure and recommend discontinuation if mercury is present. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Efforts to conceptualize risk factors for postoperative delirium in older adults have focused on the time proximate to the episode, but how early-life exposures influence delirium risk is poorly understood. An observational cohort of 547 patients aged 70+undergoing major non-cardiac surgery at two academic medical centers in Boston. Demographic characteristics, cognition, parental education, health, and participation in cognitively stimulating activities were assessed prior to surgery. Delirium incidence and severity were measured daily during hospitalization. Higher paternal education was associated with significantly lower incidence of delirium (X2(1, N =547)=8.35, p <.001; odds ratio OR=.93, 95% CI,.87 to.98) and inversely associated with delirium severity (r(545)=−.13, p <.001). Higher maternal education was associated with lower delirium incidence but did not reach statistical significance. The effect of paternal education on delirium incidence was independent of the patient's education, estimated premorbid intelligence, medical comorbidities, neighborhood disadvantage, and participation in cognitively stimulating activities (X2(2, N =547)=31.22, p <.001). Examining early-life exposures may yield unique insights into the risks and pathogenesis of delirium. Evaluating long-term factors that increase vulnerability to delirium may improve our ability to calculate risk. Abstract In a supersaturated design, the number of factors is greater than the number of observations. A design that is not supersaturated but has more parameters to be estimated than observations results in a supersaturated model (SSM). An SSM may occur when two-factor interactions exist in addition to main effects. The goal is to find the few active effects from the many in the SSM. Several approaches may be used to find a set of potential models and then to select the best model using some criterion. This may be done in a single stage by considering all main effects and two-factor interactions simultaneously, or by screening main effects first, then identifying the active interactions. In this paper, we study a single-stage and multiple two-stage approaches as well as different algorithms and criteria for selecting the models. For the Plackett-Burman design we study, we find that the SCAD algorithm with the corrected Akaike Information criterion (cAIC) generally performs well, but the best procedure depends on the true, unknown, underlying model. A popular approach for estimating location and dispersion effects in replicated designs under the common assumption of normal and independent errors is to use two linked generalized linear models (glms). This approach uses an asymptotic estimate for the variance of dispersion effect estimates and is very sensitive to the normality assumption. It is also possible to identify dispersion effects (after a logarithmic transformation) by using methods developed for identifying location effects in unreplicated designs. One such method is rather robust to the normality assumption but lacks power relative to the glm approach. A debate is emerging about the evolving functions and roles of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). New functions pivot on value-adding to the social, environmental and economic sustainability of communities – or in tourism parlance – destinations. This paper extends knowledge with a case study of an Italian-based EU project, in which a local university took a prominent role in developing a city and its countryside into a sustainable gastronomy and food tourism destination, working with a variety of stakeholders. Synthesising the collaborative destination alliance and university 'third mission' co-creation for sustainability frameworks, the study extended across various collaborative activities, including two years beyond the life of the project. Results show the university performed numerous roles enacting the co-creation for the sustainability approach, and that these roles evolved through a communicative and outcomes-based cyclical process. Theoretically, this case study serves as a functional platform explaining the new ways in which tourism academic sector performance is reviewed and evaluated. Assessment trace data, such as mouse positions and their timing, offer interesting and provocative reflections of individual differences yet are currently underutilized by testing professionals. In this article, we present a 10-step procedure to maximize the probability that a trace data modeling project will be successful: 1) grounding the project in psychometric theory, 2) building technical infrastructure to collect trace data, 3) designing a useful developmental validation study, 4) using a holdout validation approach with collected data, 5) using exploratory analysis to conduct meaningful feature engineering, 6) identifying useful machine learning algorithms to predict a thoughtfully chosen criterion, 7) engineering a machine learning model with meaningful internal cross-validation and hyperparameter selection, 8) conducting model diagnostics to assess if the resulting model is overfitted, underfitted, or within acceptable tolerance, and 9) testing the success of the final model in meeting conceptual, technical, and psychometric goals. If deemed successful, trace data model predictions could then be engineered into decision-making systems. We present this framework within the broader view of psychometrics, exploring the challenges of developing psychometrically valid models using such complex data with much weaker trait signals than assessment developers have typically attempted to model. The possibility of transcendent, objective, perdurant truth seems to have fallen on hard times lately, the very concept