An essay offering an alternative and complementary approach to literary valuing is presented. The ontological and genealogical conceptions of literary value are discussed. Ideas concerning literary value by English professor Rita Felski and literary theorists Terry Eagleton, Barbara Hernstein Smith and Stanley Fish, among others, are tackled. The way readers ascribe value to the manner of Geoffrey Chaucer's poetry, thereby acting as the valuing agent, is also discussed.

The author discusses the fragments IV and V of the "Canterbury Tales" which do not exist in which he offers renewed and wider attention to the dubiousness of the fragment break by offering detailed decisive considerations of the manuscript evidence for the IV-V link and the editorial intervention that resulted in its current representation. It also shows textual analysis from the lines in the story.