increasingly being called into question – if not simply dismissed outright. Indeed, some authors argue that we have entered a "post-truth world, where 'alternative facts' replace actual facts and feelings have more weight than evidence." Unfortunately, transcendence itself is seldom seriously or directly addressed in contemporary psychology, despite the fact that transcendence as a construct, or, perhaps better, as an ontological presupposition, is at the heart of every account, approach, model, or explanation in psychology. This paper introduces one explicit analytical project aimed at examining transcendence itself and its role in theory and philosophy in psychology. The paper will (1) briefly address the definitional task; that is, specifying what might be meant by transcendence as it is most often understood within the scholarly literature, particularly in contrast to immanence, (2) analyze some attempts to reduce transcendence to immanence and suggest that all such are unsuccessful, and (3) present a schematic framework for locating various theories and explanatory approaches in psychology within a conceptual "topology" that runs between weak and strong transcendence on one axis, and weak and strong evaluation on the other. Promoting optimal health outcomes for diverse patients and populations requires the acknowledgement and strengthening of interdependent relationships between health professions education programs, health systems, and the communities they serve. Educational programs must recognize their role as integral components of a larger system. Educators must strive to break down silos and synergize efforts to foster a health care workforce positioned for collaborative, equitable, community-oriented practice. Sharing interprofessional and interinstitutional strategies can foster wide propagation of educational innovation while accommodating local contexts. This paper outlines how member schools of the American Medical Association Accelerating Change in Medical Education Consortium leveraged interdependence to accomplish transformative innovations catalyzed by systems thinking and a community of innovation. Purpose: Empirical evidence suggests that climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices will promote resilience against climate change. We explored location-specific CSA practices and strategies for adoption in two communities (Zango and Kofa) in the North-Western Nigerian drylands. Design/methodology/approach: Mixed methods design was employed with thirty smallholders per community selected from a baseline study of 220 smallholders from the two study communities. Smallholders were engaged in a farmer participatory learning and action (PLA) on CSA adoption for resilience. Impacts of PLA were evaluated six months post-implementation and barriers for adoption explored. Findings: Pre- and post-PLA training indicated a change in confidence to adopt some CSA practices. Both communities showed greater confidence (p <.05) related to solving climate-related problems and the use of fertiliser. Communities differed in relation to other factors: Kofa exhibited improved confidence (71.4%) in solving water challenges while Zango showed greater confidence (76%) in relation to solving environmental problems. We found gender-responsive CSA promote women participation in farming. Practical implications: A deep understanding of the underlying reasoning behind non-adoption of CSA practices could support future climate resilience policies, and the lead-farmer extension model could reduce extension agent-farmer ratio. Theoretical implications: Identification of climate-smart agriculture practices and their adoption confirms the benefit of participatory learning for transformation, in this case, empowerment of smallholders, including women, to adapt to climate change in a wider sub-Saharan Africa context. Evidence shows that those with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are at higher risk for serious illness and mortality from COVID-19. In Kenya, about 50% of the COVID-19 patients who have died had an NCD. We sought to describe the challenges faced in accessing NCD medicines in Kenya during the pandemic, through a descriptive narrative informed by key stakeholders engaged in NCD service delivery and decision-making. Access to NCD medicines was affected at three levels, service delivery, health facility information systems and the medicines supply chain to health facilities. In response to these gaps, the Ministry of Health released clear directives and interim guidelines for continuity of NCD service delivery. However, implementation of guidelines was not apparent from conversations with county officials or from assessment of county services by the Ministry. Rather, heterogeneity was observed in counties' responsiveness to patient needs, where 5 out of 13 counties used mHealth technologies, while 5 had no established system to reach patients. COVID-19 amplified gaps that already existed in the system—particularly around lack of robust supply chains and sub-optimal health information systems. This descriptive paper will be useful to policy makers to provide a summary of the key challenges faced in accessing NCD medicines, identify gaps in medicines delivery, and make case for establishment of a more equitable health system to meet the needs of lower-income NCD patients. TAF4b is a gonadal-enriched subunit of the TFIID complex that is required for mouse fertility. TAF4b-deficient male mice undergo a complex series of developmental defects that result in the inability to maintain long-term spermatogenesis. To decipher the transcriptional mechanisms upon which TAF4b functions in spermatogenesis, we used two-hybrid screening to identify a novel TAF4b-interacting transcriptional cofactor, ZFP628. Deletion analysis of both proteins reveals discrete and novel domains of ZFP628 and TAF4b protein that function to bridge their direct interaction in vitro. Moreover, co-immunoprecipitation of ZFP628 and TAF4b proteins in testis-derived protein extracts supports their endogenous association. Using CRISPR-Cas9, we disrupted the expression of ZFP628 in the mouse and uncovered a post-meiotic germ cell arrest at the round spermatid stage in the seminiferous tubules of the testis in ZFP628-deficient mice that results in male infertility. Coincident with round spermatid arrest, we find reduced mRNA expression of transition protein (Tnp1 and Tnp2) and protamine (Prm1 and Prm2) genes, which are critical for the specialized maturation of haploid male germ cells called spermiogenesis. These data delineate a novel association of two transcription factors, TAF4b and ZFP628, and identify ZFP628 as a novel transcriptional regulator of stage-specific spermiogenesis. Physico-chemical characteristics of waste, particularly fine fraction (FF), from an old crystal glass waste dump in Sweden were studied to assess recycling or disposal alternatives. Hand-sorting of the waste indicated glass content of 44.1% while sieving established the FF as a more soil-like mix of glass and other materials constituting 33.3% of all excavated waste. The FF was around neutral pH with 24.4% moisture content, low values of Total Dissolved Solids, Dissolved Organic Carbon and fluorides, but hazardous concentrations of As, Cd, Pb and Zn according to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency guidelines. While the FF leached metals in low concentrations at neutral pH, it leached considerably during digestion with nitric acid, implying leaching risks at low pH. Thus, the waste requires safe storage in hazardous waste class 'bank account' storage cells to avoid environmental contamination as metal recovery and other recycling strategies for the glass waste are being developed. The study could fill the information gap regarding preservation of potential resources in the on-going, fast-paced excavation and re-landfilling of heavy metal contaminated materials in the region. The antiquated and undemocratic rules operating in the United Nations Security Council do not reflect and serve today's integrated global society, nor does the institution adequately represent the diversity of member states. Despite General Assembly discussions that have lasted a quarter-century, no result has materialized on the expansion issue. The author concludes that regional rivalries, the veto, the onerous Charter amendment process, and the failure to devise a truly representative model are responsible for the lack of progress. A model with eighteen rotating seats, based on population, area, and regional position, and four elected seats deserves consideration as an alternative. The frame Sc(L) generated by closed sublocales of a locale L is known to be a natural Boolean ("discrete") extension of a subfit L; also it is known to be its maximal essential extension. In this paper we first show that it is an essential extension of any L and that the maximal essential extensions of L and Sc(L) are isomorphic. The construction Sc is not functorial; this leads to the question of individual liftings of homomorphisms L → M to homomorphisms Sc(L) → Sc(M). This is trivial for Boolean L and easy for a wide class of spatial L, M. Then, we show that one can lift all h : L → 2 for weakly Hausdorff L (and hence the spectra of L and Sc(L) are naturally isomorphic), and finally present liftings of h : L → M for regular L and arbitrary Boolean M. We propose and study exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) control charts for monitoring high-yield processes. The EWMA control charts are developed based on non-transformed geometric, binomial and Bernoulli counts. The proposed charts are evaluated based on the average number of items sampled before the first out-of-control signal is detected. By selecting small smoothing constants, the proposed EWMA control charts outperform in numerous cases the recently developed CUSUM control charts [Chang, T.C. and Gan, F.F., Cumulative sum charts for high yield processes. Statist. Sin., 2001, 11, 791-805], which are considered the most efficient control charting mechanisms in the existing literature for monitoring fraction non-conforming as small as 0.0001. We thank all the commentators for their thoughts on our review of Fast Mapping (FM) in adults, where we questioned the evidence that FM is a distinct learning mechanism, and urged caution over the excitement generated by the original report of FM in adults with amnesia using the fast mapping paradigm (FMP). While some commentators remain convinced that there is good evidence to support a FM process in adults, most reported a skepticism similar to ours. Conventional memory theory proposes that the hippocampus is initially responsible for encoding new information, before this responsibility is gradually transferred to the neocortex. Therefore, a report in 2011 by Sharon et al. of hippocampal-independent learning in humans was notable. These authors reported normal learning of new object-name associations under a Fast Mapping (FM) procedure in adults with hippocampal damage, who were amnesic according to more conventional explicit memorisation procedures. FM is an incidental learning paradigm, inspired by vocabulary acquisition in children, which is hypothesised to allow rapid, cortical-based memory formation. In the years since the original report, there has been, understandably, a growing interest in adult FM, not only because of its theoretical importance, but also because of its potential to help rehabilitate individuals with memory problems. We review the FM literature in individuals with amnesia and in healthy adults, using both explicit and implicit memory measures. Contrary to other recent reviews, we conclude that the evidence for FM in adults is weak, and restraint is needed before assuming the phenomenon exists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In an emergency department (ED) sample, we investigated the concordance between identification of suicide-related visits through standardized comprehensive chart review versus a subset of 3 specific chart elements: ICD-9-CM codes, free-text presenting complaints, and free-text physician discharge diagnoses. The method for this study was review of medical records for adults (≥18 years) at 8 EDs across the United States. A total of 3,776 charts were reviewed. A combination of the 3 chart elements (ICD-9-CM, presenting complaints, and discharge diagnoses) provided the most robust data with 85% sensitivity, 96% specificity, 92% PPV, and 92% NPV. These findings highlight the use of key discrete fields in the medical record that can be extracted to facilitate identification of whether an ED visit was suicide-related. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this article was to conduct a treatment development study to examine the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of treating depressed, overweight/obese adolescents using both an exercise regimen and a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) protocol modified to address aspects of healthy living and nutrition (CBT plus healthy lifestyle; CBT-HL). A randomized controlled repeated measures design was used to test the hypothesis that CBT-HL would lead to greater reductions in depressed mood and weight compared to CBT for Depression Only (CBT). Participants (n=33; 24 in CBT-HL condition) included 33 adolescents (median age 15, 73% female, 61% white, 36% Hispanic) who met DSM-IV criteria for Current Major Depressive Episode (MDE) and had BMI ≥ 85th percentile. CBT-HL was found to be feasible to implement with most adolescents. Both conditions resulted in improvement in depressed mood. The CBT-HL protocol wasmore effective in stabilizing weight status as assessed by BMI. Percent time spent in MVPAwas increased at 12 weeks for adolescents in CBT-HL compared to those in CBT. The CBT-HL protocol was acceptable to most, but not all, adolescents, and resulted in an improvement in depressed mood as well as stabilization of weight status. A larger study to test efficacy and moderators of treatment outcome is necessary to better understand which adolescents would benefit most from the increased demands of exercise and adhering to nutrition recommendations in addition to standard CBT for depression. Food consumption is an inevitable experience within a travel destination and has become an area of interest for both host countries and tourists. However, research regarding traditional food consumption behaviour has not always addressed consumer choice behaviour of traditional food consumption in relation to destination. This study uses the Theory of Planned Behaviour as the basis for the study of how personality traits (food neophobia and sensation-seeking) affect traditional food consumption behaviour. Findings indicated that the theory provided feasible explanations for traditional food consumption behaviour of tourists. This study also found food neophobia has an important moderating effect on the relationship between attitude-purchase intention and subjective norm-purchase intention. Puerto Rican adolescents, as well as other Latinos/as, have been identified at higher risk for suicidal ideation and attempts compared to other ethnic groups. However, research designed to better understand suicidality among Puerto Rican adolescents is rare. Objective: A socio-cognitive vulnerability model of suicidal ideation was tested in adolescents living in Puerto Rico. Method: Multiple group path analyses were performed to assess the effect of self-reported socio-environmental and vulnerability factors on suicidal ideation, by sex, in 233 students from the metropolitan area of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Results: Overall, the model explained a large amount of the variance in suicidal ideation (r2 = .59 for females and r2 = .48 for males). Depressive symptoms had the strongest total effect on suicidal ideation for both sexes (r = .69 for females and r = .53 for males) and negative life events were the most salient socio-environmental factor. Hopelessness had a direct effect on suicidal ideation for males only. Externalizing behaviors had a direct effect on suicidal ideation for both males and females, but it was particularly strong for females. Conclusion: Results support the mediating role of vulnerability factors and the differential importance of socio-environmental and vulnerability factors in understanding suicidal ideation among Puerto Rican adolescents. Oral inhalation is the recommended delivery method of medications for the treatment of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, patients may struggle when using the various available inhaler platforms, and, as a result, may fail to achieve the benefit of the prescribed medication. Propellant-based, pressurized metered-dose inhaler and powder-based, dry powder inhaler devices are currently the most commonly prescribed delivery systems. Each of these devices has its own advantages and challenges. The Respimat® Soft Mist™ inhaler (SMI) (Boehringer Ingelheim) is a delivery system that incorporates features intended to improve orally inhaled drug delivery to these patients. These features include simple device actuation, patient inspiratory effort-independent aerosol generation, and a slower spray emission with a longer spray duration, helping to mitigate issues with precise aerosol release and breath coordination. We review the clinical trials assessing lung deposition, efficacy, and safety, and patient satisfaction for the Respimat® SMI. These data indicate that the Respimat® SMI is a device capable of delivering a consistent, clinically effective dose of medication that patients can use and prefer, which may provide significant clinical benefits for patients with COPD. The article discusses the development of a selling mix designed to reach customers. As industrial firms increasingly experiment with and adopt new selling techniques such as national account management and telemarketing, they must find ways to integrate the new selling techniques with those already in use by the firm. The use of several personal selling techniques in a concerted effort to reach customers requires the development of a selling mix, which is an integrated, consistent combination of personal selling techniques, including face-to-face selling, telemarketing, national account management. National account management is a team approach to selling, usually combining sales and service or technical representation, used to provide high levels of customer service to large customers with complex service needs. Typically, national account teams are composed of a national account manager responsible for coordinating communication and service between the account and other members of the selling firm, including applications engineers and technicians required to provide necessary customer service. Managers seeking to install a new selling mix will find little published information on how to introduce several new selling methods simultaneously into an organization, although several authors have shown the effects of introducing a single new selling method into the organization.

Palmitate attenuates insulin secretion and reduces the viability of insulinproducing cells. Previous studies identified the aberrant palmitoylation or mispalmitoylation of proteins as one mechanism by which palmitate causes β-cell damage. In this report, we identify a role for lysosomal protein degradation as a mechanism by which β cells defend themselves against excess palmitate. The cation-independent mannose 6-phosphate receptor (CI-MPR) is responsible for the trafficking of mannose 6-phosphate-tagged proteins to lysosomes via Golgi sorting and from extracellular locations through endocytosis. RINm5F cells, which are highly sensitive to palmitate, lack CI-MPR. The reconstitution of CI-MPR expression attenuates the induction of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and the toxic effects of palmitate on RINm5F cell viability. INS832/13 cells express CI-MPR and are resistant to the palmitate-mediated loss of cell viability. The reduction of CI-MPR expression increases the sensitivity of INS832/13 cells to the toxic effects of palmitate treatment. The inhibition of lysosomal acid hydrolase activity by weak base treatment of islets under glucolipotoxic conditions causes islet degeneration that is prevented by the inhibition of protein palmitoylation. These findings indicate that defects in lysosomal function lead to the enhanced sensitivity of insulin-producing cells to palmitate and support a role for normal lysosomal function in the protection of β cells from excess palmitate. Background/Study Context: Conceptual frameworks are analytic models at a high level of abstraction. Their operationalization can inform randomized trial design and sample size considerations. Methods: The Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (ACTIVE) conceptual framework was empirically tested using structural equation modeling (N=2,802). ACTIVE was guided by a conceptual framework for cognitive training in which proximal cognitive abilities (memory, inductive reasoning, speed of processing) mediate treatment-related improvement in primary outcomes (everyday problem-solving, difficulty with activities of daily living, everyday speed, driving difficulty), which in turn lead to improved secondary outcomes (health-related quality of life, health service utilization, mobility). Measurement models for each proximal, primary, and secondary outcome were developed and tested using baseline data. Each construct was then combined in one model to evaluate fit (RMSEA, CFI, normalized residuals of each indicator). To expand the conceptual model and potentially inform future trials, evidence of modification of structural model parameters was evaluated by age, years of education, sex, race, and self-rated health status. Results: Preconceived measurement models for memory, reasoning, speed of processing, everyday problem-solving, instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) difficulty, everyday speed, driving difficulty, and health-related quality of life each fit well to the data (all RMSEA < .05; all CFI > .95). Fit of the full model was excellent (RMSEA = .038; CFI = .924). In contrast with previous findings from ACTIVE regarding who benefits from training, interaction testing revealed associations between proximal abilities and primary outcomes are stronger on average by nonwhite race, worse health, older age, and less education (p < .005). Conclusions: Empirical data confirm the hypothesized ACTIVE conceptual model. Findings suggest that the types of people who show intervention effects on cognitive performance potentially may be different from those with the greatest chance of transfer to realworld activities. Puerto Rican adolescents, as well as other Latinos/as, have been identified at higher risk for suicidal ideation and attempts compared to other ethnic groups. However, research designed to better understand suicidality among Puerto Rican adolescents is rare.Objective: A socio-cognitive vulnerability model of suicidal ideation was tested in adolescents living in Puerto Rico.Method: Multiple group path analyses were performed to assess the effect of self-reported socio-environmental and vulnerability factors on suicidal ideation, by sex, in 233 students from the metropolitan area of San Juan, Puerto Rico.Results: Overall, the model explained a large amount of the variance in suicidal ideation (r2 = .59 for females and r2 = .48 for males). Depressive symptoms had the strongest total effect on suicidal ideation for both sexes (r = .69 for females and r = .53 for males) and negative life events were the most salient socio-environmental factor. Hopelessness had a direct effect on suicidal ideation for males only. Externalizing behaviors had a direct effect on suicidal ideation for both males and females, but it was particularly strong for females.Conclusion: Results support the mediating role of vulnerability factors and the differential importance of socio-environmental and vulnerability factors in understanding suicidal ideation among Puerto Rican adolescents. Successful language acquisition hinges on organizing individual words into grammatical categories and learning the relationships between them, but the method by which children accomplish this task has been debated in the literature. One proposal is that learners use the shared distributional contexts in which words appear as a cue to their underlying category structure. Indeed, recent research using artificial languages has demonstrated that learners can acquire grammatical categories from this type of distributional information. However, artificial languages are typically composed of a small number of equally frequent words, while words in natural languages vary widely in frequency, complicating the distributional information needed to determine categorization. In a series of three experiments we demonstrate that distributional learning is preserved in an artificial language composed of words that vary in frequency as they do in natural language, along a Zipfian distribution. Rather than depending on the absolute frequency of words and their contexts, the conditional probabilities that words will occur in certain contexts (given their base frequency) is a better basis for assigning words to categories; and this appears to be the type of statistic that human learners utilize. There is a need for validated measures of attention for use in longitudinal studies of older populations. We studied 249 participants aged 80 to 101 years using the population-based MOBILIZE Boston Study. Four subscales of the Test of Everyday Attention (TEA) were included, measuring attention switching, selective, sustained and divided attention and a neuropsychological battery including validated measures of multiple cognitive domains measuring attention, executive function and memory. The TEA previously has not been validated in persons aged 80 and older. Among participants who completed the TEA, scores on other attentional measures strongly with TEA domains (R=.60-.70). Proportions of participants with incomplete TEA subscales ranged from 8% (selective attention) to 19% (attentional switching). Reasons for not completing TEA tests included failure to comprehend test instructions despite repetition and practice. Objectives:Boxing is a sport where athletes compete in several weight categories. Professional boxers typically dehydrate to cut their weight for the weigh-in (24 h before the contest) and then rehydrate before the fight. The International Boxing Federation (IBF) mandates a second weigh-in 12 h before the fight. Our objectives were: 1) To quantify the weight gain (WG) from the 1st to the 2nd weigh-in; 2) to investigate whether rapid WG affects boxing performance (win/loss rate) and 3) whether weight discrepancy (WD) 15 between boxers exposes them to increased health risks (rate of fights ended before time limit). Methods:From official weigh-in reports of 71 IBF fights (142 fighters) the following data were gathered/calculated for each boxer: age, weight division, 1st weight, 2nd weight, WG between weigh-ins (kg and %), WD between opponents, and fight decision. Results:Between the weigh-ins, the average WG was 2.52 ± 1.37 kg (range −0.3/6.4 kg) and 3.8 ± 2.2% of the initial body weight (range −0.4/9.3%) and the average WD 1.94 ± 1.50 kg (maximum 7.10 kg). Both WG and WD did not affect match outcomes. We observed tendencies for higher loss rate among boxers gaining more weight, and for higher victory rate in boxers with larger WD, however without reaching significance. A significant negative correlation was found between the 1st weight and the WG, both in absolute (r = −0.278, p = 0.001) and relative value (r = −0.497, p < 0.0001). Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the relationship of serum Mg with stage of diabetes measured by fasting serum glucose in a cohort of 485 African American and Hispanic adults.Methods: The cross sectional Rosetta study was designed to assess body composition in a multi-racial cohort of healthy adults living in New York City. The data utilized for the current analyses were collected during the years 1990 to 2000. Serum Mg and glucose were measured after a 10-12 hour fast. Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry was used to measure fat mass (FM) and fat free mass (FFM).Results: The mean age of the cohort was 53 +/- 16 years. Hispanics had significantly lower (p < 0.05) mean serum Mg levels (0.82 +/- 0.07 mmol/L vs. 0.85 +/- 0.07 mmol/L) and FFM (48.8 +/- 10.9 kg vs. 50.9 +/- 10.3 kg) compared to African Americans. In both race/ethnic groups, individuals classified as having diabetes had significantly (p < 0.001) lower serum concentrations of Mg (0.80 +/- 0.07 mmol/L) compared to the normal group (0.84 +/- 0.07 mmol/L).Conclusions: These results show that in African American and Hispanic adults, those with diabetes have lower serum Mg levels compared to those classified as pre-diabetic or those with normal fasting glucose levels. We address what might be termed the reverse reflection problem: given a monoreflection from a category A onto a subcategory B, when is a given objectB∈ B the reflection of a proper subobject? We start with a well known specific instance of this problem, namely the fact that a compact metric space is never the Čech-Stone compactification of a proper subspace. We show that this holds also in the pointfree setting, i.e., that a compact metrizable locale is never the Čech-Stone compactification of a proper sublocale. This is a stronger result than the classical one, but not because of an increase in scope; after all, assuming weak choice prin­ciples, every compact regular locale is the topology of a compact Hausdorff space. The increased strength derives from the conclusion, for in general a space has many more sublocales than subspaces. We then extend the analysis from metric locales to the broader class of perfectly normal locales, i.e., those whose frame of open sets consists entirely of cozero elements. We include a second proof of these results which is purely algebraic in character. At the opposite extreme from these results, we show that an extremally disconnected locale is a compactification of each of its dense sublocales. There is considerable interest in the role of sleep in weight regulation, yet few studies have examined this relationship in overweight/obese (OW/OB) adults. Using a within-subject, counterbalanced design, 12 OW/OB women were studied in lab with two nights of short (5 hr time in bed [TIB]) and two nights of long (9 hr TIB) sleep. Hunger, consumption at a buffet, and fasting hormone levels were obtained. Significant polysomnographic differences occurred between conditions in total sleep time and sleep architecture (ps < .001). Percent energy from protein at the buffet increased following short sleep. No differences were observed for total energy intake or measured hormones. Further research is needed to determine how lengthening sleep impacts weight regulation in OW/OB adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study examined the practice of language brokering (LB) among South Asian Canadian college-age adults and how such practice relates to acculturation to mainstream and heritage cultures, as well as personal empowerment. One hundred and twenty-four young adults reported on three different indices of LB (brokering frequency, diversity of people, and diversity of items translated), as well as measures of acculturation to mainstream and heritage cultures, and personal empowerment. Whereas brokering frequency and number of people one brokers for were not related to acculturation, findings suggested that the wider the range of items and topics brokered, the stronger the reported acculturation to both mainstream and heritage cultures. Further, brokering for a more diverse pool of individuals was predictive of more individual empowerment, whereas brokering frequency and diversity of items translated were not related to empowerment. Findings point at the importance of going beyond brokering frequency to examine multiple indicators of brokering as they relate to acculturation and personal empowerment. This paper examined coping and adaptation strategies employed by smallholder farmers and their efficacy in response to climate change in Zango and Kofa communities in North-Western Nigeria. Three focus group discussions with 51 participants comprising men, women, and the youth, and 15 follow-up interviews were conducted in this study to understand the influence of cultural beliefs on climate change adaptation. Results show that to adapt, farmers borrow food from neighbours to repay in good season, use early maturing crops, sell livestock and other assets, engage in other businesses. Farmers also offer prayers and sacrifices based on the belief that climate change is caused by God. Thus, offering prayer and making sacrifices were very pronounced and found to be the dominant strategies farmers adopt in both communities which could potentially lead to less adaptation action thereby indirectly exposing the vulnerable communities to additional shocks. We found that most (50% and above) of the participating farmers in both communities had no access to any formal education which could affect their adaptation decisions. We concluded that farmers' cultural beliefs and practices such as prayer influences their adaptation behaviour and therefore adaptation designs need to address cultural influences to avoid future maladaptive responses consequently exacerbating vulnerability. Portopulmonary hypertension (POPH) is a complication of portal hypertension characterized by pulmonary vasoconstriction and vascular remodeling that can lead to right heart failure and death. Differentiation of POPH from other causes of pulmonary hypertension, such as volume overload or a hyperdynamic high flow state, is critical because a diagnosis of POPH has significant implications for liver transplant risk stratification, Model for End Stage Liver Disease exception points, and the use of pulmonary arterial hypertension-(PAH) specific therapy. Currently, there are 12 approved medications for the treatment of PAH in the US, and three of these were approved in 2013. This review will discuss the diagnosis, evaluation and management of POPH and the role of recently approved PAH therapies in the treatment of POPH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article explores the food safety practices and biosecurity measures of a Chilean salmon farm. The farm participated in detailed discussions on biosecurity and farm food safety practices and, in addition to the biosecurity measures, the following all play important roles in ensuring fish health and reduction of mortalities and outbreaks: optimum stocking density, respect and coordination between different farm sites in relation to the Area Management Agreement, and quality of smolt during fish transfer. From this and other studies, it is evident that we need to look for a balance between biosecurity measures and management factors; however, we are still unable to quantify biosecurity measures. One practical and cost-effective way would be to look at past epidemiological and mortality data and the period when biosecurity measures were applied to see if there was an association between application of biosecurity measures and subsequent reduction in mortalities and infections. If yes, then this is a good sign signifying that the strict biosecurity measures are working. Similar to Good Aquaculture Practices, biosecurity measures need to be adopted as a whole package, and the reduction of one point may have significant consequences on the whole process. The present study captured a snapshot of real-time farm food safety and biosecurity practices of a Chilean salmon farm. Poor nutrition is a determinant of death particularly among persons living with HIV (PLHIV). This paper discusses the state of food and nutrition assistance to PLHIV in Ghana. A review of published articles and program reports was done and supported by in-depth interviews with key stakeholders. Data were qualitatively analyzed. A matrix highlighting problems that need to be addressed, possible attributable factors, strengths, and opportunities of existing actions metamorphosed from the analysis. Despite the continued growth in both the research and practice into criminal profiling, three major shortfalls continue to permeate the topic. The first is a lack of coherency in the field which has, as a consequence, led to increasingly discordant and contradictory theorems. In many respects this problem is connotative of the adagecomparing apples with oranges. Likewise, the adagethe elephant in the roomdescribes the second major shortfall concerning a paucity of research testing the validity (i.e., accuracy) of espoused paradigms. Finally, the adagetoo many cooks spoil the brothdescribes the third major shortfall concerning the counterproductive popular interest surrounding the topic. These shortfalls when examined collectively appear to form a self-perpetuating cycle. The use of violent crime databases such as ViCAP and ViCLAS are suggested as potential mechanisms in arresting this cycle by rectifying these factors, which continue to stymie the cogent scientific development of criminal profiling. Seven acidophilic/acidotolerant fungal strains were characterized from samples of process waters (raffinate) at one of Australia's largest uranium mines, the Ranger Mine in Northern Territory. They were isolated from raffinate, which typically were very acidic (pH 1.7-1.8) and contained high concentrations of total dissolved/colloidal salts (> 100 g/L). Five of the isolates correspond to two new acidotolerant Ascomycota fungi. The first is a member of a new genus, here described as Fodinomyces (Teratosphaeriaceae, Capnodiales, Dothideomycetes) and does not show clear close affiliation with any other described fungus in the scientific literature. The second belongs to the genus Coniochaeta (Coniochaetaceae, Coniochaetales, Sordariomycetes) and is closely related to Coniochaeta hansenii. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Food and beverage (F&B) management education is essential to hospitality, and arguably tourism and event, management students. Higher educators are challenged in resourcing various approaches. As many students have experiences as F&B workers and/or consumers, reflective assessment leveraging these experiences may be an effective learning tool. Using student reflective journals from an Australian institution’s undergraduate F&B management cohort, this article reports the process, effectiveness, and challenges associated with reflective learning. Using Nvivo®, analysis identified three key themes: students demonstrated comprehension for a theoretical topic by effectively interpreting a past experience; they applied this greater level of theoretical comprehension to further evaluate that past experience and challenge assumptions; and they leveraged increased theoretical comprehension and the application and evaluative processes of past experiences to effect reflective thinking. Findings suggest students from Confucian heritage backgrounds require additional tutelage in attempting reflective tasks. Implications for educators are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To determine if patient-related variability for adults and children recorded during hand spraying of Flonase with an instrumented nasal spray results in significant differences in spray weight, droplet size or spray pattern. Methods: Settings derived from adult and pediatric participants hand-spraying nasal sprays were implemented into force and velocity-controlled automated actuators. Spray weight, droplet size distribution and spray pattern tests were performed using iterations of actuation force (AF) and force rise, hold and fall times. Travel, actuation velocity and release velocity settings were also investigated. Results: The variability measured in adult-derived actuator settings did not result in any differences in spray weight, but pediatric participants spraying with low AF and/or compression velocity (CV) were predicted to receive a partial dose or no dose at all under some circumstances. Droplet size characteristics were sensitive to the hand-based variability, with actuation force, force rise time and CV hand-related settings all resulting in significant differences in the droplet size. Conclusions: This study demonstrated how variability in hand spraying by adults and pediatric patients could result in differences in nasal spray characteristics, thus demonstrating the importance of monitoring how the prospective patient groups are likely to use a nasal spray.
